Mark is currently a Partner of Avelogic, a local IT company specializing in HR and IT solutions.
On top of being an expert in HR and IT field, he is also highly experienced in leading Toastmasters Clubs.

Mark is the Club President of Cairnhill Mandarin Toastmasters Club, as well as Vice-President (Education) of Star Millennium Advanced Toastmasters Club.
As a passionate person about Toastmasters, he often gave nuermous speeches and took up leadership roles in the 2 clubs above, which led him to achieving
his Advanced Communicator Bronze and Advanced leader Bronze award. In addition, Mark also won numerous speech awards at Toastmasters speech contests,
with the recent champion award in Evaluation contest (2010) and 1st runner-up award in International Speech contest (2011).

Radin Mas Toastmasters Club is organizing a special segment, which invites speakers with experience and expertise in their line of work or interest. The first speaker is a full-time ACTA certified trainer and certified practicing management consultant, as well as our Club advisor, Ann Lee, DTM.

Trainer’s profile:
Her soft skills training include Lean six sigma lean training, public speaking, leaderships, customer relationship, team-building and presentation skills. She holds a 2nd class honours B.A. degree for International Business Management from University of Northumbria, United Kingdom (Newcastle Business School).

Her long and distinguished career had taken her to almost every corner of the China market, including leadership role in different business units and as an expatriate executive posted in Beijing, China for three years (2000 to 2003). Moreover, her sales & marketing experience for strategic planning of marketing program activities, brand identity development, customer relationship building, channel business development and sales product training given in the workshops/seminars in different cities of China had brought her to greater height.

Her extensive experience, proven leadership and in-depth knowledge of the business process planning in corporate environment including 6 years’ experience in program management and business operations responsible for the cost effectiveness of project launches and on time delivery of the product meeting customer satisfaction within targeted timeframe had built on several milestones of her success. She was officially certified by Motorola in 2008 on Six Sigma Green Belt for DMAIC methodology to assist department to achieve substantial annual net cost-savings and improve the efficiency level. Hence, she is currently a certified business consultant for government funding projects for SMEs. Due to her vibrant character, she was once a Team leader, Facilitator & Emcee for two team building events in Motorola (2005 – 2008).

Ann proudly received the Distinguished Toastmaster Award (2011) and “Excellent Leadership Award” (2010) from Toastmasters International. She also honorably received “President Distinguished Excellence Leadership Award” and “Special Citation
Award” for the year (2009/2010) as an Area Governor for coaching 4 Toastmasters
(English) clubs. She is currently the Immediate Past President (2008/2009) and the Club Advisor of Radin Mas Toastmasters Club.

The title of her segment is: “PowerPoint Presentation: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly”

You can learn from our trainer on the tried and proven method of creating excellent PowerPoint slides, while avoiding the nasty pitfalls of bad PowerPoint slides. Tips will be shared on how to design a theme that is appealing and attractive to your targeted audience.

Everyone wants a perfect 10 for any effort that they put in. This perfect 10 comes as a recognition for their effort.

10 years! 10 years! 10 years!

How many 10 years can we survive? Our club has been in operation for the past 10 years! This is possible only because all of our members, past and present, have put in their best effort to make it happen.

I am so proud of everyone who has made this a reality and this coming Monday is the day. It is the day for us to celebrate, to recognise and to reward all who have made this happened.

Chinese New Year Special Segment: Affirming Culture

This was the night for our Chinese members to celebrate CNY with the traditional "lo hei." Our invited speaker, Ms. Jacqueline Tang, ACB, spoke fluently and eloquently in Mandarin, translating her feature about affirming culture into English for the benefit of our Indian guests.

Likening his cellular phone to a girlfriend, Gary (project 5- Your Body Speaks) effectively grabbed the audience's attention before highlighting three contributions of mobile phones: instant feedback, enhancing our independent lifestyles, and usefulness in saving lives and communicating in the event of emergencies.

Geetha spinned several mind-benders in her P6-Vocal Variety speech "What you think you become," the most memorable of which was, "Money is NOT positive thinking." Finally, Melanie offered three pointers for managing stress in her P8-Visual Aids speech: alter, avoid or accept.

For the Table Topics segment, Heng presented mentally challenging and controversial topics which guests and members alike gamely tackled.

