What to do with your PS3 – After you bought it

I don’t know what it is that makes me get my hands on new and old gadgets. I have been planning to buy a PS3 for long and finally I got it. Thank you Papa. It wouldn’t have been possible without your support I bought 250 GB GOW III edition. People say its a great game well that I would have to wait and see. I am still exploring it.

I am new to gaming consoles, this is my first ever console. Alright, second; first was little master 8bit. Not into gaming much. Just bought it out of curiosity. I like to buy things which are immensely popular and are of great quality. Heard so much about PS3 and I just wanted to own one and then play ! And I also wanted to use it for media center sort of device.

So the thing is, I have a fair bit of idea about the PS3 world but never been able to do anything practical as I did not have the console. Now since I have it I am really not sure what all cool things I can do with it. So I went searching on internet. And you know its a big world out there on internet you don’t get to see everything in one day but whatever I could gather I am sharing with you guys. I will keep this post updated as soon as I get to know anything new. I am putting the pieces together because I could not find anything about it. God, my bad Google skills.

Here we go :

We all know the multimedia capability of PS3. Its the first ever consumer affordable blue-ray player in the market and still the heart-throb of many. So you would wanna play movies over the network or from the USB hard drive. To play movies over the network from your PC you would need to setup a media server. Usually this is done via Windows Media Player but people had hard time with it and did not achieve what they were really looking for. Then came TVersity and PS3 Media Center. Trust me you guys, PS3 Media Server is the best of breed Media Server for PS3. Easy to install and setup. No hassles at all. Its recommended that you use PS3 media server with Ethernet connection to stream movies on your PS3. Normal SD movies may work fine over wifi but full HD won’t. I tried, trust me. With PS3MS you not only can stream Movies but also Music and Music Videos.
Run Folding @ Home and server humanity.
Add themes and Wallpapers to your PS3 and appreciate the look.
You might be wondering why the hell PS Store and PS Home ain’t working. Its a genuine PS3, right ! I know what you did, but don’t worry I also made the same mistake. Actually You need to have a PSN ID (US or UK) to access PS Store & PS Home. You can create one on your PC or from your PS3. (BTW if you have already created an Indian PSN ID, then don’t worry. Just delete the existing user and create another one and login with the one you created from US/UK websites. PS Store or PS home as service is not available for Indian PSN id’s however online play works.)
Rip Music to PS3 HDD.
Get a Blu-Ray Remote to play movies via Blu-Ray Player.
I haven’t tried it but I have heard PS3 supports USB mouse and keyboard. You can utilize the mouse and keyboard for browsing.
Share your PSN games with your friends. You can share your paid for downloads with your friends legally.
And last but not the least use your PS3 as room heater in winters

You might have Googled it a lot and found nothing. Am I right ? Yeah hope so. OK, here is the deal. I ordered Hershey’s KISSES chocolates in India and got them delivered in Delhi. I don’t know people are so mad about Hershey’s Chocolates in India. But now you can get them anywhere in India anytime you want.

The website which offers such service is http://www.us2ap.com There are multiple child websites like us2delhi, us2guntur, us2bangalore etc. But the parent site is us2ap and you might notice all these child websites link to the parent website and one does not even come to know because they are all exactly the same.

Anyways, feedback time. It took me about 10 days to get my chocolates delivered. So if you are dying of Hershey’s Chocolate and can’t get the Hershey’s kisses in india anywhere, don’t worry you can get them here. Customer service is OK. Don’t expect much. All I want to say is expect worse customer service but your Hershey’s chocolate will be delivered for sure. Don’t worry.

Windows Can not initialize Disk Error Solution

I am not sure whether it will help you with your problem or not but it did solve my problem. I had an 80GB laptop sata hard drive which I was trying to use on a Windows 7 PC but it kept giving me error “Windows can not initialize the hard drive“. Then after searching here and there I realized that the hard drive had password when it was connected to laptop. I removed the password from BIOS and voila. It worked.

So, all I did was remove the HDD password. If you encounter anything like that just try and remove any password from the HDD and it should work.

Animated Digital Tapestry an amazing piece of art and technology at Shanghai Expo

A Chinese company called Crystal CG has recreated panoramic painting Qīngmíng Shànghé Tú (Along the River During the Qingming Festival) which is displayed at the Shanghai Expo 2010. They have actually created a digital version of this painting which measures 130 meter long and 6.3 high, 3o times the scale compared to original painting.

