<h3>Leviticus 19-20:21</h3>
<p>New International Version (NIV)</p>

<h4>Leviticus 19</h4>
<h5>Various Laws</h5>
<p>1 The LORD said to Moses, 2“Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: ‘Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.3“‘Each of you must respect your mother and father, and you must observe my Sabbaths. I am the LORD your God.</p>
<p>4“‘Do not turn to idols or make metal gods for yourselves. I am the LORD your God.</p>
<p>5 “‘When you sacrifice a fellowship offering to the LORD, sacrifice it in such a way that it will be accepted on your behalf. 6 It shall be eaten on the day you sacrifice it or on the next day; anything left over until the third day must be burned up. 7 If any of it is eaten on the third day, it is impure and will not be accepted. 8Whoever eats it will be held responsible because they have desecrated what is holy to the LORD; they must be cut off from their people.</p>
<p>9 “‘When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the LORD your God.</p>
<p>11“‘Do not steal.</p>
<p>“‘Do not lie.</p>
<p>“‘Do not deceive one another.</p>
<p>12“‘Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.</p>
<p>13“‘Do not defraud or rob your neighbor.</p>
<p>“‘Do not hold back the wages of a hired worker overnight.</p>
<p>14“‘Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but fear your God. I am the LORD.</p>
<p>15“‘Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.</p>
<p>16“‘Do not go about spreading slander among your people.</p>
<p>“‘Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor’s life. I am the LORD.</p>
<p>17“‘Do not hate a fellow Israelite in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in their guilt.</p>
<p>18“‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.</p>
<p>19“‘Keep my decrees.</p>
<p>“‘Do not mate different kinds of animals.</p>
<p>“‘Do not plant your field with two kinds of seed.</p>
<p>“‘Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.</p>
<p>20 “‘If a man sleeps with a female slave who is promised to another man but who has not been ransomed or given her freedom, there must be due punishment.[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-3302a">a</a>] Yet they are not to be put to death, because she had not been freed. 21 The man, however, must bring a ram to the entrance to the tent of meeting for a guilt offering to the LORD. 22With the ram of the guilt offering the priest is to make atonement for him before the LORD for the sin he has committed, and his sin will be forgiven.</p>
<p>23 “‘When you enter the land and plant any kind of fruit tree, regard its fruit as forbidden.[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-3305b">b</a>] For three years you are to consider it forbidden[<a title="See footnote c" href="#fen-NIV-3305c">c</a>]; it must not be eaten. 24 In the fourth year all its fruit will be holy, an offering of praise to the LORD. 25But in the fifth year you may eat its fruit. In this way your harvest will be increased. I am the LORD your God.</p>
<p>26“‘Do not eat any meat with the blood still in it.</p>
<p>“‘Do not practice divination or seek omens.</p>
<p>27“‘Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.</p>
<p>28“‘Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD.</p>
<p>29“‘Do not degrade your daughter by making her a prostitute, or the land will turn to prostitution and be filled with wickedness.</p>
<p>30“‘Observe my Sabbaths and have reverence for my sanctuary. I am the LORD.</p>
<p>31“‘Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.</p>
<p>32“‘Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the LORD.</p>
<p>33 “‘When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. 34The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.</p>
<p>35 “‘Do not use dishonest standards when measuring length, weight or quantity. 36 Use honest scales and honest weights, an honest ephah[<a title="See footnote d" href="#fen-NIV-3318d">d</a>] and an honest hin.[<a title="See footnote e" href="#fen-NIV-3318e">e</a>]I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt.</p>
<p>37“‘Keep all my decrees and all my laws and follow them. I am the LORD.’”</p>
<h4>Leviticus 20</h4>
<h5>Punishments for Sin</h5>
<p>1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 “Say to the Israelites: ‘Any Israelite or any foreigner residing in Israel who sacrifices any of his children to Molek is to be put to death. The members of the community are to stone him. 3 I myself will set my face against him and will cut him off from his people; for by sacrificing his children to Molek, he has defiled my sanctuary and profaned my holy name. 4 If the members of the community close their eyes when that man sacrifices one of his children to Molek and if they fail to put him to death, 5I myself will set my face against him and his family and will cut them off from their people together with all who follow him in prostituting themselves to Molek.</p>
<p>6“‘I will set my face against anyone who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute themselves by following them, and I will cut them off from their people.</p>
<p>7 “‘Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the LORD your God. 8Keep my decrees and follow them. I am the LORD, who makes you holy.</p>
<p>9“‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death. Because they have cursed their father or mother, their blood will be on their own head.</p>
<p>10“‘If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress are to be put to death.</p>
<p>11“‘If a man has sexual relations with his father’s wife, he has dishonored his father. Both the man and the woman are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.</p>
<p>12“‘If a man has sexual relations with his daughter-in-law, both of them are to be put to death. What they have done is a perversion; their blood will be on their own heads.</p>
<p>13“‘If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.</p>
<p>14“‘If a man marries both a woman and her mother, it is wicked. Both he and they must be burned in the fire, so that no wickedness will be among you.</p>
<p>15“‘If a man has sexual relations with an animal, he is to be put to death, and you must kill the animal.</p>
<p>16“‘If a woman approaches an animal to have sexual relations with it, kill both the woman and the animal. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.</p>
<p>17“‘If a man marries his sister, the daughter of either his father or his mother, and they have sexual relations, it is a disgrace. They are to be publicly removed from their people. He has dishonored his sister and will be held responsible.</p>
<p>18“‘If a man has sexual relations with a woman during her monthly period, he has exposed the source of her flow, and she has also uncovered it. Both of them are to be cut off from their people.</p>
<p>19“‘Do not have sexual relations with the sister of either your mother or your father, for that would dishonor a close relative; both of you would be held responsible.</p>
<p>20“‘If a man has sexual relations with his aunt, he has dishonored his uncle. They will be held responsible; they will die childless.</p>
<p>21 “‘If a man marries his brother’s wife, it is an act of impurity; he has dishonored his brother. They will be childless.</p>

<h3>Mark 8:11-38</h3>
<p>New International Version (NIV)</p>
</div>
<div>
<p>11 The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. 12 He sighed deeply and said, <span>“Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.”</span> 13Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.</p>
<h5>The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod</h5>
<p>14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. <span>15 “Be careful,”</span> Jesus warned them. <span>“Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.”</span></p>
<p>16They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”</p>
<p>17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: <span>“Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?</span> <span>18 Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember?</span> <span>19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”</span></p>
<p>“Twelve,” they replied.</p>
<p><span>20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”</span></p>
<p>They answered, “Seven.”</p>
<p>21 He said to them, <span>“Do you still not understand?”</span></p>
<h5>Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida</h5>
<p>22 They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, <span>“Do you see anything?”</span></p>
<p>24He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”</p>
<p>25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 Jesus sent him home, saying, <span>“Don’t even go into[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-24527a">a</a>] the village.”</span></p>
<h5>Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah</h5>
<p>27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, <span>“Who do people say I am?”</span></p>
<p>28They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”</p>
<p><span>29 “But what about you?”</span> he asked. <span>“Who do you say I am?”</span></p>
<p>Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”</p>
<p>30Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.</p>
<h5>Jesus Predicts His Death</h5>
<p>31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.</p>
<p>33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. <span>“Get behind me, Satan!”</span> he said. <span>“You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”</span></p>
<h5>The Way of the Cross</h5>
<p>34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: <span>“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.</span> <span>35 For whoever wants to save their life[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-24536b">b</a>] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.</span> <span>36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?</span> <span>37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?</span> <span>38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”</span></p>

<h4>Psalm 42</h4>
<h5>BOOK II Psalms 42–72</h5>
<h5>Psalm 42[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-14557a">a</a>][<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-14557b">b</a>]</h5>
<p><strong>For the director of music. A <em>maskil</em>[<a title="See footnote c" href="#fen-NIV-14557c">c</a>] of the Sons of Korah.</strong>1 As the deer pants for streams of water,    so my soul pants for you, my God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.    When can I go and meet with God? 3 My tears have been my food    day and night, while people say to me all day long,    “Where is your God?” 4 These things I remember    as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God    under the protection of the Mighty One[<a title="See footnote d" href="#fen-NIV-14560d">d</a>]with shouts of joy and praise    among the festive throng.</p>
<p>5Why, my soul, are you downcast?    Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God,    for I will yet praise him,    my Savior and my God.</p>
<p>6 My soul is downcast within me;    therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan,    the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar. 7Deep calls to deep    in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers    have swept over me.</p>
<p>8By day the LORD directs his love,    at night his song is with me—    a prayer to the God of my life.</p>
<p>9 I say to God my Rock,    “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning,    oppressed by the enemy?” 10My bones suffer mortal agony    as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long,    “Where is your God?”</p>
<p>11 Why, my soul, are you downcast?    Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God,    for I will yet praise him,    my Savior and my God.</p>

