#20 The Mid July Show

Welcome to the Mid July edition of Riseup! Radio, that’s right! Mid July becoz we are doing (or at least attempting to) TWO shows a month!

On this months mid show we’ve enlisted the skills of a new producer to boost your audio pleasure, we hope you like it.

On the show expect to hear music from Fists and new music from Bonsai Projects new album, as well as tons of news including: No Borders visit to the ‘Jungle’ at Calais where refugees are waiting in limbo; how to set up a new housing co-op; news of a new local food co-op and a report from the first Refugee forum skill share.

We deal with this first in a series of summer heatwaves by getting drunk on the tarmac of May’s back yard, passing round an I-River and plugging in some cracking pre-recorded content, including a wordy discussion about the plight and potential of the workers who keep the wheels turning. Hi folks. Can you believe the weather? In this first June installation, we cover a jolly folk dance day that happened in Forest Fields on perhaps the only rainy weekend of last month. Nevertheless, lots of people, music and dance, with a tastefully anti-authoritarian undercurrent.

We’re also hanging out at the occupied JB Spray factory building, where we talk about squatting and the dangers of racist party the BNP’s election campaigning. And we go ‘daan sarf’ to meet some rather motivated city folk, who claim to be in the process of setting up no fewer than eleven workers’ co-ops one one estate!

Marsh Farm Outreach is a self managed workers co-operative based on the Marsh Farm Estate, Luton, made up of 12 local people all working mainly in a voluntary capacity to design, develop, promote and fight for community-driven solutions to poverty, social exclusion and dependency instead of sustaining the top down gravy train of the community regeneration and economic development industry.

Marsh Farm is also home to the Leviticus Collective, a community sound system and stand up fer yer rights collective, specialising in dance parties and festivals, and community, workplace and housing projects. With about 50 active members living in Luton, hundreds attend their community dances with stances.

‘For us it’s all about grabbing land by all non-violent means necessary and building alternatives on that land.’

The Fresh project now occupies a large number of plots at the St Anns allotments, and produces organic soft fruit and vegetables for a seasonal veg box scheme. Fresh also run short courses in organic growing, which have provided practical educational opportunities for adults. Participants on the ‘Fresh Ingredients’ course spent one day a week in the gardens, and one day a week in the kitchen learning ways of preparing the kinds of fresh food we are likely to get off an allotment. I was allowed into the wooden shack-classroom at the top of their impressive site, and had a chat with people in the penultimate week of their course, about the pros and cons of gardening with, or without chemicals. We also talked about market forces and how accessible organic food is, as well as the land to grow it on. Are things changing?

People, it’s April 2009 and this month’s riseup! is a super effort. In our front lounge studio we were blessed with the talents of live musicians Posh Jay and Haiki, as our Lenton-based hosts plied us with hot tea and flapjack crumbs. We talked for hours about the hyped predictions of civil unrest, and the latest legislation to protect cops from being photographed while pro-actively attempting to crush any loose peppercorns of dissent. We also feature the forthcoming Coal Caravan, St Anns’ Fresh project, and some really good Notts electro. Have a listen, listen again, then tell someone else about it. Cheers!

The latest podcast fresh from the streets (well mainly living rooms actually) of Nottingham. This month we hear from the Zimbabwean opposition group about their protests in market square, Kirk gives us an update on the Shutdown H&K campaign. We talk to Martin from the animal rights movement and hear reports about the eviction and aftermath from last months occupation. Jacques gives us the latest installment of the green report which this month is all about GM. All this is broken up with music from lots of local artists including Geiom, The Kull and Martin the Livewire.
