Event Details
Evolution is a naturally occurring force in life, however there’s nothing predictable about Fake Problems sonic journey from underground heroes to indie rock trailblazers. Since forming in Naples, Florida, five years ago the group—which includes vocalist/guitarist Chris Farren, bassist Derek Perry, drummer Sean Stevenson and guitarist Casey Lee—have released two critically acclaimed full-lengths, won over countless fans all over the world and toured and played shows with everyone from The Hold Steady to Frank Turner. However with their sophomore release on Side One Dummy Records, Real Ghosts Caught on Tape, Fake Problems have exceeded even their own lofty expectations by creating a cerebral masterpiece that sees the band fully reconciling all of their seemingly disparate influences and proving it’s finally their time to step into the spotlight. Recorded with Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem, Lucero) in California, the album sees the band stripping down the expansive orchestration of 2009’s It’s Great To Be Alive and discovering what magic lurks at the core of Fake Problems’ collective psyche. “We wanted the album to be a little more subtle and let it speak for itself,” Farren explains when asked how found the act found the inspiration to craft a unique brand of music that manages to incorporate elements of infectious indie rock & roll and ‘60s girl groups—the latter of which is aided by crooning vocals courtesy of Fake Problems’ longtime friends/fans Arrested Development’s Mae Whiteman and Alia Shawkat.

A rock & roll band with an enduring fondness for pure pop and a wicked, sly sense of humor, TAB the Band defy easy categorization. They may love the Beatles and Cheap Trick as much as T-Rex and the Rolling Stones, but TAB aren’t classic rockers; they’re a vibrant, contemporary band that blends the vigor of punk, the might of arena rock and the melodicism of power-pop, earning the admiration of Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse, Stone Temple Pilots, Slash, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr, alt-rock stalwarts who requested TAB The Band as their opening act. TAB the Band’s full range can be heard on Zoo Noises (released Jan 2010), a freewheeling, all-encompassing carnival ride, fueled by such intoxicating singles as the percussive “She Said No (I Love You)” and the breakneck hooks of “Bought and Sold.”

Some bands have coined themselves as revolutionary, but Fear Nuttin Band is evolutionary. With their musical roots fusing the intensity of metal, the rhythm of Jamaican dance hall and the social consciousness of hip hop, this band is defining a genre. The Fear Nuttin Band sound is as diverse as the cultures the band members represent. The hot West Indian sun incubated the talents of frontmen Roosta (vocals), Prowla (vocals) and Jay Chung (guitar), while instrumentalists Matt Penza (drums), Chris Regan (guitar), Brian Daigle (bass) represent New England’s finest. The union of these six individuals was in the stars: with Chris, Jay, Penza and Brian lending their musical talents to heavy bands all over the Pioneer Valley, the four always found themselves in and out of bands together. It was the same day that Matt, Chris and Brian found themselves without a frontman that Roosta and Prowla called up and asked them to jam. These final Fear Nuttin Band members have been together since.

In a city like Boston where bands are nearly as numerous as rats, it can be a frustrating exercise in futility to sort through the endless entrants into the musical fray. The Shills make it easy for you. The Shills eliminate all the guess work with their undeniable quality and engaging complexity. With a sound that can go from driving rock rhythms to lush, lofty sonic soundscapes, versatility is The Shills’ true stock-in-trade. One would be wise not to mistake the bands expansive sound as studio trickery though since The Shills have been steadily building a loyal following of acolytes over the course of their six-plus years together based primarily on their explosive dynamism and Swiss-like precision on stage.

