The Hartnett Gallery at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York is now accepting proposals from individual artists and groups interested in exhibiting their work during the 2012/13 academic year.

Established in 1972, this unique triangular gallery is located in one of the main buildings of the university, Wilson Commons, which was designed by the renowned architect I.M. Pei. The gallery has a rich exhibition history that includes both artists at the initial stages of their careers and artists who are internationally known.

Proposals should include: 1) a Curriculum Vitae, 2) an Artist’s Statement, 3) a Project Description, specifying spatial and technical needs, 4) 8-10 representative Digital Images, and 5) an Image List (title, date, dimensions, medium).

The ARTErra is a rural art residency structure that support and encourage artistic creation and production.
Housed in a remarkably small rural village, you will find in ARTErra physical spaces and tools for the reception of the project / proposal of the artist or collective of different artistic disciplines.
In addition to a house with several recreational areas and facilities, the ARTErra has a "creation yard" area where are the work spaces (sound studio and booth capturing, studio room, black & white box, glass room and atelier) framed by a garden, a small vegetable garden, an orchard and poultry.
With privileged contacts with some institutions and companies try to enhance and ensure a artist in residency to respond the needs and expectations of the projects accepted.

Submissions for Digital Graffiti at Alys Beach 2012 are now being accepted.

For two spectacular evenings the white walls of Alys Beach will be marked up, albeit temporarily, by projected art.

Request for Proposal
The Tech Museum in San Jose CA (http://www.thetech.org) is hosting an open Request for Proposals (RFP) for a long-term art and technology installation.

Project Description:
The Tech Museum seeks to commission a unique, long-term, art and technology-based installation. Piece will open with the Zero1 Biennial in September 2012.

The installation should have an “art and technology” emphasis and ideally be described as embodied, interactive, sociable, and tangible. Piece should be relevant to The Tech Museum’s mission to “inspire the innovator in everyone”.

For this particular piece, big is better than small. Tangible is better than virtual. Multi-sensory is better than single-sense. Motion is better than static. Muti-participant is better than single-participant. Consider how the piece can be interactive and responsive.

The actual placement for the piece has not been determined, so consider that it should function in a variety of indoor settings. Sculptural pieces may be a good fit. Consider an "in the round" approach, potentially allowing the piece to be viewed or interacted with from all sides. It should “inspire the innovator in everyone” through a sense of delight and wonder that is emotional.

Additional Details:
- Approximate footprint: 10 feet x 10 feet (3 meters x 3 meters).
- Fabrication is expected to be completed by The Tech Museum with supporting contractors.
- An exception to this would be made for pieces or components which can only be fabricated with the the contributing artist’s sole expertise.
- The mission of The Tech Museum is to “inspire the innovator in everyone.”
- The theme of the Zero1 2012 Biennial is “Seeking Silicon Valley”.

Budget:
Project should be feasibly constructed with a fabrication budget of approximately $25k USD.
A separate commission for the contributing artist will be negotiated.

Collaborate on an innovative, game-changing project

Do you have an interest in interactive design, pervasive gaming and augmented reality? Would you like to help develop a project that will literally transform New York? Are you dissatisfied with traditional approaches to arts education and outreach?
If you answered "Yes" to these questions, I would really like to hear from you. I am in the very early stages of developing a project which - I hope - will take New Yorkers and visitors on an unexpected adventure. But I need help.
I am looking for collaborators with the necessary skillset in terms of programming experience as well as a genuine interest and enthusiasm for helping people engage with the arts.

At this stage, I do not have any funding but I have a great deal of experience in fundraising and a number of contacts who I will approach once I have established a collective of people to help produce this project.

Call to Artists: LESP Keyholder Residency 2012

KEYHOLDER RESIDENCY PROGRAM

The Keyholder Residency Program offers emerging artists free 24-hour access to printmaking facilities to develop new work and foster their artistic careers. Residencies are one year long, starting on April 1, 2012, and take place in the Printshop’s shared Artists’ Studio. Facilities are available for intaglio, relief, monoprint, waterbased silkscreen, digital processes, and other techniques that employ the tools at hand.

