Results : How much would you pay for a season ticket?

Last week I ran a poll asking you to vote on how much you'd pay for a season ticket.

So here are the results :

No more than £600 - 13%
£600 to £1000 - 32%
£1000 to £1250 - 13%
£1250 to £1500 - 8%
£1500 to £2000 - 5%
I'd pay anything to watch my team 29%

So whilst I'm not surprised that 32% wouldn't pay more than £1000, I'm surprised that 29% of you said you'd pay anything to watch your team.

So, while many ticket holders are thinking of giving up their season ticket, because for them it's becoming far too expensive, there will always be a large number of fans that are willing to pay, what ever the club demands!

Arsenal's performance in the dying minutes

If the game against Aston Villa showed us anything, it’s that we should never give up on Arsenal, as the last 2 seconds could be vital. If only the same were true of the matches against Wigan and Middlesbrough!

Yet as our recent poll shows, almost 30% of those that voted, said they leave well before the final whistle. Why? To, “get ahead of the traffic and beat the rush”. And it’s not just Gooners that are guilty of this!

Looking at the Gunners season so far, (and providing I’ve done my sums correctly!) of our ninety two goals, thirty two have been scored after eighty minutes of play, sixteen of which came after eighty five minutes.

So if you left ten minutes before the official ninety, then the final outcome of eleven of the games wouldn’t have been decided before heading off!

But what does this all mean for our last ten guaranteed matches?

Well based on our current scoring rate, we’ll see another 19 goals, 5 of which will appear in the final ten minutes and 3 in the last 5, with the outcome of 2 of the matches being decided in the final 10 minutes.

But, putting the numbers aside, which are never guaranteed, if you’ve got a ticket for one of the remaining games, then stay to the end, our team deserve our support.

Perhaps now more than ever!

POLL: Why do you leave the match before the final whistle?

I'm always amazed at the number of fans that leave the Emirates before the final whistle has been blown.

Given the cost and how difficult it can be to get tickets to see a match, I think if you're luck enough to get to a game, then you should stay and see your team through the bitter end.

Anyway, if your guilty of not staying, what's your reason?

Arsenal: At least we're consistent at home!

Is it just me, or is there a pattern emerging in our home games in the premiership this season. We seem to either have a goal fest, or we struggle to put the ball in the back of the net, despite the chances we’re given.

Season so far: Villa and Everton shine

We've had two weekends of action so I thought I'd have a look at who is doing better and worse than I expected. First up, the achievers.

It goes without saying that Man Utd are doing well. A 100% record and two points clear after 3 games is nothing out of the ordinary for them - especially against teams like Watford, Charlton and Fulham. We need to see them against one of their key rivals to properly gauge their quality this season.

Of the following teams there are three that have had good results so far.

Given their failure last season and total lack of new players, I expected Aston Villa to struggle. However, they now have the O'Neill factor and they are sitting second after some convincing performances. Villa fans would expect a win against Reading but the draw agaiinst Arsenal and win over Newcastle have lifted the team and fans.

Everton also have seven points having beaten Watford, drawn against Blackburn and beaten Tottenham away. Andy Johnson is looking good and may just give them that little extra they needed.

Finally, wheeler-dealer Harry Redknapp has built an impressive team at Portsmouth with six new recruits and seven players released. With new talent such as Sol campbell, David James and Kanu it's maybe no surprise that they beat Blackburn and took a point (and hospitalisation) from Man City. It will be interesting to see how they do tonight.

It's only the beginning of the season but a number of clubs have made an encouraging start. With the possibility of shock results and no guaranteed games we will all be winners with a vibrant and exciting league.

O'Neill Can Do So Much Better.....

According to reports, Martin O'Neill is about to end his football exile by agreeing to manage Aston Villa.

Why?

We hear so much about 'massive' clubs. Like City, Spurs and Sheffield Wednesday Villa are not. Not anymore. A big ground does not make a big club. Fans will say they have won the European Cup but so did Forest.....does that make them bigger than Chelsea, bigger than Arsenal?

