web 2.0: the update!

A while back I posted some Web 2.0 sites and links. Since them I've added quite a few more without listing them here:

Twitter: Quick 140 character updates that you can subscribe to via Mobile (SMS) or RSS.

Tumblr: Kinda like Twitter, kinda not. It is still based on short easy updates, but they're more in depth. You can post images, videos, audio, and other assorted snippets. Viewable online or in RSS.

Google Latitude: You can check this out on the right. Its my location based on my cell phone. I don't have GPS in my phone so its only an approximate location based on the information provided by the cellular tower I am using. Sometime I'm in the blue circle, sometimes I'm not, but its pretty close. You can also add me to Google Maps for Mobile by adding me as a friend, and you can also add it to iGoogle, once again, you'll have to add me as a friend.

US Airways Airbus A320, Flight 1549, has made an emergency landing in the Hudson River after a failed attempt to take off near Manhattan. There were 146 passengers and five crew on the flight to Charlotte from LaGuardia Airport. The plane took off at 3:26 PM EST (UTC-5) and went down minutes later. All aboard survived the landing.

The United States Coast Guard has reported that they have sent units to the scene of the incident, and that a nearby ferry was giving life jackets to survivors. According to witnesses, the plane landed in the river, making a large splash in the water, at a somewhat gradual angle.

"This looked like a controlled descent," said Bob Read, who witnessed the incident from his office.

A source told The Wall Street Journal that the plane initially was maneuvering to make an emergency landing at nearby Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, but lost too much altitude and had to ditch in the river.

Unconfirmed reports are citing the pilot as saying that the plane encountered a flock of geese and that some of them went into each of the jet's engines, leading to a loss of powered flight.

Clearly these terror-geese are an imminent and growing threat to this nation's security and they must be dealt with.

On a lighter note, awesome job by the pilots in attempting to land at other airports and finally landing in the best possible way on the Hudson River. They are truly heroes, having prevented absolutely no loss of life and only minor injuries in such a dangerous situation.

This is pretty neat, its some type of sports-device, branded with the Grand Theft Auto Logo. However, I have no idea how it got here. Actually, that's not completely true. The postman got it for me, but who gave it to him? And why? Can anyone shed some light on this? All I could find was that some places got this as a promotional item along with a press release. There is no reason they would send me that. So what gives?

So I live with a couple of jerks, who like to leave their computers on 24/7/365. To conserve power when these guys are away for hours on end, I shut off their idling computers. They don't really do anything important on them other than look at porn. I, on the other hand, nearly always shut off my computer, leaving it on when I'm not around only for legitimate reasons. I thought I could keep it Locked (Windows Key+L) and leave no way to have it shut down (including pressing the power button to initiate shutdown). That isn't the case, as there is a Fast User Switching option below the password box that, once clicked, shows a shut down options box on the next screen. Bah. So let's disable that box. Too bad, I don't know how. Instead, you can disable the Switch Accounts button in about five seconds of work. Here's how:

Hit Start and type regedit.exe and hit enter. Now we're in the Registry editor where we'll put in some text. Lets find the place to put it.
Using the menu tree on the left navigate to Computer > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies > System
On my screen I was looking at about 17 listed items. We're going to make a new one. Right click the body where the keys are listed. Select New then Select DWORD (32-bit) Value. It will come with with a New Item, change the name to HideFastUserSwitching (Make sure you don't put any spaces before or after the name, as it won't work.)
Now right click the item and select Modify. Change value data to 1 and click OK. The setting should already be Hexadecimal.
You should now have an item that says HideFastUserSwitching REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)
Close the Registry Editor and lock your computer with Windows+L. "Switch User" should no longer be present and therefore not allowing anyone to access the Shut Down menu on that screen.

Now the only problem you would have to worry about after a Lock is someone holding down the power button to have your computer to cut its own power, or having someone physically cut power to the system. If you find a solution to that, let me know. Guard dogs maybe?
