However, they also cost a lot more so the difference between the different versions will have an effect on the modifications that the import builder is able the carry out, therefore this is why the Evo 8 is the best for the job at the moment. All Evos use the same 2.0 litre engine with a choice of either s five or six speed manual gearbox, but it is what can be done with the engine that is so impressive. Therefore, as the car pulls out of the factory you can expect to be receiving around 200 HP, but with some fine tuning this can easily be increased to over 400 HP and that is seriously impressive by any accounts.

Under the hood of this modified car there are plenty of branded parts, you can see Greddy, AMS and NX straight away and this stuff apart from being costly means business. This is not tinkering by anyone’s standards, this is building the car from factory specs to import builder perfection, which is the aim of the project, to build the best car around and this Evo 8 is easily there.

This car may be finished in black on yellow, but you should not hold that against it, colours are subjective to say the least and mean nothing. Performance is key here and despite the fact that there are no figure for the car, you can make a guess that they are not getting 200 HP out of this baby. If we had to guess this is getting closer to the perfect 400 HP and why not, it has the look and therefore should have what it takes too!

To get an idea of the thinking behind this car we need to look at the Honda Civic during the mid eighties, this is a car born out of the need to produce something for everybody and it certainly does that, with four body styles and the choice of several engine and gearbox options. However, the car that we are interested here is the three door hatchback that would have been powered by the 76 HP 1.5 litre engine. But the Civic is nothing but versatile and because of this it should be a dream car for import builders as they need cars with plenty of spares available and they also have to be something different too, which the Civic is. So take this unassuming looking car and start to pull it apart and you are left with a good base for a great build. The first thing that stands out with this car is the colouring, this bright yellow and blue design is the colouring of builder racing team, Spoon Sports, this team is well known in Japan not just as a racers.

Nevertheless, as testers for Honda too, this car from 1985 is significant because this is when the company was formed, this is where Spoon started and now Tatsuru Ichishima the president of Spoon is a national hero and racing icon.

The car is totally original, this is what Spoon was built on and so it deserves a bit of recognition, as all cars that a led the charge should be, this is a turning point for the company. If the car failed there would be no Spoon Sports as we know it. The same can be said for other top teams too; there future is based firmly on what happened in the past!

Then finally, there is the body shape, does the buyer want a sedan, station wagon or hatchback version, with so many choices, it is clear to why the Mazda6 is fast becoming a popular choice with import builders.

This Mazda6 first hit the roads in the US during 2003, but the power would have only been around 136 HP to a sporty 146 HP. But that is nothing to get too excited about and soon with some clever tricks of the trade, import builders would be able to knock out up to 300 HP with just a few fine tweaks here and there, this is what modifying cars is all about.

This particular version of the Mazda6 is the 2006 model it has the look and styling but at the same time there are subtle changes that have been designed to produce better performance but look out of place when compared to the standard road going car. A good example of this is the front end, the carbon fibre grill replaces the standard fitting, but it gives the car and entirely different look from the front.

The body is smooth and rounded, while the addition of some serious 18 x 7.5 inch Momo alloy wheels with Falken rubber shows even the uninitiated that this is a car that has something extra under the hood! Yet the builder here has elected to introduce just a few changes that are designed to improve performance, such as an AEM air intake, Magnaflow exhaust and BC Racing coilovers. This is a car that means business, it has the looks and the performance to go with it, just perfect!

However, in doing so the R34 has become the benchmark car for all Skylines. The R34 is powered by either a 2.0 litre, 2.5 litre V6, 2.6 litre V6 or the 2.8 litre V6 power units, couple with the four or five speed auto and a five speed manual gearbox the choices here would determine how good the car is later on in its life.

The Mazda 6 is a wonderfully adaptable car, that started its production run in 2002 and continues today with the second generation version. It is powered by either a 1.8 litre, 2.0 litre, 2.3 litre or the sporty 3.0 litre V6 power units with a four, five or six speed auto, or the five or six speed manual gear boxes, it is clear why import builders like this car so much.

The Mazda 6 replaced the equally successful Mazda 626, which in its day was equally as exciting, but the Mazda 6 has something that other cars do not and that is the wide choice of options. For the buyer it is like having a car personally built for them and with a choice of power from around 136 HP up to around 280 HP the possibilities are almost endless, limited by the owners imagination and wallet!

This modified version of the car has only a limited amount of work under the hood, with a K & N intake being the most prominent change. It is the look and handling that has been given the import builder treatment and why not this is a Mazda 6 after all and so therefore has enough power under the foot to please any driver hopping to join a cruise up and the down the high street.

In pure white, not all cars can pull it off, but for some strange reason this Mazda 6 does and it manages to so in style, taking the age of the white car to another level. While those beautiful black and shiny wheels take the edge of the finish, white wheels would not do here! Inside this car is more like an executive play thing, with wood, leather and hi-tech gadgets taking prominence but that is to be expected with a car such as this, isn’t it?