Keyholders work independently in a productive atmosphere alongside other contemporary artists. Artists from all disciplines are eligible to apply; printmaking skills are not required, but some familiarity with the medium is recommended. Basic instruction in printmaking is provided for new Keyholders. Technical assistance is not included in the program, but is available at additional cost.

Participation is limited and competitive. Applications are evaluated by a panelist of seasoned artists, curators, critics, and art professionals based on the quality of submitted artwork. Artists currently without a studio space are encouraged to apply.

Keyholder Residency includes:
• 24-hour studio access
• $1,000 stipend
• storage space
• basic supplies (newsprint, blotters, solvents, cleaners)
• one free class in printmaking and consultations with Master Printers
• 20% discount on all Printshop classes
• free career development workshops
• free digital documentation of selected works produced during the residency

Recess is now accepting applications for Session, our signature program.

Applications are due March 15, 2011. Please Read All Application Guidelines Before Submitting Any Materials For Consideration. Applications will be used to fill residencies beginning September 2012 for SoHo, Manhattan and summer 2012 (exact time TBD) for Red Hook, Brooklyn.

Recess facilitates every-day interactions between artists and audiences in order to promote the productive space of the working artist as a site of valuable visual and intellectual interactions. Our endeavors promote critical exposure for the artists we support while fostering an inclusive environment in which artists and the public can engage in a meaningful exchange of art and ideas.

Recess is free and open to the public, and we encourage artists to engage with their audience in a manner specific to their creative goals, using Recess as a studio, exhibition space, stage, and/or experimental platform. Session artists have access to their space for the full duration of their residency (typically 2-3 months) and are expected to work on a daily basis or the equivalent of at least twenty hours per week. Session artists receive a small honorarium and a stipend based on the material needs of the residency. In conversation with Recess staff, artists designate their own work hours and the degree to which they coincide with public hours.

Recess is currently operating out of two spaces: one in SoHo, Manhattan and the other in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Applicants can indicate if they have a preference between the spaces.

Recess residents will be selected based on the conceptual rigor and artistic quality of their proposal and their ability to work productively within the program. Successful applicants will articulate a particular need to work in a manner that expands beyond traditional studio method and gallery exhibition.

In an effort to decentralize visual authority while maintaining a level of critical cogency a panel consisting of former Recess artists in residence, leaders from the contemporary arts community, and arts practitioners with programming experience will review Recess’s applications.

Artists must submit an application form (available to download on our website), CV, artists statement, project proposal, proposed budget, work samples, and a work description list.

Paul Kopeikin has owned and directed the Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles since 1991. He has mounted over 150 exhibitions of classic, modern and contemporary photography and works on paper. This includes exhibitions by such luminaries as Diane Arbus, Garry Winnogrand, Helen Levitt, Lee Friedlander, Weegee, Marion Post Wolcott and Ralph Eugene Meatyard. Contemporary artists Chris Jordan, Amy Stein and Jill Greenberg all got their start at the gallery. The gallery has participated in numerous art fairs and Mr. Kopeikin has juried numerous exhibitions. And yet he never tires of more.

ENTRY FEE: The entry fee is $15 for 5 images. Members at the Dual level ($75) and above may submit up to 8 images.

Filmideo is a yearly event, that celebrates the great diversity and work of independent filmmakers and video artists from around the globe.
For an entire month, IAC transforms it’s gallery space into a screening theater, where artists works are projected onto a 10’ x10’ screen and viewed by audiences of up to 100 people per screening.
We accept works by local, national and international artists.

