Review Time! Custom Mala Shop's Exclusive Lotus Seed and Lapis Lazuli 108 Bead Mala

An Amazing Mala!

Until recently I had never known the pleasure of meditating with a lotus seed Mala. You may be wondering why I never tried this type of Mala until now. I was under the false impression that lotus seeds were fragile, thus I chose gemstones or wooden Malas over lotus seeds Malas. The idea that lotus seeds are fragile could not be farther from the truth. Lotus seeds are light weight yet very durable – dare I say more durable than wooden beads? Combine their durability and light weight with the texture of the lotus seeds and you have a Mala that is a pleasure to use on a daily bases without fear of breaking.

What Makes this Mala Unique?:

One of the aspects that set this Mala apart from others is the re-drilling work that was done to the beads. The re-drilling allows the beads to be strung onto a durable cord that is thicker and stronger than 90% of the Malas in my collection - honestly I don’t see how anyone could break this Mala through normal use. Re-drilling is a time consuming process that requests patience and thus costs more. However, re-drilling is worth every penny! Re-drilling each bead individually is the only way to be able to thread beads onto such a think cord - ensuring that the Mala will last for years. To the best of my knowledge Jason Walz of Custom Mala Shop is the only person who offers this opinion. Below is a photo which showcases the difference between re-drilled beads and standard beads.

Another aspect which makes this Mala unique is use of symbolism incorporated by the beads. Lapis lazuli, sterling silver and lotus seeds all have deep rooted symbolism that calls to people of all faiths and walks of life.

Lapis Lazuli Beads:

Meditating with Lapis Lazuli is thought to bring inner peace, assist with openness, strengthen inner power, help one to express love, expand intuitive skills, and bring purification. In ancient times Lapis Lazuli was thought to strengthen the mind and body, allowing one's inner power to manifest. It was also thought to purify one's thoughts and bring inner peace. Symbolically Lapis Lazuli represents the power of the spoken word and is thought to help foster verbal expression, and clear problems caused by fear of speaking in public. Lapis Lazuli is said to encourage clear, truthful expression when sharing information with others. The ancient Egyptians used Lapis Lazuli as a symbol of Truth. Practitioners of crystal healing say that Lapis Lazuli is a good stone to expand intuitive skills while remaining objective and open to reasoned analysis. It is also thought that this gemstone shields against negative emotions.

Fun Fact: Lapis Lazuli is said to have been in existence since the birth of time, and was used by ancient Hebrews on ceremonial robes. Lapis Lazuli is one of the original stones in the breastplate of the High Priest.

Sterling Silver Spacer Beads:

Silver is a metal associated with intuition, love, inner peace and protection. Symbolically silver relates to the moon and is often associated with the yin or feminine energies. For this reason it is thought to help overcome aggressiveness by bringing peace into one's awareness. It is also said that silver acts as a "mirror to the soul", allowing one to see deep within one’s self with absolutely no judgment.

Lotus Seeds:

The significance of lotus seeds relates back to the symbolic meaning of the lotus flower – a symbol of spiritual knowledge and power. The life of the lotus flower begins in the mud, yet it rises from this humble beginning and unfolds into one of the most beautiful flowers on earth. Lotus flowers spend their life in water; however falling rain drops will not stick on to its petals – they simply roll off the flower and fall into the water. Just as rain drops cannot change the beauty of the lotus flower, so too can this be for one who is spiritually attended with their soul. When truly in touch with Spirit the cares of the world no longer have the weight that they once did – worries and fears roll off just as rain on the lotus flower.

History

Buddhist prayer beads, traditionally called Malas, first developed as a religious tool on the Indian continent. "The use of beads in prayer appears to have originated with Hindu religious practices in India, possibly around the 8th century," writes the Museum of Anthropology at the University of Missouri. Since the 8^th century the practice of using a Mala during meditating has been seen in Buddhism, Hindus and among those from any walk of life who enjoy meditation.

