The renewed agreement builds on a successful collaboration established in 2017 and reflects a shared commitment to delivering consistent, high-quality rugby across the region. The three-year agreement will see all Scotland national teams – including senior men and women, A, junior pathways, students, wheelchair, PDRL, and the Origin Fixture – train and play with Rhino balls. In addition, Rhino will hold the naming rights to the Men’s Premiership, which will now be known as the Rhino Sponsored Men’s Premiership.

Rhino already has a proven track record in rugby league, having served as the official ball supplier for the Betfred Super League for six years, and having signed a three-year match ball partnership with Wales Rugby League in 2024.

As part of the deal, Rhino match balls will become the exclusive ball used across all eligible National Leagues and Scottish Cups. The platform, launched on Rugby Education and YouTube was launched today, Wednesday 17^th September, with 14 videos going live on YouTube covering topics ranging from ball presentation and jackal technique to building scrums and lifting and jumping in the lineout.

Rhino, who have been the official training partner of The British & Irish Lions for five tours including the current one in Australia, will be supporting schools, clubs and rugby communities across the world – covering all levels of the sport – with training equipment. 

Already, the Lions have donated equipment used by the tourists to prepare for the Test against Argentina to UCD, the Dublin-based side that helped nurture the careers of Garry Ringrose, James Ryan, Andrew Porter and Josh van der Flier.

DynamiCore Technology minimises energy loss, maximising kick length and accuracy.

How does it work? The outer layer of the Vortex Pro is a rubber composite, also known as plied rubber, which combines the properties of rubber with other reinforcing materials to make it stronger, more flexible and more durable. The Vortex Pro’s rubber composite is made in a formula which is designed to convert maximum potential energy to kinetic energy with the least amount of energy lost in transition. This means that the Vortex Pro is designed to make kicking as energy-efficient as possible, as it absorbs the shock of the kicker striking the ball and offers a longer flight time.

AeroTec Bladder Technology balances weight to maintain a true flight axis.

How does it work? A rugby ball needs to have the best technology in the valve to ensure maximum performance, but this can lead to imbalance in weight with the valve-side of the ball weighing more than the non-valve side. To ensure the ball is perfectly balanced for the most accurate flight during every kick and pass – keeping on its true axis – Rhino has increased the thickness of the non-valve side of the ball. This ensures that the rotation of the ball in flight is consistent, meaning it will not wobble in the air. 

Multiple layers of rubber-coated polyester and cotton for comfort and energy transfer.

How does it work? The outer layer of the Vortex Pro is made of the rubber composite where the DynamiCore Technology is in use, where the rubber is specially designed to absorb the shock of when the kicker strikes the ball. Below this outer layer, there are multiple layers of cotton and polyester which themselves are sandwiched between two thin layers of elastic rubber. This makes the ball softer to handle and kick, while reinforcing the strength needed in the ball for the DynamiCore technology to work. 

Airlock bladder for exceptional air retention and consistent play.

How does it work? When balls lose air, they lose shape, even the slightest loss at elite-level, can be the difference between making or missing a kick, and Rhino has gone to every effort to minimise air-loss. Not only is there a flexible, circular airlock panel inside of the ball, but a tight rubber inner-valve, with reinforced ring surrounding it, ensures the bladder stays air tight. The airlock itself also has been increased in size so that air has even less chance of escaping the ball.

Hand-stitched with micro-waxed 9-ply thread, for durability and professional-level performance.

How does it work? Every Vortex Pro ball has been hand-stitched with micro-waxed 9-ply thread to massively enhance durability. Wax threading is different from normal threading as it not only adds strength, but increases resistance to moisture. This means that even when played on wet, muddy pitches, the professional quality of the Vortex Pro will not be infringed upon. Also, 9-ply thread is very thick, meaning the stitching is less visible and the threads are less likely to pierce the outer rubber layer when the ball is in use, helping the Vortex Pro’s aesthetic and strength respectively.

Pre-kicked to guarantee performance.

