Seeing Bill Gates In Person

I just got back from hearing Bill Gates speak in person at Pomona College about the work he is doing with his Foundation. The event, sponsored by The Annenberg Leadership & Management Speakers series at Harvey Mudd College & The Distinguished Lecture Series at Pomona College, was a hit with over 2,000 in attendance! The event was held at the Bridges Auditorium at Pomona College and was quite an experience. It sure was something to be in the presence of a man who is currently worth over 58 Billion dollars and who is currently the world’s 2nd richest person!

Interviewed by Maria Klawe, president of Harvey Mudd College, Bill spoke on a variety of topics on his current philanthropy work. Some of the topics covered were his focus on vaccines, particularly the polio vaccine and about his work on HIV/AIDS, malaria, agriculture, and education. It truly was a privilege to hear Bill speak with such proximity; my seat being less than 50 feet away from the stage. More importantly, it was amazing to hear about the great work being done by Bill and his foundation.

It was quite amazing to see Bill so close in person. This event inspired me and I know it inspired others who attended. I look forward to seeing Bill again in the future….perhaps next time I’ll be able to get a photo with his signature? Now that would be legit.

About Bill Gates

Bill Gates is founder and former CEO of Microsoft. The tech visionary and business entrepreneur’s leadership–fueled by his long-held dream that millions might realize their potential through software–made Microsoft a personal computing powerhouse and household name.

In summer of 2008, Gates left his day-to-day role with Microsoft to focus on philanthropy. Maintaining that all lives have equal value no matter where they are lived, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation donates to expand opportunity to the world’s most disadvantaged people. Collaborating with grantees and partners, the Foundation is focused on programs in global health and education, HIV/AIDS, libraries and agriculture research.

The more I work with successful people, the more I realize they have certain things in common. Focus will enable you to complete projects well and on time with less energy, and give you the freedom to have some well deserved down time.

The Power of Focus

Focus is the concentration of attention or energy on something. And being focused is absolutely critical in doing business. The secret of success is to focus on doing fewer things very well. The more I work with successful people, the more I realize they have certain things in common – they are selective about the projects they undertake, they continually evaluate how they use their time, and they don’t allow themselves to be distracted by anything that takes them away from their stated goals or makes them less than productive. They choose their goals and projects wisely, write them down, and stay focused on them. A great book to read on focus, is a book called “Focus: The Future of Your Company Depends on it!” by Al Ries.

Of all the issues that can sabotage your success, lack of focus is near the top of the list. Most people try to do too many things less than perfectly, and go in too many different directions at once, resulting in dissipated energy, loss of time and, sometimes, loss of money. The reality is this: you can’t do everything. It’s impossible. And, you can only really do one thing at a time.

The 80:20 Rule

The ’80:20 Rule’, also called the ‘Pareto Principle‘, states that typically 80% of unfocussed effort generates only 20% of results. The remaining 80% of results are achieved with only 20% of the effort. You can make this principle work for you by spending time only on those few things that will bring you 80% of the results or outcomes you want.

Part of the problem is that we actually have too many choices available to us. So you have to figure out what will count the most. Decide what efforts will make the biggest difference, and then bring your attention in that direction. Yes, that means you’ll have to say no, and perhaps sacrifice some things that you’re currently doing.

Instead of responding freely to the things that show up every day, decide what really counts. And put your focus there. Say NO to everything else – including any unplanned or unscheduled diversions. Remove the items from your to-do list that take you away from getting the results you want to achieve and have nothing to do with taking you where you really want to go. The things that sap your energy, waste your time, and clutter your desk.

Focus will enable you to complete projects well and on time with less energy, and give you the freedom to have some well deserved down time. It will bring your effort, energy, time and creativity to those projects that really count. Focus on only the few things you are really interested in that will move you forward and truly make a difference, do them very, very well, and you can’t go wrong!

Take Massive Action!

As Anthony Robbins says, “Take Massive Action!” In order to be really successful, you have to take massive action! Here are some tips to get you started:

List your most important projects. What are two or three things that will make a big difference for you if you bring your full attention to them over the next three months?

