If you like word puzzles and word games, these are the ten iPhone apps you must have for hours of word-guessing, letter-twisting fun.

1. Words with Friends

If you are not already playing Words with Friends, get the free version now, click on “random opponent” and give it a try. The game play is similar to Scrabble, but the tile distribution and layout of the bonus spaces on the board make it much easier. You play against another live player, taking your turn, and then waiting for your opponent to respond. Games can take days, but addicts of the game ease their waiting time by playing multiple games at once. The game comes in two flavors, a free one (ad supported) and a paid for one.

2. Scrabble

If you cannot stand waiting for your next turn on Words with Friends, you can play against the machine with the app of the original classic. You can set the game to play against you at three difficulty levels. Beware, however, that there is no free version of this app.

3. IAssociate

A uniquely handcrafted word game, iAssociate has several free sample boards under the title “Associate This.” The full game, however, comes with several boards, which you unlock with your progress and scoring on the previous boards. Each board has a theme and starts with one word. From that word, you guess related (or “associated”) words and phrases, which then branch out in all directions, creating a web all over the screen. Zooming in and out is easy, but typos are not corrected or overlooked. If you have trouble typing on the iPhone, this game can be frustrating.

4. Crossword Light

This free crossword puzzle app comes with 40 puzzles. You can upgrade in the app when you run out, but the free version will keep you puzzling for a while. The controls to zoom in and toggle between across and down are smooth and instinctive. You can view the clues in a list or one at a time at the bottom of the screen. The puzzles are all of moderate difficulty. For an average puzzler, they will all be easy to start, but challenging to finish, making this app just the right level to be fun, but not too easy. For a bigger challenge, try NYTimes Crosswords, which is a free app including about 30 older New York Times puzzles. After that, however, the New York Times app requires a subscription to play more.

5. Moxie/M2

Moxie is a tricky word and strategy game that really is different from anything else. Working with up to three words at a time, you must place letters as they come from the deck. With each placement, you want to build words and then change words by replacing one letter at a time. For example, if you have already made the word “fox,” you can place a “b” to create “box.” You score points for each new word you spell. If you place a letter that destroys a word, though, you lose points. M2, the newer version of Moxie includes a daily challenge mode, which begins with letters already placed instead of three blank lines.

6. Word Warp

This anagram game has the most basic controls. Given six jumbled letters, you tap on the letters to create words. Like many similar games, the goal is to guess all the three- to six-letter words that can be formed from the six letters you are given. You must guess the six-letter word to move on to the next level and keep increasing your score. To help your Scrabble score by practicing seven-letter words, try another anagram game called Jumbline.

7. Word Freak

In this game, the goal is to guess a five-letter word. Given the first letter, you take a guess. Reminiscent of the classic game Mastermind, the game then tells you how many of your letters were correct and how many of those were in the correct place. You continue to guess, using logic and word knowledge, until you guess the correct word.

8. Book Worm

This app is the same as the popular online game. On a board of scrambled letters, you connect a chain that forms a word and enter it. Those letters vanish and the columns fall down, with new letters filling in from the top. Burning letters must be used before they reach the bottom and bonus letters can be used for extra points. The game is easy to begin with, but can become very challenging if you use too many easy letters, leaving yourself with a pileup of less common letters later.

9. Word Search

There are many word search games, but the thematic entries here make the game fun. The controls are simple, allowing you to drag a line over the word when you find it, or tap on the first and then the last letters of the word. A very basic game, this is great for lovers of word search puzzles.

10. Hangman Classic

Simple and quick to play, this game is exactly what it claims to be. Because it has a good word list, the game offers a fun level of challenge. Try Hangman Classic Free to try it our first with a smaller word list.

Technological market domination changes quickly. Before Facebook “FB”, we had MySpace. But before MySpace there were instant messaging programs – chat apps. MSN Messenger, AIM, Yahoo Messenger and ICQ dominated the chat app market until users decided that instant messaging was really rather too instant and that wall posts were the new standard for communication – where we could sit and admire our witty and thought-provoking correspondence long into the night.

In April 2008, FB married the two forms of communication together to produce FB Chat which had the Google ‘more bones than meat’ approach. Simply put, FB chat gave us functionality over presentation, but essentially provided yet another communication option. If Facebook private messaging was FB’s version of Gmail, then FB chat was definitely Facebook’s version of in-browser Google Talk.

So, what do you do if you want the convenience of FB Chat, but like a traditional chat app?

Cue Chit Chat for FB. The fb chat app download was a pretty quick and mess-free install (ideal for a technophobe like me!) Within a couple of minutes the FB chat app, Chit Chat, was up and running.