How does it work? A brand-new rugby ball takes around 30 kicks to reach its final shape, so until then there might be slight inconsistencies in the ball’s shape which make it more difficult to handle and kick. To mitigate this, Rhino has ensured that once every Vortex Pro ball has been hand stitched, the stitcher will hit the ball around 60 times with a hammer so that the ball reaches its final shape immediately. The hammers are covered with a cushioned cloth so that the quality or cosmetics of the ball are not compromised.

How long have Rhino made rugby balls?
Rhino’s heritage in rugby balls dates back more than two decades, starting initially at grassroots rugby in the UK, before starting a development process that resulted in the creation of elite-level balls that have been used by 80 of the world’s rugby playing nations.

Which teams have used Rhino balls?
Rhino rugby balls first appeared on the elite stage with the 2009 British & Irish Lions, as a training ball [a role it also facilitated in 2013 and 2017], then making its professional rugby debut as a match ball in league with the European Super League and Challenge Cup in 2012. In 2016, Rhino became the official rugby ball of Rugby Europe representing 47 nations, and Asia Rugby, covering 37 nations. This covered both fifteens and sevens, and Rhino was also used at the Oktoberfest Sevens in Munich, an international event that saw the All Blacks, Fiji and England among the sides to play with a Rhino match ball.

In 2020, Rhino also became the official match ball of Major League Rugby, in USA and Canada. Rhino has been the official match ball of the historic Varsity Matches between Oxford and Cambridge universities since 2017.

Rhino currently provides match balls for the majority of the BUCs Super League teams, including Loughborough, Hartpury, Exeter, Durham and Cardiff, and is also official training ball partner of Leinster and Connacht.

2017
Rhino become official match ball of Asia Rugby, delivering match balls for 37 nations to be used across both sevens and matches competitions. Rhino is also used once again as training ball for The British & Irish Lions. In the same year, Rhino also debuted as the official match ball for the historic Varsity Match between the universities of Cambridge and Oxford.

2019
Global Rapid Rugby a pioneering competition covering Asia and Australasia – with sides based in Australia, Fiji, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Samoa – choose Rhino as official match ball supplier.

2020
Rhino is chosen as the official match ball of Major League Rugby, the professional club rugby championship in North America.

2024
Rhino Vortex Pro, the highest-spec match ball ever created by Rhino, is produced and tested by the top sides in the BUCs Super Rugby, including the most recent champions, Loughborough University and University of Exeter, and the most successful side in the competition, Hartpury University. In the US, Rhino continue to grow, signing an extension of their partnership with BC School Sports to promote the game across high schools in British Columbia.

2025
Rhino signs seven-year partnership with SA Rugby and the Springboks, the four-time men’s Rugby World Cup champions and No.1-ranked side in the world. The deal covers the men’s and women’s fifteens and sevens sides, together with the Carling Currie Cup and all SA Rugby-run competitions.

The deal will see Rhino’s elite-level match balls used for all of the Springbok men’s and women’s home internationals, as well as all SA Rugby-run competitions, including the Carling Currie Cup, one of the world’s most historic rugby tournaments.

Rhino are one of the biggest names in rugby, having supported The British & Irish Lions for the past four tours with contact and training equipment, three of which also saw them provide training balls.

In recent years, Rhino has established itself as one of the leading brands in match balls, as the official match ball of Asia Rugby and Rugby Europe, accounting for over 80 rugby playing nations. Rhino balls have also been used at the highest level in club rugby across the world, previously being official match ball for the Pro12 (now Vodacom URC), Major League Rugby in the USA, and Superliga Americana de Rugby in South America.

The Rhino Vortex Pro is Rhino’s highest-spec rugby ball, and will be used by the Springboks for home games in next year’s Castle Lager Rugby Championship. Tested by clubs and universities, including at such famed British rugby institutions as Loughborough University, Hartpury University and University of Exeter, it was launched in 2024.

The partnership will see Rhino provide the Lions team with a full range of technical training equipment, including scrum machines and contact and skill products. In addition, it will also supply the pitch kits for both Lions and Wallabies training sessions and for the Test Series. These kits include post pads, corner pole pads and flags, and moon flags.

As part of the agreement, most of the training equipment used by the Lions and the Wallabies will be donated to local schools and rugby clubs in the UK, Ireland, and in Australia.

