<p id="p47002001.01-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v47002001-1">2:1&nbsp;</span>For I made up my mind not to make another painful visit to you. <span class="verse-num" id="v47002002-1">2&nbsp;</span>For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? <span class="verse-num" id="v47002003-1">3&nbsp;</span>And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. <span class="verse-num" id="v47002004-1">4&nbsp;</span>For I wrote to you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.</p>
<h3 id="p47002005.01-1">Forgive the Sinner</h3>
<p id="p47002005.04-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v47002005-1">5&nbsp;</span>Now if anyone has caused pain, he has caused it not to me, but in some measure&#8212;not to put it too severely&#8212;to all of you. <span class="verse-num" id="v47002006-1">6&nbsp;</span>For such a one, this punishment by the majority is enough, <span class="verse-num" id="v47002007-1">7&nbsp;</span>so you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. <span class="verse-num" id="v47002008-1">8&nbsp;</span>So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him. <span class="verse-num" id="v47002009-1">9&nbsp;</span>For this is why I wrote, that I might test you and know whether you are obedient in everything. <span class="verse-num" id="v47002010-1">10&nbsp;</span>Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive. Indeed, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ, <span class="verse-num" id="v47002011-1">11&nbsp;</span>so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.</p>
<h3 id="p47002012.01-1">Triumph in Christ</h3>
<p id="p47002012.04-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v47002012-1">12&nbsp;</span>When I came to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ, even though a door was opened for me in the Lord, <span class="verse-num" id="v47002013-1">13&nbsp;</span>my spirit was not at rest because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I took leave of them and went on to Macedonia.</p>
<p id="p47002014.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v47002014-1">14&nbsp;</span>But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. <span class="verse-num" id="v47002015-1">15&nbsp;</span>For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, <span class="verse-num" id="v47002016-1">16&nbsp;</span>to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things? <span class="verse-num" id="v47002017-1">17&nbsp;</span>For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God&#8217;s word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.</p>

<h3 id="p14019001.01-1">Jehoshaphat&#8217;s Reforms</h3>
<p id="p14019001.03-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v14019001-1">19:1&nbsp;</span>Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned in safety to his house in Jerusalem. <span class="verse-num" id="v14019002-1">2&nbsp;</span>But Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him and said to King Jehoshaphat, &#8220;Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>? Because of this, wrath has gone out against you from the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>. <span class="verse-num" id="v14019003-1">3&nbsp;</span>Nevertheless, some good is found in you, for you destroyed the Asherahs out of the land, and have set your heart to seek God.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p14019004.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14019004-1">4&nbsp;</span>Jehoshaphat lived at Jerusalem. And he went out again among the people, from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim, and brought them back to the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, the God of their fathers. <span class="verse-num" id="v14019005-1">5&nbsp;</span>He appointed judges in the land in all the fortified cities of Judah, city by city, <span class="verse-num" id="v14019006-1">6&nbsp;</span>and said to the judges, &#8220;Consider what you do, for you judge not for man but for the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>. He is with you in giving judgment. <span class="verse-num" id="v14019007-1">7&nbsp;</span>Now then, let the fear of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> be upon you. Be careful what you do, for there is no injustice with the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> our God, or partiality or taking bribes.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p14019008.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14019008-1">8&nbsp;</span>Moreover, in Jerusalem Jehoshaphat appointed certain Levites and priests and heads of families of Israel, to give judgment for the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> and to decide disputed cases. They had their seat at Jerusalem. <span class="verse-num" id="v14019009-1">9&nbsp;</span>And he charged them: &#8220;Thus you shall do in the fear of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, in faithfulness, and with your whole heart: <span class="verse-num" id="v14019010-1">10&nbsp;</span>whenever a case comes to you from your brothers who live in their cities, concerning bloodshed, law or commandment, statutes or rules, then you shall warn them, that they may not incur guilt before the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> and wrath may not come upon you and your brothers. Thus you shall do, and you will not incur guilt. <span class="verse-num" id="v14019011-1">11&nbsp;</span>And behold, Amariah the chief priest is over you in all matters of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>; and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael, the governor of the house of Judah, in all the king&#8217;s matters, and the Levites will serve you as officers. Deal courageously, and may the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> be with the upright!&#8221;</p>

<p class="chapter-first" id="p47001002.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v47001002-1">2&nbsp;</span>Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.</p>
<h3 id="p47001003.01-1">God of All Comfort</h3>
<p id="p47001003.05-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v47001003-1">3&nbsp;</span>Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, <span class="verse-num" id="v47001004-1">4&nbsp;</span>who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. <span class="verse-num" id="v47001005-1">5&nbsp;</span>For as we share abundantly in Christ&#8217;s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. <span class="verse-num" id="v47001006-1">6&nbsp;</span>If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. <span class="verse-num" id="v47001007-1">7&nbsp;</span>Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.</p>
<p id="p47001008.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v47001008-1">8&nbsp;</span>For we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. <span class="verse-num" id="v47001009-1">9&nbsp;</span>Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. <span class="verse-num" id="v47001010-1">10&nbsp;</span>He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again. <span class="verse-num" id="v47001011-1">11&nbsp;</span>You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many.</p>
<h3 id="p47001012.01-1">Paul&#8217;s Change of Plans</h3>
<p id="p47001012.05-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v47001012-1">12&nbsp;</span>For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you. <span class="verse-num" id="v47001013-1">13&nbsp;</span>For we are not writing to you anything other than what you read and acknowledge and I hope you will fully acknowledge&#8212; <span class="verse-num" id="v47001014-1">14&nbsp;</span>just as you did partially acknowledge us&#8212;that on the day of our Lord Jesus you will boast of us as we will boast of you.</p>
<p id="p47001015.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v47001015-1">15&nbsp;</span>Because I was sure of this, I wanted to come to you first, so that you might have a second experience of grace. <span class="verse-num" id="v47001016-1">16&nbsp;</span>I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia, and to come back to you from Macedonia and have you send me on my way to Judea. <span class="verse-num" id="v47001017-1">17&nbsp;</span>Was I vacillating when I wanted to do this? Do I make my plans according to the flesh, ready to say &#8220;Yes, yes&#8221; and &#8220;No, no&#8221; at the same time? <span class="verse-num" id="v47001018-1">18&nbsp;</span>As surely as God is faithful, our word to you has not been Yes and No. <span class="verse-num" id="v47001019-1">19&nbsp;</span>For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but in him it is always Yes. <span class="verse-num" id="v47001020-1">20&nbsp;</span>For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. <span class="verse-num" id="v47001021-1">21&nbsp;</span>And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, <span class="verse-num" id="v47001022-1">22&nbsp;</span>and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.</p>
<p id="p47001023.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v47001023-1">23&nbsp;</span>But I call God to witness against me&#8212;it was to spare you that I refrained from coming again to Corinth. <span class="verse-num" id="v47001024-1">24&nbsp;</span>Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith.</p>

