I used to highlight one hot deal (IMHO, of course) for each day.. but let’s face it, they aren’t as hot as they used to be – nothing new if you follow Canadian deal sites such as RFD and Canucks.

But… today, they once again have the Dell UltraSharp 2709W 27” LCD monitor supporting 1920×1200 pixel resolution, all the input connections (HDMI, DVI, and yes – displayport) as well as 5 USB connections, an S-PVA panel, and so much more.

I wrote previously about reviews of the Dell 2709W so if you use the search feature on the top to look for my previous articles and reviews of the Dell 2709W, you’ll see that it’s been $549 and $599 so far this year.

It’s at $599 today only (until 6:00 a.m. EDT Saturday morning)… as I’ve mentioned before, I have actually used this monitor for over a year. OK, not this exact one, the 2707WFP… summary ? I love it.

BTW, Dell is experimenting with lightbox display of their promos (mistake, Mike Dell) and it’s causing so many XML errors that they have a “click here if this page isn’t displaying” option. The above link should work ok.

J’aime bien AVG…

I wish to have non-CAL users access sites in a separate site collection on the same Sharepoint Server. The non-CAL users would not have access to the MOSS portal site, no My Sites, etc. They would only have access to the separate site collection.

In this latter scenario, am I still within the licensing requirements? My 100 users for whom I have CALs would have access to everything. The non-CAL users would have access only to site collections and no MOSS portal site access.

It annoys me when MSFT reps say that licensing is “simple” and “straight forward”… sorry; not. I spend 15% of my time trying to explain licensing to my C-level executives… (and I have a hard time grasping all the finer elements of MSFT licensing soup myself… after 10+ years working with MS enterprise software.)

At the time, it was a murky fit if you already had Adsense running, since it involved an option to insert their code to deliver ads in a contextual manner (adjusting ads based on the content of your page)…

At the time they offered 2 types of ad integration for website publishers; either through a fixed keyword method (where you chose a keyword to indicate products to be placed from their pool of advertisers) and a contextual method where they would place ads based on your page content. At the time, Adsense was the biggest (perhaps only significant?) player in the contextual text ad game, so it was hard to really give up the “sure-fire” Adsense revenue to experiment with Chitika. I did try it with the specific keyword method, but their product advertiser range was quite limited – mainly electronics; and as such it didn’t work well with our non-electronics based sites.

That all changed around a year ago, and now they have a great advertising model, where their JavaScript-based ad code only appears to visitors arriving from a search engine. Basically their ad code recognizes the search string that your visitor used on the referring search engine, and then Chitika displays relevant ads based on that particular keyword. It’s not purely contextual, and therefore can be used in tandem with Google Adsense – the latter program specifically disallows for the use of concurrent contextual advertising spots.

This way, it’s only your visitors who arrive from search engines who see the Chitika ads, and you get paid per click that your visitors do on the ads. The payouts are quite decent, and it’s fairly uninstrusive for your visitor base.

Congrats to Chitika who just reached 50,000 publishers! If you own a website, I highly recommend you try out Chitika and get a few extra dollars flowing your way.

Now on to an interesting domain name sale over on eBay. The name denial.com auction ended with 49 bids at $6100… a pretty good deal, in my opinion, for both buyer and seller. I’m thinking it’s a great generic name that can have a wide range of applications – my first thought is to develop a portal for self-help.. or perhaps a news site about politicians and/or lawyers

It seems like a legitimate sale – although we’ll have to watch the Whois information for the changes and who the new buyer is. This is one of the rarer high value domain sales that take place on eBay; we’re used to seeing these type of transactions over at SEDO:

I don’t think that MSFT is unhappy with the affiliate model, rather it’s most probably a rebranding strategy (Bing it, you’ll see)…

Office Live was pretty much MSFT’s first foray into SaaS cloud computing targeting small and medium businesses that were (for the most part) already exploring online tools like Google Docs.

It’s important to note that these errors (on a Dell Latitude D620 with 2GB of memory) were on a dial-up modem connection although I doubt that was part of the error.

I found some potential advice over at the Windows Live Messenger Live Spaces blog which suggests doing some adjustments to the WLM proxy settings. The problem is that the advice provided seems to presume that WLM can be started normally in order to access the Tools menu ; this, in my case, wasn’t possible; I couldn’t even start Windows Live Messenger!

Those very instructions also suggest disabling the Windows Vista Auto Tuning Networking feature using the command line and entering “netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled“.

I made that change (using Run as Administrator, of course) and attempted to reconnect using Windows Live Messenger. After about 90 seconds of the rotating WLM graphic… no dice. I got the 81000306 error once again.

The instructions at the WLM Live Space say to revert the disabling of Auto Network Tuning using the “netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal” command… so this is what I just did.

Amazingly, after REVERTING to Auto Network Tuning BACK on, I was able to connect using Windows Live Messenger. So, if this topsy turvy method of disabling Auto Network Tuning, and then reactivating it as I instructed above, worked for you – please do leave a comment below!

Things aren’t looking good (yet again) for Yahoo! … but sorry, Geocities was a horrible buy (IMHO) …. perhaps the idea was for Geocities to be folded into the Yahoo! suite as a sort of MySpace.

