Charlotte’s travel illustration is busily capturing her community and far beyond! Her portrayal of buildings, European landmarks, and quaint urban imagery always carries feelings of warmth, laughter, and the carefree forgetfulness one would experience on vacation or as they say in the UK, holiday! Today, I am honored to feature the work of this British illustrator and 2012 Sketchbook participant!

No photo can truly capture all of the wonderful line work, detail, and scenery contained in ‘Travel With Me,’ Vallance’s 2012 SBP or ‘Down Your Street’ which is the title of Charlotte’s 2011 project! You simply have to hold them in your hands (as I did in the Brooklyn Art Library) to be in awe of the workmanship! After viewing them, I felt as if I had strolled through the streets of Amsterdam, snapped a tourist picture at Windsor Castle, and hurried through one of the busy market places depicted in her projects! This is a taste of a Dream-Come-True as my wife and I have always longed to visit England! Now, more than ever, we feel the need, thanks to the wonderful work of this travel illustrator!! Come journey the world with her through her art!!

I am so happy for Shane, Steven, Sara, Eli, Caitlin, Chris, and the rest of the Art House Co-op!!

I’m Charlotte and I love to illustrate.

If asked, I would say I’m a travel illustrator. I feel a need to document places I’ve been as well as inspiring and interesting things I see along the way. My preferred method of choice to do so is via my sketchbook. (My camera is a good back up, just in case).

Through my Sketchbook Project I try to put across a sense of travel, of moving around. I love views of streets, buildings – the architecture draws me in! It’s the little details that make an image for me, this I do through a line drawing, or maybe by introducing a pop of colour.

Sometimes my sketches and drawings make it into a watercolour illustration. Sometimes they go further and I chose them for a silkscreen print. This Sketchbook actually inspired my ‘(Delft) Blue’ book, which I printed at the end of 2011.

I am a fan of tea and cake.

Joshua’s sketchbook is probably the only project that I just happened upon. I either had prior knowledge of their work or was head hunting for new finds, when I chose the remainder of my top 25 artists. But what really caught my attention, while casually surfing ArtHouseCoop.com was this line in Josh’s profile wording “I have been drawing since I first picked up a plastic sword and screamed ‘Thundercats Ho!’ before I started school.” To this day, his project still amazes me!!!!!

Joshua Dease is the perfect poster boy for my term #CreativeAtHeart! His work displays immense skill, careful precision, and out-of-this-world imagination. I couldn’t put his project down when I viewed it in Brooklyn back in April! Each page held such detail, compelling story telling, originality, and mixed media of sorts! I loved the way he used vintage pictures, sheets of note paper, and packaging tape to laminate different areas of the project. (I too used to use this technique back in my graffiti days lol). Great job Joshua, I am now one of your biggest fans!!

I have been drawing as far back as I can remember, learning how to draw something and doing it over and over again. I spent most of my life wanting to be a comic book artist. That was the plan until my senior year of high school when I became a Christian and felt led into church ministry. Foolishly, I assumed that entering ministry, meant leaving drawing behind. After graduating from college with a Religion degree, moving to my hometown with my wife, and planting a church from scratch with some friends… I was facing a lot of uncertainty and doubt. Sometimes it was hard just to get out of bed. I began to draw a diary comic that covered every day for the span of a year. Now that the project is complete, I have continued drawing these diary themed comics dealing with my faith and attempting to live that out loud. I try to draw in a very basic style. My hope is that when people read my comics they think, “I can do that,” whether it is the artwork or the lifestyle itself being depicted.

Currently I am Associate Pastor of Vintage Faith Church in Chiefland, FL. Since that gig doesn’t pay, I am also a diversion case manager for at risk youth.

I absolutely love the project I am highlighting this week! Vicky Morse’s “This is a Sketchbook” is jam packed with whimsy, imagination, and spirit that can not be broken! High above The Sketchbook Project or the Atlantic is a bond of friendship that Vicky and I have formed through our infamous 3:30 am, March 30th Broadcast, LIVE from London!

Vicky’s project combines her textile background and love for sketching into a-never-seen-before style. But layered beneath the swirls, kaleidoscopes, vibrant stitching, and adorable birds lies her spirit of courage and determination! In her span of thirty years, Vicky has had many broken bones thus coining herself accidental. In fact, she was recovering from major hip surgery when she created this sketchbook! In light of these facts, you can see why this project captures much more then fleeting thoughts. Each scene was motivational for Vix, each rain drop a sorrow encountered, and each word a declaration of hope- that she will not quit or be beaten by anything life throws in her path!! Keep traveling your journey Vicky! You are not just a dreamer- you are an example of what creativity truly means!

Hi… I’m Vix, an interior designer by day and wanna-be illustrator and general creative at all other times. Even at work I’m lost when I don’t have a sketchbook and pen by my side. The sketchbook project has been the perfect opportunity for me to keep that creativity going, especially as I am recovering from major hip surgery again and have been stuck at home in London all day for several months. My sketchbook goes everywhere with me, which is why I chose ‘this is a sketchbook’ and took this year’s project as an opportunity to use it as a continuous story and consistent style which combines my love of pattern, textiles and sewing to tell about my year as a bride.

