The All-Star break is here and we get a three day rest from what has been shaping up to be a rough season. A quick look at the progress tracker shows that the 2009 Mets are underperforming compared to the 2008 team. How do you feel about it? What trades should Omar try to make? Do you think the Mets have a chance to come back and make the playoffs in the second half of the season? Use this post as a sounding board.

This lesson shows how to create an image gallery using CCK with ImageField, Views and ImageCache. CCK is used to create a new "image" content type that contains an upload field for images courtesy of ImageField. ImageCache is used to crop and resize the uploaded images. Views is used to display gallery page and an accompanying RSS Feed.

The premium version of this lesson is encoded at the full 1024x768 resolution as originally recorded.

I have been following JS-Kit since their early days when they simply offered a drop in comments and rating system for sites that didn’t already have those sorts of features. I haven’t used the service because all the platforms (WordPress, Drupal, Movable Type, Blogger) I work with to build communities offer good comments and ratings either via core functionality or add-ons. Times have changed and “good” comment functionality may not be good enough if you’re serious about building community and capturing the breadth of discussion related to your content. JS-Kit has announced the beta of a new service called Echo that aims to provide much better comment functionality for the web as it exists today.

There was a time when your comment form for a post asked for name, email and website link as a way to establish the identity of an individual. Times have changed. Spam has become more prevalent in comments and we also have a multitude of new ways to register identity on the web. Gravatar, Google Friend Connect and Facebook Connect and others allow people to port their identity to different websites as long as those websites support the various identity services. The key phrase in that last sentence is “as long as…” If website owners want to continue to offer the richest experience to their visitors they they need to keep up with the latest services that offer web identities. They also need to know which services are popular enough to warrant integration in their websites. And finally there needs to be a reasonably simple way for site owners to integrate with their chosen platform. It’s a lot to stay informed about.

The way content, and the conversation about content, spreads has changed as well. There was a time when people wrote their own post and linked back to the original post (trackbacks) or they saved a link to their account on Delicious. Now people link to and discuss content in a wide variety of places. Links find their way to Digg, FriendFeed, Facebook, Google Reader and other popular web destinations. Conversation also occurs in those places as well. If you started the conversation it might be nice to know that it’s happening and share it with the other visitors to your site. There’s also the issue of content and influence as currency. If you publish content that attracts many people you probably want others who are interested in you to know how much discussion occurs around your content. And perhaps the level of discussion you generate will help to make someone more interested in what you’re publishing.

Given this new reality of conversation around web content, JS-Kit is offering a simpler solution for website owners with their Echo plaftorm. Echo allows users who are commenting to register their identity using a variety of the most popular services. Beyond registering their identity this feature also allows the visitor to simultaneously share their contribution on those other services as well. That’s a feature that can help expose the discussion (for better or worse) to a new group of people.

Echo also offers a pretty simple way for visitors to continue to follow the conversation via email and RSS.

Those features make Echo very good and provide functionality that is similar to other custom comment solutions such as IntenseDebate and Disqus. Other promised features that make this service sound exciting are the real-time updates and capture from different sources around the web. Echo promises to update the comment portion of your content as new feedback rolls in. This turns the comments into something like a chat room. There’s also the promise of aggregation. Echo will capture discussion and links from various places on the web and bring it back into the comment stream on your site.

On the first glance the Echo service by JS-Kit appears to be able to solve some real problems for people who want robust conversation around their web content. It also solves an identity problem. I don’t want people to have to sign up for my websites to comment. But I would like to know who they are and give them the convenience of using the service that they like the most. The platform looks promising but the devil is in the details. Solid performance is key. It’s a disaster when you add something like this to your website and it fails to perform. It can slow the loading of your site and kill the conversation that it aimed to enhance. If JS-Kit does come through with solid performance then Echo could change the way that website owner manage their comments and community.

© Robert J.
Better Goverment Is More Expensive

On inauguration day President Obama exclaimed that the argument over the role of the government isn't about size but rather the quality of the results. It was a very clever way of saying, "Yes, government is going to get bigger for the next four years." Fast forward six months and I saw that the White House released a list of staff and their salaries. For the sake of comparison I chased down similar data from the Bush administration circa 2008. The overall results are posted below in the chart.
All of the numbers are up for the Obama administration but the biggest stand out is the difference in the amount of total pay which is 18% higher than it was under President Bush. One of the reasons for the total pay differential has to do with the appointment of many "czars" who tend to make salaries on the higher end of the spectrum. Looking at the raw numbers the White House now has 40 additional staffers. On the whole staffers average about $6,000 more (an 8% increase) over 2008 salaries at the White House.

You can see the full spreadsheet that I compiled with additional detailed charts here.

Sources: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/opinions/graphics/2008stafflistsalary.html, http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/Annual-Report-to-Congress-on-White-House-Staff-2009/

Google’s annoncement of a netbook operating system based on Chrome certainly made a lot of noise. Early reports focused on the negative effects the new OS would have on Microsoft. After pondering the news and reading different viewpoints I’m inclined to agree with those who think that this doesn’t hurt Microsoft.

I just recently bought a Dell netbook with the Ubuntu OS. Ubuntu has a netbook remix which looks like a very promising interface for this type of computer. I’ll let you know more once I take delivery and try it out. In any case the Chrome OS will be competing with the netbook remix as well as Windows.

There’s also a new OS for netbooks called Jolicloud that looks very promising and recently announced funding. Jolicloud may be unknown right now but they have more than a year to get the word out before Google delivers the Chrome OS.

Finally there’s the soon to be released Windows 7 which they say will be optimized for netbooks. I’ve seen universally positive reviews of Windows 7 from the early beta testers. It appears that Microsoft learned their lesson after the Vista debacle. So it’s certainly not a given that Google will crush Microsoft in this space.

There you have it. Google has three strong competitors with a good head start on them. Plus there’s the confusion related to where Google Android fits into the mix. For those reasons I think that the Google Chrome OS is far from a sure thing.

© Robert J.
How much would you pay?

