TNT AND TBS TO BECOME FIRST NATIONAL ENTERTAINMENT NETWORKS TO OFFER LIVE STREAMING 24/7

Live Stream of TBS and TNT Feeds to Start This Summer

TBS and TNT are about to become the first national entertainment networks in the industry to stream on-air content live across multiple platforms 24/7, including through the networks’ websites and a pair of newly created Watch TNT and Watch TBS apps. The announcement was made during TNT and TBS’s annual Upfront presentation today in New York. Live streaming is the latest phase in the rollout of TV Everywhere, the industry-wide initiative that gives subscribers to cable, satellite and telco video services access to more of their favorite shows across a wide range of digital platforms.

“Starting this summer, subscribers will be able to watch TBS and TNT live – anytime, anywhere, on multiple devices,” Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks, told the Upfront audience. “Tablets and smartphones become television sets, bringing new opportunities for us and for advertisers.”

TNT and TBS will begin their live streaming just as both networks are in the midst of the their summer programming, which for TNT includes returning series Rizzoli & Isles, Falling Skies, Major Crimes, Perception, Franklin & Bash and newcomers King & Maxwell, The Hero, 72 Hours and Cold Justice. TBS’s summer lineup includes the second season of the hit sitcom Sullivan & Son and the new series Deon Cole’s Black Box, and Deal With It. Also available through live streaming will be TNT’s award-winning coverage of the NBA, including the regular season, playoffs and All-Star Weekend; TBS’s regular-season and playoff coverage of Major League Baseball; and both network’s coverage of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.

The TNT and TBS live streams will be available through http://www.tntdrama.com and http://www.tbs.com, as well as through the networks’ newly created iPhone/iPad apps, with additional platforms added by the end of the year. The free Watch TNT and Watch TBS apps will be made available just prior to the live-streaming launch. To watch the live streams, viewers will be required to log in using their cable/satellite-provider account information.

TBS AND TNT UNVEIL EXTENSIVE DEVELOPMENT SLATE WITH PROJECTS FROM TELEVISION’S TOP STORYTELLERS

TNT and TBS, two of cable’s most successful brands, have unveiled an extensive slate of series being developed with some of the industry’s best storytellers. The slate reflects the network’s programming strategies, which were laid out by network executives during TNT and TBS’s annual Upfront presentation today in New York. Among the many high-profile storytellers developing new projects for TBS and TNT are Steven Spielberg, Steve Carell, Diablo Cody, Denis Leary, Sylvester Stallone, Dick Wolf, Nicholas Sparks, Marcia Clark, Dee Johnson, Walt Becker, Jamie Foxx and James Duff, to name a few.

“For a decade, we’ve been beating the drum the loudest – that cable is as good as broadcast,” said Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks, which includes TBS and TNT, as well as truTV and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). “Now, our industry has reached a tipping point. From creative strength to ratings power, cable has emerged as the leader in television. I’m proud of the role we’ve played at TNT and TBS. Today, we’re looking toward the next horizon – becoming a multiscreen video company serving multiple audiences.”

Koonin highlighted some of TBS and TNT’s successes in the multiscreen world, like inviting fans to re-create an entire episode of TBS’s CONAN through crowd-sourcing and fostering the creation of “Rizzles,” an online community of Rizzoli & Isles devotees who create fan fiction centering on their favorite TNT drama. Using a new, multi-dimensional research tool called ATHENA (Advanced Tool for Harnessing and Evaluating Network Audiences), TBS and TNT have begun to measure viewer engagement with the networks through social media and other digital platforms.

Koonin closed his remarks with the announcement that this summer, TBS and TNT will become the industry’s first national entertainment networks to offer live streaming of their on-air lineups 24/7.

David Levy, president of sales, distribution and sports, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., spoke about the benefits TNT and TBS offer the advertising community. “We have a strong understanding of our audience and how they consume Turner’s brands and content across multiple screens, and we’re leveraging that to the advantage of our advertising partners,” Levy said. “With brands like TBS and TNT, the Turner portfolio consists of leading television networks, plus digital and mobile platforms. Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TBS, TNT and Turner Classic Movies (TCM), rolled out TNT and TBS’s programming strategy and original series lineups for 2013-14. “This is a time of great changes in our business – new technologies, new distribution platforms, new creative voices,” Wright said. “But with all that exciting change, one thing remains constant: Great stories are the centerpiece of our business. And great stories come from great storytellers. Fortunately for us, some of the best, most talented storytellers in television are bringing their gifts to Turner.”