This week, refocus your priorities and choose to bring your attention to your top three. List all your to-do’s, and eliminate any items that detract you from your goals. Narrow your priorities to a much shorter list.

Throughout your day and week, take short periods to reevaluate your priorities. Ask yourself: What’s the best use of my time right now?

Start each day with your number one priority. This is one of the most powerful ways to focus your attention. Choose a project that hasn’t been moving along as quickly as you would like, and decide to make it your number one priority until it is completed.

Look at where in your life you’re overcommitted. Resolve to either delegate or drop 25% of your commitments.

Act every day as if you were going on vacation the next day in order to build the muscle of making decisions quickly. You know how things get handled very quickly the day before you leave for your vacation? How much time could you free up by being that decisive every day?

Creating Strategic Alliances

Smart entrepreneurs know that strategic partnerships are the foundation for small business success. This article shows you how to create strategic alliances that will help your business beat the competition through access to partner resources, including markets, technologies, capital and people. Successful small business owners are realizing that if they are going to make it, they are going to need help, and one of the places they are finding help is through the formation of small business alliances.

What is a strategic alliance?

A strategic alliance is a cooperative agreement with another company to combine resources in a way that is beneficial to both parties. Unlike a merger, both companies maintain their individual identities, goals, mission, etc. The purpose of the alliance is simply to create opportunities for the two companies to work together to achieve a specified goal – promotion, purchasing, product manufacturing, or something else entirely.

Understandably, many small business owners are hesitant to partner with other businesses, particularly businesses that operate in the same industry. After all, what good could possibly come from helping the competition?

But suppose you own a pizza parlor and a competitor approached you about joining forces to place a combined order that would reduce the cost of your tomato sauce by 35%. Sure, your competitor would reduce his expenses, but so would you. More importantly, it would give both of your companies a competitive advantage over all the other pizza parlors in the area.

That’s the power of a strategic alliance. Both companies benefit and realize a marketplace advantage they would not have been able to achieve independently. It is about producing synergy.
Where can I find alliance partners?

The marketplace is full with potential partners for strategic alliances. Potential partners can be competitors, although they are more often found in businesses that provide complementary goods and services. Even so, don’t be afraid to look outside your industry for alliance partners. Sometimes very successful partnerships can be created between companies that have seemingly little in common.

Customers provide another source for strategic partners, particularly if you specialize in a business-to-business industry. Since a relationship already exists between the two companies, you should already have a level of trust and mutual respect for one another. If the alliance is successful, you’ve also given the customer an added incentive to continue to do business with your company.

How do I set-up a strategic alliance?

Strategic alliances can be as informal or formal as you like. Some alliances involve long-term written agreements while others operate on a largely informal basis. The important thing is to make sure that both partners are aware of what they are expected to do and what they can expect to receive as a result of the alliance. [1]

Regardless of how you decide to structure the alliance, it’s important for both partners to share the risks and the benefits. If your company is left to carry all the risk for half the benefit, then you’re probably being taken advantage of and need to look elsewhere for a new alliance partner.

Question: What is Web Hosting?

Web hosting service is a service that allows individuals and organizations to make their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a web server they own or lease for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. The more powerful the server, the faster it can serve up website pages. Slower, smaller servers may result in frustrating lag time for viewers. High traffic can also slow servers that are not powerful enough to handle high volumes of data exchange.

Tell Me Straight:

Q. Which Web Hosting Provider is the best?

A. Media Temple. Nothing else comes close.

The Benefits of using our web host (Media Temple)

Many clients ask us about the benefits of hosting their website with us as opposed to using some of the cheaper services like GoDaddy hosting. My answer to them is the added value your business receives when hosting with us.

