The Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody of three weeks ago was but a teaser to whet appetites, but this week the God Empress Herself makes an emphatic return. And how! It has been three years since the first season burst out from obscurity to capture the imagination of an entire generation of otaku, and things have changed a lot since then. The franchise is no longer the surprise cult hit it started out as; it has become the most anticipated thing in the industry. The iconic dancing ED is a thing of the past. The assorted fan-created media is not as widespread as they used to be, even though they had a good long run. It may no longer be a one-of-a-kind series; it may instead be the original that spawned an entire genre of anime in the 21st century. But though these three years have brought about a host of changes from the heady days of 2006, there are some things that remain the same. And for one, it’s still the same Haruhi we came to love 3 years ago. The SOS Brigade is back for good.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu (2009), Episode <strike>12</strike> <strike>13</strike> 14: Endless Eight.

Coming off the events of Lone Island Syndrome, to Haruhi it is of course clear that summer vacation is the time to do all the fun stuff that is usually associated with it, and who better to enjoy summer vacation to the fullest with than with her friends? And this is but just one of the reasons she is so loved; she truly lives life to the fullest.

And first on the itinenary is a trip to the local swimming pool; which means another chance to showcase the girls in their flattering swimsuits, of course.

Though I’m wondering how Haruhi can keep her ribbon intact in the water; is it easier than it looks or something?

You know, somehow it feels like I’ve been here before….oh never mind, it must be my imagination. With all of the trolling that Kadokawa has foisted on us since they first made an announcement about Disappearance, I’m probably just worrying too much.

Yuki’s been looking a little weird lately. I mean, she’s a humanoid interface, so she’s supposed to be acting differently from normal humans, but still….there’s something different even from her usual self. I mean, look at her. When was the last time we ever saw her not reading a book? If she would read a book with one hand while water-skiing with the other, you’d think she’ll be reading again here.

Come to think of it, Haruhi is the type to drag lazy bums off their couches, out of their houses to really live life in the outside world; certainly a very different type of character from the kind that get love from today’s anime fans nowadays. Yet, she remains the most popular of them all even to this day despite that, and one must wonder why. Is it because it’s precisely because of her proactive attitude towards life? Are we all Kyons who secretly wish for a Haruhi to drag us out of our comfort zone to really live life?

Okay, seriously, something feels a little….off. There’s this inexplicable feeling that I just can’t put in words, but it’s there. I mean….how do I put it? It’s like, well, this is the second coming of Haruhi. On top of that, this episode covers the Endless Eight storyline, definitely one of the better short stories in the Haruhi canon. You’d think I’d be more excited about this, but for some reason I’m….not. Meh, I dunno. Maybe it’s just a succession of late nights recently. I should probably sleep early tonight for once.

Kyon always getting stuck with the tab is a running gag that never gets old, but sometimes I wonder why the rest of the SOS Brigade don’t pity him once in a while. I mean, Yuki can create money out of thin air if she wants, and certainly both Mikuru and Itsuki must have an "operational budget"; why is it always the poor "normal guy" with a student’s limited budget?

Next is an O-Bon festival, which means yukatas, of course! And they look mighty fine in yukata, all right.

You know, I keep getting this weird feeling all episode that I’ve seen this festival scene before. As if I’ve already blogged about it before; the last time I can clearly recall, it was one in Misae’s arc in CLANNAD ~AS~, but it feels as if it was more recent than that. Why is that….bah. Maybe it’s just that festival scenes are a dime a dozen in anime these days.

Is it just me, or is there something different about the way Yuki is looking at the masks? It’s a wonder as it is that she could be interested in such a thing in the first place; it must signify something to her, the question is what. A reminder of "home", perhaps?

I can sympathize with Kyon, and I’ll bet most others can too. There’s always this one guy or girl who’s so good with homework, they always manage to finish off the vacation assignments very early somehow, while the rest of us have to slog through it for the entire period, with probably quite a bit of procrastination to the last day thrown in for good measure. Vacation homework is the bane of student life alright; how do these people deal with it so easily?

Next on the itinenary, cicada catching. Haruhi sure is plowing through all the signature summer activities here.

Next is a one-day part-time job. Must be a bitch to be stuck inside these walking furnaces in the height of summer.

So….that’s the same frog costume that appeared in Someday In the Rain, right? At least now we know where it came from….

As if all the summer activities Haruhi keeps dragging them around to wasn’t enough, the SOS Brigade sans Haruhi herself suddenly decides to have meeting in the dead of night, just to have a meeting regarding…..wait, what? WUUUUUUUUUUUUT.

So….the deal here is, the SOS Brigade has become stuck in an endless recursion of time, starting from the 17th of August to the 31st. And when they reach the end of this timeframe, everything resets to the "save point" of the 17th, and all the activities they’ve done so far and will do until the 31st will be repeated once again. Which means….I’ve done all this before. Urgh, I’ll probably have to go back and change the episode count….including this time, that’s how many times have they repeated time now?