Assuming MON's wife is in better health and he wants to get back to work, surely there are better jobs having just gone, or soon in the offing, than the poison chalice at Villa Park. The talk is of takeovers and Deadly Doug being on his way, but what if that doesnt happen, or doesnt happen until after the transfer window has closed?

Even if he does have a budget and time to spend it, where does he start? There isnt a player in the Villa line up who would walk into any other Premier League team. The very best he can hope for is keep the team above water until January and splash out then, but if thats the case why not wait until January to take over?

By then, a better offer may well have arisen. There is always one casualty in the early part of the season (my money this year is on Fergie.) With a reputation such as his, it can only be damaged by taking a chance in the Midlands. If I was MON, Id be sitting on my hands for a little longer.

Wigan to play Villains and run Riot?

Wigan take on Aston Villa at the JJB Stadium tonight knowing that a defeat will practically end any hopes of UEFA Cup qualifications. Although our recent form would suggest that a European place is out of reach, the inconsistency of the teams around and above us means that we still have a faint hope, which could be prolongued or ended tonight.

Back in October, we ran out 2-0 victors at Aston Villa, which was part of our fantastic ten game Premiership unbeaten run. Such a record at this moment in time can only be dreamed of, especially now that we have lost our skipper Arjan De Zeeuw for the rest of the season.

It is no understatement to say that De Zeeuw is our most influential player and without him our back four lacks his experience. Club captain Matt Jackson is also set to miss out, meaning a makeshift back fouris on the cards. The most probable back four would be Chimbonda and Baines at right back and left back, with Scharner being partnered with Henchoz, if fit, at the heart of the defence.

Aston Villaface a similar dilemna at the back, with Laursen and Delaney certain to miss out, whilst their own captain, Melberg, is struggling to make the game.

Form wise, Wigan have failed to win in four attempts in the league, whilst Aston Villa ended a six game winless run with a 3-1 victory over Birmingham. An interesting Stat is that Villa have only beat one top half team this season, way back in August when they beat a then struggling Blackburn.

I expect a few goals tonight. we have not scored more than one goal in a game since we drew 2-2 at Tottenham back in February, and with Villa playing a makeshift defence, our strikers should hopefully prove to be too much to handle. The same cane be said about Milan Baros, if Paul Jewell doesn't choose the right defensive four.

Result: Wigan 3 Villa 1 Hopefully!!

Heroes v Villans

Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain - and most fools do.
Dale Carnegie

So next up Everton welcome Villa at home. In many ways a similar club to us, good history, decent support and, ahem, eccentric chairmen. In fact, the biggest difference is that we spend a lot less time moaning than they do.

The tone for this is of course set by their manager David O'Leary. He is conspicously quiet at the moment. Could this be that he has stopped going on about what great progress he made after Graham Taylor left them in a mess because he's going to finish in exactly the same place? Even Radio Five Live West Midlands sycophant Pat Murphy has failed to 'big him up' recently. That said they gave us a proper do-ing at Xmas, surely this season's nadir (although Bolton home, West Brom away and Bucharest away are also candidates). We've come a long way since then. Hopefully, they haven't.

With the Blues still on course to finish in the top half, adding another north west defeat to Villa's recent reverses at City and Blackburn is critical. We really need to go into the derby with maximum momentum. Villa are pretty much injury ravaged at the moment, and looking at the likely side they'll put out, they've got a good midfield, with Barry, McCann and Davis all pretty decent, but the rest of the side looks eminently beatable.

Elsewhere Blues-wise, James Vaughan is out for the season, which is a pity and we appear to be ready to table (why is it called that) a big bid for Andy Johnson. Despite his wholly unpalatable bungee-dive attempts to get penalties, he could be just what we are looking for. It was interesting to note that Steve Bruce went back in for the player he'd previously thought was inferior to Clinton Morrison. Surely you'd just keep your gob shut and go for someone else.

Othe transfer news suggest Yobo could be on his way. Pre Nations cup he was our outstanding player of the season, now he is quite rightly being kept out of the side by the rejuvenated Stubbs/Weir combo. They are a short-term option, but we really need to push the boat out to keep Joey. Robert Green you say? No, not sure at all.

As for tomorrow, a repeat of last Saturday will do just fine.