Hartford, Connecticut – Real Art Ways announces its annual open casting call for emerging artists who live and work in New England, New York or New Jersey. Step Up 2012 is a series of six solo exhibitions. The chosen artists will receive an exhibition at Real Art Ways’ galleries, an exhibition publication and an opportunity to participate in an artist talk in conjunction with the exhibit schedule. Providing support and exposure to emerging artists is one of the main objectives at Real Arts Ways. For the last seven years, Real Art Ways has held an open call for emerging artists as a way to showcase their work at a critical point in their careers. Eligible artists are those living and working in New England, New York or New Jersey who are no more than three years removed from a full-time educational program, or artists with less than five years of exhibition experience. If an artist does not fit either of these criteria, but feel that they can make a compelling case to be considered for Step Up 2012, they are welcomed to apply. The jury will determine their competitiveness based on review criteria. Artists working in all media are welcomed to apply. Applicants should be aware of Real Art Ways’ mission and our commitment to innovative, non-traditional contemporary work.

-The details of the work you are submitting (medium, length, title, date)
- Form of submission (video, mp3, etc.)

- A brief bio/artist statement

Call for Entries - SMart Multimedia Arts Festival

Open Concept Gallery is currently accepting submissions for its annual multimedia arts festival to be held on March 30th, 2012 in Grand Rapids, MI. Smart Festival is Michigan’s only multimedia arts festival, and it was created by Open Concept Gallery in 2008 to encourage creativity and innovation in art happening now. The festival values collaboration, diversity, and accessibility, and is open to all local, national, and international artists exploring the possibilities of the new media genre in contemporary art. The week long event attracts hundreds of participants and features free openings, performances, and “accidental encounters with art” in and around Grand Rapids’ most significant cultural institutions.

This year’s Smart Festival will feature the sculpture Big Mind Sky, by contemporary Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone. The large scale neon sculpture encapsulates and makes palpable our unnamed collective desire to achieve new heights and expand our cultural awareness. To further explore these ideals, Smart Festival will be accepting new media art that analyzes the effect of internet technology on personal and social identity. The internet has allowed society to rapidly construct alternate realities and norms for communication that are constantly evolving. As online censorship debates abound a critical analysis and reflection on the impact of a virtual online world and its effect on our definitions of reality, personal identity, and a greater social consciousness.

Electricity is Magic was founded in 2009 by Matt Griffin and Eric Powell as a label to release experimental electronic and electroacoustic music. To date, EiM have released 6 physical and digital records. Quickly, they expanded their scope to include curatorial and gallery projects, beginning with Vinosonic at Chicago’s Experimental Sound Studio in September 2009. Since then, EiM have partnered with artists and galleries throughout North America to create performative and time-based events in unconventional spaces and contexts.

In the spring of 2012, EiM are proud to be opening the doors to the Electricity is Magic Gallery, an apartment space at 715 Richmond St., in Toronto.

Our aim with the gallery space is to continue to present works that don’t necessarily fit comfortably within a traditional gallery context. Artists will be given the challenge of presenting work which engages with or reacts to the living space of the apartment. We are particularly interested in work which employs some aspect of technological mediation, but not necessarily as the impetus for the piece. We’re also interested in slow art, which not only requests, but often demands, and always reminds us of the pleasure in sustained viewing of a particular work.

Call for works:

As we plan our 2012 season, we invite submissions from individual artists, collectives, or curators to submit proposals for the EiM Gallery. Our space is non-traditional, and as such, we have some unique parameters for artists to contend with. Our presentation spaces are as follows:

- The Blue Wall. appx. 5m x 2.5m, appropriate for any wall-based works. These works should probably look good on blue.

- The Scrim. appx. .7m x 1m, hole in a wall between two rooms, covered with a scrim. This space will be used primarily for video works. The Scrim is viewable from both sides, a fact which should be considered when proposing works.

- The Dining Room. our dining room comes completely empty, and is appx. 4m x 3m. This space can be used for a large sculptural work, installations, performances, audio work, etc.

- The Backyard. we have a small, unkempt, mostly concrete-covered backyard, which, legend has it, has a pond hidden somewhere underneath the concrete and planks of wood. There is a large brick wall at the back of the yard, and four steps leading down from the house. This space is appropriate for installations, performances, sculptures, etc.

