I’ve lost 30 pounds on four separate occasions over the past 15 years. I’ve made plenty of mistakes, but each time I’ve lost weight, I found ways to lose it faster and keep it off for longer (twice keeping it off for several years at a time). Today, I’m going to share the 12 most valuable tips I’ve discovered for how to lose weight and keep it off.

Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor. I’m simply sharing the weight loss strategies that worked best for me. Everyone is different. You may have health factors that differ from mine, so consult your doctor before making a change.

TIP #1 – Define Your Top Reasons For Losing Weight

Weight loss is difficult, especially when you’re first starting out. There will be times when you’re tempted to take a break or give up. Therefore, it’s critical to clarify your deeper motivations, so you can more easily reflect on them during moments of weakness.

With this in mind, ask yourself, “how will getting in shape positively impact your life or the lives of those around you?” I recommend you take out a piece of paper and list every possible answer. Then, circle the two or three that are most inspiring to you.

For example, my reasons for getting (and staying) in shape are (1) to serve as a role model for my kids, (2) to live a long and healthy life with my wife and family, and (3) to better enjoy playing sports like hockey with family and friends. Anytime I’m tempted to make a short-sighted decision, I remind myself of these three motivators.

It’s worth noting all three of my answers are based on connections with other people. They are centered around family and friends. This doesn’t have to be the case with your reasons, but consider that some of the most compelling motivators relate to connecting with other people.

TIP #2 – Food Selection Matters More Than Exercise

The most common mistake people make when trying to lose weight is focusing on exercise. Unfortunately, exercise is rarely enough to compensate for the unhealthy foods they’re already consuming. Worse, engaging in exercise tends to make people hungrier, causing them to eat even more.

The simple truth is that your eating habits have the most significant impact on whether you gain or lose weight. If you overeat unhealthy food, no amount of exercise will lead to weight loss. On the other hand, if you eat the right amount of healthy food, you can lose weight without regular exercise.

Every time I’ve lost weight, I primarily focused on the quality or quantity of the food I was eating rather than how much exercise I was getting.

This doesn’t mean you have to starve yourself or jump on the latest fad diet. The only point I’m making here is that food is the foundation of an effective weight loss strategy. Exercise plays a role in improving overall health, but food selection is the most critical factor in weight loss.

TIP #3 – Healthy Eating Is Easier With Consistency

One of the most challenging aspects of weight loss is the ongoing temptation to consume unhealthy foods. However, few people realize that unhealthy foods are most attractive when they’re a regular part of your diet.

Now, I don’t fully understand the science behind this, but the basic idea is that our bodies acclimate to the foods we routinely eat. Therefore, if you often consume foods that are high in sugar, your body will crave more of the same. Whereas, if you primarily consume healthy foods, sweets start to have less appeal. Some treats that were once appetizing can even taste uncomfortably sweet after taking a break from them.

With this in mind, I’ve found it’s much easier to make a complete transition to healthy eating rather than blending healthy and unhealthy options. That may sound somewhat extreme, but here are four benefits to making a hard switch.

Doing so helps your body fully acclimate to healthier options faster.

You’ll see quicker results which boosts your motivation to follow through.

You can more easily feel full even while eating less because healthier foods are typically more satisfying on a per-calorie basis.

Doing so eliminates the need to maintain willpower because there are no endless choices to be made. It’s one choice, made in advance, to fully commit to a healthy diet rather than second-guessing yourself every day.

Of course, the challenge is that switching to healthier foods can be difficult. With that in mind, the following two tips are geared toward making the transition easier.

TIP #4 – Allow Yourself To Eat Anything (Once A Month)

If you’re anything like me, the idea of forever saying “no” to all unhealthy food isn’t attractive. Regardless of the many health benefits, it can be discouraging to feel as though you’ll never again be able to enjoy some of your favorite treats.

The best solution I’ve found is to set aside one day each month to eat anything. And yes, that means you can gorge on all of your favorite treats, completely guilt-free, once every 30 days. Consider it the proverbial ‘light at the end of the tunnel.’ I schedule my eat-anything day for the 22nd of every month so it lines up with my birthday.

Now, I’ve found that I eagerly countdown to this special day for the first 2-4 months. During that time, I look forward to the opportunity to eat some of my favorite treats. However, after a few monthly cycles, the day becomes less attractive for two reasons. First, the treats I once loved are no longer as desirable. They’re still “good,” but they’re not as good as I once considered them. Second, unhealthy foods increasingly leave me feeling tired and unwell, so I start associating them with negative experiences.

Don’t get me wrong. I still look forward to my “eat-anything” day. However, it shifts from being a day where I try to consume all my favorite foods to one in which I’m much more selective, so I don’t overdo it. I view this as a win because (1) I still have the freedom to eat anything once a month, and (2) I begin to train my brain to no longer associate unhealthy foods with pleasure. Instead, I start to view such foods for what they are, an unhealthy disruption to an otherwise healthy and balanced life.

Another interesting detail is how my body responds to this approach. On the one hand, I’ve put on 10 pounds in less than 24 hours by gorging on unhealthy foods. However, those pounds are gone within a week. In fact, my weight loss continues as if the day never occurred. I don’t know why that happens, but I assume it’s a combination of losing temporary water weight (due to higher sodium consumption) and that my body has acclimated to needing fewer calories (thus retaining less when I overeat).

Of course, all of this is made possible by eating a much healthier diet for the rest of the month. So, let’s explore that further in the next tip.