<h3 id="p14018001.01-1">Jehoshaphat Allies with Ahab</h3>
<p id="p14018001.05-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v14018001-1">18:1&nbsp;</span>Now Jehoshaphat had great riches and honor, and he made a marriage alliance with Ahab. <span class="verse-num" id="v14018002-1">2&nbsp;</span>After some years he went down to Ahab in Samaria. And Ahab killed an abundance of sheep and oxen for him and for the people who were with him, and induced him to go up against Ramoth-gilead. <span class="verse-num" id="v14018003-1">3&nbsp;</span>Ahab king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, &#8220;Will you go with me to Ramoth-gilead?&#8221; He answered him, &#8220;I am as you are, my people as your people. We will be with you in the war.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p14018004.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14018004-1">4&nbsp;</span>And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, &#8220;Inquire first for the word of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018005-1">5&nbsp;</span>Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, four hundred men, and said to them, &#8220;Shall we go to battle against Ramoth-gilead, or shall I refrain?&#8221; And they said, &#8220;Go up, for God will give it into the hand of the king.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018006-1">6&nbsp;</span>But Jehoshaphat said, &#8220;Is there not here another prophet of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> of whom we may inquire?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018007-1">7&nbsp;</span>And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, &#8220;There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, Micaiah the son of Imlah; but I hate him, for he never prophesies good concerning me, but always evil.&#8221; And Jehoshaphat said, &#8220;Let not the king say so.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018008-1">8&nbsp;</span>Then the king of Israel summoned an officer and said, &#8220;Bring quickly Micaiah the son of Imlah.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018009-1">9&nbsp;</span>Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah were sitting on their thrones, arrayed in their robes. And they were sitting at the threshing floor at the entrance of the gate of Samaria, and all the prophets were prophesying before them. <span class="verse-num" id="v14018010-1">10&nbsp;</span>And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made for himself horns of iron and said, &#8220;Thus says the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, &#8216;With these you shall push the Syrians until they are destroyed.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018011-1">11&nbsp;</span>And all the prophets prophesied so and said, &#8220;Go up to Ramoth-gilead and triumph. <p id="p14018012.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14018012-1">12&nbsp;</span>And the messenger who went to summon Micaiah said to him, &#8220;Behold, the words of the prophets with one accord are favorable to the king. Let your word be like the word of one of them, and speak favorably.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018013-1">13&nbsp;</span>But Micaiah said, &#8220;As the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> lives, what my God says, that I will speak.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018014-1">14&nbsp;</span>And when he had come to the king, the king said to him, &#8220;Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall I refrain?&#8221; And he answered, &#8220;Go up and triumph; they will be given into your hand.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018015-1">15&nbsp;</span>But the king said to him, &#8220;How many times shall I make you swear that you speak to me nothing but the truth in the name of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018016-1">16&nbsp;</span>And he said, &#8220;I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd. And the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> said, &#8216;These have no master; let each return to his home in peace.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018017-1">17&nbsp;</span>And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, &#8220;Did I not tell you that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018018-1">18&nbsp;</span>And Micaiah said, &#8220;Therefore hear the word of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>: I saw the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left. <span class="verse-num" id="v14018019-1">19&nbsp;</span>And the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> said, &#8216;Who will entice Ahab the king of Israel, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?&#8217; And one said one thing, and another said another. <span class="verse-num" id="v14018020-1">20&nbsp;</span>Then a spirit came forward and stood before the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, saying, &#8216;I will entice him.&#8217; And the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> said to him, &#8216;By what means?&#8217; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018021-1">21&nbsp;</span>And he said, &#8216;I will go out, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.&#8217; And he said, &#8216;You are to entice him, and you shall succeed; go out and do so.&#8217; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018022-1">22&nbsp;</span>Now therefore behold, the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> has put a lying spirit in the mouth of these your prophets. The <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> has declared disaster concerning you.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p14018023.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14018023-1">23&nbsp;</span>Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near and struck Micaiah on the cheek and said, &#8220;Which way did the Spirit of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> go from me to speak to you?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018024-1">24&nbsp;</span>And Micaiah said, &#8220;Behold, you shall see on that day when you go into an inner chamber to hide yourself.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018025-1">25&nbsp;</span>And the king of Israel said, &#8220;Seize Micaiah and take him back to Amon the governor of the city and to Joash the king&#8217;s son, <span class="verse-num" id="v14018026-1">26&nbsp;</span>and say, &#8216;Thus says the king, Put this fellow in prison and feed him with meager rations of bread and water until I return in peace.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018027-1">27&nbsp;</span>And Micaiah said, &#8220;If you return in peace, the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> has not spoken by me.&#8221; And he said, &#8220;Hear, all you peoples!&#8221;</p>
<h3 id="p14018028.01-1">The Defeat and Death of Ahab</h3>
<p id="p14018028.07-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14018028-1">28&nbsp;</span>So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead. <span class="verse-num" id="v14018029-1">29&nbsp;</span>And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, &#8220;I will disguise myself and go into battle, but you wear your robes.&#8221; And the king of Israel disguised himself, and they went into battle. <span class="verse-num" id="v14018030-1">30&nbsp;</span>Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of his chariots, &#8220;Fight with neither small nor great, but only with the king of Israel.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018031-1">31&nbsp;</span>As soon as the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, they said, &#8220;It is the king of Israel.&#8221; So they turned to fight against him. And Jehoshaphat cried out, and the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> helped him; God drew them away from him. <span class="verse-num" id="v14018032-1">32&nbsp;</span>For as soon as the captains of the chariots saw that it was not the king of Israel, they turned back from pursuing him. <span class="verse-num" id="v14018033-1">33&nbsp;</span>But a certain man drew his bow at random and struck the king of Israel between the scale armor and the breastplate. Therefore he said to the driver of his chariot, &#8220;Turn around and carry me out of the battle, for I am wounded.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14018034-1">34&nbsp;</span>And the battle continued that day, and the king of Israel was propped up in his chariot facing the Syrians until evening. Then at sunset he died.</p>