The 5.28-meter-long original captures the daily life of people during the Northern Song period (AD 960-1127) in the then capital, Bianjing, today’s Kaifeng. The entire piece was painted in hand scroll format and the content reveals the lifestyle of all levels of the society from rich to poor, as well as different economic activities in rural areas and the city. Painted on light-colored silk measuring 24.8cm x 528.7cm and bearing Emperor Huizong’s signature it depicts 814 humans, 28 boats, 60 animals, 30 buildings, 20 vehicles, nine sedan chairs and 170 trees. The painting is famous because of its geometrically accurate images of boats, bridges, shops, and scenery. Because of its fame, it has been called “China’s Mona Lisa”.

To create the electronic version, Crystal CG borrowed the original from the Palace Museum in the Forbidden City and kept it for three months – under tight security mind you. From inception to completion it took the Crystal CG team almost two years to complete and when they were done they created a dynamic version that was 30 times the size of the original. It also had more elements than the original because, unlike the painting, which displays a only a daylight scene, the digital version alternates from day to night and back again every four minutes – two minutes for the day view and two minutes for night view. Enlarging the painting so much also meant that the team had to inject much more detail to the already detailed scene.

During the daylight scene, 691 characters go about their business. They are so detailed their facial expressions can be seen changing as a team of camels walks slowly by, or as they go about the task of taking down the masts of their vessel as they sail along the river. Then at night, lanterns and candles come alight for the 377 characters visible in the nighttime scene. As an example of the attention to detail, the creative team used more than 10 kinds of lanterns because historical records show that they varied in size and shape according to where they were hung – be it the gates of homes, government offices, stores or other places. Still, Crystal CG went to great lengths to stay true to the original work and more than 60 percent of their display is identical to the original.

Process

The first step in creating the display involved removing all the characters and concentrating on the background. Buildings, pavilions, terraces, rivers, fields and trees were laid down first to which details such as swaying trees and crops and the flowing river were added. The team then moved onto designing and animating the characters in 3D, before adding color and converting them back to 2D. Finally, the 2D characters were mixed with the background. The animation was then ready for the Chinese Pavilion where 12 projectors running simultaneously provide visitors with the stunning finished product.

Established in 1995 in Beijing, Crystal CG grew quickly as a provider of digital image services for the real estate industry. The success of its digital tapestries has prompted Crystal CG to focus on the culture industry with plans to interpret more classical paintings and calligraphy through multimedia. The company has also been named as an official service provider for the London Games and will provide digital animations for the opening closing ceremonies of the Olympic and Paralympic games in 2012. Additionally, the company will do 3D visualizations of all 36 London venues as well as non-competition venues including the Olympic Village and the International Broadcast Center. It will definitely be interesting to see what they come up with.

With the news that a Groundswell production is working on a movie about Google, based on the book, “Googled: The End of the World As We Know It,” by Ken Auletta. Its eminent that people start speculating about the casting of the movie.

“The heart of the movie is their wonderful edict, don’t be evil. … The intention is to be sympathetic to Sergey and Larry, and hopefully the film will be as interesting as the company they created,” London was quoted as saying. It’s hard to believe a heart-warming tale of pluck and smarts is going to be as interesting as the cold story of sex and corporate intrigue promised by “The Social Network,” the Facebook origin story.

CNET’s choice for casting is

SERGEY BRIN: Zach Braff. The right personality, but can he rollerblade or pull off Vibram shoes?

LARRY PAGE: Zachary Quinto. Not only would this choice result in the first movie ever (maybe) to star two Zachs, it’s highly logical.

ERIC SCHMIDT: Philip Seymour Hoffman. Composed, articulate, and just a little edgy.

On the eve of Indian Independence Day let me treat you all with some reality and truth of our free India. Actually it is in form of a movie review. I went to see Peepli Live today. And OMG its such a pathetic movie. Well, if you’ve watched it then you must be having different opinion than me. Why ? Because it shows exactly what happens in India. I can bet you guys that this movie is not going to be on theaters for long. Now you must be thinking why am I thinking like that. Its because this movie uncovers our media’s reality. It show what exactly our pathetic news channels are in reality.. So if the these channels don’t show anything about this movie then how would this movie run. It won’t because the news channels don’t want to show their embarrassment on their own channels.