Identification

Standard Buddhists Mala normally consist of 108 beads, but the number may vary in different sects of Buddhism. Each bead is a symbol of impurities and flaws that an individual must overcome.
108 beads is said to represent the following formula:
6 x 3 x 2 x3 = 108
6 senses of a human being: sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, thought
3 times: past, present, future
2 conditions of heart, mind or intention: pure or impure
3 disturbing emotional states or "kleshia": like, dislike, indifference

Significance in Buddhism

The Buddha himself is believed to have instructed his followers to utilize the use of Malas. There is a Sutra (Buddhist Text) in which a King asks to the Buddha for a simple practice to help ease his suffering from various difficulties. Buddha responded by telling him to string 108 seeds and recite the three part refuge prayer upon them.

Origin

The word Mala, also referred to as japa Mala, is derived from the Indian Sanskrit phrase for garland. The English word rosary, the western term for prayer beads, owes its etymology to Roman miscommunication. "When Roman explorers came into India and encountered the Mala, they heard japa Mala, and japa for the Romans meant 'rose,'' according to ReligionFacts.com. The word "rosary" eventually evolved from that translation as Romans carried the prayer bead concept back to the western world.

Why 108 beads?

Generally, a standard Mala consists of 108+1 beads with a knot between the beads. The number 108 has several meanings. Some of them are:

27 constellations x 4 padas(parts) = 108
12 zodiac houses x 9 planets = 108
Upanishats Scriptures of the Vedas = 108

This basically means that the 108 beads represent the entire universe to many people – which in turn symbolizes being one with the universe and realizing your place in the universe. This Mala is a standard 108 count Mala designed for meditation and spiritual practices. Malas can be used by people of all faiths to enhance their spiritually.

Artist Bio:

"My name is Jason Walz and I am the proprietor of the Custom Mala Shop. I consider myself a non-denominational Dharma Practitioner who follows no single teacher or lineage. I originally became interested in Dharma Practice through the Martial Arts and Taoism. While practicing martial arts I became much more interested in the "why" of the arts rather than the physical process (although really they are one and the same). So, I first started to investigate Taoism. That in turn led me to investigate Buddhism and the Buddha's teachings. The Four Noble Truths and the Eight Fold Path resonated with me immediately. I had always been interested in religion in general (I have a BA in anthropology) but the Buddha's teachings seemed to transcend the rote scholarly approach to religion. They offered to me a way to approach life that simply "made sense".

Now, several years later, I no longer practice the martial arts but I focus a great deal of my time not only contemplating the Buddha's teachings but also hopefully living them partially through my effort of practicing Right Livelihood. Right Livelihood is of course the 5th step in the Eight Fold Path. It is through Right Livelihood that one attempts to earn a living while not harming others; while not acting selfishly; while contributing to the lessening of the suffering of others. I hope that the Malas I make help to accomplish this. Making Malas also allows me to express myself artistically. Although really it is the customer who comes up with the majority of the creativity involved I do get to play at "artist" as I put together the customer's creation. I get great satisfaction and peace from doing something as simple as watching a diamond tipped drill bit slowly sink into a lapis bead. I find it relaxing to sit and drop bead after bead onto a strand of cord and listen to the "clack-clack-clack".

A little more biographically speaking I am a single dad of two stunningly wonderful kids. I also have two Rhodesian Ridgebacks that help me make Malas by sleeping on the sofa all day (or under my feet!). I live in sunny Mesa Arizona and ride my mountain bike on the local trails daily. I recently (as of June 2011) left my regular 9-5 job in favor of making Malas full-time. The Custom Mala Shop is now my main source of income although I am still doing as little database management on a consulting basis." ~ Jason Walz

My Personal Opinion:

My Altar Featuring Jason's Amazing Malas!

Over the past few years I have used many Malas during mediation. Yet the ones created by Jason Walz stand above the rest. I can feel the love and care that he puts into each Mala which truly makes using one of his Malas a wonderful experience. Meditating with this Mala is a peaceful experience – personally I find the textile feel of the lotus seeds to be very comforting and relaxing. This comforting feeling draws me deeper into my meditation experience. This Mala combines the amazing energy of lapis lazli with the life giving energy of lotus seeds. For me this blinding of plant energy with gemstones is simply amazing.