<p id="p41016001.03-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v41016001-1">16:1&nbsp;</span>When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. <span class="verse-num" id="v41016002-1">2&nbsp;</span>And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. <span class="verse-num" id="v41016003-1">3&nbsp;</span>And they were saying to one another, &#8220;Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41016004-1">4&nbsp;</span>And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back&#8212;it was very large. <span class="verse-num" id="v41016005-1">5&nbsp;</span>And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. <span class="verse-num" id="v41016006-1">6&nbsp;</span>And he said to them, &#8220;Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. <span class="verse-num" id="v41016007-1">7&nbsp;</span>But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41016008-1">8&nbsp;</span>And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.</p>
<h3 id="p41016009.10-1">Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene</h3>
<p id="p41016009.15-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41016009-1">9&nbsp;</span>[[Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. <span class="verse-num" id="v41016010-1">10&nbsp;</span>She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. <span class="verse-num" id="v41016011-1">11&nbsp;</span>But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.</p>
<h3 id="p41016012.01-1">Jesus Appears to Two Disciples</h3>
<p id="p41016012.06-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41016012-1">12&nbsp;</span>After these things he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. <span class="verse-num" id="v41016013-1">13&nbsp;</span>And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.</p>
<h3 id="p41016014.01-1">The Great Commission</h3>
<p id="p41016014.04-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41016014-1">14&nbsp;</span>Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. <span class="verse-num" id="v41016015-1">15&nbsp;</span>And he said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41016016-1">16&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41016017-1">17&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues;</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41016018-1">18&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.&#8221;</span></p>

<h3 id="p14017001.01-1">Jehoshaphat Reigns in Judah</h3>
<p id="p14017001.05-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v14017001-1">17:1&nbsp;</span>Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place and strengthened himself against Israel. <span class="verse-num" id="v14017002-1">2&nbsp;</span>He placed forces in all the fortified cities of Judah and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim that Asa his father had captured. <span class="verse-num" id="v14017003-1">3&nbsp;</span>The <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the earlier ways of his father David. He did not seek the Baals, <span class="verse-num" id="v14017004-1">4&nbsp;</span>but sought the God of his father and walked in his commandments, and not according to the practices of Israel. <span class="verse-num" id="v14017005-1">5&nbsp;</span>Therefore the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> established the kingdom in his hand. And all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he had great riches and honor. <span class="verse-num" id="v14017006-1">6&nbsp;</span>His heart was courageous in the ways of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>. And furthermore, he took the high places and the Asherim out of Judah.</p>
<p id="p14017007.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14017007-1">7&nbsp;</span>In the third year of his reign he sent his officials, Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah; <span class="verse-num" id="v14017008-1">8&nbsp;</span>and with them the Levites, Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tobadonijah; and with these Levites, the priests Elishama and Jehoram. <span class="verse-num" id="v14017009-1">9&nbsp;</span>And they taught in Judah, having the Book of the Law of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> with them. They went about through all the cities of Judah and taught among the people.</p>
<p id="p14017010.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14017010-1">10&nbsp;</span>And the fear of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were around Judah, and they made no war against Jehoshaphat. <span class="verse-num" id="v14017011-1">11&nbsp;</span>Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents and silver for tribute, and the Arabians also brought him 7,700 rams and 7,700 goats. <span class="verse-num" id="v14017012-1">12&nbsp;</span>And Jehoshaphat grew steadily greater. He built in Judah fortresses and store cities, <span class="verse-num" id="v14017013-1">13&nbsp;</span>and he had large supplies in the cities of Judah. He had soldiers, mighty men of valor, in Jerusalem. <span class="verse-num" id="v14017014-1">14&nbsp;</span>This was the muster of them by fathers&#8217; houses: Of Judah, the commanders of thousands: Adnah the commander, with 300,000 mighty men of valor; <span class="verse-num" id="v14017015-1">15&nbsp;</span>and next to him Jehohanan the commander, with 280,000; <span class="verse-num" id="v14017016-1">16&nbsp;</span>and next to him Amasiah the son of Zichri, a volunteer for the service of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, with 200,000 mighty men of valor. <span class="verse-num" id="v14017017-1">17&nbsp;</span>Of Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty man of valor, with 200,000 men armed with bow and shield; <span class="verse-num" id="v14017018-1">18&nbsp;</span>and next to him Jehozabad with 180,000 armed for war. <span class="verse-num" id="v14017019-1">19&nbsp;</span>These were in the service of the king, besides those whom the king had placed in the fortified cities throughout all Judah.</p>

<p id="p41015001.05-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v41015001-1">15:1&nbsp;</span>And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole Council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015002-1">2&nbsp;</span>And Pilate asked him, &#8220;Are you the King of the Jews?&#8221; And he answered him, <span class="woc">&#8220;You have said so.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41015003-1">3&nbsp;</span>And the chief priests accused him of many things. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015004-1">4&nbsp;</span>And Pilate again asked him, &#8220;Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41015005-1">5&nbsp;</span>But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.</p>
<h3 id="p41015006.01-1">Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified</h3>
<p id="p41015006.07-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41015006-1">6&nbsp;</span>Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015007-1">7&nbsp;</span>And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015008-1">8&nbsp;</span>And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015009-1">9&nbsp;</span>And he answered them, saying, &#8220;Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41015010-1">10&nbsp;</span>For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015011-1">11&nbsp;</span>But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015012-1">12&nbsp;</span>And Pilate again said to them, &#8220;Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41015013-1">13&nbsp;</span>And they cried out again, &#8220;Crucify him.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41015014-1">14&nbsp;</span>And Pilate said to them, &#8220;Why, what evil has he done?&#8221; But they shouted all the more, &#8220;Crucify him.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41015015-1">15&nbsp;</span>So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.</p>
<h3 id="p41015016.01-1">Jesus Is Mocked</h3>
<p id="p41015016.04-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41015016-1">16&nbsp;</span>And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor&#8217;s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015017-1">17&nbsp;</span>And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015018-1">18&nbsp;</span>And they began to salute him, &#8220;Hail, King of the Jews!&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41015019-1">19&nbsp;</span>And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015020-1">20&nbsp;</span>And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.</p>
<h3 id="p41015021.01-1">The Crucifixion</h3>
<p id="p41015021.03-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41015021-1">21&nbsp;</span>And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015022-1">22&nbsp;</span>And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). <span class="verse-num" id="v41015023-1">23&nbsp;</span>And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015024-1">24&nbsp;</span>And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015025-1">25&nbsp;</span>And it was the third hour when they crucified him. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015026-1">26&nbsp;</span>And the inscription of the charge against him read, &#8220;The King of the Jews.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41015027-1">27&nbsp;</span>And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015029-1">29&nbsp;</span>And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, &#8220;Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, <span class="verse-num" id="v41015030-1">30&nbsp;</span>save yourself, and come down from the cross!&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41015031-1">31&nbsp;</span>So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, &#8220;He saved others; he cannot save himself. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015032-1">32&nbsp;</span>Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.&#8221; Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.</p>
<h3 id="p41015033.01-1">The Death of Jesus</h3>
<p id="p41015033.05-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41015033-1">33&nbsp;</span>And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015034-1">34&nbsp;</span>And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, <span class="woc">&#8220;Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?&#8221;</span> which means, <span class="woc">&#8220;My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41015035-1">35&nbsp;</span>And some of the bystanders hearing it said, &#8220;Behold, he is calling Elijah.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41015036-1">36&nbsp;</span>And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, &#8220;Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41015037-1">37&nbsp;</span>And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015038-1">38&nbsp;</span>And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015039-1">39&nbsp;</span>And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, &#8220;Truly this man was the Son of God!&#8221;</p>
<p id="p41015040.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41015040-1">40&nbsp;</span>There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015041-1">41&nbsp;</span>When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.</p>
<h3 id="p41015042.01-1">Jesus Is Buried</h3>
<p id="p41015042.04-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41015042-1">42&nbsp;</span>And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, <span class="verse-num" id="v41015043-1">43&nbsp;</span>Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the Council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015044-1">44&nbsp;</span>Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015045-1">45&nbsp;</span>And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015046-1">46&nbsp;</span>And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. <span class="verse-num" id="v41015047-1">47&nbsp;</span>Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.</p>