Event Details
For the Sake of the Song Presents Neil Young’s Harvest May 18th at Middle East Upstairs; Local Artists Perform Classic Album to Benefit the Music Drives Us Foundation Local concert series For the Sake of the Song will bring together an all star cast of local folk and roots musicians to perform Neil Young’s classic album Harvest in its entirety at the Middle East Upstairs on Wednesday May 18th. In addition to providing new takes on classics like “Heart of Gold” and “Old Man” the concert will benefit the New England non-profit Music Drives Us. Doors open at 8:00pm (Show at 8:30pm) and tickets are $10 at the door. This special concert, which will feature local performers Sarah Blacker, Danielle Miraglia, Autumn Hollow Band, James Houlahan, Patrick Coman, and Garlic & Moonshine, is the second edition of For the Sake of the Song’s semi-annual charity showcase. Following the success of the inaugural Blood on the Tracks performance, which raised money for the New England chapter of the National MS Society, founder Patrick Coman realized the opportunity to give back to the local community while raising the profile of the Boston’s burgeoning Americana scene. Says Coman, “As most people know, musicians don’t always have much to give in terms of money, but what I realized after putting the first show together is that artists here are really eager to use their abilities to support a good cause. I knew that we’d have to make these events a regular thing because not only are they a blast, but there are just so many great local organizations that we’d love to support.”

From the Boston Phoenix’ 50 Bands in 50 States: WHY TAN VAMPIRES? We’ve had our eye on Jake Merhmann’s humble solo outings for a few years, but only recently has he picked up the pace with a full band and more than a handful of live dates. Tan Vampires (no relation to the Ivy League Afro-poseurs of similar appetite) flesh out Merhmann’s shrugging emotional skeleton with seasick drums and underwater electric-piano flourishes that give that wavering vibrato of his some well-worn Muscle Shoals tread to roll with. They’re finishing up their first full-band record as we speak, but there’s no equal to a brooding night out with some lonely well drinks and this band up there onstage, takin’ it easy for all us sinners.

A musician’s musician, Ron Pope can do it all: sing his heart out, rip a guitar apart like his life depends on it, write a powerful anthem or a heartbreaking ballad, and rock a crowd anytime, anywhere. Likened to artists as diverse as Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, and U2, Pope’s musicality allows him to satisfy listeners of all kinds. Pope has garnered critical acclaim the world over for his gorgeous and unmistakable voice, electrifying stage presence, incredible songcraft, and high octane, blues-rock fueled guitar fireworks that hit listeners square in the gut. “First, I wanted to play just like Hendrix. Then, I wanted to create unique sonic landscapes, like Jonny Greenwood or the Edge. My inability to copy any of them exactly forced me to sound like something else…myself,” Pope says, of his explosive, definitive guitar style. While studying at NYU, Pope became a fixture in the thriving Greenwich Village music scene with his band The District. After two albums and nationwide tours where they wowed fans from Charleston’s famed Music Farm to The Whisky in LA, the band went on an extended hiatus as Pope began to focus on his solo project. Within a year of stepping out on his own, he’d sold hundreds of thousands of singles and had offers from a number of major labels. He eventually chose to sign with Universal Republic, home of countless marquee artists, including Taylor Swift, Lil’ Wayne, Jack Johnson, and Amy Winehouse. Pope received the benefit of nationwide television exposure as a musical guest on MTV’s TRL and through multiple placements on Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance. Following one such placement, two of his albums exploded onto the iTunes top album chart at the same time, a feat that is very rarely accomplished by any artist, let alone one who isn’t a household name. After finishing his successful tenure as a Universal Republic recording artist, Pope decided that it was time to step out and shape the next phase of his career on his own terms. His new album “Whatever It Takes” is a game changer, combining all the things that make Ron Pope’s music refreshing and special; part guitar hero, part introspective songwriter, he writes from a perspective that is always earnest and sincere and creates music with an overpowering sense of grandeur that you can’t help singing along to. “Whatever It Takes” combines rafter shaking, arena ready anthems, with ballads exploring the depths of human emotion, and everything in between to create something that is uniquely Ron Pope.