The British & Irish Lions will begin Tour preparations in Dublin playing a historic match against Argentina at Aviva Stadium on Friday 20 June before departing for Australia. The first Test of this highly anticipated Tour to Australia will begin on Saturday 19 July at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium. The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) will host the second Test on Saturday 26 July. The final Test will be played in front of over 80,000 fans at Sydney’s Accor Stadium in Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday 2 August.

Richmond Rugby have become the latest club to sign a match ball partnership with Rhino, covering both the men’s and women’s teams.

The international-standard Rhino Vortex Pro match ball will now be used for fixtures in National 1 for the men, and the Women’s Championship South as Rhino continues its growth across all levels of the game.

University of Exeter, one of the dominant forces in BUCS Super Rugby league, champions in two of the past three season, have signed a match ball partnership with Rhino.

 In seven seasons of BUCS Super Rugby, Exeter have finished in either first or second league position, reaching the final four times, winning the title in 2022 and 2023.  They’re joining an ever-growing group of elite sporting bodies now choosing Rhino’s highest-spec match ball, the Rhino Vortex Pro. The deal covers all University of Exeter rugby sides, including the teams competing in the BUCS Super League and National 2. In addition, they’ll also be training with the rugby specialist’s world-leading range of contact equipment.

National League 1 side Darlington Mowden Park sign partnership with world’s no.1 rugby equipment supplier Rhino.

Entering the 2024/25 season on the back of a promising league campaign, Darlington Mowden Park will be using Rhino’s international-level match ball, the Rhino Vortex Pro, after becoming official partners with the British rugby brand.

The Rhino Vortex Pro was launched earlier this year having been tested at international tournaments, and will take centre stage for all Darlington Mowden Park home games, with Rhino also supplying training balls.

The world’s No.1 rugby equipment supplier and official match ball provider to Rugby Europe and Asia Rugby – which together count for 80 of the world’s rugby playing nations – has announced its aim to produce only rugby balls made using a high percentage of recycled rubber by the end of the decade.

Rhino has pioneered the world’s first range of rugby balls, covering grassroots to elite, and sizes 3-5, made using recycled rubber. The Rhino Zephyr training ball is made using 80% recycled rubber, the Rhino Recyclone is 70%, the Rhino Galaxy match ball 60% and the Rhino Vortex Recycled – recently used by Asia Rugby for the Olympic qualifiers – is also 60%. These initial four balls will be the foundation on which the Cardiff-based company will develop a wider range to meet the needs of every club, school, union and university across the world.

“Sustainability is vital to the future of not just any business, but any sport too,” says Reg Clark, CEO of Rhino. “When you have a market believed to be worth around 11 million rugby balls per year, the fact the vast majority of this is made using non-recycled market isn’t acceptable, and we’re trying to change that.”

While the entry level Zephyr, in sizes 3 to 5, is an accessible way for clubs, unions and countries to go green, Rhino have also delivered for the elite end of the game with the Vortex Recycled. It’s currently being rolled out across Asia Rugby, starting with the recent men’s and women’s Paris Olympic 7s Qualifiers in Osaka and it’s also been used in the Varsity Matches for the past two years.

“We have to deliver elite-quality balls,” continues Clark. “And we believe our match balls are among the very best in the world, something that’s been supported not just by their performance, but also by the countless kickers who have tested them.”

Rhino’s recent A Ball for the Planet campaign showcased the Zephyr, and featuring Khelo Rugby in India, a project that helps street kids get into, and stay in, education. “We truly believe this is ‘A Ball for the Planet’,” adds Clark “There are many innovations in the world, but one such as this that helps the planet itself, as well as being accessible to people of all backgrounds, and still delivering everything you could want in a ball – whatever your standard – has to be one of rugby’s most important inventions.”

What is a scrum machine?

What are the different types?

There are several types of scrum machines designed to meet different training requirements. Ranging from machines for individual skill development to full-size scrum machines for team practice, each is engineered to replicate the real-world scrummaging experience.