Kelvin has been providing holistic service for more than 10 years. Ever since 15, he had been doing consultations for people around him. These people include professional client, friends, family and guest. In 2003 he joined the company NEW AGE CIRCLE where he became an in house facilitator for a year. After the company dissolved, Kelvin continued as a free -lance consultant at Miracle Gardens. In 2005, Kelvin gotten his ordination as a priest and open his own centre known as the Melchizedek symbols of Life Academy.

The services, which Kelvin offers, are color consultation, palmistry, Zi Wei astrology, tarot and Numerology. Color consultation is conducted using color tubes. Through selection, one can find out about the client’s needs, inner thoughts and persona. Palmistry and face reading is reading of features and marks on the body. Through the reading, one can find out about specific life issues such as health and career etc… Oracle and tarot reading involve the deciphering of pictures and hidden messages within the cards to find out more about specific life events. For example one may find out more about why there are obstacles in your abundance. Zi wei Astrology unlocks the mystery of an individual’s destiny based on the stars that associate with the individual. Finally Numerology is the analysis of a person’s luck cycle based on the date of birth and the name of the individual.

In year 2008, Kelvin was also invited to Greece, Athens to conduct a seminar on Spiritual development.

Seven Wonders of Toastmasters--113th Chapter Meeting

John:

"Monday was the day when our speechcrafters experienced for themselves the flow of an actual chapter meeting. Monday was the day when we had a panel of judges to share with the prepared speech speakers on how to improve their speeches.

Instead of saying we experienced Monday blues, we were able to feel the orangy energy of the sun right at Radin Mas Toastmasters' club. Not only did we experience the 'blue' and the 'orange', we also experience a whole range of other colours as speechcrafters shared the colours of their lives.

The Singapore Idol style of evaluation was adopted for evaluation by our gracious guest evaluators--this meant each speech was broken down into individual components - the organization and content, the body language, the vocal variety and the use of language."

Mike:

"It was another evening of fun, learning and inspiration.

Sergeant-at-Arms TM Heah started off the meeting asking each member on which area of communication would he or she be interested to improve on.

Area D1 Governor, Ann, acting President (President Paul was away on a business trip), inspired us with her “7 wonders” and “3Ps” in her life--

1. I am a slow walker, but I never walk backwards (Abraham Lincoln)

2. I may be weak in my communication, but I never stop learning and practicing

3. I have fear in my public speaking, but I am not afraid of being evaluated for my own improvement.

4. I can conquer my own fear of failure to take courageous steps towards my goals

5. I can rest for a while to prepare myself for any challenges ahead in this learning path

6. I can meet people of like-mind along the way who can share the same goal or interest with me

7. I can vanquish my own procrastination and seek what really matters to me

These are the wonders that we can find in the toastmaster journey. But again, the inner quality of oneself must possess 3 x P: Passion, positive and perseverance (3 P)

Radin Mas Toastmasters Club was honoured to have District 80 LGM, DTM Michael Rodrigues as a guest of honor to present a talk on how to tackle Table Topics with success. Members and guests were busy taking notes during his presentation on the 3 different ways of tackling Table Topics.

Immediately after DTM Michael Rodrigues’ talk, we had the Table Topics segment, which was presented by our member cum club treasurer, Mike, CC, CL. 6 brave members and guests came up and answered the Table Topics, creating much laughter and entertainment to the club.

After the refreshment break, we had 3 members giving their speeches. TM Jason gave an informative speech on a topic called “Black Swan”. TM Dickson gave a persuasive speech titled “The Leadership Training Seminar”. TM Sanyay gave an entertaining and informative speech on the topic “Ragging in India”. They were evaluated on a panel of evaluators, which made of external guests: Daisy Neo, CC, CL, Lynda Neo, CC, ALS, Chee Kim Loon, ACB, CL, and our own member, Chen Junsheng, CC, ALB. The panel of evaluators touched on the different areas of improvement and their recommendations on how to improve on these areas benefited the speakers, as well as the audience.

The last item was another talk by DTM Michael Rodrigues on leadership. In his talk, he highlighted the importance that the Exco need to walk the talk, and lead by example. “Make Members Matter” was the next motto raised by him, as members made up the club. He also mentioned that the key way to attract new members was to ensure each and every chapter meeting vibrant and fun.