My Personal Opinion:

Writer’s block is the bane of every writer. As a writer I can tell you that I would try anything to inspire my creativity – meditation, painting, reading and even praying. I’ve found that at times all it takes is just one spark to open my mind to all the creative possibilities that lay before me. However, igniting that spark can be challenging. “Our Lady of Fatima I chose for peace in the world. Writers can reach people, and I would hope in a way that encourages healing, peace, joy, and comfort during sorrowful times. Although the Fatima Chaplet was originally written to invoke Our Lady to consecrate and convert Russia (per Her request when She appeared at Fatima), I often substitute the words "Planet Earth" for Russia. My Personal Opinion:

How to Pray the Writer’s Chaplet:
My favorite thing about Lynn Miesch’s combo-chaplets is how they are prayed. The idea of many prayer chaplets in one makes praying multiple chaplets simple. Below are her instructions on how to pray the many chaplets that together make up the prayers of her Writer’s Chaplet. This information was shared with me by the artist.

How to pray the Chaplet of Saint Raphael the Archangel:

The chaplet of St. Raphael the Archangel is prayed on a total of 12 beads (the larger set of 9 beads and the 3 additional beads that are above the St. Raphael medal).

Begin on the medal, pray the following words:

"You are Raphael the Healer,
You are Raphael the Guide,
You are Raphael the Companion
Ever at human sorrow's side."

On each of the 3 small beads, say the “Hail Mary” to Mary, the Queen of angels.
“Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen.”

Each large bead represents one of the 9 orders of the angelic choir: Angels, Archangels, Thrones, Dominations, Virtues, Principalities, Powers, Cherubim and Seraphim. On each of the 9 large beads, pray the following in honor of the corresponding angelic choir:
“Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of Hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your Glory!
Glory be to the Father:
Glory be to the Son;
Glory be to the Holy Spirit!”

Conclude the Chaplet with the following prayer on the Cross:

"Saint Raphael, angel of health, of love,
of joy and light, pray for us."

How to pray the Chaplet of Saint Jude:

This Chaplet has begins on the Cross, moves through the 9 beads and concludes on Medal of Saint Jude.

On the cross, say the following prayer:

“Saint Jude, glorious Apostle, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor has caused you to be forgotten by many but the true Church invokes you universally
as the Patron of things despaired of; pray for me,
that finally I may receive the consolations and the succor of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, particularly... (State your intention here.)
and that I may bless God with the Elect throughout Eternity. Amen.”
On each of the 9 beads recite the “Hail Mary” and the following invocation.

“Saint Jude, Apostle, martyr, and relative of Our Lord Jesus Christ, of Mary and of Joseph, intercede for us.”

At the end of the Chaplet, say the following prayers:

“May the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
be adored, and loved
in all the tabernacles until the end of time. Amen.”

Our Lady of Fatima was chosen for use in the Writer’s Chaplet for peace in the world.

On the Cross pray the following prayer.
“Most Holy Virgin who has appeared to the children of Fatima to reveal the glories of the rosary, inspire our hearts to obtain peace for the world and the end of war, the conversion and consecration of Russia*, and the conversion of sinners. Assist us, Our Lady of the Rosary, at the hour of need in securing the graces needed for the salvation of all those who go to confession, receive the Holy Communion, and recite the rosary and meditate on its mysteries. Amen.”

On each of the first set of 3 beads, recite the “Our Father”.
“Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.”

Review Time! Unbreakable Chaplet of St. Agatha by Food for the Soul

During my search for handmade chaplets I discovered a wonderful shop “Food for the Soul by Artisan Holly Blinn”. As someone who collects prayer beads I could tell right away that her prayer beads were different from others I’ve seen. Like any rosary-addict, I found myself wanting to know more about these beautiful handcraft works of art and the person who creates them. What follows is my review of Food for the Soul’s pink tourmaline Chaplet of St. Agatha.

About the Quality and Craftsmanship of this Chaplet:

Materials:

· 8mm faceted pink tourmaline

The quality of these gemstone beads are simply breath-taking. Each bead is of the same color and clarity. When dealing with natural gemstone beads –especially those of the tourmaline family- it can be difficult to find beads of the same color-tone and clarity. These are the clearest and most vibrant pink tourmaline beads I ever had the pleasure of seeing in person. Pink in its self is an uplifting color, yet this shade of pink is somehow more uplifting than other shades I’ve seen (and as a pink-oholic I would know!) The faceted design of these beads give the pink tourmaline a mystic look and feel – which adds a wonderful touch to this chaplet.