My God, can’t express my feeling while writing this post. I feel like killing all the channels and remove them from the entire universe. Don’t they bloody watch the DD News. Is that not a news channel or they show something from the other world.

Thanks Amir, once again for a good message. But for its helpful when people act up on that. I think our government should take some lessons from China on “how to control media in the country”

Do you also feel the same way as I do. I mean do you not feel a bit relaxed after writing that post. I get a sense of accomplishment every time and I am sure you do too. But remember that when you’re done writing a new blog post, you still have some work to do. There are many things you should be doing after writing a new post and I will try and explain a few of the most important things you should do after every blog post you write.

Edit Your Post

Well, I do it all the time and still end up with some minor typos. Why I am saying you should always edit your post is because I don’t know about other people but I like to write my posts in one go. I am not that blogger who sits back and writes one post in 1 month. So most of the time I write my posts in 10 to 15 minutes max. Don’t publish your post until it has been completely edited and checked for spelling/grammar errors. Read over it carefully and make sure everything flows and that everything is written correctly. Like I said, It doesn’t have to be perfect but you don’t want it to be full of errors either. You also want to make sure all your spelling and punctuation is correct. One good way to do this is to paste it into MS Word and run a spell check. Like I am doing it right now

Share the Post

In the recent past a lot of Social boom has happened so everyone is jumping in the wagon. Therefore the next thing you want to do after you write a blog post is to share your post with as many people as you can. There are a lot of social bookmarking websites on the internet that you can use to do this. Some of the best and most popular are Stumbleupon, Digg, Delicious, Mixx, and Reddit. Make sure you bookmark your post to at least a few of them.

Tweet It

Twitter has really picked up the speed in social networking in the last year or so. Its like the small version of big posts. Sometimes people want to elaborate on their thinking and sometimes they just post a shorter version of that. Any which ways twitter is hot nowadays. So after you write a new blog post you should always “tweet” it. Twitter is really popular right now and it only takes a few seconds to tweet your followers about your post. This can give you extra traffic and maybe even a few people will retweet it or link to your post, which will help even more. So make sure you take a little time to tweet about your post whenever you publish a new one.

Alright, that should be enough to get you started. Just remember that after you finish writing a blog post you aren’t done with the work. If you do the things listed above then you will have a much better shot at building a successful blog.

This in my views is one of the most effective way ot getting traffic to your blog or site. As soon as you write a post, start going to your favorite blogs and comment with url of the new post that you written. Give the Name accordingly. Some Blog admins don’t mind accepting your name as your blog name if the comment adds something to the conversation.

Use WordPress.com Blog as your Image Host

I recently got this idea and implemented it on this blog. I always run out of bandwidth if I use lot of pictures in my post. I like to add pictures in my post but as you might have noticed for the past few months I am not using much images while writing post. So I came up with a solution for that. I had some blogs setup on WordPress and I was not using them very frequently. So I basically used the WordPress blog to host my images. Its very easy to start a blog of your own with having to have hosting or any technical knowledge.

In a nutshell, the idea is that you create a new Blog on WordPress. Upload new media on wordpress and then hotlink those images back to your own blog. See recent posts on this blog. All the images are either hotlinked from original source or they are all uploaded on WordPress blog.

So, What are the benefits ? Well the benefits that you get by hosting your images on WordPress blog are :

Unlimited Bandwidth so no need to panic while posting those big images post.
You get a control panel of your own to manage your images
Can be used for any purpose i.e. with any file type that is supported on WordPress.com
You get 3GB space to be used.
And I heard Google likes if you link something to other reputed websites, I mean its good for SEO purpose.
Your images never ever get expired.
Saves you from embarrassment.

This configuration broke the world record of calculating Pi upto 5 trillion digits.

Yesterday, Alexander Yee and Shigeru Kondo announced that they had set a new Pi world record, calculating it to five trillion digits—some 22TB of data—using a single custom built computer.

Kondo, a Japanese engineer, built the $18,000 machine, and Yee, an American computer science student, supplied the software: y-cruncher, a multi-threaded Pi program. The computation took 90 days in all. But beyond setting the world record, what Yee and Kondo really wanted was to push the very limits of personal computing. Or, as they put it, to see “how much hardware can we cram into one machine and still make it faster?”