Back to the 350Z though its pedigree can be directly traced back to the early 1970’s and the famous Datsun 240Z, which at the time was a serious sports car and gained the attention of builders even back then, when it was not PC to drive Japanese. The Nissan 350Z, naturally comes with a 3.5 litre V6 engine, the production would have been producing around 287 HP and there would have been a choice of a five speed auto or six speed manual gearbox. In short, this car has been designed to tap into the sports car market, with a car that is stylish and has the Nissan culture of quality and reliability that consumers demand. This particular model, has been carefully thought out, it takes the best of everything available on the market and combined with some hard work and plenty of time, this has produced one of the best looking cars on the scene.
I love the way that this build has managed to leave the engine alone but by adding a nice NOS system and AEM intake system, this has given the car that little bit extra under the foot! Where this car comes out on top is in its style and design, check out the list of exterior and interior modifications, it is clear that the builder he was going for impact over performance, but you know what they have achieved both!

However, despite the name differences these are cars that are very impressive and have actually been around since 1996.

We are looking at the first generation model here; it came with a choice of either a 1.6 litre, 1.8 litre or the 2.0 litre power unit and a choice of either the four speed auto or the five speed manual gearbox. The car has a curvy look with a flowing line from to back to help with aerodynamics and to give that sporty feel, which is all important when buying a sports coupe.

Nevertheless, cars such as this can easily be modified, it takes a bit of time and money, yet the finished item is well worth the effort in the end. Performance wise the basic road going car would have between 114 HP and 140 HP, although with a few tweak here and there it is possible to add a further 50+ HP should that be desired, in this case it would seem that the look is more important than performance.

While a few changes have been made under the hood, the main effort has been put into creating an exciting exterior and equally interesting interior. But this is modifying and in many cases this means customising to the desires of the driver and this often produces a wonderfully unique car, which this is, you only have to look at the images to see just how individual this car is, compared to the standard model.

The Honda Civic Type R may have been around for over thirteen years but it has not been standing still as with other car marks the Type R has been evolving in fact this model is already on its third generation design and it is pretty spectacular too! The car uses the standard Honda 1.6 litre and the 2.0 litre engine, both of which suit the car perfectly, but we are looking at the third generation Civic Type R here.

This car has the 2.0 litre power unit with a lovely six speed manual gearbox, it easily produces around 200 HP and for a car of this size, that is some serious power output. The Civic has always had that sporty edge to it and the third generation Type R does not disappoint in any way, even though it comes in a choice of the three door hatchback or the popular four door sedan body styling.

Modifying a car such as this, take vision and flair to take a fairly new car and make it better, it takes guts to rip a car such that to pieces and then rebuild it in order to make the car better than it is was when it rolled off the production line. But this is more than a car that has been polished and stickered up, this is a car with a racing edge on it, it make look like a Type R, but it is much more than that.

The first thing that stands out is the power, due to some clever engineering this car now produces around 237 HP, which may not seem like a serious increase, but it is when you consider the size and weight of this car. Secondly, there are not power bulges or pointless spoilers, this car is cool and smart both inside and out, it is exactly how the designers of Type R III would have made it, if they could!

When we think of the Nissan Skyline it is easy to think about the later fourth and fifth generation models as these are the ones that are more recent and therefore more popular. However, it was in 1989 when the GTR was reborn and although technology was limited at that time, Nissan made up for this with a style and design, the GTR that we know of today comes from the cool third generation Skyline GTR. The evolution III brought in that classic two door coupe body shape that we still see in the fifth generation car, it would have been powered by the straight six 2.6 litre engine and came with a standard five speed manual gearbox. Customer options were clearly not top of the manufacturers wish list with this car, but 313 HP soon made up for any short fall on the optional upgrade menu to start with! So this is a 1990 model, that makes it one of the early versions and yet this car looks just good now as it did when it pulled of the showroom, in fact it is probably better in many ways as this is a modified car. Unlike some import builder … Continue reading →

So this is a 1990 model, that makes it one of the early versions and yet this car looks just good now as it did when it pulled of the showroom, in fact it is probably better in many ways as this is a modified car. Unlike some import builder cars, this one has been worked on in all areas, from the hi gloss black paintwork to the serious modifications that have taken place under hood, there are no figures available but we can assume that there is more power under foot too!

Taking a glimpse in the engine bay there is one thing apparent here, top brands! We see Greddy, Apexi, Nismo and more, this is what we need to see when the hood is popped. However, even the exterior oozes style and designer coolness, with a set of Emotion XT7 alloy wheels sporting Falken Azenis tyres. This is a complete car now and it shows, its original and yet in some ways it is new, what combo that is in a modified car.
