I don’t know about others. But ever since I started to update my Facebook status actively (almost daily), I seldom update my blog any more. Anyone share such same experience with me?

You may think I have become lazy to write articles. You may think I have taken easy way out by microblogging using Facebook isntead. But I suspect I’m not the only one. I venture to say that microblogging using Facebook and Twitter has won over the heart of some conventional bloggers like me.

Now I suppose conventional blogging is not for everyone. Not too many can write, want to write, care to write, or have the time to write. Some of us took up blogging a few years ago due to reasons such as peer pressure, or it was the “in” thing to do at that time.

But as time goes on, we start to find out who can blog, and who better not waste time blogging. You may call the blogs of former as high quality blogs, or the latter low quality blogs. But I prefer to think that blogging is simply not the cup of tea for these latter group of people.

Some of them blog because they have a need to express themselves. But it can take too much time sitting in front of computer to write, and or too much stress to think what to write. But now with microblogging, it serves their need to express perfectly. They can just shout anytime they have something to express!

I’m talking about the bloggers who have “expressive” need to express themselves. I’m not talking about other reasons for blogging such as to contribute to body of knowledge, to attract web site traffic, to promote a company, product or service, or to make blogging money.

Moreover, by microblogging we have ready pool of friends on social media who can read our status updates. We don’t need to worry about attracting search engine traffic to our conventional blogs. Well, not too many people know or care about search engines and online marketing.

But don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying blogs have no use any more. I’m saying microblogging has taken away some conventional bloggers like me who blog primarily to express and to shout.

And you are welcome to express and shout your comments below

I have been watching this video and am still deeply moved. It is one of the most watch-able commercials I have ever seen in life. Some of the acting may be too far fetched. But its message is profound.

Question – Why am I different from others?
Answer – Do you have to be like others?

Don’t seek to be like others! Everyone of us is unique and has our own destiny to realize in life!

From marketing point of view, the commercial is also great. Pantene shampoo is a functional product and has its conventional market of shampoo users. But now it seeks to cross over from functionality to emotional appeal. Instead of using logic to tell us why it is a better brand, it seeks to attack our emotion and win our heart over.

Not only will it persuade more people from the its traditional market to use the product, those who don’t use their kind of shampoo maybe bought over too. Who knows I might decide to buy Pantene for my family next time? Perhaps this is one of the blue ocean strategies to conquer a new market.

And the tagline is inspirational – You can shine!

By the way, I consider the Thai language very beautiful phonetically. It is a language I wish to learn if I had extra time.

I’m not a born leader. I often think I’m better off as an adviser to a leader, rather than being a leader myself. But there are situations in life which put us in the position of leadership. So I have no choice but to learn to lead as well.

In learning to be a leader, I subscribe to strength-based leadership, among other practices. It means to focus on other people’s strengths, instead of weaknesses, in leading and coaching them. Instead of spotting their mistakes, we try to spot their plus points and encourage them accordingly.

Since we will see what we focus on, so by strength-based leadership we will seek to discover and reward the good points in others. Hopefully, their confidence and morale will increase and will produce even better work and be better team members.

Generally speaking, it has worked out quite well so far. However, my trial is not without problems. But these are not problems with strength-based leadership. They are my problems.

In focusing on strengths, I tend to overlook their weaknesses. As a result, when a team member does not do his or her job well, I tend to brush it aside and not confront the member so that he or she can do better next time.

In focusing on strengths, I also tend to inflate a member’s ability. If I find someone capable of doing something, I am inclined to consider he or she good in other areas as well. However, such assumption can prove to be wrong. At least once recently.

Also, when a member really does something wrong, I tend to give him or her benefits of doubt. This maybe alright. But I even try to rationalize and explain away his or her mistake. Seems like I’m not facing the reality.

When I spot a member doing something obviously wrong, I also tend to avoid conflicts in order to maintain our relationship. I guess this is related to my tendency to be a nice guy. It may be OK for a short-term team or project. But it will not bring any benefit if we are together for long term, to the well being of both the team and the member.

I still want to adopt strength-based leadership in life, but perhaps with some adjustments and corrections. Any feedback?

I have recently helped conduct a survey on “Have You Got A Lady Boss?” I have promised to share what I personally think about a lady boss. So here it is.

On a social level, I find it easier and more comfortable dealing with girls than guys. I have more and closer female friends than guy friends. Normally you may see me associating with girls more than guys. I think this has something to do with my childhood upbringing.

But when it comes to working, I find it much more difficult dealing with a lady boss than a male boss. “Boss” here is not limited to workplace but also other settings such as a team leader working together for non-work purposes.

Perhaps it’s because the few lady bosses I have had in the past are all quite strong leaders, even stronger than many male leaders I have come across. They often have very high expectations out of me.