This was a meeting from which the Exco, members and guests benefited greatly."

Seven Wonders and 3P were quoted by Ann Lee who strongly believes in applying these in her learning journey.

Celebrations - 112th Meeting (26 th Oct, 2009)

CONGRATULATIONS: PRESIDENT PAUL HAS COMPLETED HIS P10!

This evening, our distinguished guests included Karla Sundaram (Bukit Timah TMC), Honey Yee (Leng Kee ATMC), Gurion Ang, ACB CL from Ngee Ann Poly TMC, Rosalind Siah (Singhealth TMC), our Division D Governor, DTM Quek Geok Cheng, and DTM Arlan Setiawan, Division G Governor, District 51 Club President from Surabaya.

President Paul's opening message, "Have a Heart, Share Your Heart, Change Your Heart (if there is a need to) felt like a delightful taster of some of the more inspiring messages the world will be receiving this holiday season.

Noteworthy:

- DTM Arlan Setiawan, Division G Governor, District 51 Club President from Surabaya, shared about the Toastmasters movement in Surabaya, and the phenomenal growth he's helping to foster with many of the clubs he oversees being under 6 months old.

-Cheryl received her First Timer ribbon and won the award for "Best Speaker of the Evening" after engaging members with her first presentation, "Who is Cheryl" accompanied by a slideshow of pictures of Tasmania.

-Marie and Melanie respectively explored Vocal Variety (P6) in "A Wedding, A Divorce, and A Love Affair" and "The Wonder of 'Wow!'"

-President Paul earned his Competent Communicator status by weaving his personal experiences of succeeding through odds, obstacles and challenges. As his account unfolded of his struggles as a student, the audience was filled with respect for his professional training and career achievements over the past decade. He proudly received his CC award from Division D Governor, DTM Quek Geok Cheng.

-Each of the guest and regular evaluators delivered strong, constructive criticism and suggestions for improvements, with Mr. G. Ang walking away with "Best Evaluator" for his smooth delivery without notes. Also of interest: Evaluator Rosalind used her speaker's name as an acronym to organize her points.

-Kelvin continued the Successful Club Series by encouraging members to look beyond the club with his "Memoirs of an Old Bird." This message was taken further by Division D Governor Quek, who affirmed that our club was an established club that has shown growth through almost a decade, and highlighted that Toastmasters International offered numerous outlets and avenues for continued personal and professional development in communication and leadership skills.

Time-keeping--111th Meeting (28 September, 2009)

The time-keeper plays an important function during club meetings, as I found out tonight.

As speakers present their prepared speeches, the timer signals with colored-cards to help speakers with tracking and pacing--green, amber then red. A buzzer or bell is also sounded at this time. Upon hearing the ring, the speaker has 30 seconds to wrap up in order to be eligible for voting as best speaker of the evening. The timer then notes the time clocked. Quite a responsibility, you may well imagine (especially during contests)!

The evening was a celebration of sorts--three new members presented their first speeches (Project One-Introducing Yourself) with catchy titles as "The Most Important Thing in My Life (Poh Li)" and "All About Myself (Evangeline)." Jason bagged the best speaker by masterfully weaving his three greatest passions and six hobbies into a self-introduction while challenging the notion, "What's wrong with Jack-of-all-trades?"

Other highlights--

President Paul sold us on "Sales" as being the best career with three 'R's: renumeration, recognition and reward.

Natural humourist Kelvin educated us on how to "Evaluate to Motivate" with a french-flavoured menu. He reminded us that excellent evaluations functioned as a mirror, to amplify the speaker's good points and served to empower and positively impact the speaker to enrich his next speech. Kelvin dished out A-C-E: Attitude, Compassion and Experience.

The evening ended on a high note when Area D1 Governor and Immediate Past President Ann brought in table-topics with a twist involving two pairs- one to describe a picture, the other to draw. With a lot of laughs along the way, this experience served to show that table topics can be creatively stimulating, engaging and fun while stressing the importance of the need to communicate effectively. This surprise brought an enjoyably varied, warm and educational night to a close.

Melanie, VPPR of Radin Mas Toastmasters Club, has experienced Toastmasters' to be great for networking, exploring how to be an effective communicator and building leadership skills. Each meeting draws interesting people with all sorts of hobbies and careers, bragging rights, serious as well as light-hearted laugh-till-your-belly-hurts moments.

