If you are a professional photographer or an avid hobbyist with a new SLR, you have probably found yourself at a wedding - either to take the official pictures, or as a guest. No matter the reason, you want to take the best wedding pictures possible and capture all the great moments that are likely to go unnoticed, or relegated to fading memories in conversations.

Canon has a bunch of lenses on the market specifically for shooting weddings. From classic portraits, to low lighting scenes, to settings where everyone is in motion, Canon lenses cover a wide range of scenarios, while giving you complete control.

Let’s take a look at a few of the great Canon lenses out there right now.

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras

Canon isn’t messing around with the EF 70-200mm lens. From Canon’s L-series (the L is for luxury), this lightweight and portable lens sports a rugged design, despite its weight. The Canon EF 70-200mm Lens is a culmination of years of design, set to work with today’s digital and high megapixel cameras. This lens is sharp and quick to focus, even at a distance - and the Canon EF 70-200mm keeps your subject matter sharp and in high-detailed focus no matter what the conditions.

The Canon Zoom Wide Angle Telephoto EF 24-105mm f/4L

This is a very versatile Canon lens because it is weather sealed, and can fit both full-frame and crop sensor cameras. As part of the Canon L-Series, the Canon Zoom Wide Angle Telephoto Lens can give you sharp detail and focus on you subject matter from 1.5-feet on out to incredibly long distances. The quick and smooth focusing makes this the perfect lens for wedding portraits - both indoor and outdoor. That means that with this lens, you will be able to get those perfect outdoor shots no matter the weather, or across the reception hall for those heart-touching moments on the dance floor.

The Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra-Wide Angle Lens

If there were an ideal wide-angle lens for weddings, the Canon EF 14mm would be the one. This Canon lens gives you extremely sharp images while minimizing distortion - both in image output and color. This is perhaps the easiest wide-angle lens to use, and Canon has once again made the housing extremely durable, while giving you the highest quality output. You will now be able to take in the entire room and wedding party with the wide angle shots that the Canon EF 14mm allows.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM Lens

For indoor and outdoor wedding portraits, the Canon EF 50mm is perfect. This lightweight lens is prime for those who want those expert wedding shots with little margin for error. This is purely a professional lens, and is designed with the experienced photographer in mind, though the output of this Canon lens is nothing short of brilliant.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens

This Canon Lens is both weather and dust sealed, with a rugged design. But don’t let the extreme durability fool you. The Canon EF 24-70mm Zoom Lens has a minimum focus distance of 1.3-feet, and can bring ultra-long distance shots into crystal clear focus. The autofocus and manual on this Canon Lens are superb, and considered the best out there for zoom wedding shots by both professionals and hobbyists alike.
The Canon EF 85mm for 1.2L II USM Lens

This Canon lens is a prime lens for wedding photographers. It’s a bit on the heavy side, but features both AF and MF, giving you complete control over your subject matter. It is important to note that this lens is electronically controlled, so the focus will only work when it is attached to your camera. The Canon EF 85mm is outstanding and bringing your subject matter into high-detail focus, while also giving you control over background blur, so your shots will stand out even more.

What subjects does it work for?

Rembrandt lighting was named after of the great master, who often used it in his own portraits. The idea is to create a small inverted triangle of light on the subject’s cheek which is opposite the light source. This is very flattering (especially for people with prominent cheekbone structure) and was often used in old Hollywood portraits. It is important to ensure that you get catch lights in both eyes.

This technique works well for subjects will full or round faces (because it adds definition and slims the face), but is generally not a good choice for narrow faces. Some ‘old school’ photographers refer to Rembrandt lighting as ‘masculine’ and some really old school portrait photographers will insist that a woman should never be lit with Rembrandt Lighting. Since Rembrandt himself painted women using basic Rembrandt Lighting, you can safely assume that this ‘rule’ is a ‘guideline’ at best.

Where does it fit in with other techniques?

This is one of the 5 basic lighting setups used in studio portrait photography; the others being Broad, Short, Split Portrait and Butterfly. There are two things that make up Rembrandt Lighting; a light on one half the subjects face and a triangle of light on the shadowed side of the face (called a chiaroscuro). Technically the triangle shadow should be no wider than the eye, and no longer than the nose. The thing that distinguishes Rembrandt Lighting from simple short lighting is the triangle of light,

This method can be considered simply a variation of short lighting. When the lighting is such that the shadow of the nose reaches the shadow side of the face and forms a triangle on the short side of the face, it is referred to as Rembrandt lighting.

