Finding the Perfect Way to Display Your Portraits

We often get asked for recommendations on how to display the wall portraits that we create for our family portrait clients. There are many fun and unique things to do with your photos; you may want to hang them in traditional frames or canvases, make a photo collage, or maybe even do something entirely unique. No matter what you decide to do we can help you select the perfect materials and the right sizes for your portraits.

Traditional Wall Portraits

One popular way to display your family photos is in traditional frames. We offer a wide variety of beautiful framed print options that you can consider.

Frames come in many colors and styles, including a few boutique styles that we’ll be telling you more about soon… Any framed print that you purchase from us will arrive as a complete piece that is ready to hang. Of course you always have the option to frame your portraits yourself. There are many ways to add your own style to the process and you might consider making them non-traditional by painting or decorating them. You might do this to make the frame better fit the tone and personality of the portrait, or may you just want to do it because it’s fun and it matches your own personality!

Alternatives to frames include Canvas Prints, High Gloss Metal Prints, and Float Wraps. All three of these options really focus the attention on the image itself (rather than diluting it with a frame or a mat). They can hang almost anywhere and they throw a very unique spin on your normal decorating. We have samples of all of these products available to show you when you come in for your ordering session.

Gallery Walls

A very popular way to display a number of images from a family portrait session (or images from several sessions over a few years) is to make a gallery wall that is specifically designed to display your portraits. This can consist of a shelf with a variety of frames, canvases, or mounted prints, or it could be a carefully designed collage wall with several pieces mounted together in a pattern. Your portraits can be displayed here for everyone to see when they visit.

Peter Walsh, Live in Calgary

I recently had the privilege to attend a private meeting between organizing expert Peter Walsh and the members of the POC Calgary (the Calgary chapter of Professional Organizers in Canada). Peter was in town for a speaking engagement at the Boyce Theater on the Calgary Stampede grounds (GetRealLive Presents PETER WALSH LIVE in CALGARY) and POC Calgary arranged for a private session with him before the main show.

It was a very casual question and answer session and the local organizers got to pick his brain and learn about a few ideas that the general public wouldn’t normally get to hear. I did some candid photography during the session and then we also did a large group photo with all of the participants together and then each of the Organizers got to have an individual portrait with Peter as well.

Special thanks to Organizing Calgary for having me in to photograph their meeting and then also inviting me to stay for the main show afterwards. It was a really interesting event and I learned a lot. Peter Walsh is a very engaging speaker and it was worth the time spent to hear what he had to say.

Calgary Stampede Event Photography

The annual Calgary Stampede is less than 70 days away; Stampede breakfasts, BBQ’s, networking events, and corporate parties are all being booked as we speak. One of the best things about corporate events are the people you meet and the memories you make while there. A Calgary Event Photographer can capture those memories for you and make sure that you and the guests at your event will remember them for a long time!

Photobooths for Events

One great way to remember the good times you and your guests have at your Stampede event is with a custom photobooth. Photobooths are perfect for Stampede events because most people already have their cowboy boots and hats and their western shirts on, so the costume is already ready to go. Add in a some bandannas, bolo ties, prop guns, and a western themed backdrop and people are ready to go crazy for the camera.

Free Desktop Wallpaper

As a little bonus for my friends and followers every month I provide a free image for use as your desktop background wallpaper on your computer. Each beautiful photo is a picture that I have created and it always includes a calendar overlay for the month. I know that I’m always looking for a calendar and having one on my desktop is very convenient!

The wallpaper image for this month is from a trip to the prairies to the South-East of Calgary. I had been trying to find a Meadowlark all through the spring leading up to this without much success. I had seen a couple, but never managed to make any great images. I was very excited to find this one happily singing away on a fencepost. Their song is even more beautiful than the bird!

We Raised over $1300 for Charity!

Our 3rd annual Calgary Dog Photography event – Dog Day 2013 – was last weekend at PAWSitively Natural Dog Daycare. The event was a complete success and everyone had a great time.

Here are a few of the fun statistics from the day:

• 30 families visited the photography studio
• 38 dogs and 1 cat sat for pet portraits
• over 1400 images were created throughout the day
• we raised $1300 for our charity partner PALS | Pet Access League Society

It was another truly amazing day and I’m so proud of our community! Thanks to all the help from the volunteers at PALS, the staff at PAWSitively Natural, and an awesome lunch that was provided by (Melrose Cafe & Bar.

Thanks so much to everyone that participated and helped make our Pet Portrait day a total success!

Fundraiser for Kids Cancer Care

I volunteered my time to photograph a recent charity fundraiser hosted by my friend Sarah Wingert in support of the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta. Sarah had her head shaved bald to raise money for the KCCFA and raised over $10,000 to help support kids and families impacted by childhood cancer.

The wallpaper image for this month is from a trip to the prairies to the South-East of Calgary. I went out to do some landscape photography at sunset. It was the one day of the month when the moonrise coincided with the sunset, which often leads to spectacular landscape scenery. Although I was really planning to create some really cool images that involved the rising moon, but this silhouette of a pumpjack against the setting sun was the image that jumped out at me that night. Oilfield pump jacks are scattered all over the prairie landscape, but most of us rarely see them looking as beautiful as this!

Every year at Dog Day we offer a couple of custom products to our participants. This year we have a brand new design of the traditional 12×24 Custom Wall Panel and we also have 2 different sizes of framed prints. The following images are pictures of the actual products we have available so you can see what they really look like and to compare their sizes. These samples will be on display at PAWSitively Natural Dog Daycare early next week so you can go in to have a look at them!