Our fully managed web hosting fees cover:

• Web hosting with plenty of storage space and bandwidth
• Email hosting for POP/IMAP/Forwarder accounts (other companies may charge extra)
• mySQL database hosting for your dynamically driven website and blog (GoDaddy and Network Solutions charge about $10/month extra just for this)
• Monthly backups so that your data is safe and recoverable
• Uptime monitoring so that your site doesn’t go down for too long during high traffic situations (we watch your website minute-by-minute and if it goes down we take the necessary actions to bring it back up)
• Software and security updates

On top of this you get to use our premium tools at no additional charge like:

• 24/7 access to your Content Management System to login and make simple changes to your website
• Google Analytics with automated monthly traffic reports
• WordPress blog with enhanced blogging tools
• Photo gallery and form building tools
• Our proven set of SEO tools
• Excellent technical support via phone, email and online trouble tickets so that you can always talk to someone when you need help.

Why Our Hosting is Better

I agree that there are many other web hosting providers that only charge $5/month. However, we use Media Temple, the industry leader in web hosting. This ensures that your website and data stays secure and stable. The cheaper hosts use ‘shared’ environments where they place your website on the same server with thousands of other websites. If just one of those websites gets hacked into or attacked, then your website becomes compromised. Just one bad website can take the whole server down, causing downtime and slow loading times. We use dedicated Media Temple servers, eliminating this ‘bad neighbor’ syndrome.

Why is a high performance hosting plan worth the money?

Because page load speeds matter to everyone; slow pages loads are bad for visitors and they have a negative impact on Google SERPs (search engine results pages). They drive down your advertising revenues. In other words, buying a cheap shared web hosting plan is a penny-wise, pound foolish decision. It appears to save you money, but it really doesn’t. In fact, it could cost you dearly in lost revenue.

How can it reduce your revenues? Here’s how: For your site visitors, slow page loads gets old fast, so they leave quickly – perhaps faster than they might otherwise. This drives up your website bounce rate (which Google watches very closely) and it reduces the average page views per visitor (which Google also watches closely). That means fewer total page views and, presumably, less clicks on advertisements by your visitors.

It also has an effect on Google and your incoming traffic loads from search. Why? Because Google sees that your site isn’t doing much for your customers – they are leaving fast, perhaps faster than from other related sites they might be visiting to get similar information. So, they drop your site down in the SERPs, perhaps way down, which means fewer people see your site to begin with. If you choose a bad hosting provider that delivers slow page loads, then you get less total traffic from Google and you get fewer pages views from the visitors who do find you – and that translates directly into lower advertising and other revenues.[1]

Fully Managed Solution

Our hosting solutions are also ‘fully managed’ which means that we take care of all the software and security updates and ensure that everything is running smoothly so that you don’t have to worry about your website going down. If you host your site elsewhere, you have to take care of these issues on your own, usually requiring experience with a Linux webserver.

The L7 cocktail networking mixers are always FREE! and are an excellent way for busy, working professionals to meet other professionals for social and business networking opportunities. I, along with my co-workers and friends, have been to a handful of these events located from Santa Monica to Westwood to Downtown L.A., and they are great! So great in fact, that I have forged genuine friendships and business opportunities. The L7 events are for singles, couples and groups of friends and the usual age range is thirties and forties. Be sure to visit their website for the latest events in the L.A. area!

Personally, I like the L7 events because the people are down to earth and the events are always held at aesthetically-pleasing venues. I’ve made great personal and business connections and I plan to continue to make more. Definitely worth checking out!

History of The L7 Scene

L7 began in September 2003 as a way for young professionals from a cross-section of industries to meet socially or for business networking opportunities. Each month L7 hosts between five and ten events including cocktail networking, dinner/ holiday parties, wine tasting, cooking classes, recreational events and restaurant launch parties. They also partner with museums, theaters, the philharmonic and other businesses to bring concerts, special events and sporting events.

“Many have told us our simple concept is exactly what they’re looking for. A wise L7 member was once quoted saying, “L7 brings together people, culture, aesthetics, music, restaurants and style without the usual LA attitude.” -Kathrin Nolan, Founders of L7

About Kathrin

Kathrin Nolan is a native to So. Cal., serial entrepreneur and grunion hunter. Talking one day about the LA social scene, she and a friend took matters into their own hands and started organizing events to build a much needed sense of community in our beautiful city. How’s it going you ask? Come and see for yourself![1]

A global force in the field of human empowerment, Dr. Chopra is the prolific author of more than fifty-five books, including fourteen bestsellers on mind-body health, quantum mechanics, spirituality, and peace. Dr. Chopra’s books have been published in more than eighty-five languages. His New York Times bestseller Peace Is the Way won a prestigious Quill Award, and The Book of Secrets was awarded the grand prize at the 2005 Nautilus Book Awards; his bestselling novel, Jesus: A Story of Enlightenment, was released in 2008. He is a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle and Washington Post On Faith and contributes regularly to Intent.com and the Huffington Post.

