Join me over the next several posts as I walk through the process of commissioning a custom work of art for yourself, a friend, or a family member.

On one of my website pages I have a form designed to give me a heads up for someone interested in working with me for a custom work of art. I discuss the idea of giving a custom artwork as a gift, payment methods, and the three steps to commissioning a custom art piece.

Three Easy Steps

STEP 1. Complete the Request for Custom Art form below and select submit:

STEP 2. You will be contacted to discuss project details, my current schedule and make your downpayment.

STEP 3. When completed you will be provided with a proof of the final artwork for your approval, pay the balance for the order and the completed artwork will be safely shipped to you by USPS or UPS.

Once someone has contacted me through the use of this form or by email, I contact them directly and we discuss what they're interested in accomplishing with the new art piece. We discuss some possible variations in the background and mediums to use and whether or not they have a hardfast deadline to meet.

Typically the client provides me with pictures of the subject, but often I do additional research to get more details, as well as additional ideas for the background setting for the artwork. I usually do several thumbnail sketches, about 3 by 4 inches in size, to get a feeling for the desired layout and composition of the artwork.

Then I create my initial sketch of the new piece directly on the chosen foundation. In the picture below, you can see the rough sketch created for my latest commissioned piece, a 1958 Ferrari.

In my next post I'll show some of the initial panting process as the picture progressed. Hope you've enjoyed learning more about the process of commissioning custom art work!

As I was preparing to contact Mr. Nens I began to think back about cars that had been in my family growing up and my first two cars and realized I had Ford fever in my background.

Our family's first car in my memory was a 1956 Ford Ranch Wagon. Living in Seattle, with relatives living in California and Minnesota, we spent a lot of summers taking family road trips to visit our relatives. Cheap vacations! Pay for the gas and live at the relatives once you arrive.

The most unique thing about this car was the paint job. My father was a car mechanic and painter and when the old metal flake paint jobs were first coming out, guess what my dad's first trial job was? You guessed it, the Copper Ranch Wagon soon was the first car on the street to have a gold metal flake hood.

Now that was pretty impressive in those days and of course became good advertising for the paint jobs my dad did on the side.

Here's a couple pictures of the car and me as a youngster in 1961:

June - Note Cards Winners

Thank you to everyone who signed up for the drawing to win a set of note cards.

Congratulations goes to Russ and Meg Clements of Tempe, AZ as they are the winners of this month's drawing.

Subscribe to the Newsletter to be included in next months drawing:

Subscribe to Newsletter

Check out the color art of Cindy Davis!

Ran into this artist on Twitter. He had raced the car at the Avilla, Indiana dragstrip for several years so of course it had special memories to him. The painting was done in acrylics and is available as an open and limited edition print.

In an even more unique twist, the groom turned around and comissioned me to complete a pen and ink drawing of his 1967 Olds 442 and his best man's 1967 Camaro to be used as a gift for his best man. These are definitely good buddies, sharing some great memories together at the dragstrip.

Click the following link to view or order this print: "Olds 442 - Kickin It"

Click the following link to view or order this print: "1995 - End of an Era"

Website Updates - Revised Artist Statement

Updated my artist statement and about pages on my website. I've had the Open Edition prints made at a local print shop. They came out great and will be posted at http://www.rasart.com/ and http://www.rickspooner.com/ soon. They will sell for around $30 per print and will be hand signed by the artist.

Now I'm working with a "giclee" art printer to have the Limited Edition prints done also. These will be produced in two different sizes. One set will be printed on 16 X 20 inch paper, with an 11 X 14 inch image size. The second set will be printed on 20 X 24 inch paper, with an 16 X 20 inch image size. These will sell for around $85 to $120 respectively and will be nad signed and numbered by the artist, me.

The original painting was done on illustration board in acrylics, with a 16 X 20 inch image size, so the larger print will be the same size as the orginal artwork. The official release will be announced through PRWEB. Pre release orders will be accepted at rasart@msn.com .

Corvette Painting Update!

Here I am about 17.5 hours into the painting and the details are starting to come together.

Since the last posting I've added details into the following areas: grill, wheel rims, moon, decorative grid below the Stingray name. The process is becoming more popular amongst modern day artists who regularly paint in digital format; hence there is no “original” artwork as such. It can also prove very beneficial to artists working on a tight budget, as they are able to reprint copies of the digital original on demand hence less wastage. The Giclee style is also being used to produce enhanced prints of older original artwork, which is digitally scanned as a starting point of the process.