TIP #5 – Choose A Healthy Diet That Is Sustainable

There are many options when it comes to dieting for weight loss. While many popular approaches can be effective, I recommend choosing an option that allows you to eat a variety of healthy foods because doing so helps with sustainability.

My preferred choice is to stick to whole foods that are as close to their “alive state” as possible. In other words, foods that have not been processed, refined or modified since being harvested. So, my diet consists of things like wild rice, quinoa, beef, chicken, salmon, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, bananas, whole grain bread, eggs, natural peanut butter, and many other similar foods.

These options are generally more satiating per calorie than refined alternatives. Plus, they are healthier for you because, as I understand it, the body is optimized to digest natural foods and put their nutrients to good use.

Now, you might prefer something like the Mediterranean diet. Alternatively, you might want to go keto, paleo, or low carb. You’ll have to find what works best for you. I recommend you do some quick research on Google to find an option that suits your preferences and then commit to sticking with it for the next 30 days.

TIP #6 – Track All The Food You Eat (At Least Temporarily)

All foods are not equal in terms of how they meet or exceed our dietary needs. There are often a handful of items that do little to satisfy our hunger while contributing a disproportionate share of our daily calories.

One way to take the guesswork out of food selection is to track everything you eat for 30 days. Smartphone apps like MyFitnessPal make it easy to log meals by scanning product barcodes or quickly searching for common foods by keyword. In most cases, you can log a meal in one or two minutes.

While this can be tedious, it’s not something you have to do forever. By tracking things for the first month, you’ll gather the data needed to get a rough sense of the caloric density of the foods you routinely eat. That way, you can quickly identify the worst offenders and the foods that are most satisfying while being least caloric.

If you’re serious about accelerating your weight loss, I recommend a daily target of 1500 calories. That may not seem like much, but with healthy eating, it’s enough for three full meals each day. Furthermore, you can increase your total number of daily calories by adding exercise into the mix.

MyFitnessPal makes it easy to track how much you’ve eaten, and you can also log exercise to see an adjusted total. For example, if you start with a baseline of 1500 calories and then burn 600 calories through active exercise, you can eat up to 2100 total calories for the day.

Every time I’ve achieved rapid weight loss, it involved meticulously tracking everything. That includes every meal, every snack, and every bit of active exercise. By doing so, I’m able to see what works, what doesn’t, and how I can improve things further.

TIP #7 – Momentum Is The Strongest Motivation

The hardest part of losing weight is getting started. That’s because momentum is everything. In the beginning, you have no momentum and no tangible proof that your efforts will pay off. Therefore, it’s challenging to get started. However, once the pounds start to come off, two mindset shifts take place.

You begin to realize that you can do it. Your confidence increases when you see undeniable proof of your ability to shed pounds.

You start to look for ways to build on your momentum. For example, you might become even more selective with your diet or introduce exercise to accelerate your results.

The thing I want to stress here is that the beginning really is the hardest part. I don’t say that to be discouraging—quite the opposite. If you know the beginning is the hard part, it’s just a matter of getting through that difficult stage. The first week is difficult, the next gets easier, and then, as you start to see the pounds come off, the results motivate you to stick with it and ramp up your efforts.

I’ve struggled through the first 10-15 days every time I’ve lost weight. And then, without fail, I found myself shedding pounds and wondering why it took me so long to get started. Successful weight loss is all about creating that initial momentum and then using early results as motivation to continue.

The lesson here is simple. Just get started. Don’t wait until the time is right or until you have the perfect plan. Instead, focus all of your initial energy on pushing through the first 10-15 days. Once you start seeing results, things get easier and easier.

TIP #8 – Make Healthy Options The Most Convenient

Our environment is highly influential when it comes to our eating habits. So, if unhealthy foods or snacks surround us, we will inevitably make poorer choices. Conversely, if healthy options are more convenient than unhealthy ones, it’s much easier to live a healthy lifestyle.

With this in mind, I recommend going out of your way to modify your environment to support healthier eating. The first place to start is at home. Begin by donating or giving away all unhealthy food options. This may seem extreme, but if high-sugar foods are nearby, all it takes is a moment of weakness to derail your weight loss progress.

Next, look for ways to make healthy options more convenient. My wife and I invested in glass meal prep containers a few years back. All of our food is now prepared in batches and portioned in advance. As a result, eating a healthy meal is as easy as grabbing a container from the fridge and microwaving it for 2-3 minutes. Fresh veggies are also cut in advance so they can be portioned on a plate while waiting for the microwave to finish. Likewise, fresh fruit and nuts are available for snacks.

Finally, look for ways to do the same with other environments, including the office and locations you frequently visit. Of course, you may not have the option to remove unhealthy foods from these spaces, but you can pack healthy snacks or bring healthy meals with you. That way, you’re prepared before hunger strikes.

Note: Avoid going grocery shopping on an empty stomach. It’s too easy to make poor food choices when we’re hungry. Some grocery stores offer the option to have food delivered directly to your home for a modest fee. I recommend taking advantage of this, so you can avoid browsing the store altogether.

TIP #9 – Buy Yourself Time In Moments Of Weakness

Everyone faces urges to make an exception regarding healthy eating. Unfortunately, all it takes is one poor choice to derail even the most well-intentioned plan. For example, choosing to eat one cookie can lead to another, then another, and pretty soon, our sense of momentum is gone, and we’ve lost the will to follow through.