· Lead-free Tibetan silver bead caps and spacer beads

The bead caps are seated firmly in place and are just the right size to highlight the 8mm beads. Personally the design of the bead caps reminds me of flowers – again a wonderful uplifting touch for this chaplet.

· 20 gauge nickel silver wrapping wire

This gauge is very strong and durable ensuring that the chaplet will last a life time. As someone who works with wire as a hobby I am amazed by how well the artist created these unbreakable links. Although I lack the skill to ever create such links, I am greatly impressed by how prefect each of the artist’s links are. Even the ends of the wire are hidden which is amazing.

· Lampwork glass pink ribbon bead

The pink ribbon bead adds a beautiful touch that will give Breast Cancer Survivors hope and strength.

· Italian-made nickel silver medal & crucifix

The medal and crucifix are beautiful detailed and strong – which is expected for Italian-made religious products.

A Brief History:
There is little reliable information about this martyr, who has been honored since ancient times, and whose name is included in the canon of the Roman Catholic Mass. Young, beautiful and rich, Agatha lived her life devoted to God. When Decius announced the mandates against Christians, the magistrate Quinctianus tried to profit by Agatha’s purity by trying to blackmail her into sex in exchange for not charging her. Handed over to a brothel, she refused to accept customers. After rejecting Quinctianus’s advances, she was beaten, imprisoned, tortured, her breasts were crushed and cut off. She told the judge, “Cruel man, have you forgotten your mother and the breast that nourished you, that you dare to mutilate me this way?” She was imprisoned again, then rolled on live coals. When she was near death, an earthquake stuck. Agatha thanked God for an end to her pain, and died.

"When Dina asked me to write a short bio for her blog, I wasn't sure what I would say. All I could think about was how uninteresting it would be. I never got to go to college, nor have I had any great adventures in my life. I soon found out that selling jewelry is a fiercely competitive business. I was spending more money than I took in. Then one day I saw a gorgeous rosary in a catalog and something clicked. I quickly sold the first two that I made and a new business was born! I immersed myself in research to learn all that I could about rosaries, chaplets, the saints (did you know there are more than 10,000 of them?!) and Anglican prayer beads. I've now been doing this since Feb. of 2010, and the more I do it, the more I continue to learn. I feel as if my whole life has been a path leading me to learn more about my own faith, as well as helping others along their own path. My Personal Opinion:

This chaplet feels delicate to the touch, yet it is amazingly durable. The wire loops that hold the beads will not bend under normal pressure. Due to this I cannot see the chaplet ever breaking from normal usage. Ms. Blinn’s work is simply amazing. The wire loops are perfectly formed, and the ends of the wire that wraps around the loops are nowhere to be found. I cannot imagine how she made each of the wire loops identical, but it is very impressive. As someone who makes rosaries I have to say that I am beyond impressed with her work.

As for the chaplet itself, I’ve found that praying the Chaplet of St. Agatha is a relaxing spiritual experience. Something about this saint seems to be calling to me. The look and feel of the chaplet is also very inviting. The pink tourmaline really highlights this chaplet for me as tourmaline is my all-time favorite gemstone (and pink is my all-time favorite color).

The Cavallini Roma Lussa 6 x 8 inch journal is simply amazing! Each aspect of this journal is made by hand in Florance, Italy. The paper is high quality, the leather cover is soft and supple, and the feel of the journal in your hands makes it a pleasure to use. Before I get to my review of this journal, I would like to note that I purchased this journal from Amazon. This is not a review sample.

About The Paper:

Unlike most journals you will find on the market, this journal contains 416 acid-free pages of thick high quality paper. The paper of this journal is thick enough for me to use a fountain pen with out any problems. For this test I used my Lamy extra fine tip fountain pen. I experienced no problems with bleed through at all which I personally find impressive. On the back of the page is some slight ghosting, but not enough to be a problem -this can be seen in the photo below.

