‘We can be heroes’

In the 70’s, Gloria Steinman fought for women’s rights and on TV we had female heroines. The main shows were Charlie’s Angel’s, Wonder Woman and later Bionic Woman. They were known more for their hair flicking, skimpy outfits and twirls but at least it was a start.

In the 80’s it was more about slick hair styles, women wearing power suits and shoulder pads. It was the years of soap opera drama’s where being a strong woman meant you were a bitch rather than the heroine. The guys, however, could do anything with a car, duct tape, or a pocket knife. A show that was none of the above was Cagney and Lacey who made sure that females could chase down bad guys and have their own lives as well.

In the 90’s TV finally realized they were missing out on the main audience. The world cried out for a Hero and she answered. An extremely successful spin-off from Hercules the Legendary Journeys, Xena Warrior Princess (played by Lucy Lawless) hit our TV screens. She was dressed to please the male viewers but her attitude and power left men quivering at her boots. With her trusty sidekick Gabrielle, they roamed the countryside helping those in need while Xena tried to atone for her murderous past. Xena was a bad girl trying to do good in the world. With more emphasis put on the female leads, speculation around the nature of her and Gabrielle’s relationship caused quite a stir. It created subtext and fanfiction in the thousands. Two musicals episodes even fit well into the fantasy world created by Rob Tapert. My favorite being the Bitter Suite when both Xena and Gabrielle sing out their hatred for each other but ultimately makeup in the end. It was a close bond, confirmed as soulmates in the series finale and lovers only after the series ended. It ran for 6 seasons and still has a very loyal fan base today. Last year a reboot was announced which has fans split as it looks like the original cast will not be part of the show.

Within a few years, two other shows with female leads hit our screens. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was taken from a rather cheesy movie by Joss Whedon that gained cult status. And from producer Aaron Spelling (who seems to like the combination of three women together since his Charlie’s Angels days) came Charmed.

Buffy, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, was about a teenage girl in high school being the chosen one of her generation to slay the vampires. Buffy’s clever dialogue and witty one-liners made it an instant hit. It gave young girls someone to look up to with Buffy herself struggling with everyday life, making it relatable as well as mystical. It's 7 season run gave us heartbreak and laughter and even one musical episode.

Charmed appeared several years later. The story of three sisters hitting their thirty something’s and discovering they are witches. In fact, the most powerful of their generation. The power of three became a hit, once more giving us strong relatable women on our screens. The three, Prue, Piper and Phoebe were played by Shannon Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, and Alyssa Milano. We followed their lives, loves, career changes, and the losing of love ones. When Doherty’s character Prue was killed at the end of season 3 another sister was discovered, Paige, played by Rose McGown. Charmed came to end in 2006 after an impressive 8 seasons.

Also at this time The Star Trek universe even gave us a female Captain. Captain Janeway (played by Kate Mulgrew) took her crew through the perils in the Delta Quadrant on the Voyager, using her wits more than her lasers. Running for an impressive 7 seasons she did as promised and got her crew home.

When these shows ended, nothing else seemed to last as long. Despite a few other show’s trying to hit the mark, nothing had success beyond one or two seasons. I know there were a few great shows but they didn’t seem to be given the chance to shine. Where were all the female heroines?
What appeared to be happening was reality shows were at an all-time high, making the star’s instant celebrities. The internet and social media were also exploding. The sad fact was young girls were looking up to such individuals with terrify consequences. There was a generation with no one to look up or aspire to on their screens.

Two shows caught my eye late 2010 and thankfully lasted more than a single season.
Rizzoli and Isles on TNT and Lost Girl, on Showtime and Syfy.

Rizzoli and Isles, based on the highly successfully book series by Tess Gerritsen. Jane Rizzoli was a tough as nails police detective (played by Angie Harmon) and Dr Maura Isles the chief medical Examiner (played by Sasha Alexander) solved crimes in Boston. Their personal lives often crossed over into the professional making it unique. The chemistry between the leads was undeniable making it the best ‘Womance’ on TV and again a hit among fan fiction writers. These were older women with successful careers giving us something to aspire to. It became hugely successful and ran for seven seasons. But despite still being the networks highest rated show, the network’s change of direction choose to cancel.

Lost Girl took us back to a world of fantasy. It introduced us to the Fae, mystical creatures who walk among us and are either aligned to the dark or the light. However, when a succubus, (a creature who feeds off chi) is discovered and who is unaligned, their world is shaken up. Bo (played by Anna Silk) soon decides not to pick a side but fights for those who need it, along with her human best friend Kenzi. Certainly using sex as a weapon is probably not something to look up to, but Bo certainly was entertaining. You find yourself looking beyond that. Bo's willingness to fight, and not being afraid to take a stand is where this character shone. Sadly, her fight ended after five seasons.

While superheroes were doing well at the box office the one and only female character who made the crossover is Agent Carter (played by Hayley Atwell) from the first Captain America movie. She was Steve Roger’s love interest but it was on TV where her story developed. Set in a time when women after the war were considered nothing more than the housewife, Peggy Carter showed her struggles in a man’s world and proved the best man for the job was, in fact, a woman. It ended after two seasons’ leaving viewers wondering how she created the agency know as S.H.I.E.L.D and hoping we see her in some form on our screens again.

In 2015 I heard we finally were getting a female Superhero. It only had taken us 40 years since Wonder Woman was on our screens.

Supergirl was coming, created by the team who brought us Arrow and The Flash, the show was heading to CBS. It was no surprise Greg Berlanti, Executive producer, looked to his Glee alumni and cast Melissa Benoist as the lead. Her sunny personality fits perfectly for the role and so Supergirl and Kara Danvers were created.
After watching the pilot I had a feeling this could be a great show for young women and girls to look up to again. Another addition which I believe helped the series popularity was the creating of an adoptive sister for Kara, Alex Danvers (played by Chyler Leigh). The sisters’ bond soon became the heart and core of the show. Pictures were seen of girls visiting the set in costumes and dressing up as superheroes rather than princesses. Yes, girls can be strong. Supergirl had sent her message out there but, with an uncertain future as the season ended, a lot of people wondered if it would go the same was as so many other shows. Thankfully it wasn’t the case and the move to the CW was welcome. My only criticism is while it’s nice to have friends, they need to remember she is Supergirl, the most powerful woman on the planet.

When Supergirl aired, another female heroine was hitting our screens. Jessica Jones was coming to Netflix, who had previous success with Daredevil series. Naturally, I gathered this would follow in the same dark tone. To my surprise, I couldn’t believe the statements I kept reading, ‘was there room on TV for two female heroines?’