Regardless, I always despised Geocities and MySpace for the same reason: Web 0.1 designs … it was the equivalent of hosting your company site on Tripod (errkkk.)

Until 23h59 PT (Pacific Time) tonight on eBay.com you can create auction listings for a flat fee of just $0.15! Depending on how much your starting price is for your item, that means you can save up to $3.85 per listing – or double that if you list in 2 categories.

It’s been several months since the last eBay listing promotion, and while this isn’t a “free listing day” you can save quite a bit of money on the listing fees if you have a few items to put up on sale.

The promotion is good on both eBay US (eBay.com) and eBay Canada but if you list on eBay Canada, you have to get your listing in before 23:59 EASTERN time… as opposed to the 23h59 PACIFIC time for the .com site!

You can see the details about the 15 cent listing promotion here, but to summarise:

- must have DSR (detailled seller rating) of 4.5 or more, or no DSR at all;

- The following listing types / categories are excluded from the promotion: Fixed Price listings, Media listings (including Books, Music, Movies & DVDs and Vide Games), note: Video Game systems are included in the promotion. eBay Motors Passenger Vehicles, Motorcycles, Power Sports, Other Vehicles, Motors Local Market, International, Live Auction, Professional Services, Real Estate, Ad Format and Store Inventory listings.

TweetDeck 0.25 was released and the online upgrade from 0.21.5 was quite smooth – actually seamless.

One of the most notable features I noticed is being able to select if your tweet will be posted to Twitter, Facebook, or both. This is a most welcome feature as I offer Twitter several times during the day and night, but don’t necessarily want to integrate those Tweets as part of my FB status…

Here’s a list of TweetDeck 0.25 feature updates from the official changelog:

The news was first released to Canadian Tire partners and affiliates (see full letter after the break) citing concerns surrounding the cost of shipping goods vs. the margins that they have to deal with.

I think this is a big mistake. If CT indeed does decide to revamp their online presence to only be a showcase to get people into their bricks and mortar stores (even if those B&M stores are “within a 10-15 minute drive of 90% of the Canadian population” it marks a major step backwards in terms of retailing trends. Sure, I am one of those folks who double-dipped at the CanadianTire.ca store by ordering a clothes drying rack at 50% off (for roughly $7.99) and applied a free shipping coupon code… what happened? Of course, I wasn’t at home when the shipment arrived, so I went to pick it up at a Canada Post outlet near my home. How much do you think it cost CTC to ship that $7.99 drying rack to me?

I revealed this news about the closing of their online store to a few industry colleagues who understood the underlying premise but agreed with me that it was a poor decision to shutter the entire online operation.

Apparently, as of January 30th, Canadian Tire will only sell “gift cards” online.

One can only hope that they will (at least) maximize the promise of online retailing while limiting transactions to their b&m outlets. They could, theoretically, do this by maintaining all the social / crowdsourcing aspects of their site (user reviews and ratings, etc.) and integrating seamless in-store inventory verification (make it real-time!).

That won’t be easy. Don’t have me surfing your online “store” showing availability at a bricks and mortar Canadian Tire outlet within a “10-15 minute drive” of my home to ultimately arrive at the store and see that it’s OOS (out of stock) or unfindeable, or whatever. Bait and switch will not work with the millennial / Gen-Y crowd.

Personally, I think that CT will have to return to an online delivery model in the near future if they wish to survive. Just have the realities of real world delivery reflected in shipping cost. Sure, if I wish to pay $20 shipping for a $7.99 drying rack, I may think twice. Perhaps I will opt for free ISPU (in-store pick-up) for free.

But please do maintain your online store.

Oh, and stop paying for user “reviews.” (another story, another time.)

As promised, the official news from Canadian Tire:

Dear Affiliates,

Over the past few years, canadiantire.ca has experienced exceptional growth in traffic, making it one of the busiest e-commerce sites in the country. Our research indicates that the overwhelming majority of the traffic to the site is focused on products that are heavily researched, but not necessarily suitable for home delivery (patio sets, tires, etc). This, coupled with the fact that we have an extensive store network with 473 stores located within a 10-15 minute drive of 90% of the Canadian population, led us to the decision to discontinue direct home delivery and to deploy our resources to development of capabilities and features that will significantly enhance the online experience for the millions of customers that visit canadiantire.ca every month.

To continue to deliver on our commitment to provide customers with the best retail site experience, we will continue to invest resources to dramatically enhance the site. In addition to re-launching the site with a brand new look, new navigational functionality and even more ‘how-to’ information for our customers, we will also be introducing in-store pick-up of online orders in a couple of markets later this spring.
Effective January 29, 2009 online sales of product (excluding gift cards) from Canadian Tire’s website, www.canadiantire.ca, will be suspended. The eFlyer program will continue without interruption.

You are welcome to leave Canadian Tire creative banners up on your sites but need to be aware that as of January 30, 2009, commissions can be earned on gift card sales ONLY. Any Canadian Tire creative banners that speak to free shipping codes or purchasing products (other than gift cards) will be deleted from the Linkshare Image Inventory on January 29, 2009. A reminder will be sent to you on January 30, 2009 asking you to review your site to ensure that the Canadian Tire creative banners reflect this change.
We appreciate your understanding in this matter and look forward to working with you in 2009.

Regards,
The Canadian Tire Online Team
