Target Will Not Sell Beyoncé's New Album:

While it’s ridiculous for a company physically distributing music to try to blackball artists releasing music digitally first when they have no leverage from whence to oppose what’s long been the industry standard format (can you spell M-P-3?), I can’t h8 too hard on them: they actually sell vinyl!

The Problem with Mumford & Sons (or, Congrats, Banjo, You Made It):

…young people hearing Mumford & Sons for the first time hear it as exciting music that somehow didn’t require a drum set, vocoder, or Jay-Z production. This is mind-blowing to them. Add to that the fact that they didn’t have to search for it; it’s available on Top 40 radio, and the thrill of something different doesn’t initially come across as alien because it was handed over. Easy. New thing to like! Sort of like falafels…you can get one on any corner.

here are two duos that make me wish i had a sister i could harmonize with. there’s something special about great harmonies, and i believe it takes more than technical skill to get a great blend; it’s an almost alchemical matter of artistic chemistry. who instantly comes to mind are the beach boys, the everly brothers, simon & garfunkel, the beatles, gram parsons & emmylou harris. while these two groups don’t have the songs of these legends, they do have the chemistry.

the belle brigade - ethan (22) & barbara (29) gruska

they have one self-titled album which came out last year. their sound is kinda contemporary alt-country-folk-pop. on their best song, “losers”, it’s kinda a cross between damien rice and chris carrabba. but with crazy harmonies. i think from that description, you’ll either hate or it or love it.

first aid kit - johanna (21) & klara (19) söderberg

this fleet foxes-y swedish sister duo’s early claim to fame was a youtube cover of a fleet foxes song. they have two albums; the first, 2010’s decidedly low-budget “the big black & the blue” came out on the knife’s swedish label, rabid records, and is generally pleasant with the one standout “ghost town” overshadowing its cheesy keyboard patches. bright eyes’ mike mogis helms production duties for this year’s “the lion’s roar” (and conor himself co-writes and co-sings the last track), an interesting alt-country/americana outing. the key cut on this one is “emmylou”, which opens with the sisters söderberg lamenting the bitter winds of stockholm and invites in the chorus:

i’ll be your emmylou and i’ll be your june
if you’ll be my gram and my johnny too
no, i’m not asking much of you
just sing little darling, sing with me.

it’s the heart and key to the rest of the album, where our two young swedish heroines find themselves, like fish out of water, working with two monsters of folk. of all the love songs, none are as affecting as this one for those great voices.

new addition to my vinyl collection: bob dylan’s “john wesley harding”. dylan’s first post-motorcycle crash album was released during the height of flower power at the end of 1967, and yet finds him moving against the times towards a sparse rustic folk and country sound. it’s also notable for the significant biblical allusions littered throughout.