The best way to handle sudden urges is to buy yourself time. You can do this by crafting simple rules based on the ‘If-Then’ formula. For example, “IF I’m tempted to eat an unhealthy snack, THEN I’ll wait 15 minutes before eating it,” or “IF I want to give up on my goal to lose weight, THEN I’ll wait 48 hours before making a change.”

Notice how both examples accept the underlying urge. They do this by providing the freedom to make a poor choice, so long as we’re willing to wait before doing so. This is critical because a rule that robs us of all choice is more likely to be disregarded in a moment of weakness. For example, a rule stating, “IF you want to eat a cookie, THEN just say no,” is likely to cause us to think, “well, I guess I’m going to have to break the rule because I want to eat this cookie right now.”

The ideal rule maintains our sense of autonomy while providing the time needed for temporary urges to pass. Of course, such a rule opens the door to making some poor choices. However, in practice, we’re less likely to do so because we have a chance to reflect on our reasons for wanting to lose weight.

Furthermore, whenever we successfully overcome an urge, we are reminded that cravings are only temporary, and thus we can further strengthen our resolve.

Note: You can craft ‘If-Then’ statements for any scenario that might throw you off your game. So, consider challenging situations or environments that have prevented you from losing weight in the past, and create rules for how you plan to navigate them.

TIP #10 – Find Someone To Keep You Accountable

In a moment of weakness, the human brain can rationalize almost anything. A few years ago, I found myself trying to come up with a reason why eating ice cream every day might somehow be “worth it.” While I knew an ice cream eating habit would probably shorten my life and reduce the quality of my remaining years, I tried to rationalize it.

Of course, as I was having these thoughts, all I really wanted was a reason to eat some ice cream. So, I was trying to convince myself that maybe ice cream (and other treats) are what makes life worth living. It wasn’t a great argument, but I didn’t need it to be. I just needed a reason to feel okay about making a poor choice.

Fortunately, my commitment was built on more than willpower alone. I had shared my goal with someone else, and most important of all, I committed to reporting my progress to them weekly. So, while there were moments when I was close to letting myself down, I wasn’t willing to admit defeat to someone else.

This brings up an important point. We are social beings. While we’re capable of great things on our own, we can achieve far more when accountable to others. That’s one reason why programs like AA rely on a buddy system.

With this in mind, I strongly encourage you to seek outside accountability. Find a friend, a family member, a paid trainer, or a coach willing to help. The most critical thing is that you can be completely honest with them and that you value their opinion of you.

Regarding my accountability, I check in weekly to report my current weight, how things went over the previous week, and what I plan to do over the next week. Doing so gives me a chance to reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and what I can do better.

Plus, I have one more reason to stick with the plan and do my best in a moment of weakness. This form of accountability has saved me from making many short-sighted decisions that I would have later regretted.

TIP #11 – Weight Isn’t Everything (Consider Other Metrics)

Depending on your goals, weight may not be the best metric for measuring your progress. It’s great if your primary focus is losing considerable weight. However, as you get close to your ideal size, it’s no longer the best way to track positive change.

You’ve likely heard that muscle is heavier than fat. It’s more accurate to say that muscle is more dense than fat. The result is that it’s possible to be putting on weight in the form of muscle, even as you lose fat and slim down. Conversely, you can also lose weight in the form of muscle loss while retaining the same amount of fat.

The problem, of course, is that muscle loss isn’t the same as fat loss. So, even if you are okay with losing muscle mass, you can end up “losing weight” without eliminating body fat. So, you might be wondering, “what is a better way to measure your progress?”

One great alternative is a Skinfold Body Fat Caliper. You can buy one for about $7 and use it to track body fat by “pinching” your skin and measuring its thickness. Another option is to use a measuring tape to keep track of specific areas of your body, such as the circumference of your waist, chest, or thighs.

I recommend combining both methods if you’re trying to lose fat while adding muscle. The caliper makes it easy to track overall fat loss, while the measuring tape can track an increase in chest, bicep, or thigh muscle size.

To be clear, a traditional scale is easier and more psychologically rewarding if you’re just aiming to lose considerable weight. That’s because it’s more exciting to watch ten, twenty, or thirty pounds come off the scale than to see the body fat caliper move from 25mm to 12mm. However, once you get close to your ideal size, weight becomes less useful as a metric, so it’s best to switch or combine methods at that point.

TIP #12 – Keep The Weight Off By Creating A Tripwire

Unfortunately, there is a big difference between losing weight and keeping it off.

As covered earlier, weight loss is largely driven by momentum. There is a clear goal, an easy way to track progress, and most importantly, a well-defined end in sight. Therefore, the greatest challenge is just getting started.

Keeping weight off is very different. There is no goal to be reached. Instead, success is measured by maintaining the new status quo. Furthermore, there is no endpoint, as the task is never complete. As a result, keeping the weight off is far less rewarding.

Meanwhile, the temptation to eat unhealthy foods can return with a vengeance. That’s because, once you’ve lost weight, you realize how easily you could do it again. Furthermore, there is a sense that you deserve treats for having reached such a big milestone. And, even if you don’t feel like that today, it’s a feeling that can easily creep up on you over time.

Now, of course, there are things we can (and should) do to keep the weight off. We’ve covered many practical tips, including making healthy foods more convenient, adding outside accountability, and more. However, it’s also critical to acknowledge that life isn’t always easy or predictable. There will be disruptions in your future that make it more challenging to maintain a healthy lifestyle over time.

