Decried by the notorious House Special Committee on Un-American Activities as "the largest of the Communist 'front' movements in the United States," The American League for Peace and Democracy was in fact founded and supported by a notably diverse group of individuals, including members of the Women's Peace Society, religious leaders, the War Resisters League, many labor unions, several well-known pacifists, officers of the NAACP and indeed members of the Communist Party.

Originally founded as American League Against War and Fascism in the fall of 1933, its purpose was primarily to combat the rise of Hitlerism in Europe by means other than war.

The League disbanded in late 1939.

Presiding over an American economy battered by inflation and a rise in the cost of living, President Ford asked Americans to "Whip Inflation Now" ("WIN") - calling on individuals to do their part with responsible saving and spending. He encouraged people to wear "WIN" buttons to show their support for the initiative. (Not surprisingly, though proposed assuredly with the best of intentions, the effort was largely met with cynical derision and knocked as a publicity gimmick.)

Brown campaigned for the presidency in 1980 on a promise to "protect the Earth, serve the people, and explore the universe." Specifically, he opposed nuclear power, supported the Balanced Budget Amendment, and wanted to increase funding for the space program. Brown's campaign fizzled after a poor showing in the important New Hampshire primary. He would run again in 1992, surprising many with victories in several primaries, but ultimately losing the Democratic nomination to Arkansas governor Bill Clinton.

Brown was later elected Mayor of the California city Oakland, and in 2004 was elected Attorney General of the state of California, a position he still holds.

Perot opposed US involvement in the first Gulf War and subsequently began his own run for the presidency. Though as a Washington outsider-3rd party candidate his chances seemed slim, Perot made great strides with his United We Stand America grass-roots campaign organization. At one point, polls had Perot in the lead with almost 40 percent of the vote. He would go on to win 19% of the popular vote, the best showing of a 3rd party candidate since 1912.

Prior to and during World War II, the Revolutionary War icon "The Minuteman" was resurrected as part of campaign to convince Americans to buy war bonds. Willkie supported the effort and encouraged his supporters to participate. The familiar Uncle Sam Hat was also used often on posters and other materials promoting the bond drive.