<h3>Leviticus 16:29-18:30</h3>
<p>New International Version (NIV)</p>
</div>
<div>
<p>29 “This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month you must deny yourselves[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-3231a">a</a>] and not do any work—whether native-born or a foreigner residing among you— 30 because on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the LORD, you will be clean from all your sins. 31 It is a day of sabbath rest, and you must deny yourselves; it is a lasting ordinance. 32 The priest who is anointed and ordained to succeed his father as high priest is to make atonement. He is to put on the sacred linen garments 33and make atonement for the Most Holy Place, for the tent of meeting and the altar, and for the priests and all the members of the community.</p>
<p>34“This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: Atonement is to be made once a year for all the sins of the Israelites.”</p>
<p>And it was done, as the LORD commanded Moses.</p>
<h4>Leviticus 17</h4>
<h5>Eating Blood Forbidden</h5>
<p>1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 “Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites and say to them: ‘This is what the LORD has commanded: 3 Any Israelite who sacrifices an ox,[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-3239b">b</a>] a lamb or a goat in the camp or outside of it 4 instead of bringing it to the entrance to the tent of meeting to present it as an offering to the LORD in front of the tabernacle of the LORD—that person shall be considered guilty of bloodshed; they have shed blood and must be cut off from their people. 5 This is so the Israelites will bring to the LORD the sacrifices they are now making in the open fields. They must bring them to the priest, that is, to the LORD, at the entrance to the tent of meeting and sacrifice them as fellowship offerings. 6 The priest is to splash the blood against the altar of the LORD at the entrance to the tent of meeting and burn the fat as an aroma pleasing to the LORD. 7 They must no longer offer any of their sacrifices to the goat idols[<a title="See footnote c" href="#fen-NIV-3243c">c</a>]to whom they prostitute themselves. This is to be a lasting ordinance for them and for the generations to come.’</p>
<p>8 “Say to them: ‘Any Israelite or any foreigner residing among them who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice 9and does not bring it to the entrance to the tent of meeting to sacrifice it to the LORD must be cut off from the people of Israel.</p>
<p>10 “‘I will set my face against any Israelite or any foreigner residing among them who eats blood, and I will cut them off from the people. 11 For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.[<a title="See footnote d" href="#fen-NIV-3247d">d</a>] 12Therefore I say to the Israelites, “None of you may eat blood, nor may any foreigner residing among you eat blood.”</p>
<p>13 “‘Any Israelite or any foreigner residing among you who hunts any animal or bird that may be eaten must drain out the blood and cover it with earth, 14because the life of every creature is its blood. That is why I have said to the Israelites, “You must not eat the blood of any creature, because the life of every creature is its blood; anyone who eats it must be cut off.”</p>
<p>15 “‘Anyone, whether native-born or foreigner, who eats anything found dead or torn by wild animals must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be ceremonially unclean till evening; then they will be clean. 16But if they do not wash their clothes and bathe themselves, they will be held responsible.’”</p>
<h4>Leviticus 18</h4>
<h5>Unlawful Sexual Relations</h5>
<p>1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘I am the LORD your God. 3 You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices. 4 You must obey my laws and be careful to follow my decrees. I am the LORD your God. 5Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the LORD.</p>
<p>6“‘No one is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations. I am the LORD.</p>
<p>7“‘Do not dishonor your father by having sexual relations with your mother. She is your mother; do not have relations with her.</p>
<p>8“‘Do not have sexual relations with your father’s wife; that would dishonor your father.</p>
<p>9“‘Do not have sexual relations with your sister, either your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether she was born in the same home or elsewhere.</p>
<p>10“‘Do not have sexual relations with your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter; that would dishonor you.</p>
<p>11“‘Do not have sexual relations with the daughter of your father’s wife, born to your father; she is your sister.</p>
<p>12“‘Do not have sexual relations with your father’s sister; she is your father’s close relative.</p>
<p>13“‘Do not have sexual relations with your mother’s sister, because she is your mother’s close relative.</p>
<p>14“‘Do not dishonor your father’s brother by approaching his wife to have sexual relations; she is your aunt.</p>
<p>15“‘Do not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law. She is your son’s wife; do not have relations with her.</p>
<p>16“‘Do not have sexual relations with your brother’s wife; that would dishonor your brother.</p>
<p>17“‘Do not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter. Do not have sexual relations with either her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter; they are her close relatives. That is wickedness.</p>
<p>18“‘Do not take your wife’s sister as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her while your wife is living.</p>
<p>19“‘Do not approach a woman to have sexual relations during the uncleanness of her monthly period.</p>
<p>20“‘Do not have sexual relations with your neighbor’s wife and defile yourself with her.</p>
<p>21“‘Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molek, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.</p>
<p>22“‘Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.</p>
<p>23“‘Do not have sexual relations with an animal and defile yourself with it. A woman must not present herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it; that is a perversion.</p>
<p>24 “‘Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled. 25 Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. 26 But you must keep my decrees and my laws. The native-born and the foreigners residing among you must not do any of these detestable things, 27 for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled. 28And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you.</p>
<p>29 “‘Everyone who does any of these detestable things—such persons must be cut off from their people. 30 Keep my requirements and do not follow any of the detestable customs that were practiced before you came and do not defile yourselves with them. I am the LORD your God.’”</p>

<h5>Jesus Honors a Syrophoenician Woman’s Faith</h5>
<p>24 Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre.[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-24488a">a</a>] He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. 25 In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet. 26The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.   <span>27 “First let the children eat all they want,”</span> he told her, <span>“for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”</span></p>
<p>28“Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”</p>
<p>29 Then he told her, <span>“For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”</span></p>
<p>30She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.</p>
<h5>Jesus Heals a Deaf and Mute Man</h5>
<p>31 Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis.[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-24495b">b</a>] 32There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him.</p>
<p>33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, <span><em>“Ephphatha!”</em></span> (which means <span>“Be opened!”</span>). 35At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.</p>
<p>36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”</p>
<h4>Mark 8</h4>
<h5>Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand</h5>
<p>1 During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, <span>2 “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat.</span> <span>3 If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”</span></p>
<p>4His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”</p>
<p><span>5 “How many loaves do you have?”</span>Jesus asked.</p>
<p>“Seven,” they replied.</p>
<p>6 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. 7 They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them. 8 The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 9 About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away, 10 he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.</p>

