Hey all,
My wife and I are planning a trip to the Great Lakes region in August for 3 weeks. We have identified a few places that we want to visit but would appreciate some advice on ways to fill out the trip. So far our trip is shaping up like this:
3 nights in Chicago
Travel through Northern Indiana visiting Amish Country
Indiana State Fair Indianapolis
Detroit (Henry Ford Museum)
Niagra falls (2 nights)

In terms of interests we like a mixture of scenic drives, like to experience rural side of America perhaps stay in small but vibrant local towns. In previous roadtrips we have really enjoyed local fairs, festivals and particularly any with music. Have planned to stop by the Indiana State fair, any others, perhaps smaller local festivals?

Would love some advice on Detroit, definitely want to visit Henry ford museum, is there anything else worth considering there?

Any help would be much appreciated,

thanks,
John

I apologize to those who tried to answer my questions on my last thread. Other posters started arguing with each other, and my thread was closed before I got to comment or ask my other questions.

Taking the advice from an earlier post I have decided to take I-40 instead of I-10 (cooler weather, prettier and I feel a little safer). Since I'm traveling on my own with my little dog I'm wondering if I should try to stay on the major interstates it Texas as long as they are not too far out of the way. I'm under the impression that a lot of the highways in TX go through small towns so you have to slow down and go through a few lights with each town you approach.

Does anyone have advice about taking the 84? Are there a lot of stops to go through? I thought about staying on the I-40 to Amarillo then the I-27 South. There is a small section I would have to travel on the 84 then catch the I-20 to I-35 south to Temple. I know that adds some mileage, but it seems to me that the speed limit would be more consistant and save time. If I follow the route according to mapping websites I would catch the 84 outside of Albuquerque and stay on it most of the way except for a short time on the I-20.

Dear all.

Many thanks in advance for any advice on the following route. I've done my research online but wanted an expert opinion from some of this excellent forum's members. We are three young adults from London, England. We arrive in Los Angeles at the beginning of July and fly out exactly 3 weeks later. We have hired a convertible car which must be picked up and dropped off at LAX. Our (very early stages) planned route is as follows:

LA - San Fran - Napa Valley - Crater Lake - Yellowstone - Salt Lake City - Arches National Park - Monument Valley - Zion/Bryce Canyon - Grand Canyon - Las Vegas - LA

This is about ~3500 miles, but we have all three of us insured to drive.

Firstly, is this route too much? The other potential route is to go to Yosemite from SF/Napa and skip Yellowstone, then after Yosemite head across country to Salt Lake City and continue the route form there. This would save the miles going up to Wyoming etc:

LA - San Fran - Napa Valley - Yosemite - Mammoth Lakes - Salt Lake City - Arches National Park - Monument Valley - Zion/Bryce Canyon - Grand Canyon - Las Vegas - LA

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Josh

Hi guys!
My sisters and i are trying to plan a road trip down to FL and back
Friday June 28- Saturday July 6th

We want to make the best of our trip by stopping at all the major sightseeing/ tourist attractions on our way
we're all young so constant driving wont be a bother to us. maybe we could take one route down and then another on our way back to see different things.
we would like to see landscapes waterscapes bridges mountains gardens volcanoes stuff like that postcard places... no museums or exhibits shops/ restaurants/ bars that stuff isnt on our list this time
please help plan the trip! i've read all the threads on this topic and came up with the below list. But everything is vague
i need 3 or 4 best places to see each way! if you say Savannah, please tell me what to do there :)
and what do i do for places like Virginia beach? or myrtle beach? just put in virginia beach on the gps? or is there a specific location to see? i ask because 2 years ago we took a trip to the grand canyon... and i did a lousy job planning it... i mean we did see the canyon but we missed out on the "spots" that people rave about. They're never gonna let me live it down :(

Washington DC (i know this is contrary to our sightseeing list/ but if its on out way we'd like to stop quickly and take a pic in front of the white house =D)
Virginia Beach
Myrtle beach, SC
Williamsburg
Busch gardens, Virginia
Savannah, GA
Charleston
Outter banks kitty hawk NC
Swamp fox south of border NC/SC line
Assateague Island
Annapolis
Skyway bridge across tampa bay

We would love to go the route that goes through Cleveland, Chicago, Iowa and eventually get to Mt. Rushmore. I would like to head south from there and end up in Phoenix. We never took a road trip like this before and are very excited about it. We have plenty of time and plan on lodging when needed. We are starting on Long Island, NY and are at square one in the planning process. Any advice on routes or anything else would be so helpful. Thanks.

Hi RTA!

First I would like to thank you profoundly for this great website and informational resource.

Second, I would like to have some feedback on the plans that me and my girlfriend have made for this summer.

Is our trip doable in the timeframe we have chosen? (Late June to early July, about 21 days before we have to be at our destination in order to fly back home to Sweden)
We want to spend two nights in LA before going up to SF along the coast. This leaves about 19 days to get to SC.

We have also understood that we should plan for several more non-driving days in order to enjoy attractions etc.

Should we take another route between Grand Canyon and Chicago, or is "Route 66" the preferred way?

We fully understand that we might be a bit too ambitious, but we are only young and foolish once in a lifetime.

I wish you all a great week and summer.

Driving from Midtown Manhattan to the Mohonk Mountain House over July 4th weekend, I decided that it would be fun and interesting to take a historic tour of the Hudson Valley, stopping in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown (Philipsburg Manor, Cemetery, Old Dutch Church, Lyndhurst, etc) then continuing along the George W. Perkins Memorial Drive to Bear Mountain Observatory and on to Goshen to the Historic Track and Harness Racing Museum, then Washingtonville to the Brotherhood Winery (oldest in America?) and continuing on to New Paltz and Historic Huguenot before winding up at towards Mohonk.

HOWEVER... I was wondering if this is in fact the most scenic route compared to the Taconic Byway on the opposite side of the Hudson??

I've mapped the following route and adjusted our directions via Google Maps, but would greatly appreciate some quick feedback on taking this drive versus the Taconic Bywy across the river?

Thanks to one and all who take the time to offer their thoughts!