With all of this in mind, I recommend you create a tripwire that alerts you to the need to make an immediate change. This involves defining a weight or size that is unacceptable to you, at which point you must return to weight-loss mode. Without this tripwire, it’s easy to let things get far worse, making a recovery more difficult.

My tripwire is defined as 10 pounds (or about 6%) above my ideal weight. I only react if my weight exceeds that target for two consecutive weekly weigh-ins to account for minor fluctuations. And, because I continue to report my weight to someone every Monday morning, I have a built-in mechanism for gathering this data.

I strongly recommend you define a tripwire even before you reach your goal. Don’t wait for things to slip because it’s much harder to be objective as your resolve weakens. And, be sure to maintain the habit of tracking data in a reliable way, so you can act on it.

How To Start Losing Weight Today

We’ve covered a lot of information in this article. You can take action now by defining your top 2-3 motivations for losing weight, as covered in tip #1. That is the most critical step because it will bring clarity and purpose to your goal.

Next, act on the advice from tips #2-7 by choosing a healthy diet, marking your “eat-anything” day into the calendar (30 days from now), and installing an app like MyFitnessPal to track the foods you’re eating.

After that, you can review the remaining tips to make healthier foods more convenient, establish “If-Then” rules to buy time in moments of weakness, and find someone to provide you with outside accountability. Lastly, please share your goals and progress with me by commenting on my how to lose weight fast and keep it off video on YouTube.
There is something special about reading a great fiction book! While about 90% of my reading is geared towards non-fiction, I like to mix things up from time to time by diving into a compelling novel. So, I thought it would be fun to share my top 5 fiction books of all time, plus some bonus recommendations at the end of the list.

Daemon by Daniel Suarez

This is a techno-thriller that was first published back in 2006. The word “daemon” is a computer term that refers to “a program that runs continuously in the background, performing operations at predefined times or in response to certain events.” It can be thought of as a very basic form of artificial intelligence.

Now, while the book’s narrative is built on a foundation of “future technology,” the story continues to hold up well today. Naturally, there are parts of the story that feel dated at times, but it’s a must-read and is easily my favorite fiction book of all time.

Without spoiling the story, the basic premise is that a dying game designer builds a computer program (a “daemon”) designed to upend society by turning the entire world into a giant game, recruiting human players to do its bidding along the way.

Note: There are sections of the book that are inappropriate for young children or sensitive readers, so I only recommend this for a more mature audience.

Daemon is available from Amazon and Apple Books.

2. RECURSION by Blake Crouch

Recursion by Blake Crouch Book Cover

This is a fast-paced science fiction thriller. The story opens with Barry Sutton, a New York City cop investigating a phenomenon called ‘False Memory Syndrome.’ It causes people to develop memories of a life they never lived.

The cause of these experiences is wild and serves as the foundation for a story that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. I don’t want to spoil the twists by going into more detail, but this is a must-read if you enjoy mind-bending science fiction.

Recursion is available from Amazon and Apple Books.

3. FREEDOMTM by Daniel Suarez

Freedom by Daniel Suarez

This is the must-read sequel to Daemon, the first book on the list. While that story was incredible as a stand-alone read, this follow-up book made it even better by adding an unexpected twist. Without spoiling things, this book completely changed the way I thought about the original while offering up a powerful story of its own.

If you are interested in artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and other futuristic technologies, you need to read both Daemon and Freedom by Daniel Suarez. They present an entertaining vision of how technology could change the world.

Freedom TM is available from Amazon and Apple Books.

4. THE MARTIAN by Andy Weir

The Martian by Andy Weir

This is a science fiction thriller that went mainstream after the story was adapted into a movie featuring Matt Damon. I found the book compelling and enjoyed the dry humor throughout. The basic plot has the main character attempting to survive on Mars after his team was forced to evacuate their mission, leaving him behind.

Now, I know it’s cliche to say this, but I believe the book is much better than the movie, and I think there are two reasons why this is often true. First, books often provide a deeper perspective into their characters because they can more easily relay someone’s thoughts and emotions. Second, while movies are visually rich, books are able to draw more attention to certain details in a scene that might otherwise be missed. Plus, they leverage the reader’s imagination.

Anyway, it’s a great book and one I highly recommend you read. It’s inspirational, educational, and entertaining at the same time.

The Martian is available from Amazon and Apple Books.

5. TERMINAL RAGE by A.M. Khalifa

Terminal Rage by Am Khalifa

This is a thriller that is less well-known than some of the other books on this list. It opens with a classic hostage negotiation story but has some wild and unexpected twists that make for a really great read. In some ways, it has a similar feel to two of my all-time favorite movies, The Game and The Usual Suspects. In fact, the official description of the book draws a comparison between the villain in the story and Keyser Söze from The Usual Suspects.

If you’re looking for an entertaining read with interesting twists and turns, consider reading Terminal Rage by A.M. Khalifa.

Terminal Rage is available from Amazon.

Bonus Fiction Recommendations

In addition to the books on this list, I’d like to quickly list off some other great fiction series, books, and authors worth checking out, including The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (3 books by Stieg Larsson), The Mitch Rapp novels (20 books from Vince Flynn and Kyle Mills), The Will Robie series (5 books by David Baldacci), The Terminal List series (5 books by Jack Carr), many books by Gregg Hurwitz (which are not in a series, but are generally great reads), and other books from authors Daniel Suarez and Blake Crouch.

