Champions League: Glory for Arsenal and Chelsea, frustration for Manchester and Tottenham

The first week of the Champions League proper has seen two nights of differing fortunes.

Tuesday night was one of frustration for the two English clubs involved in the group stage. Manchester United were held by a very resilient Rangers team and Tottenham let a two-goal away lead against Werder Bremen slip out of their hands to also end with a draw.

On Wednesday night we saw an outstanding display from Arsenal who strolled past Braga, and a very accomplished performance from Chelsea to beat MSK Zilina.

These results mirror the teams' start to the season. Chelsea couldn't have stamped their authority on the Premier League any more clearly than they have with their first 4 games and deservedly top the table. Admittedly they haven't faced the toughest of opposition yet but even so, 17 goals in four games with only 1 conceded is a fantastic start.

Chelsea dominated the first half against Zilina taking a deserved 3-0 lead into half-time. However, after another goal just after the break they sat back and had a dissapointing spell, allowing Zilina to get back into the game and claw a goal back. While Chelsea still had a comfortable lead, this was surprising from a side that happily put 6 goals past Wigan and West Brom.

Arsenal are just behind Chelsea in the Premiership table thanks to a draw with Liverpool on the opening day of the season. The Gunners are playing beautiful football with confidence, even against Bolton who historically have posed the team a problem.

Against Braga, Arsenal showed how they can not only dominate possession with crisp passing and excellent movement, but they can be incisive and make that possession count. Arsenal started the game intent on a win and had that sealed by half time. Encouragingly they didn't then dip like Chelsea, but kept chasing right through to the end and the only question was why only six? A great commanding display from Fabregas led the team but they all played their part. Chamahk pulled the defenders out of position to give others opportunities, Wilshere made some great forward passes and the defence was solid.

In comparison, Manchester United had a poor night on Tuesday. Yes Rangers came with only Plan A - park the bus in front of the goal. That said, United had two failings. First, the players on the pitch didn't play well. United are usually the kind of team that can undo a tight defence (it's usually Arsenal who struggle there) and their lack of success was as much down to their failings as it was to Walter Smith's tactics.

The second failing was Ferguson's choice of substitutes. Fair enough that he wants to rest key players if he believes he can win the game. But you keep them on the bench in case the game needs changing. And it did. Nil-nil against Rangers is two points lost for Manchester United and he should have had Berbatov, Scholes and nani on the bench ready to shake-up the team.

Finally, Tottenham 'were taught a lesson' about the Champions League on Tuesday. Spurs showed their potential in the first half, taking a two goal lead and delighting fans with the quality of their football. Their attacking play was strong and the defence was certain, giving the confidence to push forward. But the second half highlighted where they still have work to do. They left Werder Bremen too much room behind the midfield and Lennon failed to double up on the left defence. Bremen deserved to equalise and Spurs were even lucky to get the draw by the end. That said, the evening should have been satisfying for Spurs fans overall - a point away from home against a strong team and signs of the potential of the team.

So an interesting first week in the Champions League. There's a long way to go and team form changes over the season but we should see at least three, if not all four, English teams proceed to the next stage.

Questions being asked of Arsenal

Travelling into London today, I could see grey clouds hovering over the Emirates. It seemed to reflect my mood and the mood of many Gooners, following last nights draw against Spurs.

It's not often that I've wished that I left ten minutes before the end of the match. I could have lived in blissful ignorance as to what was occurring in the final minutes of the game, like the many Tottenham fans that had vacated the stadium and missed out on the opportunity to party.

Walking back from the match, I couldn't help but hear many of the questions that were being asked of the Gunners performance.

"What was Almunia doing off his line"

"Clichy is normally so solid and reliable, how did he slip up?"

"What was Wenger doing taking Walcott and Van Persie off?"

"Ade was terrible. Why wasn't he taken off?"

"What does Wenger really see in Denilson and why does he stick with him?"

"Why did we spend all the money on the stadium?"

"How can we expect to win the title, when we can't even beat Spurs? Everyone beats Spurs!"