From personal experience, it has not been very pleasant experience working with lady bosses. But thanks to these lady bosses, I have learned much and corrected myself from the experience dealing with each and every of these strong personalities.

Personally, I prefer working with male boss. But I’m not in control of who will be assigned as my boss. Perhaps God gives me a difficult boss in order to train me up. So I should take whoever assigned to me as my leader.

I guess in future, women leadership will be very common, that perhaps one generation from now, such survey on lady boss is no longer meaningful any more.

It is a fact of life. We need to deal with anyone who come into our life. I guess the problem is more on “managing our boss”, rather than the lady bosses themselves.

Right after my secondary school, I joined one network marketing company. I managed to recruit over 40 downlines in my group. Within a few months I rose to the so-called Manager post.

We were trained for positive thinking. One compulsory reading we must have was Think & Grow Rich. We were trained to visualize success and think “if I think I can, I can”!

I believed in the “law of attraction”, though it may not be called this name at that time. I believed I could achieve anything I wanted, anything my mind focused on and attracted. At the age of 19, I thought I was at the top of the world.

But things did not turn out well:

My group collapsed. Many downlines migrated to another network marketing company.

The company also folded itself in a few years.

I lost money and trust of many friends.

And many other setbacks in life.

Recently I made a presentation on the concept of self-efficacy. It is the belief that we can complete a certain task completely. It also refers to our general trait that we think we can succeed in a variety of situations.

To make a long story short, while self-efficacy is very important, it is not everything. We humans have limit on what we can do, and we need to be humble enough to recognize our limit.

However, as Stephen Covey, the author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, proposes that as we focus on what we can do now (our circle of influence), and not on what we are concerned of but can’t do now (our circle of concern), we will stretch our circle of influence bigger and bigger.

Please go through my presentation and see if you can find out anything or not

Have you come across an one-page web sites before? I bet you have. A typical one-page web site consists of one page only. Normally it’s a long sales letter for only one product or service.

When you see the catchy words and sentences at the top of the page, you may be tempted to scroll down to read the rest. You may find out more about the product, its benefits, some customer testimonials, and of course a link to buy it.

Normally there is no link to any other page on the same web site where you can find more out more about the company, the product or service. All information is contained in one single page.

Such one-page web sites have existed for more than one decade since the 90’s, advocated by Internet marketing gurus such as the late Corey Rudl. However, nowadays many still advocate the use of one-page web sites to sell product. Perhaps it may still be working.

For me, I normally consider such web site as mere advertisement, sales letter and simply spammy. Normally when I come across such web site, I will simply leave and go elsewhere.

I once asked an Internet guru who is himself using an one-page web site to sell his training course. He answered that on such web site, visitors have no link to click away and so must stay on and focus on the web site to read the rest. Whereas visitors to a web site with multiple pages will be tempted to click around.

I reason that perhaps on an one-page web site, the visitors will be forced to follow the desired sales process by the seller, whereas this may not happen on a web site with multiple pages.

On regard to whether it’s spammy, the Internet guru said that if the web site is owned by your father or your trusted friend, surely you will not go away. So the challenge is to build trust.

And what do you think of an one-page web site?

I was in an MBA class when the lecturer asked us 1 + 1 = ?

She asked us to raise our hands if we thought it’s 2. To my surprise, half the class raised their hands. When asked who thought it’s more than 2, only a few hands were up!

Of course it was not a maths class. It’s a business class. I wonder whether the power of synergy has been undermined by many people. What two people can do together is more than the sum of what they can do individually.

Consider two colleagues who work on separate parts of the same proposal for a client. Each can come up with his or her own recommendation. But if they can work together and cross-check each other’s work, they can come up with better proposal for the client than if they produce it individually.

The same goes to individual students who prepare for exam. Instead of striving on their own, they can group together and discuss issues, questions and case studies, so that the new ideas generated are more than what they can come up with individually.

As for me, I can’t make a baby myself. Neither can my life partner make it herself. Nor can we make it individually, no matter how hard we try. We need to do it together!

I am privileged to have an existing customer happily hosting one of their web sites with me. Recently the boss told his staff to transfer all their domain names and hosting under me.

However, the other hosting provider, actually their outsource web developer, would not budge. He claimed the web sites make use of certain ASP.NET components not normally available on other servers.

Fair enough. I asked for a list of ASP.NET components required. Perhaps they really need to stay with him. But after checking the list, those are just standard components supported on most if not all servers.

Finally, the web developer agreed to let customer go, but not without a “transfer fee” charged for the trouble to transfer their web sites and email accounts to the new server (which I would help do for customer free of charge if given all necessary server login details).

However, after some consideration, the customer decided not to pay the “transfer fee”, not because of money, but because of principle. Maybe. But I suspect another reason being the fact that their web sites are under the control of the developer. They have to rely on the web developer to access and update their web sites.