Finding a journal that a fountain pen can be used on is hard work so I am very please with this journal. Please note: I do not know if all fountain pens will work on this type of paper, but the Lamy Safari Fountain Pen works very nicely.

The photo above shows the beautiful marble painting that decorates the edges of this journal. Personally I love the marble design and the beautiful pattern. This pattern was created by hand which makes each journal an unique work of art!

Another unique feature of this journal is its sewn binding, which is very similar to the book bindings found in high quality Bibles. Sewn book bindings last much longer than glued bindings. With a sewn binding you never have to worry about the pages falling out of the book.

In Honor of Wiccan Awareness Month:

Similar to keeping a prayer journal, Wiccans and many Pagans keep a type of spiritual journal called a Book of Shadows (BOS for short). Many people choose to use the longer name Book of Shadows and Light for their BOS, while others use the term Book of Light. Which ever name one chooses is a personal preference and the book still serves the same purposes regardless of its name. Unlike in the movies a Book of Shadows is not a standardized spell book. In fact it is usually created by the individual for personal or family usage. Unlike the prayer journals used by people of many different faiths, a Book of Shadows is created to cover a variety of topics. So whats in a BOS? Anything that is of spiritual importance to the owner - including: statements of faith, information regarding the individual's spiritual life, the individual's research into their faith and beliefs, spiritual events from the person's life, religious rituals, prayers, spells (prayers with props), and any other information regarding one's spiritual practice. Anything that one feels should be recorded for future reference is often included in their Book of Shadows. As with a prayer journal many use their BOS to follow their connection with the Creator and to keep track of their spiritual experiences. It is always good to see the progress one makes with their connection to the Divine and many use their Book of Shadows for this purpose.

History

Buddhist prayer beads, traditionally called malas, first developed as a religious tool on the Indian continent. "The use of beads in prayer appears to have originated with Hindu religious practices in India, possibly around the 8th century," writes the Museum of Anthropology at the University of Missouri. Since the 8^th century the practice of using a mala during meditating as been seen in Buddhism, Hindus and among those from any walk of life who enjoy meditation.

Identification

Standard Buddhists mala normally consist of 108 beads, but the number may vary in different sects of Buddhism. Each bead is a symbol of impurities and flaws that an individual must overcome.
108 beads is said to represent the following formula:
6 x 3 x 2 x3 = 108
6 senses of a human being: sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, thought
3 times: past, present, future
2 conditions of heart, mind or intention: pure or impure
3 disturbing emotional states or "kleshia": like, dislike, indifference

Significance in Buddhism

The Buddha himself is believed to have instructed his followers to utilize the use of malas. There is a Sutra (Buddhist Text) in which a King asks to the Buddha for a simple practice to help ease his suffering from various difficulties. Buddha responded by telling him to string 108 seeds and recite the three part refuge prayer upon them.

Origin

The word mala, also referred to as japa mala, is derived from the Indian Sanskrit phrase for garland. The English word rosary, the western term for prayer beads, owes it's etymology to Roman miscommunication. "When Roman explorers came into India and encountered the mala, they heard japa mala, and japa for the Romans meant 'rose,'' according to ReligionFacts.com. The word "rosary" eventually evolved from that translation as Romans carried the prayer bead concept back to the western world.

Last Saturday I discovered a wonderful little booth called "Jen's Crown Jewels" at the Hoggetowne Medieval Faire in Gainesville, FL. That morning I was feeling kind of down, having lost one of the sterling silver earring I had made for the faire. So my niece and I set out to find some sparkly things to put me in a better mood. Which is how we came to find Jen's booth. Her booth had many styles and colors of jewelry to choose from. She helped me find a pair of cuffs that matched my Lord of the Rings inspired dress perfectly! For the past few weeks I have considered getting an ear cuff just to try out since I have never worn them before. Now I have two gorgeous ones that are hand-made! Over the past few days I have realized that I enjoy wearing my ear cuffs more than traditional earrings. Unlike tradition earrings, the ear cuffs are NOT piercings so they do not cause the problems that wearing earrings do. For me wearing earrings has always been aggravating, since most earrings cause my ears to turn red and itchy. Usually I am only able to wear earrings for a few hours, but I can wear my ear cuffs all day comfortably, without any issues! I usually forget that I am wearing them.