Jessica Jones (played by Kristen Ritter) was an anti-heroine, more at home with her bottle of whiskey than helping. Jessica herself was a victim and much of the series focuses on her struggle against her nemesis. Unfortunately, other people getting caught in the crossfire forces Jessica to use her powers to help.

Speaking of Anti-Heroines, who are as engaging as they are sarcastic, another came on screen last year. Based on the comic by Beau Smith. Created by Emily Andra’s known for her work on Lost Girl, Wynonna Earp (played by Melanie Scrofano) the great, great granddaughter of Wyatt Earp (yes we all know him) returns to her hometown of Purgatory and must send demons, who keep rising because of an old family curse, back to hell. Her whiskey and her sarcasm aren’t her only weapons, Wyatt’s old Gun Peacemaker is the only thing that can send them back. It’s fun in a B-Movie kind of style and will return this year for its second season.

Television has seen a shift recently but the hatred and outpouring towards women in lead roles both on the small and large screen still amazes me. I often look at the calendar to remind myself what century I am in. What would we do without strong female characters? True, it can be said we have a lot more on screen in such shows as Once Upon a time, The 100, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Scandal, and Orange is the new Black to name a few. However, there are still shows out there with strong females that still, tend to show more of the flesh rather than the action. Another factor is female characters tend to be the most expendable. Last year it became a sad time when female characters, most of which were playing LGBT characters, were being killed off at an alarming rate.

In a world, that has women marching to be heard and movies that predominantly feature male leads, Television networks seem to be realizing there is an audience is out there. Women need their hero’s too, maybe now more than ever. Don’t make us just the love interest or the mother, we are so much more. In the words of the late David Bowie, we can be Hero’s

Scene Of The Week - September 11, 2016 + POLL

A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in past seven days on TV.

CHESAPEAKE SHORES, "We're Not Losing a Son...", September 4, 2016, Actors: Treat Williams and more, The Scene: The call comes in that Kevin and his unit are missing
Aimee Hicks: This was heartbreaking to have the family go from a moment of enjoyment to complete and utter fear. Someone they love, their flesh and blood, was missing in a hostile land. That feeling of helplessness befalls far too many American families of our brave men and women in uniform. The switch from how this scene started, as a beautiful family dinner, to the stark news about Kevin was abrupt and tense. Treat Williams perfectly guided the scene as Mick took the call and had to break the news to his family. They all knew something was going on, but you could see how hard it was for Mick to convey the news. The entire cast perfectly captured the horrifying reality of this situation. Every member of the O’Brien clan at that table had an instant look of terror consume their faces. Kevin’s fate is still unknown, but whatever happens, it’s obvious that the O’Brien family will be sticking it out together. What made this scene stand out amongst all the other phenomenal scenes was the raw reality of this moment. This happens in American homes all the time and I applaud the show for giving a voice to those families. Their sacrifice can’t be forgotten any more than the sacrifice of those who wear the uniform.

DARK MATTER, "Wish I'd Spaced You When I Had The Chance", September 9, 2016, Actors: Anthony Lemke, Jodelle Ferland, The Scene: Three convinces Five to leave him behind
Aimee Hicks: Three says mean things to try and get Five to leave him behind. This was perhaps the most poignant scene of Dark Matter all season. Its basis was in raw humanity and sacrifice making it tug at the heartstrings of viewers. Anthony Lemke and Jodelle Ferland delivered intense performances as their characters fought for survival and fought to save each other. Three risked a lot to go after Five and he did so without regret. He was responsible for her on that trip and he couldn’t lose her. Not just because of his responsibility, but because he secretly considers her a friend. He took a bullet in order to save her and despite his injury, he knew they weren’t out of danger yet. Once they were in the woods he knew that he wasn’t going to make it. At that moment he has to accept his fate, but he refused to accept Five succumbing to the same fate. When she refused to leave him he felt his only choice was to break her heart. In his mind, he believed that if he broke her heart she’d be less burdened by his ultimate fate, and he was hoping that if he made her hate him enough she’d just leave him. More than anything he just wanted to make sure she was safe. His eyes said that he hated saying what he was saying, he didn’t mean any of it, but he was doing what he had to in order to protect someone he cares about. Luckily, Five is smart and she saw through his act. The most touching moment was when Three gave up the act and gently reached out to touch her hand as he begged her to go. The contrast of his big bloody hand over her small clean hand was powerful. While she was ultimately convinced to leave him behind she didn’t abandon him. She ran off and formulated a plan to get him help. This scene was raw and full of intense emotion. That makes this my favorite scene of the two-hour event from this week. There were a lot of phenomenal scenes, but that scene definitely stood out because of phenomenal acting by Ferland and Lemke. Bravo to both of them for their incredible performances.

MISTRESSES, "The Show Must Go On", September 6, 2016, Actors: Jes Macallan, Brett Tucker
The Scene: Joss and Harry get married
Klutzy girl: Joss and Harry get married on the beach. The beach has played an important part in their relationship so it was absolutely perfect. Their vows were also sweet.

MR. ROBOT, "eps2.8_h1dden-pr0cess.axx", September 7, 2016, Actors: Michael Cristofer, Bruce Altman, The Scene: Phillip Price explains to Terry Colby why he is who he is
Kollin Lore: Cristofer continues to steal every scene he is in as the CEO of E-corp, Phillip Price. In this scene he delivers a monologue about his utmost desire to be the most powerful man in every room he steps in and how that is what motivates him everyday. This monologue was delivered in such a spine chillingly, sinister way, and the camera work, starting as a long shot before slowly zooming in on him, made this scene that much more memorable. Cristofer has inhibited a character that really does command your attention and he has definitely become someone that you can't help but fear.

POLDARK, "Episode 1", September 4, 2016, Actors: Heida Reed, Kyle Soller, The Scene: Francis says goodbye to Elizabeth
Justyna K: I'm really glad I caught up with the show as it's such an interesting story and the cast & crew are doing an excellent work with both characters and their world. It was a great premiere and I couldn't quite decide on one scene to highlight. However, Francis made the most surprising impression on me in the hour and his sad goodbye to Elizabeth left a memorable impact. It's no surprise that Francis hasn't been the show's best character, all his decisions and the people he's hurt are not something to be easily forgotten. It seems though that he finally hit the bottom and before the last scene of the episode, he was trying his best just to do the right thing, to reach out to Ross and make a difference. Francis and Elizabeth are not in a good place, they haven't been since forever I'd say, but in this quiet and emotional moment there's an unexpected connection between them. After all their fights, Francis admits what he truly thinks about Ross and how impossible it seems to see a world without him. He also wonders "what if" and says farewell to his wife. Elizabeth notices the difference in his behavior and goes after him, worried and wanting to stop him but can't find the words to change his mind... The scene is beautifully acted by both actors and set with the touching music in the background which makes it my choice for SOTW. Kudos!