After all, the web developer has been doing a good job maintaining their web sites. From customer’s point of view, why switch to me if there is not much compelling reason to switch over to me? But from my point of view, it is another typical case of customer web sites and hosting being hijacked by provider.

Guest blog post by Yowchuan of Meshio.com. Good piece of advice for businesses looking to build a web site.

A Typical Web Development Project

So, it’s finally time for you to look into building an online presence for your company’s website? Or it’s about time that you revamp the website after hearing from your boss that website is looking really dull for the 999th times.

I would assume that you have a budget for your web development project. I wouldn’t go into how you should come up with this budget, but a budget would give the developer and yourself a rough idea on the scale of the development. You cannot have a RM799.00 budget and ask for everything under the sun. A budget would also allow you to prioritize what features to include in your website, and what features should be implemented in the subsequent phase of your web development pipeline.

Ok, after the Management has approved with your budget, what should you do next? Naturally, the next step is to find a competent developer who can deliver the project fast, cheap and beyond expectations, as unrealistic as that might sound.

So, you post up the jobs, ask around your friends who’s in the IT business and do a search on Google for ‘Malaysia cheap and good web design companies’ or ‘cheap web designers’ or even ‘freelancers who work for free’. And after that, you shortlist 5 of them and asked each them to give you a quote. And you waited for a few days before all the quotes come in, and after looking at the figures you decided to meet with 2 of the cheapest one, and one that quoted the highest (just because you were curious why this particular designer is so different from the rest).

And after interviewing each of them, you finally nail down one company, let’s call them Super SEO Sdn Bhd, and the project begins by paying the web development company a 15% down payment. The project usually begins with Super SEO collecting all the information that you want to put up on to the web for the world to see. All the annual reports, the magazine scans and all your interviews with the newspapers. Next, you also require Super SEO to come up with a few prototypes to give you the ‘look and feel’ of the design. As a matter of fact, you don’t really know what you want, but heck, you can always change your mind, right?

And so it goes on for a few weeks, with Super SEO proposing their revised color scheme for the Nth times, while you continue to browse at your competitors’ website to see what they’ve been up to lately, and to see if there’s any cool features that you might be able to ‘steal’ from them.

If all of the above sounds familiar to you, then you’re very likely to find yourself with a website that did not bring in any positive impact in your sales. Well, at least now your company has a website, and you can include the cool URL on your name card and ironically, other than the URL, there’s really nothing inside the website that you could really shout about to your potential visitor. You begin to wonder why did you spend RM8,000 on the web development project.

My advice? Just get a domain name and have a single page with your company’s address on it. That will probably only cost you about RM150.00. Nothing to shout about either, but it’s going to have the same impact on your name card.

Hold it, now you’re saying that you are really, really serious about building your online presence and how else, other than the method explained above, can you go about it?

Who’s the Architect?

Here’s what I’ll propose, and I think this would definitely work much better than the commonly-used method illustrated earlier.

First, you must know what you want out of the website, and how the website will affect your business’s bottom line. No web developers on this planet can give you this answer, simply because they are just that- web developers. They know nuts about your business, and probably won’t be interested to listen to you brag about your rag-to-riches stories.

Contrary to what you may have been told, if you are going to build a website that works for you, the key architect of the site is none other than you and the people in your company. If it’s a revamp of your existing website, the feedbacks that you’ve gathered from previous visitors, clients and the web statistics will also be an important source of information in working out the blueprint of your web development project. You should be the person deciding the metrics you want to benchmark the website with. How many visitors are you expecting after the revamp? What keywords do you want to position your website with? Which languages do you think you should translate your site into? Which countries are most likely search about your industry and what kind of search engines do they use? Do you have a department in your company that would be able to tap into the company’s web resources and improve their service delivery?

And if you still think that your web developer is going to do all these for you, you’d better rethink your purpose of developing/revamping the website.

The Blue Print is All You Need

So, it’s really not rocket science. What I am really suggesting is that you need to first identify your web development’s need. Figure out the benchmarking metrics of your website and the conversion ratios you are hoping to accomplish. Let everyone in the company chip in and contribute in the planning phase. Get the blueprint of your project done and make changes whenever a better idea or suggestions come along. It’s 80% cheaper to change the features on the drawing board than after you’ve got your website up on the net.

It’s very tempting to hire a web developer based on their portfolio and their client base. Yes, these are important attributes which will help you determine whether they can deliver what you want, how you want it and when you want it. Yet, it’s even more important to engage a web developer who listens to your needs and can help to ensure your blueprint is realistic and achievable. An experienced web developer who can help you to come up with the final blueprint can also dramatically reduce your risk. The blueprint will usually only be a fraction of the entire project cost, but it’s also the foundation of the entire project. With this blueprint, you will have a clear idea of what to expect from the website and you can even bring around this blueprint to any web designing companies which can execute the blueprint for you, exactly the way you want it. Again, this can help to further reduce your development cost and also to ensure that you will not be ‘surprised’ with the end product.