Range by David Epstein

Many parents believe the key to success in life is to specialize early. They try to help their kids get a head start by identifying a promising opportunity and then focusing all their time and effort on developing relevant skills. For them, the idea of changing from one opportunity to another is associated with wasting time and effort.

Range by David Epstein is about the many benefits of diverse life experiences. It explains how engaging in a “sampling period” prior to specialization helps kids identify attractive opportunities, develop problem-solving skills, and boost their overall creativity. Needless to say, each of these things can be beneficial for raising young entrepreneurs.

Range is available from Amazon and Apple Books. If you want to learn more before picking up a copy, check out my Range book summary.

There has never been an easier time to find answers to common everyday questions. However, much of the life of an entrepreneur is about discovering powerful questions that nobody else is asking or answering. Such questions can serve as the spark for a new product, service, or an entire business.

A More Beautiful Question by Warren Berger is about the power of asking better and more thought-provoking questions. It provides tips for digging beneath the surface of a challenge or opportunity to discover new possibilities.
People often set artificial limitations on their skills and abilities. For example, deep down, they may believe that we will never be good at creative writing, public speaking, or leading other people. In some cases, they reach these conclusions based on one or two initial attempts that didn’t go as planned or ended in a negative experience.

Mindset by Carol S. Dweck is about how to unlock a child’s full potential by helping them maintain a growth mindset. So, rather than assuming their abilities are static or fixed, they can discover their capacity to unlock new skills and capabilities through focused effort. Naturally, this approach can better prepare them for the unpredictable life of an entrepreneur.

Some people seem to make better use of their abilities and opportunities in life. They work hard, put in extra effort, and find ways to overcome complex challenges. Naturally, this begs the question, “what causes some people to push themselves further while others fall short of their full potential?”

Grit by Angela Duckworth explains how top performers are driven by a unique blend of passion and perseverance. It goes on to explain how, as parents, we can help our kids develop these traits at various stages of their life. In doing so, we can increase the odds that they will realize their full potential and follow through on their life goals.

Success in life comes down to a combination of luck and hard work. However, luck is often seen as a blind and uncontrollable factor in our lives. We either have, or we don’t. As a result, it can be tempting to either spend our time waiting for luck to strike or to assume it never will.

The Serendipity Mindset by Christian Busch is about the art and science of creating good luck. It’s a practical guide to setting up the right conditions for serendipity to occur and being ready to capitalize on it. So, while we cannot control specific outcomes for our children, we can help them create the conditions for exciting opportunities to appear and ensure they are ready to act on them.

While the life of an entrepreneur is often characterized as being chaotic, their success is often aided by strong personal habits. For example, setting aside time for reading, writing, or journaling. These kinds of routines provide a sense of structure in an otherwise unstructured life, and they effectively automate valuable activities.

Many people believe the key to success is to specialize early. They seek to get a head start in life by identifying a promising opportunity and then focusing all their time and effort on mastering relevant skills. For them, the idea of changing interests, hobbies, or careers is associated with wasting time and effort.

Range by David Epstein is about the many benefits of diverse life experiences. It explains how engaging in a “sampling period” prior to specialization improves match quality, enhances our ability to solve complex problems, and boosts our creativity. It’s a must-read for anyone wanting to unlock greater opportunities for success in life.

So, let’s explore three of my favorite insights from the book.

1. Early Specialization Is Vastly Overrated

As the economy grows in complexity, there is an increasing need for workers with finely tuned skills, knowledge, and expertise. Unfortunately, many people mistakenly assume that the best way to compete in this environment is to specialize as early as possible.

This view seems to be supported by stories of world-class performers, like Tiger Woods, who benefited from early specialization. He committed to a career path at a young age and was highly rewarded for doing so. However, it’s only when we consider the full implications of this strategy that we become aware of the many drawbacks.

Early specialization is built on the assumption that (a) the selected skill will remain valuable in the future, (b) you will be able to sustain the passion needed to outperform others, and (c) technological advancement won’t make your abilities obsolete.

While early specialization can pay off in rare circumstances, it’s not the safe or smart choice many people believe it to be. Instead, it’s a high-risk gamble in which you have very little control over the outcome. And, as with so many gambles, we tend only to hear stories about those who succeeded against the odds.

For every Tiger Woods-like success story, there are many people who wasted years of their life honing a highly specialized skill with little to show for it. They may have developed a strong work ethic along the way, but they lack the diverse life experiences needed to identify and transition to a more promising opportunity.

2. Diverse Life Experiences Are Hugely Beneficial

Many people are in a hurry to figure out where they’re headed in life. As a result, they view time spent exploring unrelated options as wasteful wandering. However, there are many advantages to embracing a lengthy “sampling period” prior to specialization, as well as investing in diverse life experiences. Let’s explore six examples.

1. Identifying Promising Career Possibilities

We cannot identify attractive hobbies or careers by merely reviewing a list of options. Instead, we must get out into the world and participate in a range of activities to discover those that are a fit for us. This is critical because it’s much easier and more enjoyable to take on pursuits that match our passions, interests, and natural tendencies.

Economists use the term “match quality” to describe the degree of fit between the work someone does and who they are—their abilities and proclivities. Students who chose a specialty earlier compiled more skills in preparation for gainful employment. However, studies showed that increased match quality outweighs the advantages of having more skills. Learning stuff was less important than learning about oneself.