…..15,499 times. What. The. Fuck. That means I’ve been writing about Endless Eight for this many times? Over and over again? Rinse and repeat? Wow, I think my head is hurting like fuck just thinking about something like this. On the other hand….at least I know now why I wasn’t as enthused over this episode as I thought I would be; seeing the same thing over and over for 15,499 times will do that to anyone, even if all that comes of it is deja vu. You have to pity poor Yuki though, since she’s the only one who would remember anything….I probably said something like that as well, too. In any case, let’s see….screw this, I’ll call this Episode 13. Actually, just to be safe, make that Episode 14.

And it’s all because, despite all of the activities that Haruhi has been dragging the rest of the SOS Brigade around, there still ends up something which she always never got around to doing, despite only subconsciously having any clue as to what that could be. And if she herself doesn’t consciously know, what less the rest of the Brigade….you know, Kyon has always been pretty quick to get pissed at Haruhi, but I think that if there’s actually a good reason to be so, this would be it. Heck, I’ll bet even Yuki’s patience would be tested at something like this.

You know, I’d comment on how good the two looked sleeping together like that. I’d compare the two lookers, comment on which one I’ll choose if I had to pick between the both of them, and comment on how different people might have different tastes in girls. I’ll probably even mention that I’ll be cool just to see them bond with each other, if you know what I mean. But, I get the feeling I’ve already said all of that most out of 15,499 times before, so I’ll just leave it here.

And despite looping itself over and over at the behest of the God Empress’s will, time still flies all too fast, and already it’s near the end of the current loop. Alright, if there ever is a time to stop all this, it’s now, guys….

….no good, huh? Bah. Excuse me for a moment while I go make myself taller.

Well, I guess that’s how it is, then? We’re going to end up in the 15,500th loop at this rate, so…..oh, whatever. I don’t care anymore. If all this is going to happen again, there’s no meaning in finishing this article up properly. Whether a new episode ever comes or not, well, I guess I’ll leave it to the "me" then.

Lights out, later bitches.

I’ve been very intrigued by Hatsukoi Limited. I love this show. My female friend, who’s into pretty boy shows like Hanasekeru Seishounen, is also crazy about this show. Yet I absolutely hate chick lit, chick flicks and other romance movies/shows. So why do I like HL?

Wait, make that, why does almost every guy like Hatsukoi, to varying degrees, even if we all objectively know that it wasn’t a very mature or deep show?

I can think of a few reasons actually, and these are the main things something like Hatsukoi has over the vast majority of romance series that only girls would love.

1. There are only shitty guys who each are so weak, they are capable of starring in their own harem anime. Misao can fit just right into School Rumble (not exactly harem though), Mamoru behaves the same as 90 percent of harem leads, Kusuda is the typical lecher harem lead etc. As some blogger whose name I have forgotten mentioned, there are no standout guys in Hatsukoi, and I think this is the reason why it is beloved by us male viewers. We fucking hate pretty boys who steal our women. We can emphatise with these regular joes, who have issues that we have once faced or are facing. Stuff like short legs, ugly faces, inexperience, envy towards better males, siscon, unrequited crushes etc. There are absolutely no annoying bad boy pretty boys, the type that are permanant main characters of shoujo manga like F4. Everyone hates those bastards except fangirls and they easily ruin a show.

2. There are plenty of hot girls, each with their own harem-animesque personality traits. I’ll say that the characters aren’t particularly unique, deep or rounded and some don’t even get developed at all throughout the series. But like a good harem anime, us male viewers just pick a favourite girl and root for her. It helps that the artwork/character design is one of the best around and there’s also lots of fanservice of the really titillating kind. I love boobies and Kei/Misaki/Meguru have nice boobies. The key to drawing in a huge male following for a romance series is to have beautiful girls and not-so-beautiful guys, and HL really succeeds with this. It doesn’t alienate female viewers as females aren’t as averse to beautiful females as males are to beautiful males. Speaking of which, I’m having a hard time picking a favourite girl because so many are awesome. The only ones who I won’t instantly turn down if they ask me to date them are: the flat-chested swimming junior, the crazy drama club girl and weird incesty Koyoi. My favourite is probably Misaki in terms of appearance, but Chikura in terms of character.