The path outlined in The Soul of Leadership: Unlocking Your Potential For Greatness applies to any business, but the same principles are relevant in every community and area of life, from family and home to school, place of worship, and neighborhood. Awareness of ones own and others’ needs and a deeper understanding of ones leadership potential can make a profound change in the way one leads. Chopra combines spiritual wisdom with modern dynamic psychology with insights into group dynamics, loyalty, creativity, vision, security, and achievement. He utilizes examples of great leaders and a clear, concise breakdown of the virtues that a great leader must possess, plus the stories of ordinary people who have become successful visionaries. Watch a video of Deepak speaking about leadership lessons.

Chopra addresses the following:

Synchronicity: The ability to create good luck and find invisible support that carries one beyond predicted outcomes to a higher plane.

Emotional bonding: Clearing away toxic emotions so you can clearly understand your own specific needs, and those of others.

Awareness: A leader must continually ask the tough questions that underlie every challenge, such as Who am I? What do I want What does the situation demand?

Action oriented: This requires persistence and tenacity, but also the ability to view any situation with flexibility and humor

Responsibility: Responsible leadership includes choosing considered risks rather than reckless ones, walking the talk, having integrity and living up to your inner values.

Chopra contends an organization’s leader is its symbolic soul. He carried that theme through his hour-long Drucker Business Forum talk, emphasizing that good leaders (and happy people in general) are introspective and guided in their actions by a higher purpose.[1]

Speaker/Professor/Lecturer

Deepak Chopra’s popularity as an international presenter and keynote speaker is exemplified by an impressive list of honorariums. For more than a decade, he has participated as a lecturer at the Update in Internal Medicine event sponsored by Harvard Medical School’s Department of Continuing Education and the Department of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Chopra is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, an adjunct professor at Kellogg School of Management, and a senior scientist with the Gallup Organization.
(Wirtschaftswoche Magazine, Germany)

Making Your Web Site Work.

Eminent Web usability guru Jakob Nielsen offers his insights on how to make the Web work:

“If a Web site is not easy to use, people simply leave. But if a camera is not easy to use, people will figure it out because they hold a physical object in their hand that they’ve invested in,” says Nielsen.

Usability is often seen merely as a nice add-on for most software products, but with the Web it has become a critical success factor – a factor that is often widely disregarded.

“What we actually know from our studies is that the average user experience on the Web is that of failure,” says Nielsen.

Although the dot com crash was due to a variety of factors, Nielsen says when people have a bad experience on a commerce site they leave.

“People don’t spend most of their time trying to do new things. They will return to Web sites that they have found to be at least reasonably easy to use and go back, again and again to those sites.”

What Can A Webmaster Do?

The design expert says that there are two things that a site can do to improve its usability.

“You can run a very simple user test in three days… just get some real users in.”

The second method is professional analysis, which requires an expert with many years of experience to assess a Web site’s design and structure. As a professional web design firm, our programmers provide over 13 years of professional expertise. Our portfolio speaks for itself.

But many Web site managers still neglect to ensure the usability of their product, for multiple reasons.

“First is that they just neglect the entire issue because they think their own Web site is easy to use because they designed it so they don’t understand the need for usability testing,” says Nielsen.

“The second reason is that even if they recognize the need for usability, they think ‘we’ve got to bring in a team of five Ph. Ds, build a special laboratory with one way mirrors and test fifty users’ – no you don’t.”

The Web Is Getting Worse.

Since the Internet surfing experience exploded onto the scene, Nielsen thinks the Web has detiorated in quality.