Its rumors time, New iPods in 2010, iPad Nano and iPhone 5 in 2011

Well, Its again the time in the year that everyone starts speculating the new products to be launched by Apple. Its been an Apple ritual to keep it secret. And they have tried to follow it religiously to best of their possible effort but in vain all the time so far. So somehow from somewhere people seem to be getting information about their new launches and leaks the information in the open.

New iPods. It seems that Apple has three new iPods ready to go as early as this month, or as late as September. First is the new iPod nano, Second is the new iPod touch, and the third one is unknown, but can be a small (1.7”) touchscreen replacement for the iPod shuffle. There’s also continued chatter about a three-inch touchscreen that could make its way into an iPod, shaving half an inch off the diagonal of the current iPod touch.

New iPad. An all new 7” version of the iPad is considerably complete and will be ready for shipping either later this year or early in 2011. Apple has been prototyping devices with screens of this size for a long time—quite possibly predating the original iPhone.

New iPhone. Rumors are that iPhone is meeting Verizon next year and Apple is pushing up the release date of the 5^th generation iPhone to early 2011. Its planned to be released in the CES 2011. Also because of the antenna issues with the iPhone 4. It’s mysterious whether this will be a repackaging of iPhone 4 gears in a different shell or something more significant.

My take on these rumors would be :

New better fast iPod, iPhone and iPad. Yes, I believe power is the key to all Apple products so would definitely be seeing more power put into each and every device.

Higher capacity. I think apple already made a mistake by not introducing iPhone 4 with 64 GB since the device is capable of handling HD video recording. Since iPhone 4 can record HD video its emminent that people would want to do away with their Flip HD or some other HD recorder. Therefore they need more storage, at least 64 GB. Don’t be surprised to see 128GB iPhone next year.

Camera Upgrade. The iPhone 4 camera is by far the best compared to all other phones. And it beats other phones hands down in terms of quality of the pictures.

More colors : Yes, I believe iPhone Pro (yes, please call it pro steve) will be available in many colors.

Illuminating Apple Logo : We understand apple that it drains the battery quickly. But since apple products are to flaunt then why not let people decide what to do with the apple logo at the back of the phone. Its just a mere LED. It ain’t gonna suck the life out of the battery of iPhone when it boasts a whopping 5-6 hours of talk time. And we are not talking about leaving it on in the day light. Use those sensors and make it available at the night only even if I have it on.

Interested, isn’t it ? Can you believe the Organizing Committee hired cross trainers at Rs 8.8 lakh a piece, chairs at Rs 8,378 each and 100 litre refrigerators at Rs 42,202 each. That’s bloody 200% the actual price of the item. And they are hiring these items at 200% the cost of the item. Even umbrellas were hired for Rs 6,308 per piece. Whether it be Congress or any other party in the ruling, the story will be the same, as this CWG is a source to mint money for all the corrupt bureaucrats and associates. Somehow I feel, India never deserve to host this kind of International Game event , not for another 50 years .

First the British looted and looted our country to the fullest. Now the Politicians are looting our country every day, every second. When will these sick people be brought to Justice. If it were to be any other country all these people would have been arrested by now. Now these people are boldly saying what is going on is right.

Government at the center is busy in getting ready to loot the visitors as well. Don’t believe me, look at the past annoucncements made.

I mean what a foreigner visiting India need after coming to India. Transport and Food. But if you as government in spite of subsidizing the price of normal commodity increase it. Then its called loot in the open. Government needs to realize that people coming to India are not coming to watch the games. They are coming here to have fun. And in all this mess we localites are getting penalized.

I don’t have much to say but I think since our politicians and these people in Organizing Committee are illiterate I guess they have literally taken the word Commonwealth Games to be “Common Wealth“, as in Common. So everyone wants to have his/her share of the wealth.

Tech Arena - To be very frank and true, I don’t have any idea about this forum as I never visited this one. I found this forum had a Buy/Sell category and a considerable amount of post in that section so I thought it would be good to share the link with you. No harm in sharing anything. right !

India Broadband Forum - Oh.. Indian Broadband Forum started with the Broadband scene in India but then gradually picked up many other topics and now is a full fledged tech forum with variety of topics. I am a regular visitor to this forum from the last 4-5 years at least. I registered here when I used to use Sify Broadband. Yeah ! those were the best days of my life. that dc++ hub. I still miss it.. Anyways, again never went to the buy/sell section on this forum, but since the traffic to this forum is huge so I am expecting people do trade here.