3. There isn’t emo shit. The series doesn’t really have the sort of annoying whining, and it’s done very simply and to the point. The worst part about female-oriented romance shows is that some retarded emoshit will arise due to amazing coincidental tragedy, such as car crashes, diseases, affairs, or whatever natural disasters. Then the lovers will conquer the barriers and show their undying love. Hatsukoi is a mere gateway, and it doesn’t hide the fact that it shows the sweet, shallow and beautified version of first love that we all thought we had. It’s about nostalgia, rather than fantasy. Where everyone was shy, innocent and didn’t think about sex or money. Where people blushed just by talking to the opposite sex. Where everything done was a first. The whole show was saccharine-sweet and even the rejections weren’t outright, like Chikura and Ayumi’s. We guys don’t like heartbreaks in our romance shows. Also, the relationships aren’t overly grand and earth-shattering, like those you see in romance movies. I absolutely hate the sort like in Sex and the City (THE MOVIE) where the bride and groom finally get together intensely after 2 failed weddings etc etc and live happily ever after. HL has simple romances that you can easily relate to, instead of cursing that these wretched movies are tricking the foolish real girls into having unreal expectations of relationships.

4. There’s also the element of growing up in HL, which is sort of the same rush you get when viewing Honey and Clover, which was also equally popular between guys and girls.

5. Each arc was quickly settled and wasn’t wishy washy. I think this is pretty important, but not as important as the first 2 reasons. Come to think of it, Suzuka and its sequel, Kimo no iru Machi, were long, emo, and extremely wishy washy and convoluted but they were huge successes cos they had loser guys and lots of hot girls. But regardless, Hatsukoi’s quick and concise conclusions of each of the relationships prevented boredom from settling in, but at the expense of depth, which most guys don’t care about anyway. To us, romance is people getting together, and not the freakin process.

Hatsukoi Limited will probably be my recommendation to anyone who’s interested in a boyish group romance anime, which is surprisingly quite rare. I can only think of Boys Be for this genre.

The Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody of three weeks ago was but a teaser to whet appetites, but this week the God Empress Herself makes an emphatic return. And how!

It’s always the small things with Haruhi. From all appearances, she might not seem to know the meaning of the word "subtle", but sometimes some of the small things she does are just that.

As if all the summer activities Haruhi keeps dragging them around to wasn’t enough, the SOS Brigade sans Haruhi herself suddenly decides to have meeting in the dead of night, just to have a meeting regarding…..wait, what? WUUUUUUUUUUUUT.

So….the deal here is, the SOS Brigade has become stuck in an endless recursion of time, starting from the 17th of August to the 31st. And when they reach the end of this timeframe, everything reset to the "save point" of the 17th, and all the activities they’ve done so far and will do until the 31st will be repeated once again. Which means….I’ve written about all this before. Urgh, I’ll probably have to go back and change the episode count….including this time, that’s how many times have they repeated time now?

…..15,498 times. So, adding on to those episodes which I do recall in my memory, this would make it the 15,511th episode? Whoa, KyoAni sure weren’t joking when they said they’ll make good on a future season of SHnY eventually….wait. Does Episode 12 count as an iteration? Because if it does, then that means this is the 15,510th episode instead…..fuck, my head hurts already. I’m just going to re-mark this Episode 13 and be done with it.

But, I get the feeling I’ve already said all of that plenty of times before, so I’ll just leave it here.

Erm, yeah. I probably made plenty of gay, FABULOUS, and bromance comments here, too. Let’s just leave it at that.

But really, if anyone has the right to complain, it would have to be Yuki. Because she, unlike everyone else around her, actually has to live through AND remember the same two weeks over, and over, and over again. When we were young, there’s probably quite a few of us who wished that summer would never end; all I can say now here is, be careful what you wish for.

And at the end of this time loop, just as had happened in the previous time loops before this one, the Brigade is beset with a sense of failure as their Chief walks out the restaurant, vaguely unsatisfied, and poised to plunge the whole world back another two weeks once again. And yet there’s only really one person in the whole world who would really feel it….talk about the dire half-dragon version of ‘life sure sucks, doesn’t it?’

So….this is usually where I’ll end the article on a proper note, like I’ve been doing all this time. Except, if we’re going to plunge back into another iteration of this Endless Eight once again, really, what’s the point? Well, i suppose I do owe it to myself and to everyone else to finish things off properly….on the other hand, if no one is going to remember any effort I put into a proper ending anyway….

….oh well, fuck this. See you for the next loop, bitches.

As winter sets in upon the year once again, marking the impending end of another cycle of seasons, the cold chill of the air settles upon the everyday happenings of the girls of After School Teatime. As the low temperatures slows the pace of life to a glacial rate, it is a time to sit back and relax, disengage from life’s usual activities, and contemplate the year that has gone by. To catch a breath from the events of the past, such that one can psych up for what’s to come next. And, it is a time to bid goodbye, along with a wish of ’see you again soon’.

K-ON!, Extra Episode.