<h4>Leviticus 15</h4>
<h5>Discharges Causing Uncleanness</h5>
<p>1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When any man has an unusual bodily discharge, such a discharge is unclean. 3Whether it continues flowing from his body or is blocked, it will make him unclean. This is how his discharge will bring about uncleanness:4 “‘Any bed the man with a discharge lies on will be unclean, and anything he sits on will be unclean. 5 Anyone who touches his bed must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening. 6Whoever sits on anything that the man with a discharge sat on must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening.</p>
<p>7“‘Whoever touches the man who has a discharge must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening.</p>
<p>8“‘If the man with the discharge spits on anyone who is clean, they must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening.</p>
<p>9 “‘Everything the man sits on when riding will be unclean, 10and whoever touches any of the things that were under him will be unclean till evening; whoever picks up those things must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening.</p>
<p>11“‘Anyone the man with a discharge touches without rinsing his hands with water must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening.</p>
<p>12“‘A clay pot that the man touches must be broken, and any wooden article is to be rinsed with water.</p>
<p>13 “‘When a man is cleansed from his discharge, he is to count off seven days for his ceremonial cleansing; he must wash his clothes and bathe himself with fresh water, and he will be clean. 14 On the eighth day he must take two doves or two young pigeons and come before the LORD to the entrance to the tent of meeting and give them to the priest. 15 The priest is to sacrifice them, the one for a sin offering[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-3184a">a</a>]and the other for a burnt offering. In this way he will make atonement before the LORD for the man because of his discharge.</p>
<p>16 “‘When a man has an emission of semen, he must bathe his whole body with water, and he will be unclean till evening. 17 Any clothing or leather that has semen on it must be washed with water, and it will be unclean till evening. 18When a man has sexual relations with a woman and there is an emission of semen, both of them must bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening.</p>
<p>19“‘When a woman has her regular flow of blood, the impurity of her monthly period will last seven days, and anyone who touches her will be unclean till evening.</p>
<p>20 “‘Anything she lies on during her period will be unclean, and anything she sits on will be unclean. 21 Anyone who touches her bed will be unclean; they must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening. 22 Anyone who touches anything she sits on will be unclean; they must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening. 23Whether it is the bed or anything she was sitting on, when anyone touches it, they will be unclean till evening.</p>
<p>24“‘If a man has sexual relations with her and her monthly flow touches him, he will be unclean for seven days; any bed he lies on will be unclean.</p>
<p>25 “‘When a woman has a discharge of blood for many days at a time other than her monthly period or has a discharge that continues beyond her period, she will be unclean as long as she has the discharge, just as in the days of her period. 26 Any bed she lies on while her discharge continues will be unclean, as is her bed during her monthly period, and anything she sits on will be unclean, as during her period. 27Anyone who touches them will be unclean; they must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening.</p>
<p>28 “‘When she is cleansed from her discharge, she must count off seven days, and after that she will be ceremonially clean. 29 On the eighth day she must take two doves or two young pigeons and bring them to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 30The priest is to sacrifice one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. In this way he will make atonement for her before the LORD for the uncleanness of her discharge.</p>
<p>31 “‘You must keep the Israelites separate from things that make them unclean, so they will not die in their uncleanness for defiling my dwelling place,[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-3200b">b</a>]which is among them.’”</p>
<p>32 These are the regulations for a man with a discharge, for anyone made unclean by an emission of semen, 33for a woman in her monthly period, for a man or a woman with a discharge, and for a man who has sexual relations with a woman who is ceremonially unclean.</p>
<h4>Leviticus 16</h4>
<h5>The Day of Atonement</h5>
<p>1 The LORD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron who died when they approached the LORD. 2The LORD said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come whenever he chooses into the Most Holy Place behind the curtain in front of the atonement cover on the ark, or else he will die. For I will appear in the cloud over the atonement cover.</p>
<p>3 “This is how Aaron is to enter the Most Holy Place: He must first bring a young bull for a sin offering[<a title="See footnote c" href="#fen-NIV-3205c">c</a>] and a ram for a burnt offering. 4 He is to put on the sacred linen tunic, with linen undergarments next to his body; he is to tie the linen sash around him and put on the linen turban. These are sacred garments; so he must bathe himself with water before he puts them on. 5From the Israelite community he is to take two male goats for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.</p>
<p>6 “Aaron is to offer the bull for his own sin offering to make atonement for himself and his household. 7 Then he is to take the two goats and present them before the LORD at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 8 He is to cast lots for the two goats—one lot for the LORD and the other for the scapegoat.[<a title="See footnote d" href="#fen-NIV-3210d">d</a>] 9 Aaron shall bring the goat whose lot falls to the LORD and sacrifice it for a sin offering. 10But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the LORD to be used for making atonement by sending it into the wilderness as a scapegoat.</p>
<p>11 “Aaron shall bring the bull for his own sin offering to make atonement for himself and his household, and he is to slaughter the bull for his own sin offering. 12 He is to take a censer full of burning coals from the altar before the LORD and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense and take them behind the curtain. 13 He is to put the incense on the fire before the LORD, and the smoke of the incense will conceal the atonement cover above the tablets of the covenant law, so that he will not die. 14He is to take some of the bull’s blood and with his finger sprinkle it on the front of the atonement cover; then he shall sprinkle some of it with his finger seven times before the atonement cover.</p>
<p>15 “He shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people and take its blood behind the curtain and do with it as he did with the bull’s blood: He shall sprinkle it on the atonement cover and in front of it. 16 In this way he will make atonement for the Most Holy Place because of the uncleanness and rebellion of the Israelites, whatever their sins have been. He is to do the same for the tent of meeting, which is among them in the midst of their uncleanness. 17No one is to be in the tent of meeting from the time Aaron goes in to make atonement in the Most Holy Place until he comes out, having made atonement for himself, his household and the whole community of Israel.</p>
<p>18 “Then he shall come out to the altar that is before the LORD and make atonement for it. He shall take some of the bull’s blood and some of the goat’s blood and put it on all the horns of the altar. 19He shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times to cleanse it and to consecrate it from the uncleanness of the Israelites.</p>
<p>20 “When Aaron has finished making atonement for the Most Holy Place, the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall bring forward the live goat. 21 He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites—all their sins—and put them on the goat’s head. He shall send the goat away into the wilderness in the care of someone appointed for the task. 22The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a remote place; and the man shall release it in the wilderness.</p>
<p>23 “Then Aaron is to go into the tent of meeting and take off the linen garments he put on before he entered the Most Holy Place, and he is to leave them there. 24 He shall bathe himself with water in the sanctuary area and put on his regular garments. Then he shall come out and sacrifice the burnt offering for himself and the burnt offering for the people, to make atonement for himself and for the people. 25He shall also burn the fat of the sin offering on the altar.</p>
<p>26 “The man who releases the goat as a scapegoat must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water; afterward he may come into the camp. 27 The bull and the goat for the sin offerings, whose blood was brought into the Most Holy Place to make atonement, must be taken outside the camp; their hides, flesh and intestines are to be burned up. 28 The man who burns them must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water; afterward he may come into the camp.</p>

<h4>Mark 7</h4>
<h5>That Which Defiles</h5>
<p>1 The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus 2 and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. 4 When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-24468a">a</a>])5So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”</p>
<p>6 He replied, <span>“Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:</span></p>
<p><span>“‘These people honor me with their lips,</span>    <span>but their hearts are far from me.</span> <span>7 They worship me in vain;</span>    <span>their teachings are merely human rules.’[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-24471b">b</a>]</span></p>
<p><span>8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”</span></p>
<p>9 And he continued, <span>“You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[<a title="See footnote c" href="#fen-NIV-24473c">c</a>] your own traditions!</span> <span>10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’[<a title="See footnote d" href="#fen-NIV-24474d">d</a>] and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[<a title="See footnote e" href="#fen-NIV-24474e">e</a>]</span> <span>11 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)—</span> <span>12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother.</span> <span>13 Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”</span></p>
<p>14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, <span>“Listen to me, everyone, and understand this.</span> <span>15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.”</span> <span>[16] [<a title="See footnote f" href="#fen-NIV-24480f">f</a>]</span></p>
<p>17 After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable. <span>18 “Are you so dull?”</span> he asked. <span>“Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them?</span> <span>19 For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.”</span>(In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.)</p>
<p>20 He went on: <span>“What comes out of a person is what defiles them.</span> <span>21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder,</span> <span>22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.</span> <span>23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”</span></p>

<h3>Psalm 40:11-17</h3>

<div>
<p>11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, LORD;    may your love and faithfulness always protect me. 12 For troubles without number surround me;    my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head,    and my heart fails within me. 13Be pleased to save me, LORD;    come quickly, LORD, to help me.</p>
<p>14 May all who want to take my life    be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin    be turned back in disgrace. 15 May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”    be appalled at their own shame. 16But may all who seek you    rejoice and be glad in you; may those who long for your saving help always say,    “The LORD is great!”</p>
<p>17 But as for me, I am poor and needy;    may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer;    you are my God, do not delay.</p>