Conclusion

A website is becoming one of the most important tools in an organization’s public communication strategy. You can deliver an impressive message by providing the information that your visitors are searching for with the least effort or you can be turning off potential customers with a few badly designed product purchasing forms.

.my DOMAIN REGISTRY (formerly MYNIC) is giving away 50% discount for all .my domain name registration until 4th September 2009!

.com.my, .net.my, .org.my – RM40, discounted from RM80

.my (second-level domain) – RM60, discounted from RM120

.name.my – RM16, discounted from RM32

Customers always ask me why .my domain names are more expensive than the international .com domain names. But now that .my domain prices have dropped, there is not much difference now. You can take advantage of it here!

Any price reduction is good news for us consumers. I suspect .my DOMAIN REGISTRY (formerly MYNIC) may not go back to the high price tag of RM80 any more, even after the promotion period.

After all, it happened before. Years ago, the then MYNIC had a similar promotion to reduce the original price of RM100 to RM80, and then decided to stay put with RM80 after the promotion and never went back to RM100!

It will be good for .my domain prices to drop to level similar to those of the international domain names such as .com. The price reduction makes our .my domain names more competitive in the international market.

Domain name resellers and hosting providers have no option but to follow suit and reduce the prices in accordance to the promotion. After all .my DOMAIN REGISTRY (MYNIC) sent out emails to all .my customers to inform about it!

However, a quick check on a few hosting providers’ web sites show that some of them have not yet updated their published domain prices to the lower prices. I don’t know whether .my DOMAIN REGISTRY (MYNIC) had given them ample time to prepare for the promotion or not.

But as for me, I only received the news on 16th July, just 4 days before the start of promotion period! It would have been better if I could know this earlier to prepare for it.

I’ve been dealing with a well-known web design company who developed a content management system for my customer’s web site. It is found that something does not work properly on the web site. PHP script errors appear on web page when the customer tries to update their web site.

Unfortunately, the web development company does not want to fix the error for the customer, unless they are paid a certain amount (which I think they should not charge at all) to “upgrade” the system. They claim to have developed the scripts using PHP version 4, but now that the server has been upgraded to PHP version 5, the scripts do not work any more. That is, they blame the problem on the server.

I checked the scripts but did not find any problems due to new PHP version. I found the errors as common programming errors, which can be fixed easily by them who developed and understand the system. In addition, the developer could not answer me when asked for exactly what outdated features of PHP 4 that the scripts are using that are not working now.

They refused to fix the problems for the customer, saying that the web site is not hosted with them. But I think this is not a very good reason, because a web site can be hosted and deployed anywhere, not necessarily theirs. They should support the web site no matter where it is housed.

Now they say they are no longer interested in serving the customer, and they say since I am so “expert”, then I should fix the errors for the customer. Well, even if I am in web development business, they are still the one who created the system. I think it is their responsibility to support the customer and not just simply pass the buck and walk away.

Have you been invited to join various specialized Facebook groups lately? For example, “Malaysia Badminton Network” for badminton lovers and “Malaysia Web Designers” for web professionals?

Yes, I have been joining some of these groups. Also learning about this new way of making money – building recommender community groups on Facebook.

Correct me if I’m wrong. But it works like this:

Decide on your passion, such as table-tennis or reading books.

Create a Facebook group around your passion, such as “Malaysia Table-Tennis Network”. Decide on what you can offer your group members.

Invite your friends on and off Facebook to join your group. Aim for the number.

Keep posting useful messages to group members to build your credibility, and make sure they get something beneficial out of joining your group!

Once you have reached a critical mass, such as 1000 members in your group, start leveraging the number to make money!

For example, you can contact sport organizations and companies to sponsor events, contests and prizes for your table-tennis sport group. You can help these sponsors sell their products. In return, you may get a cut of the profit.

Another example I’ve witnessed a book love group are doing. They leverage on their high number of members to negotiate with MPH to gain discount for their members.

I don’t know exactly yet how to translate number of members into profits, since I’m not there yet. But since you are leading your many group members now, you have the influence over the group members and “recommendation power” to talk to businesses interested in your group as their target customers.

And once you have achieved success with one niche group, start another group (better be related, I supposed), and leverage on the first group to promote the second!

Just announce to the first group that you have created a second group, then many of them will join you since they already trust you!

Does this business model work? I don’t know. But according to one Internet guru, building recommender community groups is one of the most profitable ventures on the Internet.

And what do you think?