- The Basement. We have a large, poorly-lit, unfinished basement. This space is appropriate for installations, performances, sculptures, audio work, etc.

When applying, please include:

1) A description of the proposed piece(s), including proposed presentation space
2) Bio/C.V.
3) Appropriate links, including website, images, publications, etc.
4) If the work you are proposing a new piece, any appropriate diagrams, etc.
5) Dimensions, durations and technical requirements of the proposed piece.
6) If the work has been presented previously, please include details as to where and
when.

Seismopolite Journal of Art and Politics - Reimagining the political geography of place and space

In the coming issue we wish to focus on political geographies, as well as artistic interventions in, and reimaginations of, such geographies. The distinction between “place” and “space” is of particular interest, as it is fundamental not only to much art, but also to our global situation within neoliberal political geography. If time has come for us to reimagine this geography, as well as the interrelationships between, and definitions of “space” and “place”, is it thinkable that art could be an ideal site for such reimagination?

The construction and exploitation of a particularism of the local also seems indigenous to the logic of neoliberalism, in the sense that it relies on the opposition between place and space to be able to expand in the first place. Among other things, the space-place dichotomy facilitates the reduction of developmental issues, political unrest or violence to irrational expressions of local misguidance, backward culture or belief systems. When the evolution of neoliberal space is merged with democratic and civilizing pretentions, the otherness and fixed specificity of places appears to be a legitimate pretext to expand into always new (potentially profitable) areas in and beyond the periphery.

The self-fulfilling prophesy of neoliberal geography also constitutes an effective impasse in alternative visions of political geography – on the one hand, by making the critical reconstruction of place and its interconnectedness with a larger picture, beyond the dichotomies of space/place and local/global, superfluous – on the other, by dissimulating any locally based meaning of universality that cannot be reduced to the civilizing prospects and ideals of neoliberal universalist geography. In this sense, the self-upholding myth of the local which neoliberal geography feeds on seems to express another form of orientalism, convincingly presenting itself and its worldview as the necessary cure to global and local problems, and reversely; presenting political issues in localities beyond its borders as a temporary void in its over-arching, inescapable logic.

Contributors from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds are invited to submit articles, exhibition reviews or interviews that address the theme “Reimagining the political geography of place and space”, through a high variety of possible angles.

Topics may include, but are not restricted to:

- Artistic approaches to political geography, artistic intervention in geopolitical discourses and decolonization strategies.
- The concepts of space and place in art, and their renegotiation through art.
- The role of art and artists in the rewriting of history and political geography in post-colonial situations.
- The relationship between neoliberal political geography and orientalism.
- The art biennial as a global phenomenon, and its role in the (re)negotiation of political geography.
- The relationship between the global art scene and neoliberal political geography.
- The relationship between art and geography.

New Pyramids for the Capitalist System by Robby Herbst

Dumbo Arts Center is pleased to present “New Pyramids For the Capitalist System,” an exhibition by Robby Herbst. “New Pyramids For The Capitalist System” explores acrobatics, class, bodies and interpersonal dynamics through a series of large-scale drawings, installations, and performances of human pyramids. The project was inspired by Herbst’s grandfather’s photos (a collection of beach and socialist acrobats) and a 1911 diagram produced by Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) called “Pyramid for the Capitalist System.”

Spring Artist Lodge

HERE is currently accepting applications to our Spring Artist Lodge – this hybrid performance series offers bold artists space for up to one week for technical rehearsals and 4-5 performances. The Lodge will run from March 12-April 22 in our Dorothy B. Williams Theatre.

HERE provides space, equipment, box office services, and technical support. HERE will include the series on our website and in a weekly e-blast to our 16,000 subscribers.

Artists are responsible for production expenses, artist fees, marketing and any additional staff required for their show. Running time may not exceed 80 minutes.

Tickets are $15. The first 20 tickets go to HERE, followed by a 50% / 50% split of the box office between HERE and Artist.

Applications are due Monday, February 6. Artists will be notified by February 10.