It’s interesting to note that, for all we’ve known, this is the first time we’ve seen the girls just sit together and daydream like that; is this an effect common with cold weather, or is this just a particularly unusual day for the normally boisterous Light Music Club? Only Yui seems immune to the daydreaming syndrome, and true to form she almost brings the mood back to normal singlehandedly; but then again, she practically sleepwalks through life, so perhaps she doesn’t really count.

Eh? This is the first time I’ve heard that Ritsu is an oneechan. She hardly seems the type.

On first glance, Ritsu with her hair down can be VERY easily mistaken for Yui. My reaction when I first saw her thus could be summarized as "Ah that’s Yui….wait, it’s not, something’s not right here……Ritsu?!"

And, with no school and no club activities on this particular lethargic winter day, the girls proceed with their separate plans for the day. Firstly, Azusa starts off on a panicky note with her namesake.

While Mugi, being the rich little oujo-sama that she is, decides it would be cool to give another go at a part-time job, this time going ahead with the fast-food gig that was vetoed by the club way back then.

And Mio goes on a road trip in search of inspiration, indulging in the ‘cool, mature aura’ she has not had much of a chance to express ever since being inducted into the Club. For some reason, I wonder what she would manifest should a certain Lieutenant Gunther give her an ‘Awaken Potential’ Order. I’ll guess that there would be ‘Moe Moe Kyun’, ‘Afraid of Barnacles’, and ‘Rice Bowl’ amongst the possibilities.

As for Yui….I really don’t have to describe this, do I?

And in a twist, Ritsu starts moping over what apparently is a love letter to her. I can’t quite decide if any guy who would fall for her type is crazy, or actually quite normal. I mean, it’s not like the girl has the ability to end the world if she gets bored or anything.

As the day wears on, the girls gradually settle down into their day’s routine. Contrary to her worries, Azusa bonds pretty quickly with her new feline companion, in the meantime dropping a sign that she’s gotten used to her new feline identity.

"Would you like a coke and fries to go with me, sir?"

Now, I’m all for Mio’s moe antics and all, but there are times when even I wonder whether she could be put to even better use in a storyline of some other genre. For one, a girl of her archetype could certainly have quite a bit of potential in a romance drama, yuri or otherwise. Something tells me that if we focus on her life outside of the Club with an ARIA-esque bent, it could work too. And if neither of these are your bent, well…..we can always hand the girl a katana along with a black seifuku, and sit back to see what she does with it.

And last but not least, it’s family time for the Hirasawa sisters as they go grocery shopping for their annual winter oden. Somehow, though Mugi-chan might be the undisputed oujo-sama of the quintet, I get the feeling that the rest of the girls aren’t all that badly off either. For one, the financial situation of the Hirasawas are obviously good enough that the parents can go on honeymoons all the freakin’ time, and Mio’s penchance for last-generation cameras is clearly not due to lack of funds, if her brand-name headphones and MacBook are any indication. On the other hand, we don’t have many clues in regards to Ritsu and Azusa, though maybe I’m just missing something. How much do jazz musicians in Japan make anyway?

You know, I never could have imagined that Ritsu could actually look respectable. I guess it’s all a matter of relative perspective; it’s probably not that hard if you compared oneself to a young teenage boy.

But life doesn’t always go that smoothly all the time, as they would soon realise. Inspiration doesn’t come readily, slip-ups are inevitable in a job, a crisis with no solution in sight can strike at any time, and emotions can creep up slowly but steadily on one’s thoughts. These are the kind of things that can happen when one is not in the company of anyone familiar.

And herein lies Yui’s greatest contribution to the club; the timely reminder that life need not always be SRSBSNS all the time. Though the burdens of life can weigh heavily on one, it is the lightest moments which is all is needed to brighten the day all over again. It is also these moments which put the SRSBSNS aspects of life in perspective, reminding one that everything may not always be as SRS as it may seem as the time. Don’t worry, be happy.

It may be a misunderstanding, but seriously, Mio. Those lyrics are just a little too coincidental to believe that there wasn’t any hidden meaning behind them. Fufufu.

And whatever happens, there’s always the same group of friends to fall back on, the usual gang to meet up with, at the end of the day. To gossip, snack, make music, and above all, have the time of one’s life with. For there is only one point in life when one can enjoy such a Fuwa Fuwa Time, and though there would be new experiences in the future long after this has passed, there will never be anything else quite like it. Even if it’s not special. Even if it’s ordinary in every way.

And at the end of all things, at the end of the road, it’s finally time to say goodbye to these girls, once and for all. It has been a fun journey, and while this is the last we’ll see of them for a long time to come, the last time that they’ll sing for us After School, we can always take away from this journey the memory of how to enjoy the Light and Fluffy Time of life to its fullest, shedding what worries we may have at the end of the day. And someday, we’ll meet these girls we loved once again.

Ascaloth of RIUVA, signing out of the coverage for K-ON!