I just started a new chapter in life by enrolling into the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme with Graduate School of Management in Universiti Putra Malaysia (GSM-UPM). And I feel excited about it!

Coming from a technical background in software engineering, I worked as a programmer and software developer, later started my own business. But the problem is, there is a whole lot of difference between a business run by a technician, and a business run by a business person.

In trying to cross over from a technical person to a business person, there are many skills and expertise I need to develop, including problem-solving, presentation, public speaking and networking, among others.

Certainly no MBA will be the magic bullet to provide everything I need to learn in business. But it will give me a good foundation in both knowledge and business skills, knowledge being the know how in different functional aspects of business and business as a whole, which I never learned in a class.

But most importantly, it’s the business skills that I’m looking for. I would not have gone for any academic course in business, if not for its student-centered learning, problem-based learning and self-directed learning approaches by GSM. Their unique positioning in how they impart knowledge and skills to the students attracted me, apart from being one of the top business schools in Malaysia and Asia.

I’m taking only two subjects per trimester (school term or semester as they call it, as there are three semesters in a year), which is the least number of subjects possible, in order to spread the whole course over 2 years. My subjects this trimester are Organizational Behaviour and Accounting For Decision Making if you are interested to know.

I don’t want to rush as I still have a business to take care. I also think it’s the learning and development process that counts, not just the end result. Moreover, I don’t need to finish the course quickly in order to get to the job market fast. I’m not interested in job anyway

So I’m glad to be an MBA student now. It will be an important part of my learning and development plan in realizing my dream in business. I’m going to learn, develop, network and enjoy in the whole process!

Much thanks to my long time customer Ms Alison and business partner Tim for being kind and supportive referees to recommend me for the course.

If you are a current MBA student in GSM, I want to know you! Please add me as your friend on my Facebook page! (Please do introduce yourself when adding)

What do you think of MBA? Feel free to share

One year ago, a customer who had been hosting with me for a few years, decided to hire a new web designer. The web design company was a reputable one and customer was very satisfied with their work.

However, this web design company insisted the customer use their web hosting service. Web hosting was part of their web development package for the customer. Not being a technical person and not having been briefed clearly, the customer unknowingly agreed to the deal.

Later the web design company called me up to get my “cooperation” to transfer hosting to their server. I sought clarification from customer but he said he never wanted to switch hosting provider. He still wanted to host with me.

But the web design company was very adamant that the customer must host with them. They claimed that they had set up everything about customer’s web site and database on their own in-house server, and so it was very troublesome to move their work to my server. They said it was “easier” for them to develop the web site by hosting on their server.

Luck was on my side, though. Customer insisted to host with me and gave them official notification to the web design company to host their works on my server. Long story cut short, the customer is still happily hosting with me until now.

By some discovery later on, I found out that the web design company was actually using hosting from third-party hosting provider. So they had not been very honest by saying the customer must host on their own “in-house server”.

From my experience, it is generally not true that you must host your web site with your web design company. No matter where you host, as long as they get hold of the details on how to log on to the server, they can do their work.

It is also generally not true that it’s “easier” for them to develop your web site on their server. No matter where you host, they work on your web site using pretty much the same ways – uploading and downloading by FTP, web-based administration using cPanel and PhpMyAdmin, and so on.

But I know of some cases where a customer’s web site makes use of special features available only on the web designer’s server. Then in such cases, you have no choice but host with them. But these cases are rare.

Web design and web hosting are two different services. These two services can be separated and provided by different providers. But a web design company often bundle web hosting in their service, and this is perfectly good strategy. But it is not good when they are not being honest and transparent with you.

A customer often needs to share files for his clients. The clients need to see the photos of his products before deciding to buy. The photo files are often large in file size.

He has been using File Transfer Protocol (FTP) software for this purpose. He created a specific directory on his web server, uploads the files into that directory, and asks clients to download from that directory.

While this has been working for his purpose so far, it is not a very good way for file sharing. For one, non-technical users may not know how to download files using FTP. Either they need to know what to type on the address bar in Windows Explorer (such as ftp://user@ftp.domain.com), or they need to install and use some FTP software to download the files. Worse, some companies do not allow employees to install new program without proper authorization.

Also, if the files are to be shared among more than one client, a client who can access the directory can often see the files shared to other clients. Of course, my customer can create different directories for different clients. But it’s simply more work.

Also, his clients just want to look at the photos. By using FTP, they need to first download the files in order to view the photos. But download wastes time, especially for large files.

FTP as its name suggests, is used for “file transfer”, that is to upload and download files from and to a server. It is not really meant for “file sharing”, which is to share files between and among more than one user.

Since my customer needs to share photos, instead of using the more technical FTP, why not use Flickr instead? Just upload the photos to Flickr, decide who can view the photos, and share the web address which contains the photos to the clients. The clients will be able to view the photos without needing to download.