RIZZOLI AND ISLES, "Ocean-Frank", September 5, 2016, Actors: Angie Harmon, Sasha Alexander
The Scene: Jane decides to go to Paris with Maura
Klutzy girl: Jane surprises Maura by deciding to go to Paris with her. It's fitting that the show ended this way and I'm so happy it did.
Donna Chidley: You couldn't have wished for a more fitting ending to the series.

SUITS, "The Hand That Feeds You", September 7, 2016, Actors: Patrick J. Adams, Gabriel Macht, Neal McDonough and more, The Scenes: Mike gets out of jail & Sean does an impression of Harvey to Mike
Justyna K: Recently I found myself re-watching some old episodes of the show. Which put this scene in an even more meaningful light. If you take a closer look at the show, it spent years building up to this storyline - Mike's fraud being revealed and him ending up in jail. I have to say, this season has been quite rocky for me, but I'm glad to see Mike getting free. After everything, it felt like a good time to start fresh. And now it seems, Mike gets a second chance to make things right and I can't wait to see what choice he will make and in which direction the show will go. Very much excited for the changes. And it was a very emotional, genuinely happy moment for all involved. Well done by all the actors and beautifully shot. Kudos!
Laura Markus: Sean does an impression of Harvey to Mike. I don't really know why this was my favourite scene of the week, other than it being amazingly funny in an episode I really didn't like. Good job, Neal McDonough. I laughed a lot.

THE LAST SHIP, "Resistance", September 4, 2016, Actors: Eric Dane, Bridget Regan and more, The Scene: The crew learns about the US being dissolved and gets new orders
Aimee Hicks: The crew learns about the US being dissolved and receives orders to turn over Chandler. The crew of the Nathan James has been through a lot together, but they have always remained loyal to their commander and their country. To realize that their country had fallen apart in their time away and that their commander was a wanted man was hard to accept. This scene stood out because it showed Chandler at his very best, standing up for his beliefs and rallying his team to launch an extremely risky mission in the name of freedom and liberty. He still believes in the strength of the US, but more importantly, he believes in his crew. While invading the country with a single ship seemed an impossible mission he was ready to give it a try in the name of the country he loves. I love that Sasha and Chandler explained it together with Sasha filling in how it happened and Chandler explaining how they were going to undo it. They always seem to be on the same page in these types of situations. Despite the entire episode being filled with many powerful moments, this one really stood out because it was a grand display of their resolve. Eric Dane and Bridget Regan perfectly volleyed the scene back and forth and the entire cast that was present in the scene were right on point. The team knows the odds aren’t in their favor, but they were ready to fight. It was a lovely scene that showed off all the things that make the crew of the Nathan James a well-oiled machine.

YOU'RE THE WORST, "Fix Me, Dummy", September 7, 2016, Actors: Aya Cash, Chris Geere, The Scene: Gretchen finally opens the mail
Luana Arturi: Aya Cash did an amazing job on this scene. You can just see in her face she has no idea how to handle the information and, given how fragile she's been lately, you feel for her since she'll have to do one of the hardest things ever.
Ki Arnould: She gets really sad news, on the brink of coming out of a depressive funk, and he's buoyant with good news about his career. It was the last scene of this week's episode and we're left wondering if she'll do the mature, painful thing and tell him...or bottle it up, which she has a tendency to do.

ZOO, "Clementine", September 6, 2016, Actors: Billy Burke, Nonso Anozie, The Scene: Mitch sacrifices himself
Kollin Lore: Mitch was a character that made us laugh and cheer throughout the series, as the heart, soul, and humor of the team, but here he also made viewers cry. Watching him sacrifice himself was heartbreaking and Billy Burke did an excellent job in conveying that raw emotion in his farewell to the team through Abraham.
Klutzy girl: Mitch sacrifices himself so his daughter can get the cure she needs. His goodbye to Abe and plea for him to leave hurt badly. Billy Burke was absolutely amazing during this scene.

Rizzoli and Isles - Ocean Frank- Review: Bon Voyage

For a season finale, you really could not have asked for better than this. No characters were killed off, put in mortal danger or paired off with some random guy to live happily ever after.
With an ending that catered to all fans, in my opinion, it certainly pulled at the heartstrings with the testimonials. The flashbacks as well were subtle as once again a lot of shows in the past have resorted to flashback alone in a finale.
In fact, the ending showed signs of new beginnings and was a refreshing change to a lot of shows who have gone more for the shock than the story. It also helped they had a season to prepare knowing it was coming to an end and not suddenly being cancelled with questions left unanswered.
While I feel this show still had some mileage in it I am pleased it has ended on high. It’s been a pleasure to review over the last few years and I would like to thank you for all your input and comments.

So for the last time let’s take a look at the episode

We open up in Maura’s Kitchen with Jane walking in like she owns the place. Maura tells her to be quiet as she is making what appears to be a gruesome looking montage of their memories. Well, most of the time together does involve a murder.
Maura states she is going to miss Jane and wonders how many more experiences they will have and as the phone rings it looks like one more as they answer for the last time ‘Rizzoli’ ‘Isles’ before the credits role.

Korsak greets them at the crime scene, a male handcuffed to a bed, weird sex game gone wrong or something else? It appears someone left in a hurry taking their belongings. The victim was married so they assume it was his wife. Speaking of speculating Jane asks Maura to guess at the murder weapon but the scope is too much and as you can image Jane makes a joke.

Frankie is outside talking with a neighbor who appears to know everything. Her son comes up looking uneasy (yes not hard to guess why and we haven’t even got through the detecting bit).

Jane goes to the dirty robber as her mom has a gift for her, just what she always wanted a leopard skin print suitcase. She accepts it as Angela is clearly struggling with her leaving.

In the BRIC Nina and Frankie are being all sweet until Kent and his camera discovers their secret regarding the engagement, he promises to delete the footage (I don’t think he will). Seems Kent is getting video testimonial’s for not only Korsak’s retirement party but it is also a farewell party for Maura and Jane. Nina offers to go first.