You read that right. In other words, too much of a good thing makes you sick, especially if it makes you dizzy at the same time. Transformers 2 is probably the most disappointing movie I’ve ever seen. I went into the cinema with high expectations, ignoring the warnings of movie critics who rated it half a star out of five stars, as you know, they are snobby stuck ups who can’t see the magic in our youthful movies like Speed Racer. I left the cinema with egg on my face, as the critics were totally right.

This movie sucks, and it was so long that it ended after the last bus had left and I was forced to take a cab home, costing me a further 17 dollars. Fuck you Michael Bay!

To make things simple, I’ll list down in point form why this movie is shit.

1. Megan Fox is ugly. There, I’ve said it. I don’t understand why people think this manufactured, heavily plasticised, fake-boobed, weird-faced creature is hot. Look at her closely, she looks so fake and slutty that it’s a turn-off! There are too many shots of her in slo-mo with digital boobie bouncing. There are far better actresses (she’s not an actress anyway) and her role was a walking set of fake boobs.

2. Saturation. The same things happen over and over again that it numbs our senses. Robots punching, spinning shots, military hardware flyby shots and fucking explosions. Too many. This is the first time I’ve ever felt that there were too many special effects. Previously, I was of the opinion that CGI was like money, you can’t have too many.

3. The story is nonsensical. Note I don’t use the word plot here. Too many idiots don’t know the difference between story and plot. But Michael Bay knows neither. Transformers 1 was way better in that while it had a simple story, it was direct and was a vehicle to show off the action. It made sense. Transformers 2 is just rubbish.

4. The battles are poorly choreographed and nobody cares who gets killed because we can’t recognise who’s who! It doesn’t make sense when Prime had double headblades and only uses them when he’s dying. Is it some sort of limit break??? He wins easily with his double heat blades but prior to that, was getting pummeled when he fought 2-3 enemies with just his bare fists. Why?? Also, what’s with the rail gun? It’s stupid deus ex machina to get rid of the over-powered Devastator. Speaking of which, the annoying autobot twins should’ve been eaten up by Devastator, but instead can burrow in his face upon being ingested.

5. The whole movie is a retarded commercial for so many products, not just the cars, but worst of all, the US military. It is no secret that Bay is on very good terms with the US military, since his movies tend to portray them well and as such, is allowed very good access to the toys of the military. In return, he has to suck their cocks and give lots of airtime to the hardware. The movie was chock full of stock footage-like scenes of aircraft taking off, tanks rolling out and other shots that would be more fitting in an army recruitment video! It’s ridiculous and tiresome. You didn’t actually need the autobots as the military were owning the Decepticons easily. They really got pummeled hard, unlike in the first movie where they were invincible. I guess the military bosses didn’t like their equipment being shown to be so inept.

6. The camerawork is horrible of course. The love scenes were cheesy and to distract from this, they had the camera spin around 360 degrees so rapidly that the audience threw up their popcorn (half-digested). The mecha battle scenes were unexciting and really quite dull compared to the first movie. The problem was that they set it in a sandy, open, brightly lit environment, which means that the combat is quite slow paced.

7. The college scenes were extremely retarded. All the girls in those scenes were long-legged, boobie-showing, long-haired, slutty beauties. It’s like the Fast and the Furious movies.

8. Too many unnecessary characters. The autobot twins, the Leo guy, and even the evil Prime were completely worthless. The parents of Sam were useless too. In fact, Megan Fox herself could’ve been cut out of the movie and it would’ve been the same show.

9. The humour was just bad and totally unfunny. For some reason, the otakus I watched it with laughed at every single thing, while DM and I sat in stony silence.

10. It could’ve been Decepticons 2: Rise of the Fallen, a blockbuster horror-action flick. Because really, the Autobots barely featured and had little to no personality. Not that the Decepticons had any, but at least they had the role of scaring the humans and cutting them up.

Overall, a bloody disappointing show. I never thought I would dislike an effects-laden sci-fi action movie adapted from my childhood toys, but yeah I hate it. Fuck you Michael Bay, you suck!

We all know humans are sheep and sheep are cool, so to be human you must be cool, and as a special breed of human known as the Anime blogger, your coolness needs to be upped to the maximum, to facilitate the electronic penis growth. But how? Fret not, in just a short 15 minute post written at 4.49 am, I shall teach you how!

1. Always flame the most popular thing on the market at the moment, and then you will be cool.

Although we are sheep, we don’t like to be just any old sheep that blends into the flock. Hence we must be counter-sheep, and we start our own flocks. How best to do this than to utilise Newton’s law and harness the opposite forces? In other words, hate on K-On really badly! Flame Naruto! Speak ill of all the shows you loved before they got too popular to like! A quick search online, however, shows that almost every anime blogger now hates K-On, OMG! How now? The trick is to go even further, and counter those counter-culture sheep by being a counter-counter-culture sheep, in other words, praise K-On! And repeat if you garner enough support.