<h3 id="p14016001.01-1">Asa&#8217;s Last Years</h3>
<p id="p14016001.04-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v14016001-1">16:1&nbsp;</span>In the thirty-sixth year of the reign of Asa, Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and built Ramah, that he might permit no one to go out or come in to Asa king of Judah. <span class="verse-num" id="v14016002-1">2&nbsp;</span>Then Asa took silver and gold from the treasures of the house of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> and the king&#8217;s house and sent them to Ben-hadad king of Syria, who lived in Damascus, saying, <span class="verse-num" id="v14016003-1">3&nbsp;</span>&#8220;There is a covenant between me and you, as there was between my father and your father. Behold, I am sending to you silver and gold. Go, break your covenant with Baasha king of Israel, that he may withdraw from me.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14016004-1">4&nbsp;</span>And Ben-hadad listened to King Asa and sent the commanders of his armies against the cities of Israel, and they conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel-maim, and all the store cities of Naphtali. <span class="verse-num" id="v14016005-1">5&nbsp;</span>And when Baasha heard of it, he stopped building Ramah and let his work cease. <span class="verse-num" id="v14016006-1">6&nbsp;</span>Then King Asa took all Judah, and they carried away the stones of Ramah and its timber, with which Baasha had been building, and with them he built Geba and Mizpah.</p>
<p id="p14016007.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14016007-1">7&nbsp;</span>At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him, &#8220;Because you relied on the king of Syria, and did not rely on the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> your God, the army of the king of Syria has escaped you. <span class="verse-num" id="v14016008-1">8&nbsp;</span>Were not the Ethiopians and the Libyans a huge army with very many chariots and horsemen? Yet because you relied on the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, he gave them into your hand. <span class="verse-num" id="v14016009-1">9&nbsp;</span>For the eyes of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you will have wars.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14016010-1">10&nbsp;</span>Then Asa was angry with the seer and put him in the stocks in prison, for he was in a rage with him because of this. And Asa inflicted cruelties upon some of the people at the same time.</p>
<p id="p14016011.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14016011-1">11&nbsp;</span>The acts of Asa, from first to last, are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel. <span class="verse-num" id="v14016012-1">12&nbsp;</span>In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was diseased in his feet, and his disease became severe. Yet even in his disease he did not seek the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, but sought help from physicians. <span class="verse-num" id="v14016013-1">13&nbsp;</span>And Asa slept with his fathers, dying in the forty-first year of his reign. <span class="verse-num" id="v14016014-1">14&nbsp;</span>They buried him in the tomb that he had cut for himself in the city of David. They laid him on a bier that had been filled with various kinds of spices prepared by the perfumer&#8217;s art, and they made a very great fire in his honor.</p>

