Mixtape VIII: Transatlantic Yearning

A mixtape is a long celebrated tradition between music fans which is used to reflect many things about the compiler tastes & feelings. This can also range from a casually selected list of favorite songs, to a conceptual mix of songs linked by a theme or mood. Since the last time i have posted i have developed (dare i say) a crush on an very special, talented individual who lives on the other side of the world from where i am placed.

The question remains: can someone you have never met, yet occasionally speak to online generate some vague but strong emotions inside of someone? There is no denying that we now live in a mediated culture where we are bombarded & equally surrounded by images nearly every second of our live, especially living with the youtube (which is where i first came in contact with this magnificent person).

Regardless of a shared interest in horror cinema, it could be seen strangely as resembling a fan having a crush on an actress or singer. As stated here before i have a tendency to over-think every little thing-which most likely has developed from writing/directing films (which she has similar skills). It's almost like dare i say it (cliched and all) the perfect person you could only ever dream about.

On the contrary realistically my track record with woman is as foul as rotten meat. Not being pessimistic its true. One can't account for email exchanges & hardcore flattery on my part to expect anything to end positively with this, Yet who's knows as Jimi once said. This post is to likely come off as creepy as i have another tendency to scare women with words, so i guess this mix-tape is a document of yearning or carving for someone, who you are most likely never going to be able to see or wake up next to one morning and just to stare at their natural beauty. Just reading back through this makes me sounds totally nuts so I'll leave it here!

Balam Acab - Fragile Hope

If you digged SBTRKT's debut album you should dig this wonderful, relaxing album. Continuing the current trend of blurring RNB/Dubstep, Wander/Wonder is a stunning debut album which gets better with every listen. Tonight's track start's out in a similar fashion to Nicolas Jarr's work on: Space is Only Noise (LP) before processing into a groove which would make Four Tet even wanna get on down.

On a final note: I love the Burial-esque vocals on this, simply beautiful.

Dum Dum Girls - Coming Down

This simply is one of the best ballads i've heard in a long time. Dum Dum Girls new album entitled: Only in Dreams goes on general sale this coming Monday. Two word's i'm waiting with bated breath. This Californian all woman outfit are seriously packing a punch if you are fans of: music that transcends genre. For example on the track Always Looking, it sounds like a classic 1950's rock n roll (with the surf guitar sound effects) but with added distortion and more aggressive drumming. This is pop with added power!

Yet the song the which is most doing it for me is Coming Down. A stunning tour-de-force musically and emotionally. The lead vocalist has an uncanny resemblance to Wendy Melvoin (one half of Wendy & Lisa), regardless lead singer Dee Dee has a stunning range & her performance could leave you an emotional wreck (but in a good way).

Teeth: Flowers

As the world continues to create anxiety via the news stating that: A satellite will come crashing down to an unknown destination at some point today. Whether or not this event will happen or be like the countless other hoax stories like: a particular day the world comes to end, i rebel with bursting the noisy, low-fi sounds of electronic punk trio Teeth.

Residing in Dalston the group has a sound that will be bound to be bursting through international speakers in the not to distant future. Flowers weaves through an electronic soundscape, boasting a truly funky beat which then caresses you with Veronica So's seductive voice. Hopefully it will send that satellite back to space as the noise is too much for it to handle.

Miracle Fortress - Miscalculations

Graham Van Pelt, a producer & musician respectively unleashed his second album earlier this year entitled: Was I The Wave? I have yet to listen to the full album but from researching in Rough Trade, this will be shortly making it's way into my collection. After hearing the opening notes & atmosphere of Awe-i knew i was bound to dig this guy's work.

Today i feel like i need a groove & the track Miscalculations offers that perfectly. I'm a lover of dream pop, shoegaze, electronica & awesome guitar playing so this ranks very highly for me as: one of the bigger pop songs I've heard all year. As you know i'm a huge supporter of Memory Tapes and this song i guess to my ears has a similar feel to some of his work. On the other hand, the sun is shining on this September morning here in London. I guess this is the reason i have chosen this jam because of it's colorful & beautiful personality.

