<itunes:summary>Born in 2005 from the ashes of Turntable Radio and helmed by Mr Trick and Waxfactor, Rhythm Incursions started life as a radio show airing music that 'picked up where hip hop stopped'. Since then it has evolved to continue its mission and today - in a world where hip hop has evolved to embrace its mutations that were the exceptions rather than the norm only a few years ago - it provides discerning music for discerning ears with monthly shows and guest mixes from hand picked worldwide DJs, producers and labels. The Rhythm Incursions presenting team now includes Primus Luta and DDay One from the USA, Raid System from Tokyo and Laurent Fintoni from London as well as two exclusive guest mix series curated by Friends of Friends and Raid System. We love the music we play and we think you will too.</itunes:summary>

Every once in a while something special comes along in our inbox, an old mix we’d requested from some close friends or an unexpected submission. This past week was one of those occasions. Two old friends of ours, And and Joe Clockwork, sent us a brand new mix which they’d hinted at in the past year but which I knew would be ready when the time came (they’re best not rushed those two, fine gentlemen that they are).

Enter The Dragon Stout is a mix in the purest Rhythm Incursions tradition. 40 minutes of classics stitched together as only these two are capable of, with the sort of skits and attention to detail that’s become all too rare.

There is no tracklist, I’m not even going to mention what’s in it, you should just know that it’s dope from beginning to end and even though the names might not mean much to you they come highly recommended. Like HIGHLY. Family tree stuff.

As always you can download and/or stream below or subscribe to our RSS or iTunes feed to get all shows direct.

With all this said, sit down, pop a Dragon Stout and chill like Bruce Lee.

This week’s guest mix comes from Berlin and fits with the winter mood here in our part of the world. Tolcha are a Berlin-based four piece band who do ‘Kraut Dub’. Their new album, Neustadt, has just been released on Neopren. Originally written and imagined as a film score, it’s a deep electronic dub trip that very much operates along the lines of the ‘music for unknown movie’ idea that’s been used by the likes of Vadim among others.

Anyways Tolcha were kind enough to do a guest mix for us in celebration of the release, and the music on this 1h mix is very much in line with the new album: deep, hypnotic and with quite a Germanic touch some might even say. It’s definitely a departure from stuff we’ve showcased before, but the mix’s (and album) dub grounding is very much what makes it attractive to our ears.

As always you can download and/or stream the mix below, or simply subscribe to our RSS/iTunes feeds to receive all shows automatically.

You can find out more about Tolcha and order the new album on their site.

We’re back for 2013. First mix of the year is a special from Primus Luta who having recovered from the recent hurricane that wrecked NYC delivers a themed mix of IDM productions. I’ll let him explain the why…

“IDM is a MILF, especially in this reinvented EDM era. Before there was Ableton Live she knew how to patch an MS20 to get that filter sweep that is now two clicks away. Before there were sampled 808s she programmed real 808s and sampled on reel to reels. She’s old now, you may not recognizer her with all the cosmetic surgery, and hanging with her probably won’t get you on any cool list, but she’s still hot and a lot of cats still fuck with her. So this is dedicated to them and the one couple that will turn this mix into baby making music. And if you feel like you have to complain about my selection of “IDM” I salute you because you never stopped fucking with her.”

And that as they say is that. As always download and/or stream below or simply subscribe to the iTunes/RSS feeds (links below).

Ladies and gents we have something real special for you on this Monday morning. It takes the shape of a brand new mix from David Vangel, the Equinox recordings artist some of you might remember from his guest mix, In My Rumination, a few years back. However this isn’t just your average guest mix, rather it’s a themed mix around numbers. When Vangel hit us up a while back with the idea of a mix featuring music somehow related to numbers (in the title, lyrics) we were not only down but pretty curious to see what he could come up with. The result is a 30 odd minute trip of musical and numerical madness, from rap to country, talkies to funk. The mix itself oscillates between cut and paste, mixing, cutting and just plain old ‘here’s a tune you didn’t expect to hear’.