<h4>Leviticus 14</h4>
<h5>Cleansing From Defiling Skin Diseases</h5>
<p>1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 “These are the regulations for any diseased person at the time of their ceremonial cleansing, when they are brought to the priest: 3 The priest is to go outside the camp and examine them. If they have been healed of their defiling skin disease,[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-3115a">a</a>] 4 the priest shall order that two live clean birds and some cedar wood, scarlet yarn and hyssop be brought for the person to be cleansed. 5 Then the priest shall order that one of the birds be killed over fresh water in a clay pot. 6 He is then to take the live bird and dip it, together with the cedar wood, the scarlet yarn and the hyssop, into the blood of the bird that was killed over the fresh water. 7Seven times he shall sprinkle the one to be cleansed of the defiling disease, and then pronounce them clean. After that, he is to release the live bird in the open fields.8 “The person to be cleansed must wash their clothes, shave off all their hair and bathe with water; then they will be ceremonially clean. After this they may come into the camp, but they must stay outside their tent for seven days. 9On the seventh day they must shave off all their hair; they must shave their head, their beard, their eyebrows and the rest of their hair. They must wash their clothes and bathe themselves with water, and they will be clean.</p>
<p>10 “On the eighth day they must bring two male lambs and one ewe lamb a year old, each without defect, along with three-tenths of an ephah[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-3122b">b</a>] of the finest flour mixed with olive oil for a grain offering, and one log[<a title="See footnote c" href="#fen-NIV-3122c">c</a>] of oil. 11The priest who pronounces them clean shall present both the one to be cleansed and their offerings before the LORD at the entrance to the tent of meeting.</p>
<p>12 “Then the priest is to take one of the male lambs and offer it as a guilt offering, along with the log of oil; he shall wave them before the LORD as a wave offering. 13 He is to slaughter the lamb in the sanctuary area where the sin offering[<a title="See footnote d" href="#fen-NIV-3125d">d</a>] and the burnt offering are slaughtered. Like the sin offering, the guilt offering belongs to the priest; it is most holy. 14 The priest is to take some of the blood of the guilt offering and put it on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot. 15 The priest shall then take some of the log of oil, pour it in the palm of his own left hand, 16 dip his right forefinger into the oil in his palm, and with his finger sprinkle some of it before the LORD seven times. 17 The priest is to put some of the oil remaining in his palm on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot, on top of the blood of the guilt offering. 18The rest of the oil in his palm the priest shall put on the head of the one to be cleansed and make atonement for them before the LORD.</p>
<p>19 “Then the priest is to sacrifice the sin offering and make atonement for the one to be cleansed from their uncleanness. After that, the priest shall slaughter the burnt offering 20and offer it on the altar, together with the grain offering, and make atonement for them, and they will be clean.</p>
<p>21 “If, however, they are poor and cannot afford these, they must take one male lamb as a guilt offering to be waved to make atonement for them, together with a tenth of an ephah[<a title="See footnote e" href="#fen-NIV-3133e">e</a>] of the finest flour mixed with olive oil for a grain offering, a log of oil, 22and two doves or two young pigeons, such as they can afford, one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering.</p>
<p>23 “On the eighth day they must bring them for their cleansing to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting, before the LORD. 24 The priest is to take the lamb for the guilt offering, together with the log of oil, and wave them before the LORD as a wave offering. 25 He shall slaughter the lamb for the guilt offering and take some of its blood and put it on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot. 26 The priest is to pour some of the oil into the palm of his own left hand, 27 and with his right forefinger sprinkle some of the oil from his palm seven times before the LORD. 28 Some of the oil in his palm he is to put on the same places he put the blood of the guilt offering—on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot. 29 The rest of the oil in his palm the priest shall put on the head of the one to be cleansed, to make atonement for them before the LORD. 30 Then he shall sacrifice the doves or the young pigeons, such as the person can afford, 31one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering, together with the grain offering. In this way the priest will make atonement before the LORD on behalf of the one to be cleansed.”</p>
<p>32These are the regulations for anyone who has a defiling skin disease and who cannot afford the regular offerings for their cleansing.</p>
<h5>Cleansing From Defiling Molds</h5>
<p>33 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 34 “When you enter the land of Canaan, which I am giving you as your possession, and I put a spreading mold in a house in that land, 35 the owner of the house must go and tell the priest, ‘I have seen something that looks like a defiling mold in my house.’ 36 The priest is to order the house to be emptied before he goes in to examine the mold, so that nothing in the house will be pronounced unclean. After this the priest is to go in and inspect the house. 37 He is to examine the mold on the walls, and if it has greenish or reddish depressions that appear to be deeper than the surface of the wall, 38 the priest shall go out the doorway of the house and close it up for seven days. 39 On the seventh day the priest shall return to inspect the house. If the mold has spread on the walls, 40 he is to order that the contaminated stones be torn out and thrown into an unclean place outside the town. 41 He must have all the inside walls of the house scraped and the material that is scraped off dumped into an unclean place outside the town. 42Then they are to take other stones to replace these and take new clay and plaster the house.</p>
<p>43 “If the defiling mold reappears in the house after the stones have been torn out and the house scraped and plastered, 44 the priest is to go and examine it and, if the mold has spread in the house, it is a persistent defiling mold; the house is unclean. 45It must be torn down—its stones, timbers and all the plaster—and taken out of the town to an unclean place.</p>
<p>46 “Anyone who goes into the house while it is closed up will be unclean till evening. 47Anyone who sleeps or eats in the house must wash their clothes.</p>
<p>48 “But if the priest comes to examine it and the mold has not spread after the house has been plastered, he shall pronounce the house clean, because the defiling mold is gone. 49 To purify the house he is to take two birds and some cedar wood, scarlet yarn and hyssop. 50 He shall kill one of the birds over fresh water in a clay pot. 51 Then he is to take the cedar wood, the hyssop, the scarlet yarn and the live bird, dip them into the blood of the dead bird and the fresh water, and sprinkle the house seven times. 52 He shall purify the house with the bird’s blood, the fresh water, the live bird, the cedar wood, the hyssop and the scarlet yarn. 53Then he is to release the live bird in the open fields outside the town. In this way he will make atonement for the house, and it will be clean.”</p>
<p>54 These are the regulations for any defiling skin disease, for a sore, 55 for defiling molds in fabric or in a house, 56 and for a swelling, a rash or a shiny spot, 57to determine when something is clean or unclean.</p>
<p>These are the regulations for defiling skin diseases and defiling molds.</p>

<h5>Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand</h5>
<p>30 The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, <span>“Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”</span>32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.</p>
<p>35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. 36Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”</p>
<p>37 But he answered, <span>“You give them something to eat.”</span></p>
<p>They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-24445a">a</a>]! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”</p>
<p><span>38 “How many loaves do you have?”</span> he asked. <span>“Go and see.”</span></p>
<p>When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”</p>
<p>39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. 44The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.</p>
<h5>Jesus Walks on the Water</h5>
<p>45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.</p>
<p>47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, 50because they all saw him and were terrified.</p>
<p>Immediately he spoke to them and said, <span>“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”</span> 51 Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, 52for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.</p>
<p>53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.</p>

<h4>Leviticus 13</h4>
<h5>Regulations About Defiling Skin Diseases</h5>
<p>1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 2 “When anyone has a swelling or a rash or a shiny spot on their skin that may be a defiling skin disease,[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-3055a">a</a>] they must be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-3055b">b</a>] who is a priest. 3 The priest is to examine the sore on the skin, and if the hair in the sore has turned white and the sore appears to be more than skin deep, it is a defiling skin disease. When the priest examines that person, he shall pronounce them ceremonially unclean. 4 If the shiny spot on the skin is white but does not appear to be more than skin deep and the hair in it has not turned white, the priest is to isolate the affected person for seven days. 5 On the seventh day the priest is to examine them, and if he sees that the sore is unchanged and has not spread in the skin, he is to isolate them for another seven days. 6 On the seventh day the priest is to examine them again, and if the sore has faded and has not spread in the skin, the priest shall pronounce them clean; it is only a rash. They must wash their clothes, and they will be clean. 7 But if the rash does spread in their skin after they have shown themselves to the priest to be pronounced clean, they must appear before the priest again. 8The priest is to examine that person, and if the rash has spread in the skin, he shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease.9 “When anyone has a defiling skin disease, they must be brought to the priest. 10 The priest is to examine them, and if there is a white swelling in the skin that has turned the hair white and if there is raw flesh in the swelling, 11it is a chronic skin disease and the priest shall pronounce them unclean. He is not to isolate them, because they are already unclean.</p>
<p>12 “If the disease breaks out all over their skin and, so far as the priest can see, it covers all the skin of the affected person from head to foot, 13 the priest is to examine them, and if the disease has covered their whole body, he shall pronounce them clean. Since it has all turned white, they are clean. 14 But whenever raw flesh appears on them, they will be unclean. 15 When the priest sees the raw flesh, he shall pronounce them unclean. The raw flesh is unclean; they have a defiling disease. 16 If the raw flesh changes and turns white, they must go to the priest. 17The priest is to examine them, and if the sores have turned white, the priest shall pronounce the affected person clean; then they will be clean.</p>
<p>18 “When someone has a boil on their skin and it heals, 19 and in the place where the boil was, a white swelling or reddish-white spot appears, they must present themselves to the priest. 20 The priest is to examine it, and if it appears to be more than skin deep and the hair in it has turned white, the priest shall pronounce that person unclean. It is a defiling skin disease that has broken out where the boil was. 21 But if, when the priest examines it, there is no white hair in it and it is not more than skin deep and has faded, then the priest is to isolate them for seven days. 22 If it is spreading in the skin, the priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling disease. 23But if the spot is unchanged and has not spread, it is only a scar from the boil, and the priest shall pronounce them clean.</p>
<p>24 “When someone has a burn on their skin and a reddish-white or white spot appears in the raw flesh of the burn, 25 the priest is to examine the spot, and if the hair in it has turned white, and it appears to be more than skin deep, it is a defiling disease that has broken out in the burn. The priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease. 26 But if the priest examines it and there is no white hair in the spot and if it is not more than skin deep and has faded, then the priest is to isolate them for seven days. 27 On the seventh day the priest is to examine that person, and if it is spreading in the skin, the priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease. 28If, however, the spot is unchanged and has not spread in the skin but has faded, it is a swelling from the burn, and the priest shall pronounce them clean; it is only a scar from the burn.</p>
<p>29 “If a man or woman has a sore on their head or chin, 30 the priest is to examine the sore, and if it appears to be more than skin deep and the hair in it is yellow and thin, the priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease on the head or chin. 31 But if, when the priest examines the sore, it does not seem to be more than skin deep and there is no black hair in it, then the priest is to isolate the affected person for seven days. 32 On the seventh day the priest is to examine the sore, and if it has not spread and there is no yellow hair in it and it does not appear to be more than skin deep, 33 then the man or woman must shave themselves, except for the affected area, and the priest is to keep them isolated another seven days. 34 On the seventh day the priest is to examine the sore, and if it has not spread in the skin and appears to be no more than skin deep, the priest shall pronounce them clean. They must wash their clothes, and they will be clean. 35 But if the sore does spread in the skin after they are pronounced clean, 36 the priest is to examine them, and if he finds that the sore has spread in the skin, he does not need to look for yellow hair; they are unclean. 37If, however, the sore is unchanged so far as the priest can see, and if black hair has grown in it, the affected person is healed. They are clean, and the priest shall pronounce them clean.</p>
<p>38 “When a man or woman has white spots on the skin, 39the priest is to examine them, and if the spots are dull white, it is a harmless rash that has broken out on the skin; they are clean.</p>
<p>40 “A man who has lost his hair and is bald is clean. 41 If he has lost his hair from the front of his scalp and has a bald forehead, he is clean. 42 But if he has a reddish-white sore on his bald head or forehead, it is a defiling disease breaking out on his head or forehead. 43 The priest is to examine him, and if the swollen sore on his head or forehead is reddish-white like a defiling skin disease, 44the man is diseased and is unclean. The priest shall pronounce him unclean because of the sore on his head.</p>
<p>45 “Anyone with such a defiling disease must wear torn clothes, let their hair be unkempt,[<a title="See footnote c" href="#fen-NIV-3098c">c</a>] cover the lower part of their face and cry out, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’ 46As long as they have the disease they remain unclean. They must live alone; they must live outside the camp.</p>
<h5>Regulations About Defiling Molds</h5>
<p>47 “As for any fabric that is spoiled with a defiling mold—any woolen or linen clothing, 48 any woven or knitted material of linen or wool, any leather or anything made of leather— 49 if the affected area in the fabric, the leather, the woven or knitted material, or any leather article, is greenish or reddish, it is a defiling mold and must be shown to the priest. 50 The priest is to examine the affected area and isolate the article for seven days. 51 On the seventh day he is to examine it, and if the mold has spread in the fabric, the woven or knitted material, or the leather, whatever its use, it is a persistent defiling mold; the article is unclean. 52He must burn the fabric, the woven or knitted material of wool or linen, or any leather article that has been spoiled; because the defiling mold is persistent, the article must be burned.</p>
<p>53 “But if, when the priest examines it, the mold has not spread in the fabric, the woven or knitted material, or the leather article, 54 he shall order that the spoiled article be washed. Then he is to isolate it for another seven days. 55 After the article has been washed, the priest is to examine it again, and if the mold has not changed its appearance, even though it has not spread, it is unclean. Burn it, no matter which side of the fabric has been spoiled. 56 If, when the priest examines it, the mold has faded after the article has been washed, he is to tear the spoiled part out of the fabric, the leather, or the woven or knitted material. 57 But if it reappears in the fabric, in the woven or knitted material, or in the leather article, it is a spreading mold; whatever has the mold must be burned. 58Any fabric, woven or knitted material, or any leather article that has been washed and is rid of the mold, must be washed again. Then it will be clean.”</p>
<p>59 These are the regulations concerning defiling molds in woolen or linen clothing, woven or knitted material, or any leather article, for pronouncing them clean or unclean.</p>