Big Deal - Distant Neighbourhood

This time last week i had the pleasure of watching this two person outfit rock out live in Rough Trade East. Alice Costelloe & Kacey Underwood have produced the right combination of teen angst & the transition into adulthood I've heard in a long time. The unique selling point for me is: Big Deal's songs essential comprise of just two guitars and shared vocals, which intertwine harmoniously. Their debut album is a tour de force in broken-hearted melancholy, but the vocals juxtapose possible depressing material into intimate, deviant moments of ecstasy. Stand out jam's like: Chair, Homework, Talk & Seraphine will secure this lovely duet a big following for years to come.

I hope maybe i'll be able to secure some of their songs for my first feature film, plus maybe a date with Alice Costelloe (but she would be too cool to hangout with moi).

A day after playing Hop Farm, a small purple man went into a small Soho Wrecka Stow. Sounds of The Universe to be precise. Pure X - Your in it Now & Dream Over:

I'll be perfectly honest here; every-time i go to Rough Trade i end up spending ludicrous amounts of money on new artists albums. On my browsing this time round i stumbled across the hazy, distorted noise of Pure X. This collaboration from Nate Grace, Jesse Jenkins and Austin Youngblood is their first debut album & it's a promising one for what they offer. What i admire is their fixed guidelines before recording a track, these are:

To capture songs in their purest form, mistakes and all, as they were being written. Chasing a vibe in the studio allowed the songs to form themselves; structure and formula lost their rigidity as the songwriting process became more about meditative evolution than meticulous intent.

This honest, raw approach makes me admire the group all the more. Turning their back against the cliche, industry standard way of recording in flavor of loose, almost jamming sessions for me makes the songs all the more hauntingly beautiful-as they are essentially do one take and that's it.

John Maus - Cop Killer

We Must Become The Pitless Censors of Ourselves is the third album by John Maus. If synth pop is your thing then this has to be the most hauntingly, profoundly beautiful music of that genre i have heard all year. Clocking in at only 31 minutes in length the LP boasts gloriously memorable grooves, soaring choruses & multiple layers of reverberated bliss.

Today marked the second time i had listened to the album & can honestly say: With each listen the album feels more unique, interesting & better. The music makes the listener feel alive, bursting with energy & wanting to conquer the world (maybe that's a little extreme) but regardless check out this LP, your be pleasantly surprised.

Back in November 6th 2009, an unknown, unidentified signal was broadcasted on Smoke Radio weekly between 7-8pm. Only a selected number of students were part of what was codename: Psych-er-funker-delic between it's two month stench on air. Authorities finally identified that their satellites had somehow stumbled across a broadcast from a new universe called: Tha Purple Universe. The satellites amended the issue & Smoke Radio ceased the problem before it became contagious. Reverberated Bubblegum however has unearthed a file name called: Psychotropic Kaleidoscope.

This marks the eighth mix-tape in the Reverberated Bubblegum series. As with my old radio show it's a combination of: Psychedelic, Electronic, Funk, Jazz Fusion & pretty much everything else. Zephyr Sound Ft Teto Parvanov - Inside Out

Callum Thomas Brown's Zephyr Sound is a solo project residing from London (which is still burning within five minutes from my house). The musician/producer uses a variety of guest vocalists/musicians to contribute in the writing/recording process. After listening to the self-titled EP released back in June-you can truly hear the input from the guest spot's. A close friend of mine Teto Parvanov has a truly great voice and distanced for bigger & better things. After meeting randomly one evening at a film club we have some what stayed in touch ever since. Teto is a solo artist & part of two groups: Structure & As Thieves Would.

I luckily had the chance to hear first hand, the forming of his sound & steadily intimate/personal live shows. He invests all his soul into each performance whilst obtaining the power to make each audience feel as if he was performing for them & no one else. After being informed about this new track i was over the moon to hear trip hop, chilled dreamy pop injected with his heavenly voice-truly a stand out on the EP. The groove is funky from the off, settle guitar playing & an overall euphoric, sound full of serenity-I'm happy to pass on hopefully to a wider audience this magnificent jam.

