WHat!! Are you kidding!? Use the Bible!? You are absolutely correct, Darryl. I too am afraid that the Leader guide, book, or even dvd is a substitute for proper, personal, time with the living God. Using a 'quarterly' does give us a systematic way to study the Bible, plus, they can give new insight, but the Bible IS the text. In fact, in Brad Waggoner's book, The Shape of Faith to Come, he reveals that the latest studies show that daily Bible reading was the #1 factor of spiritual growth/formation. Interestingly, it did not specify quantity or quality, but daily reading. In other words, the daily connection to the Bible intake how little that may be, sets one on the right path.

For examples of our lesson notes and workers meeting audio check out: { Link }

We spend 15 minutes discussing some facet of SS work, then discuss the lesson. My lessons are based on Lifeway ETB scope and sequence, however, I write my own outlines and notes on the passages. Also I sprinkle discussion questions at the end of each Principle. I end with implications and applications. My outline is faily obvious in the notes, but here it is roughly:

Intro:

I. Get Attention- icebreaker, question, story, etc.

II. Transition- to the point of the day (make sure attention getter links seemlessly to point.

III. Context- Discuss important information from before or after passage, give flow of thought in writers argument, summarize situation.

Aim/Point/Principles:

Bible Point- What the author intended to say to his own audience= Past tense.

Today's Point- Bible point transformed to our present audience= Present Tense

Aim- What do I want to do to my students in this lesson. Cognitive- think differently; Affective- feel differently; Behavioral- Do differently.

I. Principle 1: What does this section of our passage cause us to be/do/feel/think as it relates to today's point.

II. Principle 2: Same

III. Principle 3: Same

Implications/Applications:

Implications: What impact should the text have on OUR lives (Case studies are great here). General

Applications: What impact should the text have on MY life. Specific. (Questions, Steps) Answer WHAT and HOW.

Conclusion:

Wrap up the lesson in 3-5 sentences- tie in the introduction and repeat main points/principles.

Call for a commitment to some application, follow up next week to see how many did it.

I was moved by this novel idea! It seems to me that if we enroll those not in SS, we are taking a step in faith and expecting God to respond. I think we will see some results, but they will be His, not ours!

I have asked that we spend a Wednesday eveing prayer time very soon dedicated to walking into each classroom (we have some new classrooms about to be occupied)and asking someone present to pray that God will use this classroom, the teachers and class members in powerful ways to contact those outside the church and encourage them to seek Jesus.

I also feel that the decline in SS can be turned around through regular and corporate prayer. We should be asking the whole church to be in prayer for SS and evangelism.