Shared by Robert Safuto
The cost isn't 50 cents a day. If it were the government could simply enact a flat carbon tax of that amount per household and be done with it. The amount is beside the point in my opinion. Be it $1 a day or a $100 a day per household, how does anyone know that the money will go to actions that truly benefit the environment? How much of the tax would go to administrative costs? How much would be lost to fraud waste and abuse? How much would be invested in programs or technologies that provide no real environmental benefits?

Think about ethanol. The U.S. has spent tens of billions on ethanol and only recently figured out the inefficiencies and negative social and environmental effects of converting corn into fuel.

What’s the real cost of global warming? More to the point, how much would you — the person reading this blog — be comfortable paying to stave off the worse ravages of climate change? A hundred bucks to keep the rising seas out of your back yard? A thousand to replenish mountain snowpack? Maybe a few dollars to put more trees back in the rainforest?

Luckily, there’s no shortage of estimates of how much each individual in the United States might have to pay to curb the greenhouse emissions that spur climate change. One particularly pertinent estimate was delivered on Capitol Hill by EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson at a Senate hearing geared to send the message that, yes, the United States Congress is getting serious about tackling the problem.

As Reuters’ Jasmin Melvin wrote in this story, Jackson said it would cost the average U.S. household about 50 cents a day to fight global warming, though wealthier households would probably pay more. Even if this cost doubled, Jackson told the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, that would only be a dollar a day. Who wouldn’t pay that?

Apparently a fair number of people, according to Sen. James Inhofe, who cited a July 1 poll showing the 56 percent of Americans are unwilling to pay anything.

So what would you be willing to pay? Is a dollar a day too much? And if you shouldn’t pay, should anyone?

The capabilities of the iPhone 3Gs aka the iPhone Video should serve as a serious wake-up call to media (including podcast) hosting companies. We finally have a device that can capture good quality audio and video content, allow the user to edit the content, then upload that content to the web at decent speeds using either wifi or the 3G cell network. We’ve been waiting for this for years. As a result I’ve never been more hopeful about the prospects of truly mobile media publishing where I can create my content on the street then have it up on my website minutes later.

As it stands now you can get the rich media content you capture on the iPhone 3Gs to the web. Videos can be automatically uploaded to YouTube. Audio captured on the device can be uploaded to services such as AudioBoo. Services like these offer the benefit of easy integration with the iPhone plus format conversion, flash players and RSS feeds. Serious content producers will want to go one step further than just uploading their media to a 3rd party service. They’ll want to upload the media, get the value added features I just mentioned and have the end result published on their own website, with their own RSS feed url that also connects to an iTunes podcast directory listing. The same serious media producers will also probably want to have the original media file downloadable from the web which is something that iTunes and AudioBoo don’t offer.

The traditional role of the media host in recent years has been to provide a storage space accessible via FTP, permanent download link and some analytics. Libsyn was one of the first companies that changed the normal way of doing business in the space by offering media hosting connected to website publishing and iTunes compatible RSS feeds. Podcasting was born! Unfortunately the Libsyn web publishing interface did not progress much and most people I know still use them just for file storage and statistics. Services like WordPress.com have tackled the media publishing problem by starting with a rich web publishing tool while adding audio and video hosting as an add on.

Both WordPress.com and LibSyn have their shortcomings as tools for publishing rich media. LibSyn has the iTunes support and good statistics. WordPress.com has the nice web presence covered and flash video encoding. Both fall very short when it comes to mobile media publishing via the iPhone.

There’s a large gap in the media hosting space that doesn’t address the needs of mobile power users. An FTP interface should be a standard basic feature but there should be other options as well. Integration with the iPhone should be mandatory. Cross publishing, at the very least, a title, description and the file download link to the blog of my choice should be another. Conversion of video to the web friendly flash format should be offered as well. There’s a need for integrated flash audio players too. And of course I should have analytics that provide all the details on how my media is being consumed. There are plenty of services that offer one or more of the pieces of the puzzle but none offers all of them.

Here’s my explicit vision so there’s no confusion. I shoot a video (or record audio) on the iPhone. I do whatever I need to do editing wise then add a title, description, then upload all of it to my next generation media hosting service. The service then publishes the title, description, direct download link and flash player to the blog of my choice. The blog handles the RSS feed. So now I’ve published content in a completely mobile fashion and the media is published on my branded website without my audience having to get involved with a 3rd party website.

I think that kind of a workflow adds real value to publishers who want to really go mobile. I don’t know for sure but I think that there are a lot of them. I’m one of them. So I’ll be waiting and watching to see who steps up to serve the needs of mobile content producers who want real time, white label media publishing capabilities.

© Robert J.
My Impression Of Citi Field

I had my first trip to Citi Field last Saturday night and am ready to share my thoughts (and videos) about the Mets' new stadium.

What I Liked

It's new.

The stadium looks like a nice place as you approach it from the parking lot. Shea looked like a post-apocalyptic nightmare with all the steel and concrete. Citi Field looks pleasantly retro.

The markers for the Shea Stadium bases in the parking lot.

The Robinson Rotunda is a nice spot to enter the stadium and a good place to wait for friends. See my video.

The walkways are wider and open to the field. It's a much more airy feel. During the rain delays at Shea the tunnels would get hot, sticky and you'd feel claustrophopic. I feel better walking around and hanging out in the Citi Field walkways.

Lots of new food choices. This is one of the reasons to show up at the ballpark early. You can show up early at Citi Field and not have to hang out in the parking lot. The area behind centerfield has the food and the tables to make the pre-game experience more pleasant.

Fun for the kids. I haven't taken my kids to a game yet but when I do I'll visit Mr. Met, the dunk tank, batting cages and wiffle ball field with them.

The automatic ticket dispensers. Just swipe your credit card and your tickets purchased online at Mets.com are printed.

Bright new scoreboards with lots of information.

What I Didn't Like

The Mets memorabilia (which consists of the old apple and a few pennants) is hidden away. See my video for the location.

The place is pretty damn noisy. Maybe I've turned the corner somehow but the music behind the scoreboard was blasting.