LoOmis - Slow Burner & Talk Like Whales

After stumbling through my email's this weekend-i was most intrigued by one from a gentleman from San Francisco. LoOmis, not to be associated with the doctor in John Carpenter's Halloween specializes in: low-fi, hazy samples, touches of electronica and swirls of psychedelia. Evoking the sounds of Washed Out & Memory Tapes, LoOmis while manipulating samples, creating loops and adding vocals with layers of math-rock influenced guitar work still manages to create a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere. Slow Burner hit instantly hit a chord with me from the very first listen. Just like with Cults debut lp, the beats wouldn't be out of place with most classic hiphop beats. I can imagine someone like: Mos Def, 2PAC or Common emotional pouring all the souls into a beat like this.

LoOmis doesn't suffer like Washed Out music where the vocals are buried in a haze of reverberated noise, where you can no longer establish what he is saying. Patrick Bailey equally balances & never allows an instrument or vocal to overpower the other elements. He creates musical harmony whilst remaining melancholic overtones. I have commend LoOmis for creating an EP which spoke volumes, promising amazing things for the future & which doesn't wear off after initial listens.

Vellocet marks his third release of the year. Following the full length A Solitary Attraction and EP A Dog & His Boy, Vellocet was crafted during the early summer months of 2011 so i'm hopefully for more releases later in the year. If i had a beef with the EP: I wish it was more longer or conceived as a LP as it's ridiculously good.

After a long absence & a lot of personal battles/turmoil, Wednesday marks the release of my next mix-tape entitled: Serenity. Not to be confused with the movie adaptation of Firefly, this collection of fourteen jam's were selected in light of recent events such as: The death of over seventy teenagers in Norway & the sad passing of Amy Winehouse (which this episode is dedicated to both of them). I hope that this mix takes the listeners mind off of the monstrous, dystopian nature of current events on this planet of ours. Val Bennett - Take 5

Like Rock Steady reggae? Imagine the slow tempo groove mixed with some jazz fusion and you have this amazing little gem from Val Bennett. This cover of The Dave Brubeck Quartet's ironic take 5 is a totally different beast. This is one of the many songs that are acknowledged as timeless tracks by Rock Steady fans. Rock Steady itself dominated the charts from 1966-1968 with the likes of: Toots & The Maytals, Bob Marley, Keith & Tex, Desmond Dekker & The Aces pioneering a new sub-genre that capitalized on the success of the final slow jam groove at the end of parties. Before being superseded by reggae in later years, this short chapter in Jamaican music history ranks among the best at producing soulful jams that stand the test of time.

Washed Out - A Dedication

I first became a fan of Ernest Greene's work after hearing the fabulous EP: Life is Leisure. The EP was a perfect combination of dream pop/shoe gaze/"CHILLWAVE" but felt timeless, beautiful, funky & most importantly urged the listener to keep coming back for more. It was short, sweet & delicious but the new LP: Within & Without seemed (in my opinion) to replace it's ingredients/winning formula. The album starts of well with three stunning jams. Eyes Be Closed, Echoes & Amor Feti are what you had to grown to love on Life of Leisure but more refined. Sadly after the opening three tracks the grooves stop! There is no memorable melodies or choruses resulting in an entire middle half of the LP sounding repetitive, unmemorable & underwhelming. The album somewhat gets back to the heights of the beginning with Within & Without plus today's jam: A Dedication.

The problem with the middle section is that it all sounds the same! It's refreshing to hear just a piano, his voice & a nice slow crescendo into a beautifully paced slow jam. I think the main issue is: Life of Leisure was focused, had a sound/theme and ran with it. A collection of songs which would be acceptable or great on their own when put together like on this album just doesn't quite work. Anyways enjoy one of the best songs right here, right now. :)