For centuries, great thinkers like Stephen Hawking, Plato, and GG Allin pondered the question, “Which genre is more gnarly? The Heavy Metal and all of its subsidiaries or The Punk Rock and all of its various branches of afterthought?” On Saturday May 28, 2011, The Center for Family Achievement Through Bong Hit Therapy at Thrashachusetts sets out to answer this question for… well… a second time! Thrashachusetts Presents… METAL vs. PUNK II Stepping up to the debate will be none other than the classic Boston Hardcore band THE F.U.’S whose credentials include a long sabbatical in the early 1980’s at a research library known as The Rathskellar. In rebuttal, boasting a resume from such NASA based institutions as We’re All Gonna Die and Destruct-a-thon are BRING THE KNIFE, a quartet whose experiments with distortion and double kick drum beats earned these hard-working mathematicians a nomination at last years G20 Summit. THE BAD LIEUTENANTS are a mystery from a far off cosmos called Connecticut. Will they brow beat the competition with their Yale degrees? Will their Ian Adams based CD artwork pummel the other attendees into submission. Can life really exist beyond Interstate 84? LED TO THE GRAVE form the literary branch of our symposium. Hailing from the south coast and Cape Cod regions of our universe, legend has it that these poets of the high seas actually knew Ishmael and like a cowboy riding a trusty steed, road the white wale known as Moby Dick. CRADLE TO THE GRAVE spent years at other universities such as The New Alibis, The Lost City Angels, and The Far From Finished Academy of Arts and Sciences. In these other hallowed institutions, the professors at CRADLE TO THE GRAVE set out to answer the time-honored question, “Does anyone over the age of 22 really go to the Warped Tour?” HANNAFORD AND THE HEARTSTOPPERS (H.A.T.H.) will be making their final statement on the subject. After this colossal leap forward in human thought, this quintet will be enjoying retirement, sipping a Tom Collins on the beach, and only being brought back to the fold when the community needs their testimony for the Republican National Convention.

Twiddle, a Vermont-based quartet, spins tall-tales over an intricate soundscape of Hi-def shred. Twiddle has started a frenzy on both coasts with complexities that conjure up Coltrane, Ranglin, and Zappa, yet still embracing the roots of jam-band traditions. Finally, a group of musicians who not only understand climactic build and release, but deliver their intricate compositions night after night to jazz purists and screaming fans, all at the same time. Twiddle is a sound that defiantly weaves and dodges through genres. It’s three-dimensional music. You can see it from all sides, and even serve it to your guests. It’s Twiddle. Tasty.

we’re not like other bands shoney got there first. floating ghostly through the room, in all black, he looked like he hadn’t slept in a few and needed a good meal. turned out he didn’t need anything. slowtrain was next, a human wrecking crew, moving anything that wouldn’t move for him, immediately finding the most comfortable seat in the room. prettyfingers followed, as though on some white steed, an easy smile and easy to smile about. made friends w/ the room just by entering. peck, as though he had been there the whole time. effortless. endearing. the women swoon, the men get jealous. the room loved them before they even knew it. and then they took the stage as if it was theirs, as if they had made it themselves, and could do whatever they wanted w/ it. the band: tense. effortless. affecting. all smelling of whiskey and white sage. the sound: enormous. dynamic. important. whispering if it needs to, yelling because it must. attention isn’t paid, it is taken. the songs: probing. acidic. observant. often as though they are smiling at you, offering you coffee, making sure yr comfortable as you are slowly stripped w/o consent. the audience: undulating. losing control. probably drunk. the women dancing and the men trying to keep up. the boys in the back trying to figure it out. the journalists: curiously absent. what’s up w/ that? haven’t you heard? this is the wildest show in town. “I’m not entirely sure how to describe the music; Lamar writes songs that are accessible and fun at the same time as having an entirely unique aesthetic that falls somewhere between punk rock and folk. He’s a captivating frontman, giving his heart and soul to the audience while he delivers masterfully crafted lyrics and memorable hooks and occasionally leaps off the stage to join the (inevitable) dance party.” - sophie innerfield (boston band crush)

jay brannan was born under a rock in the coldest part of the himalayas where he was raised by trappist monks who taught him to maintain his body temperature without the necessity of food and clothing through intense meditation and really hard drinking. shortly after his first birthday, he suffered a graphic and painful death to a hungry mountain lion who wasn’t so good at meditation and just needed a hearty snack. it wasn’t long however before jay’s indomitable spirit reappeared in southeast texas to a family who actually wanted a girl. in many ways, they got what they wanted, yet the compromise seemed to be much more controversial than the original disappoinment. after years and years of southern baptist immersion in texas, canada, and oklahoma, jay found himself once again outside houston, TX, continuing in the public school system (quite similar to cattle herding, state prisons, or perhaps even the new york city healthcare system) and a conservative, repressive society infiltrated by a mixture of religion, rebellion, used car lots, and lots of barbecue (the latter being the most repulsive?).

