Stampede Plumbing and Heating is a Calgary company that provides plumbing and heating installation services for high end home builders. They recently went through a complete rebuild of their website in order to better show off their products and services. They worked closely with BottomLine Marketing to create a new website and develop a brand marketing strategy that complemented the luxury products and services that they provide.

Bottomline Marketing is a niche advertising firm that works with service providers in the new home construction industry. We have worked together on several projects in the past and we were able to use that experience to quickly create a brief for the commercial photography that they needed. We made a variety of images designed to show off their showroom and the work areas of their shop. We also visited a recent residential construction project to make images of some the more interesting equipment that they install for their clients in luxury homes in Calgary.

Commercial and Architectural Photography

Endure Electric was involved in a very impressive residential housing project in NW Calgary in which they installed a wide variety of lighting, in floor heating, specialty appliances, and other powered equipment. They needed some images from the project for use on their website, marketing collateral, and other promotional materials that they could use to show off the equipment and control systems installed in the house.

We met up with the owner of the company to get a tour of the house and to discuss the images that he wanted for his marketing needs. We were able to quickly focus in on the key areas of the installation that he wanted to photograph and suggested an approach that we could use to make those images. While the lighting in the house was the major focus of the photoshoot, we also created images of the, the air conditioning system controls, the home theater and media system, and the centrally located lighting control system.

I see websites and marketing pieces for small businesses in Calgary all the time that are generic and boring. They use the same typical stock photography that their competitors use. Or they use photos of people that don’t actually work in the business they are promoting. Or even worse, they use poor quality images that don’t truly represent the vibrant business that they want to show their clientele.

The images in this article are from a recent on-location commercial photography session that I had with Cliff Keveryga of Calgary Home Inspections. This is not the first time that I’ve photographed a home inspector, but it was the first time that I worked with an inspector that understood the need to show off who he is and what he does in the pictures he uses on his website. He also understood that if he wants his website to look great then he needs to have vibrant and well lit photographs.

We created a wide variety of images for Cliff to review and he ended up choosing a few great photos that show off his professionalism and the quality tools that he uses to practice his trade. The photos of Cliff in action will show his prospective clients that he has the tools required to do his job and that he knows how to use them. This may seem subtle, but it really is important.

Home Inspection is a very competitive business in Calgary and just taking the extra step of using great photos of the actual business owner in action will help his clients to know, like, and trust him before they have ever even met him. I was asked to photograph an industrial demonstration hosted by Blue Spark Energy to show off their Blue Spark WASPâ„¢ (Wireline Applied Stimulation Pulsing) technology. The process is designed to improve the performance of oil wells by clearing existing perforations and flow paths or creating new pathways as required without damaging the well infrastructure. The technology has been proven in petroleum recovery applications around the world.

The demonstration was done by subjecting simulated sections of well casing that were thoroughly encased in concrete to the WASP technology. I created high resolution product photographs of each of the test sections both before and after the demonstration. The before and after image files were also merged together into an animated file that Blue Spark Energy could use on their website and social media accounts, and for presentations of the technology when live demonstrations aren’t possible or feasible.

This is one example of how I can help my commercial photography clients to create the digital materials that they need to present their products and services in the best possible way.

Life Sized Safety Poster

If you have ever worked at or visited a large scale industrial manufacturing facility you will understand how important safety is. One small part of any sites safety program is their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. This is especially true for continuous processes such as a chemical processing plant.

I was contracted to create life sized portraits of an Agrium employee wearing the full set of PPE required to be worn inside the plant site at the company’s Carseland Nitrogen Operations facility. They were preparing for an extended maintenance turnaround and knew that they would have a significant number of workers on-site that had never worked at the facility before. Ensuring that they met their safety goals through the shutdown required some extra precautions.

These portraits were used on a set of life-sized safety posters that were on-display at the site for the duration of the turn-around. Every time an employee or contractor arrived at the site or entered a key work area within the plant they first had to pass by one of these posters that clearly showed the PPE that they were required to wear.

It was a great new take on an old problem that every industrial site has to deal with when they need to communicate their safety gear requirements to employees (new and old).

Executive Headshots for the NEMA Board of Directors

I was invited to a board meeting for the Board of Directors of the National Exempt Market Association (NEMA) to create individual executive portraits for any of the board members that need new headshots and also to create a group photo that could be used on the cover of NEMA’s quarterly magazine.

The president of NEMA, Craig Skauge, is very creative and he had the idea to create the image with all of the board members sitting at a round conference table and asked if I thought I could do it. While it’s certainly not a shot that I pull off every day I knew that I had the required equipment and I knew exactly what I needed to do to make it work. It was a very fun shoot and we were able to get them the images they needed very quickly.

Exempt Edge Magazine

Exempt Edge Magazine is a trade publication produced by NEMA for about about the Exempt Market financial industry in Canada. It is published quarterly and it goes out to all NEMA members. It can also be downloaded for free from the NEMA website. It has loads of valuable information for anyone interested in investing in non-traditional markets.

A number of other images that I have created (both at this session and at previous jobs for NEMA and other Exempt Market dealing companies) also appear in the Fall 2013 edition of the magazine. See the gallery below for a few of those images!

Family Portrait Mini Sessions

When photographing families in the studio we can’t just rely on the surrounding scenery to provide a beautiful backdrop; we have to provide our own! Sometimes the simplest background is the best and one of the most popular options we use is the high key white backdrop. This is timeless and makes the resulting images all about the subject. I love this look and it works well for almost every family.

This family took part in a set of mini sessions I offered as a fundraiser for the families at a Calgary elementary school before Christmas. They loved the images and ordered a variety of prints to give to their friends and families, and they also ordered some custom made Christmas greeting cards. Wedding Photobooth

We took a trip down to Waterton National Park last weekend to setup a photobooth for the family and guests at a wedding at the Bayshore Inn in downtown Waterton. It was a “destination” wedding as most of the guests were from either San Diego or Peru. Because of this they were truly in vacation/party mode and they had a blast. It also meant that they were really trying to get into the Alberta tradition and almost everyone wanted to use the Cowboy hats, bandanas, and toy guns that we brought along. We also went through dozens of fake mustaches and plenty of other fun photobooth props, but the cowboy hats were definitely the big hit.