Mostly you would find people selling their stuff in multiple forums i.e. they are registered on all of the forums.

Important : Please read the rules of the respective forums as they all operate on their own rules and regulations. You don’t wanna get burnt as soon as you start.

How to repair a bad Mouse Button

I recently purchased an old HP wireless Desktop (Mouse and Keyboard) through a forum. When I got it, it was not working properly. No offense to the seller but I should have really checked the product when I received it. But I did not. Only the left click worked fine but the right click was giving me hard time. I crack opened the Mouse and tried to clean the button with thinner but still the same problem.

And today again when I used the mouse it did not work at all. So I decided to open it up and see what exactly I could do with the button. I had some idea about opening a USB Six Axis Controller and repairing it. The Game Controller also works the same way. The buttons in there are almost identical to the buttons present in the now days mouses. But I was not sure how to open them. Now I had to decide whether to break it or make it. I opened up the mouse and the buttons as well some how. I will try and explain how to open the buttons via images.

What you are looking at in the picture below is the button which is open. Sorry for the bad images but I guess you would get an idea if you try and open up this thing. The button would have 4 small dots at the top. I could not a picture of the same as I did not have a proper camera.

You would need a small screwdriver or some sharp pin to open up the button. Once you open it there would be four pieces inside it. See picture below for more details.

We are only concerned about the metal plate which actually makes your button not work. You would need to clean this metal plate and then put things back on as they were initially.

In case you lose order, or somehow forget what was first and last. Let me give you the order.

Top the plastic with 4 holes.
Then a plastic button which actually connects to the mouse button from outside.
Then there would be a small rubber button.
Then the metal at the bottom.

I know its not exactly a tutorial but I guess this would help you. I may update this post later on when I get a good camera or may add a video.

Indian Currency gets an Identity

India unveiled on Thursday what it hopes to be a globally recognized sign for its currency, just like the dollar and its symbol $. The rupee is currently referred to by abbreviations like Rs, Re or INR. The new symbol was created by a post-graduate student of Indian Institute of Technology,Uday Kumar. He beat 3000 other entries to win the cash prize of 250,000 rupees ($7,388).

The symbol is an amalgam of the Indian Devanagari script Ra and the Roman capital letter R without the stem. There are now plans to have the new symbol introduced on computer keyboards shortly and is expected to be in international use in about two years’ time.

iPhone 2G does not require any jailbreak or unlock

I recently bought an iPhone 2G. It was already unlocked and jailbroken so I did not have to do anything. But me being nerd was trying to get latest iOS 4 to work on 2G. Well to my surprise iOS 4 worked with 2G but performance was not that great so I decided to install the original firmware and then jailbreak if required. And beleive me everything worked fine the firmware version 3.1.3 and I am using the phone without any unlock or jailbreak. I think apple has decided to free these old souls i.e. iPhone 2Gs

How to use Hiren BootDisk Ghost with Switches on Command Prompt

Last night it look me over 3 hours to understand the problem why Norton Ghost was acting weird. I was not able to clone my laptop hard drive with an existing image. The image was correct and consistent however Norton Ghost while restoring kept giving me some inconsistency errors. Image was created with a 160 GB partition and I was restoring it on 320 GB drive. I tried both ways to restore. Image to Drive and Image to Disk. But every time it gave me inconsistency errors.

Finally after some research I found out the solution for the problem. There are various switches that you can use on command line Ghost. I had to use -ntc- switch. This switch basically Disables NTFS contiguous run allocation which makes the image to be restored on any hard drive with any size of drive. But unfortunately when you use Hiren Bootcd you can not run Ghost with any switch.

But suddenly all my problems were solved. Actually what happens is whenever you run any program from the menu it first gets extracted and then gets saved in the RAM drive created by the CD. That’s it. That was the solution.

To run Ghost or any other program from Hiren Bootcd with switches follow the steps below:

Boot with Hiren BootCD.
Run a program of your choice. I was using Ghost so I will continue with Ghost with the example.
Once Ghost is up and running Exit it without doing anything.
It will take you back to the Command Prompt.
Now use Ghost.exe -ntc-
That’s it. Similarily you can use any program with their compatible switches. All you need to do is run it first and then exit it.

Pretty Simple huh !!