Everything is Index, Nothing is History

Recession Art is now accepting submissions of artwork in all media for our next exhibition, to be held at the Invisible Dog in Brooklyn from June 2 – 17, 2012. Curated by Melanie Kress, Everything is Index is an exhibition about writing and interpreting history, specifically contrasting histories written through language with histories inscribed on the physical world. An “index” may be a footprint, a scar, a photograph—a document pointing to a moment in time. Everything is Index is an exhibition about how we experience the world as an accumulation of physical traces. Of special interest are works that engage in alternative modes of writing, framing, and interpreting history. And question how we determine truth and veracity. Works may address topics such as archive, information systems, story telling, the natural sciences, and photography.

Nida Art Colony invites artists, designers, architects, curators, and art researchers to meet the coming summer and autumn on the Baltic Sea coast in the Curonian Spit National Park. The Colony was opened in March 2011 as a new branch of the Vilnius Academy of Arts (Lithuania).

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: INTER-FORMAT SYMPOSIUM ON REMOTENESS

The symposium is a part of a project of the Baltic-Nordic Network of Remote Art & Residency Centers; however, it is open to participants from all over the world. Through the symposium we hope to build a network of remotely located centers, and learn different approaches to these unique places. The symposium is a 3-day-long event (May 17-20). The contributors are invited to share their experiences working and living in remotely located art & residency centers as directors and cultural managers, and as practicing artists and participants. The format: The format is open; proposals can vary from lectures and workshops to performances and site-specific artworks. We are able to provide accommodation and catering to a limited number of participants. Travel expenses are subject to availability.

Deadline: Please send a short proposal (up to 500 words + visual material if needed) by March 31, 2012

Nida Art Colony’s remote location and beautiful surrounding landscape provide the time and inspiring solitude missing from modern urban life. A residency in Nida will meet your expectations if:
● the intensity of urban life—curators, openings, presentations—consumes all of your time and leaves you without energy to concentrate on artistic practice;
● you are working with site-specific projects involving local communities, reflecting on the natural and/or cultural environment;
● you love coincidences and want to meet artists from all over the world in order to collaborate with them now or in the future;
● you need a large space for experiments—the whole forest and beach can be your studio.

Deadline for residency applications: February 15, 2012

Dates and duration of the residencies: 1 to 4 months between June 1 and December 31, 2012. The recommended duration of a residency is 2 months.

Costs: Studio and living space rent is 412 Eur/month (June-September) and 312 Eur/month (October-December), including all taxes, use of equipment, communal spaces, bicycles and the minivan.

Since 1993, HERE Arts Center has been one of New York’s most prolific producing organizations, and today, it stands at the forefront of the city’s presenters of daring new hybrid art. HERE supports multidisciplinary work that does not fit into a conventional programming agenda. Our aesthetic represents the independent, the innovative, and the experimental. HERE supports the work of artists at all stages in their careers through fully-produced works, commissions and subsidized performance and rehearsal space. In addition, HERE’s staff provides marketing, technical and administrative support. All work at HERE is curated based on the strength and uniqueness of the artist’s vision.

One of our most vital services, the HEREstay Program, supports 250 guest independent artists and groups—such as New Georges, Vampire Cowboys, and ViBe Theater Experience (an educational arts group for underserved urban teen girls)—and their audiences each season.

This creative curated rental program has allowed many upstart companies and emerging artists to realize their full artistic vision on a small budget. The program provides subsidized performance and rehearsal space, technical assistance, and administrative support, including a fully staffed box office. Call to Artists for Kinect Based Artworks

The Collider Exhibition Series examines the impact, implications and inspiration of the phenomenon generally categorized under the umbrella term New Media within the design practice and fine arts.

The theme for Collider :: C4 this year is spectacle.

The Collider :: C4 Exhibition will have an area we will call the Kinect Cube. The Kinect Cube setup will contain a computer (PC and Mac) with a projector and speakers setup to showcase Kinect Based Artworks.

