The update will enable DC-HSPA, (Dual-Cell High Speed Packet Access), which gives theoretical speeds of up to 42Mbps, by doubling up cell capacity to users when browsing the web.

Just which 'Major Cities' are first on the upgrade list, O2 weren't prepared to confirm, although London, Birmingham and Manchester are likely candidates.

Whilst the update is not 4G, it is a significant update, and a boost to O2 as the networks battle to provide the best data network possible.

Three have also confirmed that they will be adding DC-HSPA to their network during the Summer, as are T-Mobile and Orange later in the year. Vodafone have already enabled this on their network, although the top speed is limited to 28.8Mbps, and there are currently no plans to increase the speed any higher. Potentially, HSPA networks can be increased up to 337Mbps, with implementation of HSPA+.

To use the service, you will need a DC-HSPA capable device, currently that includes the New iPad, and the Nokia Lumia 900. Further handsets supporting DC-HSPA are expected to be launched later in the year.

Launched in July 2011, O2 Priority Moments has served up over 3,400 offers from more than 300 brands, offering savings of over £7.5m to O2's 22 million customers. Brands on offer have included Ocado, HMV, Odeon, BHS, Toni & Guy and Accesorize.

The new campaign seeks to build on the success to date of Priority Moments by getting customers to suggest new brands for the campaign. To make suggestions, customers can post on the O2 Facebook page, or via Twitter, using the hashtag #o2prioritymoments.

“Priority Moments is all about creating great experiences and adding value for our customers,” said Sally Cowdry, O2 Marketing and Consumer Director. “Now we want to take that a step further by asking them to tell us what brands they would like us to approach for new offers via Priority Moments. We recognize that times are tough and budgets are tight across many UK households so this is a further demonstration of how we are listening to our customers and promising to deliver on their behalf. So whether it is helping towards a family day out or providing extra value for a shopping trip we will be campaigning to provide more great offers for O2 customers.”

O2 offer Priority Moments to any O2 customer using a WAP enabled mobile phone, as well as a free application for the iPhone and Android devices. Initially the service will launch on the A330 Airbus planes, with London to New York the first route to benefit from the upgrade.

Virgin also state that they hope to increase availability of inflight mobile phone calls on 17 planes servicing 10 routes, by the end of the year.

As well as being able to make calls, passengers will be able to send and receive text messages, and browse the web. However, due to bandwidth limitations, only basic browsing will be available. Virgin will be using Aeromobile, part owned by Panasonic to provide the service. They hope to be able to upgrade the package to allow a richer media streaming experience when web browsing.

British Airways also offer passengers access to the internet from their phones, as well as being able to send and receive texts, but they do not offer inflight calling.

There will be some limitations on when the service can be used; phones will be banned during take off and landing, and current U.S. Legislation states that mobile phones need to be turned 250 miles from their airspace.

In addition to inflight calls on the Airbus A330, Virgin are also hoping to add a full WiFi service to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which they hope to have in service from 2014.

Virgin Atlantic's Chief Operating Officer, Steve Griffiths, said that Virgin Atlantic were looking to install services that customers actually wanted, rather than just adding technology for the sake of it. He said “We have listened to what customers want and connectivity in the air is always on the wish list. Many people will have experienced that moment when you are about to take off on a 10 hour flight and you need to send an important message to the office.”

The upgrade to the Airbus A330 to allow inflight calls is part of an overall £100 million upgrade, which will also add USB ports for charging consumer gadgets, as well as improved touchscreen technology.

The cost of using the service will be charged at customer standard roaming rates. Currently, only Vodafone and O2 have agreements in place to allow their customers to use the service.

Calls for contract and business users will be charged a one-off connection fee of 50p, with the rest of the call coming from inclusive monthly allowances when travelling through Europe.

Prepay customers will also benefit from the £1.99 per day data charge, but for calls they will pay the standard new European rates, which are currently set to 29p per minute to make a call, and 8p per minute to receive a call. These roaming rates will be confirmed from the 1st June. However, the rates will not apply to O2 PAYG users who use a BlackBerry handset.

O2 state that O2 Travel was launched in response to customer needs when travelling abroad. Demand for mobile internet usage has grown more than 100% a year, whilst 60% of people who use the mobile internet in the UK, will also do so when on holiday. The most popular sites for internet users were Facebook, Google and the BBC News site. The most popular countries for calling back to the UK were from Spain and France.

“We know people want to be able to relax and enjoy their holidays without worrying about complicated phone charges,” said Sally Cowdry, Marketing and Consumer Director for O2. “With simple charges and a generous 25MB data bundle, O2 Travel provides a great way for our customers to keep in touch and share their holiday moments with family and friends without having to worry about the costs.”

For more details on O2 Travel, and confirmation on the rates, see o2.co.uk/international for more.

Four million customers have signed up to the service in the last 6 months, as more users sign in to take advantage of special offers from leading brands. According to O2, this gives advertisers the same market as advertising with top TV programmes such as Britain's Got Talent.

The figure shows that almost half of the active O2 userbase has signed in to the service, receiving news, updates and promotions from the likes of House of Fraser, Bulmers Cider and the Co-Operative.

The way O2 More works is users sign in to receive the offers, listing things that are of interest. O2 then pass this information forward to companies, so users only receive updates about relevant subjects.

The service, which is just for O2 customers, only sends out one message a day, and ties in with other services from O2 such as Priority Moments and O2 WiFi. The popularity behind smartphones is a driving factor behind the growth of O2 More, as is the increased interest from consumers in receiving special offers tailored to their own particular tastes.

“We saw from a recent IAB Mobile Adspend Study that the industry is growing at an incredibly fast rate and our sector in particular grew a huge 241% last year,” said O2 Media Managing Director, Claire Valoti. “We know the appetite is there from agencies and clients for engaging with consumers directly on their mobile devices. We have been working hard to grow our audience, to ensure that our data is the best in the industry and develop and evolve our redemption and measurement.”

She added: “O2 More has evolved from a straight messaging service to a rich media service that now includes location-based work and often is delivered in tandem with other O2 services such as O2 WiFi and Priority Moments from O2. It makes our identity and proposition almost unique in the market today.”