During our regular club meetings, Mike has often shared about his humble roots. We do not hear about the hard work and long hours Mike puts into practicing for speeches, but we learn alongside each wonderful idea or flop. His Toastmasters experience of building on skills and techniques for communicating effectively with practice, leveraging on the strategies and skills shared by other distinguished speakers is common around the world. Mike has mastered how to deliver a constructive speech evaluation that affirms the speaker's strengths and encourages the speaker to look at other aspects of livening and polishing for a more effective speech.

What is it?
Radin Mas Toastmaster's Speechcraft program presents fundamentals of public speaking by experienced Toastmasters in an atmosphere of a Toastmasters club meeting. It's a great way to see, first-hand, what Toastmasters is all about while training to become the speaker & leader that you want to be!

How It Works
The Speechcraft program is an intensive course that is held every Monday over a period of 4 weeks. The weekly 2 and a half hour meeting consist of a highly structured training program that delves into the fundamentals of speaking and presentation.

In addition to keynote speeches by experienced Toastmasters, you will be assigned a senior member who will function as a Speechcraft advisor over the length of the course. As an added benefit, you will also receive a full year of membership (along with other perks) to the Toastmasters Educational Program where you can further hone your public speaking skills among likeminded individuals!

Number of Participants
In order to ensure that you get the best and fullest attention of our Speechcraft advisors and trainers, we have limited the number of participants. So hurry and reserve a place because seats are limited!

Rules for Fees
As a chapter of the not-for-profit Toastmasters International, the Radin Mas Toastmasters charges a nominal fee of S$180 (S$170 for Passion Card holders) to cover program expenses (materials, refreshments, room rental). Your course fee includes a full year of membership along with other perks.

When speaking...

Have you ever had your mind go blank at the last minute?

Have you ever ended up blabbering some incoherent nonsense?

Have you ever wished for a way to speak off-the-cuff sans the tears and sweat?

Many careers and occupations require the mastery of impromptu speaking but the journey to acquire this invaluable skillset is mostly arduous. Even for our own Toastmasters, practice time at the lectern can often end in shambles and deafening slience.

However, like most skills, knowing the "how" will aid in shaving years off your learning curve.

Here are some tricks by veteran Toastmaster Rajiv Ramaratnam of Quincy, Massachusetts for taking the terror out of Table Topics – or any other impromptu speaking situation:

Avoid apologies or comments like, “I’m not good at this,” or, “Gee, I don’t have a clue.” Don’t say anything that lowers the audience’s expectations.
Buy yourself time. Repeat the question or topic. “What do I think of the soccer World Cup?” Take a deep breath and speak slowly and clearly. Or include a comment like, “I never considered that question until now.” Be careful not to overdo this step, however.
Stay informed. It’s impossible to be knowledgeable about every topic under the sun, but a little preparation goes a long way. Stay on top of current local, national and international news. Be familiar with issues in politics and the economy, new trends, the latest movies, plays and books. To find information, use the Internet, newspapers, the bookstore or library, and listen to TV or radio talk shows.
Create a repository of topics. Build a list of topics that you are comfortable speaking about, and try to use them whenever possible. Also keep them in mind when it is your turn to be the Topics master.
Segue from the presented topic to one you can talk about. For example, “I don’t have an opinion on the World Cup in soccer, but let me tell you about my recent mountain climbing experience…” Be careful not to make this one a habit though.
Use your imagination. During Table Topics, you develop the necessary skills to think on your feet. For this, a fertile imagination is vital. You could use your imagination to create a tall tale, contemplate the future or formulate an opinion on any topic.
Connect with the audience. Be passionate – don’t come across as a lifeless data spewer. The more alive and original you are, the better your performance will be. Use eye contact and meaningful gestures. Sell your idea to the audience!
Think of it as a mini-speech. It’s more than an answer to a question. While you may not know the exact answer to the question, you probably have enough information, thoughts, feelings and opinions to develop a two-minute speech. Try to develop an opening, body and conclusion.
Practice! You have a list of topics and you have an opinion on all of them. Now, practice as if you were asked to speak on one of them. Sooner or later, one of those topics may surface at a Table Topics session near you.