So without much more to say other than this is not only tons of fun it’s also totally child friendly (for those of you with little ones), here is David Vangel’s Count Numberella mix. Download it, play it, count to it.

PS: As always download and/or stream it below or subscribe to the RSS/iTunes feed to bag shows direct

PPS: He’s even given us a tracklist!

We close this week with a guest mix from Ireland courtesy of Hsuan Records. The label’s owner, Graeme who releases on the label under a variety of names including Sight, Kuei and Arianna, delivered a mix of influences to show the foundations of both his productions and A&R for the label.

As always with us, after Graeme got in touch last month to share some music we invited him to deliver a mix for our on going guest series and after turning it around a lot quicker than originally thought, here’s what he had to share about the mix’s intent:

This mix is a snapshot of current and past influences which, have shaped my current Dj’ing and production style. From early ’00 hip hop to the granulated works of Fennesz, Tim Hecker and James Holden to more current influences. Ranging from the sprawling London sound of UK funky which I first heard in late 2008 to the recent influx of Juke and footwork inspired productions of which I’ve included one of my own works under the Arianna alias. Enjoy

And there you have it, an hour long journey into what makes Hsuan records tick, including plenty of our own favourites and some interesting, diverse linking from UK Funky to juke and footwork.

For more on Hsuan Records you should head over to their Soundcloud page where you can peruse most of their back catalogue. Or if (shock, horror) you feel like buying some music check their Boomkat catalogue.

As always stream and/or download the mix below or simply subscribe to our iTunes/RSS feeds and never miss a show.

No two ways about it, this Monday morning in London is the definition of grim. All the more reason then to turn that frown upside down with a new guest mix from Touchy Subject, a London-based producer you may remember as one of our first ever guests back when I took over the Rhythm Incursions guest series in 2008. Four years later the man is still at it, having had releases on Numbers among others. We’ve featured him on the show a fair few times too, and he keeps delivering the goods every time an email hits the inbox with some new music to check.

For this second guest mix he’s done a heavy selection of dancefloor favourites, so heavy in fact it nearly killed his machine…

Here are some bits and bobs I’ve been playing recently when djing late night sets with some down time at the end. My mac was punished making the mix as you will hear what the poor guy sounds like at the end. This eagle has won its medal. Been locked up in the studio with loads of new material to come from myself and a few other projects, one being the Yawning Young stuff. Lots of free downloads on my Soundcloud for those who care to indulge.

The Soundcloud in question is found here, and he wasn’t lying – it’s chock full of goodness.

If you live in London you can catch Touchy Subject at the Cardboard Boss parties in the pulsating trendy nerve centre of the city that is East London.

For now sit back and enjoy. As always you can download and/or stream below or simply subscribe to the RSS/iTunes feeds and never miss a show.

Our Friends of Friends mix series returns with a mix from Mor Elian, a Los Angeles based DJ and jewellery maker (by the looks of it). So not your usual combo then, but seeing as it’s FoF we’re dealing with we wouldn’t expect anything less.

The mix takes in a fair few regulars alongside old favs, everyone from Om Unit, Arp101, Elliot Yorke and Groundislava to Sa-Ra Creative Partners and Erykah Badu alongside Machinedrum, Krts, Nguzunguzu. It flows nicely, a perfect set up for the weekend.

Here’s some words from the crew about it

Fresh off a summer run touring through Europe, the UK, and Israel, Mor Elian stopped by the FoF office with this savory bass heavy mix primed to rattle and rile you up. The LA*Tel Aviv native shares a collection of choice cuts curated over her worldly travels. Built around the stellar Girl Unit Juke refix of Erykah Badu’s “Bag Lady”, prepare to lock into a rhythmic ride from Nguzunguzu, B. Bravo & Teeko, Machinedrum & Falty DL, and our very own Groundislava.

Closing the month of August is our ever dynamic Tokyo duo XLII and Broken Haze aka Raid System. Having just released Lewis James’ debut EP, Heavy Romance, and come off a busy summer of shows and remix work (XLII’s popped up on Ninja Tune among other places) the pair deliver the usual hour long selection of up front cuts and dancefloor numbers.