There is nothing out there like Zach Deputy. Truly a one-man band, he is a powerhouse of performance, technical chops, and one hell of a charismatic presence. He isn’t the only performer out there doing this, but he has taken the technique to the next level. First and foremost, however, Zach Deputy is a songwriter, a shredding guitarist and a soulful singer with a 4+ octave vocal range.

Goosepimp Orchestra A Floating CD Release Bash!
Rock On! Concert Cruises at Mass Bay Lines | Boston MA
|
|
|
Event Details
Goosepimp Orchestra is an 8 piece psychedelic latin/funk dance party. Driving elements from all over the musical spectrum into an unrelenting cosmic force, Goosepimp’s live performances have garnered them a reputation for stirring crowds into a dancing frenzy. Smothered with high energy and seasoned with a carefully crafted balance of experimentation and groove, their grassroots mentality has been captivating a devout and growing fanbase, packing venues just to get their fix of the Goose. The first footprints of Goosepimp’s musical journey can be traced back to the turn of the millennium, when childhood friends Mike Cantor and Bob Greel stumbled upon a chemistry that culminated their admiration for elements of various dimensions. The two met bassist Dave Pelletier, who’s bottom end backbone developed ideas into all night jam sessions. Through Dave, came his brother Adam, providing steady rhythm on guitar. After recruiting Josh Filgate on Trombone, Jon Albertelly on Trumpet, and Seth Bailin on Saxophone, the band’s presence was screaming with a sharp horn section. By adding Cantor’s hometown friend Joe Calabrese on the drums, a complete line-up was set in place to catapult Cantor and Greel’s original chemistry into the 21st century. In the three years that the current ensemble has been playing together, they have established their presence in and around their home of Boston, made numerous festival appearances throughout the Northeast, and maintained a steady gigging regiment up and down the East coast. Fueled by their trademark ability to morph themselves through the boundless realms of the sonic stratosphere, the development of the original concept has transcended into a sound that is danceable, funky, tight, and above all, in tune with their surrounding community. Their debut full length album, aptly entitled The Biggest Bang, captures ten raw glimpses inside the brainwork of an entrancing spiritual experience that has been sweeping audiences off their feet. Fans of funk, world music, jazz and psychedelic rock alike are given the opportunity to experience what happens when a powerful energy triggers a collision of groove and gluteus maximus.

As might be expected given their choice in names, Rubikon is a complex story of internecine war, ground meat products and baby making. The band Rubikon was founded in late 2001 by a southern man and three northerners. Though clearly outgunned in the Civil War reenactment department, Mississippi cave dweller and singer Jae decided to stick it out and make some music up in the chilly environs of Boston that he called home for a while. Northern aggressors Hubes (bass), Diggs (drums/vocals) and DR (guitars) were clearly pleased with Jae’s white flag of surrender and decided to start writing music with him. And music, my friends, was indeed written. The band quickly emerged as something of a musical meat grinder, merging layers of progressive hard rock riffs, soaring melodic vocals, complex harmonic structures, mile-high atmospherics and claustrophobic metallic outbursts into a flavorful musical sausage. This audio sausage was released on a few mouth-watering EPs in 2001 and 2002, then skillfully aged into a full length album, 2004’s “The Hollow Men”. The band took their artisanal meat wares on the road and toured the country a bunch of times playing hundreds of shows to folks all across our righteous meat-eating nation.