<h4>Mark 6</h4>
<h5>A Prophet Without Honor</h5>
<p>1 Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.   “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-24411a">a</a>]Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.</p>
<p>4 Jesus said to them, <span>“A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”</span> 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6He was amazed at their lack of faith.</p>
<h5>Jesus Sends Out the Twelve</h5>
<p>Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. 7Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.</p>
<p>8 These were his instructions: <span>“Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.</span> <span>9 Wear sandals but not an extra shirt.</span> <span>10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.</span> <span>11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”</span></p>
<p>12 They went out and preached that people should repent. 13They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.</p>
<h5>John the Baptist Beheaded</h5>
<p>14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying,[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-24422b">b</a>]“John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”</p>
<p>15Others said, “He is Elijah.”</p>
<p>And still others claimed, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago.”</p>
<p>16But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!”</p>
<p>17 For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” 19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled[<a title="See footnote c" href="#fen-NIV-24428c">c</a>]; yet he liked to listen to him.</p>
<p>21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. 22 When the daughter of[<a title="See footnote d" href="#fen-NIV-24430d">d</a>]Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.</p>
<p>The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”</p>
<p>24She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?”</p>
<p>“The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.</p>
<p>25At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”</p>
<p>26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, 28 and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29 On hearing of this, John’s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.</p>

<h4>Psalm 39</h4>
<h5>Psalm 39[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-14514a">a</a>]</h5>
<p><strong>For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.</strong>1 I said, “I will watch my ways    and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth    while in the presence of the wicked.” 2 So I remained utterly silent,    not even saying anything good. But my anguish increased; 3my heart grew hot within me. While I meditated, the fire burned;    then I spoke with my tongue:</p>
<p>4 “Show me, LORD, my life’s end    and the number of my days;    let me know how fleeting my life is. 5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth;    the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath,    even those who seem secure.[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-14518b">b</a>]</p>
<p>6“Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom;    in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth    without knowing whose it will finally be.</p>
<p>7 “But now, Lord, what do I look for?    My hope is in you. 8 Save me from all my transgressions;    do not make me the scorn of fools. 9 I was silent; I would not open my mouth,    for you are the one who has done this. 10 Remove your scourge from me;    I am overcome by the blow of your hand. 11When you rebuke and discipline anyone for their sin,    you consume their wealth like a moth—    surely everyone is but a breath.</p>
<p>12 “Hear my prayer, LORD,    listen to my cry for help;    do not be deaf to my weeping. I dwell with you as a foreigner,    a stranger, as all my ancestors were. 13 Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again    before I depart and am no more.”</p>

<h4>Leviticus 11</h4>
<h5>Clean and Unclean Food</h5>
<p>1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 2 “Say to the Israelites: ‘Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat: 3You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud.4 “‘There are some that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof, but you must not eat them. The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is ceremonially unclean for you. 5 The hyrax, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you. 6 The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you. 7 And the pig, though it has a divided hoof, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. 8You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.</p>
<p>9 “‘Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams you may eat any that have fins and scales. 10 But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales—whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water—you are to regard as unclean. 11 And since you are to regard them as unclean, you must not eat their meat; you must regard their carcasses as unclean. 12Anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales is to be regarded as unclean by you.</p>
<p>13 “‘These are the birds you are to regard as unclean and not eat because they are unclean: the eagle,[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-3011a">a</a>] the vulture, the black vulture, 14 the red kite, any kind of black kite, 15 any kind of raven, 16 the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, 17 the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, 18 the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey, 19the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.</p>
<p>20 “‘All flying insects that walk on all fours are to be regarded as unclean by you. 21 There are, however, some flying insects that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground. 22 Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper. 23But all other flying insects that have four legs you are to regard as unclean.</p>
<p>24 “‘You will make yourselves unclean by these; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening. 25Whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.</p>
<p>26 “‘Every animal that does not have a divided hoof or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you; whoever touches the carcass of any of them will be unclean. 27 Of all the animals that walk on all fours, those that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening. 28Anyone who picks up their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. These animals are unclean for you.</p>
<p>29 “‘Of the animals that move along the ground, these are unclean for you: the weasel, the rat, any kind of great lizard, 30 the gecko, the monitor lizard, the wall lizard, the skink and the chameleon. 31 Of all those that move along the ground, these are unclean for you. Whoever touches them when they are dead will be unclean till evening. 32 When one of them dies and falls on something, that article, whatever its use, will be unclean, whether it is made of wood, cloth, hide or sackcloth. Put it in water; it will be unclean till evening, and then it will be clean. 33 If one of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean, and you must break the pot. 34 Any food you are allowed to eat that has come into contact with water from any such pot is unclean, and any liquid that is drunk from such a pot is unclean. 35 Anything that one of their carcasses falls on becomes unclean; an oven or cooking pot must be broken up. They are unclean, and you are to regard them as unclean. 36 A spring, however, or a cistern for collecting water remains clean, but anyone who touches one of these carcasses is unclean. 37 If a carcass falls on any seeds that are to be planted, they remain clean. 38But if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you.</p>
<p>39 “‘If an animal that you are allowed to eat dies, anyone who touches its carcass will be unclean till evening. 40Anyone who eats some of its carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. Anyone who picks up the carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.</p>
<p>41 “‘Every creature that moves along the ground is to be regarded as unclean; it is not to be eaten. 42 You are not to eat any creature that moves along the ground, whether it moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet; it is unclean. 43 Do not defile yourselves by any of these creatures. Do not make yourselves unclean by means of them or be made unclean by them. 44 I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground. 45I am the LORD, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.</p>
<p>46 “‘These are the regulations concerning animals, birds, every living thing that moves about in the water and every creature that moves along the ground. 47You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between living creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten.’”</p>
<h4>Leviticus 12</h4>
<h5>Purification After Childbirth</h5>
<p>1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 “Say to the Israelites: ‘A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is unclean during her monthly period. 3 On the eighth day the boy is to be circumcised. 4 Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified from her bleeding. She must not touch anything sacred or go to the sanctuary until the days of her purification are over. 5If she gives birth to a daughter, for two weeks the woman will be unclean, as during her period. Then she must wait sixty-six days to be purified from her bleeding.</p>
<p>6 “‘When the days of her purification for a son or daughter are over, she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting a year-old lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a dove for a sin offering.[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-3051b">b</a>] 7He shall offer them before the LORD to make atonement for her, and then she will be ceremonially clean from her flow of blood.</p>
<p>“‘These are the regulations for the woman who gives birth to a boy or a girl. 8 But if she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean.’”</p>