• Sled: This is the most common type of scrum machine and can cater to full teams or individual players. Designed with a heavy frame and pads, they remain stationary while players push against them to simulate the resistance of an opposing teams scrum. 

• Roller: Another popular choice and similar to the function of the sled, the difference being that this machine has rollers on the base which move backwards when pushed.

Rhino offers a wide range of balls and equipment for both rugby union and rugby league, but what distinguishes rugby union from rugby league?

Although rugby union and rugby league share a common ancestry and the fundamental aim of advancing a ball over a line to score points, the difference in rules, gameplay and culture sets them apart.

Here’s a closer look at the key differences between rugby union and rugby league, and what makes each code distinct.

Origins

The split between rugby union and rugby league traces back to 1895 in Northern England. Clubs in the north, mainly representing working-class communities, were advocating for players to be compensated for missing work due to matches – a concept that was opposed by the more amateur southern clubs. This disagreement led to the formation of the Northern Rugby Football Union, eventually evolving into rugby league, with rugby union maintaining its amateur status until turning professional in 1995.

Team composition

One of the most apparent differences lies in the size of the teams and the structure of the game.

Rugby union features 15 players per side, including 8 forwards and 7 backs. Rugby league features 13 players, removing the flanker and number 8 position, which leads to a faster paced game with more emphasis on individual athleticism and ball handling skills.

Balls

1. Size and shape

There are some very subtle differences between the shape and size of both rugby union and rugby league balls. 

Rugby union balls can look slightly bigger than rugby league balls, the size and shape are designed to facilitate more kicking. 

Rugby league balls may look slightly thinner as they are designed to be more pointed at the ends, this is intended to make the ball easier to handle and pass, as rugby league involves more frequent passing and slightly less kicking.

Although the standard ball size for both rugby union and league is size 5, the dimensions and weight may differ slightly from rugby union balls.

2. Weight

The weight between a league and union ball is very similar, but there can be slight variations due to the design of the ball. Both are designed to optimise the type of play and conditions they will be used in.

Tackling

In rugby union, the tackle contest is a critical component, giving rise to rucks and mauls where the ball can be contested by both teams post-tackle. This aspect introduces a strategic layer to retaining possession and advancing the ball.

Rugby league simplifies this with the “six-tackle rule” where the attacking team has six attempts to score before turning over the ball. This rule encourages a more open, flowing style of play and strategic kicking to gain territorial advantage.

Scoring

While both rugby union and rugby league have similar scoring methods – tries, conversions, penalty kicks and drop goals – the points awarded for each are slightly different.

In rugby union, a try earns five points, with two points for a successful conversion. Rugby league awards four points for a try and two points for conversions. This slight adjustment in scoring reflects the pace and strategic focus of each game.

Set pieces

Rugby union is renowned for its set pieces, including lineouts and scrums, which are crucial for possession and territorial gain. These elements require specific skills and strategies.

Rugby league simplifies the scrum to a less contested form, primarily used to restart play and does not feature lineouts, opting for tap restarts and kick-ins to maintain the games faster tempo.

Worldwide reach

Rugby union has a broad international presence, highlighted by iconic tournaments like the Rugby World Cup and the Six Nations Championship. Rugby league is immensely popular in regions like Northern England, Australia and New Zealand, and features competitions like the Rugby League World Cup and the Super League.

Overall, both codes of rugby offer their own history, culture and dedicated fan-base. As the world of rugby continues to evolve, Rhino remains at the forefront of both rugby union and rugby league with innovative and quality products for training and match-day performance.

Based in the heart of Kolkata, Khelo Rugby – or the Jungle Crows as many know the side – is a project launched almost 20 years ago aimed at helping the city’s street kids find a way to a better life. Today, they coach over 1,000 children across 36 of the city’s slums, as well as running projects in rural areas that also attract thousands.

About a decade ago, it was estimated around 113,000 children lived in railways stations across India. Among their number at one stage was one of the coaches of Khelo Rugby, Sukumar Handro. “I only knew the railway station, I don’t even know how I got here,” says Sukumar.  “I can’t remember my parents, I just know that when they left me at the station, I was with friends.