“It has mainly gotten worse because the complexity has gone up in terms of all the things that can now be done — the number of Web sites, the number of things people are trying to accomplish on the Web.”

“In the old days is was just ‘let me write an article’ and the Web browser is actually fairly good at allowing you to read an article and link to the next article,” he added.[1]

The Solution

As internet users are increasingly impatient and intolerable, new methods of web development technology must be implemented to satisfy the present needs of viewers. Our firm partners-up with each and every one of our clients to ensure proper usability, use of navigation and traffic. We focus on generating results. When it comes to web design, SEO and marketing, we focus on quality—it’s that simple.

A website communicates the style, level of professionalism and theme of a business. It reveals

Business Branding & Image

A website communicates the style, level of professionalism and theme of a business. It reveals what a company is all about and having one is instrumental in today’s marketplace. When viewers visit a site, the amount of information, level of usability and functionality all go towards creating an impression on a potential customer.

Keep in mind that your website can often be the first point of contact to your business. What is the impression you want to give of your company? Often I visit websites that have poor navigation, or the graphical design is too complex and confusing thereby overpowering the actual message that is trying to be delivered. Often times the site looks as though the web site was created by an amateur.

These all give off bad impressions to the visitor, making them question the rest of your business as well. After all, if so little effort and consideration is given to this, their first contact with a customer, then how are their services and products?

Providing a first-class service or product is reflected through ALL of your contact with the customer. This includes forms that are photocopied to the point of un-readability, brochures that are obviously quickly created, business cards that have perforations around the edges, and websites that are poorly done. Is this the image you want to give to your customers?

Customer Service

Whether or not you are selling a tangible product, you want to be able to provide enhanced customer service that will give you a competitive edge in the market place. In being able to provide 24/7 access to information, forms, products, and marketing to your customers, you place yourself at a higher level of customer service than your competitors who do not have an internet presence.

You can do this by offering the following:

Detailed information about your company and your services.

Highlight menus, products, descriptions, etc.

Sell your product & services online with an online shopping cart.

Get leads online with easy to use quote forms.

Post business hours or a change in address/phone number.

Provide knowledge and industry related articles.

Reveal achievements, awards, testimonials, reviews and memberships.

Cost Savings

Companies that provide services such as catering to individuals and businesses would benefit greatly by allowing their customers to view their menu online and place orders online. This eliminates the need to send out menus, inform clients of changes in pricing or menu selections, as well as save time on the phone, email and/or fax answering questions and confirming orders.

Reduction of printing costs can be realized in many situations, including brochures, newsletters, patient information sheets, protocols, hand outs, etc. Many of these items are given to a client and end up in a file or in the garbage simply because we run out of room to keep them. Directing a client to a link on your website saves time and money.

Closing

In closing let me simply state that in this day and age, where people have little time, work long hours, have many commitments and little patience to spend a vast amount of effort in attempting communication, a website is the perfect opportunity for you to be available at all times for their convenience.

While I realize that not all of your customers and clients would use your website, it is a simple fact that more and more people are using the internet to conduct various forms of business. Are you willing to give up that market of potential clients?

The benefit of having a web site is like having a marketing promoter 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Why do I need a web site? What benefits will I gain from it?

These are the questions you need to ask yourself, and perhaps you are not sure of the answers. In the following article I will present to you the benefits of having a web site and how it will help you and your business.

Present Yourself….Well!

Prospective customers are more informed than ever due to the wealth of information available on the internet. Younger generations perform many daily functions via the internet that their parents never dreamed of.

When searching for a dentist for example, the ability to get a “feel” for the practice by viewing their website is critical. Even though a dental practice may never actually sell a product online, the ability to show prospective clients your services, extended training and features that your firm provides, your staff, extended information all combine to give your practice a modern, informative image.

When a potential customer searches the internet for a particular service or product, they can only find you if you are there. Many people, like myself, use the Yellow Pages as a last resort, simply because of the lack of information that is presented and the sheer amount of competition.

This change in the way that products and services are delivered, requires a business to have an online presence. For allowing customers to get an overall feel for your business, as well as to compare services and products without having to spend time on the phone and take time out of their work day to reach you during business hours.