The beauty of Giclee art is the fact that any digital artwork can be reproduced on a number of different media, including canvas and specialist papers giving a very professional look. The quality of today’s printers is such that rather than the old dot patterns the flow of coloring and texture is very smooth, offering an excellent finish.

While the Giclee procedure can be transferred to any style and format of fine art, it has become particularly prevalent in the tropical regions, with Hawaiian Giclee prints becoming much sort after in the art world. While initially the Giclee format had received a luke warm welcome from the more traditional of the art world, it has now taken a firm place as a modern day art form. Galleries are now accepting Giclee artwork into their shows, and the collectors are showing a real interest, resulting in the emergence of a Giclee market place.

In an art world often set against any new styles or procedures, which go against the traditional methods, Giclee is starting to make a big name for itself and is becoming more and more popular. This really is a case of traditional art embracing modern technology.

Dwayne Goerges is the web site editor for Tropical Fine Art Giclee and Custom Forged Knives in Northern California.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Dwayne_Goerges

Current Project - 1972 Corvette

Here's a preview of my current project. This is a 1972 Corvette in a setting of a moonlit night with the moon's reflection shimmering across the water and leading up to the main focus of the picture, the car itself.

At this point, I have about 11 hours of painting time into the picture so far. The painting, which is 16 X 20 inches, wil have about 30 to40 hours total time put into it before it is completed. The painting is being done in acrylics. To help slow the drying time of the painting, I use a special medium and keep my palette in a sealable plastic bag, with a wet sponge, in between painting sessions.

I still need to complete a lot of details in the car and add some clouds and stars to the background before the picture will be done. I'm considering adding some clothes laying around to the side of the car and possibly a couple of silhouttes in the water to make it look like a couple has made a spontaneous stop at the lake and decided to jump in a go skinny dipping. If you have an opinion you'd like to share about that idea, please post a comment and take part in helping to mold the final outcome of this painting.

When completed, this picture will be made into art prints. I usually have 11 X 14 inch open edition prints made of my paintings (go to http://www.rasart.com/ to see curren prints available) and two sizes of Limited Edition prints. Two hundred fifty at 16 X 20 inches and two hundred fifty at 20 X 24 inches. These retail at $30, $85, and $120 respsectively. If interested in signing up for a pre-release order you may contact me through the blog or at RASart@msn.com.

Stop back and check out the progress on this painting. I will post again in about two weeks with an update. Hope to hear from lots of you regarding this latest painting! You can see a picture of my current project on the drafting table, a 1973 Corvette, in the setting of a "blue moon" over the lake. Stay tuned for my next post, which will give more information about that project.

To the left of the drafting board is my reference library which contains lots of instructional books on art and running an art business. Currently I'm reading the book "How to Profit from the Art Print Market" by Barney Davey. Mr Davey has a ton of experience in this field from working many years at Decor magazine. Highly recommended if you are an artist looking for ways to enhance your art business through the sale of art prints. You can check out his website at http://www.barneydavey.com/ where he lists his book, a newsletter, and other resources for marketing art.
To the right of the room is a series of ardmores with additional shelves added to store my art supplies and the forty plus 11 x 14 inch art prints which are sold online at http://www.rasart.com/ . I'm working to getter better orginized for storing my original pen and ink drawings and getting them scanned or photographed so they'll be available in an electronic format for going to the printers in the future.

Hope you've enjoyed the tour of the studio! Send a comment if you have any questions about my artwork, studio, or techniques.

Thanks, Rick

Start Your Engines - my first post

So I'm finally biting the bullet and getting started on my blogging adventure. I've been considering starting this blog for sometime now, but just haven't disciplined myself enough to sit down and get started. Here goes!

What do I want my blog to accomplish you might ask? I hope to share elements of the artistic process with those interested in art and especially automotive art. Part of that will include sharing photos of current projects I'm working on or discussing past projects which have already been completed, but may have an interesting story behind them. I also plan to include tips about framing your art which will prove helpful if you are an art buyer and sharing information that would be of interest to other artists looking to promote their art in the online venues.

Hope you enjoy the blog. Please let me know if you have any specific questions about my art which can be viewed or purchased at http://www.rasart.com/ and I will add my response to the blog.

Rick