Spectacle refers to an event that is memorable for the appearance it creates.
Spectacle operates in two contexts simultaneously. On the one hand, it refers to high culture (drama, movies) performances where the draw for an audience is the impressive visual accomplishment. On the other hand, it refers to low cultural shows operating in a folk environment. These can range from the freak show to folk drama to tableau and beast-plays.

Submissions via email must include:
· Artist’s name
· Artist’s address, phone and email
· Title and date of artwork
· Software setup needed to run your artwork
· Small paragraph describing the artwork and how it functions
· Link to a video showing the piece working. Please send the link to a private/public video on either Vimeo or YouTube in your email.

A selection panel will review all applications and select up to 12 pieces for exhibition during C4 in the Kinect Cube. Selected artists will be notified via email/phone. If selected, all artwork delivery will be made via digital transfer.

The Collider :: C4 exhibition will open on Monday, March 19th, 2012 and runs through Friday April 13th, 2012 at the Emily Davis Gallery, Myers School of Art at The Univeristy of Akron.

Avalanche magazine - scholarly papers and personal memories

For the next issue of Art and Documentation journal we invite texts on the "Avalanche" magazine, edited by Liza Bear and Willoughby Sharp between 1970-76.

We are interested in publishing both scholarly papers that would be peer-reviewed and personal memories of artists and art critics on how the magazine influenced them.

There is no requirement as of the article's length. All submissions will be translated into Polish and published in spring 2012 issue in conjunction with Liza Bear's lecture in Lodz, on April 12th 2012.

Drift Station, an artist-run gallery and performance space in Lincoln, Nebraska, is calling for artist books, zines, comics, small presses, and other non-traditional publications. For the duration of the exhibition, Drift Station will become a bookstore/reading library where the public can look through, peruse, and purchase artworks.

You may send us as many copies of as many works as you want. Any and all publications will be included – our goal is to fill the gallery! Works will be displayed on tables and shelves and must be able to be handled by the public for the duration of the exhibition without gloves. Because of this work has the potential to get damaged, please do not send us elaborate or delicate books that are not meant to be handled by the general public.

All work must either be free or for sale for under $30. In cases where work is sold, Drift Station will take a 40% commission and deposit the remainder into the artist’s PayPal account. Unsold works may either be left at Drift Station for later purchase/given away or will be sent back to the artists (SASE required).

The Contemporary Artists Center has recently opened its newest residency program on the campus of the Woodside National Historic Register Site in Troy, NY. Two neo-gothic stone church buildings now house our artist program and welcome artists from all over the U.S. and abroad.
The CAC is located 2.5 hours north of NYC, and is currently accepting applications for the Spring season.

Award Priority Deadline: February 1
Regular Deadline: February 15

The CAC focuses on emerging and early career artists and accepts applicants who offer quality in their art and encourages diversity of style, medium (2-D, 3-D, 4-D) and concepts.

Our facility features high-ceiling, adaptable studio space open 24 hours a day with some specialized studio facilities, exhibition opportunities, weekly critiques, and free access to all CAC events. The living area includes lofted bedrooms, living room / library, dining room, and kitchen & bath.

The Parsons Journal for Information Mapping (PJIM) is calling for papers and projects for publication in the Spring Issue – The 2nd Issue of Volume IV.

PJIM is an academic journal and online forum designed to share knowledge about information mapping and its related disciplines (information design, data/knowledge visualization, taxonomies, data analytics, informatics, information systems, and graphic interface design).

PJIM is published quarterly by the Parsons Institute for Information Mapping and focuses on both the theoretical and practical aspects of information visualization. With each issue, the Journal aims to present novel ideas and approaches that advance the field of Knowledge Visualization through visual, engineering, and cognitive methods.

We are interested in publishing original essays, academic manuscripts, interactive and non-interactive projects, and project documentation that address representation, processing, and communication of information. PJIM encourages interdisciplinary thinking and approaches.

We are open to submissions regarding, but not limited to, the following disciplines:
• Visual analysis and interpretation,
• Social, political, or economic discourse surrounding information, distribution and use,