2. Always watch the shows that nobody watches, and praise them, in order to praise yourself.

This is a tactic popularised by Baka-raptor and some of the other episodic bloggers. To be a special blogger, you need to watch shows that nobody watches, to show that you have unique perspectives. Even if the show utterly sucks, like Akikan. Mind you, nobody watches more than me because I watch everything except shoujo and yaoi, even the English unsubbed series that most people have yet to hear of. So I am best blogger. Anyway, most people should just pick a few shows they don’t like and are not popular, and then start watching them, through gritted teeth, and make obscure jokes relating to these shows. This will get the crowd in awe of your l33t anime hunting skills, which will be seen as cool.

3. Always talk about deleting people from your blogroll as you have outgrown their importance.

Yes, nothing stirs up your fanbase more than threatening to cut off their precious traffic. Even if you aren’t actually generating any traffic. Once again, Bakaraptor is the one who has put this action in the spotlight, by hinting that he will be beating out anyway who does not suck him and worship him. This promptly causes a tsunami of bootlicking from his loyal fans, which will now show the other viewers how important he is.

4. Do not allow comments on your blog but make sure to leave hints that you are extremely well-educated and successful in life and do not need to listen to the shit spewed by 12 year olds online.

One might think Aninouto is most guilty of this, and it is true, but there are plenty of other blogs who do it. And it bloody works, cos they are cool. Everyone visits Aninouto and secretly hopes they get on the site somehow. Other bloggers also live in fear of being impaled by the sharp sniper swordpen of Aninouto, and thus will keep themselves in line. Snipers are cool, everyone uses them in every game. So online word snipers are cool too.

5. Name drop. You ought to mention which great VIP you’ve met in real life or online, and who knows your awesomeness, such that people identify you as one of the upper crust bloggers.

I’ll give you an example, since this might be a difficult tip to follow. Here goes, "I went to kino and met up with Uematsu, my good friend from college, who introduced me to Danny Choo, the so-called king of Otaku bloggers. He and I had a beer and went to watch some baseball in Tokyo." The best part is, it works even with middle-class bloggers, sort of like "Well, Jpmeyer and Hinano urged me to battle Scott with them together, but I had to decline as Impz was having a tennis match with me." It’s all just to show that in your active social life, you get to mix with hip people. You might wonder why anime otaku are hip, but trust me, everyone thinks writing on the internet about anime on forums are gay, but if you do so on your own blog, you’re cool.

Yeah so if you do the above 5 things, you’ll be real cool and unique.

Amazingly, I did a quick search on the various anime blogs out there and found that absolutely nobody has blogged on the new manga series, Beelzebub, yet. It’s probably one of the best, if not the best, comedy battle manga I’ve read in years and yes, it’s far better than even M x 0, which for me, was the best comedy battle manga I’ve read in years.

With 17 chapters out so far in Shounen Jump, Beelzebub, by rookie mangaka Tamura Ryuhei, is about a super-strong, super evil and utterly hilarious high school kid named Oga, who chances upon a baby who pops out of a old man who splits into half. Apparently, the baby turns out to be the future demon king who’ll destroy the world and he was sent to the human plane to get attached to a human parent, who’ll be the catalyst for the channeling of his evil powers. A gothloli demon girl follows him and acts as his babysitter. Like Persona 4, there is a social link between the Oga and the baby Beelzebub, and this link is increased by an upping in mutual trust, which is in turn increased by Oga’s doing of evil acts. The catch is that the baby cannot be further than 15 metres away from Oga or he’ll die instantly. Of course, this sucks, so Oga tries to get rid of the baby by being good but obviously since he is pure evil he can’t do it. He’s also in a super delinquent high school where everyone fights to the death more often than not. Along the way, high school delinquent bosses fight him, sort of similar to how Onizuka is challenged in Shounan Junaigumi, the prequel to GTO.

Think of it as a variation of the M x 0 style of gag battle manga, with less ecchi but more side-splitting humour. The writing is really witty and I laughed more in the first few chapters than I ever did for any manga, I suspect. If you ever feel like picking up a brand new shounen series, make this your first pick! As is evident from the Jump questionaires, which have Beelzebub in the top 5, beating the likes of Bleach! Art-wise it’s a bit similar to Bleach, but more rough about the edges, with fewer pretty boys, and the faces aren’t that consistently drawn, which is as expected of a newbie mangaka.