I’m so thankful for the internet and all the visual inspiration it brings, but no digital image can ever truly convey the physical form of art. Two weeks ago, in Williamsburg, gasps of astonishment rang through the air when the cover opened of “The Art of Vacations” by Matt Robinson! Oh the detail. Oh the stippling. Oh the time. Ohhhh, that landmark is from NYC!!

A few months ago, when I was searching for my Top 25 Sketchbook Project Artists, I came across Matt’s work on Twitter. Of course I was instantly hooked on his individuality and attention to detail- I just had to have him on my Read List and feature his work on My Ink Pad!! Now that I have held this particular project in my hands, I will suggest even louder… ask for The Art of Vacations in the windy city or at any of the other tour stops coming soon to a location near you!!

After years of attempting to discover my style, I have developed one that I finally feel happy with having produced several pieces in a series called “The Art of Vacations” over a 24-month period.

I use stencils to apply acrylics as a background, and form the picture with an ink pen using a pointillism style. My inspiration comes from travelling in North America, Europe and Asia and the cities and countries I have visited, basing my artwork on photographs taken at each location.

When I read about The Sketchbook Project and saw the theme of Transatlantic, an idea immediately formed in my mind and I signed up. Initially The Sketchbook Project was a challenge, but having completed my first book I am already full of ideas on what to produce for next years entry.

It was such a fantastic night of inspiration! I viewed about 30 projects myself- most of them from my Read List and then a bunch of random ones, thanks to the new “pick one + get a mystery project” feature Art House has implemented. My highlights of the 14th were live broadcasts from Joel Jelinski and Karin Grandstrand; chatting with Shane, Caitlin, Eli, Steven and Sarah, Chris, and the rest of the Art House Family; finally meeting Sarah Ryan and Koosje Koene; and enjoying the night with the love of my life, Gina!

Enjoy some snaps of my favorite projects! It looks like I will have to travel to the Library soon for round two, as I still have about 5 from my top 25 that I was unable to get my hands on throughout the night!

It seems so long ago that first I started jotting down names of artists who’s project I wanted to view in Williamsburg, Brooklyn at the Kick Off for The Sketchbook Project, 2012 World Tour!! Since then my Read List, has expanded well beyond anything handwritten into a fully designed list of my top 25 tour participants complete with detailed artist features and links to connect with them.

Today, I am proud to present you with my Read List!! Download the pdf, print it out, load it onto your iPhone or iPad, and grab a bunch of friends before you head out the door to Williamsburg this Saturday night. As I learned last year, that massive wall of sketchbooks at the Brooklyn Art Library can be just a little intimidating, so don’t get tongue tied by having this list in hand when you see it! Oh and be sure to ask a friendly librarian for Rob Jelinski’s A Book Called… Forever before you leave the venue .

Click here to view or download the Read List!

I’ve loved drawing and stories ever since I was a young boy!! When I was little, there seemed to be no greater form of expression than drawing and no greater vehicle for my imagination than a good story. To this day, they are still two of my favorite pastimes. In “Uncharted Waters – Mythology,” Sarah Ryan morphs myths and story-tales into visual wonderlands, fitting for murals of vast proportions! Yet they are all pocket sized and created exclusively for The Sketchbook Project, 2012 World Tour!!

Ryan, a first time participant of the Sketchbook Project, masterfully uses her creativity and skill set to depict tall tales of oral tradition from every creed and tongue. Some of my favorites are: The Cover (Inside and Outside), Kappas, Leviathans, Shen, and Charybdis (IF Round.) I envision these cascading the walls of a Children’s Library or a book land in a Barnes and Noble store filling young hearts with awe as the read away the hours. Maybe Sarah’s current employer, the Upper Darby Sellers Library, located in Philadelphia, will consider this idea for it’s own reading space! (Hint, hint)

While Sarah Ryan’s work is only starting to receive the recognition it deserves, I can assure you, she is headed for greatness! After many readers enjoy her radiant illustrations, ”Uncharted Waters – Mythology” will undoubtedly be one of the Brooklyn Art Library’s best guarded treasures!

Sarah Ryan is an artist and illustrator based in Philadelphia. She is fueled by ice cream and imagination, and inspired by comic books, vintage advertisements, and fairy tales. Her favorite mediums are watercolor, acrylic ink, prismacolor turquoise pencils and micron pens.

When she is not drawing, Sarah also works in the awesome children’s room in Upper Darby Sellers Library. It’s an endless source of picture books and stories that influence her style and provide her with new ideas.

I love the playful imagery of my new friend, Koosje Koene! Her style is creative, fun-loving, and energetic. Her work stands out from the crowd as it holds the same visual impact in full color or black and white- something the majority of artists can’t do! I first came across her work on the ArtHouseCo-op’s website and have been a fan ever since!!

Millie’s Marvelous Monsters (Koosje’s 2012 Sketchbook Project) is intriguing from cover to cover! Almost all of us can relate to the fear of monsters hiding in our closet and the slight antagonistic torment from an older sibling that heightens those fears. The ink drawn illustrations builds upon this story line with careful line drawings and the technique of hatching and cross-hatching, comprising the perfect amalgam!

I can’t wait to hold this project in my hand on Opening Day, April 14th, and to meet her in person as I just found out that she will be visiting NYC for the first time!!! See below to gain more info on Koosje’s trip from the Netherland’s to NYC and her upcoming giveaway!!