Simplicity Cosmetics are lite weight, offer great coverage, and most importantly allow your skin to breathe. These qualities cause me to forget that I am wearing makeup. Light - Mineral Sheer Primer:

Simplicity Cosmetic's Mineral Sheer Primer is great for covering blemishes and redness. This is an important product as it is designed to minimize oil and help keep your makeup in place. When using the primer I have found this to be very true, as it helps my makeup to stay in place all day.

Truly Hypoallergenic:

Since my late teens I have been unable to wear cosmetics due to asthma and allergies to wheat, soy, gluten, eggs, carmine (a dye derived from insects), fish oils and certain dyes (the infamous red 40 & yellow 5). Go to any store that carries cosmetics, from Wal-Mart to Macy's, and you will find that all of these allergens are widely used in cosmetics (often under their chemical names). For those will allergies like mine an allergic reaction is not sneezing, but in fact can be life threatening. The allergic reactions I experience (and risk experiencing each time I hug family or friends who wear cosmetics or perfumes) ranges from severe itching and rashes to the more common reaction of asthma and swelling of the tongue and throat (which are very dangerous). For this reason I have to be extermly careful about the products I use and whom I come into contact with. Please Note: The purpose of stating my health issues is to show how amazing Simplicity Cosmetics truly are. Unlike other brands I can wear Simplicity Cosmetics with out any problems what so ever! Plus they are worry-free as I do not have to worry about my allergies, which for me is amazing.

Testing:
To test Simplicity Cosmetics for this review I applied a small amount to my skin and waited 15 minutes to see what would happen. To my surprise there was NO reaction. So to put Simplicity Cosmetics to the test, to ensure that it is truly safe for those with allergies, I decided to wait until morning when all of my allergy medicines had worn off (currently I take 5 medicines) and repeat the test. I did this to ensure that the products were in fact hypoallergenic. I tried applying the products to the inner area of my wrist first to see how my skin would reaction. I then waited a few minutes and I examined my skin carefully. The vegan products had no reaction at all. No itchiness or redness (and more importantly no asthma attacks). However, the non-vegan products were slightly itchy for me, but still no rashes or asthma attacks. I have talked with many women and found most people with sensitive skin can wear non-vegan products with out problems (I'm just one of the few who can't). Personally I feel more comfortable using vegan products anyway, but this is a personal choice. Having past the first test, I moved on to the next; applying the make-up.

Although it has been around 6 years since I last wore make-up, I could tell right away that Simplicity Cosmetics are very different from the products I used as a teen. The first aspects I noticed was that Simplicity Cosmetics go on smoothly and have nice coverage with out feeling heavy. Even with the primer on under my foundion the cosmetics did not feel as if they are suffocating my skin (as I remember even my Mary Key make up doing). I wore these with out any problems what-so-ever, which considering how badly makeup has reacted with my skin in the past is amazing.

My Personal Opinion:
Personally I love using Simplicity Cosmetics because of the quality of the cosmetics and the simplicity of ingredients found on each label. I love the crucifix attached to this rosary and its symbolism. Its so rare to see a crucifix that incorporates a star into its design (the star often symbolize the five wounds Christ suffered). I also admire Mrs. Mursin's choice of turquoise and tigers eye beads as they complement each other. The use of cap beads around the tiger's eye is a nice touch as well. The center of the rosary is a miraculous medal which adds to the beauty of this design.

My Thoughts About The Prayer Beads:

The turquoise cross attached to the prayer beads is simply breath taking. I love the design of the cross and the way it is surrounded by five lapis lazuli stones. The symbolism of this piece is beautiful as the five stones symbolize many things such as the five wounds of Christ, the five knightly virtues and to some the five elements. I love Mrs. Mursin's use of color, the turquoise and lapis lazuli complement each other very well. The center is a beautiful triple spiral. Once again, I love the symbolism as this design as it is often symbolic of the Holy Trinity. For this reason the triple spiral is one of my favorite symbols.