Ever since I read Bakuman which actually mentioned Beelzebub as one of the Gold Future Cup winners (true in real life), I’ve sort of leveled up my manga reading stats and I predict this manga will go places. So, mark my words, this manga, if it is sustained, will probably become one of the new Jump top series, replacing the likes of Bleach and Naruto, the latter ending pretty soon. In conclusion, if you like shounen, or just like comedy in general, READ THIS AT ALL COSTS, even if you have to pirate it on onemanga.com like I did, though I do intend to buy the series when they are released.

People constantly and right talk about the likes of Genshiken as an otaku bible, but the relatively new (started in 2008) manga Bakuman offers an even better perspective. See, Genshiken is from the viewpoint of the consumers, that is, otaku. Bakuman stars two wannabe-mangaka who single-mindedly want to be successful Shounen Jump serialised pros, and get their own anime. The view point is completely different and it is very educational, to say the least.

Bakuman is written by Ouba Tsugumi and Obata Takeshi, which are the people who brought you the somewhat epic Death Note. Obata is already quite the legend in Jump, and so has tonnes of experience in the manga industry, which he sets out to share with Bakuman. The manga is chock full of insider information, which even the average Japanese might not be aware of, much less the typical weeaboo, whose interest is spread out among manga, anime and games.

Saiko is a 14 year old artistically-talented kid whose uncle was a somewhat famous one-hit wonder gag mangaka, who died tragically due to "overwork" after his manga series got cut by the infamous Jump chopper. He believes the true reason is suicide and thus discontinued his childhood dream of being a mangaka. Takagi, on the other hand, is a brilliant classmate who aspires to be a mangaka but knows he does not have the artistry to handle the drawings. He desperately recruits Saiko who turns him down at first, but later accepts when Takagi sort of matchmakes him and his crush, who turns out to be a seiyuu-wannabe. So the crush, a pretty ojou-sama character named Azuki, makes a promise to marry Saiko when she gets to play the heroine of his Jump-manga anime adaptation. The catch is, they now have to follow their dreams and cannot talk to each other or date at all until then. By a quirk of fate, Azuki’s mom and Saiko’s uncle, the dead mangaka, shared a similar relationship, but after 10 years, Azuki’s mom couldn’t wait and married a rich man instead. Saiko and Takagi are determined to succeed and the manga charts their journey from n00bs all the way to the pro-level. Bakuman also features plenty of Jump staff and mangaka, some of which are disguised as other characters.

In a sense, Bakuman is quite similar to another one of Obata’s manga, Hikaru no Go, in that there’s a lot of wowing and "you’re so talented and awesome" lines without ever showing us how so talented they are. There’s a huge amount of social commentary on the manga scene, and criticisms of Jump, which is quite generous of the magazine, since Bakuman itself is serialised in Jump. It also shows off the inner mechanics of the company, which is actually the best part of the manga. It has completely changed the way I look at all manga, not just shounen. We always laugh at the likes of Bleach and Naruto, but I’m sure once you read Bakuman, you’ll be able to appreciate why the mainstream shounen titles are made that way. You’ll also learn to appreciate the huge amount of work that goes into the creation of a manga, even a 19 chapter weekly featuring nothing but fighting scenes and "I’ll show you my true power!!!".

The interesting feature of Bakuman is how despite it not appearing to follow the typical Jump formula, which they themselves describe, if you look deeper, it totally does follow it. You have talented main characters who have a simple to understand fighting reason, attractive love interests, stronger enemies who will join them soon and manga battles in the form of the dreaded Jump questionaires.

Please read Bakuman, it’s worth it. With only 42 chapters out, it’s possible to read it all in half a day, which I did. It’s bumped off one of my favourite manga to become top 5 material for me.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu (2009), Episode 12: Endless Eight.

But eh, either beach or swimming pool, it’s still an amazing sight either way. Though I’m wondering how Haruhi can keep her ribbon intact in the water; is it easier than it looks or something?

FAIL

Oh, and I think I see the star-shaped mole you-know-where.

Kyon always getting stuck with the tab is a running gag that never gets old, but sometimes I wonder why the rest of the SOS Brigade don’t pity him once in a while. I mean, Yuki can create money out of thin air if she wants, and certainly both Mikuru and Itsuki must have an "operational budget"; why is it always the poor "normal guy" with a student’s limited budget?

Next is an O-Bon festival, which means yukatas, of course! And they look mighty fine in yukata, all right.

YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG

Is it just me, or is there something different about the way Yuki is looking at the Ultraman mask? It’s a wonder as it is that she could be interested in such a thing in the first place; it must signify something to her, the question is what. A reminder of "home"?

"Die, damned bugs!"

Actually, is this even possible in real life? If so, I wanna see the Youtube video of it.

Yuki has been looking a little weird all episode. Putting that aside, what in the world is that kind of firework that she’s looking at? I’ve never seen the likes of it before.

Next on the itinenary, cicada catching. Haruhi sure is plowing through all the signature summer activities here.

