Arsenal : Reason to be Positive

Many Arsenal fans must be feeling pretty depressed. 2008 being a year to forget, as The Gunners threw away a 5 point lead at the top of the Premier League, as well as, in some pundit's opinions, slipping out of the title race this campaign. But there are some positive signs. Take recent results; the last three for example. Arsenal 1-0 Portsmouth; Arsenal 3-1 Plymouth; Arsenal 1-0 Bolton. You'd look at those results and think negatively. A mate said to me "Pompey have sold their best players, we were at home, we should be smashing them." A reasonable statement but you've got to look at the plus points. The last three games we've not played well but still managed to get the results needed. In the last couple of seasons we have not been able to do that. We could play teams off the park but go home frustrated with a point. Now, we're taking all three, albeit in a scrappy, unattractive matter, and it's a sign of a good team.

Arsenal have been nowhere near their best this season, but then you've got to think of it as if there's the best yet to come. Manchester United always come to life in the second half of the season and I think The Gunners will as well. In the double winning campaign of 01/02 we were 12 points I think behind the leaders but obviously came back to win the title.

There is Eduardo to come back soon, and the Croatian is one of if not the deadliest striker in the Premier League. Of course you have to take into account that he won't be at his best for a couple of months but just having him avaliable will be a huge boost. Van Persie has stayed injury free and we are benefiting from it. He's top scorer and is consistently putting in good performances for the team. Walcott is also returning soon which gives us another dimension as well as the creative flair of Rosicky and Fabregas; but their comebacks will be in the rather distant future. Wenger seems to ahve recognised the need for players to come in, and if someone like Arshavin does join, then we've got even more in our arsenal (excuse the pun).

When we're at our flowing best, we're unplayable; as we proved against United, who now hold the 'World Champions' title remember. Arshavin has the quality to plug the gap left by Fabregas' injury, and provides more goals than the inspirational spaniard, something you could well be right in thinking that we have been lacking recently. We got a good draw in the Champions League, I'd expect us to progress past Roma and then who knows? Maybe we could go all the way.

You have to remember that we're still in a transition period. Even the 'great' United were from 2003-2006. They slipped slightly down the league during that time just as we are at the moment. But like our northern rivals, we have bags of talent waiting in the wings and soon they will explode onto the scene and Arsenal will be back where they belong: top of the pile.

Results : How much would you pay for a season ticket?

Last week I ran a poll asking you to vote on how much you'd pay for a season ticket.

So here are the results :

No more than £600 - 13%
£600 to £1000 - 32%
£1000 to £1250 - 13%
£1250 to £1500 - 8%
£1500 to £2000 - 5%
I'd pay anything to watch my team 29%

So whilst I'm not surprised that 32% wouldn't pay more than £1000, I'm surprised that 29% of you said you'd pay anything to watch your team.

So, while many ticket holders are thinking of giving up their season ticket, because for them it's becoming far too expensive, there will always be a large number of fans that are willing to pay, what ever the club demands!

I'm always amazed at the number of fans that leave the Emirates before the final whistle has been blown.

Champions and Strugglers 2007/08

For what it's worth (and from a neutral perspective, given Charlton’s decision not to compete in this year’s Premier League) my pre season selections for Champions League and relegation:

Champions: Man Utd - they have only strengthened this season with the signings of Tevez and Hargreaves and will surely back up their win from last year. Doubts remain around Roo's ability to play with Tevez, and a distinct lack of full back options with want away Heinze and the aging Neviller, but will anyone get close enough to test them out?

2nd Liverpool - yes, said it last year, but Liverpool have to get it right sometime. If Kuyt can show the form he did last year, and Torres/Babel can add some flair, this might finally be the year the Reds show enough consistency to challenge

3rd Chelsea - not the force they were, and I seriously doubt they have enough goals in them to challenge. Shevchenko is likely to be a bit part player at best, and much is reliant on Drogba. Also suspect at the back if Terry is out for too long

4th Spurs - I think I tip Spurs more often that Spurs fans do, but they have got themseleves a bargain in D Bent. The lad is an out and out star, the most trustworthy striker in England and will, mark my words, lead England's assault on Euro 2008. If Berbatov can continue to impress, and Keane/Defoe can deputise, they have the most fearsome strike force in the country. Will be good to watch if nothing else

At the other end of the table, perm any 3 from 5:

Bolton - take a strong, settled manager from a strong, settled club, stand well back and watch the fireworks. For Charlton in 2006 read Bolton in 2007. Poor, holding pattern signings, inexperienced manager, grumpy striker...can it end in anything but tears?

Birmingham - look up ‘panic’ and 'buying' in the dictionary and you'll find a picture of Steve Bruce. Desperately devoid of quality, I cant see them being out of the bottom 3 all year

Middlesborough - have deceptively moved from being 'high fliers' to 'selling club' in recent years, and the route to success is rarely 'sell your best strikers'. Sadly, with Yakubu likely to follow Viduka in plying his trade away from Teeside, it’s hard to see where the goals are going to come from. Add to that a (blindly) loyal chairman, and the writing could be on the wall very early on.

Derby - 4 words; out of their depth

Wigan - like Bolton, have lost their driving force. They have recruited better and more widely than the other stragglers, but it remains to be seen if Chris Hutchings can pull it together. A more experienced man at the helm may have a chance to save them late in the season if Hutching’s fails to succeed.... Neil Warnock, anyone…?

Bolton at centre of BBC bung allegations

After all the build up I watched the BBC Panorama programme on corruption in football with baited breath.

On the one hand, it met expectations with the level of corruption the agents in particular claimed took place. On the other, there wasn't clear cut proof in the form of a manager (or indeed anyone) taking a bung on camera.