Despite the game ending in a draw, it definitely felt like we'd lost the match. One seasoned fan, who I think was just mulling over his own view of the game in his mind, suddenly blurted out "Well that's football".

Which sums it up!

POLL: Who do you think will win the Premiership?

With the start of the premiership looming, it's that time of year again when the football pundits come out and potentially make their poorest predictions.

Last year I seem to recall, Spurs were going to finish above Arsenal!

So, who do you think will finish top this season?

Results : How much would you pay for a season ticket?

Last week I ran a poll asking you to vote on how much you'd pay for a season ticket.

So here are the results :

No more than £600 - 13%
£600 to £1000 - 32%
£1000 to £1250 - 13%
£1250 to £1500 - 8%
£1500 to £2000 - 5%
I'd pay anything to watch my team 29%

So whilst I'm not surprised that 32% wouldn't pay more than £1000, I'm surprised that 29% of you said you'd pay anything to watch your team.

So, while many ticket holders are thinking of giving up their season ticket, because for them it's becoming far too expensive, there will always be a large number of fans that are willing to pay, what ever the club demands!

Can Arsenal win the league?

Firstly, a big thanks to Spurs and to Dimitar Berbatov, for holding United to a draw at the week end. Thanks must also go to Portsmouth for keeping Chelsea at bay. Once again we climb to the top of the table and are clear by 2 points!

Had I been asked to predict at the start of the season where we'd be at this point in time, I wouldn't have said top. Last year we were 4th at this point. If I recall, some pundits were even predicting Spurs to be sitting above us! So it just goes to show how wrong even the pro's can be at gazing into the future. But given what I know now, like Cesc Fabrigas, I believe Arsenal can win the league.

Why?

1) Despite the frustration that Wenger didn't buy any new players, (or ones that would make a difference this year!), the likes of Almunia, Clichy and Senderos are coming good and are really upping their game. A couple of months ago I'd have quite happily seen Senderos on the transfer market, but not now! Wenger has options, but I guess he knew that all along!

2) Adebayor - He's improving with every game. Already this season he's scored 18 goals, that's 10 more than he scored in total last year in the league. Since we still have to play Man United and Chelsea away, which could well be the league deciders, there's nothing to suggest that the goals wont keep coming. How does the song go?

"Adebayor, Adebayor, give him the ball, and he will score" or something like that!

3) Flamini has tremendous passion and as demonstrated against Newcastle, he can cross the ball with pin point accuracy and has a blinding strike power. If he can replicate that kind of performance until the end of the season, we'll be un-beatable!

4) And with the imminent return of Toure, Rosicky and Robin Van Persie - well!

So the team may be young, we may have some way to go and may need to hit the 90 point mark to win the league, but the team believes they can do it, Wenger certainly does, so why shouldn't I?

Fancy writing here, please get in touch.

Why Tottenham Hotspur are under-performing

At the start of this season, same as last season, I expected to see Tottenham easing into the 5th spot and challenging for 4th.

Yet after being so close to taking the fourth position from their North London rivals, Arsenal, in 2005 and claiming 5th spot last year - though eight points behind 4th place Arsenal - Spurs are fighting off relegation this season.

With only two wins in the Premiership Spurs are a point above the relegation places. Seven losses (four at home) and six draws points to a pretty poor start by any big team's standards.

But why are they in this position? They've got a squad of good players and a manager with a strong pedigree. Ramos may be new but usually that gives a team a short-term boost.

Any team that can boast Berbatov, Keane, Defoe and Bent up front should be able to score goals. And Tottenham do. They've scored 2 or more goals in 6 of their 15 Premiership matches, scoring four goals in three of them. And they're averaging 2.6 goals per game across the 5 UEFA cup matches played so far.

In midfield they have Huddlestone, Jenas, Routledge and others and in defence a selection including the excellent youngster Bale, Chimbonda, Dawson and Ledley King. They may not be the biggest international names but they are all rated.