In the Morgue Maura has a matching suitcase to Janes, well almost, her suitcase is a tortoise print or as Jane still insists on calling them a turtle. Maura explains about the animal’s traits and how they reflect them, maybe Angela was onto something after all. About the case, Maura tells Jane the victim not only had his head dislocated (not chopped off but detached from his spine) it looks like he took a substantial blow and was placed on the bed.

I love the exchange as Jane leaves

Jane: “think you would have run out of crazy medical terms to say to me”
Maura:" would you have let the door hit you in the face as you entered"
Jane: “Course not”

Jane hams it up with the door as she leaves (have I mentioned I am going to miss these two).

Nina does her testimonial with Kent, this is where you need to start grabbing your tissues folks. I believe all the actors spoke from the heart about their time on the show.

Korsak announces due to all his holiday days accrued he is retiring at the end of today. Jane seems to realize it is all happening so fast. However, they still have a case to solve. No financial worries seem to be the cause of the victim’s death. Nina can’t find anything to pin point he was in trouble and no trace on the wife either. In fact, she has no license or credit cards. Nina is going to keep digging and Jane helps Korsak with some boxes.

At the Dirty Robbery Ron sneakily gets Angela to talk and films it as Kent told him she would not film her goodbye.

Nina tricks Jane after showing Angela how to skype so she can speak to her while away. I do wonder if Angie knew they were going to pop up as she seemed a little stunned.

Nina and Frankie did some more digging on the disappeared wife of the victim it seems Elaine Chan was married to two other guys, also the victim Robert paid money to a Second Pleasure enterprises. Nina is going to call when she gets an address. Jane still seems uncomfortable with Korsak packing.

In the morgue Maura can’t find certain things seems Kent has moved them which he apologizes for, it was a bit rude before she has even left on her leave of absence.
Jane enters and has a swift no for Kent when he asks her to do the video. He even calls her grumpy. Maura explains the back of the victim’s neck had linseed oil and beeswax on it (oh I know what hit him). Only DNA in the house was the victim and a female but no matches have been found. Jane gets the information that their lead is a strip club in Chinatown, people don't talk in them places it seems.
Jane undercover as a stripper? as Maura comments, they have done worse and an ad lib by Angie Harmon (she confirmed this while live tweeting during the finale and was surprised Jan Nash left it in) makes us all laugh

Kent does Korsak’s testimonial, yes you might need those tissues again.

At Second Pleasure they talk to the owner, after some persuading, Jane and Korsak learn the money the victim paid was a setup fee the owner had not seen the couple since they were married. You also learn they are not exactly going through the proper channels for citizenship.

Kent video’s Frankie and assures him he will delete the earlier footage (we can all see where this is going).

With the information from Second Pleasures they talk to the aunt of the wife and no surprise her name isn’t Elaine, Jane and Korsak both know she is lying when she says she has left the country to go back to China. She claims her husband held her niece captive and beat her. As they leave Jane spots her and gives chase soon catching her before she can get away.

Maura does her video and I for one did reach for the tissues at this point, Sasha Alexander had already got to me with a lovely thankyou video she posted for the fans online. The raw emotion’s come through in this scene and at the end as Maura says she is really sad, even Kent is holding back the tears. I am sure many fans let their own tears fall sharing in the sadness.

Frankie interviews the wife who is crying, Jane is watching from the other side of the glass in the interview room and goes to fill Korsak in, it seems the wife claims it was an accident and he beat her and held her captive. (with the fuzzy handcuffs)
Maura arrives and notes Korsak’s clean desk while Jane’s is still messy. Jane’s eyes fall on the action figure that was once Barry Frost’s. She wants Maura to distract her. Maura tells her the substance found on the back of the victim, Roberts, neck was from car wax (yes I called it). Same as the victim’s car, they deduce it could have been the car bumper but it's unlikely a small woman like her could have not only pushed him with enough force but also moved his body to the bed. They think she is protecting someone. Frankie comes in telling them she isn’t changing her story.
At this moment they give Frankie or as he is known now Frank Rizzoli Korsak’s old desk.

At the Dirty Robber Ron is helping Angela prepare for the party but it seems she has made an unfortunate mistake ordering a cake for a bachelorette party, not a bon voyage party. Angela says she is going to work magic with the frosting and later we see a palm tree with coconuts instead of ...well I am sure you can guess.

Jane brings in a dummy and tells Elaine she could not have lifted him, the hospital’s confirmed she had been brought in with injuries from beating and they also gave them a description of who brought her in, yes it was the neighbor’s son. Frankie brings him into the interview room and Jane leaves them to talk advising them, to tell the truth.

Jane solves a murder on her last day. As she goes to her desk she places the action figure in front of Frankie and she states he(Frost) would have been his partner. It’s a nice nod to the late actor who played such a loved character on the show.

Jane goes down to Maura’s office. She tells Maura that Elaine, really Way Chang, admitted the abuse and reports Maura got from the hospitals confirm that. Seems the neighbor across the street helped and they feel in love and they were going to run away together but her husband, Robert caught them and slipped hitting his head on the bumper. Though I am guessing the reason they covered it up was to avoid her being deported, it was a bit of a weak crime story. Well, really there was no crime at all except them covering up the accident. With only a few minutes’ left on her shift Jane wills her phone to ring as she wants one last call as wants to avoid the party they both know Mama Rizzoli is throwing for them. The shift ends and they both acknowledge it has come to an end. This was the perfect place for a flashback of some of their fun moments. Jane leaves to get ready for the party and Maura switches out the lights in the morgue.

Sasha Alexander has said she balled her eyes out after filming this scene.

Upstairs the tears aren’t over as Jane and Korsak hug goodbye but our spirits are lifted when Kent threatens Jane with doing her video via sock puppet.

At the party, complete with cake, the videos are playing and yes Kent forgot to delete Nina and Frankie’s moment. Frankie places the ring on Nina’s finger and they announce their engagement, I think this was a fitting ending for these two.
Jane’s video comes on leaving not a dry eye in the place, Jane looks around the robber and I love the wink she gives to Korsak and Maura looks back at her when Janes tells them she loves them.

However, it isn’t over, Maura is doing some last minute checks in her bedroom and Jane is laid on the bed. This is the first time since the pilot we have seen inside Maura’s bedroom and that was a different house. Maura doesn’t want Jane to take her to the airport as it will be too sad. As viewer’s braced themselves for what we were sure would be an emotional goodbye a surprise is in store.
Jane is using her holiday days and not starting the FBI for two months, she also has a ticket to Paris, courtesy of Maura’s air miles and is going with Maura. As they laugh about the fun they will have the screen goes black and we must bid farewell to the series.