Things are expensive. Ticket prices have gone up and so have the prices for everything else. It's no problem for a single guy but things get a little pricey for a family of four.

There are numerous obstructed views. Stick to the seats in the curve of the stadium and you should be fine. Pepsi Porch and the outfield seats can't see some portions of the outfield in the corner and near the fences.

Some other frustrating design flaws. My seat had a view of a plexiglass railing partition cutting home plate in half.

Way to many advertisements. There's an ad everywhere you look. I thought it was very distracting.

So those are some general thoughts. All in all I'm glad to have a new park. It's better than not having a new one. I just wish that the Wilpons made the stadium with a bit larger capacity and more respect for Mets history. It was only my first trip so I'm sure I'll discover some new things to like the next time around.

Okay the videos. One is embedded below but there are 13 pretty short videos that you can watch in a youtube playlist.
Freedom On The Stumble

The events of the past week in Iran have reminded many just how precious freedom is. The government of Iran offers the illusion of freedom and democracy via presidential elections. But the elections are a sham. The religious leaders (aka the mullahs) that run Iran will ultimately decide who wins. And in this case they decided that the status quo of Ahmadinejad was just fine for the Iranian people. But the people have other ideas in mind.

The opposition leader Mousavi probably wouldn't be much better than the current president of Iran. After all, he would still be a puppet of the mullahs. So in terms of a change in foreign policy towards the United States or Israel, we can't really hope for any breakthroughs. Still, the people seem to be sick of Ahamdinejad and the mullahs who decide how everything goes in Iran. The people want their votes to count and their voices to be heard. Their voices are being heard now and the price of speaking out is a high one.

The thugs of the Iranian regime have unleashed their muscle on the populace. The message is clear. The mullahs will tolerate small bit of dissent and nothing more. People outraged at the initial response to the protests have continued to press the issue for the past week, staging repeated demonstrations and general acts of defiance against the powers that be. The Iranian regime has responded in a violent matter by having their thugs beat, brutalize and murder those who oppose the official position of the state. Yet, as of today the protests still go on.

After taking in the events of the past week a few things are obvious to me. The elections in Iran are a sham and not even worth investigating. The fix is always in there. The opposition candidate wouldn't be much better than the current president so there's no reason to make him a symbol of Iranian independence. The people of Iran want democracy.

I'm under no illusions that democracy in Iran would mean great improvements in relations with the U.S. or Israel. But I think democracy would provide the people of Iran with a chance to chart a course that allows their country to re-join the community of peace loving nations. A democratic Iran may still end up with nuclear weapons. But I would bet that the threat of Iran using those weapons would be much smaller. And I also think that a democratic Iran would eliminate state support for terrorism.

I'd like to say that freedom is on the march in Iran but I don't think that's likely. The regime has a strong hold on the country and they're likely to continue to crack down until resistance appears to be futile. The people of Iran are also lacking support from the United States that is so crucial in their attempts to be free.

I have a hunch that Iranians look to their western border and see that Iraqis now at least have a vote that counts. The U.S. and our allies in toppling Saddam made that possible. President Obama has made it clear since day one of his Presidency that the U.S. is not in that business anymore. Rather than agitate for freedom and advocate regime change the U.S. will double our efforts to seek common ground with the various despots that dot the landscape of the earth. Obama has made the point loud and clear that the likes of Castro, Chavez, Kim Jong Il, Ahmadinejad and others are to be bargained with.

The new U.S. approach will certainly reduce friction in the short term, but in the long run the festering wound that is totalitarianism will continue to breed hatred, violence and poverty in the nations that house those sorts of regimes. Dissidents and true opposition leaders won't find comfort in the new "go along to get along" doctrine of the Obama administration.

And so the roll of nations that support freedom and democracy is not likely to increase anytime soon. But I salute those who fight the good fight even if they don't get the support they need from our current administration.

Wow, what a month it has been in the world of the New York Mets. We’ve had injuries. We’ve had drama. And we had a crushing loss the other night against our cross town rivals the Yankees. In this episode I break down the reaction to Luis Castillo’s dropped pop-up. And I talk about the wave of injuries the Mets have had over the past few weeks.

Twitter User Spamming Himself Crazy

Shared by Robert Safuto
This one gets filed in the "be careful what you wish for" category.

A Twitter user who has effectively spammed himself senseless reaches out to us for help. And we’re going to oblige. The only trouble is, he’s making yet another error in judgment, because my guess is this is going to make things worse.

Ryan Barr started a petition on Twitter to ask AT&T to “offer reasonable iPhone 3GS upgrade prices.” And even though it’s unlikely that AT&T cares even a little bit about this or any other petition, it’s getting some traction. Nearly 10,000 people have “signed” it.

The problem is that every time someone signs the petition it autotweets the message “Petition: AT&T to offer reasonable iPhone 3GS upgrade prices http://twitition.com/f96aq @ryanbarr,” which sends a message back to Barr and absolutely pollutes the reply stream (the only really useful way to interact with Twitter).

Anyway, here’s Barr’s message. I just signed the petition myself and I’m guessing a lot of you will, too. But don’t worry Ryan. It’ll slow down eventually, probably.

Dear TechCrunch,

My name is Ryan Barr, known on Twitter as @ryanbarr . If you may have noticed, I started a petition (or twitition) found here: http://twitition.com/f96aq .

I want out.

When I first started the petition, it was due to a rant I was having about the price of the phone. It didn’t take long for me to truly not care about the prices as much as I had. And it didn’t take much longer for the petition I started to go out of control.

At the time of this e-mail the petition just passed 9200 signatures. For each signature, a message is tweeted as follows:

“Petition: AT&T to offer reasonable iPhone 3GS upgrade prices http://twitition.com/f96aq @ryanbarr”

That’s right, 9200 @ryanbarr’s over the span of two (going on three) days. This does not include the unnecessary retweets people also make. I can no longer stand not being able to see real replies in my timeline. I have AT&T employees following me and saying stuff behind my back when I was just ranting on a site that seemed to have little activity.