And of course, Yuki being h4x and all, misses the point but scores a Hercules beetle instead.

FAIL

Next is a one-day part-time job. So….that’s the same frog costume that appeared in Someday In the Rain, right?

Yo Kyon, it’s a hint, you know what that means?! HIIIIIN-TO!!!!

FAIL

You FAIL too!

Was it already revealed which real-life town the setting of SHnY was based on? If not, how long more before an intrepid cameraman recognizes the skyline here and compares it with a photograph of a real-life skyline?

Redefining the phrase "stars in her eyes".

One two three four five four three two one two three four five four three two one two three four….

So just what exactly is she singing here? Motteke Sailor-fuku? What ‘Bout My Star? Don’t Say "Lazy"?

On another note, gotta love what Yuki is doing to the karaoke remote there. Perhaps she’s thinking about how to h4x the karaoke machine? I don’t know if I want to see the results of that or not.

And that is the way summer vacation should be spent; worn out from a full day’s worth of activities, with the people one treasures most as friends, on the train ride home.

With summer vacation about to come to an end, it is time to call it a day, and head home to get ready for the new school term.

And if you’ve neglected all the schoolwork you were supposed to be doing, then the last day is the day when you rush to get through all of it as much as you can. Come to think of it, that sounds like a very familiar experience to me back then….heh. Procrastinators, unite!

And…..that is it. That’s all there is to this episode. Cue the cries of "what, that’s it?", and really, they could not be blamed if this was the first time they’re seeing this part of the story. Which brings up a very pertinent question which will affect how I blog about SHnY09 from here onwards….how many people don’t actually already know how the story is going to go from reading the novels? I usually try to avoid spoilers even if I know what’s going to happen next whenever I blog, but somehow I’m wondering whether I should just forget about that and go with the flow for this series. ^_^"

So, I would like to hear from you guys what kind of readership I should be writing for from this point onwards. In any case, once again we’re back with the phenomenon of 2006, three years onwards. I will be with you for the next new episodes of the continuing story, of The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi.

Ascaloth, out.

Somehow, I feel like Sawachan-sensei missed her calling in life. Putting her ‘perverted ojisan’ tastes aside, she certainly has good sense when it comes to matters of fashion, and I’d bet being able to tell another female’s three sizes just by looking is definitely a gift which could certainly be useful in that field. I mean, if we guys had half her ability to tell another girl’s cup size on sight, we would certainly be saved a lot of trouble, if you know what I mean.

I wonder if perfect pitch is something that runs in the family; Ui certainly didn’t have to give up reliability of character in exchange for the same gift that her sister does. Apparently Ritsu had the right idea all along when she first suggested reeling Ui in to the club.

Unfortunately, getting over a cold isn’t as easy as it sounds, and for the first time, they had to seriously consider having Yui sit out the concert, now that with Azusa in the team, they do have that option. It would have been a pity, but as ENOZ might testify, better half the band than nothing at all.

Yet it’s not so easy to shake the feeling that there’s something missing, isn’t it?

Fortunately, Yui does manage to make her return in the nick of time, and for real this time. And so, with oh so little time left in both sense of the word, it is time for them to head into the last performance we’ll ever see from these girls for a while.

Yes, the MugiVision virus certainly is a success in more ways than one.

Of course, Yui wouldn’t be Yui if she didn’t come with a mishap as part of the package. Oh, it probably doesn’t hurt to mention that Ui in particular also proved that an inability to keep the beat, cute nicknames, and DFC also comes as part of Yui’s package.

Which means that, as she rushes back home to get the only guitar she can possibly play with, it’s time for Sawako-sensei to show her reliability in the conventional way for once, and stand in for her at the last minute. And while she is doing so…..

….Yui, as well as all of us, walk once again down memory lane, down the path which led her to this place at this point in time. How she had started at the exact same point on her orientation day one and a half years ago, rushing to school by the exact same path, and how she had met a motley band of girls with whom she would make memories precious like no other, whether she knew it then or not. And this day, she retraces her steps all the way back to the people, the friends, who brightened up her life like nothing else would ever quite do in the same way.

For it is with these friends, old and new, that she has created her Fuwa Fuwa Time, her Light and Fluffy Time, together with, and though they may not be anything special, they are certainly irreplacable memories. Playing around, making music, such things would not have been without these important people, and life would have been all the poorer for it.

So therefore, while all things must come to an end sooner or later, and it is the time for this little tale about 5 girls with a dream of music to come to its conclusion, still….just for a while more. A little more. Mou ikkai! Dear God, please give us the dream time that belongs only to us, just for a while more!

And with it, this is it, it’s time to wrap up the show! We’ve loved these girls once; never forget that love! May they always make the music of their lives together forever! Ascaloth of RIUVA, signing out!