Yet they've only kept two clean sheets in the Premiership and one in the UEFA cup. In 8 league games they've conceded two or more goals. This could be down to the defenders' injury list - currently King, Assou-Ekotto, Gardner and Rocha all out and Bale now out for a second spell.

There were signs of similar problems last season. Looking at the league table, although Spurs finished 5th and scored 57 goals they conceded 54 - around double that of the four teams above them and more than the 4 teams immediately behind them.

It's clear that Spurs' strong attacking options aren't going to win them any medals unless they can sort the defence out. With the Janury transfer window looming it's clear where Ramos' priorities should lie.

Champions and Strugglers 2007/08

For what it's worth (and from a neutral perspective, given Charlton’s decision not to compete in this year’s Premier League) my pre season selections for Champions League and relegation:

Champions: Man Utd - they have only strengthened this season with the signings of Tevez and Hargreaves and will surely back up their win from last year. Doubts remain around Roo's ability to play with Tevez, and a distinct lack of full back options with want away Heinze and the aging Neviller, but will anyone get close enough to test them out?

2nd Liverpool - yes, said it last year, but Liverpool have to get it right sometime. If Kuyt can show the form he did last year, and Torres/Babel can add some flair, this might finally be the year the Reds show enough consistency to challenge

3rd Chelsea - not the force they were, and I seriously doubt they have enough goals in them to challenge. Shevchenko is likely to be a bit part player at best, and much is reliant on Drogba. Also suspect at the back if Terry is out for too long

4th Spurs - I think I tip Spurs more often that Spurs fans do, but they have got themseleves a bargain in D Bent. The lad is an out and out star, the most trustworthy striker in England and will, mark my words, lead England's assault on Euro 2008. If Berbatov can continue to impress, and Keane/Defoe can deputise, they have the most fearsome strike force in the country. Will be good to watch if nothing else

At the other end of the table, perm any 3 from 5:

Bolton - take a strong, settled manager from a strong, settled club, stand well back and watch the fireworks. For Charlton in 2006 read Bolton in 2007. Poor, holding pattern signings, inexperienced manager, grumpy striker...can it end in anything but tears?

Birmingham - look up ‘panic’ and 'buying' in the dictionary and you'll find a picture of Steve Bruce. Desperately devoid of quality, I cant see them being out of the bottom 3 all year

Middlesborough - have deceptively moved from being 'high fliers' to 'selling club' in recent years, and the route to success is rarely 'sell your best strikers'. Sadly, with Yakubu likely to follow Viduka in plying his trade away from Teeside, it’s hard to see where the goals are going to come from. Add to that a (blindly) loyal chairman, and the writing could be on the wall very early on.

Derby - 4 words; out of their depth

Wigan - like Bolton, have lost their driving force. They have recruited better and more widely than the other stragglers, but it remains to be seen if Chris Hutchings can pull it together. A more experienced man at the helm may have a chance to save them late in the season if Hutching’s fails to succeed.... Neil Warnock, anyone…?

As a Gooner, who did you want to win, Spurs or Chelsea?

Tricky question this one. When talking to my neighbour who is also an Arsenal fan, he was backing Spurs, such is his dislike for Chelsea.

Man United's Ronaldo: Hero or Villain?

If you're a Man United fan then I guess the answer to this one is clear and simple. He's a hero. He's scored something like 15 goals this season and only been yellow carded once and has tremendous skill and ability!

Arsenal worthy winners or cheats?

According to an anonymous comment left on Harry Hotspur we only won the match by cheating! Sounds like sour grapes to me!

O.k so Graham Poll may have done us a favour or two, but the win was nothing more than we deserved. Even Martin Jol agreed :

"You can talk about the decisions and they probably did cost us goals, but I would be embarrassed to talk about them too much. We did not lose because of them.

"We saw that Thierry Henry was not playing and we knew Arsenal had lost recent games.

"We sensed this was an opportunity, so we are disappointed."

So another win against Spurs in the league, making that the 14th without defeat and we continue our consistent approach with yet another 3 nil win!

Keep it up Arsene!