I was called in by a company to attend a meeting together with their outsource web designer. My job was to give advice on their server hosting requirements. But as I followed their conversation, I found something that may indicate how some people perceive web designers.

The customer saw web design as a lowly job. It seems they considered a web designer nothing more than someone who get paid to simply put up their company photos online and finish her job.

They insisted a whole Flash-only web site to be done up for less than RM1,000. But I think the market rate is at least RM5,000 if not more!

But what surprised me most was that, the pitiful freelance part-time web designer, though obviously being looked down on, accepted the job at such dirt-cheap rate! I don’t know what quality of work she is going to deliver.

Are the web designers out there doing work just to “cari makan” (earn a little money here and there to feed stomach)? Good and passionate web designers like Danny Foo will be the first to disagree. Nowadays web designers are not just designers. They are artists, engineers, strategists, marketeers and business consultants! The good designers are in for long-term business.

Unfortunately how the market perceive web designers may not be so noble. This maybe something for web designers to ponder on. Why such a bad reputation?

For me I don’t see web design as a lowly job. I know web design in general, though it’s not my choice for business. I know the time and effort a dedicated web designer put in to show up a quality work, though not well recognized and appreciated by others.

Not everyday is perfect day and problems can come up anytime. Sometimes I have to put up with a bad hair day too. So I wonder whether it would be better to turn bald when I get old so that I don’t have to worry about my hair any more!

Anyway, sometimes my hosting customers too can encounter problems in their Internet connection to our server. I normally ask them to check their connection to server and send me report generated by a software called PingPlotter. Customer support by phone and email is a full-time job. So I might as well post here and refer them to this article.

So are you reading this because you can’t connect to our server, or any web site? Download PingPlotter (free version) at http://www.pingplotter.com to find out what’s wrong. Install and run the program as usual.

As you can see above, there is a little text box at the top left. Just type your server address there and hit Enter. The server address depends on what you want to check. It could be mail.yourdomain.com or pop.yourdomain.com for mail server, webmail.yourdomain.com for webmail, www.yourdomain.com or simply yourdomain.com for your web site.

A little graph will be generated on the right hand side every few seconds. It shows what happened along the way from your PC to our server. If the graph is mostly in green, you are having good connection. If there is some yellow or red color, there might be some bottleneck or network problem somewhere halfway.

To churn out the report, click Edit menu, then Copy As Image. You can then start and paste the copied image into your graphic software, such as Paint. Then save the image and send to me at ricky [at] rickysoo.com.

Any question or comments? Welcome to comment below.

Are you a blogger? If you are in one of these situations, perhaps it’s time to consider stop blogging, or at least adjust how you do it:

You do not know why you are blogging.

You do not know what to blog about.

You do not know who your target readers are.

You do not know what you can offer to readers.

You do not feel happy and at peace blogging

You blog because others do, or others asked you to.

Your blog is just a copycat of another more established blog.

Your blog is not serving what you intend to achieve.

Your blog conversion rate is too low.

Very few people read or subscribe to your blog.

You find blogging eat up too much of your time and energy.

You find blogging become more important than other things in life such as your job and relationships.

You find blogging working against your life objectives!

Do you have anything else to add? Please feel free.

Actually this is a checklist for myself. I started blogging since years ago on Google’s Blogspot. Since then, I have stopped and restarted a few blogs.

During my previous blogs, I could easily answer yes to many items in above checklist. When one blog was not working, it’s time to take a hard look!

At last, I settled down with this blog since April 2008 and it’s been one year plus now. Hopefully it will stay long this time

Some time ago, I was asked to join a closed group of fellow bloggers for a new startup. It is a blog portal consisting of a few columns for different sub-topics. Each fellow blogger is to blog for his or her own column.

I was initially skeptical of the business model. The idea seems old and uninteresting. But after getting to know that the startup was to be backed by one of the most visited web site in Malaysia, my perception changed. Its very high traffic is going to spill over to the new portal and bring advertising dollars to the new business.

In fact, though the idea is not new, I think the startup is going to work. Those who joined the group are going to earn, not only financially, but in reputation and authority as well.

But unfortunately, I am unable to fulfill their requirements. Each blogger is to blog at least one post per day. So it’s 7 blog posts per week, 30 blog posts per month, at least.

Not that they emphasize quantity over quality. But the founder said most successful blogs have something new everyday to become successful, though it may not be long essay everyday.

I can’t join because I can’t commit myself to blog everyday. Currently I’m blogging only once or twice per week. I’m not a full-time blogger or problogger, but rather an occasional one. I even consider myself still quite a newbie in blogging.

