Xiaomi Arena fell silent Thursday night as Jordan Loyd’s stepback three-pointer splashed through the net with the final buzzer, giving Poland an 84-82 victory over Latvia in FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 European Qualifiers action that will sting for weeks to come.

Latvia had this one. Arturs Strautins, who had the packed Arena Riga crowd chanting MVP in the fourth quarter, buried clutch free throws to tie the game at 79-79 with a minute to play, then hit another to put Latvia ahead 80-79. The atmosphere was electric — a hostile, energetic crowd willing their national team to close out a gritty back-and-forth battle.

But Loyd, the Polish-American guard known affectionately as “Loydowski” among Polish fans, had other plans. His 37-point masterclass — featuring seven three-pointers — ranks as the third-highest scoring game in FIBA World Cup European Qualifiers history, trailing only Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 40 and Dennis Schröder’s 38.

For Latvia, the loss is particularly bitter. They dominated stretches of the game, building a 48-39 halftime lead behind energetic defense that produced four steals and forced seven Polish turnovers. Poland clawed back in the third quarter to take a 66-62 lead into the final period, setting up a tense finish.

Alongside Strautins, Latvia received key contributions from Lomažs, who hit a crucial three-pointer in the fourth quarter and converted important free throws down the stretch. Skuja orchestrated the offense with energy and precision, while Zoriks provided a spark off the bench. Steinbergs, Silins, and Mejeris all battled throughout.

A late no-call on what appeared to be a foul against Lomažs on a drive added to the frustration. Latvia had controlled the game with under a minute remaining — then Loyd took over.

For Latvia, it’s back to work. This one hurts precisely because it was winnable.

While tech hubs like London and Berlin grab headlines, Latvia’s startup ecosystem has been steadily maturing into a legitimate force in European innovation. From fintech to logistics to proptech, Latvian companies are scaling globally — and doing it with less hype and more substance.

The numbers tell the story. Latvian startups raised over €150 million in venture capital in 2025, according to the Latvian Startup Association, with several companies achieving significant international expansion. Printful, the print-on-demand fulfillment company founded in Riga, now operates facilities across three continents and serves millions of customers worldwide. Fintech platform Mintos has facilitated billions in peer-to-peer lending since its 2015 launch.

Other success stories include Giraffe360, whose property imaging technology is transforming real estate marketing across Europe, and the legacy of mobility companies with Latvian roots — including early team members who went on to build Bolt into a European super-app.

The country’s multilingual talent pool — most tech workers speak English, Russian, and Latvian fluently — and relatively low operating costs make it attractive for founders bootstrapping their way to product-market fit. Several international companies have also established development centers in Riga to tap into the local engineering talent.

It’s not Silicon Valley, and it’s not trying to be. But Latvia’s startup scene is proving you don’t need flashy PR to build real companies.

Latvian basketball star Kristaps Porzingis is heading to the Bay Area after a blockbuster trade sent him from the Boston Celtics to the Golden State Warriors, the teams announced Thursday. The move reunites the 7-foot-2 forward with one of the NBA’s most successful franchises and gives the Warriors a proven championship contributor.

Porzingis, 30, helped the Celtics capture the 2024 NBA Championship and has been a key part of Boston’s frontcourt rotation over the past two seasons. Known for his unique combination of size, shooting range, and shot-blocking ability, he averaged 18.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game this season while shooting 38% from three-point range.

The trade gives Golden State another versatile big man to pair with their core group, adding floor spacing and defensive length to a roster chasing another title. For Porzingis, it’s an opportunity to play in the Warriors’ system, known for maximizing the skills of players who can shoot and move without the ball.

“Kristaps brings championship experience and a skill set that fits perfectly with how we play,” Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. said in a statement. “We’re excited to welcome him to the Warriors family.”

Back home in Latvia, the news sparked celebration among basketball fans who have followed Porzingis’s journey from Liepāja to NBA stardom. Social media lit up with messages of pride and excitement about seeing their national hero in Warriors blue and gold.

Porzingis is expected to make his Warriors debut next week when Golden State hosts the Phoenix Suns at Chase Center.