TNT and TBS’s new development slates mark extended relationships with Steven Spielberg, Dick Wolf and James Duff, who currently have projects with the networks. Other creative partners currently working with the networks include Frank Darabont, Jerry Bruckheimer, Mark Burnett, Michael M. Robin, Greer Shephard, Bill Lawrence, Vince Vaughn, Peter Billingsley, Rob Long, Jamie Tarses, David Baldacci, Michael Bay, Howard Gordon, Conan O’Brien, CeeLo Green, Dwayne Johnson, Howie Mandel and Funny Or Die, to name a few.

“We aim for creative distinction by giving our talented storytellers clear direction, then getting out of their way and encouraging them to tell their stories in their own unique voice,” Wright said. “TNT viewers can rely on us to consistently deliver accessible content, told by unique, powerful voices, and brought to life by distinctive onscreen talent – all working together to deliver that quality mainstream viewing experience.”

TNT has nine original series on tap this summer, including the return of such hit series as Rizzoli & Isles, Falling Skies, Major Crimes, Perception and Franklin & Bash. TNT will also launch the new crime drama King & Maxwell, starring Jon Tenney and Rebecca Romijn, and three new unscripted series, The Hero, a competition series headlined by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson; 72 Hours, a race-against-the-clock competition hosted by Brandon Johnson; and Cold Justice, an unscripted procedural from Law & Order producer Dick Wolf.

Coming later in the year to TNT are the new series Lost Angels, an eagerly anticipated scripted drama from Frank Darabont; S.O.B. (Save Our Business), an unscripted makeover series featuring entrepreneur Peter Jones; and Marshal Law: Texas, an unscripted procedural from Jerry Bruckheimer. In 2014, TNT will launch two new scripted dramas: The Last Ship, starring Eric Dane and executive-produced by Michael Bay, and Legends, starring Sean Bean and executive-produced by Homeland‘s Howard Gordon. TNT will also roll out the unscripted series Life Flight, an in-depth look at heroic air-ambulance teams; Nashville Confidential, a docudrama set in the country music capital; and Inside Job, which puts executive job candidates through a unique screening process.

In addition, TNT has two pilots currently under consideration: an untitled bounty-hunter drama starring Oscar® winner Geena Davis and executive-produced by Dean Devlin, and Murder in the First, a new crime drama from Steven Bochco starring Taye Diggs and Kathleen Robertson.

Turning to TBS, Wright talked about the network’s “smart with heart” strategy. “‘Smart with heart’ means we look for projects from funny writers with strong voices who tend to create shows that are inherently optimistic and big hearted, giving them the accessibility of broadcast comedies – and equally importantly – making them a great fit with The Big Bang Theory, one of the most accessible comedies in recent memory,” he said.

TBS’s slate of original programming includes three sitcoms that successfully launched out of The Big Bang Theory: Men at Work, currently in its second season; Sullivan & Son, which returns for its second season in June; and Cougar Town, which returns for its fifth season in 2014. The lineup also includes unscripted and alternative fare like the hit King of the Nerds, which returns for its second season in 2014, as well as the upcoming Deon Cole’s Black Box, starring CONAN writer and actor Deon Cole; Deal With It, a hidden-camera competition series hosted by Theo Von and executive-produced by Howie Mandel; Bam’s Bad Ass Game Show, an over-the-top competition series hosted by Jackass star Bam Margera; and Trust Me, I’m a Game Show Host, a new series from Mark Burnett and featuring D.L. Hughley and Michael Ian Black as deceitful hosts.

TBS just recently announced series pickups for Ground Floor, a workplace comedy with a romantic twist from Cougar Town executive producer Bill Lawrence, and The CeeLo Life (working title), an unscripted series that will follow Grammy winner CeeLo Green as he works his way through jam-packed days and nights. And this November, TBS will launch a new late-night series hosted by comedian and podcast superstar Pete Holmes and set to air following CONAN.

Portal House
This project is the story of a group of young scientists who, while investigating what they believe to be a haunted house, stumble upon a portal into the time-space continuum. Things then take a turn for the worse when one of their own vanishes into the portal.