I completely, COMPLETELY regret pressing the submit button. As the petition nears the 10000 mark I fear even more. As at that mark, TweetMeme will show me as a TM_10000 (@http://twitter.com/TM_10000) … the first, ever.

TechCrunch — you have the power to make businesses grow. You have the power to make or break the reputation of a new device. Please, help me find a way out of this petition. The attention I am receiving is unwanted — I just want to be able to come clear to all the signers and say, “I don’t want in this anymore. I didn’t mean for it to last this long.”

Thanks for anything and for the great reads over the longhaul.

Best Regards,
Ryan Barr

It can't get much worse than losing three straight to Pittsburgh then finding out that Jose Reyes has a torn hamstring and will miss 4 to 6 weeks. Ugh. I feel ill myself right now. Omar Minaya better be out there looking for a big pickup prior to the trading deadline. I think we're going to need the assistance in a bad way.

"In another huge blow to the Mets, Jose Reyes is expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks with a slightly torn right hamstring. The Mets in a statement described the hamstring tear as a new injury and not related to the tendinitis in his right calf and knee that landed Reyes on the DL and has sidelined him for most of the past three weeks."

McCartney to christen Citi Field

The rumors that have been flying around this week are now official. Paul McCartney will play the first concert in the history of Citi Field. Here's the official release from the Mets:

FLUSHING, N.Y., June 3, 2009 - Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Paul McCartney will perform the historic first concerts at Citi Field - the new home of the Mets - Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18.

Tickets go on sale Monday, June 15 at 10:00 A.M. ET online exclusively at www.507TIXX.com and by phone at 718-507-TIXX. These shows will be held rain or shine.

These inaugural concert events at Citi Field mark the latest in a series of landmark performances that link the beloved Beatle with New York City and the home of the Mets. Beginning with The Beatles' legendary musical christening of Shea Stadium in 1965, and continuing with McCartney's special appearance at Billy Joel's "Last Play at Shea" show that closed the stadium last year, McCartney's summer shows at Citi Field will once again mark a momentous occasion in the history of New York - and rock n' roll itself.

"I am really excited about playing Citi Field - The Beatles were the first to play at Shea Stadium and along with Billy Joel I was the last to sing at the old Shea," said Paul McCartney. "So to be the first to play this ballpark is incredible. I am really looking forward to a buzzing show."

"Every time Paul McCartney steps on a stage is a special event because of the timelessness of the music and the enthusiasm and verve that this icon gives to each performance," said Randy Phillips, President & CEO of AEG Live. "Christening Citi Field as a venue will give this concert the added weight of the historical significance of The Beatles appearance at Shea Stadium 44 years ago."

"There's no more appropriate artist in the history of rock and roll to play the first concert at Citi Field," said Jeff Wilpon, COO, New York Mets. "The era of big-time rock and roll concerts started with Paul and The Beatles at Shea and we're thrilled to continue that tradition at our new home."

--Anthony DiComo
The Power Of Drupal Views

When people ask me why I would ever use Drupal to build a website instead of other platforms like WordPress or Movable Type I typically have one answer, "CCK and Views." That could be interpreted as two answers but since the modules go hand in hand I'll call it one. I've written about the basics of CCK before so I recommend that you check out that post if you're interested in understanding CCK better. This post is about the Views module.

Views is a module that offers Drupal site developers (you I presume) great flexibility of choices for displaying content. Views provides this flexibility by offering up a graphical user interface (pictured below) that allows you to query the Drupal database for content and choose the format of the content display without having to write SQL queries. I've written plenty of SQL queries in the past for business purposes and if I never write another one I won't be disappointed. If you want a much closer look at the interface I'm speaking of feel free to check out one of my videos that shows you how to do something practical with views.

Views Interface (Drupal 6)

Three Basic Types of Views

There are three basic types of views available in the base module. You can display content as a page, block, or RSS feed. When I say "content" I mean entire Drupal nodes or individual fields. For example, the page at http://learnbythedrop.com/cckandviews is a "view" that lists x number of nodes. When you list the node you get the Title + Body, plus links to comments and any other fields that would display when you are viewing a node. If you choose to display fields instead of nodes, then you can pick and choose individual fields from your nodes to display. For example,. the page at http://learnbythedrop.com/archives displays the Title (linked to the node), (Number of) Views, (Number of) Comments and (Number of) Votes fields.

The one thing that the views mentioned in this paragraph have in common is the fact that they are "page" views. Page views differ from other views because you assign a path (like http://learnbythedrop.com/archives) that displays the view as a page on your site. You can also create your list in a "block" view. When you choose block the content that you add to the view will be available on the block page (at admin/build/block) for configuration and placement just like any other block on the site.

You should put a little bit of thought in to what types of content you display in a block vs. a page. Blocks work well with lists of titles linked to nodes (see the "Recent Drops" and "Comments" blocks in the right sidebar), whereas a page might work best with full nodes or a collection of fields. Lucky for you that the views module has a very handy "live preview" feature that allows you view the results of your query while building your view.

The third type of standard view is the RSS feed view. This view outputs lists of nodes as an RSS feed that people can subscribe to in a feed reader such as Google Reader. If you have set up a page view that has the same content as the RSS feed you have the option to associate the RSS feed with that page and a small orange RSS Icon will appear on the page. See the bottom of the page at http://learnbythedrop.com/gallery for an example of how this looks.

Style Options

Drupal views also have several standard "style" options which differ depending on the type of view you choose. RSS, for example, is really a style option for your view. But if you choose to set up a page or a block view you have different options as to how the final display will appear. Some examples of style options are unformatted, list, grid and table. If you're creating a page full of nodes then you'll likely choose "unformatted" as your style. But if you're choosing a page with individual fields (like http://learnbythedrop.com/archives) then a "table" style might work best. For blocks that have lists of titles linked to nodes I typically choose the "list" style. Once again, the live preview option is your friend when making these types of decisions.