Thousands gathered in Riga on Monday to mark the 107th anniversary of Latvia’s independence, declared on November 18, 1918. The capital came alive with patriotic fervor as residents and visitors alike joined in celebrations that stretched from afternoon into the evening.

The day’s centerpiece was the traditional torch procession, which wound its way through the city center as dusk fell. Participants carrying flaming torches created a river of light along Riga’s cobblestone streets, singing folk songs and patriotic hymns as they marched toward the Freedom Monument.

A special concert at the Latvian National Theatre featured performances by the National Symphony Orchestra and the State Choir, with works by Latvian composers forming the evening’s musical tribute. The program included pieces celebrating the nation’s resilience and cultural heritage, drawing standing ovations from the packed auditorium.

As night fell, thousands lined the banks of the Daugava River for a spectacular fireworks display. The pyrotechnics painted the sky in Latvia’s national colors of red and white, illuminating the city’s historic skyline and the iconic cable-stayed Vanšu Bridge.

“This day reminds us of the courage it took to declare our independence, and the work required to maintain it,” said Riga Mayor Vilnis Ķirsis during morning ceremonies at the Freedom Monument. “We honor not just our history, but our commitment to Latvia’s future.”

The celebrations concluded late into the evening, with cafes and restaurants across the city hosting their own gatherings, many decorated with Latvian flags and traditional oak wreaths symbolizing strength and endurance.

Riga Zoo celebrates its 113th birthday with the traditional “Animal Days” on October 11-12, 2025, offering special discounts to visitors whose names contain animal references.

Special Discount Event Returns to Riga

The Riga National Zoological Garden continues its beloved annual tradition of “Animal Days” this October. Visitors with animal names in their first or last names receive a 50% discount on admission tickets.

Those lucky enough to have animal names in both their first and last names get free entry to the zoo.

How to Claim Your Animal Days Discount

To receive the discount, visitors must present a valid ID at the ticket office. Names in languages other than Latvian are welcome — visitors just need to prove the connection to an animal by showing the meaning in a dictionary or reliable online source.

The Animal Days discount cannot be combined with other promotional offers.

The Annual Name Competition

Each year during Animal Days, there’s excitement about which animal will be most represented among visitor names. In recent years, various forms of “Dove” (Balodis) have dominated, but strong competition comes from Bears (Lāči), Swans (Gulbji), Deer (Brieži), Roosters (Gaiļi), Rabbits (Zaķi), and Lynx (Lūši).

Will Doves maintain their lead this year, or will another animal take the top spot??

Special Guided Tours Available

During Animal Days, visitors can join special open tours to meet Riga Zoo’s most famous residents. For an additional €5 on top of the admission price, guided tours offer fascinating facts and the chance to touch unique animal items.

Tour participants can feel camel or alpaca wool, flamingo feathers, porcupine quills, lion dreadlocks, and see hippo teeth, tiger whiskers, snake skin, seal pup fur, and reindeer antler velvet.

Tours run on both October 11 and 12 at 12:00 PM. Tickets are available at the zoo’s ticket office.

Visitor Information

Riga Zoo ticket offices operate from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on October 11-12. Visitors can continue walking the zoo paths until 7:00 PM.

The zoo invites everyone with an animal name — whether it’s a mammal, bird, insect, fish, or any other living creature — to join the birthday celebrations during Animal Days at Riga National Zoological Garden.

Animal Names Welcome in All Languages

International visitors shouldn’t worry about language barriers. Animal names in English, Russian, German, Lithuanian, Estonian or any other language qualify for the discount. Popular English animal names like Fox, Wolf, Bear, Bird, or Fish would all be eligible.

Simply bring your ID and be prepared to show the animal connection if asked.

The numbers tell part of the story, but the atmosphere told it all. EuroBasket 2025 in Riga drew 195,101 spectators across 31 games, averaging 6,294 fans per match at the Xiaomi Arena. But beyond the statistics lay something more profound—a celebration of basketball that united fans from across Europe in Latvia’s capital.