Set-up

At its most basic level this lighting method is constructed with a single light source placed approximately 45 degrees offset from the subject and a bit higher than eye level, lighting the side of the face that is farthest from the camera. This single light source is often supplemented with a reflector or a second light placed approximately 45 degrees to the shadowed side of the face and set at ½ the power of the main light source (called the key light). This is used to lift the shadows on the darker side of the face.

Conclusion

Rembrandt lighting is a simple, effective lighting set-up that is flattering to a wide variety of subjects and is easy to master quickly. It’s possible to achieve using a single diffused flash unit and homemade reflector.

When a glossy picture is admired in the print media, chances are that most readers presume it is Photoshopped. In this era it is true. Some pictures have inherent qualities that define their natural elements. It is left to the discretion of the professional editor who is retouching the image to decide which qualities i.e. imperfections look ‘good’ and delete the ‘bad ones’. With years of experience doing such edits, he has certain tricks that will help him to satisfy clients.

In any Photo Retouching job the main elements that are usually handled are:

1. The skin tone on face and exposed areas of the body
2. Red Eye, brightness and under eye circles
3. Removal of blemishes
4. Making lips look more fuller
5. Readjusting the body contours

With this tool other treatments may also be adopted to have a better photo finish.

Where does the misunderstanding occur?

While the virtual results are fantastic, the original pales in comparison. This can be a real eyesore! Examples abound in pictures of several prospective brides and grooms who put up their profile pictures for matrimonial purposes. They want to present their best in pictures to attract good spouses. But when the photograph is retouched, the imperfections are all gone. One has to be reasonable; the blemish on the original (not the photo but the person!) may be gone…especially if it is a birthmark. A professional editor is likely to reason with the client and provide a light shade of the blemish rather than obliterate it. It gives stability and closer to the original look. This method of photo retouching is favored. It does not create any misunderstanding. In fact such a treatment is advised for everyone.

The power of photo retouching

Another misunderstanding that most people face is that many critics complain the photo retouching hides the truth. This accusation also falls flat as it hides only the imperfections. It is well known that this is an essential treatment for photo editing firms to be in business. Several online editors do retouching jobs for photos that are important but are in a delicate state due to negligence. In such cases, the power of photo retouching cannot be denied. When a photo is restored to its original glory with the Photoshop software, it can continue to be admired for a long time. This is one reason why this treatment can be taken at its face value.

Some editors themselves confuse between a photo manipulation and a photo-retouching job. But an advanced professional knows the distinction only too well. Retouching allows the basic structure of the photo to continue. It does not alter the existing qualities other than making tonal changes to present uniformity in the visual element. Today’s power packed retouching technique is more than just airbrushing. It involves a gamut of other tools that an editing program offers. Misunderstanding only results from poor knowledge of the apparatus. So just delete the wrinkles of the mind, adopt a positive attitude and let photo-retouching present the best profile view.

The desire of many photographers is to produce good black and white photography images without any problems. This is one thing that has made many photographers to invest so much on equipment and several other things that are guaranteed to give them good results. As relevant as these steps may be in obtaining good results, sometimes the things that bring about poor image quality in black and white photos are very insignificant but basic factors that are often ignored or underestimated. Some of these factors are considered below.

Relevant Background

Often times, photographers pick the wrong type of background to use for their black and white photos. This usually affects the quality of the image significantly such that no matter what the photographer does, the image will not be as beautiful as it should have been with the right background. There are instances where the background does not complement the picture at all, and this mistake is often common with amateur photographers. Professional photographers usually have a variety of backgrounds they use. And many times, they try different backgrounds before selecting which of them to use. Many of them with computers also have soft copies of backgrounds which they use in post production when a picture is being edited.

Using the Right Contrast

Another common mistake that is often made which affects the quality of black and white photography images is the image contrast. Many black and white photographers find it tasking to adjust the features of an image in order to get the right level of all the features. This brings out the beauty of the overall image especially when other features like texture, brightness, etc are gotten correctly.