I don’t think they could have picked a better ending for the series and even though I am sad it has ended it does leave it open for the future, maybe a TV movie or series reboot later down the line.

Rizzoli and Isles, Looking back at the series

The Rizzoli and Isles series follows cases investigated by Boston Homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and Chief Medical examiner Maura Isles.Janet Tamaro and Bill Haber developed the series based on the besting selling books by Tess Gerritsen.

Angie Harmon plays Jane Rizzoli and no stranger to playing a cop. Previous TV credits were Law and Order and Women’s Murder Club.

Dr. Maura Isles played by Sasha Alexander who was best known for N.C.I.S

7 season's and 105 episodes later it's sadly coming to an end.

Janet Tamaro was the showrunner, executive producer for season 1-4 and Jan Nash took over the helm in Season 5 to present.
Despite a slight drop off in ratings, the show is still as popular as when it first aired 6 years ago. Each year more episodes were being added to the series until seasons 5 and 6 were 18 episodes long. For a show that was just supposed to be a summer filler, it was the networks highest rated.
However, the powers that be seems to decide it wasn’t a fit for TNT’s upcoming program schedule and it was cancelled much to the anger of fans.

For US viewers TNT is currently showing a marathon airing every episode up until tonight’s finale.

So let’s go back and take a look at Rizzoli and Isles starting with Season 1 in the summer of 2010 and the characters.

Jane Rizzoli a tough Boston Homicide Detective who is called to a crime scene whose MO resembles a killer she recently put away at personal cost.
Maura Isles, who looks like a fashion model but seems slightly socially award. The brilliant Chief Medical Examiner. Who prefers working on the dead over the living.
Barry Frost (Lee Thompson Young) Jane’s new partner in Homicide who is very green not only in the lack of experience but he gets sick at crime scenes.
Vince Korsak(Bruce McGill) an old school cop, Jane’s former partner who is mad as he doesn’t know why Jane asked for a new one. We also learn he has a soft spot for animals.
Frankie Rizzoli (Jordan Bridges) Jane’s younger brother a beat cop who looks up to Jane despite the brother and sister teasing.
Angela Rizzoli (Lorraine Bracco) Jane’s mother and Frank Rizzoli Sr (Chazz Palminteri) Jane’s father. A typical blue collar Boston family.

Season 1 wasn’t split into two parts, just one run of 10 episodes’ The first episode ‘See One, do one, teach one’ was chilling making you realize this was not your run of a mill procedural drama. You also get to see Maura and Jane’s friendship is fairly new in the fact she hasn’t been to her house yet (a place in the future she spends a great deal of time). We meet Maura’s pet, Bass the tortoise and Jane gets her dog, both vanished in later seasons and we were left with a little explanation until recently.
Most significant is we meet Jane’s Nemesis, Charles Hoyt a serial killer who has an obsession with Jane. Two episodes feature him in the first season. With some shocks for Jane.
Maura, who we learn was adopted by a wealthy Boston family gets a shock of her own in this first season when a half-brother turns up on her autopsy table. She soon learns she is the child of a former Irish mob enforcer Paddy Doyle and was put up for adoption to keep her safe from his enemies.
In this season we get to know the characters, their backgrounds and each week they work together to solve a crime. The crimes were complex enough to hold your interest but what really shone through was the friendship between the two lead characters. Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander had a chemistry that shows through on screen and the ‘Womance’ had begun. There is also romance on the cards with Jane and Agent Dean who is tasked by the FBI in the Hoyt case, though their timing never seems right. By the last episode, Maura is pushed to the limit trying to save Jane’s brother’s life when they are held hostage at the BPD. Jane is held at gunpoint but shoots through herself in a gripping finale scene.

Rizzoli and Isles was a hit. I believe it was the number one cable show at the time.

Instead of sticking to the same formal things shifted slightly in Season 2.One thing that seemed noticeable during the season was it tended to bring in a lighter tone and more comedy. While we still had a few gritty crimes but the dark edge seemed to be gone. The cast, however, seemed more comfortable in their roles and with each other showing through on screen.
In ‘We don’t need another hero ‘(this started the trend of naming episodes after song titles) Janes gets another love interest in the form of old flame Casey, who helps her and Maura investigate the case with military connections.
Another big change was Frank Sr, Jane’s father had left Angela, also leaving a lot of debt. Maura comes to the rescue and Angela moves into the guest house in the new house Maura brought.
We get to meet Jane’s other brother, who was in prison, Tommy Rizzoli and Maura’s adoptive mother Constance Isles. In the episode ‘Sailor man’ Maura and Janes came up with the term LLBFF, Lifelong best friends forever. As Jane and Maura convince an old flame of Janes who has a keen interest in Maura they are in fact a couple, a fact some fans had been shipping (Rizzles) since the first season. It was also the first season they split in two and the mid-season finale ‘Remember Me’ had Jane and Maura locked in a prison with Charles Hoyt. As Hoyt is about to kill Maura, Jane mange’s to break free killing Hoyt. However, he will be the stuff of nightmares in the future and spurns another protege for Jane to deal with. My criticism of this story was Jane's birthday party, the poor woman had been through enough without that. It also came across a little silly after the drama.
Season 2 returned with two storylines that had their friendship at breaking point. Firstly, in ‘He Aint heavy, He’s my brother’ where Maura is ordered to keep information back concerning Jane’s brother Tommy. We see their first big fight, however, they soon make up. Giving us a scene that even had the author of the books commenting on the chemistry. (The term she used is eye sex. Yes, it’s a thing) between the lead characters and once again the internet was on fire about the nature of the relationship. Especially when Maura tells Janes she loves her over her brother Tommy. The finale ‘Burning down the house’ saw Maura’s adoptive mother back in town and she is injured saving Maura. Jane has a visitor of her own as Agent Dean is back. We meet Senior criminalist Susie Chang and Maura sets herself up as bait for the killer. Things turn sour though when Maura’s biological father, Paddy Doyle, comes back and Jane is forced to shot him. Maura is upset and you wonder if their friendship will ever be the same.