Record-Breaking Viewership Beyond the Arena

While Riga’s 11,000-capacity arena buzzed with energy, television audiences reached unprecedented levels. The tournament final became the most-watched basketball broadcast in German television history, with 5.5 million viewers tuning in to watch their team claim the European crown. Turkey’s passionate fanbase delivered even more remarkable numbers—18 million viewers watched the final, demonstrating basketball’s growing reach across the continent.

These viewing figures represented a doubling of the audience compared to the 2022 European Championship final in Berlin, highlighting the tournament’s elevated profile and the compelling basketball on display.

A Tapestry of European Support

The tournament created a unique atmosphere where national boundaries seemed to blur in shared appreciation for the sport. Lithuanian fans, despite their team’s quarterfinal exit, remained visible throughout the knockout stages, their green jerseys a constant presence in the stands. Their dedication exemplified the tournament’s spirit—fans supporting not just their nations, but great basketball itself.

Greek supporters brought their trademark intensity to every match, creating walls of blue and white that made the arena pulse with Mediterranean passion. When Greece secured bronze, their fans’ celebrations echoed through Riga’s streets, turning the city into an extension of the arena experience.

German fans arrived as underdogs and left as champions, their journey from hopeful optimism to euphoric celebration providing one of the tournament’s most compelling narratives. Their measured confidence grew with each victory, culminating in scenes of pure joy when Dennis Schröder lifted the trophy.

More Than Just Basketball

The fan experience extended far beyond the arena walls. Riga’s fan zone attracted nearly 200,000 visitors throughout the tournament, creating a festival atmosphere in the heart of the city. From August 27 to September 14, the Latvian capital transformed into a continental basketball celebration.

International arrivals demonstrated the tournament’s magnetic pull—66 charter flights and private aircraft landed at Riga Airport during the knockout phase alone. Fans from across Europe made the journey, turning the championship into a genuine continental gathering.

Tournament organizers noted the diversity of support. “Even when Latvia faced Lithuania in the Round of 16, you could feel the arena split between passionate supporters,” explained tournament event manager Maruta Eglīte. “But it was respectful rivalry—fans appreciating great basketball regardless of nationality.”

Building Basketball’s Future

The tournament’s success with younger audiences proved particularly encouraging. Latvia Basketball Association general secretary Kaspars Cipruss emphasized how the championship sparked interest among new generations of fans. The profits from ticket sales will be invested directly in youth basketball development, ensuring the tournament’s legacy extends beyond two weeks of competition.

Group stage matches averaged 95,831 spectators—surpassing the 2015 figures despite different participating teams. This consistency across all tournament phases demonstrated genuine fan engagement rather than purely patriotic interest.

A Template for European Championships

The atmosphere created in Riga established new standards for European basketball championships. Ticket prices remained accessible—€79 for knockout matches and €100 for five-game group stage packages—proving that premium sporting events can maintain broad appeal.

“You could watch NBA stars for that price,” Cipruss noted. “Our theater doesn’t cost that little.”

The successful balance of competitive basketball, accessible pricing, and exceptional organization created an environment where fans felt part of something special. Television production quality matched the arena atmosphere, delivering the sport to millions across Europe with unprecedented clarity and engagement.

Looking Forward

As EuroBasket 2029 approaches—scheduled for Estonia, Spain, Slovenia, and Greece—the Riga model provides a roadmap. The combination of passionate local support, excellent facilities, and genuine appreciation for basketball excellence created memories that will endure long after the final buzzer.

The tournament proved that European basketball championships can transcend national boundaries, creating shared experiences that celebrate both competitive excellence and continental unity. In Riga, 195,101 fans didn’t just watch basketball—they participated in a celebration that reminded Europe why sport matters.

The legacy lives on in more than statistics. It continues in the three championship basketball hoops now permanently installed at Xiaomi Arena, in the equipment distributed to youth programs across Latvia, and in the memories of fans who witnessed something extraordinary—a tournament where the atmosphere matched the quality of basketball, creating the perfect stage for champions to emerge.