Looking over the releases from the past few months the pair have selected music from LV, Baobinga, Om Unit, LDFD, Grenier, Cid Rim, Bobby Tank, Lewis James, Terror Danjah and quite a few cuts from the recent Secluiasis releases too. As always it’s a high energy affair brought to you in glorious Anglo-Japanese audio vision (actually no vision, just audio).

Today’s guest mix comes via Brooklyn, New York courtesy of Fenbred. We first discovered him via our good friends from LV. In fact I can’t quite remember exactly what the deal was but in some typical roundabout internet way we found his Soundcloud through them, got chatting and then you know, did what we always do which is ask for a mix when we spot dope people who need more attention.

He duly obliged with a 50 minute selection that is quite frankly the perfect solution to what’s currently a fairly grim Monday here in London. Though its sonic qualities definitely fit a beautiful sunny day or calm, warm evening as well. It’s smooth and bouncy in all the right ways.

There is no tracklist or much else to say, other than if you like what you hear you should head over to Soundcloud where you can acquaint yourself with some of his music and stay tuned for some releases coming soon. We’ll no doubt be airing some of his music in the near future.

As always you can listen and/or stream the mix below or simply subscribe to our RSS/iTunes feeds and never miss a show.

Enjoy!

Oh no you’re not dreaming, you are looking at a new, proper Rhythm Incursions podcast from yours truly following a six month hiatus. To be fair, Primus Luta and Raid System have held the fort in the time being and I’ve been kept busy by the BLN.FM residency as well as this thing called life (and launching the Original Cultures label among others). Still it’s nice to be back.

This month’s podcast picks up where we left off, two hours of discerning music for discerning ears covering some of the stuff I’ve been enjoying in the first half of the year alongside a whammy of new, unreleased and forthcoming music from the likes of Quakers, Kahn & Neek, Cosmic Bridge Records, Madlib, Konjah, Youngteamm, Lil Jabba, One Handed Music, the new JJ DOOM project, Lorn, Anenon, Cooly G and LV on Hyperdub, Kad Driver, Yes Creator, Open Mike Eagle, Typesun, Bolts, Submerse, Mala’s exciting In Cuba project, Yosi Horikawa, Comma, dBridge and more.

This month’s show has been a pleasure to put together, not least because it’s been such a while but also because it takes in a real diverse scope of music from hip hop and beats to electronic experiments and dance music explorations in and outside of genre boundaries. I feel it’s a been a good year for music so far, and I hope you’ll agree. Those of you paying attention will notice quite a few of the artists we’d earmarked as ones to watch at the beginning of the year as well. It won’t be this long until the next instalment, I promise.

As always you can download and/or stream the show below, or simply subscribe to our iTunes/RSS feed and never miss a show.

Enjoy!

We return to the Friends of Friends mix series today with a very special appearance by the one and only Dublab radio, the L.A-based non profit station that has been broadcasting to the city of Angels and beyond for well over ten years now, providing positive vibrations and good music to those with open hearts and ears. It’s fair to say that Dublab are among the nicest people to ever do it, a constant inspiration to many including ourselves as Rhythm Incursions.

For this edition of the FoF Mix series Ale from Dublad delivers a smooth selection of Essential Elements from the likes of Can, John Talabot, Maria Minerva, Test House and more. A deep selection of new music and Dublab favourites designed to expand your mind and move you forward. It’s perfect timing really, the mix providing a nice counterbalance for us to all the noise around that event that shall not be named and which is starting today in London.

So without further ado get stuck into Dublab’s Essential Elements (FoF edition), which you can download and/or stream below as always – or simply subscribe to our iTunes/RSS feeds and never miss a show.

This Friday’s guest mix comes courtesy of Archie Pelago, a trio of musicians from NYC – namely Hirshi, Cosmo D and Kroba – who simply describe what they do (on their Soundcloud page) as ‘we play instruments and make beats, TOGETHER’. While accurate and to the point, it’s perhaps a little understated when you consider the music they’ve been coming out with.