Those who engaged in a sampling period were quick to catch up to the productivity of early specializers. Furthermore, those that specialized too early were more likely to switch fields after college or after beginning a career, even though they had more disincentive to switch, having focused on their field for a longer period.

The key then is to specialize later in life by engaging in an extended sampling period to identify the work that is most appealing to you. That way, you’re more likely to invest the time, energy, and effort required to do well in the field.

2. Solving New Or Complex Problems

The methods used to solve problems within specific domains, like performing music, participating in gymnastics, or playing chess, are very different from those needed in other areas. Real-life is rarely so formulaic or rules bound. We don’t always get useful feedback, and the metrics by which we measure success aren’t always clear.

Therefore, it’s critical to distinguish between “kind” and “wicked” learning environments, as defined by psychologist Robin Hogarth. Kind learning environments have patterns that repeat over and over, and feedback is extremely accurate and usually very rapid. If you play a wrong musical note or make a poor chess move, the feedback is clear, and there are well-established ways to improve.

When it comes to wicked learning environments, the rules of the game are often unclear or incomplete, there may or may not be repetitive patterns, and feedback is often delayed, inaccurate, or both. In particularly wicked domains, experience will often reinforce the wrong response. In a famous example, a physician was highly confident in his ability to diagnose typhoid fever. Later it was determined that his method was directly responsible for spreading the disease, which explains his unique ability to yield a positive diagnosis even before the patient displayed symptoms.

The key to overcoming wicked problems is to develop broad life experience. In doing so, we increase our capacity for conceptual reasoning, connecting ideas, and working across contexts. Thus, when we face a difficult challenge, we’re able to combine ideas and insights from unrelated domains to come up with novel solutions.

As human beings, our most significant advantage over artificial intelligence is the ability to integrate broad knowledge. The best-paying jobs of the future are likely to be given to those who can use this ability to solve unexpected challenges more effectively.

3. Transferring Knowledge Across Domains

One of the most common problems in education is the inability to transfer knowledge from one context to another. People often struggle to take something they learned in one context, perhaps in a classroom, and apply it in another context, like the real world. As a result, it’s common for people to master a skill in one domain yet utterly fail to appreciate how it can be applied to other situations.

The problem of transfer tends to be greatest when our knowledge is highly specialized or otherwise limited. Thus, one way to combat the issue of transfer is to have a broader set of life experiences on which to develop mental models for common patterns. Doing so expands our ability to reason by analogy and think more abstractly, which helps us use knowledge across unrelated contexts.

In short, breadth of training predicts breadth of transfer. The more contexts in which something is learned or reinforced, the more the learner creates abstract models, and the less they rely on any particular example or context to apply what they’ve learned.

4. Doing More Creative And Novel Work

Much of what we’ve covered in regards to problem-solving and knowledge transfer also applies to creativity. That’s because much of what people describe as creativity is simply the mating of ideas that were previously considered unrelated. By combining insights or ideas from one context to another, we can produce more creative results.

Studies show that technological inventors increased the creativity of their work by accumulating experience in different domains. They did so by proactively sacrificing a bit of depth in favor of increased breadth. There was a nearly identical finding in a study of artistic creators. Meanwhile, those who did not make a creative contribution to their field lacked aesthetic interests outside their narrow area.

5. Breaking Through Skill Ceilings

There is only so much that can be gained by drilling or applying the same skills over and over again. However, diverse or unrelated experiences can cause us to think differently by bringing a fresh perspective to an otherwise repetitive process. As a result, we can break through skill ceilings and improve our abilities in unexpected ways.

For example, an amateur ice hockey player who plays pool might consider creative ways to pass the puck off the end boards. Alternatively, a hockey player with soccer experience may develop creative ways to control the puck with their skates. In either case, focusing exclusively on hockey-related drills may not uncover these unexpected opportunities unless or until professional players discover them through a similar process and model them as modern advancements in the sport.

Just as creativity is based on the mating of ideas, our overall skill can be expanded by borrowing techniques, concepts, and strategies from other disciplines. Thus, if you hit a perceived skill ceiling, it’s often helpful to mix things up by broadening your horizons.

6. Increasing Career Flexibility And Adaptability

Long gone are the days when people would choose a single career and stick with it for the duration of their working life. Today people switch roles for various reasons, including changes in the industry, changes in their interests, or even a shift in available opportunities. Thus, it’s helpful to be prepared for this possibility.

One of the most significant benefits of broad experience is the flexibility it provides. By avoiding the urge to specialize early, you have the opportunity to try many things and get comfortable in a wide variety of situations. Even when you later specialize in a promising career, you still retain the option to change things up if needed.

This is important because there is no way to predict which careers will remain relevant for years or even decades to come. By specializing late, you gather more information on which to base your career choice, and, in many cases, you’ll discover compelling alternatives. If your first pick doesn’t work out, you can shift your focus to another role that seems like an equally strong fit for you.

3. It’s Never Too Late To Pursue Something New

When asked to sum up the message of the book in a single sentence of advice, the author said, “Don’t feel behind.” It’s never too late to try something new. So long as you’re taking on interesting life challenges, you will continue to upgrade your toolkit, bolster your creativity, and make new connections.

The fact is, we aren’t all headed towards the same finish line. Furthermore, we don’t even have a clear sense of our own “finish line” at any given moment. Thus, we cannot know which experiences will be most relevant to future opportunities or challenges. With this in mind, it’s beneficial to continue to broaden our horizons and try new things.