The annual ROADPOL Safety Days campaign launched across European Union member states this week, featuring intensified traffic enforcement and a special focus on achieving zero road fatalities on September 19.

Latvia’s State Police joined the Europe-wide initiative running from September 16-22, conducting enhanced traffic controls throughout the country. The campaign culminates Thursday with “European Day Without Road Accident Deaths and Serious Injuries.”

Vision Zero Drives European Cooperation

ROADPOL Safety Days represents the flagship annual campaign of the European road policing network. The initiative aims to eliminate road deaths entirely, building on the Vision Zero principle that no loss of life in traffic accidents is acceptable.

The campaign coincides with European Mobility Week and targets Europe’s persistent road safety challenge. An average of 70 people die daily on European roads, making coordinated enforcement critical for reducing casualties.

Latvia reported 83 road fatalities through September 15, compared to 74 during the same period last year. Over 2,600 people sustained injuries in more than 12,000 traffic incidents across the country.

Enhanced Enforcement Targets Multiple Risk Factors

State Police expanded their usual traffic monitoring to address several high-risk behaviors during the campaign week. Officers focus particularly on protecting vulnerable road users including cyclists, electric scooter riders, and motorcyclists.

Enforcement priorities include seat belt compliance, proper child restraint usage, and impaired driving detection. The comprehensive approach recognizes that road safety requires attention to multiple risk factors simultaneously.

Last year’s campaign in Latvia resulted in approximately 3,300 administrative traffic violations recorded by officers, plus over 12,000 additional violations captured through technical monitoring systems.

Technology Supports Traditional Policing

Modern enforcement combines officer presence with automated detection systems. Speed cameras, alcohol detection equipment, and drone surveillance complement traditional patrol methods throughout the week.

The multi-layered approach allows authorities to monitor larger areas while maintaining visible deterrent effects. Technical systems provide objective evidence while officers handle complex situations requiring judgment calls.

State Police emphasize that every road user bears responsibility for safety, regardless of their mode of transport. Pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers must all follow traffic regulations to prevent accidents.

Previous Results Show Mixed Progress

The 2024 campaign produced concerning statistics despite enforcement efforts. Four people died in road accidents during the weeklong period, with 816 total incidents injuring 104 individuals.

These numbers highlight the ongoing challenge of changing driver behavior and improving road safety culture. Enforcement alone cannot solve systemic issues requiring infrastructure improvements and education initiatives.

Latvia’s current fatality increase from 74 to 83 deaths reflects broader European trends. Summer vacation periods typically see higher accident rates due to increased travel and unfamiliar routes.

Regional Coordination Strengthens Impact

ROADPOL coordinates enforcement activities across multiple countries, preventing drivers from simply crossing borders to avoid controls. The synchronized approach maximizes deterrent effects throughout the European road network.

Member states share best practices and coordinate timing to create continent-wide awareness of road safety priorities. This collaboration proves particularly valuable for international freight transport and cross-border commuting corridors.

The European Commission supports ROADPOL initiatives as part of broader transport safety policies. Reducing road deaths contributes to economic productivity while preventing immeasurable human suffering.

Focus on Vulnerable Road Users

This year’s campaign pays special attention to protecting cyclists, motorcyclists, and electric scooter users. These road users face disproportionate risks due to limited physical protection during collisions.

Urban areas see increasing numbers of alternative transport users, requiring updated enforcement approaches. Police monitor bike lane violations, intersection safety, and proper equipment usage among these groups.

The rise of electric mobility devices creates new enforcement challenges. Officers must understand regulations governing e-scooters, e-bikes, and other emerging transportation technologies.

Public Awareness Complements Enforcement

ROADPOL Safety Days combines enforcement with education campaigns urging behavioral changes. Media coverage and social media outreach remind citizens about their personal responsibility for road safety.

The campaign’s messaging emphasizes that accidents can happen instantly, making prevention crucial. Simple actions like wearing seat belts, avoiding distractions, and following speed limits save lives daily.

Police encourage all road users to rethink their behavior and consider how their actions affect others. Creating a culture of mutual respect and caution requires individual commitment from every traffic participant.