The "grid" style is an interesting choice if you're displaying just a couple of fields and want to repeat the content across and down the page. I've implemented this style on my view at http://iheartmets.com/metstweets, which shows a grid of recent tweets about the New York Mets.

<!--break-->

Display Controls

Drupal views provides very good control over exactly what and how content is displayed. The "filters" section allows you to indicate the rules for displaying content. For example you can choose to display only a certain node type. Or you can only display posts from a particular category. You can mix and match the controls to select, for example, only blog nodes with a category of "dogs". You can also choose to only display nodes that have been published, which would exclude posts that have been saved as drafts. That's probably a good idea.

You can also control the sorting of your content. You can sort based on any number of fields. For most things, but not always, I choose to sort based on the post date, descending so that the newest content shows up at the top of the list. You can also choose to display content in the order that things were updated so every time there's an update that content moves to the top of the list.If you are creating a view that is displayed in a table you can also make each of the headings sortable to the user as I have done over on http://learnbythedrop.com/archives.

Additional Features

While the views module has many valuable features that come standard you may also want to explore some of the other modules that extend the features of Drupal views. I've listed some of my favorites below.

Views Slideshow allows you to display the items in your view as a slideshow. This works great with photos (see this example) but will also work with text as well. I've got a pair of views slideshows running on the front page of http://iheartmets.com. The views show a rotating lists of tweets and podcasts.

Views Accordion allows you to display content that opens up when the header is clicked. I'm using this module on the page at http://learnbythedrop.com/gettingstarted.

Media RSS is a very useful module for image publishers. It adds social tags that allow the photos you publish to be easily picked up by subscribers and other websites that import your feed. I'm using this module on my image gallery feed at http://learnbythedrop.com/gallery/feed.

iTunes lets you publish iTunes compliant podcast feeds, which provides a homegrown alternative to using a service like FeedBurner.I'm not using this one right now but I am working with it on a test site.

There are also many other modules that add options which allow you to do more with views. For example when you add a rating module, like Plus 1 for example, you get the option to access the voting data via views and present that data as I've done on http://learnbythedrop.com/archives. If you want to browse and keep up with all of the possibilities for adding on to views I suggest that you check out the views module category on Drupal.org.

Learning More

There's a lot to the views functionality and it's a very important part of any Drupal site that seeks to move beyond very basic publishing. While you can build a pretty good site without using views there will likely come a time when you want to see something displayed differently. And when that time comes you don't want to be fooling with SQL queries in order to make it happen. So I recommend that you first become a student of the basics of views (and it's companion module CCK), trying out the features on a test site until you feel confident to start working on a production site. The time you put in will be well worth the effort.

The team at Lullabot has a views video product that may be able to help and they have posted a pair of free chapters so you can get a taste of what they have to offer. I've got my CCK and Views page (created with views of course) which offers you some more learning as well.

Good luck and please let me know your thoughts, comments and questions about the views module in the comments section.

Shared by Robert Safuto
MySpace and YouTube killed eBay? I think not. First off, eBay has not been killed. They are weaker than they were a few years ago but then again almost every company is weaker. Their biggest mistake was paying too much money for Skype. eBay is a revenue machine that actually makes a profit. I don't think any of the "fun" companies (except for MySpace) in this post have made a profit. This is just a slam post by a disgruntled former employee.

There are a number of web based services that I use on a daily basis that I find to be very useful. I use FriendFeed to keep track of the postings from people who I find interesting. I’ve been using Seesmic Desktop recently to keep track of activity on Facebook and Twitter. I also use Google Reader to keep track of news and blog posts via their RSS feeds.

All of these services have a certain level of importance to me but I know that eventually some of them will be gone. The short answer as to why they will be gone is “money.” None of these services has any appreciable revenue streams relative to the costs to run them. As far as I know only Facebook (via advertising) and Twitter (via a small amount of advertising) have any sources of revenue. Seesmic Desktop, FriendFeed and Google Reader seem to exist on the power of previous investments alone.

The ability to earn revenue from customers is only one factor in the survival equation. Access to capital is another factor. As a part of Google, Google Reader has no capital worries. You could even argue that Google Reader does have a revenue stream because it allows the presentation of Adsense in RSS feeds which Google earns revenue from. Facebook also has access to substantial capital due to the sheer size and growth potential of their service. Even so I think that there’s about a 10% chance that Facebook fails at some time during the next five years. Even as the growth of Facebook makes the service more valuable the cost of running the service grows as well.

Twitter, FriendFeed and Seesmic are in a much less enviable position. Much has been made of Twitter’s growth in recent months. It’s true that Twitter’s traffic numbers have exploded but who really knows what traffic and registered users are worth these days? Traffic and users are certainly not worth what they were two years ago when cash was flowing freely into the Web 2.0 space. Given the buzz around Twitter I think that they could be able to raise more capital if they needed to. Then again, each time Twitter (and Facebook for that matter) raises capital they dilute earlier investors and shareholders. That can’t sit well with employees who are banking on a big payday at the end of the rainbow. Heavy users of the service are the ones who need to be concerned though. A lot of social marketing campaigns and 3rd party application developers are counting on the success of Twitter. Twitters lack of revenue after two plus years in the marketplace should worry these folks. I think there’s a 25% chance that Twitter fails during the next five years.

FriendFeed and Seesmic are in the most trouble. FriendFeed is a service that is useful for heavy web publishers and the people who follow them. But how many people are heavy web publishers? It’s a very small slice of the web publishing market. For every Scobleizer there are thousands of casual publishers who can make do with the functionality offered by Facebook. I also think that followers on FriendFeed are more likely to be “friends” in that special web 2.0 category as opposed to real friends and family that people are connected to on Facebook. So while FriendFeed has value that value exists in a deep niche of web users. I don’t think advertising will work well with the users on FriendFeed. So FriendFeed will either have to start charging for something (an iPhone app maybe?) or be sold to someone with deeper pockets in order to make the service work in the long run. As such I feel that there’s at least a 50% chance that FriendFeed fails within the next two years.