<h3>Mark 5:21-43</h3>

<h5>Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman</h5>
<p>21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. 22 Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” 24So Jesus went with him.   A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” 29Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.</p>
<p>30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, <span>“Who touched my clothes?”</span></p>
<p>31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, <span>‘Who touched me?’</span>”</p>
<p>32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, <span>“Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”</span></p>
<p>35While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”</p>
<p>36 Overhearing[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-24401a">a</a>] what they said, Jesus told him, <span>“Don’t be afraid; just believe.”</span></p>
<p>37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, <span>“Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”</span> 40But they laughed at him.</p>
<p>After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41 He took her by the hand and said to her, <span><em>“Talitha koum!”</em></span> (which means <span>“Little girl, I say to you, get up!”</span>). 42 Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.</p>

<h4>Psalm 38</h4>
<h5>Psalm 38[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-14492a">a</a>]</h5>
<p><strong>A psalm of David. A petition.</strong>1 LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger    or discipline me in your wrath. 2 Your arrows have pierced me,    and your hand has come down on me. 3 Because of your wrath there is no health in my body;    there is no soundness in my bones because of my sin. 4My guilt has overwhelmed me    like a burden too heavy to bear.</p>
<p>5 My wounds fester and are loathsome    because of my sinful folly. 6 I am bowed down and brought very low;    all day long I go about mourning. 7 My back is filled with searing pain;    there is no health in my body. 8I am feeble and utterly crushed;    I groan in anguish of heart.</p>
<p>9 All my longings lie open before you, Lord;    my sighing is not hidden from you. 10 My heart pounds, my strength fails me;    even the light has gone from my eyes. 11 My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds;    my neighbors stay far away. 12Those who want to kill me set their traps,    those who would harm me talk of my ruin;    all day long they scheme and lie.</p>
<p>13 I am like the deaf, who cannot hear,    like the mute, who cannot speak; 14 I have become like one who does not hear,    whose mouth can offer no reply. 15 LORD, I wait for you;    you will answer, Lord my God. 16For I said, “Do not let them gloat    or exalt themselves over me when my feet slip.”</p>
<p>17 For I am about to fall,    and my pain is ever with me. 18 I confess my iniquity;    I am troubled by my sin. 19 Many have become my enemies without cause[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-14510b">b</a>];    those who hate me without reason are numerous. 20Those who repay my good with evil    lodge accusations against me,    though I seek only to do what is good.</p>
<p>21 LORD, do not forsake me;    do not be far from me, my God. 22 Come quickly to help me,    my Lord and my Savior.</p>

<h3>Leviticus 9:7-10:20</h3>
<p>New International Version (NIV)</p>
</div>
<div>
<p>7Moses said to Aaron, “Come to the altar and sacrifice your sin offering and your burnt offering and make atonement for yourself and the people; sacrifice the offering that is for the people and make atonement for them, as the LORD has commanded.”</p>
<p>8 So Aaron came to the altar and slaughtered the calf as a sin offering for himself. 9 His sons brought the blood to him, and he dipped his finger into the blood and put it on the horns of the altar; the rest of the blood he poured out at the base of the altar. 10 On the altar he burned the fat, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver from the sin offering, as the LORD commanded Moses; 11the flesh and the hide he burned up outside the camp.</p>
<p>12 Then he slaughtered the burnt offering. His sons handed him the blood, and he splashed it against the sides of the altar. 13 They handed him the burnt offering piece by piece, including the head, and he burned them on the altar. 14He washed the internal organs and the legs and burned them on top of the burnt offering on the altar.</p>
<p>15Aaron then brought the offering that was for the people. He took the goat for the people’s sin offering and slaughtered it and offered it for a sin offering as he did with the first one.</p>
<p>16 He brought the burnt offering and offered it in the prescribed way. 17He also brought the grain offering, took a handful of it and burned it on the altar in addition to the morning’s burnt offering.</p>
<p>18 He slaughtered the ox and the ram as the fellowship offering for the people. His sons handed him the blood, and he splashed it against the sides of the altar. 19 But the fat portions of the ox and the ram—the fat tail, the layer of fat, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver— 20 these they laid on the breasts, and then Aaron burned the fat on the altar. 21Aaron waved the breasts and the right thigh before the LORD as a wave offering, as Moses commanded.</p>
<p>22Then Aaron lifted his hands toward the people and blessed them. And having sacrificed the sin offering, the burnt offering and the fellowship offering, he stepped down.</p>
<p>23 Moses and Aaron then went into the tent of meeting. When they came out, they blessed the people; and the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people. 24Fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown.</p>
<h4>Leviticus 10</h4>
<h5>The Death of Nadab and Abihu</h5>
<p>1 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, contrary to his command. 2 So fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD. 3Moses then said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD spoke of when he said:</p>
<p>“‘Among those who approach me    I will be proved holy; in the sight of all the people    I will be honored.’”</p>
<p>Aaron remained silent.</p>
<p>4 Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel, and said to them, “Come here; carry your cousins outside the camp, away from the front of the sanctuary.” 5So they came and carried them, still in their tunics, outside the camp, as Moses ordered.</p>
<p>6 Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “Do not let your hair become unkempt[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-2984a">a</a>] and do not tear your clothes, or you will die and the LORD will be angry with the whole community. But your relatives, all the Israelites, may mourn for those the LORD has destroyed by fire. 7Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting or you will die, because the LORD’s anointing oil is on you.” So they did as Moses said.</p>
<p>8 Then the LORD said to Aaron, 9 “You and your sons are not to drink wine or other fermented drink whenever you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, 10 so that you can distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean, 11and so you can teach the Israelites all the decrees the LORD has given them through Moses.”</p>
<p>12 Moses said to Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, “Take the grain offering left over from the food offerings prepared without yeast and presented to the LORD and eat it beside the altar, for it is most holy. 13 Eat it in the sanctuary area, because it is your share and your sons’ share of the food offerings presented to the LORD; for so I have been commanded. 14 But you and your sons and your daughters may eat the breast that was waved and the thigh that was presented. Eat them in a ceremonially clean place; they have been given to you and your children as your share of the Israelites’ fellowship offerings. 15The thigh that was presented and the breast that was waved must be brought with the fat portions of the food offerings, to be waved before the LORD as a wave offering. This will be the perpetual share for you and your children, as the LORD has commanded.”</p>
<p>16 When Moses inquired about the goat of the sin offering[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-2994b">b</a>] and found that it had been burned up, he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, and asked, 17 “Why didn’t you eat the sin offering in the sanctuary area? It is most holy; it was given to you to take away the guilt of the community by making atonement for them before the LORD. 18Since its blood was not taken into the Holy Place, you should have eaten the goat in the sanctuary area, as I commanded.”</p>
<p>19 Aaron replied to Moses, “Today they sacrificed their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD, but such things as this have happened to me. Would the LORD have been pleased if I had eaten the sin offering today?” 20 When Moses heard this, he was satisfied.</p>
<div>
<h3>Mark 4:26-5:20</h3>
<p>New International Version (NIV)</p>
</div>
<div>
<h5>The Parable of the Growing Seed</h5>
<p>26 He also said, <span>“This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground.</span> <span>27 Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.</span> <span>28 All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head.</span> <span>29 As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”</span></p>
<h5>The Parable of the Mustard Seed</h5>
<p>30 Again he said, <span>“What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it?</span> <span>31 It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth.</span> <span>32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”</span>33 With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. 34He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.</p>
<h5>Jesus Calms the Storm</h5>
<p>35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, <span>“Let us go over to the other side.”</span> 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”</p>
<p>39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, <span>“Quiet! Be still!”</span>Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.</p>
<p>40 He said to his disciples, <span>“Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”</span></p>
<p>41They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”</p>
<h4>Mark 5</h4>
<h5>Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man</h5>
<p>1 They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-24366a">a</a>] 2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. 3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. 4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.</p>
<p>6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!” 8 For Jesus had said to him, <span>“Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”</span></p>
<p>9 Then Jesus asked him, <span>“What is your name?”</span></p>
<p>“My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” 10And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.</p>
<p>11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” 13He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.</p>
<p>14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. 17Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.</p>
<p>18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, <span>“Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”</span> 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-24385b">b</a>] how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.</p>