The Last Cop
Life can seem to pass in the blink of an eye, but for LAPD cop Mick Branigan it actually did in this project based on the hit German series. After almost 20 years in a coma, Mick awakens to a changed world – his loving wife has moved on, his teenage daughter doesn’t know him, and his old police force bears no resemblance to the one he knew in the ’90s.

A Bend in the Road

But what Miles doesn’t realize is just how many secrets are buried beneath the very streets he walks – the most unsettling having to do with the unsolved murder of his wife.

Guilt by Association
Based on the debut novel by Marcia Clark, lead prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson trial, this project centers on Rachel Knight, a gutsy Deputy District Attorney in the Special Trials Unit of the D.A.’s office for L.A. County. She works closely with a tough-as-nails female LAPD detective named Bailey Keller and a stylish female prosecutor named Toni LaCollette, both of whom routinely crash at Rachel’s place.

Lew Archer
Based on the title character from Ross McDonald’s popular novels, this project from The Closer creator James Duff and Close to Home creator Jim Leonard follows the sleuth many consider to be “the original P.I.”

Crushed
This primetime soap focuses on two rich lovers: Caz, whose father, Jeremy owns Terra Winery, and Daphne, Jeremy’s young wife. They make a unique bet to determine who has the best seductive powers.

Basic cable’s #1 summer drama among key demos tells the extraordinary story about life and survival in the wake of a catastrophic alien invasion. Noah Wyle stars as a college professor who becomes an unlikely resistance leader in this gripping series from DreamWorks Television and executive producer Steven Spielberg. Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton, Drew Roy, Maxim Knight and Connor Jessup also star. In the third season of Falling Skies, Gloria Reuben is set to guest-star in a multiple-episode arc as Marina Perlata, an aide to Wyle’s Tom Mason. Graham Patrick Martin returns as Rusty Beck, a homeless teen and material witness taken in by Captain Raydor, and Robert Gossett guest-stars as Assistant Chief Russell Taylor. This season, Nadine Velazquez joins the ensemble as Deputy District Attorney Emma Rios. Major Crimes focuses on how the American justice system approaches the art of the deal as law enforcement officers and prosecutors work together to score a conviction. The series is produced by The Shephard/Robin Company and Walking Entropy, Inc., in association with Warner Bros. Television. James Duff, Greer Shephard, Rick Wallace and Michael M. Robin serve as executive producers.

King & Maxwell – New Series – Premiere: Monday, June 10, at 10 p.m. (ET/PT)

This brand new private-eye drama features Jon Tenney and Rebecca Romijn as bestselling author David Baldacci‘s popular characters Sean King and Michelle Maxwell. These two aren’t your typical private investigators. Both are former Secret Service agents, and their unique skills – not to mention their razor-sharp chemistry – give them a leg up on conventional law enforcement. Maxwell is a former Olympic athlete who uses her brains, beauty and Beltway connections to solve cases. King’s career in the Secret Service ended when the presidential candidate he was assigned to protect was assassinated, sending him on a downward spiral. Today, King has added a law degree to his arsenal of skills, allowing him to navigate the system in ways a typical private investigator never could. Along the way, King and Maxwell clash over everything, from her garbage-strewn car to his love of wine over beer. King & Maxwell also stars Michael O’Keefe and Chris Butler as F.B.I. Special Agents Rigby and Carter, who clash with King and Maxwell over their less-than-legal methods. This series is being produced by CBS Television Studios. Rizzoli & Isles – Season 4 – Premiere: Tuesday, June 18, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)

Perception – Season 2 – Premiere: Tuesday, June 18, at 10 p.m. (ET/PT)

This fascinating series features one of the most unique crime solvers on television, an eccentric neuroscience professor who is recruited by the FBI to help solve complex cases. Emmy® and Screen Actors Guild Award® winner Eric McCormack stars as Dr. Daniel Pierce, who possesses an intimate knowledge of human behavior and a masterful understanding of the way the mind works. Although Pierce’s mind may be brilliant, it’s also damaged as he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. Rachael Leigh Cook co-stars as FBI agent Kate Moretti, Pierce’s former student who has recruited Pierce to consult on cases. Also starring are Arjay Smith, Kelly Rowan and LeVar Burton. In addition, season two will feature special guest star Scott Wolf (Party of Five, V, Everwood) as Donnie, Kate’s soon-to-be ex-husband. Franklin & Bash – Season 3 – Premiere: Wednesday, July 24, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)