Data Drives Future Improvements

Detailed statistics from each year’s campaign inform future enforcement strategies and policy development. Analyzing violation patterns helps authorities allocate resources more effectively.

The comprehensive data collection enables evidence-based decision making about infrastructure investments, speed limit adjustments, and technology deployment. This scientific approach improves intervention effectiveness over time.

International data sharing allows smaller countries like Latvia to benefit from larger nations’ research and development efforts. Common challenges require collaborative solutions across borders.

Looking Beyond Enforcement Week

While the concentrated campaign creates heightened awareness, sustainable road safety requires year-round commitment. The week-long focus must translate into lasting behavioral changes and policy improvements.

Infrastructure development, vehicle safety technology, and emergency response capabilities all contribute to reducing road deaths. Enforcement represents just one component of comprehensive safety strategies.

The ultimate success measure remains simple: preventing unnecessary deaths and injuries on European roads. Every life saved justifies the coordinated international effort and resource investment.

ROADPOL Safety Days continues growing as a model for international cooperation on shared challenges. The initiative demonstrates how coordinated action can address problems transcending national boundaries.

The mayors of Riga, Tallinn, and Vilnius made a joint appeal to Google on September 16, demanding complete and up-to-date representation of cycling infrastructure across the three Baltic capitals in Google Maps.

Riga Mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs joined his counterparts Jevgeni Ossinovski from Tallinn and Valdas Benkunskas from Vilnius in the unprecedented regional collaboration targeting the tech giant’s mapping service.

The initiative addresses a growing frustration among Baltic cities that have invested heavily in cycling infrastructure over the past decade, only to see their efforts remain invisible in the world’s most popular navigation app.

Riga’s Cycling Revolution

Riga has built 165 kilometers of bike lanes in the last ten years — the most extensive network among the three Baltic capitals. The Latvian capital’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility has transformed entire districts, creating dedicated cycling corridors that connect residential areas to business centers.

Despite this massive infrastructure development, cyclists in Riga cannot rely on Google Maps for route planning. The app fails to recognize bike lanes, forcing users to navigate using incomplete information or alternative mapping services.

“We have invested significantly in cycling infrastructure to enable residents to move safely, conveniently, and environmentally sustainably,” the mayors wrote in their joint letter. “However, this infrastructure is not reflected in the digital space, making it invisible to many users and preventing adequate trip planning.”

Digital Invisibility Problem

The absence of bike lane data in Google Maps creates multiple problems for Riga’s cycling community. Tourists visiting the city struggle to navigate the extensive network, while locals cannot optimize their daily commutes using the world’s most popular mapping platform.

Urban mobility experts emphasize that digital representation is crucial for infrastructure utilization. When bike lanes don’t appear on widely-used navigation apps, people are less likely to discover and use them.

The mayors have already provided Google with all necessary data about their cycling networks. They’re now demanding immediate integration and real-time updates when new infrastructure comes online.

Regional Cooperation Strategy

The joint appeal represents a new approach to dealing with international tech companies. Rather than individual city requests that often go unanswered, the Baltic mayors are leveraging collective pressure.

Tallinn has repeatedly attempted to contact Google about bike lane representation without success. Mayor Ossinovski noted that Google’s corporate structure makes it difficult to reach decision-makers who can authorize map updates.

“Google is such a peculiar organization that you don’t get an answer from there,” Ossinovski told Estonian media. “Our belief is that with an appeal at the political level, the response could be different this time.”

Infrastructure Quality Concerns

While the mayors push for digital recognition, cycling advocates acknowledge that infrastructure quality varies across the Baltic capitals. In Tallinn, well-segregated bike paths sometimes abruptly end at sidewalks or merge with vehicle traffic.

Urban mobility expert Tõnis Savi suggests that some Baltic cycling infrastructure may not meet Google’s standards for inclusion in their mapping service.

“If we look at where and what these cycle routes are, then there’s nothing to be done. Quite a large part of them actually do not meet standards or the city’s own goals as set,” Savi said.