Seesmic has the toughest road ahead. The core Seesmic video conversation service had a lot of early buzz but that buzz has since died down. The fact is that most people are not prolific publishers with video. And it’s also a fact that video is expensive to store and stream. So at some point you either have to charge for the video service or you need to integrate large amounts of advertising. Seesmic has done neither. Seesmic is also the only startup service in this list that has done layoffs. The Seesmic Desktop application has increased interest in the company. How does Seesmic capitalize on a free desktop application? The only two methods are advertisements and charging for the software. It’s hard to charge when competitors (such as TweetDeck) exist and would probably continue to offer their application for free. There’s no loyalty in Web 2.0 land. Most people would defect to a new tool rather than pay. Advertising might bring in some revenue but would probably cause people to switch services if the other comparable service is not inserting ads into the stream. It’s a tough situation. So unless Seesmic gets bought out I think there’s a 75% chance that they fail within the next two years.

The possibility of the failure of a web service where I publish or store information is something that I consider when determining how much time to invest on that service. Of all the services on this list the one that poses the most risk to myself is Facebook. FriendFeed is mostly an aggregator of things I publish elsewhere. Twitter is a place where I publish links and short messages but I don’t consider the content I post there to be particularly important. Seesmic desktop is a tool that helps me watch activity and can be easily replaced. I use Google Reader to share and comment on news and blog posts but I also think that there’s no chance that Reader is going away anytime soon.

I take steps to mitigate my personal risk by not putting too much effort into any one service. I have the most exposure to a Facebook failure but I also limit the amount of things that I publish there. I don’t rely on any single service to promote the myself, build my network or socialize. I’ve got my own domains running my own versions of web applications that act as the cornerstone of my presence on the internet. I see many people (and even businesses now) that increasingly rely on some of the services mentioned in this post (and others with similar risks) to build and maintain their presence on the internet. To them I say beware. Some of these services are doomed and if you rely on them too much you stand to lose a lot when they fail.

© Robert J.
Changes To Project Pages On Drupal.org

You may or may not have noticed some subtle changes to the layout of project pages for modules over on Drupal.org. A few things have changed. Links for project issues and feedback have been moved from the bottom part of the page to a larger block on the left side of the page. There is also a search field that allows for a keyword search of the issue queue and a link to subscribe to the issue queue via email. I was a little confused when I first realized there were some changes so I thought it was worth posting to give those a heads up who might be confused too.

Washington State Slashes Taxes For Newspapers; Will Similar Efforts Follow?

Shared by Robert Safuto
As newspapers decline blogs and other forms of new media rise. It's the circle of life. Cutting newspaper taxes gives an unfair advantage against those who report news in other mediums.

It's not going to be enough by itself to save newspapers, but some governments are nevertheless trying to do their part to help. In Washington State, which lost one of its two Seattle dailies earlier this year, Gov. Chris Gregoire signed into law a 40 percent cut in the state's tax for newspaper printers and publishers. It should save the industry about $1.5 million a year.

Washington State's tax cut could trigger similar legislation elsewhere in the U.S.—including in the U.S. Senate. The Senate held hearings earlier this month on the "future of journalism." And, in late March, U.S. Senator Benjamin Cardin, who represents Maryland, introduced the Newspaper Revitalization Act in Congress, which would let newspapers operate as non-profits if they wanted to. The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Finance.

Accepting government help is obviously a little awkward for papers, which fancy themselves as government watchdogs. For instance, Cardin's bill would forbid papers from making any political endorsements. And in perhaps an indication of the odd situation that government help puts papers in, the Seattle Times, which is likely to benefit the most from the new law, printed only four paragraphs about it on its website.

Tracking The Mets Progress

How are the Mets doing? It's a good question. One way to gauge how the Mets are doing is to compare their progress to last season. I've created a chart that compares the number of Mets wins this season with their wins at the same point last season. You see that there's a blue line that goes all the way out with the 2008 win figures and a red line with this year's win tally. The bottom line is that if the red line goes above the blue line we're doing good. If not then we're not doing so good. At this point we're even with last season.

This chart is going to have a permanent page at http://iheartmets.com/progress-tracker.

Perhaps Omar Is Right

Omar Minaya caused a bit of controversy the other day when he stated the following:

"Some people see edge as leadership. Sometimes, you need a little meanness to your game. Some people perceive leadership as meanness. I couldn't tell you that we have that type of guy. We have leaders. But everyone's perception of leadership is different. ... We have good guys, solid professionals. There is a smile on David Wright's face, a smile on Jose Reyes' face. But there is not an edge to them."

I tend to agree. Reyes and Wright are excellent players. I couldn't imagine them on another team. Sure they will have ups and downs but all players have hot and cold spells. I don't get the feeling that they are leaders yet though. Lord knows it's tough to be a leader on a team where you have vets like Beltran, Delgado and Johan Santana who are superstars. But there are plenty of other impressionable players on the Mets and who better to lead them then young, homegrown stars like Wright and Reyes?

The Mets have needed some real fire on the team for a while now. Think back to 1986 when the Mets had fiery personalities like Ray Knight who were willing to throw a punch at someone who got in their face. That's no way to play ball on a daily basis but every so often players have to be that passionate about the outcome of a game. The Mets are lacking that kind of player right now.

Omar may have been a bit too truthful in his statements because he later backtracked on it, saying "We play the game different from other guys." Jeez, come on. The Mets need to win in 2009. If there's a vacuum of leadership then I think that Jerry Manuel needs to school the appropriate players (Wright and Reyes!) to step up, get loud, get passionate and motivate this Mets team.

What do you think?

You have to hand it to Google. They keep coming up with innovative ideas to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and the harmful emissions that go along with them. Unfortunately some of the efforts that they trumpet as “low carbon”, “green” or “renewable” don’t pass the common sense test.

You may remember that one time Google turned their home page black in order to help people conserve energy. The only problem with the approach was the fact that computer monitors use the same amount of energy to render a pixel regardless of the color. Google even admits that a black page background, “saves no energy.”

