R. Perks: It is a national shame that mining companies are allowed to blast America's oldest mountains to smithereens -- all for the sake of dirty coal. Indeed, it is unfathomable that here in America, where the Adirondacks are adored and the Rockies are revered, that the Appalachian Mountains -- older than the Himalayas and so integral to our nation's heritage -- are steadily being reduced to lifeless moonscapes.

Cynthia Mary Roberson, an unemployed mother from Arizona, led her 12- and 14-year-old sons and their friends to commit at least 20 armed robberies and assaults, including the beating of a teenage boy who had nothing more than an orange lollipop, police said.

<wordzilla:extended>At the time of her arrest in late May, the 51-year-old Roberson lived with her two sons, ages 12 and 14, and five other young boys and men between 14 and 20 years old.

Phoenix police say Roberson had recently lost her job and persuaded her sons and the others living with her to commit robberies to help pay for rent and her car loan.</wordzilla:extended>

Collins: Palin Quit Because She's Not a Quitter

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www10.nytimes.com/2009/07/04/opinion/04collins.html?_r=5&ref=opinion</wordzilla:destination>

Gail Collins: Truly, Sarah Palin has come a long way. When she ran for vice president, she frequently became disjointed and garbled when she departed from her prepared remarks. Now the prepared remarks are incoherent, too. "And a problem in our country today is apathy," she said on Friday as she announced that she would resign as governor of Alaska at the end of the month. "It would be apathetic to just hunker down and go with the flow.' Nah, only dead fish go with the flow.' No. Productive, fulfilled people determine where to put their efforts, choosing to wisely utilize precious time ... to BUILD UP." Basically, the point was that Palin is quitting as governor because she's not a quitter. Or a deceased salmon.

      <wordzilla:destination>http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,530007,00.html</wordzilla:destination>

Bernard Madoff, disappointed that he might actually have to spend time im prison mingling with murderers, rapists, drug-dealers, white supremacist gangs with a hatred of Jews, and terrorists, has hired a veteran prison consultant to help him to find the best possible jail in which to serve his 150-year sentence for Wall Street's biggest fraud.

<wordzilla:extended>After his sentencing this week Madoff, now Prisoner No 1727-054, met Herb Hoelter, of the National Center for Institutions and Alternatives, whose previous clients include the jailed Sotheby's chairman Alfred Taubman and the financiers Michael Milken and Ivan Boesky.

The draconian maximum sentence imposed by the judge means that Madoff, 71, will be assigned to a tougher category of prison than most white-collar criminals.</wordzilla:extended>

A woman in Hauppage, N.Y., angry at a 9-year-old who got in an argument with her own child at elementary school, allegedly took an ad out on Craigslist soliciting the 9-year-old for sex. Margery Tannenbaum has been arraigned on charges of aggravated harassment and endangering the welfare of a minor. Her ad read "I need a little affection ... I'm blond, I'm cute and I'll be waiting" and people who emailed were told the child's name and phone number, but not her age. More than 50 people called.

In the fourth all-Williams final at Wimbledon, Serena beat her sister Venus 7-6 (3), 6-2 on Saturday for her third title and 11th Grand Slam championship. Serena beat Venus in the 2002 and '03 finals, before Venus prevailed in last year's championship match. Venus was trying to become the first woman since Steffi Graf in 1991-93 to win Wimbledon three years in a row.

Doctors can charge patients for missed appointments, CNN reported. One patient reported being charged more than $100 for missing an appointment. Some doctors even insist on a security deposit. "Not all, but more and more," medical correspondent Elizabeth Cohen said.

<wordzilla:extended>This has never happened to me but what a shitty practice! I guess I'd understand if the patient didn't have any good reason. It still seems kind of harsh, especially considering that many doctors double book anyway.

Does this mean we should be able to charge the doctor for our wasted time if we sit in a waiting room for an extended period of time?</wordzilla:extended>

Two years before the invasion of Iraq, oil executives and foreign policy advisers told the Bush administration that the United States would remain "a prisoner of its energy dilemma" as long as Saddam Hussein was in power. That April 2001 report, "Strategic Policy Challenges for the 21st Century," was prepared by the James A. Baker Institute for Public Policy and the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations at the request of then-Vice President Dick Cheney. In retrospect, it appears that the report helped focus administration thinking on why it made geopolitical sense to oust Hussein, whose country sat on the world's second largest oil reserves.

<wordzilla:extended>Despite the Bush administration's denials about oil as a motivation for war, the Bush administration's focus on Iraqi oil was firmly set.

On April 5, 2003, Reuters reported that the State Department's "Future of Iraq" project headed by Thomas Warrick, special adviser to the Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, held its fourth meeting of the oil and energy-working group.

Documents obtained by Reuters showed that "a clear consensus among expert opinion favoring production-sharing agreements to attract the major oil companies."

"That is likely to thrill oil companies harboring hopes of lucrative contracts to develop Iraqi oil reserves," the news agency reported. "Short-term rehabilitation of southern Iraqi oil fields already is under way, with oil well fires being extinguished by US contractor Kellogg Brown and Root ...

"Long-term contracts are expected to see US companies ExxonMobil, ChevronTexaco and ConocoPhillips compete with Anglo-Dutch Shell, Britain's BP, TotalFinaElf of France, Russia's LUKOIL and Chinese state companies."

After US troops captured Baghdad in April 2003, they were ordered to protect the Oil Ministry even as looters ransacked priceless antiquities from Iraq's national museums and stole explosives from unguarded military arsenals.</wordzilla:extended>

ID Implant Approved for Use in Humans

      <wordzilla:destination>http://singularityhub.com/2009/07/02/will-your-id-soon-be-a-microchip-under-your-skin/</wordzilla:destination>

Yet another sci-fi milestone is upon us: microchips implanted under your skin that identify you. The VeriChip is the first radio-frequency identification (RFID) microchip that's been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in humans. The chip is the size of a long grain of rice, and can be implanted pretty much anywhere in the body (most commonly along the tricep). Depending on how it's used, the chip could do anything from telling doctors your medical background to buying you a round at the club.

<wordzilla:extended>at the end of the article they ask for suggestions on how the chips would be useful - i've had an idea about that for quite some time. they're already putting them in some articles of clothing and various other commodities and pets - how about one small enough that a child could carry it in a locket and if said child were ever accosted/kidnapped, they could just pop it into their mouth, swallow it and the child WOULD be found within 72 hours? some are as small as a piece of rice and would pass easily once the child is found.

otherwise, if you're EVER forced to have one implanted, say no to that.</wordzilla:extended>

Joey Chestnut kept the coveted Mustard Belt in the United States Saturday, eating a world-record 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes at the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island, New York. Rival Takeru Kobayashi came in second with 64 1/2. This is Chestnut's third straight win. "July 4 isn't a holiday for these men," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg. "It's going to be a day of reckoning."