However, Riga’s cycling network generally maintains higher continuity standards than its Baltic neighbors, with most routes offering protected separation from vehicle traffic.

Comparison with Other Cities

The Baltic capitals lag behind other European cities in digital cycling infrastructure representation. Helsinki, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam have had their bike networks fully integrated into Google Maps for years.

This digital divide affects tourism and urban planning. Cities with visible cycling infrastructure in navigation apps see higher bike usage rates and better integration with public transportation systems.

The mayors argue that their cities deserve equal treatment, especially given their substantial infrastructure investments and growing cycling communities.

Future Expansion Plans

All three Baltic capitals plan to expand their cycling networks significantly in coming years. Riga has announced plans for additional protected bike lanes connecting outer districts to the city center.

The mayors emphasize that future infrastructure development should immediately appear in Google Maps, rather than requiring separate appeals for each project.

“We requested that in the future, changes would be reflected in the application in a timely manner,” they wrote in their joint statement.

Economic and Safety Impact

Proper digital representation of cycling infrastructure has economic implications. Cities with comprehensive bike lane mapping see increased tourism from cycling enthusiasts and higher property values along cycling corridors.

Safety also improves when navigation apps can direct cyclists to protected infrastructure rather than busy streets. Google Maps typically routes cyclists to quieter side streets when dedicated infrastructure isn’t mapped.

The Baltic capitals argue that accurate digital mapping is essential for achieving their sustainable transportation goals and maximizing return on infrastructure investments.

Tech Company Accountability

The joint appeal highlights broader questions about tech company responsibility for accurate civic infrastructure representation. As Google Maps becomes increasingly central to urban navigation, cities argue they deserve responsive service for infrastructure updates.

The Baltic mayors’ coordinated approach could serve as a model for other regions frustrated with tech companies’ slow response to municipal requests.

Their letter emphasizes that proper bike lane representation supports public health, environmental goals, and economic development — priorities that align with Google’s stated corporate values.

Regional Cycling Growth

Cycling culture has exploded across the Baltics in recent years. Tallinn organizes regular Tour D’Öö evening cycling events that attract hundreds of participants. Riga hosts similar community rides that showcase the city’s expanding network.

Vilnius has seen dramatic increases in cycling participation, particularly among young professionals commuting to tech sector jobs. The Lithuanian capital’s 170 kilometers of bike lanes reflect this growing demand.

This regional cycling boom makes the Google Maps gap more frustrating for local officials who see digital representation as crucial for continued growth.

FIBA EuroBasket 2025 concluded in spectacular fashion at Xiaomi Arena on September 14, with Germany capturing their second continental title in a thrilling 88-83 victory over Türkiye in front of 11,000 passionate fans.

The championship capped off three weeks of elite basketball across four host nations, with Riga serving as the tournament’s centerpiece for the knockout phases. From the Round of 16 through the final, the Latvian capital provided the perfect stage for European basketball’s most prestigious event.

Germany’s Championship Run

Dennis Schroder led Germany to glory, earning tournament MVP honors after averaging 20.3 points and 7.2 assists throughout the competition. The Sacramento Kings guard delivered when it mattered most, recording 16 points and a championship-record 12 assists in the final.

“This is the best team I’ve ever played with,” Schroder said after the victory. “We want to keep up this standard and win more awards.”

Germany’s triumph makes them just the fourth nation in basketball history to hold both the FIBA World Cup and EuroBasket titles simultaneously, joining the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and Spain. They won the World Cup in 2023 and now add the European crown to complete a remarkable two-year run.

Franz Wagner provided crucial support throughout the tournament, earning All-Star Five recognition alongside Schroder. The duo’s chemistry proved decisive in Germany’s unbeaten march through the knockout stages.

Isaac Bonga emerged as the unlikely hero in the final, scoring a tournament-high 20 points when Germany needed it most. His two clutch three-pointers in the fourth quarter and crucial offensive rebound with 30 seconds remaining sealed the championship.

