The RIN, the Institute of Physics (IOP), Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP) and the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) have recently published a set of case studies which provide a detailed analysis of how researchers in the physical sciences discover, use, create and manage their information resources.

The RIN has completed a second series of case studies to provide a detailed analysis of how humanities’ researchers discover, use, create and manage their information resources.

This project focuses on the behaviours and needs of researchers working in a number of subject or disciplinary areas in the humanities. They follow the ﬁrst round of case studies in the life sciences (November 2009).

In recent years, publishers, librarians and academics have seized the opportunities offered by the electronic publication of scholarly journals. Despite the popularity of e-journals, however, content continues to be published, acquired and used in physical printed form.

In the UK, we are still some way from a wholly electronic journal environment. This study is prompted by a concern that the retention of both printed and e-journal formats adds unnecessary costs throughout the supply chain from publisher to library to user.