From a design perspective, I felt immediately at ease with the professional and simplistic chat window. It has a clean, sparse layout. Some might find the look a little basic but it has the fundamentals you need to get talking to your FB friends. The status bar at the top of the window is a useful addition to update your status without having to log into FB on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome.

For those who remember MSN Messenger, whereby you had the option of countless fonts, emoticons and even sound files will immediately feel at home with this FB Chat app.

There are a host of modifications available in the Tools tab, among which I found the ability to alter notification tones to any audio file particularly useful. Moreover, the chat app also features the ability to let people know what you’re listening to using the Music Status Alerts, which sync with Winamp and Windows Media Player. Of course, it was also handy to be able to turn these notifications off when I was feeling anti-social, but there certainly is scope for customisation.

Whilst the design might seem Spartan, the conversation window provides many more options including support of limitless fonts and emoticons. Also, for those who remember trying to decipher tiny and hard-to-read fonts on previous instant messaging programs, Chit Chat for Facebook allows you to edit the way your friends’ fonts appear in your conversations.

The conversation window is tabbed, so you can flick between FB conversations without having to minimize windows and if you’ve logged in after a few too many beverages to talk to your ex, you won’t be able to stop her from reading your lovely drunken messages, but you can at least save your conversation so you’ll understand why you’re still single in the morning! Equally, you can clear the FB chat history if your cyber love letters were really that cringe worthy.

Chit Chat for FB is a program for people who want to chat to their friends real-time but for whom FB Chat isn’t quite comprehensive enough. It’s more customisable, just as easy to use but more importantly, can be used a standalone instant messenger so you don’t even need to load your internet explorer.

I’m quite amazed to see that how one of our post about YouTube not working has attracted quite a good amount of visitors on this blog. Anyway, I thought that I would also like to add that it was for a short amount of moment that YouTube didn’t work for me and I was really asking our readers if they were facing any issues.

Other than that, I faced a similar kind of problem. However, it was not the same problem as I faced at the moment. It is more related to my inability to play videos that are played under Vevo’s brand on Youtube. Here’s one of them.

The music is available not only through Vevo’s own website, its also available on YouTube. However, when I try to go on Vevo’s website, this is what I get to see -

When I thought of playing some videos on YouTube, I noticed that they at least open, however they are Vevo branded player and somehow are not streaming the videos right. Although, at the same time if I stream any other Youtube video under YouTube’s branded player they stream and work fine.

So, is it the issue with everyone who are not in the country where Vevo isn’t available or is it only happening to me? Please share your experience with these videos.

Microsoft Surface is brilliant! I know that most of you will already know that what exactly this is all about, however I was so much moved by looking at the video of Microsoft Surface that I couldn’t control myself from not publishing anything about it – even after long time.

I just hope that we get Microsoft Surface and if at all we can play around with it in our homes, I’ll be probably one of the firsts to buy one (provided it gets dead cheap :P) This revolutionary product will surely change the way we use computers. With my jaws still dropped, I can only say one thing – Computer are becoming more human!

In a recent report published on IndiaTimes, I found out that how much piracy is costing companies like Microsoft. According to the news, nearly 50,000 copies of Pirated Windows 7 has been sold in a city like Lucknow. The average price of pirated windows 7 is about Rs.100 ( around 2 dollars), so the total amount is nearly $ 100,000! Now, that much amount of business is of Pirated Windows 7, the actual legal copy’s business will be around $10 Million!

So if city like Lucknow where the IT industry or business industry is small as compared to the metros, is costing nearly $10 million to Microsoft then I’m sure that the number will be way to high when it comes to cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Bangalore and so on..

Imagine that if the companies will reduce the price to an extent where people will prefer to use an original copy of the operating system, I’m sure that they’ll be able to make more than double their revenues and will be able to sell more services to those customers – Did someone mention the word SaaS (software as a service)?

Anyway, this situation is not bad till here, it starts to look ugly when you’ll know that most of the computer shop owners sell these pirated windows 7 copies and defend themselves by saying that if these things are available on the internet for free, then why sell original copy. They even say that if I’ll not do it, someone else will do it!

That story is from the shop keepers side, I’m sure most of you’ll not be amazed when I’ll tell you that these shop keepers easily sell the pirated copies to the customers because many of the Indian customers don’t have any idea about computers and they don’t even know that one needs to pay a heavy amount to the companies for buying a legal copy of the operating system. What are your thoughts on the same topic? In our next discussion we’ll talk about making use of Linux and ensuring that you get use the computer and still use a legal copy and that too all for free!