This buddy lawyer series stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer as two young, fly-by-the-seat-of-their-pants street lawyers who cause a seismic culture clash when they join a legendary, button-down law firm. This season, Heather Locklear joins the Franklin & Bash cast as Rachel King, a beautiful and brilliant trial lawyer and the firm’s newest partner. Malcolm McDowell returns as Renaissance man Stanton Infeld, the brilliant and eccentrically spontaneous patriarch of the law firm. Also starring are Reed Diamond, Dana Davis and Kumail Nanjiani. Franklin & Bash is produced by Four Sycamore Productions, Left Coast Productions and FanFare Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television. December 2012 Cable Ratings Guide

I'm back with another monthly look at the cable TV landscape! As always, I'll note that I mostly traffic in adults 18-49 ratings below. (That's always what I mean by "demo.") However, these should be taken with some grain of salt. I use A18-49 ratings because of availability and because they're a reasonable way of making comparisons across networks, but be advised that it is not necessarily the be-all-end-all number it is on broadcast. Not all of these networks target that demographic specifically. For the regular readers, shows that just began a season in this edition are in blue.

December was pretty slow, mostly just wrapping up a few stray fall seasons, so this is a relatively light edition. Lots of new stuff to come next month! Please let me know if there are any shows of interest that I'm missing out on!

Monday Night Football (ESPN): As the NFL season winds down, so do the NFL ratings, and ESPN's Monday Night Football was no exception. The MNF average also took a hit from having to air its last game on Saturday (since what would've been its final Monday was Christmas Eve). So it ended up with a 5.09 average, which was actually behind The Walking Dead in the cable supremacy race. That average was down 5% from last year.

American Horror Story: After a sizzling start to the American Horror Story season, it's ended up settling at a level well below last season down the stretch, including a pretty mediocre 1.2 demo in its return from hiatus on January 2. Its 1.46 average through ten episodes is down 9% from last year's first ten.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: It's Always Sunny really struggled in its last few weeks, dropping to a 0.6 demo in late November and then to a 0.5 for the December 13 season finale. That left the season average at a 0.68, down 33% from last year.

The League: The League also struggled down the stretch of the season, posting a few 0.4 demos in its last few episodes. It averaged a 0.53 demo in its 10:30 airings, down by 21% from last year.

Jersey Shore (MTV): The crumbling of Jersey Shore continued down the stretch of its final season, as it managed just a 1.3, 1.3 and 1.2 in the three weeks leading into the finale before rallying to a still underwhelming 1.8 for the series finale. It left the final season as a whole at sixty percent below the year-ago season with just a 1.57 average. Kudos to MTV on anticipating this and ending the show before things got really ugly.

Thursday Night Football (NFL Network): The longer run of Thursday Night Football appeared to pay off in a big way early in the season, when breaking a 3.0 every week appeared realistic. But a low-2's level was more typical down the stretch, and the season ended up with a 2.61 demo average, up by just 5% year-to-year.

Dexter (Showtime): Dexter finished its season on a really good note, nearing a season high for its penultimate episode on December 9 (1.27 demo) before hitting the high note on finale night (1.37). The finale was up nearly 40% from last year, and the season as a whole was up 23% (averaging a 1.13 overall).

Homeland (Showtime): Homeland also took off down the stretch, hitting its first 1.0 demo on December 2 and maintaining it the next week in the penultimate episode. With many threads wrapped up in the penultimate week, I guess a few people bailed for the finale, as it came down a hair (to 0.93), but it was still a sensational season for the Emmy winner. It averaged a 0.83 demo, up by 78% from season one!

WWE Smackdown! (Syfy): 0.7's and 0.8's have remained the norm for Smackdown! on Friday, though in its special Tuesday airing on USA Network on December 18 it spiked to a 1.2. Overall, Smackdown! is down about 18% from its fall 18-49 ratings.