<p id="p41014001.06-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v41014001-1">14:1&nbsp;</span>It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him, <span class="verse-num" id="v41014002-1">2&nbsp;</span>for they said, &#8220;Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people.&#8221;</p>
<h3 id="p41014003.01-1">Jesus Anointed at Bethany</h3>
<p id="p41014003.05-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41014003-1">3&nbsp;</span>And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014004-1">4&nbsp;</span>There were some who said to themselves indignantly, &#8220;Why was the ointment wasted like that? <span class="verse-num" id="v41014005-1">5&nbsp;</span>For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.&#8221; And they scolded her. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014006-1">6&nbsp;</span>But Jesus said, <span class="woc">&#8220;Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41014007-1">7&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41014008-1">8&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41014009-1">9&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.&#8221;</span></p>
<h3 id="p41014010.01-1">Judas to Betray Jesus</h3>
<p id="p41014010.05-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41014010-1">10&nbsp;</span>Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014011-1">11&nbsp;</span>And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to betray him.</p>
<h3 id="p41014012.01-1">The Passover with the Disciples</h3>
<p id="p41014012.06-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41014012-1">12&nbsp;</span>And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, &#8220;Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41014013-1">13&nbsp;</span>And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him,</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41014014-1">14&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, &#8216;The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?&#8217;</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41014015-1">15&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41014016-1">16&nbsp;</span>And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.</p>
<p id="p41014017.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41014017-1">17&nbsp;</span>And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014018-1">18&nbsp;</span>And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, <span class="woc">&#8220;Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41014019-1">19&nbsp;</span>They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, &#8220;Is it I?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41014020-1">20&nbsp;</span>He said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41014021-1">21&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.&#8221;</span></p>
<h3 id="p41014022.01-1">Institution of the Lord&#8217;s Supper</h3>
<p id="p41014022.06-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41014022-1">22&nbsp;</span>And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, <span class="woc">&#8220;Take; this is my body.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41014023-1">23&nbsp;</span>And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014024-1">24&nbsp;</span>And he said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41014025-1">25&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.&#8221;</span></p>
<h3 id="p41014026.01-1">Jesus Foretells Peter&#8217;s Denial</h3>
<p id="p41014026.05-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41014026-1">26&nbsp;</span>And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014027-1">27&nbsp;</span>And Jesus said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;You will all fall away, for it is written, &#8216;I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.&#8217;</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41014028-1">28&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41014029-1">29&nbsp;</span>Peter said to him, &#8220;Even though they all fall away, I will not.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41014030-1">30&nbsp;</span>And Jesus said to him, <span class="woc">&#8220;Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41014031-1">31&nbsp;</span>But he said emphatically, &#8220;If I must die with you, I will not deny you.&#8221; And they all said the same.</p>
<h3 id="p41014032.01-1">Jesus Prays in Gethsemane</h3>
<p id="p41014032.05-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41014032-1">32&nbsp;</span>And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, <span class="woc">&#8220;Sit here while I pray.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41014033-1">33&nbsp;</span>And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014034-1">34&nbsp;</span>And he said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41014035-1">35&nbsp;</span>And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014036-1">36&nbsp;</span>And he said, <span class="woc">&#8220;Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41014037-1">37&nbsp;</span>And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, <span class="woc">&#8220;Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41014038-1">38&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41014039-1">39&nbsp;</span>And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014040-1">40&nbsp;</span>And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014041-1">41&nbsp;</span>And he came the third time and said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41014042-1">42&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.&#8221;</span></p>
<h3 id="p41014043.01-1">Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus</h3>
<p id="p41014043.06-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41014043-1">43&nbsp;</span>And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014044-1">44&nbsp;</span>Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, &#8220;The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41014045-1">45&nbsp;</span>And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, &#8220;Rabbi!&#8221; And he kissed him. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014046-1">46&nbsp;</span>And they laid hands on him and seized him. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014047-1">47&nbsp;</span>But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014048-1">48&nbsp;</span>And Jesus said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me?</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41014049-1">49&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41014050-1">50&nbsp;</span>And they all left him and fled.</p>
<h3 id="p41014051.01-1">A Young Man Flees</h3>
<p id="p41014051.05-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41014051-1">51&nbsp;</span>And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, <span class="verse-num" id="v41014052-1">52&nbsp;</span>but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.</p>
<h3 id="p41014053.01-1">Jesus Before the Council</h3>
<p id="p41014053.05-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41014053-1">53&nbsp;</span>And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014054-1">54&nbsp;</span>And Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014055-1">55&nbsp;</span>Now the chief priests and the whole Council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014056-1">56&nbsp;</span>For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014057-1">57&nbsp;</span>And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, <span class="verse-num" id="v41014058-1">58&nbsp;</span>&#8220;We heard him say, &#8216;I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41014059-1">59&nbsp;</span>Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014060-1">60&nbsp;</span>And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, &#8220;Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41014061-1">61&nbsp;</span>But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, &#8220;Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41014062-1">62&nbsp;</span>And Jesus said, <span class="woc">&#8220;I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41014063-1">63&nbsp;</span>And the high priest tore his garments and said, &#8220;What further witnesses do we need? <span class="verse-num" id="v41014064-1">64&nbsp;</span>You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?&#8221; And they all condemned him as deserving death. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014065-1">65&nbsp;</span>And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, &#8220;Prophesy!&#8221; And the guards received him with blows.</p>
<h3 id="p41014066.01-1">Peter Denies Jesus</h3>
<p id="p41014066.04-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41014066-1">66&nbsp;</span>And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came, <span class="verse-num" id="v41014067-1">67&nbsp;</span>and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, &#8220;You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41014068-1">68&nbsp;</span>But he denied it, saying, &#8220;I neither know nor understand what you mean.&#8221; And he went out into the gateway and the rooster crowed. <span class="verse-num" id="v41014069-1">69&nbsp;</span>And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, &#8220;This man is one of them.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41014070-1">70&nbsp;</span>But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, &#8220;Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41014071-1">71&nbsp;</span>But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, &#8220;I do not know this man of whom you speak.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41014072-1">72&nbsp;</span>And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, <span class="woc">&#8220;Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.&#8221;</span> And he broke down and wept.</p>

<h3 id="p14015001.01-1">Asa&#8217;s Religious Reforms</h3>
<p id="p14015001.04-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v14015001-1">15:1&nbsp;</span>The Spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded, <span class="verse-num" id="v14015002-1">2&nbsp;</span>and he went out to meet Asa and said to him, &#8220;Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin: The <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> is with you while you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you. <span class="verse-num" id="v14015003-1">3&nbsp;</span>For a long time Israel was without the true God, and without a teaching priest and without law, <span class="verse-num" id="v14015004-1">4&nbsp;</span>but when in their distress they turned to the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, the God of Israel, and sought him, he was found by them. <span class="verse-num" id="v14015005-1">5&nbsp;</span>In those times there was no peace to him who went out or to him who came in, for great disturbances afflicted all the inhabitants of the lands. <span class="verse-num" id="v14015006-1">6&nbsp;</span>They were broken in pieces. Nation was crushed by nation and city by city, for God troubled them with every sort of distress. <span class="verse-num" id="v14015007-1">7&nbsp;</span>But you, take courage! Do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p14015008.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14015008-1">8&nbsp;</span>As soon as Asa heard these words, the prophecy of Azariah the son of Oded, he took courage and put away the detestable idols from all the land of Judah and Benjamin and from the cities that he had taken in the hill country of Ephraim, and he repaired the altar of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> that was in front of the vestibule of the house of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>. <span class="verse-num" id="v14015009-1">9&nbsp;</span>And he gathered all Judah and Benjamin, and those from Ephraim, Manasseh, and Simeon who were residing with them, for great numbers had deserted to him from Israel when they saw that the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> his God was with him. <span class="verse-num" id="v14015010-1">10&nbsp;</span>They were gathered at Jerusalem in the third month of the fifteenth year of the reign of Asa. <span class="verse-num" id="v14015011-1">11&nbsp;</span>They sacrificed to the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> on that day from the spoil that they had brought 700 oxen and 7,000 sheep. <span class="verse-num" id="v14015012-1">12&nbsp;</span>And they entered into a covenant to seek the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and with all their soul, <span class="verse-num" id="v14015013-1">13&nbsp;</span>but that whoever would not seek the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, the God of Israel, should be put to death, whether young or old, man or woman. <span class="verse-num" id="v14015014-1">14&nbsp;</span>They swore an oath to the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> with a loud voice and with shouting and with trumpets and with horns. <span class="verse-num" id="v14015015-1">15&nbsp;</span>And all Judah rejoiced over the oath, for they had sworn with all their heart and had sought him with their whole desire, and he was found by them, and the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> gave them rest all around.</p>
<p id="p14015016.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14015016-1">16&nbsp;</span>Even Maacah, his mother, King Asa removed from being queen mother because she had made a detestable image for Asherah. Asa cut down her image, crushed it, and burned it at the brook Kidron. <span class="verse-num" id="v14015017-1">17&nbsp;</span>But the high places were not taken out of Israel. Nevertheless, the heart of Asa was wholly true all his days. <span class="verse-num" id="v14015018-1">18&nbsp;</span>And he brought into the house of God the sacred gifts of his father and his own sacred gifts, silver, and gold, and vessels. <span class="verse-num" id="v14015019-1">19&nbsp;</span>And there was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of the reign of Asa.</p>

