Results : How much would you pay for a season ticket?

Last week I ran a poll asking you to vote on how much you'd pay for a season ticket.

So here are the results :

No more than £600 - 13%
£600 to £1000 - 32%
£1000 to £1250 - 13%
£1250 to £1500 - 8%
£1500 to £2000 - 5%
I'd pay anything to watch my team 29%

So whilst I'm not surprised that 32% wouldn't pay more than £1000, I'm surprised that 29% of you said you'd pay anything to watch your team.

So, while many ticket holders are thinking of giving up their season ticket, because for them it's becoming far too expensive, there will always be a large number of fans that are willing to pay, what ever the club demands!

Arsenal's Lehmann, the highlight of the Everton match

Well the match itself must have been the most un-inspiring I've seen this season. So much so, that the guys behind me were talking about our new Mayor and not the footie!

The team looked lethargic and ready for a break. The only real energy and sparks came from Song at the back, who was solid throughout and O2 player of the month Theo Walcott, though his performance seemed to tail off. It was good to see us eke out a win, in what could have so easily been a nil nil draw.

So, the real highlight was seeing Jens play, in what is likely to have been his final match at the Emirates and being able to show my appreciation for all the enjoyment he's given us.

Yes, he's had his moments over the years, but he's provided loads to talk about and I think the Premiership will be poorer without him. There seems to be less characters in the game than there used to be.

Anyway, I came across this short video tribute to Jens Lehmann on YouTube. He's certainly pulled off some terrific saves for us during his Arsenal career. Take a look!

Thanks Jens!

POLL: Why do you leave the match before the final whistle?

I'm always amazed at the number of fans that leave the Emirates before the final whistle has been blown.

Given the cost and how difficult it can be to get tickets to see a match, I think if you're luck enough to get to a game, then you should stay and see your team through the bitter end.

A small team like Everton?

Oh dear, poor old Rafa has insulted half of Merseyside with his comment after the Liverpool derby that 'small' teams come to Anfield and sit back, and Everton being one of them.

Understandably the blue half is a bit miffed about being called a small team.

Alan Shearer tried to excuse Rafa suggesting he meant clubs outside the top 4.

So was it a limited grasp of English or does Benitez see his derby opponents as small fry?

Charlton: The Hermannator

The performances of Mr. Hreidarsson have been a frequent worry of mine and this is well known to most people that come into regular contact with me. I've been on his case for a while now but for all this time his blunders had been staged at the left back position.

The return of the more natural full back; Djimi Traoré against Everton, has resulted in Herman being shifted across to play centre-half, and he looked very comfortable. In this position his awful distribution of the ball is largely irrelevant and his talents of heading, clearing and tackling come more into play. In the Everton game, excluding the own goal (which any reasonable observer would have put down to nothing more than bad luck), he never looked like letting anyone through.

The relevance of this is that the relatively inconsistent back line Charlton possess could have found their key man. Perhaps it was just a one-off good performance, but in this scenario, at least it is one more player keeping Fortune out of the first team.

Please let me know your opinion.

Newcastle Utd - A view from Anfield Road Lower

Wednesdays performance against todays opponents local rivals was not at all disgraceful, despite drawing a blank and coming home with no points.

A goal out of the blue and a freak goal towards the end do not really reflect the pattern of play, which I would suggest was good for a draw. At times I felt we showed them a bit too much respect and didn't really have a proper go at them. Another problem was not making the most of the numerous set pieces we had in the second half. Corner after corner came to very little, and at a place like Anfield where the opposition hold on to the ball and stick every man behind the ball when you are in possession, you have to make the most of those opportunities.

I won't dwell on this point too long, but the referee certainly cost us a shot at the game. A blatant foul on Shola Ameobi right in front of me should have resulted in a penalty, and the double handball appeal seemed decent as well, but these things happen in football.

Seeing Craig Bellamy miss a sitter after he tried to wind us up by holding his Liverpool badge is something I will remember fondly. Less memorable was seeing Dirk Kuyt score his first Liverpool goal in front of the fans he could quite easily have been playing for had we got our act together in the transfer window.

Moving on to Steve Harper's slip, it was just one of those things and I am confident he will recover well. As I said in my report from West Ham he is a quality keeper and is capable of doing a very good job in Given's absence.

It will be interesting to see who Roeder starts with against Everton. N'Zogbia is making life very difficult for Roeder, as it's impossible to leave out a player that is on such good form. Then again Milner and Duff on the flanks worked well against West Ham, and I not so keen on Duff playing on the right. Depending on Shola's fitness I think Roeder will play N'Zogbia in a central role with Martins up front on his own. It's certainly nice to have options though!

