In this day of technological advancements it seems as if the world is changing every day around us. There is always a new piece of technology hitting the market. If you think back to years past, the days of our grandparents and further, you can see all the things that have changed where technology and advancements are concerned.

Our grandparents went from the days of no television and just radios or they started with a boxed black and white television. Today we have flat screen TV’s that you can hang on the wall with pictures so real it makes you feel like you’re living the movie that you are watching.

Technology is advancing and there is nothing we can do about it but that is a good thing. Some people fear that technology will consume our lives and we will forget out the older and more traditional approaches to things.

One of those concerns is traditional books versus the new e-readers like the Nook and the Kindle. Some parents feel traditional books add value to the experience of reading a book. Some remember the excitement of going to pick their favorite book off the shelf at bedtime for their parents to read. It was exciting to grab a book from the shelf and say “here I want to read this one.”

Now with e-readers kids simply select a book they like and download. No pages to slip through. Now it just “let’s see what we can download tonight.” The question is, do you feel this diminishes the entire reading experience between parent and child? What impact if any do you feel this evolving technology will have on the publishing world? We’d like to know your thoughts on this subject.

Here are ten of the most common e-learning tools that we’ve come across in some of the articles that we’ve read.

“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.” Steve Jobs, Stanford University Commencement 2005

I think all of us have a moment in life when something that’s said really resonates with us. Maybe I’m abnormal but I know that I’ve had several. Mr. Jobs statement above resonated with me because it fit in quite neatly with what my own philosophy of life and learning SHOULD be. I have been in classroom settings where we used plans and profiles to try to predict student success and even behavior. I have been told in career centers that if you do this or follow this path, this will work for you because your Myers Briggs test says that this is your personality. I have been through quite a few situations where some ONE, or some THING, tried to predict a path based on some THEORY. Of course, I’m not poo poo-ing theory or paths. I’m just reflecting on the fact that nothing is perfect and that none of us fits neatly inside of any specific package.

Yes, we are all different, we think differently, we act differently. While some people interpreted the mission of Jobs/Apple to get us all to use one product and one ecosystem, much the opposite is true. I read an article recently where it was said that Jobs mantra was to “sell dreams, not products” (read number 7) Instead of trying to get you to use a specific product, the idea was that you was use a product to fit you or to simply enable you to accomplish things how you would want them to be accomplish. Of course, Steve contradicted this a bit when he told us that we were holding the iPhone 4 wrong :-). Nevertheless, most of us search for simplicity, things that just work and work how we want them to. That’s where Jobs was able to capture our imagination and our needs. As a person who HATED ClarisWorks and the old Apple software, its definitely an accomplishment to have brought me to a point where I’m writing this post on an iMac, editing on an iPad using the Blogsy app, and getting ready to trade my Evo in for a 4S.

We will have detractors and those who speak against him and what he did. But, I can already look ahead and see the high school history books of my now 3 year old listing Steve Jobs as one of the greatest innovators of our time. We won’t have to even wait that long I suppose. Yes, we have had other great people that have contributed to our lives, but as a techie, an eLearning developer, a training company owner and as one who simply appreciates genius, I just wanted to take a moment to recognize the effect of Steve Jobs on how I live day to day.

How has this man affected your life?

A couple of months ago, I had a post called Who Killed the Cre8Tivity. It was very interesting to think about the fact that in some ways, structure and our acceptance of specific structures water down our ability to think freely. Don’t get me wrong. We need some parameters so chaos doesn’t take over. But, how can we have structure and yet allow room for free thinking and learning? Any suggestions on how to go about this? ESPECIALLY in elearning development? Check out this TED Talk.

The search for the perfect fit continues. That’s a pretty broad statement. But I make it under the pre-text that most of us are looking for applications, inventions, processes to make our life easier. We aren’t just looking to make it easier, we’re also looking to make it meet our PERSONAL needs. We want something that fits. We want friendships, relationships, jobs, education, ideas, everything to work just the way that we want them to work. That’s not a bad thing. But its also not an easy thing to find.

With the onset of social media apps like Twitter, Facebook, Quora, LinkedIn and now Google +, there are many options for business, personal and learning. We took a moment to sit with social media marketing expert, Lindsey Holmes, to discuss her business and just where social media fits into the landscape. She was excited about the progress, about the potential for education and business and also about what it meant for family communication.

Check out the interview below.

We want to hear your thoughts on the subject. How does social media fit YOU?

This is not eLearning or technology related at all, but I wanted to share an experience because it was fun. A friend emailed me asking for some help with a video that her company was shooting. She explained the concept behind it and shared some information about the artist. She also gave me some links and other information about people who I knew that would be a part of the shoot. What she DIDN’T initially tell me was that my part of the shoot would take place in front of a liquor store in the city at 1 AM. That’s ok. You let certain things pass for high school friends.

So, for the first time in my life, (that I know of anyway) I was a part of a music video. Here’s the result.

OK. Let me have it. Leave your comments. What do you think about my acting skills? Do I have a future in music videos?:-)