“We stole food, money, and we’d try to sleep anywhere at the railway station, maybe in a train if we could, hiding under a seat. We weren’t allowed to stay there, so the cops would come and find us, beat us and tell us to get out. The hardest thing was when we couldn’t find any food, we were always hungry.”

Aged seven, Sukumar was moved into a hostel by a charity, and it was from here, a year later, that he first found his way to the Jungle Crows.  “When I was first in the hostel, we weren’t allowed to go out,” he says. “They told us, ‘if you want to go out, then you have to play rugby!’ We’d go to the rugby and they’d give us food too, which was amazing, we loved it.”

Today, Sukumar, as well as being an international, is also captain of his state, West Bengal, and a key player for Khelo Rugby’s senior men’s side, Future Hope Harlequins, who are widely considered the second-best side in the country behind the Delhi Hurricanes.

Crow Field, their home ground, is set on the 400-acre Maidan park and is where Rhino – who have supported the organisation for over a decade – shot A Ball for the Planet.

Roughly 1.5 million people live in the slums of Kolkata, around a third of its inner-city population. “Most of the kids we coach are actually coming from different slums in Kolkata,” explains Pratap Kondu, who leads the coaching programme for Khelo Rugby. “We go and drop a rugby ball in the slums and try to attract all these kids to come and play, because most of the time, these kids don’t have anything to do.

“They say it’s like a dinosaur egg,” he laughs. “But once they get attracted to this ball, they keep coming back, we get them to go to school, because that's the most important part of our project – we try to make sure all of our kids are getting education.

“For these kids, life in the slum is very difficult,” he explains. “So early in the morning mum and dad leave the house, because they are all labourers in different areas, everybody has to work, which means these kids don't have anybody to guide them.”

Pratap is the perfect example of what can be achieved by the project. “I started playing rugby when I was a kid like them, with Khelo Rugby,” he explains. “I actually got kicked out of my house, because my mum got married to someone else when my father passed away.

“I can understand them well because I actually come from the same background. That can be very useful for them, understanding their problems, and you know, finding some solutions so they can do well in their life.

“That’s what do we,” he says. “Guide them in their life: play with them, take care of them, make sure that they're going to school and, once they are in high school, we make sure that they go for a degree-level college.”

Why did you decide to create the JB VII Headguard?
“I used to get really bad lacerations on the top of my eyes, and I wanted to protect myself from cauliflower ears. We’ve designed this headguard to stop all that from happening.”

How important is wearing a scrum cap? 
“You feel safer in the sense that you’ve got some added protection, particularly from lacerations and cauliflower ears. Wearing a headguard gives me confidence.”

What makes this headguard unique? 
“We’ve spent a lot of time designing the chin strap, that’s massive. I used to always find I’d get a lot of rubbing on the chin no matter what scrum cap I wore, so we’ve made this one to stop that.

The ear holes have also been modified to ensure they’re in the right position. There used to be a time where I’d wear different scrum caps and I wouldn’t be able to hear properly, which can be very frustrating during a game.

Another thing we’ve done is make sure the headguard doesn't sit too high in order to protect the vulnerable area above the eyes where cuts can often occur. 

And why red?
“I’ve always worn red because I feel it gives you a lot of confidence, and of course it goes with my Wales kit. “

Was it important to launch both junior and senior?
“We wanted to target the younger generation. More and more people are wearing scrum caps, so we wanted to make sure kids have the same protection but making it comfortable as well, all for a reasonable price.” 

What has been the feedback so far?
“The feedback has been great. The boys have said how lightweight it is, with the chinstrap there’s no rubbing at all, and everybody’s said you can hear perfectly well.”

Anything else?
“It’s by far the best scrum cap I’ve worn.”

Already official match ball supplier to Rugby Europe, Asia Rugby and Major League Rugby in America, Rhino will provide the sides in the men’s and women’s first Bundesliga with match balls made from recycled rubber, as well the national sevens championships. 

The partnership also sees Rhino, official equipment supplier to the British & Irish Lions, France, Wales and scrum machine provider to England, with technical training equipment to Rugby Germany’s national men’s and women’s sides.