I think 3 points today is absolutely essential what with Man Utd coming up and the last home loss against Fulham, but it will be tough against Everton who are on good form themselves. Hopefully we will get the bit of luck that never came against Liverpool and claim 3 points that we did in this fixture last season.

Season so far: Villa and Everton shine

We've had two weekends of action so I thought I'd have a look at who is doing better and worse than I expected. First up, the achievers.

It goes without saying that Man Utd are doing well. A 100% record and two points clear after 3 games is nothing out of the ordinary for them - especially against teams like Watford, Charlton and Fulham. We need to see them against one of their key rivals to properly gauge their quality this season.

Of the following teams there are three that have had good results so far.

Given their failure last season and total lack of new players, I expected Aston Villa to struggle. However, they now have the O'Neill factor and they are sitting second after some convincing performances. Villa fans would expect a win against Reading but the draw agaiinst Arsenal and win over Newcastle have lifted the team and fans.

Everton also have seven points having beaten Watford, drawn against Blackburn and beaten Tottenham away. Andy Johnson is looking good and may just give them that little extra they needed.

Finally, wheeler-dealer Harry Redknapp has built an impressive team at Portsmouth with six new recruits and seven players released. With new talent such as Sol campbell, David James and Kanu it's maybe no surprise that they beat Blackburn and took a point (and hospitalisation) from Man City. It will be interesting to see how they do tonight.

It's only the beginning of the season but a number of clubs have made an encouraging start. With the possibility of shock results and no guaranteed games we will all be winners with a vibrant and exciting league.

They may have only played one game of the season but Everton fans are already rejoicing.

I was trawling through the football sites on my blogroll to review the weekend's matches when I came across EvertonBlog's summary of the game against Watford.

Jol joins as Everton World cup mission starts in earnest

It is all one to me if a man comes from Sing Sing Prison or Harvard. We hire a man, not his history. Malcolm S Forbes.

So Moyesy finally got his man, and he looks pretty chuffed as well.

It’s also entirely clear that Everton’s media machine has got the PR spot on recently, or these players are genuinely pleased to join coz old Joleon, rugged rather than classical in appearance, said all the right things Andy Johnson-style. Nice one. As pointed out before, the TV dominance of the Premier League probably means most of us haven’t seen that much of him. But, as ever, in Moyes we trust. After all, his last big centre-half signing went OK didn’t? Alan Stubbs, of course.

Best transfer link so far has to be Naysmith to Stuttgart. Now Watford yeah, but Stuttgart. What is their scouting policy? They’ve noticed that we’ve got 4 left-backs, but they’ve chosen the one who runs like a really slow Paula Radcliffe, and possibly stops mid-game to go to the bog. Weird.

And the 3 countries represented by Everton players have all now played in the World Cup.

Nuno looked like a class act as Portugal cruised past Angola. He was self-assuredness personified as the man who ‘honestly doesn’t want to leave Everton and has absolutely no idea where the rumours came from’ ambled through a one-sided, albeit 1-0 win.

Far too much has already been written about Tim Cahill inspiring the Socceroos to victory. It does seem odd that Gus (pronounced hoos) Hiddink decided to start with him on the bench but it all turned out nicely in the end. Watch out for the Aussies getting through next phase and proving to be really tough opponents.

As for Tim Howard, he can’t get a game, slightly worrying for us perhaps, although you’d have thought that Brad Friedel is also better than Keller, unless he’s jacked it in. Anyway, Tim should be home pretty soon to get used to Everton as a defeat to Italy, will see the septics on their way home.

It’s been an OK World Cup so far, with that perennial problem of refereeing probably not being quite as bad as in previous tournaments. However, having just clocked the highlights of South Korea v Togo (fried dogs ‘to go’?), unaware there had been a sending off, up pops this jumped up tosser obviously taking great pleasure in brandishing a card with a flourish, sprinting over to proffer said, second yellow then red. Yep, such was Mr Graham Poll of Tring’s excitement, that he pulled the red out first. Bless.

Anyhow, Real Life Blues is off to Germany to do some real life scouting mission over the next few days. You’ll read it here first.

Les co crazyness for Everton?

The scars of others should teach us caution.
St Jerome.

Hmmm, the Lescott issue is perplexing. There is definitely some kind of problem, a knee bashing administered by a baseball bat seems to be the favourite, and whilst this is a disappointment, we need to be patient.

The latterly extremely bullish official Everton website has gone very quiet and the view from the humorously named Jez Moxley of Wolves is that we need more time and that they respect that. Suppose it puts them in a tricky spot now as well as hawking ‘damaged goods’ will have a stigma after Everton have knocked him back. And the Everton doctors seem to have been proved right on both Davis and Forsell.

