Although I’d selected India as the country, it never installed the local language fonts and I think that’s kind of bad on the part of Apple. Anyway, let me tell you that how we can install various languages :

1. Go to the apple menu.
2. click on System preferences.
3. Go to International icon.
4. Click on Edit List under the language tab.
5. Tick mark Hindi or any other language which you want to add.

That’s it. This installs the language support for other languages and you won’t see the garbled text as by default Firefox works on UTF-8 Encoding and thus you’ll be able to see webpages in your local language.

This post is dedicated to Chyrp as yesterday was the first time, when I tried it and fell in love with it. What I really loved about it was that it’s pretty light weight, extendable and pretty easy to use.

Here’s what Chyrp has to say about itself :

“Chyrp is a blogging engine designed to be very lightweight while retaining functionality. It is driven by PHP and MySQL (with some AJAX thrown in), and has a pimpin’ theme and module engine, so you can personalize it however you want.”

Well, after looking at Chyrp and the way it works, I got a feeling that I’m looking at a stripped version of WordPress but still holds all the power to be extended to a level that it can compete with WordPress. Well, that may be called exaggeration but I can say that it really impressed me too much. In fact after such a long time, any product excited me so much.

Chyrp can be extended like WordPress with available modules (plugins in case of WP) and has got themes too. However, I still believe that theme engine of WordPress is far better than any other blog client.

To be honest, it’ll be unfair to compare Chyrp with WP and it will be called a direct competitor to Tumblr and I believe that it certainly deserves more and more praise than it gets. It’s pretty simple to use and installing it, is simplest stuff you can ever think of. It’s even simpler than WordPress. What the heck! you can test drive it right away and I’m sure you’ll know what I’m referring to.

I’ve built my own profile (mayank) on Chyrp platform and will extend it further according to my own needs. I believe that if you are thinking of starting a tumblelog/micro-blog then you should consider Chyrp as it’s powerful and extendable.

However, Jim has created 10 videos and talks about various aspects of podcasting, how to create podcasts and even tells you that while doing a podcast, how important is lightning, sound and your clothes can be. He even tells you that what camera you should opt for, if at all you decide to start a podcast.

Note this is a contest entry plus a resource entry for every to know that yes, it makes sense to start a podcast and may be this is my first step to jump into podcasting, may be I’m just being camera shy. Anyone for the podcasts ?

When it comes to finance management, many people prefer it the old method of writing the finance entries in diaries or specific books as they find it pretty handy and safe to do so. However in this digital age, where computer games are one of the first games kids play with, can we expect them to maintain their financial records on the same old books? I guess not! In fact, I want to keep my own financial records on the computer because I believe that it’s more safe and easy to maintain too.

There are many software available on windows when it comes to personal finance management and Microsoft Money is one of the most respected software in that field. However, when it comes to OS X I guess the software that I’m reviewing right now has to be one of the easiest and best software ever for personal finance management.

CheckBook allows you to add multiple accounts and gives a very simple to use interface that anyone who isn’t good with accounting can use the software without any problem. Although, I’ve studied some accounting but still I know that I know nothing about it. I was able to create the entries and it showed me various reports and thus helped me know that where and how my money is flowing. It even let you mark the entries (deposits) as taxable or not.

There are other personal finance management software available and none of them has looked so impressive. I’ll continue reviewing other software in this field and will post in case I find anything better than CheckBook, however till this time I’m going to keep my finances with this software only.

The good features about this particular feed plugin is that it processes PHP codes too, so if you want to display something which is generated by any other plugin for e.g. if you’ll put <? php echo bookmark_me(); ? > (provided you use the bookmark me plugin from the same author), then it will display the bookmarking icons in the feed.

Like this you can include images and whatever you can imagine in the feeds, just don’t try to put javascript stuff in it (read : google adsense).

Note : I’ve just activated this plugin and this is sort of a test of the plugin too (I’ve put some code in it, lets see that how it goes).

I agree with Jim on this part completely and I’ll say that here are some of the reasons why I would like to start a podcast of my own or may be screencasts :

1. It’s the right time to start one. (The point made by Jim).
2. Monetizing them isn’t difficult too : there are services like Revver, Metacafe, Kaltura (still not released but have the plans to share the money) which allow you to earn money through the videos, which allow you to upload.
3. Helps build authority : Various websites like YouTube, Revver, MetaCafe attract millions of users and if you build a pretty impressive video then those videos will help you in building authority as you’ll be able to brand yourself in front of those millions of users.
4. Helps in driving traffic : You get to include the link to your own website in the description of the videos, you can put your website address as the watermark in the videos too and that can certainly help in driving the traffic to your blog/website.

Well with all these benefits I certainly believe that it’s a nice idea to start a podcast and now my question for you is that what kind of videos/screencasts would you like to see on this blog. I’m certainly going for it and I hope that you too should also start one.

Well, for lazy people like me software or utilities like CatEye come pretty handy. This utility puts various effects in photobooth and iChat. So if you want to take a still photograph showing the retro effect then it will be as simple as clicking a picture from Photobooth or while chatting with your friends you can show these wonderful effects through the iSight webcam.

CatEye package comes with RetroPixels, Love for 80s and Bent Pels effects packages and is pretty simple to install, just extract the .QTZ files into the folder /Library/Compositions. That’s it and when ever you’ll open PhotoBooth or will launch iChat, it’ll show you the list of effects like you see in the above given image.

We’ve reviewed quite a few application launchers of OS X and every time loved the utilities as they were not only getting better as an application launcher but making life simpler for a user and this time we are reviewing aLunch. Although, aLaunch would have been a better name for it, so the developer can take one suggestion on the name itself.

Till this time I was impressed by TigerLaunch (our review), however aLunch is one step better than TigerLaunch as it allows us to create sub menus and that was the only missing feature in TigerLaunch. Another additional feature of aLunch is that it not only allows you to put the shortcut for applications, it lets you put you the shortcuts of folders and files too.

You have to configure the menu completely and I guess that it can be a Pro and Con both. I find no problems in configuring the menu from scratch, as I find it better that I get to take control of the menu from the word go, however few may find it irritating that it doesn’t even list the applications.

It supports drag and drop of application so it becomes fairly easy to add applications or files in the menu.

Overall, it’s a wonderful utility and is the perfect application launcher ever built for Mac OS X.

Strange fact is that you can’t see the update status feature until and unless you go in the edit profile and until you click on the Update button. Once you do that you’ll get the option of updating the status and that’s just below your name.

Well, as Thilak suggested that it’ll be cool if Orkut could integrate twitter with it and it will also be cool if at all, it puts the updated message in the update timeline or may be if it puts it right below the profile name (in left sidebar, where we get the status message of Gtalk).

Well, I guess someone should come up with a Twitter update orkut app, after all Orkut now supports app installation.