I have yet to talk to a football fan who doesn't believe there are corrupt managers in the game. With so much money sloshing around and power being wielded by so few, it would hardly be surprising. But if there are senior figures taking backhanders, they must be doing it carefully else there would have been more than the one example of George Graham getting caught.

Fans have commented on Teamtalk asking why Panorama picked on Allardyce and bleeped out other mangers' names. It's obvious. The BBC could only broadcast names where it felt it had a decent level of proof. If it broadcast the allegations made by agents without substantiating them, the BBC would be open for libel lawsuits.

So the focus was on Allardyce as they had film of the agent and Big Sam's son talking about him. Again though, there was no film of Allardyce taking a bung or stating he wanted or would accept one.

The film leaves the FA in a tricky position. It will have reinforced most people's opinion that football is rotten, but doesn't provide sufficient evidence - unless the BBC have further details on tape that weren't shown - for a clear-cut case.

It seems Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle are going to avoid any penalties for tapping up Middlesborough's Nathan Porritt. Also appears the FA feel harry did nothing wrong.

And Sam? I'm sure there'll be some words said behind closed doors but as long as the results keep coming I'd be surprised to see him lose his job. It could, however, further dent any chance of him ever being England manager.

The most likely outcome is that the agents featured will be targeted and punished - probably losing their licenses - and the FA will claim a job well done.

But in the end, the fans' suspicions will remain and their faith in the FA eroded further.

Bolton take a risk with Anelka

Allardyce may have a reputation of getting the best out of awkward or wayward stars but he'll have his work cut out with his latest signing.

Nicolas Anelka has joined Bolton Wanderers from Fenerbahce for £8m. Anelka is still only 27 but is now on his seventh club - having already played in the premiership for Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City.

He is still a very talented player although he's never recreated his Arsenal highs. The problem with Anelka is more his off-field temperament and the influence of his relatives. I think it's his brother who manages him and was rumoured to have egged him on to leave at least one previous club.

If Anelka behaves true to form big Sam will get one or maybe two good seasons out of him, then we'll hear he's unsettled and he'll move on again.

However, if Allardyce can weave his magic and keep Anelka focused on the game and get him back to somewhere near his best then maybe that £8m isn't so expensive.

The Calm Before the Storm?

It's been quiet here, and I apologise for that... real life (ahem) gets in the way, and in any case, there's not been much news Bolton-wise to report. No new signings, no rumours of signings, no possible exits... but then again...

There is the new fixture list. For the first time in centuries, we start at home, with Spurs the visitors. They'll be hoping for a good start in their UEFA Cup (sob) season, and we'll have a natty new pitch to show off. One just like Wembley's. So expect the game to be delayed six months... the rest of the list offers mostly home ties over Christmas and New Year, with Liverpool at Anfield on New Year's Day, so like 12 months previously expect another slagging off from the despicable Alan Green. The finish is largely favourable, with Aston Villa at The Reebok to close proceedings. Will they be already relegated like their Third City neighbours this year by then?

And will we have ANY new players in the side?

Bolton's annual transfer struggle (part 23)

You don't need me to remind you of the Andy Johnson fiasco again, so I won't. All I'll say is that whilst £8.5m was encouraging in terms of ambition (and I'm sure it wasn't a ploy to sell season tickets - if it was you might as well go for Ronaldinho) it would have been a gamble. And it looks like Fortune is off to play some, ahem, competitive football in Scotland. Meanwhile Sam, he who planned to bring in six new players by the start of the World Cup (five days to go, nowt to show) has revised his views.

Sad to say, but it's like this every year, isn't it? Big plans, top rank targets, and they always say "no." There are any number of reasons for this. Do we not offer an attractive enough financial package? Is it the innacurate propaganda carelessly bandied about by the likes of Alan 'not good enough for TV' Green? Are we naive insofar that agents use us in the knowledge that bigger fish can easily gazump us? Or is it, despite three straight top eight finishes and a season in Europe, that footballers still have to get out an atlas to look for Bolton?

Remember Rivaldo? A couple of seasons ago news leaked out that the Brazilian superstar, famed for hurting in all the wrong places he's hit, might, just might, be joining Bolton Wanderers. Really. The fans and media were dumbstruck with admiration at the audacious acquisition. Then, just when it looked as if the raisin-headed one was within our grasp, it all started to go 'Pete Tong.'

Other clubs started bidding. Celtic for one. Rivi's agent typically stepped in and began being nice to our friends in green north of the border instead of us. Quatar's oil rich sheik's starting sniffing too. Phil Gartside got the jitters. Neville Chamberlain-like, he stepped outside the Reebok and spoke of the "fax in his pocket" that was obviously so precious he couldn't pull it out from amid half a polo mint packet, petrol receipts and moths to show the world. Has he kept and framed it in his office? We'll never know.

Andy Johnson In, Sammy Lee Out?

The last few days have seen the Bolton Wanderers rumour factory (mill is such a cliché) crank into overdrive. Whilst it’s easy to take anything you read in the tabloids with a pinch of salt, some of the noises from the Reebok suggest something is happening behind the boardroom doors.

First up, Andy Johnson. He has his critics, of course. One season in the Premiership; yes, he scored plenty goals, but most of them were from penalties (and how many of those do Bolton get?). And having been in the Championship the last couple of seasons, well… even Henrik Pedersen could score against Crewe or Brighton. So he’s not worth £7m. Especially with Borgetti and his wood-warmed arse still about.

Well, I know, living in the West Midlands, that Johnson has always been highly rated, even if he wasn’t that well utilised at Birmingham City. As a quick, pacy prospect the blue-nosed faithful were sad to see him go. And pace, youth and an England cap are what he’s got. Is Borgetti better? He’s more experienced and has bags of international goals to his credit. But Johnson has the youth. Hell, I’d try him and Borg upfront. Blistering!
