Accepting Submissions for Adobe MAX Awards

Submissions for Adobe MAX Awards 2009 are being accepted now through July 31 2009, and nominations for projects other than your own are being accepted though June 30, 2009.

The top three finalists in each of eight categories will be invited to showcase their work at MAX 2009 in Los Angeles, CA. Winners will be announced at the MAX event.

Flex 4, Flash Builder 4 & Flash Catalyst 1 Beta Released

Adobe enters June with a bang, finally making its first beta version of the new generation Flex framework and all its associated tooling available to the public. Read the official press release — Adobe Announces New Flash Platform Tools.

If you are an early adopter and haven’t been part of the pre-release program, then this is your chance to go download and play with the framework and its IDE. First get the Flex 4 SDK. (The Flex framework itself is open source and you can access more information and all the builds online at ”opensource.adobe.com”. Flex 4 is codenamed Gumbo.)

The Eclipse based IDE for Flex, which was originally called Flex Builder, is now called Flash Builder. Flash Builder 4 beta is available for you as well.

Finally, there is also a beta release of the much hyped and talked about Flash Catalyst tool. This new tool is at the epicenter of the new and streamlined designer-developer workflow. Designers can now create interfaces using their familiar tools like Illustrator and Photoshop and these same assets can be imported into Flex projects as live modifiable resources using Flash Catalyst as the critical transformer in the middle.

Scribble Maps is an easy and intutive way of customizing Google Maps without worrying about its API or the underlying data model. Simply use the usual drawing tools and starting customizing the maps. Then save it as an image and send it out to whosoever you please.

As per the Scribble Maps website, you can use its services to:

Draw shapes and Scribble!
Place Markers and text
Create a Custom Widget
Save as JPG/KML/GPX
Send maps to friends

Google Profile: Yet Another Identity!

In the lines of social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn and portals like Yahoo, Google has introduced a profile page. Your profile page will be accessible via custom and vanity URLs of the form http://www.google.com/profiles/ProfileID. The ProfileID will match with your gmail id.

Google’s website says you can do the following on your profile page:

Receive messages from other Google account holders
Add pictures from Flickr or Picasa
Create a page about you
Add your contact information
Link to your other profiles — i.e. those on Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn or Twitter
Show your location

Although nothing is novel about this offering, it promises to organize your social networking facets and identities under one umbrella. In addition, one can hope it will be indexed effectively by the Google search engine and so may be easily found.

This new service raises potential concerns of increased spamming considering the ProfileID is going to match your gmail id.

De-Wolfe to Step Down as MySpace CEO

With increasing competition from Facebook and the slow growth of its user base, MySpace has been going through some tough times lately.

The most recent development, in an effort to save MySpace as a social networking leader, is an attempt to restructure its management. Chris DeWolfe one of the co-founders of MySpace will step down from his position as the Chief Executive of the company. He probably moves on to a new startup and the professionals brought in by News Corp. are likely to take over.