Rebirth Brass Band

Event Details
Simply put, The Rebirth Brass Band is a New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the now infamous Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. Rebirth is committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands while at the same time incorporating modern music into their show. Their signature brand of heavy funk has not only won over several generations of music lovers, it has become the soundtrack to an entire city. In the wake of the sometimes-stringent competition amongst brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down. Brass band music is joyful, heart-pumping and it was born and bred in soul-saturated New Orleans. Rebirth takes brassy funk to the city’s streets and clubs, doing second-line parades just about every Sunday and rocking regular gigs at night. But Rebirths reach is far beyond sweet-home New Orleans. Founded by tuba man and bandleader Phillip Frazier in 1983, Rebirth has toured the United States, Europe, and Africa. Frazier has compared brass music to gospel music saying “It’s very spiritual because the same feeling you get listening to gospel music, that feeling hits you with our band. It hits you in the heart, makes you want get up and shout”.

Post-modern, moody, experimental rock with an electronic-pop twist. Bittersweet they project, quiet coolness they possess. A massive sound meant for arenas… Vary Lumar is this. Their musical collective was born in 2006. Soon after, the four bandmates put out a lo-fi EP, cut their teeth in the clubs of Boston and NYC, and inhabited a chaotic, rat-plagued Allston, MA homestead. Vary Lumar’s debut album, “Waiting Room” [2008], unveiled the band’s dynamic style. The disc was honored by Performer Magazine as Album of the Month in July ’08, and received airplay on over 150 radio stations nationwide. As they continued to carve out a place for themselves in the Boston music scene, the band started experimenting with new material, electronic sounds, and drum & bass grooves, developing a new musical identity for Vary Lumar.

ABX (pronounced like three consecutive letters) and STV SLV (pronounced “steve sleeve”) are collectively known as The Hood Internet. For the past three years, the duo have been chewing up the indie, pop, rap and R&B landscapes and spitting out pure fire. Like laptop-armed alchemists, they draw from their expansive interest in the many faces of modern music and re-imagine songs for mass public consumption through www.thehoodinternet.com. Event Details
Strangefolk veterans Erik Glockler and Luke Patchen Montgomery have teamed up with Maine’s resident guitar hero Stevie Jones, Drum-Goddess Ginger Cote. The result is Dirigo, a folk/alt-country/jam band that harmonizes shreds and journeys effortlessly from audacious to formidable. While their sound is influenced by artists from Johnny Cash to Led Zeppelin, they maintain an individuality that has been satisfying, gratifying, and delighting audiences all over New England. They sustain a rock-solid fan base, one that may be rooted within the Strangefolk Community but has extended beyond that to one they have been establishing thru their most recent gigs as Dirigo. Many are looking for a Strangefolk fix, and Dirigo attracts a similar fan base with their Alt-Country Jam aesthetic. The Dirigo catalogue features Patchen & Glock originals, as well as a number of Folk covers and Stevie Jones originals. Each artist has been rocking stages nationwide for at least a decade, and if you’re auspicious enough to catch these guys live, you’ll be treated to an night of Glockler’s undeniably resonant voice and most excellent bass lines, Patchen’s mad rhythm guitar skills, Stevie’s incredible shredding, and Ginger’s rock-solid drumming, culminating in the ultimate musical experience as they come together as a truly cohesive unit.

The Slackers

Event Details
The Slackers are a classic American band that is equal parts grit and grace. Their slow rise against the odds is a story in perseverance and a belief in their musical vision, what Vic likes to call, “Jamaican Rock N Roll.” While they have been influenced, and even personally taught by Jamaican ska/reggae originators, like the Skatalites and the Upsetters (Original backing band for the Wailers), the band sees its music as an extension of the traditions of the United States. This band is equally appreciative of old blues, country, 60s soul, rock, and Rnb as it is of reggae, rocksteady, dub, and Ska. It is as if the Rolling Stones or the Yardbirds had grown up on Bob Marley as well as Muddy Waters. Smashing the stereotypes of “ska” as happy, uptempo, and shallow music, the Slackers play with an aggressive edge and their songs veer in themes from the personal to the political. They can out jam any hippie band and outwrite most singer songwriters. From their 1996 release, Better Late Than Never through to 2010 with The Great Rocksteady Swindle, they have established themselves as America’s premiere interpreters and innovators of Jamaican music and a pretty good rock band to boot.