<p>30 The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom,    and their tongues speak what is just. 31The law of their God is in their hearts;    their feet do not slip.</p>
<p>32 The wicked lie in wait for the righteous,    intent on putting them to death; 33but the LORD will not leave them in the power of the wicked    or let them be condemned when brought to trial.</p>
<p>34Hope in the LORD    and keep his way. He will exalt you to inherit the land;    when the wicked are destroyed, you will see it.</p>
<p>35 I have seen a wicked and ruthless man    flourishing like a luxuriant native tree, 36but he soon passed away and was no more;    though I looked for him, he could not be found.</p>
<p>37 Consider the blameless, observe the upright;    a future awaits those who seek peace.[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-14488a">a</a>] 38 But all sinners will be destroyed;    there will be no future[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-14489b">b</a>]for the wicked.</p>
<p>39 The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD;    he is their stronghold in time of trouble. 40 The LORD helps them and delivers them;    he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,    because they take refuge in him.</p>

<h3>Leviticus 7:28-9:6</h3>
<p>New International Version (NIV)</p>
</div>
<div>
<h5>The Priests’ Share</h5>
<p>28 The LORD said to Moses, 29 “Say to the Israelites: ‘Anyone who brings a fellowship offering to the LORD is to bring part of it as their sacrifice to the LORD. 30 With their own hands they are to present the food offering to the LORD; they are to bring the fat, together with the breast, and wave the breast before the LORD as a wave offering. 31 The priest shall burn the fat on the altar, but the breast belongs to Aaron and his sons. 32 You are to give the right thigh of your fellowship offerings to the priest as a contribution. 33 The son of Aaron who offers the blood and the fat of the fellowship offering shall have the right thigh as his share. 34From the fellowship offerings of the Israelites, I have taken the breast that is waved and the thigh that is presented and have given them to Aaron the priest and his sons as their perpetual share from the Israelites.’”35 This is the portion of the food offerings presented to the LORD that were allotted to Aaron and his sons on the day they were presented to serve the LORD as priests. 36On the day they were anointed, the LORD commanded that the Israelites give this to them as their perpetual share for the generations to come.</p>
<p>37 These, then, are the regulations for the burnt offering, the grain offering, the sin offering, the guilt offering, the ordination offering and the fellowship offering, 38which the LORD gave Moses at Mount Sinai in the Desert of Sinai on the day he commanded the Israelites to bring their offerings to the LORD.</p>
<h4>Leviticus 8</h4>
<h5>The Ordination of Aaron and His Sons</h5>
<p>1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 “Bring Aaron and his sons, their garments, the anointing oil, the bull for the sin offering,[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-2920a">a</a>] the two rams and the basket containing bread made without yeast, 3 and gather the entire assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting.” 4Moses did as the LORD commanded him, and the assembly gathered at the entrance to the tent of meeting.</p>
<p>5 Moses said to the assembly, “This is what the LORD has commanded to be done.” 6 Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and washed them with water. 7 He put the tunic on Aaron, tied the sash around him, clothed him with the robe and put the ephod on him. He also fastened the ephod with a decorative waistband, which he tied around him. 8 He placed the breastpiece on him and put the Urim and Thummim in the breastpiece. 9Then he placed the turban on Aaron’s head and set the gold plate, the sacred emblem, on the front of it, as the LORD commanded Moses.</p>
<p>10 Then Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and everything in it, and so consecrated them. 11 He sprinkled some of the oil on the altar seven times, anointing the altar and all its utensils and the basin with its stand, to consecrate them. 12 He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him to consecrate him. 13Then he brought Aaron’s sons forward, put tunics on them, tied sashes around them and fastened caps on them, as the LORD commanded Moses.</p>
<p>14 He then presented the bull for the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. 15 Moses slaughtered the bull and took some of the blood, and with his finger he put it on all the horns of the altar to purify the altar. He poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. So he consecrated it to make atonement for it. 16 Moses also took all the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, and both kidneys and their fat, and burned it on the altar. 17But the bull with its hide and its flesh and its intestines he burned up outside the camp, as the LORD commanded Moses.</p>
<p>18 He then presented the ram for the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. 19 Then Moses slaughtered the ram and splashed the blood against the sides of the altar. 20 He cut the ram into pieces and burned the head, the pieces and the fat. 21He washed the internal organs and the legs with water and burned the whole ram on the altar. It was a burnt offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the LORD, as the LORD commanded Moses.</p>
<p>22 He then presented the other ram, the ram for the ordination, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. 23 Moses slaughtered the ram and took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot. 24 Moses also brought Aaron’s sons forward and put some of the blood on the lobes of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands and on the big toes of their right feet. Then he splashed blood against the sides of the altar. 25 After that, he took the fat, the fat tail, all the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, both kidneys and their fat and the right thigh. 26 And from the basket of bread made without yeast, which was before the LORD, he took one thick loaf, one thick loaf with olive oil mixed in, and one thin loaf, and he put these on the fat portions and on the right thigh. 27 He put all these in the hands of Aaron and his sons, and they waved them before the LORD as a wave offering. 28 Then Moses took them from their hands and burned them on the altar on top of the burnt offering as an ordination offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the LORD. 29Moses also took the breast, which was his share of the ordination ram, and waved it before the LORD as a wave offering, as the LORD commanded Moses.</p>
<p>30Then Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood from the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments and on his sons and their garments. So he consecrated Aaron and his garments and his sons and their garments.</p>
<p>31 Moses then said to Aaron and his sons, “Cook the meat at the entrance to the tent of meeting and eat it there with the bread from the basket of ordination offerings, as I was commanded: ‘Aaron and his sons are to eat it.’ 32 Then burn up the rest of the meat and the bread. 33 Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting for seven days, until the days of your ordination are completed, for your ordination will last seven days. 34 What has been done today was commanded by the LORD to make atonement for you. 35You must stay at the entrance to the tent of meeting day and night for seven days and do what the LORD requires, so you will not die; for that is what I have been commanded.”</p>
<p>36So Aaron and his sons did everything the LORD commanded through Moses.</p>
<h4>Leviticus 9</h4>
<h5>The Priests Begin Their Ministry</h5>
<p>1 On the eighth day Moses summoned Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel. 2 He said to Aaron, “Take a bull calf for your sin offering[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-2956b">b</a>] and a ram for your burnt offering, both without defect, and present them before the LORD. 3 Then say to the Israelites: ‘Take a male goat for a sin offering, a calf and a lamb—both a year old and without defect—for a burnt offering, 4 and an ox[<a title="See footnote c" href="#fen-NIV-2958c">c</a>]and a ram for a fellowship offering to sacrifice before the LORD, together with a grain offering mixed with olive oil. For today the LORD will appear to you.’”</p>
<p>5 They took the things Moses commanded to the front of the tent of meeting, and the entire assembly came near and stood before the LORD. 6 Then Moses said, “This is what the LORD has commanded you to do, so that the glory of the LORD may appear to you.”</p>
<div>
<h3>Mark 3:31-4:25</h3>
<p>New International Version (NIV)</p>
</div>
<div>
<p>31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.”</p>
<p><span>33 “Who are my mother and my brothers?”</span>he asked.</p>
<p>34 Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, <span>“Here are my mother and my brothers!</span> <span>35 Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”</span></p>
<h4>Mark 4</h4>
<h5>The Parable of the Sower</h5>
<p>1 Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. 2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: <span>3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed.</span> <span>4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.</span> <span>5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow.</span> <span>6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.</span> <span>7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain.</span> <span>8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”</span></p>
<p>9 Then Jesus said, <span>“Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”</span></p>
<p>10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. 11 He told them, <span>“The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables</span> <span>12 so that,</span></p>
<p><span>“‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,</span>    <span>and ever hearing but never understanding;</span> <span>otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-24336a">a</a>]”</span></p>
<p>13 Then Jesus said to them, <span>“Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable?</span> <span>14 The farmer sows the word.</span> <span>15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them.</span> <span>16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy.</span> <span>17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.</span> <span>18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word;</span> <span>19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.</span> <span>20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.”</span></p>
<h5>A Lamp on a Stand</h5>
<p>21 He said to them, <span>“Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand?</span> <span>22 For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open.</span> <span>23 If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.”</span></p>
<p><span>24 “Consider carefully what you hear,”</span> he continued. <span>“With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more.</span> <span>25 Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.”</span></p>
<div>
<h3>Psalm 37:12-29</h3>
<p>New International Version (NIV)</p>
</div>
<div>
<p>12 The wicked plot against the righteous    and gnash their teeth at them; 13but the Lord laughs at the wicked,    for he knows their day is coming.</p>
<p>14 The wicked draw the sword    and bend the bow to bring down the poor and needy,    to slay those whose ways are upright. 15But their swords will pierce their own hearts,    and their bows will be broken.</p>
<p>16 Better the little that the righteous have    than the wealth of many wicked; 17for the power of the wicked will be broken,    but the LORD upholds the righteous.</p>
<p>18 The blameless spend their days under the LORD’s care,    and their inheritance will endure forever. 19In times of disaster they will not wither;    in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.</p>
<p>20But the wicked will perish:    Though the LORD’s enemies are like the flowers of the field,    they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.</p>
<p>21 The wicked borrow and do not repay,    but the righteous give generously; 22those the LORD blesses will inherit the land,    but those he curses will be destroyed.</p>
<p>23 The LORD makes firm the steps    of the one who delights in him; 24though he may stumble, he will not fall,    for the LORD upholds him with his hand.</p>
<p>25 I was young and now I am old,    yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken    or their children begging bread. 26 They are always generous and lend freely;    their children will be a blessing.[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-14477a">a</a>]</p>
<p>27 Turn from evil and do good;    then you will dwell in the land forever. 28For the LORD loves the just    and will not forsake his faithful ones.</p>
<p>Wrongdoers will be completely destroyed[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-14479b">b</a>];    the offspring of the wicked will perish. 29 The righteous will inherit the land    and dwell in it forever.</p>