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

<h3 id="p41013001.01-1">Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple</h3>
<p id="p41013001.07-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v41013001-1">13:1&nbsp;</span>And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, &#8220;Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41013002-1">2&nbsp;</span>And Jesus said to him, <span class="woc">&#8220;Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.&#8221;</span></p>
<h3 id="p41013003.01-1">Signs of the Close of the Age</h3>
<p id="p41013003.08-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41013003-1">3&nbsp;</span>And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, <span class="verse-num" id="v41013004-1">4&nbsp;</span>&#8220;Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41013005-1">5&nbsp;</span>And Jesus began to say to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;See that no one leads you astray.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013006-1">6&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Many will come in my name, saying, &#8216;I am he!&#8217; and they will lead many astray.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013007-1">7&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013008-1">8&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.</span></p>
<p id="p41013009.01-1"><span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013009-1">9&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">&#8220;But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013010-1">10&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013011-1">11&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013012-1">12&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013013-1">13&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And you will be hated by all for my name&#8217;s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.</span></p>
<h3 id="p41013014.01-1">The Abomination of Desolation</h3>
<p id="p41013014.05-1"><span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013014-1">14&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">&#8220;But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013015-1">15&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Let the one who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything out,</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013016-1">16&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013017-1">17&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days!</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013018-1">18&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Pray that it may not happen in winter.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013019-1">19&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">For in those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will be.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013020-1">20&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013021-1">21&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And then if anyone says to you, &#8216;Look, here is the Christ!&#8217; or &#8216;Look, there he is!&#8217; do not believe it.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013022-1">22&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013023-1">23&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">But be on guard; I have told you all things beforehand.</span></p>
<h3 id="p41013024.01-1">The Coming of the Son of Man</h3>
<p id="p41013024.08-1"><span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013024-1">24&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">&#8220;But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light,</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013025-1">25&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013026-1">26&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013027-1">27&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.</span></p>
<h3 id="p41013028.01-1">The Lesson of the Fig Tree</h3>
<p id="p41013028.07-1"><span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013028-1">28&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">&#8220;From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013029-1">29&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013030-1">30&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013031-1">31&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.</span></p>
<h3 id="p41013032.01-1">No One Knows That Day or Hour</h3>
<p id="p41013032.08-1"><span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013032-1">32&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">&#8220;But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013033-1">33&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013034-1">34&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013035-1">35&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Therefore stay awake&#8212;for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning&#8212;</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013036-1">36&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41013037-1">37&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.&#8221;</span></p>

<h3 id="p14014001.01-1">Asa Reigns in Judah</h3>
<p id="p14014001.05-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v14014001-1">14:1&nbsp;</span> Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David. And Asa his son reigned in his place. In his days the land had rest for ten years. <span class="verse-num" id="v14014002-1">2&nbsp;</span> And Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> his God. <span class="verse-num" id="v14014003-1">3&nbsp;</span>He took away the foreign altars and the high places and broke down the pillars and cut down the Asherim <span class="verse-num" id="v14014004-1">4&nbsp;</span>and commanded Judah to seek the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, the God of their fathers, and to keep the law and the commandment. <span class="verse-num" id="v14014005-1">5&nbsp;</span>He also took out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the incense altars. And the kingdom had rest under him. <span class="verse-num" id="v14014006-1">6&nbsp;</span>He built fortified cities in Judah, for the land had rest. He had no war in those years, for the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> gave him peace. <span class="verse-num" id="v14014007-1">7&nbsp;</span>And he said to Judah, &#8220;Let us build these cities and surround them with walls and towers, gates and bars. The land is still ours, because we have sought the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> our God. We have sought him, and he has given us peace on every side.&#8221; So they built and prospered. <span class="verse-num" id="v14014008-1">8&nbsp;</span>And Asa had an army of 300,000 from Judah, armed with large shields and spears, and 280,000 men from Benjamin that carried shields and drew bows. All these were mighty men of valor.</p>
<p id="p14014009.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14014009-1">9&nbsp;</span>Zerah the Ethiopian came out against them with an army of a million men and 300 chariots, and came as far as Mareshah. <span class="verse-num" id="v14014010-1">10&nbsp;</span>And Asa went out to meet him, and they drew up their lines of battle in the Valley of Zephathah at Mareshah. <span class="verse-num" id="v14014011-1">11&nbsp;</span>And Asa cried to the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> his God, &#8220;O <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, there is none like you to help, between the mighty and the weak. Help us, O <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this multitude. O <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, you are our God; let not man prevail against you.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14014012-1">12&nbsp;</span>So the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> defeated the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah, and the Ethiopians fled. <span class="verse-num" id="v14014013-1">13&nbsp;</span>Asa and the people who were with him pursued them as far as Gerar, and the Ethiopians fell until none remained alive, for they were broken before the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> and his army. The men of Judah carried away very much spoil. <span class="verse-num" id="v14014014-1">14&nbsp;</span>And they attacked all the cities around Gerar, for the fear of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> was upon them. They plundered all the cities, for there was much plunder in them. <span class="verse-num" id="v14014015-1">15&nbsp;</span>And they struck down the tents of those who had livestock and carried away sheep in abundance and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.</p>

<p id="p41012001.06-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v41012001-1">12:1&nbsp;</span>And he began to speak to them in parables. <span class="woc">&#8220;A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower, and leased it to tenants and went into another country.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012002-1">2&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012003-1">3&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012004-1">4&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Again he sent to them another servant, and they struck him on the head and treated him shamefully.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012005-1">5&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And he sent another, and him they killed. And so with many others: some they beat, and some they killed.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012006-1">6&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">He had still one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, &#8216;They will respect my son.&#8217;</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012007-1">7&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">But those tenants said to one another, &#8216;This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.&#8217;</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012008-1">8&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And they took him and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012009-1">9&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012010-1">10&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Have you not read this Scripture:</span></p>

<span class="indent"></span>has become the cornerstone;</span><br />
 <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012011-1">11&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">this was the Lord&#8217;s doing,<br />
<span class="indent"></span>and it is marvelous in our eyes&#8217;?&#8221;</span></p>