Alternatives are being considered with Andy Webster of Hearts and Abdoulaye Meite of Marseille, apparently. Robert Huth (would he have been Everton’s first ever German?) appears to ‘favour a move to the North-East’, possibly the centre half’s graveyard of St James’ Park. Anyway, whatever the Blues do we should proceed with caution. We were all starting to lose faith on the Johnson deal, but it all turned out OK in the end, well didn’t it?

Looking at the wider transfer market, some Blues will be dismayed that we appear to be signing Man Utd ‘rejects’ in the form of Phil Neville and Tim Howard. Interestingly in the time of Chelsea signing Ballack and Shevchenko, it also appears that some of our so called ‘more illustrious’ North West rivals are also some way down the transfer food chain. Reports suggest that United are in for Gudjohnsen, and Liverpool for Wright-Phillips or even Damien Duff. So maybe just about all of us are dining on crumbs from a more lavish table.

Finally, we had a look the other day, probably tempting fate on the state of Joleon’s knee, at a potential starting line up for next year of;
Howard – Hibbert, Lescott, Yobo, Valente – Neville (or Carsley), Cahill, Arteta, Osman – Beattie, Johnson.
The one thing this team appears to lack is a proper big 'enforcer' in midfield, a Papa Bouba Diop or a Viera, or even, dare we say it, Sissoko. Moyesy has apparently tried to sign Diop, and virtually did sign Sissoko so this is no kind of criticism, but these players whilst sometimes looking ungainly, are worth their weight in Robert Green Esso World Cup coins. A beastly midfielder would probably allow Arteta and Osman to play, and Cahill to bomb forward more.

Just a thought. Next time we will really look at the 3 Everton players off to the World Cup, and maybe check out some of the former Blues making the trip. No, not him. See ya.

van Nistelrooy next for Everton

I’d say the biggest problem all my life……it’s money. It takes a lot of money to make these dreams come true. Walt Disney

Sorry just kidding about the equine boat-ed one. You almost believed it though didn’t you, the way we’ve been splashing the cash around this week.

Hats off to the board for the excellent job they have done in securing the services (to coin a weird phrase) of Andy Johnson. No one knows how he will turn out but you’d be hard pushed to find a Blue who didn’t want to get him, despite the fact that we’ve probably paid slightly over the odds.

And a massive well done to Johnson for his textbook behaviour upon signing. Within 48 hours he managed to offer 110% effort, say that he would rate his sense of anticipation at 12 out of 10, both wore and held up an Everton shirt at the same time, and managed to praise the fans and the ground. Perfect. Let’s hope he becomes a legend and reserves his special efforts for the team against whom he missed a Cup Final penalty.

It’s pretty confusing as to exactly where the money is coming from, the new TV deal maybe, but hopefully we are not just ‘living the dream’. Next through the door marked ‘in’ at Bellefield will be Joleon Lescott. It says a lot about what is bad about football/Sky that very few blues will have seen much of Lescott. He looks like he’s strong and rugged, like a ‘proper’ centre half, and could be a good partner for Yobo in the long-term. That’s if we can get Joey to sign up again.

One thing to say about Johnson and Lescott is that there appears to be a lesser risk in signing players from the Championship than from abroad. We know Johnson has cut it in the top flight for Palace anyway. We have also witnessed just how impressively Tim Cahill adjusted to life in the top flight. Moyesy has had his problems in the transfer market, but most of his home based signings have been sound (yeah, we're treating Simon Davies as a foreigner here)

If we do sign Lescott we could conceivably start the season with a side which reads;
Howard – Hibbert, Lescott, Yobo, Valente – Osman, Cahill, Neville (or Carsley) Arteta – Beattie, Johnson, which looks pretty handy and at least a top half side, if not better.

Back to Johnson, it looks like he’s very unlikely to go to the World Cup, with Defoe defo ahead of him. Suits us just fine, after the Barmby and Rooney experiences, we don’t want Andy Johnson putting in some Kenny Sansom/Clive Allen style 2 month stay before pissing off somewhere else. Lock him away and get him ready to fly from August.

On the subject of En-ger-land, a little moan, don’t worry, this isn’t going to go all Toffeeweb on you. There was one moment which illustrated a lot of what is wrong with this game we never, ever, ever call Soccer. On Wednesday night BBC showed 4 half-wits in curly wigs in the crowd wearing T-shirts which, once arranged in the correct order, spelled out the word ‘T-H-E-O’. Cack. Worse still, an overzealous Old Trafford steward was straight over telling them to sit down. Awful.

Next up we’ll take a look at the Everton players who are off to the World Cup, and no doubt report on our next multi-million signing.