I first got in touch with the guys following a piece I did on footwork for RBMA a few months back. We started talking via Twitter and they sent over a bunch of music they’d been working on, operating at footwork/juke speeds but flipping the templates with their own, jazz influenced style. And let’s face it, it’s not everyday something like this lands in your inbox so the curiosity was definitely high. Following this we did what we always do which is offer the guys a chance to do a mix and showcase their music and approach to you, the listeners. They duly obliged and have delivered what is quite possibly one of the deepest mixes we’ve had so far, and definitely the most engrossing one this year. It’s a real rewarding headphone listen that actually reminds me of some of the music that was a catalyst for Trick and Waxfactor starting Rhythm Inc back in 04, the likes of NYC’s The Agriculture, Raz Mesinai or even the legendary Wordsound label.

Here’s some words about the mix from Archie Pelago:

The mix was done quickly and on a whim. Ultimately, we wanted to commit some of our newer, faster material into a live context. Our overriding guideline was that the mix get slower BPM-wise over time while still building in energy. As with all our mixes, it was made completely on-the-spot, deploying our dj / instrumental approach that makes up our live show.

The DJ/instrumental approach they refer to is quite interesting – especially if you nerd on things like this – and you can see a diagram of it here. As you can see, we’re not talking your usual set up. The result, as can be heard in the mix and the trio’s production, is a strange blend of electronic/dance music’s energy with the vibrancy and organic qualities of live instrumentation.

As you’ll hear on this mix, we’re talking a heady experience featuring quite a few notable artists we’re fans of here at Rhythm Inc towers – Scuba, Tunnidge, Skream, and DJ Diamond – alongside Archie Pelago’s own productions.

If (like us) you find yourself intrigued by Archie Pelago’s music and approach then be sure to check out their Soundcloud page – which also links to their individual pages – where you’ll find live shows and some of their existing and forthcoming releases including their remix for Distal, their EP on Car Crash Set and more. They’ve also got a remix out on Sonic Router’s brand new label, for the Wattville 12″ (featured at the end of this mix). I think it’s fair to say this won’t be the last time you’ll hear from them, and we’ll be including some of their work in future shows too.

As always you can listen and/or stream below or simply subscribe to our RSS/iTunes feeds and receive all the shows directly to your inbox.

Thanks to Archie Pelago for the time and enjoy!

We return to our #lightbox series – an introduction to which is here if you’re new to it or have forgotten – with SertOne, a young Irish producer who some of you might remember from the two compilations Laurent curated last year, Nihon Kizuna and Finest Ego.

Sert is definitely one of the nicest young producers we’ve come across in a while, someone who is not only talented and quite clearly working at their art but who is also – as we discovered once we met back in February – deeply interested in the history of the music, its past, present and potential futures. Being that he’s also quite young, we really do think that the future might be bright for this lad.

As he was also part of the Lightbox tour we asked him for a mix. He was slowest to answer but we’ll forgive him considering what he’s delivered for us. See below for tracklist and link. The mix is by his own admittance an attempt to combine various influences and music he loves, from folk to hip hop, and after two failed attempts the mix he’s come out with, based on the tracklist alone, is a corker – including plenty of classics that we’ve been bumping for years alongside dope new rap, electronic music and friends of ours.

Sert’s latest EP, Shapes In The Sky, is out now on Melted Music – disclaimer: Laurent wrote the one sheet for it so we’re obviously totally biased. It’s a great four tracker that showcases the producer’s evolving sound, his definite inspiration from the past – hints of Dabrye are quite clear in some of the music – and his intention to try and shape a future for what he’s doing. We recommend you cop that, as well as his previous releases. This EP will be followed by one from Monto, another Lightbox artist we featured a few months back.

This mix marks the end of our Lightbox series for now. All that remains now is to find more new Irish talent to showcase I guess – don’t worry there’s a few people we want to hit up already. Thanks to all the artists who took part for their time and generosity, in case you missed any of it, here they all are: Tenaka – Collected, Bantum – #lightbox Mix, and Monto – #lightbox Mix.