Furthermore, it’s going to be like a full-time job to blog everyday. It’s not only the time spent to write, but it’s the time spent to read up, research, think and organize my thoughts that is going to consume most of my waking hours, every single day!

So it’s going to be a job for me to work in rather than a business, and it’s a pretty hectic job. My personal mission is not to create a job for myself. My mission is to create a business. Otherwise, I might as well work for others.

When an opportunity knocks, no matter how great it is, one may still need to think whether it is in line with one’s life mission or not. In this case, the blogging job is really not for me.

It’s a pity for me not being able to join this startup. But it’s OK. Opportunities abound on the Internet. Our job is just to be ready when they come

Still thinking of using search engines, email newsletter and affiliate marketing to promote your products and services on Internet? While these are essential, let’s not be outdated. It’s all about marketing on social media nowadays.

Yes, the Internet is getting more and more “social”, with real people using the Internet to interact and influence one another. Much thanks to the advent of blogs, and social media sites like Facebook and Twitter (strictly speaking, blogs are not social media). Even the older generation have jumped on the bandwagon and claimed an account on Facebook. In fact, if you are not “in” social media nowadays, you are “out”!

Therefore, the social media now presents a natural channel for marketing your products and services on such increasingly social online networks. After all, many people have always been looking for others’ opinions when deciding to buy (or not buy) something, used to be offline, but now online also.

In the local hosting industry, it seems hosting providers are picking up on marketing through social media. I know one company has set up their profile on various social media such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and Plurk!

This company is capitalizing well on social media. They offer money for bloggers who write about them. They give out prizes for lucky draw winners who follow them on Twitter, tweet about them, and ask others to retweet about them. They also own a company page on Facebook and promise to offer discounts for domain names based on the number of Facebook members who become their fans. Yeah, many social media jargons here, I know

I also had set up a Facebook group and a Twitter account for BizPartner, and tried to create some buzz in social media. I have yet to achieve what I want, but I’m trying, and learning.

And we can expect that more and more hosting providers will soon start to use social media for innovative marketing, branding and customer relationship building.

A business partner asked how to sell hosting to customers when there are other hosting providers who can offer super large hosting space at dirt cheap rate. For example, 100GB at RM180 only!

While I’m facing the same problems competing in such fragmented hosting industry, these are a few pointers we managed to come up with.

Firstly, don’t try to fight them with even larger space at even lower price. How about going to the other extreme, by selling small but enough hosting space at half or quarter of their prices? For example, selling only 100MB at just RM80? But the customers need to be educated that they actually won’t make use of so much space.

Secondly, expose the tricks (even deception) used by hosting providers. Nowadays anyone can sell any large amount of hosting space at cheap rates using the “overselling” kind of business model. This works because statistically an average customer will not use even 10% of the space promised to them. Some customers are “space-greedy”. They need to know the inconvenient truth in the hosting industry.

Thirdly, bundle hosting service with other services with prices you have more control on, such as web design. This way, customers may not know even if you charge them double the hosting prices.

Fourthly, but a very bad strategy – fight the competitors with even larger space at cheaper price! We know some customers will be lured into this but actually never use so much space anyway. Nevertheless, I’m against this as it is over-promising.

Last but not least, seek out blue ocean strategies that you no longer need to compete with other hosting providers in such a red ocean. But seek out new markets and sell to them some services which include hosting service.

Just as an example, how about an online service for couples getting married? Many couples get married every week. More and more couples start to want a wedding web site to commemorate such big event! In providing such service, you no longer compete with other hosting providers but customers will have unknowingly bought your hosting service anway.

I suddenly came up with this weird thought. Why not reverse the charges? Charge RM1 for parking under 2 hours, but give it free for over 2 hours?

The purpose is to get people stay longer in the mall, and hopefully spend more as a result? Yes, there will be those who lepak (wander around) without spending a single cent. But in overall, more crowd means more business.

Do you think this idea works?

Some time ago, I was asked to take over and transform an online dating and matching service. Its web site was still typical Web 1.0 style which was almost dead with very few members and traffic.

Trying to keep to my principle not to do what others were already doing, I proposed a new strategy to the owner. However, I didn’t proceed in the venture as we couldn’t agree on the right business model. At the end of discussion, the owner still preferred a business model 90% identical with the existing one!

Nowadays, many youngsters look for friendship and relationship on social network web sites, But besides casual relationships, there are others who look for serious life partner. So there are many offline dating and matching services around. Naturally, some of them get online and here come these online dating and matching web sites.

The problem is that, do people trust the Internet to look for their future husband or wife? Most do not. They don’t think Internet as a safe place. Instead, they consider it full of cheaters. The trust for the channel is just not there. We may disagree, but this is the market perception, at least for my (older) generation.

Internet presence might work for an offline matching service using the Internet to promote their service, automate some business processes and value-add to their offline offerings. But how about a purely online matching service? Will it work?