Using Good Digital Cameras

Good digital cameras are also very useful in producing good black and white images. This type of cameras makes several things to become very easy to do. Several image features can be adjusted easily or even set on automatic if the right settings are not known. The cameras also present some advantages that are not common with other type of cameras. The images can be shot in grayscale, several shots can be taken at the same time, images can be saved on the camera or on an external storage device in different formats etc. All of these are advantages that the digital camera gives to a photographer in order to help them produce good images. However, these digital cameras used in black and white photography can be very expensive.

People often underestimate the importance of product photography and make cut backs. They do this by either hiring an amateur photographer, or searching for the cheapest photography studio they can find. This no doubt reflects in the photography, and therefore will also reflect in the appearance of the product to consumers.

When you look at an advert or a commercial what is the first thing you look at? The text or the image? Well its been proven that people first acknowledge the imagery over anything else. What is the reason behind this you might ask. There are in-fact many reasons why people first look at the imagery of the product photography over everything else and these include.

It is a lot quicker to look at an image than it is to read text

An image can stick out at you more than text

People refer to things they are buying first from appearance rather than description

These are just some of the reasons as to why people look at the product photography first.

Now you know that the product photography is something people first look at you should know it is importance. If the product photography is poor people will then most likely think that the product is poor. Though this may not always be true it is what your potential customers will think. Do you want your customers thinking this? I hope not as this reflects on your business as a whole not just your products. If you don’t have professional product photography people will resemble your company as not being professional.

Now we will look at an example in the technology industry. We all new the giant that is Apple who produce various kinds of portable devices and Macs. Do you think they could have been so effective in their marketing campaigns and advertising if they had poor photography? Certainly not. Apple will have the best product photography in the business to resemble that their product is also the best product out there in their market. I hope you see now from a real life example why the photography is as important as it is.

Just to take this further put yourself in the position of a consumer looking to purchase a brand new car. The adverts are designed to draw you in and make you want to the car. How do they draw you in and make you want to buy? Well one of the main features is the product photography! Imagine if the latest car from one of the world biggest car suppliers had product photography like you saw on the likes of auto trader websites and eBay. You wouldn’t be drawn into the advert as the product looks unprofessional, and if your parting with your own money people will look else where. Now that is something you can’t afford to do. Professional product photography can even make products that are not of a very good standard look great.

The growing trend ‘i-phoneography’ challenges the concept of traditional photography, although it could be argued that this is merely a process of technological evolution in an age where technology and social trends are becoming increasingly interrelated.

It is undeniable that the image quality that can be achieved from mobile phones is amazing considering that lens technology did not exist in phones until 2002. Since then progress has been relentless, 61% of the global population is now using a mobile phone.

One serious effect of this increase concerning photographers is just how much will the digital camera market be affected? With more people choosing to use their mobile phones to take photographs digital cameras run the risk of becoming obsolete. Good news for phone manufactures, bad news for the camera industry.

With this considered should we be embracing or resisting this trend shift? My personal view is that although phone technology is advancing it is only impacting amateur photographers and enthusiasts. The more serious and professional photographers will always use digital SLR’Ss. Also phone cameras still have a long way to go before their integrated technology can match the performance of an SLR.

One huge benefit of having a camera within a phone is that it can be very liberating by bringing the beauty of photography to millions of people who otherwise would most probably not participate.

Perhaps the biggest impact of phone camera’s is ‘realtime global documentation.’ By this i mean that news stories and events can be documented and shared around the world in almost realtime. The ability to view the world as others see it instantly. If used correctly for educational and reporting purposes this surely has to be the greatest result of I-Phoneography’

For those who embrace the trend here are a few tips to consider.

1. Capture. The beauty of an iphone is that it allows you to take a photo instantly without too much planning, use this to your advantage and never miss an opportunity.

2. Use apps. The app store offers a huge collection of apps that can create almost any effect imaginable for your images.

3. Share. Don’t be greedy, upload your work on social media sites and showcase your talent to the world!

4. Engage. Give feedback on other peoples images, share information and advice, you may even begin to develop a following.

5. Manage. Get into good habits such as deleting unwanted images, and backing up your data. Why not Sync with i-photo and make storage of your data efficient and easy to navigate.

Black and white pictures were developed long before color pictures or even television and movies were around. Much of the history of modern photography is recorded in this form or known as monochromatic.

