Recreation and Parks Meeting on Bocce Ball Courts

If you were unable to join Rincon Hill neighbors on Tuesday, August 24th when Lev Kushner from the Recreation and Parks Department discussed the proposed bocce ball courts for the grassy park space by the Railway Museum, you have another opportunity to hear about the proposed idea this coming Tuesday.

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department invites interested community members to attend a meeting to discuss a proposed gift to the City of construction of bocce courts in the lawn at Justin Herman Plaza.

This proposed gift includes a clause that would require the donor to remove the courts at any time in the future should the City decide to pursue other uses of the plaza.

By the way, did you see the article in the Chronicle by Rachel Gordon today about Rincon Hill resident Adhamina Rodriguez’s determination to try to get a children’s playground built for the 900+ kids in our neighborhood each weekday (not to mention hundreds to thousands visiting the Ferry Building an on the north side of Market Street)?

As an update, Adhamina and I along with the help of some friends who work for the City are trying to find out if the concrete slab just south of the grassy park space that will likely become partially changed to bocce ball courts might also be Recreation and Parks Department Property. If so, that might be a great spot for a playground instead of just serving as a parking spot for City of San Francisco vehicles. That way, we could have bocce ball in the grassy section of the park space and, if it is park space, a playground on what is now concrete just south of the grassy park space.

CONSIDER SPEAKING AT THE POLICE COMMISSION HEARING THIS WEDNESDAY.

Community Patrol USA has worked alongside the San Francisco Patrol Special Police organization, and many of their individual officers, for a number of years in many neighborhoods around the city of San Francisco, including South Beach, Castro and Glen Park. We respect, trust and greatly admire their work and dedication to the clients and neighborhoods they serve. Thus we were surprised to hear on the “grapevine” that a report by a Public Safety Strategies Group (PSSG), a research group out of Boston, MA commissioned by the SF Police Commission over two years ago, is expected to paint an entirely different opinion of this fine force of officers than the one we’ve come to know and trust.

There is even an expectation that the report, which is now more than one year overdue, may recommend the disbanding of the San Francisco Patrol Special Police organization entirely !

If you feel strongly about the value, effectiveness and need for this organization and these officers to be able to continue to serve and protect our neighborhoods and communities alongside the paid public police officers of the San Francisco Police Department, please consider attending the Police Commission meeting this Wednesday and sharing your thoughts with the Police Commissioners.

The report is scheduled to be presented before the Police Commission this Wednesday at 05:30pm in City Hall, room 400 #1 Carlton B. Goodlett Place.

One Week Look Ahead: Transbay Demolition Activities
August 27, 2010 – September 3, 2010

This week at Transbay…

Weekday Activities: Completion of the demolition of bridge columns from Beale Street to Fremont Street.

Hours of Work: Demolition will continue throughout the week between the hours of 6:00 AM and 3:00 PM. No night or weekend work is scheduled for this week. No work is scheduled for Labor Day weekend.

Sidewalk Closure (tentative):The sidewalk on the south side of Howard (adjacent the Temporary Terminal), between Main and Beale Streets, will be closed from September 1, 2010 until September 24, 2010 due to the demolition of the bridge columns and footings. Flaggers will be on-site during work hours.

Community Meeting: We hope that you will join us for our monthly demolition meeting on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 12:00 noon and 6:00 PM. The meeting will be held at the TJPA offices at 201 Mission Street in Suite 2100.

Eat at Chevy’s on Sunday to Raise Money for Mission Bay Families

While neighbors in Rincon Hill are pursuing an opportunity to build a children’s playground in or nearby our part of town for the 900+ kids in our neighborhood every weekday with no place to play, there are other SoMa waterfront neighborhood groups that are also in need of a place for families to take their kids to play. Mission Bay Families in one such group.

This Sunday, you can help by presenting a printout of this flier to the waitperson at Chevy’s on 3rd and Howard to have 15% of your bill donated to Mission Bay Families. The funds raised will help to build a playground at Mission Creek Park. Please support the effort and help spread the word. Be sure to present a printed copy of the flier to the waitperson so Chevy’s will credit 15% of the bill to Mission Bay Families.

Thankfully, our neighborhood does not have lots of liquor stores selling pocket sized bottles of booze. If you receive notice for a new alcoholic beverage license application from a nearby address, I suggest you attempt to get the following conditions included in the license.

- Petitioner shall illuminate the area so that activities outside the place of business can be monitored

ROBBERY PREVENTION TIPS

There has been a recent spike in street robberies or muggings which has left many San Franciscans on high alert. SAFE encourages everyone to be extra aware, and to take some general precautions when out in public.

Some of the items that are commonly stolen are cell phones, MP3 players or iPods, and laptop computers. Per Captain Louis Cassanego, over a one-month period 11% of the robberies in the Ingleside Police District have occurred on MUNI, and 16% had 3 or more suspects.

He also offered some basic tips for prevention:

Do not use your iPod, personal electronics or cell phones on MUNI buses or in public places.
Keep your house keys in your pockets, not in your bag.
Keep your important identification, cash and credit cards in your pockets, not in your bag.
Never leave your items unattended. If you are using your laptop in a café, sit inside away from the door.
Be aware of your surroundings, whether waiting for the bus or walking on the street.
Move to a closer seating position next to the MUNI driver when possible.
Avoid carrying cash. Immediately deposit your pay or check.
If you are a victim of a robbery, walk into a public place and call the police.
Vehicle descriptions are important, too.
Always report the crime immediately.

Lastly, Captain Cassanego mentioned that robbers are taking cell phones from the victims, not only for its value, but to delay the victim from calling the police. There are many reports where the suspect is “patting down” the victims for their cell phones to ensure the police aren’t immediately called.

These robberies have also occurred in other parts of the City. You can do your part to prevent crime by being aware and learning important safety tips.

Beale Street Overpass Successfully Removed

This past weekend, we successfully removed the bus ramp over Beale Street, between Howard and Folsom Streets. Demolition will continue throughout the week between the hours of 6:00 AM and 3:00 PM. No night or weekend work is scheduled for this week.

Demolition is required in order to make way for the new Transbay Transit Center at First and Mission Streets.