The book contains countless examples of how late specialists often did as well, or even better, than early specialists in the same field. By engaging in a sampling period prior to specialization, we can achieve higher match quality, bolster our problem-solving abilities, enhance our creativity, and improve the way we transfer knowledge from one domain to another. All of this gives us a competitive advantage that is difficult or even impossible to emulate through early specialization alone.

Avoid the trap of treating unrelated or disconnected experiences as a waste. Instead, embrace every step of the journey as a valuable asset. You never know which insight or experience will play a critical role in your future success.

One of the most rewarding aspects of life is developing new skills or abilities.

Whether you want to pursue a fun hobby, upgrade your work skills, or change careers entirely, learning something new can be challenging and fulfilling.

Of course, success is never guaranteed. Many people eventually give up on their goals due to unforeseen challenges, obstacles, or setbacks. And to make matters worse, the negative experience can cause them to avoid future opportunities for growth.

Fortunately, learning is a skill like any other. By adopting best practices and avoiding common mistakes, we can improve our ability to acquire new skills. So, today, we’re going to explore seven proven tips for learning a new skill quickly and effectively.

Tip #1: Narrow The Scope To Accelerate Progress

The first priority is getting clear about exactly what you plan to learn.

For example, if you’ve decided to learn a new language, it’s important to be specific about why that skill is important and how you intend to use it. Ask yourself, can you get away with simply speaking the language? Is it necessary to learn how to read and write, or can that come later?

A common mistake is taking on too much at once in the name of “efficiency.”

In the case of learning a language, it’s considerably more challenging to pursue reading, writing, and speaking at the same time. It might seem like a minor increase in effort to combine them into one step, but the added complexity is far more likely to kill your momentum and cause you to quit.

So, regardless of your goal, it’s critical to find ways to narrow the scope.

It’s easier to create progress, build momentum, and ultimately achieve success when you keep things simple. Later, after you have completed your initial goal, you always have the option to layer on related skills and abilities. For example, once you can speak a language, that knowledge is very helpful for developing the ability to read and write.

Tip #2: Prioritize Direct Experience Early And Often

A critical aspect of skill development is gaining experience in the situation or context that you plan to apply the skill.

If you want to learn to code mobile apps, find a way to start working directly on simple apps as early as possible. If you want to learn a sport like basketball, aim to join a pickup game sooner rather than later. If you want to speak a new language, look for opportunities to engage in basic conversations with a native speaker.

This direct approach is in stark contrast to how many things are taught today.

Much of what people learn in classrooms or online courses is abstracted away from real-world situations. Students study facts, concepts, and other information without having a practical way to use what they’ve learned. Likewise, new skills are often taught in simplified, isolated environments.

As Ultralearning author Scott H. Young explains,

“…directly learning the thing we want feels too uncomfortable, boring, or frustrating, so we settle for some book, lecture, or app, hoping it will eventually make us better at the real thing.”

Unfortunately, this approach fails to address one of the most significant challenges in personal development, which is the problem of “transfer.” Transfer is what happens when you learn something in one context, such as shooting a basketball in a driveway, and then use it in another context, such as playing a real game.

The problem is that experience in one context often fails to translate well into another. It’s one thing for a basketball player to make shot after shot in a controlled, familiar environment. It’s another to take a similar shot in a new environment, in the face of a strong defender, after receiving an awkward pass, while being tired from running up and down the court.

A great way to avoid the problem of transfer is to participate in the goal activity as early and as often as possible. Rather than focusing exclusively on isolated skill-building, look for opportunities to “get in the game” on a regular basis. This kind of direct experience makes it easier to identify skills worth practicing while also providing an environment to apply those skills as they are developed.

Note: This may not be an option for every pursuit. Some activities may be too complex, difficult, or dangerous to dive right into. However, the ultimate goal should be to close this gap as quickly as possible. That way, you can apply what you are learning and avoid falling into the trap of focusing exclusively on isolated practice.

Tip #3: Address Weaknesses Through Focused Practice

As you gain direct experience, you will inevitably run into challenges or setbacks that cannot be addressed with your current abilities.

For example, when learning a language, you might start by using flashcards to memorize basic conversational phrases. Then, when conversing with a native speaker to gain practical experience, you may discover that some of the phrases are not commonly used. Furthermore, you may encounter a few new phrases. While this can be frustrating, such experiences provide a clear direction for further improvement.

Your next practice session might involve removing uncommon words from your flashcards and adding new phrases in anticipation of the next conversation with a native speaker.

Scott H. Young calls this the “direct-then-drill” approach. Direct experience provides the foundation for further study. But, once a weakness has been identified, it’s time to “drill” the relevant skills or knowledge in focused practice sessions.

At every step along the way, it’s essential to return to the goal activity to apply what has been learned and get a refined sense of what to work on next. This may seem obvious to some, but it’s easy to fall into the trap of focusing entirely on isolated practice, mistakenly assuming it’s the fastest way to improve.

However, isolated practice needs to be balanced out with integrated learning.

The “direct-then-drill” approach can be applied to almost any pursuit, such as starting a business, writing a book, or even learning an instrument. In each case, the foundation is the same. Everything begins by finding the most direct opportunity to engage in the goal activity. Then, as setbacks or challenges arise, it’s time to engage in purposeful practice to develop or improve skills that seem helpful along the way.

Tip #4: Seek Out Qualified, Actionable Feedback

Regardless of what you are seeking to learn, feedback plays a critical role. It can make all the difference in catching mistakes early, adopting best practices, and avoiding stalled progress. Therefore, it is essential that you create situations where your progress can be routinely observed by a qualified teacher, mentor, or coach.

