By combining the sleek spirit of a sports coupe with the practicality of a four-door sedan, the 2013 CC appeals to a wide audience. And now, we’re making a great thing even better by introducing the CC R-Line On June 1^st at the Leipzig International Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled the R-Line version of the CC. What makes it so sporty? That’d be its 200-horsepower, 2.0-liter, turbocharged TSI® engine, which can be mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
But there’s so much more: the R-Line upgrades continue inside and out. Its newly redesigned front bumper boasts a more aggressive stance than the one found on the Sport, Lux, and Executive models. It also features a large lower air intake and projector-style fog lights as well as side skirts, shaded taillights, an R-Line logo on the grille, and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. Once inside, there are stainless steel R-Line scuff plates and, for the DSG-equipped model, paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

The 2013 CC was refreshed with new front and rear styling as well as an extended range of standard equipment. It will be available in the US at the end of 2012 and now offers seating for five (as opposed to four in previous models).
Volkswagen's turbocharged 2.0-liter is hard to fault, and it's a good fit for the CC. Acceleration is quick off the line, strong around town, and the DSG does a nice job automatically rowing through the gears all by itself. Manual control is offered on the shifter (press forward to upshift and pull back to downshift), a control arrangement that we have always found cumbersome. For some unknown reason, the CC Lux doesn't come with steering wheel-mounted paddles, and they were sorely missed with this slick gearbox.
The CC is slightly shorter in length when compared to the Passat (188.9 inches as opposed to 191.6 inches) and it has about 10-percent less passenger volume (93.6 cubic feet as opposed to 102.0 cubic feet). While the dimensions aren't that far off, in practice the CC feels tighter and more compact from within the cabin, largely thanks to its sloping roof. The new fifth passenger seating position is good in a pinch, but adults (and kids, quite frankly) won't want to occupy it for a roadtrip. Don't buy a CC for its interior room.

In terms of gripes, we didn't like the retractable fabric shade over the moonroof. It is designed to block the sun from our scalps, yet it still lets too much light and heat into the cabin. The navigation system feels cheap and outdated even when compared to today's handheld units, and it doesn't allow the user to see "the big picture" (it cannot be zoomed all the way out). Lastly, we found some visual distortion in the nearly horizontal rear glass window.

The CC's styling has always differentiated it from the competition (it remains the only four-door coupe in the segment). However, Volkswagen's facelift and update appears to us as a bit of a softening... a move towards mainstream. When the five-passenger cabin is factored in, regardless of how welcome it is, the CC's uniqueness in this crowd is even less so. Five years ago, the CC was a breath of fresh styling over a very good midsize sedan. Today, little more than its roofline sets it apart.

The Evora 414E is powered by two electric motor packs driving the rear wheels through its Xtrac transmission with a battery pack that can be charged by the Lotus range extender engine or directly from mains electricity. The Lotus 3 cylinder range extender engine has been design protected to run on either gasoline or renewable bio alcohol fuels (methanol and ethanol). It drives an EVO electric generator which produces electrical energy to either charge the battery pack or power the EVO traction motors directly. In normal driving, the Evora 414E will run purely on electricity stored in the battery pack for up to 30 miles (48 km).

With the Lotus range extender and the electric traction motors powering the vehicle through an Xtrac 1092 transmission, the Evora 414E is targeted to produce just 55 g of CO₂ / km emissions on the Northern European Driving Cycle (NEDC).
Should the driver require more performance, under hard acceleration, for example, the electricity will come from both the battery storage and the small range extender engine.

The Terrafugia Transition flying car is closer to becoming a real road-going reality. The Transition finished its first round of Federal Aviation Administration certification flight tests (there are five more rounds to go) at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York, and is headed for on-road drive testing.

It's another small step toward the flying cars we've been promised since at least the halcyon days of the "better living through technology" 1950s. The Transition was supposed to start deliveries by the end of this year at a cost under $200,000. The price has swollen to around $279,000 and while Terrafugia is happy to accept your deposit, expect at least a year or two before taking delivery. Still, if you have the money and an desire to be Elroy Jetson, it looks like you may eventually get your wish.

This tapered wagon version of the shapely CLS is certainly a looker, even in pre-production, camo-clad protype form, and after giving its shockingly quick sedan counterpart high marks for its driving dynamics, we can only assume that the complete Shooting Brake package will be really, really sweet.

Oh yeah, there's an AMG version, too.

Seen here for the first time, the CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake takes the same sleek long-roof shape of the CLS550 Shooting Brake prototypes we've seen, but adds all of the bulgy bits fitting of any high-performance Merc. All we can say is, it looks absolutely stunning, and we can't wait to see the finished product.

Power is expected to come from the same twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 found in the CLS63 sedan, sending 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels via Mercedes' seven-cog Speedshift transmission. Like the sedan, we expect that Mercedes-Benz will offer an AMG Performance Pack, which boosts power to 550 hp and 590 lb-ft in the sedan. Holy moly.

Volkswagen confirms late 2013 launch date for all-electric Golf

Volkswagen is taking its time getting into the all-electric game. Given the tremendous ups and downs that electric vehicles and EV start-up companies are going through, maybe making sure you have a car where everything is working smoothly – to say nothing about getting the infrastructure in place – isn't such a bad idea. And it now seems like VW is confident enough in its Golf EV, which is undergoing testing in California, to push up its estimated release date from 2014 to late 2013.

Sure, technically, that could be a difference of just one day, but we don't think that's what VW of America president Jonathan Browning meant when he confirmed next year's U.S. release date with Automotive News. Late 2013 is also when the car will go on sale in Europe. A plug-in hybrid Golf is supposed to go on sale in 2015.

Even though VW is getting ready to move into electric vehicle territory, it is well behind other automakers. Perhaps that's why it is also a bit less optimistic about the potential success of plug-ins. The automaker expects just three percent of its new vehicles to be EVs or hybrids by 2018.

2013 Nissan Altima

While everyone was waiting for the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, Nissan was busy revealing a teaser video for their new generation Altima that will be unveiled at the 2012 New York Auto Show in April.

Although no real details were offered, it has already been confirmed that the new Altima will feature a new-generation CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) that’s said to offer 40 percent less friction than the current unit. Under the hood, the current 270 HP 3.5-liter V-6 engine should remain, but a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a hybrid version will also be offered. A new design language will also be adopted, but just to make the car look a little bit more modern.

The Nissan Altima is built at Nissan’s assembly plants in Smyrna, Tenn. and Canton, Miss. The engines for the Altima are built at the company’s Decherd, Tenn. plant. The Altima is the second best-selling car in the United States.

Nissan has unveiled new teasers - one image and one video - for the 2013 Altima that is set to be unveiled next week at the 2012 New York Auto Show. The new video offers a glimpse of the car’s front enddesign. Nissan is also promising that the new Altima will bring outstanding fuel economy, premium design inside and out, and driver-focused technologies to a midsize sedan.

2013 BMW X4

BMW has already confirmed their plans of adding another model to their X-Series line-up. The new X4 will join the current X3, X5, and X6 models, and it should be unveiled by the end of 2012. The X4 will be built on the same platform as the X3 and will be produced at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina.

The new X4 will feature BMW’s latest design language, including a slightly forward-slanting kidney grille and LED accent lights positioned like eyebrows above the striking twin headlights.

Built on the same platform as the X3, the upcoming X4 will be offered with the same engines as the X3, but with power improvements - the most powerful version will deliver up to 306 HP. An M version will be powered by a 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine with 350 HP.