Google’s latest energy saving scheme is just as dubious. They have enlisted a herd of goats to handle the mowing of weeds and brush at Google headquarters. Google calls the goat initiative, “a low-carbon approach” to meeting their needs. Is it really a low-carbon approach?

Consider the fact that the goats need to be transported from their home ranch to Google and back. Our guess is that the truck transporting the goats to and fro runs on diesel fuel. How much fuels is used and how many harmful emissions are created will depend greatly on the travel distance between the home of the goats and Google HQ. At best we think it’s fair to say that it would end up being a wash.

Instead of enlisting goats that will also require care and feeding while onsite, Google should consider investing in the Hustler Zeon which is billed as, “The World’s First All-Electric Zero Turn Riding Mower.”

While this initiative appears to contain more noise than signal Google has made some laudable investments into alternative energy via Google.org with their RechargeIT and Power Meter programs.

© Robert J.
Three Americans Held Captive

At the present time there are three Americans being held for the alleged crime of espionage in both Iran and North Korea. All three are women. All three are journalists. All three are almost certainly innocent. The U.S. government must do something about this.

In February of 2009 Roxana Saberi was arrested in Iran for buying a bottle of wine. She was later charged with spying, tried, convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison. Roxana is well known as a journalist and no reasonable evidence has been presented to support the claims of espionage. She is currently engaging in a hunger strike while imprisoned to protest the travesty of her arrest and subsequent kangaroo court conviction. More information on Roxana and the current situation is available at http://freeroxana.net/.

Laura Ling and Euana Lee are journalists with Current.tv, a new media network started by Al Gore. They were arrested in March 2009 for allegedly crossing the border into North Korea from China. As you might expect there are conflicting accounts of what exactly happened but the net result is that these two women will soon be tried on the charge of espionage. I'm not aware of any organized online effort to garner support for Laura and Euana.

All three of these women took significant chances getting involved with countries that are know to be among the lowest of the low when it comes to human rights. That doesn't excuse the conduct of Iran and North Korea though. And it doesn't diminish the responsibility of the United States Government in securing their release.

There's been a lot of talk by the President since the campaign and inauguration about how reaching out to enemies will yield improved relations with and greater humanity from rogue nations throughout the world. I know that the President has made overtures to a variety of suspect world leaders including Ahmadinejad of Iran and Chavez of Venezuela. I'm not aware of any outreach to Kim Jong Il in North Korea.

The bottom line is this. Where's the beef on American policy toward rogue states that imprison American journalists? The soft and silent approach has not worked yet. I really hope it does work because we can't leave these women hanging out to dry.

The President did the right thing in securing the release of Captain Phillips from the Somali pirates. That was child's play compared to this scenario though. Somalia is a country that has nothing, not even a government. Both Iran and North Korea have nuclear capabilities and unhinged despots minding the store. Situations like these are the ones where Presidents earn their stripes (or not.)

Because We Remained Strong

Ronald Reagan's very famous "tear down this wall" speech included another crucial quote that speaks to the virtues of using strong (some might say stubborn or arrogant) foreign policy when dealing with adversaries.

"Because we remained strong the Soviets came back to the table."

There's a very important lesson to be learned in Reagan's steadfastness when it came to defending Freedom and Democracy around the world. Apologizing for preaching values that stress Freedom and Democracy puts our country in a position of weakness in the eyes of the leaders of countries for whom those words mean nothing. Because they will believe that they are stronger and can outlast and outsmart us.

I say give the likes of Chavez, Ahmadinejad, Castro and Kim Jong Il nothing. Not a wink. Not a smile. And definitely not a handshake. You speak past them as if they are invisible. You talk directly to their people. And you let them know the great things that are waiting for them on the other side. You don't give an inch. Because for every inch you give they will take a foot. And if our leaders have the personal will to stand up to the monsters then eventually you get something like this.

A lot of people said at the time that Reagan would start a nuclear war as a consequence of his strong pro freedom stance during the Cold War. It turns out that he won the thing without having to fire a shot.

About Those Tea Parties

Yesterday thousands of fellow conservatives and many otherwise disgruntled Americans from across the political spectrum got together to protest excessive government spending, corporate bailouts and massive taxation of the citizenry. As you could probably imagine any event like this, especially one being cheered on and heavily covered by those dogs at Fox News was bound to get out of control. Check out this video I found on YouTube of the right-wing extremists setting fire to a mannequin in the streets.

Oh wait a minute that was at the G20 in England. Things did get a little crazy though. In thos other video I found there was lots of chanting and a bit of chaos as the marchers blocked the streets.

Okay that was an anti-Israel protest in San Francisco. One of the real tea parties went down in San Antonio where to the horror of law enforcement officials people waved (gulp!) American flags and Ted Nugent played the Star Spangled Banner in front of a large crowd that looked to be very peaceful and having a good time.

Jeez, things really got crazy. To hear (or see) the comments from news reports and angry bloggers you would think that these organized protests were organized by the devil himself.

Ning: 1 Million Social Networks Strong

Shared by Robert Safuto
Another reason why the big tech blogs are useless. They act as cheerleaders and fail to train a critical eye on the subjects they cover. I've already seen two "top" tech blogs report this Ning story with virtually the same title. Neither questioned the 1,000,000 network claim even though they know that 80% of Ning "networks" have no activity. And some quick math on the traffic numbers indicates that each "network" hosts about 5 unique visitors a month. In short, Ning is greatly inflating the worth of and interest in their services.

Ning is going to be reaching a big milestone this week, when it sees its one millionth social network created on its self-serve platform. Ning, which had its initial beta launch in 2005 and ‘full’ launch in 2007, makes it easy for people to create niche social networks focused on the topics they care about.

Ning continues to grow steadily despite the fact that it banned ‘adult’ social networks late last year (some had suggested that the site relied on these adult networks to drive a significant amount of traffic, which isn’t the case). Ning now reports 22 million registered users overall, 700,000 of whom have created their own networks. Of the 1 million networks created, 200,000 remain active, across which 2.5 million new pieces of content (including comments and photos, and other media) are added per day.