If you were to operate such an online matching service, how do you make it big on the Internet? Difficult, if not impossible. This calls even more badly for a blue ocean strategy. Let’s not be so bounded and bondaged by the same old thought just as other competitors in the industry.

One year ago, as a volunteer work, I created a blog for an event. The good news is, the organizer didn’t have to fork out a single cent for Internet presence. The bad news is, the blog challenged the way they thought how a web site works.

I was helping to blog regularly for the event. As you know, whatever we blog now comes up at the top. I remember being told not to blog any more for time being, because the last blog post was so important that it had to stay at the top of the home page. In another case, the committee chairman told me a post had disappeared! It had “dropped off” the home page after a few newer posts were put up!

With the advent of World Wide Web, we became so used to the way how a web site organized itself, that is, hierarchically with menus and sections. But blogs changed the way how a web site works.

On blogs, the latest piece of information comes at the top. Then as we put up more posts, the previous post will “drop” down in the home page slowly to the bottom, until “disappearing” into oblivion (actually hidden from the home page).

Frankly, when I first started to read blogs and publish a blog, I was not so used to how it worked too. I thought it was not “user-friendly”. But as time went by, I started to see the logic and got familiar with blogs now.

Instead of an almost dead hierarchical web site, a blog site is just like a live person who changes from time to time. Rather than just looking at the same old and cold content, a blog gives a more personal touch, a plus point for businesses. It encourages more interaction with the users, through links, search box, comments, widgets and others.

But there are still many who think blogs are not the best way to organize information. As “the customers are the kings”, we must not be so proud to assume that blog is the best architecture for a web site. But just like other technologies, I believe blogs will evolve to be even better and more useful.

Here are a few web development projects available for freelance web programmers. Please contact me and I’ll happily connect you to the person in charge.

To maintain an existing match-making web site

To develop an online job portal

To develop a business networking web site

To develop an online charity web site

To develop a web site plus web application for a non-profit nationwide sports event – This is a volunteer and non-paying job. But I guess the web programmer will be given due recognition and a plus point in his or her portfolio.

As for me, I’m not a web designer and not in web development business. I developed and still maintain my own sites (yeah, I know I should not do it myself). I was a programmer and I still can program well in PHP (and that’s the only programming language I still know now!)

It’s good to have a gift in web development and programming. But it’s one thing to be a “technician” doing programming, it’s another thing to be an “entrepreneur” in business world. To turn from owning a job to a business, and from working in a business to working on a business, I just have to come out of my comfort zone called programming.

Sometimes I’m asked to develop web sites, from both commercial and not-for-profit sources. But my time commitment does not allow me to take in any of these jobs. Sacrificing precious hours for these web projects means I have to sacrifice time for other more important life goals, though sometimes these projects are good and worthy ones. In other words, doing web development projects simply drags my feet from achieving what I want!

I one unsolicited commercial email in the spam folder recently from yet another training company. At the bottom of the email, it reads:

Anti-SPAM Policy Disclaimer:
Mail cannot be considered spam as long as we include contact information and a remove link for removal from this mailing list. If this e-mail is unsolicited, please accept our apologies. Further transmissions to you by the sender may be stopped at NO COST to you.

This spammer has a serious misunderstanding of what a spam is. Any unsolicited commercial bulk email is spam. But the spammer tries to justify his action by deceiving people the real meaning of spam. Or maybe he tries to avert his own guilt by talking himself into believing this is not a spam!

Further transmissions to you maybe stopped at NO COST to you? If you ever reply or click on the unsubscribe link hoping never to hear from the spammer again, sorry but you are wrong. By receiving your request to unsubscribe, a spammer can verify that your email address is active and so, worth spamming to! He may not spam to you again himself, but your email address can be used by other spammers to send you even more garbage!

It is good for businesses to use email marketing to promote products and services. But not in this way. Spamming is very ineffective yet it brings many negative consequences to our business. Some of us just have to mature up and know what works and what does not.

Perhaps you work in a company with offices in a few countries or a few branches. Or perhaps your company has many staff with various departments.

Would you like to indicate your location or department in your email address? You can use subdomain in your email address such as sales@malaysia.mycompany.com or ricky@hr.mycompanycom!

What is a subdomain anyway? It is anything that goes before your domain name. For example, in “singapore.mycompany.com”, “mycompany.com” is the domain name” and “singapore” is the subdomain.

It’s easy to create email address with your chosen subdomain. Let’s create an email address called ricky@malaysia.mycompany.com.

Log into your web-based control panel cPanel.

In cPanel, go to the Domains section and click Subdomains.

Enter “malaysia” as subdomain, specify the location of the subdomain (such as /public_html/malaysia), and click Create button.
