Bloomsburg University recently added the new Sutliff Hall that includes a finance lab. On the exterior of the lab is an impressive 59 foot ticker display. Inside the lab is a second 22 foot ticker along with a 2×1 video wall that contains 55 inch LCD displays. The video wall displays financial data charts and graphs while the ticker displays scroll stock quotes.

Located at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, FL is this 46 inch interactive display that tells the story of the Palmers, history of the Arnold Palmer Invitational Golf Tournament, and recognizes its partners. The client created their own content on the display using the new digital signage content management software.

The new Central State University Finance Lab has the potential to serve 450 business, accounting, finance, and marketing students. The lab includes a 56 foot full color LED Ticker that starts in the hallway and wraps into the finance lab. There are 3 additional 55 inch LCD Screens that display market data on charts and graphs. The room has 20 workstations for students and a professor station. The state-of-the-art finance lab will allow students and faculty to monitor market fluctuations driven by corporate earnings reports, as well as man-made and natural disasters that impact commodities.

Baker College recently opened a new finance lab to provide students with the opportunity to use the latest tools to learn from hands on instruction rather then the outdated lectures. In addition to the pictured 3×2 Video Wall with ultra narrow bezels, the lab includes an Interactive Market Wall, World Time Clocks, and digital signs displaying live TV.

Real World Application of Morningstar Direct

Founded in 1881, Marquette University was the first undergraduate school in the world to become a partner with the CFA Institute.

The Applied Investment Program features a set of three student-managed portfolios, as well as a curriculum designed to prepare students to become Chartered Financial Analysts (CFAs). The research room has several workstations equipped with Morningstar Direct, similar to an investment company’s trading room. Students can research individual stocks (historical and in real-time) and perform solid, fundamental analysis on thousands of companies. The platform’s ownership information allows students to see what securities investment companies and hedge funds are buying and selling.

Because the program manages real money, the managers want to know specifically why the funds have out- or under-performed the benchmark. Each month they run attribution analysis and performance reports, where computations like tracking error are done in a manner that is consistent with the CFA standard, GIPS (global investment performance standards).

David Krause, Finance Professor & Director of Applied Investment Management Program, is presently studying the portfolio diversification benefits of global infrastructure investments. He created a data array to test whether infrastructure assets maintained typically low correlations during the 2008 financial meltdown. He used custom calculations to generate a 24-month rolling correlation coefficient from the Morgan Stanley World indexes, and found that the correlations nearly went to 1.00 – and that water utilities only went to 0.77. In 2001, the correlations of infrastructure assets were only 0.3. The entire effort took him about an hour by leveraging Morningstar Direct, whereas five years ago this would have taken a week and wouldn’t have been as up-to-date.

The University of Colorado in Denver recently opened a new finance lab that includes a 54 foot 32 pixel high Premium Ticker Display. The lab is a showcase for the business school along with downtown Denver as a glass wall is open to downtown making the lab and the large Ticker Display visible from the street.
