Terry Doyle is a man with a vision for New Mexico's transportation future. Doyle is the Transportation Director for the Rio Metro Regional Transit District, which includes Bernalillo, Sandoval and Valencia counties. Trains, planes and automobiles all play a role in his duties, but so does keeping pace with the changing faces of Albuquerque and the surrounding metropolitan areas, and the people who live there.

On Thursday, June 21, 2018, the Rio Metro Regional Transit District encouraged people to Dump the Pump and ride public transit. As in incentive to try transit, Rio Metro held a Rail Runner monthly pass giveaway, and, along with other transit agencies from northern and central New Mexico, visited with commuters at the South Capitol Rail Runner Station in Santa Fe.

On  Monday, April 9, 2018, the Rio Metro Regional Transit District received an award for Excellence in Grant Management from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

For many low-income job seekers and employees in Bernalillo County, lack of transportation is a barrier to employment. Rio Metro Regional Transit District’s Job Access Reverse Commute Program, known as JARC, helps lift those barriers to transportation by matching people with and subsidizing (for a limited time) public transit and other types of transportation options.

New Mexicans’ appetite for chile is infamous. Santa Fe trader Josiah Gregg wrote about it in his “Commerce of the Prairies,” published in 1844. Similarly, a portion of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad – the Antonito, CO, to Santa Fe segment – was nicknamed the “Chili Line” (sic) starting in 1895 due to the dietary habits of New Mexicans.

Get away and enjoy! Rio Metro's Seniors Ride Free program is back! Every Wednesday from February through September 2018, seniors age 62+ can ride any New Mexico Rail Runner Express train at no cost. This is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to explore locations in Santa Fe and Albuquerque using public transportation.

Bernagene Shay gives the New Mexico Rail Runner Express Group Travel Program an “A.” The teacher from North Valley Academy used the Rail Runner last school year to transport two 8th Grade classes to Santa Fe for a tour of the New Mexico Museum of History.

Rio Metro, in partnership with the Pueblo of Isleta, is pleased to announce two new transit services beginning Monday, December 4, 2017. Bus route 208 will provide weekday bus service between Belen and Downtown Albuquerque, with stops in Los Lunas, Peralta, Bosque Farms and the Pueblo of Isleta. Rio Metro will also be bringing its Dial-a-Ride service to the Pueblo.

For tourists, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express is a journey into the past – Indian nations that have endured our droughts and heat for millennia, and Catholic communities created as much by church as state. Commuters riding to jobs in Santa Fe and Los Alamos see the present state of New Mexico affairs, but for students the train is a ride toward the future. Fortunately, the Rail Runner’s tracks pass by educational opportunities from Santa Fe in the north to southerly Valencia County.

Enchanted is a term frequently used to describe New Mexico, but there are those who believe “bewitched,” or “haunted” is a better description. Along the New Mexico Rail Runner Express route from Santa Fe to Belen there are places where ghost hunters gather to seek spirits, and whether one believes or not, these ghost seekers often have fascinating tales to tell.

This is a tale of two trains and one man devoted to preserving them. One train is Motor Car 190, that now resides in Belen. The other is steam locomotive No. 457, permanently parked in Mason City, Iowa. The link between them is Gene Green, an Army retiree and resident of Rio Communities.