Knockouts Delivered Drama

The tournament’s knockout phase in Riga provided non-stop excitement from the Round of 16 onwards. Host nation Latvia’s quarterfinal appearance energized the crowd, though they fell short against eventual bronze medalists Greece.

The semifinals produced contrasting results. Germany dismantled Finland 98-86 behind balanced scoring and superior depth, while Türkiye shocked Greece 94-68 to reach their first final since 2001.

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Greece bounced back in the bronze medal game, defeating Finland 92-89 in another thriller. The Milwaukee Bucks star delivered 30 points and 17 rebounds to finally capture his first international medal.

“This is probably the greatest accomplishment I have ever accomplished as an athlete,” the Greek Freak said. “When you are able to make 12 million Greeks happy and inspire the next generation, this is the biggest thing ever.”

The Final: A Championship Classic

Sunday’s final lived up to every expectation. Türkiye, led by Alperen Sengun’s 28 points, matched Germany shot-for-shot through 40 minutes of basketball brilliance. The game featured 15 lead changes and 11 ties, with neither team able to build a comfortable advantage.

Germany trailed for 24 minutes but never panicked. Schroder took control in the final minute, hitting a crucial layup for the lead before adding a mid-range jumper that proved decisive.

“We never shy away from the big moments,” Schroder explained. “It’s not just Franz, it’s not just me, it’s the whole team.”

Türkiye’s heartbreak continued a pattern of final defeats, dropping their championship game record to 0-3 after previous losses in 2001 and at the 2010 World Cup.

Riga: The Perfect Host

Xiaomi Arena proved an exceptional venue for European basketball’s premier event. The 11,200-seat arena on Skanstes Street created an electric atmosphere throughout the knockout phase, with fans from across Europe creating a carnival environment.

Latvia’s preparation for the tournament included special urban decorations and comprehensive visitor guides, showcasing the nation’s commitment to delivering a world-class experience. The sold-out crowds for every knockout game demonstrated Riga’s enthusiasm for top-level basketball.

The tournament’s success in Riga extends beyond the games themselves. International visitors experienced Latvian culture and hospitality, while local fans witnessed basketball at its highest level. The economic impact and global exposure provided lasting benefits for the host city.

Final Standings and Awards

Germany’s championship completed the final tournament standings:

Germany

Türkiye

Greece

Finland

Lithuania

Poland

Slovenia

Georgia

The All-Star Five featured MVP Dennis Schroder and Franz Wagner (Germany), Alperen Sengun (Türkiye), Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece), and Luka Doncic (Slovenia).

Tournament Legacy

EuroBasket 2025 will be remembered for Germany’s dominant championship run and Riga’s exceptional hosting. The tournament showcased European basketball’s depth and quality, with traditional powers like Germany and Greece sharing the podium with rising programs like Finland.

For Germany, the title represents the pinnacle of a golden generation that has now conquered both continental and global competition. Their success provides a blueprint for sustained excellence in international basketball.

Riga’s successful hosting of the knockout phase positions the city among Europe’s premier basketball venues. The passionate crowds and seamless organization created memories that will last long after the final buzzer.

As the confetti settled at Xiaomi Arena, one thing became clear: EuroBasket 2025 delivered everything European basketball promised and more. Germany earned their place in history, while Riga proved itself as a championship-caliber host city ready for future marquee events.

Kristaps Porziņģis delivered a monster 34-point, 19-rebound performance, but Lithuania eliminated Latvia from EuroBasket 2025 with an 88-79 victory at Xiaomi Arena on September 6.

The defeat ended Latvia’s tournament on home soil and marked the final game of Luca Banchi’s coaching era.

Velička Dominates Early

Lithuania’s Arnas Velička set the tone from the opening tip. The 25-year-old guard knocked down three early three-pointers, including one following an unsportsmanlike foul on Artūrs Kurucs, to give Lithuania a 14-6 advantage.

Latvia responded through Porziņģis and Rihards Lomažs, who combined for 10 first-quarter points from various positions. However, Lithuania’s superior rebounding and second-chance opportunities helped them maintain control, leading 28-18 after the opening period.