Haven (Syfy): The scheduling was messed up somewhat for Haven when Syfy yanked one of its episodes due to the shootings in Newtown. So through 11 episodes, it's averaging a 0.44 demo, down about 16% from last year (nearly the same amount as its Smackdown! lead-in). The season's last two episodes will air on Thursday, January 17, and it's returning for season four.

Wedding Band (TBS): TBS' hour-long Saturday night show has averaged a 0.57 demo through seven episodes, and the ratings have bounced around quite a bit. I'm assuming this is because it's had a variety of different lead-ins, and it does best when aired after The Big Bang Theory. Either way, I'm sticking with my opinion on the show from the beginning, which is that the way TBS scheduled it suggests they don't like it enough to bring it back.

Rizzoli & Isles (TNT): In the end, the five episodes of Rizzoli & Isles at the end of 2012 consistently hovered right around a 0.8 demo. They averaged a 0.79, down by 16% from the five-episode run at the end of 2011.

Leverage (TNT): Leverage also had a five-episode run at the end of the year, and we eventually learned they would be the show's last five episodes. But Leverage went out on an OK note. After getting pretty ugly 0.5's in its first three weeks, it grew to a 0.6 on December 18 and then a 0.7 for the series finale on Christmas evening. The five episodes averaged a 0.62, down by 17% from last year's winter run.

Hot in Cleveland (TV Land): The return of Hot in Cleveland looked pretty solid by that show's recent standards, pulling in 1.7 million viewers and a 0.39 demo, numbers that were ahead of last year's averages. But as things have settled down, 0.3 or lower has become the new normal for Hot in Cleveland. Through six episodes, it's averaging just a 0.30, down by 19% on last year's first six.

Happily Divorced (TV Land): Happily Divorced also had a decent start before settling down at a much lower level, in this case right around a 0.25. It's averaging a 0.26 through six episodes, which is down by 15% year-to-year.

WWE Raw (USA): The holidays weren't that good to USA's wrestling franchise, as the show averaged just a 1.21 demo in December. That's down nearly a quarter from where it was at this time a year ago.

Burn Notice (USA): Long-running Burn Notice was actually one of USA's more stable returning shows last summer, and that trend continued into the fall episodes. It was right in the 1.0 vicinity almost every week, and the full average ended up at a 1.02 demo. That was just 3% below the regular season run for Burn Notice last year.

Royal Pains (USA): USA made a smart move in airing Royal Pains almost entirely in the summer last season. The only regular season airing was the two-hour wedding special, which averaged a 0.8 demo on December 16. If that's indicative of what a regular season run would've gotten, good decision, because Royal Pains consistently got a 1.0 or a little better during the summer.

Scene Of the Week - December 30, 2012

Week 4! Not a lot TV going on, but still, these are my picks:

1. Show: Leverage

Episode: The Long Goodbye Job
Date: December 25, 2012
Actors: Main Cast
The Scenes: The last scenes of the show. It’s hard to say goodbye to the shows that you’ve watched for years and have grown to really like, but it’s a bit easier when the series gets a very satisfying, fitting end with everyone getting their happy ending, moving on. It’s definitely the case here. I didn’t JUST like the entire episode, but these last scenes are something quite special. Goodbye from Nate and Sophie, the proposal, big win for the team and the trio expanding their activity are just great TV. As much as we’ll probably miss them, for now, I’m truly glad for all we’ve got to see. Brilliant and such a fun series, if you haven’t watched it, you can start right now.

2. Show: Doctor Who

Episode: The Snowmen
Date: December 25, 2012
Actors: Math Smith, Jenna Louise Coleman
The Scene: Doctor and Clara in the TARDIS for the first time. I have to start from saying I REALLY enjoyed the episode, definitely liked it much more than the one last year. Also, Clara already managed to make a great impression on me and there’s already a mystery that I can’t wait to see being uncovered. It was hard to choose just one scene, but I went with this one, because, like the Doctor said, this is one of these moments we’re going to remember. The moment, when Doctor chooses his next companion and gives her the key to his TARDIS (that was quick, BTW!). And I love how he says, he never really knows why or how he does it, he only knows WHO. And Harriet was right back in season 4, when she told Jack “The Doctor chooses his companion well”. He most certainly does. They’re always quite extraordinary and I can’t wait to see more of Clara and her, already great, dynamics with the Doctor. Plus, the ending of this scene was completely unexpected!