In Season 3 the girls are not speaking, Maura discovers more about her past in ‘What doesn’t kill you’ and Paddy is fighting for his life. Jane sends Agent Dean on his way after he used the information she gave him to get to Paddy. Maura and Jane aren’t speaking but when a case puts Maura’s life in danger it’s up to Janes to save her in turn their friendship is restored.
I know a lot of people said recently it moved away from the crime and more about the family’s drama but this started back towards the end of season 2 and season 3. It wasn’t about the crime of the week but the focus had shifted more on the characters and their lives which we have come to expect.
The focus was still mainly on the two leads and featured storylines that put them both in danger.
Maura tracks down her biological mother a Doctor Hope Martin and learns she has a half-sister Cailin but things don’t go as planned as Hope was lead to believe Maura was dead. Janes picks up a stalker and when she disappears they all must race to save her before he snaps. Maura learns Casey is back but after being injured he does not want to continue his relationship with Jane.
Jane becomes an Aunt but it seems Tommy might not have been the father as both he and her dad slept with the same woman.
Maura has a hint of romance after a guy is found alive on her autopsy table (a part of his anatomy rising gave it away) however it turns deadly in the mid-season finale ‘Melt my heart to stone’ when it's discovered he wants Maura as a trophy, not a girlfriend and Jane rushes to save her.
Season finale ‘No more drama in my life’ has the crew trying to save Frost and Tommy after a building collapses on them. And Maura must decide if she will donate her kidney to her half – sister Cailin.
Even though Maura and Hope’s relationship is still very strained.

Season 4 kicks off with ‘We are family ‘Maura is still recovering from surgery and Frankie gets his promotion at last to detective (though all he seemed to do was whine this season and got on my nerves). Casey returned much to Jane's surprise. Casey tells her his injuries weren’t as severe as first diagnosed and is still in the army and once again leaves, however, another old flame returns a former partner from the drug unit.
A fan favorite of the series was ‘A killer in High Heels’ were Maura becomes the suspect in a murder ending up in prison. Jane soon discovers the truth that she was set up and drugged.
More secrets are revealed as Paddy is put on trial and his past includes the murder of the lieutenant’s family. Maura also discovers her biological mother Dr. Hope Martin still had contact with him through the years. The mid- Season finale has Jane deciding on her future as Casey proposes and Maura has to deal with her paternal grandfather who is released from prison.
Season 4 Jane seems to act more out of character than the previous season allowing Casey to treat her with little or no respect angering fan’s making him the most disliked character.
Frank Rizzoli is also back and he delivers some bad news to the family. We also learn he wasn’t the loving father we first believed him to be back in season 1.
The finale was a little weak, Tommy seems to slip back into old habits and Jane reveals to Maura that she and Casey are breaking up along with the news she is pregnant.

Season 5 kicked off on a very solemn note, the death of Barry Frost, sadly the actor who played him Lee Thompson Young killed himself at the end of season 4.
Janes struggles to cope and throughout the season this is addressed. Maura meets a new man and this one does not seem to want to kill her.
Jane puts her life on the line twice first in ‘lost and found’ to save a young witness unfortunately losing the baby. Secondly in the mid – season finale leaving us on a cliffhanger as she jumps off a bridge to save someone much to the anger of her family and Maura. We also get to meet a new character in Nina Holiday (Idara Victor) a cop and tech wizard who works with Frankie in the Bric.
Maura’s romance doesn’t last either as she tells her boyfriend to choose his family over her. The mid-season finale was, in fact, more exciting than the season end and I felt the shift in the series as a new showrunner took over the helm bringing in new writers.

Season 6 and I started reviewing the season for Spoiler tv and I must admit the beginning was exciting and fresh and back to what I expected from Rizzoli and Isles, gone were the resident boyfriends. It introduced a new member to the medical examiner's office in the form of Kent Drake (Adam Sinclair). I still agree with Jane it sounds like a superhero name. However sadly for whatever reason, they saw fit to get rid of senior criminalist Chang who had become a much-loved character in the show. Her murder in the episode ‘misconduct ‘was the best episode of the season but it angered a lot of fans. With a predominantly female cast, many wondered if that was the reason. No surprise now we are left with three male and three female characters.
Another thing that was also noted was another shift, we already had one focusing on the personal rather than the crimes now it seemed we learned more about the other character’s lives. In fact, it had been slipping in more and more back in season 3, 4 and 5. Though the main focus should still be the leads. It was also noticed they seemed to have less screen time together and rumors ran rife over the internet of a falling out between the leads.
For me, I still saw the chemistry onscreen the friendship and the story focus was them solving cases while all the family trauma and life went on around them. Though some storylines did not follow what we had previously learned and again this angered fans.
What season 6 did give us was one for the most gripping storylines in awhile with Jane being targeted by someone once again. This starts with the burning down of her apartment and continues into the next season.
The mid-season finale ‘5:26’ has Jane fearing for those she loves and ends with Maura getting kidnapped.

When it returns the hunt for Maura is on. Jane and Korsak come to her rescue but the man who kidnapped her might not be the one in charge. The end of season 6 ‘A shot I the dark’ has the real perpetrator, Alice Sands (Annabeth Gish) uncovered and Jane on the hunt. However, Jane is unable to catch her and Alice fires shots at Korsak’s wedding and we are left wondering who was hit.

This brings us to a final season and it started with the hunt for Alice Sands, Jane seems so tired as we start you wonder if she has had enough. When she goes undercover in the prison it seems Angela is tired of her daughter always being in danger and tries to make Jane rethink her career. Maura is also at a crossroads when after banging her head after the disturbance at the wedding she has to have surgery. Soon she is back to her old self but time spent at Hope’s clinics helps her realize the living aren’t as scary to work on. Also, she tests her skills as a writer.
It also marked the 100th episode which was directed by Angie Harmon and we discover Maura was married in the episode directed by Sasha Alexander.

With only 13 episodes we have no mid-season finale and as tonight’s episode draws this series to a close I wonder where it will lead.

Rizzoli and Isles, a show with its mix of crime and family drama is the type of show you watch with your girlfriends on a Friday night. It was different at the time giving us two strong female leads both over 30 and a friendship that stood all the tests thrown at it held our attention every week.
Both Characters have evolved over the series and credit goes to the actresses who play them, showing the multiple layers of each character.

Because of the series I have had the chance to review and work for Spoiler TV, met Tess Gerritsen several times and interview Tina Huang.
I have also made friends in the Rizzoli and Isles fandom and am thankful for their support of my reviews.