Are you looking for a charm that is uncommon, with an original design that expresses your passion for the unusual? I have found the charm you are searching for. Wither you are a closet geek or a full blown comic-con addict this charm is a wonderful way to express your passion. The fun design of this charm is modeled after the classic image of spaceships from vintage Science Fiction. Finely detailed designs adorn the rocket section of the spaceship. A star pattern is cut through the ship adding dimension to its unique design. This charm is whimsical and fun and adds a touch of Sci-Fi to any bracelet. The charm is crafted from genuine sterling silver with oxidized details. Underneath the charm is a small stamp which reads “925” indicating the charm's content of pure silver. The charm fits nicely onto my Pandora bracelet, and it also fits onto all of my Pandora-style bracelets. Unlike Pandora charms which have internal threads that twist onto the bracelet, this charm simply slips on to the bracelet with ease. The charm is close to the same weight as a Pandora charm when held in one's palm. This is an important aspect because charms that weigh more than Pandora's charms could possibly damage your Pandora bracelet. Keep this in mind when purchasing charms that are not crafted by Pandora. This charm passes all my tests and looks wonderful on my bracelet.

A few weeks ago I won this lovely pendent during the design a pendent contest held by Trudie Davies Designs. The pendent is crafted from sterling silver and features designs that are stamped by hand into the metal. My personal Opinion:

Trudie's pendent has become one of my favorites. This pendent looks well with both casual and formal outfits, and the inspirational message on the pendent is of personal significance. “Dare to Dream” is a statement that has many meanings for me. It inspires me to think outside of the box, to dream of who I truly want to be, and to become that person. It also encourages me to dream of a better world, one in which my dreams are a reality. And finally this simple statement reminds me of my Daddy's last piece of advise- don't be afraid to live outside the box, be eccentric, and live life to its fullest. He was truly a master of this, one of the qualities which made him so much fun to be around. Where others would find reasons to be discouraged in life, he would find reasons to enjoy life. There are always rays of light amongst the darkness. He saw the opportunity to uplift others, while at the same time working to change things for the better.

Review Time: The Illusionist Locket

The Illusionist Locket is an original design created by woodworking artist Jim Anderson. He found his inspiration for this design in the transforming locket featured in the film “The Illusionist”. Although the scene depicting the locket in the film is brief, it has inspired many to try their hand at creating a working replica. However the scene is somewhat misleading, as two separate lockets were used in the film to achieve the locket’s transformation. This did not discourage Jim Anderson, who after watching the film set out to create a functional illusionist locket for his wife. Several prototypes later, he did what Hollywood could not- create a functional illusionist locket that held not one but two photos. His line of Illusionist Lockets feature many improvements that Hollywood could not dream of, showing the originality and genus of his design.

The Locket's Components:

Each Illusionist Locket is hand-crafted from high quality materials and is built to withstand the tests of time. The components are custom made to ensure quality. Due to the time and skill involved in the making of the Illusionist Locket a brake down of its components is in order.

Transforming Butterfly:

The butterfly design on this locket transforms into a tulip when the locket is twisted from an oval shape into a heart (just like the locket featured in the film). These symbols were chosen not only for their beauty, but for their meaning as well. The butterfly is symbolic of true beauty, faithfulness, resurrection and transition. In Christianity it is also viewed as a symbol of rebirth. Tulips are symbolic of perfect love. And white tulips symbolize heaven, newness and purity. The inlays that form the designs are set into the wood of the locket, creating a design that will not wear off over time. Each inlay is custom made and is available in white acrylic, sterling silver, and solid 14k gold.

Lets Talk About Wood:

The locket featured in this review is crafted from cocobolo, an exotic wood that is imported from South America. Cocobolo is a heavy, dense wood that is very durable. It features rich tones and a lovely grain. As a woodworking artist Jim Anderson has a deep passion for the beauty and versatility that this wood offers. Each piece of wood chosen to create an Illusionist Locket is hand selected to ensure beauty and quality. His experience in woodworking leads him on the hunt for the most beautiful woods available. To ensure that the beauty of the wood will be preserved for many years wooden lockets are injected with a plastic polymer to stabilize the wood. The polymer gives the wood a smooth polished finish, that is very similar to glass and it makes the wood water resistant (personally I find these aspects very impressive). Illusionist Lockets are available in a variety of woods, and colorful acrylics. Lockets are available in three different sizes oval, slim and thin. The locket featured in this review is the thin style, Height :1.4" 35.5 mm Width: 0.7" 17.8 mm Thickness: 0.45" 11.4 mm Picture Diameter: 0.36" 9.1 mm