<p id="p41012012.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41012012-1">12&nbsp;</span>And they were seeking to arrest him but feared the people, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them. So they left him and went away.</p>
<h3 id="p41012013.01-1">Paying Taxes to Caesar</h3>
<p id="p41012013.05-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41012013-1">13&nbsp;</span>And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to trap him in his talk. <span class="verse-num" id="v41012014-1">14&nbsp;</span>And they came and said to him, &#8220;Teacher, we know that you are true and do not care about anyone&#8217;s opinion. For you are not swayed by appearances, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41012015-1">15&nbsp;</span>But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41012016-1">16&nbsp;</span>And they brought one. And he said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;Whose likeness and inscription is this?&#8221;</span> They said to him, &#8220;Caesar&#8217;s.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41012017-1">17&nbsp;</span>Jesus said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar&#8217;s, and to God the things that are God&#8217;s.&#8221;</span> And they marveled at him.</p>
<h3 id="p41012018.01-1">The Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection</h3>
<p id="p41012018.07-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41012018-1">18&nbsp;</span>And Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection. And they asked him a question, saying, <span class="verse-num" id="v41012019-1">19&nbsp;</span>&#8220;Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man&#8217;s brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. <span class="verse-num" id="v41012020-1">20&nbsp;</span>There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no offspring. <span class="verse-num" id="v41012021-1">21&nbsp;</span>And the second took her, and died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. <span class="verse-num" id="v41012022-1">22&nbsp;</span>And the seven left no offspring. Last of all the woman also died. <span class="verse-num" id="v41012023-1">23&nbsp;</span>In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p41012024.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41012024-1">24&nbsp;</span>Jesus said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God?</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012025-1">25&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012026-1">26&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, &#8216;I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob&#8217;?</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012027-1">27&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are quite wrong.&#8221;</span></p>
<h3 id="p41012028.01-1">The Great Commandment</h3>
<p id="p41012028.04-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41012028-1">28&nbsp;</span>And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, &#8220;Which commandment is the most important of all?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41012029-1">29&nbsp;</span>Jesus answered, <span class="woc">&#8220;The most important is, &#8216;Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012030-1">30&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.&#8217;</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012031-1">31&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">The second is this: &#8216;You shall love your neighbor as yourself.&#8217; There is no other commandment greater than these.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41012032-1">32&nbsp;</span>And the scribe said to him, &#8220;You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that he is one, and there is no other besides him. <span class="verse-num" id="v41012033-1">33&nbsp;</span>And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one&#8217;s neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41012034-1">34&nbsp;</span>And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, <span class="woc">&#8220;You are not far from the kingdom of God.&#8221;</span> And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions.</p>
<h3 id="p41012035.01-1">Whose Son Is the Christ?</h3>
<p id="p41012035.06-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41012035-1">35&nbsp;</span>And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, <span class="woc">&#8220;How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012036-1">36&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared,</span></p>

Sit at my right hand,<br />
<span class="indent"></span>until I put your enemies under your feet.&#8217;</span></p>

<p class="same-paragraph" id="p41012037.01-1"><span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012037-1">37&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?&#8221;</span> And the great throng heard him gladly.</p>
<h3 id="p41012038.01-1">Beware of the Scribes</h3>
<p id="p41012038.05-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41012038-1">38&nbsp;</span>And in his teaching he said, <span class="woc">&#8220;Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the marketplaces</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012039-1">39&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">and have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts,</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012040-1">40&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">who devour widows&#8217; houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.&#8221;</span></p>
<h3 id="p41012041.01-1">The Widow&#8217;s Offering</h3>
<p id="p41012041.04-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41012041-1">41&nbsp;</span>And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. <span class="verse-num" id="v41012042-1">42&nbsp;</span>And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. <span class="verse-num" id="v41012043-1">43&nbsp;</span>And he called his disciples to him and said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41012044-1">44&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.&#8221;</span></p>

<h3 id="p14013001.01-1">Abijah Reigns in Judah</h3>
<p id="p14013001.05-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v14013001-1">13:1&nbsp;</span>In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah began to reign over Judah. <span class="verse-num" id="v14013002-1">2&nbsp;</span>He reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother&#8217;s name was Micaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah.</p>
<p id="p14013002.19-1">Now there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. <span class="verse-num" id="v14013003-1">3&nbsp;</span>Abijah went out to battle, having an army of valiant men of war, 400,000 chosen men. And Jeroboam drew up his line of battle against him with 800,000 chosen mighty warriors. <span class="verse-num" id="v14013004-1">4&nbsp;</span>Then Abijah stood up on Mount Zemaraim that is in the hill country of Ephraim and said, &#8220;Hear me, O Jeroboam and all Israel! <span class="verse-num" id="v14013005-1">5&nbsp;</span>Ought you not to know that the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> God of Israel gave the kingship over Israel forever to David and his sons by a covenant of salt? <span class="verse-num" id="v14013006-1">6&nbsp;</span>Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, a servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up and rebelled against his lord, <span class="verse-num" id="v14013007-1">7&nbsp;</span>and certain worthless scoundrels gathered about him and defied Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and irresolute and could not withstand them.</p>
<p id="p14013008.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14013008-1">8&nbsp;</span>&#8220;And now you think to withstand the kingdom of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> in the hand of the sons of David, because you are a great multitude and have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made you for gods. <span class="verse-num" id="v14013009-1">9&nbsp;</span>Have you not driven out the priests of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made priests for yourselves like the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes for ordination with a young bull or seven rams becomes a priest of what are no gods. <span class="verse-num" id="v14013010-1">10&nbsp;</span>But as for us, the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> is our God, and we have not forsaken him. We have priests ministering to the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> who are sons of Aaron, and Levites for their service. <span class="verse-num" id="v14013011-1">11&nbsp;</span>They offer to the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> every morning and every evening burnt offerings and incense of sweet spices, set out the showbread on the table of pure gold, and care for the golden lampstand that its lamps may burn every evening. For we keep the charge of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> our God, but you have forsaken him. <span class="verse-num" id="v14013012-1">12&nbsp;</span>Behold, God is with us at our head, and his priests with their battle trumpets to sound the call to battle against you. O sons of Israel, do not fight against the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, the God of your fathers, for you cannot succeed.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p14013013.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14013013-1">13&nbsp;</span>Jeroboam had sent an ambush around to come upon them from behind. Thus his troops were in front of Judah, and the ambush was behind them. <span class="verse-num" id="v14013014-1">14&nbsp;</span>And when Judah looked, behold, the battle was in front of and behind them. And they cried to the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, and the priests blew the trumpets. <span class="verse-num" id="v14013015-1">15&nbsp;</span>Then the men of Judah raised the battle shout. And when the men of Judah shouted, God defeated Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. <span class="verse-num" id="v14013016-1">16&nbsp;</span>The men of Israel fled before Judah, and God gave them into their hand. <span class="verse-num" id="v14013017-1">17&nbsp;</span>Abijah and his people struck them with great force, so there fell slain of Israel 500,000 chosen men. <span class="verse-num" id="v14013018-1">18&nbsp;</span>Thus the men of Israel were subdued at that time, and the men of Judah prevailed, because they relied on the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, the God of their fathers. <span class="verse-num" id="v14013019-1">19&nbsp;</span>And Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took cities from him, Bethel with its villages and Jeshanah with its villages and Ephron with its villages. <span class="verse-num" id="v14013020-1">20&nbsp;</span>Jeroboam did not recover his power in the days of Abijah. And the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> struck him down, and he died. <span class="verse-num" id="v14013021-1">21&nbsp;</span>But Abijah grew mighty. And he took fourteen wives and had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters. <span class="verse-num" id="v14013022-1">22&nbsp;</span>The rest of the acts of Abijah, his ways and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo.</p>