Tomorrow I will review the finale no doubt with a tear in my eye but tonight I will tweet with my fellow Rizzoli and Isles fans and raise a glass to a series I am going to miss

Rizzoli and Isles - Stiffed & Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow- Reviews: Tying up loose ends

It’s the beginning of the end for Rizzoli and Isles and am sure the last few episodes we will have our goodbyes. In this episode, Jane announces her news that she is leaving BPD. We also get a surprise return from Tommy Rizzoli who is back after what will come as no surprise, Lydia has gone off with another guy. It’s one of the few story’s that makes sense given the past history. Maura feels conflicted and I predict the next announcement will be a new Medical Examiner. She is also struggling with Jane leaving.
The crime this week was macabre but the killer was caught all too quickly with a rush of explanation at the end leaving a lot of viewer’s confused as to how and why.
It was a good episode, with some wonderful family scene’s and between the two leads that reminded me once again that it’s coming to end all too quickly with only two more episodes left to go.

This one starts with a funeral and when the pallbearer’s accidentally drop the coffin they realize Grandma has some unexpected company for the afterlife. Another body is inside… a very naked body!

Jane announces her news to Angela who is less than pleased, yes you can never win with Mother’s. Eventually, though she says she is happy for Jane.
Jane and Maura go off to the cemetery and start looking into a disturbing case where more victims seem to have been embalmed and now are being located in other coffins attached to the funeral directors. When one of the directors turns up dead the finger points to the sister but she is soon cleared as the technique used was the dead directors. Clearly, whoever was murdering the victims he was covering up for killed him as well. Seems the killer threatened his sister, Korsak and Jane soon track him down as he was killing models he photographed.

Tommy Rizzoli returns in this episode, remember Jane’s jailbird brother who seemed to clean up his act after he had a child. We all remember Lydia, mother of his child, was a bit flakey and no surprise she has run off with another guy leaving Tommy and his son TJ. I loved the scene with all three Rizzoli’s eating pizza and chatting, seems Tommy is going to take over the lease for Jane’s place.

Frankie is also looking at his future and a night on the roof looking at the stars gives him the perfect
setting to propose to Nina who eagerly accepts.

The one thing that bugged me and was bothering Jane as well was Maura’s lack reaction to her leaving, Maura is, in fact, struggling with losing her best friend but knows it’s a good thing for Jane. She also is struggling with working on the living when a baby at Hope’s clinic has a very bleak outlook but soon she improves much to Maura’s surprise.

At the end the girls go for a walk and chat on the bench, Maura needs science to explain but as Jane comments somethings just can’t be explained. Jane tells her she likes to play what if but they both explain the good things that have come out of something bad. Everything happens for a reason so they say. It was a lovely scene and why we are going to miss seeing their friendship on screen, which has made the show such a hit among viewers.

I can't believe we are on the penultimate episode of the show but after last week’s episode, this one seemed a bit misplaced. A murder from over 40 years ago comes back to haunt Korsak and Jane is preparing to leave when a surprise visitor from Washington gives her something else to think about.
Maura hears back from her editor and with a response that is less than favorable she wonders if to continue but as always Jane is on hand with wine and words of encouragement.

We start in 1975 and a group of kids playing hide and seek but the game turns gruesome when one is found murdered.

Back in present day Boston Jane is getting cooking lessons from Angela and Maura is making Jane a to do list but both soon start getting upset and Jane runs for the wine instead of the tissues. I feel fans will be doing the same next week.

The crime scene this week is an elderly man who seems to have been suffocated, Korsak knows him as the father of the girl killed in the 1975 case. Korsak was dating the younger sister at the time and knew the family, he asked Maura a few years ago to look into the case.

Soon it becomes apparent that as the kid's party where the murder happened was at a wealthy family’s house things have been covered up including who killed her. But new evidence techniques and some sneaky detective work from Jane gets them all the evidence they need.

Jane while trying to come to terms with leaving her family has a visitor in the form of Agent Davis. Who you will remember we met when she was an instructor at the FBI. Seems Jane and he went out for drinks and now Jane is moving to Washington he wonders if they could be a lot more. This whole storyline annoyed me for the following reasons …. Why have they left it to the last episode if they are going to introduce a potential love interest. Call me old fashioned but Jane jumping into to bed with him was just so out of character for her considering how her past relationships were established. Can’t we just have Jane going off and a hint of the romance rather than shoving it at us because of course, Jane needs a man to be happy in the future., it’s not 1975 but 2016.

Speaking of relationships and one that does make sense Frankie and Nina have yet to announce their engagement but Frankie wants to wait until she has a ring and him asking for his grandmother’s earrings have Angela thinking an announcement may be made soon.

Maura on hearing from her editor her story is a bit flat and needs some work takes Jane advice and announces she is getting away from it all and going to Paris for a month to write, I feel this will happen as Jane leaves.

Korsak, we learn joined the police because of what happened in 1975 and it’s only fitting he solves the case as he announces his retirement.
I did enjoy the cold case though nothing new story wise, it’s a tale told many times over, money covers up a murder. It was, however, a nice touch to bring Korsak’s story full circle. Apart from some amusing scene’s with Jane and Maura the rest of the episode left me disappointed.
I hope for more from the finale and that it captures what I love most about the show.

Scene Of The Week - August 28, 2016 + POLL

A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in past seven days on TV.

CHESAPEAKE SHORES, "Home to Roost, Part One", August 21, 2016, Actors: Meghan Ory and more, The Scene: Abby is served with custody papers by Wes
Aimee Hicks: Being back in Chesapeake Shores has reignited Abby’s family values. After living the wild New York lifestyle and having skewed priorities with put her career first and cost her time with her daughters and led to her divorce, she’s now realizing that she needs to change things in her life. She’s also in the early stages of rekindling a relationship with Trace, her first love. She has an opportunity to move to a lower key office closer to her family and she’s considering it. Things are starting to come together in Abby’s life then Wes sweeps in and shatters her life with what appeared to be custody papers. The way she frantically pounded on Wes’ car as he drove off with the girls made it abundantly clear that she knew what was in that envelope that he gave her. Seeing her collapse to the ground in shock and fear more or less confirmed the contents of the document. She got her family back only to potentially lose her daughters. The acting done by Meghan Ory in this scene was heartbreaking. She perfectly captured Abby’s fear and the anguish she exuded was palpable. With Abby in obvious distress her family put everything aside and ran to be with her. No matter what else is going on in their lives when one of their own is in trouble the O’Brien family rallies around them. The whole cast was perfect as they rallied around Ory. Each actor perfectly captured their character’s personality and relationship with Ory’s character and they each perfectly supported Ory’s performance. She was the center of the scene and had to be extremely vulnerable and her fellow cast members were phenomenal in protecting her, allowing her to deliver a deeply emotional performance. A heartbreaking scene which beautifully captured the theme of the series, which is that no matter what else is going on family always comes first. For anyone who doesn’t know about this show (it’s unfortunately not one we cover on this site) it airs on Hallmark on Sunday nights at 9/8C. I can’t recommend this show highly enough. It stars Meghan Ory, Jesse Metcalfe, Treat Williams, Diane Ladd, Barbara Niven, Emilie Ullerup, Laci J Mailey, and a whole other array of gifted performers. If you’re looking for a good family drama in the vein of Parenthood then definitely check this series out.