Free Advertising

Are you currently advertising on TV, radio, Yellow Pages, etc.? In each of these instances your advertising message is limited, either by space or time limitations. You are trying to get your potential customer to call you or visit to get more information, to be able to convince them to visit you, to buy from you, or to use your services.

While these advertising strategies are an important part of your marketing campaign to get your message out there and to catch quick attention, however, where do they go when you have caught their attention?

24 Hour Marketing Tool

The benefit of having a web site is like having a marketing promoter 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your site can be referenced from your other advertising media, directing them to more extensive information. Your practice is now available at all times, selling for you for a minimum cost once past the initial layout to create the site. Basic maintenance and hosting fees are negligible when compared to other forms of advertising.

Learn about optimizing your email campaigns for the ever-growing population of mobile users.

Sending email that both looks good and delivers results can be a daunting task. If you thought that cross browser compatibility was tough (making sure your site looks the same in all browsers like IE, FireFox, Chrome, Safari, etc), well, email is even tougher. Add into the mix the growing popularity of smartphones, and now your brain is really scrambled.

But not to fret, there’s an app for it! Not an iPhone app, but an online service called LitmusApp. With Litmus you can submit a URL of your freshly deployed website, and Litmus will return screenshots of your site in all your target browsers and OS’s. Here are Rio, we use Litmus to test all of our sites before launch time.

The cool thing about Litmus (not to mention they offer limited, but still great, free accounts) is that you can also send in an email test. Simply login, click New Email Test, choose your target email clients and it will give you an email address for you to send your message to. After a few moments, it will display screenshots of your email in all the email programs you selected.

What a lifesaver! In the olden days, I would have to keep a test PC nearby with every modern version of Internet Explorer running so that I could perform my tests. This just was not an effective solution. It leaves out so many variants like Linux, Mac and the MANY versions of previous generation browsers out there. LitmusApp is a must have.

So, back to mobile email design: Litmus can handle 33 different email clients and 15 different spam filters during the time of this writing. Simply amazing. The list includes iPhone, Blackberry and Windows Mobile to boot. Check out some of the tips below and don’t forget to watch the Mobile Email Design Webinar at the bottom for even more information.

Mobile Email Design Best Practices

Plan ahead. Your content will likely be shorter and more direct with a clear call to action. Plan your mobile email strategy early so that you don’t end up spending more time going back to optimize later.

Think about subject lines. Many mobile devices only display a limited number of characters in the subject line, so keep it short or keep your most important words near the beginning of the line.

Get skinny. Use a single column and be sure your email looks good when the user is holding their phone vertically. You only have about 320px of width to play with so keep your email skinny for best results.

No squinting. Apple Developer Connection recommends your text size be about 18-22px in size for easiest readability. Don’t make your text size too small or your users will have to put on their glasses to read your email.

Make it easy. Don’t use tiny buttons that are impossible to tap easily with your finger. Don’t flood your email with long paragraphs of text that are hard to digest. Make engagement easy so that you don’t rub your audience the wrong way.

Let them know. Advertise the mobile version of your website so that your customers know that they can interact with you from their mobile device. Tell them that they can receive offers on their mobile.

Ask your audience. When subscribing or managing subscriptions, allow your users to opt-in to a special mobilized version of your emails and then send them email designed specifically for mobile devices.

Don’t over-optimize. If most of your subscribers use desktop email, then don’t overly optimize for mobile because you’ll be degrading the experience for the majority of users.

Don’t over-analyze. It is better to be “mobile aware” than to spend your nights analyzing and optimizing for every single device. Focus on building a sound universal mobile version, not several individual Blackberry/iPhone/Android versions.

Think about your boss! If you work for a design or development company, and you know your boss uses a Blackberry or Android, make sure that you optimize for his or her device or you might be sorry.

Watch the Mobile Email Design Webinar from LitmusApp to learn more about optimizing your mobile email campaigns. Over 1,000 people attended it this morning, and Chris Studabaker from ExactTarget did a great job with the presentation.