Bails:

The bail of this locket (the loop which allows the locket to hang from a necklace) is very sturdy and durable. Bails used in illusionist lockets are high quality with a thickness that will allow the pendent to last for many years without needing to be repaired. Each bail is custom made from sterling silver, 14kt yellow gold, or 14kt white gold. The price largely depends on the components from which the locket it is made. The locket featured in this review sells for $220 USD featuring a sterling silver bail and is the most popular choice. Lockets that feature all gold components are around $360 USD. Given the quality and uniqueness of illusionist lockets they are well worth the price.

How It Works:

Opening the illusionist locket is almost a magical experience, as the components flip themselves into the desired locations with ease. You maybe asking yourself “how is this possible?”. Although the locket's transformation seems mysterious, its functioning is due to a very complex and well constructed design. Ten tiny, yet power magnets work to repel or attract each other allowing the locket's components to flip into the desired locations. The locket also contains five locating balls which precisely align the pieces of the locket into place. When the locket is twisted the parts move into the various configurations smoothly and without catching (regardless of how many times the locket is opened). The internal picture frames within the locket are surrounded by decorative hand-crafted brass. Aside from the decorative purpose of the frames they also provide a rotation housing which privets the locket making its transformation possible.

My Personal Opinion:
Personally I feel that Illusionist Lockets are truly unique, as I have never seen any locket that draws my attention the way this locket has (I can't stop holding and twisting the locket, it is very additive!). The precession, craftsmanship and heirloom quality of the locket are superb. Every aspect of the locket down to the smallest detail is well designed, allowing the locket to function with ease. Illusionist Lockets are a wonderful way to keep your loved ones close, and preserve their memory for generations. They are also wonderful pieces of wearable art, as each one is unique.

At first glance the NIV Bible Clutch has the appearance of an elegant evening bag combined with the simplicity of black leather. This edition is bound in black Italian duo-tone, a soft artificial leather that is flexible and somewhat supple to the touch. Italian duo-tone is a quality artificial leather that is close in durability to bonded leather. The cover of this edition features feels more durable and supple then other artificial leathers I have encountered. What's Inside:

The text of this Bible is presented in double-column format and includes subject headings that divide each paragraph (aspects which I personally find to be very useful). This edition includes references to similar Bible verses presented within the text. Footnotes are located at the bottom of each page and are not distracting. The text size of this edition is 6pt, with the words of Christ in red. This size text is small for some readers making it difficult for them to read. The paper this edition is printed on is thin paper and has a semi-transparent quality. The use of highlighters is not recommend in this Bible. For those who enjoy highlighting passages crayola color pencils are recommend (through personal experience I have found that they highlight very well on thin paper).

My Personal Opinion:

Personally I find this edition to be very practical and useful. Unlike other compact Bibles this edition is designed to multitask, featuring internal pockets that are similar to those found in a wallet. I was more than a little surprised to find these pockets next to the front pages (though this is a good surprise). The pockets are designed to easily fit an I.D, credit cards, or money, with a total of seven pocket for these items. I have never seen a Bible that combines multiple uses for both church and everyday use the way the NIV Bible Clutch does. This is a very interesting edition.

Inside compartment that can hold up to six I.D size cards, behind which is a 7^th compartment that is large enough to hold paper, prayer cards or money.
Cover: The cover has a soft feel that is reminiscent of leather.

Cons:

Text size: The text is somewhat difficult to read for an extend period of time.
Clasps: The clasps that attach the strap to the Bible seem fragile, and rather small.

If you are searching for a practical Bible that is the perfect size to fit into your purse – or better yet carry instead of your purse- then I highly recommend considering this edition.

Unlike other knitting books 400 Knitting Stitches focuses on stitch patterns, rather than project patterns. This format helps you to learn new stitches, practice them, and apply them to your own project patterns. I highly recommend this edition for those who enjoy new stitch patterns as this is the best resource I have encountered.