DARK MATTER, "Going Out Fighting", August 26, 2016, Actors: Melissa O’Neil, Jonas Chernick, The Scene: Two learns about her past as Rebecca
Aimee Hicks: Picking a single scene from this episode was incredibly difficult, but I had to go with this scene. Learning about Two’s past as Rebecca provided some poignant scenes for Melissa O’Neil to masterfully show off her vast acting range. She took Rebecca from a terrified childlike person to a dangerous killer. It was the moments Rebecca shared with Eric that had the most impact. We all knew that Rebecca had been exposed to some horrific things in her early days, but I doubt anyone could have imagined just how horrific that time was. She was tortured and abused in the most vial of ways. The fact that she morphed into Portia Lin upon her escape is no surprise. Dwarf Star Technologies made Portia Lin, but Eric Waver made Two. Dwarf Star Technologies taught Rebecca that natural born humans can be vial and awful beings that don’t deserve anything from her. Eric, on the other hand, taught her that not all humans are evil. He taught her compassion by showing her kindness and giving her basic human touch. He let her embrace him and he was gentle and kind with her. Given her childlike mentality he, while at first hesitant, returned her fearful embrace. Waver knew that she just needed someone to let her know things would be okay. Unfortunately, he was just one man low on the totem pole whom did what he could to comfort her, but he couldn’t get to safety. It was obvious when Two stormed back into his life that his inability to fully protect her still haunted him. Still, his compassion lived on within Rebecca and that transferred into Portia Lin who likely had to fiercely fight to suppress it. In the absence of the horrific memories of those early days the compassion Waver taught Rebecca was able to surface in Two and surpass some of the damage done to her. It was a beautiful relationship, but I wish it had been given more screen time to show the full evolution of these two characters and how they impacted each other. Even though Waver didn’t survive the episode I’m hopeful we’ll get more flashbacks with him one day. O’Neil and Jonas Chernick beautifully meshed to capture this complicated relationship. Whether Waver was like a father to Rebecca or a big brother, doesn’t really matter, what matters is he showed her love and compassion and the performers nailed the delivery of that. Because of the deep complexities of the scene and the incredible performances by O’Neil and Jonas this has to be the scene I highlight from this episode.

DEAD OF SUMMER, "Home Sweet Home", August 23, 2016, Actors: Elizabeth Mitchell, Elizabeth Lail
The Scene: Face off between Amy and Deb
Marko Pekic: The two Elizabeths had great chemistry in Once Upon A Time and they've finally exploited in this show. Also E. Lail knows how to work the axe.

KILLJOYS, "Johnny Be Good", August 26, 2016, Actors: Hannah John-Kamen, Aaron Ashmore, The Scene: Dutch and Johnny talk after she's captured
Justyna K: What a brilliant episode that was! With so many scenes worth mentioning. First of all, the ending. Even though I expected that things wouldn't end well for Pawter, the entire attack took me by surprise. Such a tragic moment, such a sudden death. Poor Johnny, after all they've been through, it's heartbreaking to see how they couldn't save anyone, not even Pawter herself. They took down the Wall, in another powerful scene, but at what cost? Pawter telling people to take down the Wall by running into it and then crying when she sees the consequences of her choice, was both painful and memorable view. But in the end, the scene I wanted to highlight the most is the honest conversation between Johnny and Dutch. After all the secrets and lies, it's exactly what they both needed and it only made their bond grow stronger. Both actors did a wonderful job as Dutch admits how she truly feels about Johnny, herself and their current situation. These two! It's been only two seasons and their friendship is already one of my favorites on TV. I loved the part where Dutch tells Johnny about her internal struggle and how he's always been the one who kept her demons hidden. Having each other's backs against all odds is something I greatly admire and I'm always happy to see on my shows. Dutch and Johnny are wonderful team and partners and I look forward to many more emotional, memorable and beautifully done moments between them. Kudos!

ROADIES, "The Corporate Gig", August 21, 2016, Actors: Luke Wilson, Carla Gugino
The Scene: Bill tells Shelli he's in love with her
Klutzy girl: Bill confesses to Shelli he's in love with her. I love these two together so much and I thought there was going to be more angst so I'm glad that's out in the open.

SUITS, "Shake the Trees", August 24, 2016, Actors: Gabriel Macht, Sarah Rafferty and more, The Scenes: Sean tells Harvey that Mike's deal is getting pulled & Donna puts Stu in his place
Laura Markus: Sean breaks the news to Harvey that Mike's deal is getting pulled. Suits's best scenes as of late have been with these two characters. These are powerhouse actors and the material they've gotten to work with has been pretty stellar. Some people knew right away that this deal for Mike had to be too good to be true. Others were just hoping that it could all work out. I, for one, didn't want the deal to work, as I would like to see how Harvey reacts to all of this even further. I got exactly what I wanted for and it was beautifully painful. These two characters have grown to become quite close, but with this news I suspect they will crash and burn in coming episodes. For now, however, it was so heartbreaking to see Sean have to deliver the news to Harvey. Both times he had sad news for him he had to instruct him to "sit down". Harvey's face at the end? It really says it all. Mike is just so important to him and now that he won't be able to get out of prison early - well, it won't be an easy thing for Harvey to deal with. Great job. Garbriel Macht is certainly getting my POTM nomination for this.

The SpoilerTV Favourite TV Series Competition 2016 - Day 10 - Leverage vs. The Americans & Suits vs. Rizzoli and Isles

Hey all,

Leverage, which has only made one previous appearance in the competition back in 2013, makes a return today, as the number one seed on the finished side, no less. I wouldn't have predicted that, but here we are. It faces The Americans today, FX's low-rated but critically-loved drama, which fell out in the first round in its debut last year. Suits then takes on Rizzoli and Isles, a battle that features two shows with solid-sized fanbases that aren't necessarily the most frequently vocal.

A reminder of the rules:

1) Two shows will go into battle in a poll, where after exactly 24 hours, the leading show will win the battle and will progress into the next round.