Historically, photographs were created in dark and light spots and overall this creates the black and white look of the images. What looks to be black would sometimes be a brown or grey in color.

The Death Of Black And White- About 1975, the birth of the color image came to rise and the popularity of black and white photography began to crumble and it crumbled fast and hard.

Manufacturers of film were developing all kinds of color film at very low prices. Black and white film could not compete with the higher quality and lower priced color film. The few film developers that were making this film declined in their production and came to a halt.

The attention of the film customer was forever turned towards the colored film market and they never looked back. Black and white film started to be looked at as very difficult to use and this created a bigger shift in the use of color film. During that period of time, a lot of people started to get into photography as a hobby but many did not have the privilege of learning about anything but color photography. It was all about color photography and the advertising agencies were instrumental in leading the way.

Black and White Makes Come Back- Starting around the mid 1980’s, the once dead film returns from the grave and photographers embrace this aspect of the art and this medium flies high again. People were seeing how beautiful this form of photography can be.

You can see it being used in magazines for print advertisements as well as TV and online advertisements. You can even take courses that specifically teach the art and beauty of this forum of photography.

This form of photography has come full circle from once a sunset art medium to a very vibrant medium that is often times the photographers choice over color photography. If you’re a new photographer and experienced and have an interest in learning more about specializing in black and white photography, look in your area for schools and stand alone courses that instructs on black and white photography.

If the schools turn out to be too pricey for your budget, head on over to your local library and check out a few good books on the subject of taking black and white photos. You’ll probably have to visit the largest library in your city or if your city has a college or university, be sure to visit that library as well.

The camera industry has certainly advanced throughout time, from images on silver chloride paper to the invention of digital. With so many different choices available, choosing a suitable appears to be as difficult as rocket science. There’s no denying that digital reviews are helpful but only to a certain extent. Digital reviews are normally divided into 5 sections, point and shoot, DLSRs, compact interchangeable-lens, super zoom and tough rugged.

Choosing between these 5 classes can be hard enough but here’s my advice, if you’re not a professional photographer or a nature explorer, the most ideal type of would be the point and shoot. Based on digital reviews, the ultimate point and shoot for the year 2011 is the Canon PowerShot S95. This 10.0 Mp CCD Sensor has a 3 inch screen and weighs 195 grams. This will set you back about USD 400.00.

The Nikon Coolpix S 9100 ranks second in the rating’s list. This 12.1 megapixel has a 18x optical zoom capability. This 2.5 x 4.2 x 1.4 inch comes in three different colours, black, red and silver. The market price for this is USD 330.00. The third best on the list is the Nikon Coolpix P300 which costs about USD 300.00. This 12 megapixel camera has a 3 inch screen weighs about 6.7 ounces.

Occupying the fourth place is the one and only Canon PowerShot SD 4000. This is a 10 megapixel camera has a 4x optical zoom capability and uses a SD memory card. This camera has a 3 inch screen weighs about 6.1 ounces. After the Canon PowerShot SD 4000 comes the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX10. This 16 Mp CMOS sensor camera is worth USD 280.00 and has a 2.8 inch LCD screen. It has a 7x optical zoom lens and weighs 5.8 ounces.

The sixth place goes to Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS which has a market price of USD 300.00. Similar to the camera before, this camera has a CMOs sensor. This 12 Mp camera has a 3.2 inch camera screen and the screen is touch sensitive. Next in line would be the Fujifilm FinePix Z800EXR, a 12 megapixel camera with a Super CCD sensor. It can zoom up to five times, has a 3.5 inch LCD screen and weighs about 5.6 ounces.

The Casio Tryx Digital Camera ranks 8th on the list and will set you back around USD 280.00. It has a CMOS sensor and a 12 megapixel lens. Its 3 inch screen is touch sensitive and weighs 5.5 ounces. The 9th camera in the digital camera reviews for the point and shoot class would be the Canon PowerShot A3300 IS digital camera. This camera weighs 5.3 ounce and is 3.7 x 2.2 x 0.9 inches big. This 16 megapixel camera has a 3 inch LCD screen and can zoom up to 5 times.

The last camera to be on the rating’s list is the Samsung SH 100. This camera has a 14 megapixel lens and uses a CCD image sensor. This 3.6 x 2.1 x 0.7inch will come with a 1 year warranty.