<h3 id="p41011001.01-1">The Triumphal Entry</h3>
<p id="p41011001.04-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v41011001-1">11:1&nbsp;</span>Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples <span class="verse-num" id="v41011002-1">2&nbsp;</span>and said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41011003-1">3&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">If anyone says to you, &#8216;Why are you doing this?&#8217; say, &#8216;The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.&#8217;&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41011004-1">4&nbsp;</span>And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. <span class="verse-num" id="v41011005-1">5&nbsp;</span>And some of those standing there said to them, &#8220;What are you doing, untying the colt?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41011006-1">6&nbsp;</span>And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. <span class="verse-num" id="v41011007-1">7&nbsp;</span>And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. <span class="verse-num" id="v41011008-1">8&nbsp;</span>And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. <span class="verse-num" id="v41011009-1">9&nbsp;</span>And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, &#8220;Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! <span class="verse-num" id="v41011010-1">10&nbsp;</span>Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!&#8221;</p>
<p id="p41011011.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41011011-1">11&nbsp;</span>And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.</p>
<h3 id="p41011012.01-1">Jesus Curses the Fig Tree</h3>
<p id="p41011012.06-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41011012-1">12&nbsp;</span>On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry. <span class="verse-num" id="v41011013-1">13&nbsp;</span>And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. <span class="verse-num" id="v41011014-1">14&nbsp;</span>And he said to it, <span class="woc">&#8220;May no one ever eat fruit from you again.&#8221;</span> And his disciples heard it.</p>
<h3 id="p41011015.01-1">Jesus Cleanses the Temple</h3>
<p id="p41011015.05-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41011015-1">15&nbsp;</span>And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. <span class="verse-num" id="v41011016-1">16&nbsp;</span>And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. <span class="verse-num" id="v41011017-1">17&nbsp;</span>And he was teaching them and saying to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;Is it not written, &#8216;My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations&#8217;? But you have made it a den of robbers.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41011018-1">18&nbsp;</span>And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because all the crowd was astonished at his teaching. <span class="verse-num" id="v41011019-1">19&nbsp;</span>And when evening came they went out of the city.</p>
<h3 id="p41011020.01-1">The Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree</h3>
<p id="p41011020.08-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41011020-1">20&nbsp;</span>As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. <span class="verse-num" id="v41011021-1">21&nbsp;</span>And Peter remembered and said to him, &#8220;Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41011022-1">22&nbsp;</span>And Jesus answered them, <span class="woc">&#8220;Have faith in God.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41011023-1">23&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, &#8216;Be taken up and thrown into the sea,&#8217; and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41011024-1">24&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41011025-1">25&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.&#8221;</span></p>
<h3 id="p41011027.01-1">The Authority of Jesus Challenged</h3>
<p id="p41011027.06-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v41011027-1">27&nbsp;</span>And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him, <span class="verse-num" id="v41011028-1">28&nbsp;</span>and they said to him, &#8220;By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v41011029-1">29&nbsp;</span>Jesus said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v41011030-1">30&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Was the baptism of John from heaven or from man? Answer me.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v41011031-1">31&nbsp;</span>And they discussed it with one another, saying, &#8220;If we say, &#8216;From heaven,&#8217; he will say, &#8216;Why then did you not believe him?&#8217; <span class="verse-num" id="v41011032-1">32&nbsp;</span>But shall we say, &#8216;From man&#8217;?&#8221;&#8212;they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was a prophet. <span class="verse-num" id="v41011033-1">33&nbsp;</span>So they answered Jesus, &#8220;We do not know.&#8221; And Jesus said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.&#8221;</span></p>

<h3 id="p14012001.01-1">Egypt Plunders Jerusalem</h3>
<p id="p14012001.04-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v14012001-1">12:1&nbsp;</span>When the rule of Rehoboam was established and he was strong, he abandoned the law of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, and all Israel with him. <span class="verse-num" id="v14012002-1">2&nbsp;</span>In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, because they had been unfaithful to the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem <span class="verse-num" id="v14012003-1">3&nbsp;</span>with 1,200 chariots and 60,000 horsemen. And the people were without number who came with him from Egypt&#8212;Libyans, Sukkiim, and Ethiopians. <span class="verse-num" id="v14012004-1">4&nbsp;</span>And he took the fortified cities of Judah and came as far as Jerusalem. <span class="verse-num" id="v14012005-1">5&nbsp;</span>Then Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and to the princes of Judah, who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, &#8220;Thus says the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, &#8216;You abandoned me, so I have abandoned you to the hand of Shishak.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14012006-1">6&nbsp;</span>Then the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, &#8220;The <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> is righteous.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v14012007-1">7&nbsp;</span>When the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> came to Shemaiah: &#8220;They have humbled themselves. I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance, and my wrath shall not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. <span class="verse-num" id="v14012008-1">8&nbsp;</span>Nevertheless, they shall be servants to him, that they may know my service and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p14012009.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14012009-1">9&nbsp;</span>So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem. He took away the treasures of the house of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> and the treasures of the king&#8217;s house. He took away everything. He also took away the shields of gold that Solomon had made, <span class="verse-num" id="v14012010-1">10&nbsp;</span>and King Rehoboam made in their place shields of bronze and committed them to the hands of the officers of the guard, who kept the door of the king&#8217;s house. <span class="verse-num" id="v14012011-1">11&nbsp;</span>And as often as the king went into the house of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>, the guard came and carried them and brought them back to the guardroom. <span class="verse-num" id="v14012012-1">12&nbsp;</span>And when he humbled himself the wrath of the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> turned from him, so as not to make a complete destruction. Moreover, conditions were good in Judah.</p>
<p id="p14012013.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14012013-1">13&nbsp;</span>So King Rehoboam grew strong in Jerusalem and reigned. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city that the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel to put his name there. His mother&#8217;s name was Naamah the Ammonite. <span class="verse-num" id="v14012014-1">14&nbsp;</span>And he did evil, for he did not set his heart to seek the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span>.</p>
<p id="p14012015.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v14012015-1">15&nbsp;</span>Now the acts of Rehoboam, from first to last, are they not written in the chronicles of Shemaiah the prophet and of Iddo the seer? There were continual wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam. <span class="verse-num" id="v14012016-1">16&nbsp;</span>And Rehoboam slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David, and Abijah his son reigned in his place.</p>