The visitors dominated the paint early, outscoring Latvia 18-4 in that area while controlling the offensive glass 13-6 in the first quarter.

Lithuania Builds Cushion

Rolands Šmits sparked Latvia’s second-quarter rally with back-to-back buckets, cutting the deficit to four points. Lomažs continued his hot shooting, trimming Lithuania’s lead to just two points at one stage.

But Lithuania’s balanced attack and aggressive defense kept them ahead. The visitors utilized double teams on Porziņģis while forcing Latvia into early foul trouble. Lithuania’s consistent free throw shooting and timely three-pointers from distance helped them maintain a 47-37 halftime advantage.

Porziņģis registered his first double-double of the tournament by halftime, tallying 16 points and 10 rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.

Third Quarter Turning Point

Latvia opened the second half with renewed energy. Artūrs Žagars scored immediately after the break, followed by a Porziņģis putback of his own miss. Šmits continued his strong play in the paint, drawing fouls and converting opportunities.

With 7:07 remaining in the third quarter, Žagars attacked Jonas Valančūnas, using a pump fake before scooping in a layup that cut Lithuania’s lead to eight points.

Porziņģis connected on a long three-pointer but failed to get back on defense, allowing Ažuolas Tubelis to score at the buzzer and extend Lithuania’s lead to 66-54 entering the final period.

Fourth Quarter Drama

The final quarter became a foul-filled affair that ultimately decided Latvia’s fate. Dāvis Bertāns, Artūrs Kurucs, and eventually Porziņģis all fouled out with five personal fouls, severely limiting Latvia’s options.

Despite the foul trouble, Latvia mounted a late charge. Bertāns hit a crucial three-pointer to cut the deficit to seven points with 3:44 remaining. Lomažs followed with back-to-back three-pointers that brought Latvia within five at 82-77.

But Lithuania’s experienced execution down the stretch proved decisive. Tubelis and Velička made key plays to prevent any Latvian comeback attempt.

Statistical Standouts

Porziņģis became the first player in 30 years to combine for 30+ points and 15+ rebounds in a single EuroBasket game. His 34 points tied his own Latvian record for most points in a EuroBasket game.

Lomažs finished with 21 points on efficient shooting, including 4-of-9 from three-point range. He provided Latvia’s most consistent offensive threat alongside Porziņģis throughout the contest.

For Lithuania, Velička recorded 21 points and 11 assists, becoming only the third Lithuanian player with 10+ assists in a EuroBasket knockout game. Tubelis added 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Deividas Sirvydis contributed 18 points off the bench.

Officiating Controversy

Latvia was whistled for 22 fouls in the second half, compared to Lithuania’s 14 for the entire game. The disparity became particularly problematic in the fourth quarter when three Latvian starters fouled out.

Several borderline calls went against the hosts, including technical fouls that helped Lithuania maintain their advantage during crucial stretches.

End of an Era

The loss marked the final game of Luca Banchi’s tenure as Latvia’s head coach. Under his leadership, Latvia qualified for their first World Cup and finished fifth at the 2023 tournament in Manila.

However, the past two major tournaments on home soil in Riga ended in disappointing fashion, with losses to Brazil and now Lithuania eliminating Latvia earlier than expected.

“We were in a bit of a rush, not our best day,” Banchi said after the game. “They played very aggressively. Sometimes the ball becomes a little bit heavier.”

Looking Ahead

Lithuania improves to a perfect record through the knockout stages . Their balanced scoring attack and defensive intensity make them legitimate contenders for a medal.

For Latvia, questions remain about the future direction of the program. The core group of players is aging, and developing the next generation becomes crucial for sustained success.

Dairis Bertāns reflected on the emotional toll of the defeat: “A lot about managing and controlling emotions. This game reminded me of the first game, with Turkey. We wanted to go all the way, so it’s disappointing. It’s a lot harder to chase than to be ahead.”

The 11,000 fans at Xiaomi Arena provided incredible support throughout, but even their energy couldn’t lift Latvia past a determined Lithuanian squad that executed when it mattered most.