Now, it’s worth noting that not all feedback is helpful or productive. Blind praise or sharp criticism, such as “you’re smart” or “you’re lazy,” is most often harmful. That’s because it’s directed at you as a person rather than your performance.

The best feedback is that which addresses current mistakes and guides future action. This kind of feedback should detail what you are doing wrong and how to fix it. More often than not, this requires a qualified coach or teacher with deep subject matter expertise and a history of successfully guiding others through the same process.

Of course, direct experience provides some level of feedback as well. However, external input from a coach will allow for much more rapid advancement. Therefore, if you are serious about making progress, it’s best to put yourself in situations where you can receive such feedback on a regular basis.

Beyond simple corrective feedback, another powerful resource is what Scott H. Young defines as “metafeedback.” As he explains,

“This kind of feedback isn’t about your performance but about evaluating the overall success of the strategy you’re using to learn.”

In other words, rather than identifying specific mistakes you may be making, this feedback addresses the overarching approach you’re using to learn. For example, learning a new language using a mobile app may be inferior to using flashcards.

Naturally, there will be situations where it’s impossible to find subject matter experts. Emerging hobbies or interests may be so new as to not yet have qualified teachers or coaches. In such situations, it can be beneficial to gather feedback from non-experts.

As a general rule, it’s easier for an outside observer to accurately assess mistakes or areas for improvement. But, with that said, their suggestions for correcting the mistakes should always be taken with a grain of salt because it’s easier for non-experts to identify problems than to come up with correct solutions.

Tip #5: Build On The Experience Of Top Experts

Some pursuits can and should be more structured than others.

For example, when it comes to learning to play piano at an expert level, there is a clear sense of the order in which techniques and concepts should be introduced. The same is true of many other well-understood pursuits, such as playing professional sports, mastering games like chess, or preparing for Olympic-level competitions.

In such cases, time has allowed for learning methods to be refined over multiple generations. Experienced coaches can then help students build on what worked in the past, avoid common mistakes, and push things to the next level. This is one reason why experts in many domains continually outperform the previous generation. The training methods are constantly being improved, which allows students to perform better.

With that said, many pursuits lack history or structure. In such cases, it’s best to study the top experts or best performers and determine what they have done to become so effective. Dig deep and seek to learn as much as possible about their life experience, related hobbies, or other factors that may have played a role in their success. Then use what you have learned to develop training methods for reproducing their results.

Tip #6: Understand The Fundamentals Deeply

Another key to effective learning is understanding the basics on a deep level.

This often involves digging beneath best practices and surface knowledge to better understand how and why things work the way they do. In other words, instead of just memorizing rules-based processes for getting things done, seek to understand how the procedures work and why they were established in the first place.

When we understand something on a deep level, we can apply the knowledge to a wider variety of situations, recall details with greater accuracy, and learn related concepts faster.

Consider the difference between memorizing complex directions to several restaurants in a new city versus truly understanding the lay of the land. When someone has deep knowledge about a city, they don’t have to memorize turn-by-turn directions for every new destination they want to visit. Instead, they can link new destinations with existing knowledge, recall relevant landmarks, and add them to their mental map.

In my experience, many so-called “professionals” rely heavily on predefined processes or formulas to get things done. As a result, even minor changes in their workflow can be a cause for panic because they lack the deep knowledge required to adapt on the fly. To make matters worse, much of their experience isn’t transferable to a new job due to being built on processes and protocols that are highly situational.

To be clear, it’s crucial to adopt and follow best practices, especially when first starting to explore a new area of interest. However, as your knowledge deepens, you should avoid relying on processes or formulas as a crutch. Instead, seek to understand how things really work and why best practices were adopted in the first place.

Not only can this approach help you identify when a process is flawed or outdated, but it can also help you understand when it makes sense to break away from the rules and improvise to create superior results.

When in doubt, ask yourself questions like:

Why are things done that way?

Is that still the best approach today?

What else might work better?

Tip #7: Rely On Habits Instead Of Willpower

In my experience, well-designed habits provide the single greatest point of leverage for effective learning and positive change.

No amount of willpower or motivation can compete with the progress that results from consistent action over an extended period. As author James Clear explains,“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” Thus, it’s essential that we carve out time to focus on the things that matter most.

My favorite strategy for building new habits is to anchor them to existing routines. As social scientist BJ Fogg explains, “You already have a lot of reliable routines, and each of them can serve as an Action Prompt for a new habit.” He goes on to explain, “to create a new habit, you need to find what behavior it should come after.”

For example, you might choose to build a habit that occurs either after your morning shower, when you return home from work, or after cleaning up the dishes in the evening. The right choice will depend on various factors, but one crucial thing to consider is the frequency of the existing routine. If you want to develop a habit of writing for 30 minutes each day, for example, you’ll want to attach that habit to another routine that already takes place daily.

Another thing to consider is that certain parts of the day may be more predictable than others. Personally, I find it easier to add new habits to my morning routine, even if that means waking up a little earlier. My evening schedule is more prone to last-minute changes or unscheduled disruptions. So, with this in mind, consider the aspects of your routine that are more predictable on a daily basis. Then, look for ways to incorporate new habits within those windows of time.

If you’re interested in learning more about building positive habits or breaking bad ones, I recommend reading Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg or Atomic Habits by James Clear.