Recently the site has been adding a number of new features that help its network creators spruce up their networks, including a persistent chat feature similar to Facebook Chat. The site also recently revamped its homepage at Ning.com to make it easier for users to manage their activity on multiple social networks and to discover new ones. Network Creators can also access a new directory of OpenSocial applications which run the gamut from games and Ecards to enhanced messaging services.

Because many of its users (particularly network creators) tend to be quite passionate about the sites they’ve built, Ning hasn’t been without its share of controversy, but its continued growth seems to indicate that most users are satisfied.

Get your free music here!

These no-strings-attached downloads come from Amazon's MP3 store, which is home to DRM-free tunes--many of them discounted. You can't download all the freebies at once, but that's the only real catch. Read this blog post by Rick Broida on The Cheapskate.

Twitter And Your Drupal Site

Twitter is the hottest social network on the web right now so it's reasonable to think that Drupal site builders would be seeking different ways to integrate their sites with Twitter.Thankfully, there are a number of ways that Drupallers can leverage the power of Twitter on their sites.

Twitter Module

The Twitter module allows you to post to or grab user data from Twitter. The module allows you to add the user and password for a site wide twitter account that will post items to Twitter when they are published to the Drupal site. You can choose which node types will send a notification to Twitter and add some additional default text to the post as well. There is also an option to let users input their personal Twitter account information so that their tweets can be imported to their profiles on your site.

Twitter Node Settings

Twitter Post Example

Imported Twitter Statuses

Tweet Module

The Tweet module adds a link that makes it very easy for site visitors to share your nodes on Twitter. The link to share with Twitter is displayed in the "links section" on nodes and teasers. The tweet link can be presented as an icon and the module project page points to some free "tweet this" buttons that you can use.

Tweet Link Example

Feed API

Twitter offers a wide variety of feeds that you can then import to your Drupal site using the Feed API module. Once imported via the Feed API module you can customize the presentaton of the tweets using the views module. Each user has their own RSS feed (here's mine) that is linked in the right sidebar of their profile page. Twitter searches via http://search.twitter.com also generate RSS feeds as well. Here's a feed link generated by a search for "drupal" on Twitter. You can get even more granular feeds from Twitter if you use their advanced search feature. For example, here's a feed generated from a search for "drupal" and my username on Twitter. The feed only displays the tweets from me that mention Drupal.

Tweets Imported With FeedAPI

Pirating The Beatles: Some 100 Million Fab Four Tracks Illegally Downloaded A Year

Shared by Robert Safuto
I have no ideas what is going on with the digitization of the Beatles catalog. They are missing out on a huge opportunity by not having downloads on iTunes or Amazon MP3. The numbers in this post confirm that demands for Beatles MP3s is very healthy.

Amid the speculation today about whether The Beatles' digital remastering is a prelude, finally, to online retail, here are a couple of sobering data points worth considering ... Long story short: the Fab Four are already losing huge amounts to illegal downloading.

Of the people who currently use P2P networks, 23 percent download one or more Beatles tracks, P2P monitor BigChampagne told paidContent.org. Since 62 million people worldwide use P2P, the firm estimates, that's 14.26 million people already getting their Fab Four for free, an average 6.9 tracks per user - from cheap, relatively low-quality MP3 files, nevermind the high-quality new mixes. That's among the highest proportion BigChampagne has recorded for an act, CEO Eric Garland told us, though a smash single from an artist like 50 Cent can prove more popular.

Garland: "Of course, no one has been tracking file sharing long enough to say how many Beatles tracks have ever been downloaded absolutely, but the band continues to be as popular as ever and the annual total is in the many tens of millions, perhaps 100 million."

To put that in context, U2's recently leaked No Line On The Horizon album was downloaded 445,000 times in two weeks, earlier BigChampagne data showed. In other words, assuming that level of freeloading tails of over the year, Beatles tracks, even today, may be more popular than one of the biggest rock acts on the planet. You can only imagine how much The Beatles would have made had they managed to legitimise their online repertoire earlier…

I'll be cleaning up my hard drive soon so I can clear out and back up some old files. Then I'm going to give Wubi a spin.

Wubi is a Ubuntu installer for Windows users that will bring you into the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu Linux as any other application.

Skype on the iPhone: Brilliant

Shared by Robert Safuto
This is a good reason for me to get a 2nd generation iPod Touch.I don't see the benefit of using this on the iPhone. After all, it's already a phone.

Great news if you have an iPhone and want to use Skype – now you can make and receive your free phone calls over the net just as you can with Skype on your computer with a version of Skype for the iPhone, free software available today in the iTunes App Store.

I grabbed a copy early this morning and installed it on my iPhone.

I plan to have a review on my tech blog once I’ve been using it for a bit. Mind you, if you’ve used Skype before on a computer or a mobile device – with Skype Mobile, for instance, or perhaps with a 3 Skypephone – you’ll know what to expect: it’s simplicity itself, both to set up and use.

I used it to make a couple of calls, to other Skype users and to a normal phone number, as well as received calls from other Skype users and from someone calling from a normal phone (note that calling to and receiving from normal phones are added-value Skype services which you have to pay for).

In all cases, brilliant: call quality via my wi-fi network was excellent, both holding the phone to speak into its mike as well as with the hands-free loudspeaker (great for conference calls).

I recorded a 4-minute Audioboo with my first impressions after installing Skype for iPhone (which you can also listen to right here if you see the embedded Flash audio player at the top of the page).

The only negative I can see right now, which I mentioned in my first-impressions audio, is that you can’t run Skype while you use your iPhone for anything else.

That’s a limitation of the iPhone platform, not Skype, which doesn’t let you run more than one app at a time. So I see the value of Skype for iPhone more as deciding to use it at a specific moment for a call or text.

Will this change on the next or future versions of the iPhone? Who knows but I reckon there must be huge pressure on Apple to address this big negative only-one-app-at-a-time issue about iPhone.

Meanwhile, if you have an iPhone, just get Skype and try it for yourself!

© 2009 - visit the author for more great content.