<h3>Leviticus 6-7:27</h3>
<p>New International Version (NIV)</p>
</div>
<div>
<h4>Leviticus 6</h4>
<p>1 [<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-2851a">a</a>]The LORD said to Moses: 2 “If anyone sins and is unfaithful to the LORD by deceiving a neighbor about something entrusted to them or left in their care or about something stolen, or if they cheat their neighbor, 3 or if they find lost property and lie about it, or if they swear falsely about any such sin that people may commit— 4 when they sin in any of these ways and realize their guilt, they must return what they have stolen or taken by extortion, or what was entrusted to them, or the lost property they found, 5 or whatever it was they swore falsely about. They must make restitution in full, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the owner on the day they present their guilt offering. 6 And as a penalty they must bring to the priest, that is, to the LORD, their guilt offering, a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value. 7In this way the priest will make atonement for them before the LORD, and they will be forgiven for any of the things they did that made them guilty.”</p>
<h5>The Burnt Offering</h5>
<p>8 The LORD said to Moses: 9 “Give Aaron and his sons this command: ‘These are the regulations for the burnt offering: The burnt offering is to remain on the altar hearth throughout the night, till morning, and the fire must be kept burning on the altar. 10 The priest shall then put on his linen clothes, with linen undergarments next to his body, and shall remove the ashes of the burnt offering that the fire has consumed on the altar and place them beside the altar. 11 Then he is to take off these clothes and put on others, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a place that is ceremonially clean. 12 The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. Every morning the priest is to add firewood and arrange the burnt offering on the fire and burn the fat of the fellowship offerings on it. 13The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out.</p>
<h5>The Grain Offering</h5>
<p>14 “‘These are the regulations for the grain offering: Aaron’s sons are to bring it before the LORD, in front of the altar. 15 The priest is to take a handful of the finest flour and some olive oil, together with all the incense on the grain offering, and burn the memorial[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-2865b">b</a>] portion on the altar as an aroma pleasing to the LORD. 16 Aaron and his sons shall eat the rest of it, but it is to be eaten without yeast in the sanctuary area; they are to eat it in the courtyard of the tent of meeting. 17 It must not be baked with yeast; I have given it as their share of the food offerings presented to me. Like the sin offering[<a title="See footnote c" href="#fen-NIV-2867c">c</a>] and the guilt offering, it is most holy. 18 Any male descendant of Aaron may eat it. For all generations to come it is his perpetual share of the food offerings presented to the LORD. Whatever touches them will become holy.[<a title="See footnote d" href="#fen-NIV-2868d">d</a>]’”</p>
<p>19 The LORD also said to Moses, 20 “This is the offering Aaron and his sons are to bring to the LORD on the day he[<a title="See footnote e" href="#fen-NIV-2870e">e</a>] is anointed: a tenth of an ephah[<a title="See footnote f" href="#fen-NIV-2870f">f</a>] of the finest flour as a regular grain offering, half of it in the morning and half in the evening. 21 It must be prepared with oil on a griddle; bring it well-mixed and present the grain offering broken[<a title="See footnote g" href="#fen-NIV-2871g">g</a>] in pieces as an aroma pleasing to the LORD. 22 The son who is to succeed him as anointed priest shall prepare it. It is the LORD’s perpetual share and is to be burned completely. 23Every grain offering of a priest shall be burned completely; it must not be eaten.”</p>
<h5>The Sin Offering</h5>
<p>24 The LORD said to Moses, 25 “Say to Aaron and his sons: ‘These are the regulations for the sin offering: The sin offering is to be slaughtered before the LORD in the place the burnt offering is slaughtered; it is most holy. 26 The priest who offers it shall eat it; it is to be eaten in the sanctuary area, in the courtyard of the tent of meeting. 27 Whatever touches any of the flesh will become holy, and if any of the blood is spattered on a garment, you must wash it in the sanctuary area. 28 The clay pot the meat is cooked in must be broken; but if it is cooked in a bronze pot, the pot is to be scoured and rinsed with water. 29 Any male in a priest’s family may eat it; it is most holy. 30But any sin offering whose blood is brought into the tent of meeting to make atonement in the Holy Place must not be eaten; it must be burned up.</p>
<h4>Leviticus 7</h4>
<h5>The Guilt Offering</h5>
<p>1 “‘These are the regulations for the guilt offering, which is most holy: 2 The guilt offering is to be slaughtered in the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered, and its blood is to be splashed against the sides of the altar. 3 All its fat shall be offered: the fat tail and the fat that covers the internal organs, 4 both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which is to be removed with the kidneys. 5 The priest shall burn them on the altar as a food offering presented to the LORD. It is a guilt offering. 6Any male in a priest’s family may eat it, but it must be eaten in the sanctuary area; it is most holy.</p>
<p>7 “‘The same law applies to both the sin offering[<a title="See footnote h" href="#fen-NIV-2887h">h</a>] and the guilt offering: They belong to the priest who makes atonement with them. 8 The priest who offers a burnt offering for anyone may keep its hide for himself. 9 Every grain offering baked in an oven or cooked in a pan or on a griddle belongs to the priest who offers it, 10and every grain offering, whether mixed with olive oil or dry, belongs equally to all the sons of Aaron.</p>
<h5>The Fellowship Offering</h5>
<p>11“‘These are the regulations for the fellowship offering anyone may present to the LORD:</p>
<p>12 “‘If they offer it as an expression of thankfulness, then along with this thank offering they are to offer thick loaves made without yeast and with olive oil mixed in, thin loaves made without yeast and brushed with oil, and thick loaves of the finest flour well-kneaded and with oil mixed in. 13 Along with their fellowship offering of thanksgiving they are to present an offering with thick loaves of bread made with yeast. 14 They are to bring one of each kind as an offering, a contribution to the LORD; it belongs to the priest who splashes the blood of the fellowship offering against the altar. 15The meat of their fellowship offering of thanksgiving must be eaten on the day it is offered; they must leave none of it till morning.</p>
<p>16 “‘If, however, their offering is the result of a vow or is a freewill offering, the sacrifice shall be eaten on the day they offer it, but anything left over may be eaten on the next day. 17 Any meat of the sacrifice left over till the third day must be burned up. 18If any meat of the fellowship offering is eaten on the third day, the one who offered it will not be accepted. It will not be reckoned to their credit, for it has become impure; the person who eats any of it will be held responsible.</p>
<p>19 “‘Meat that touches anything ceremonially unclean must not be eaten; it must be burned up. As for other meat, anyone ceremonially clean may eat it. 20 But if anyone who is unclean eats any meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the LORD, they must be cut off from their people. 21 Anyone who touches something unclean—whether human uncleanness or an unclean animal or any unclean creature that moves along the ground[<a title="See footnote i" href="#fen-NIV-2901i">i</a>]—and then eats any of the meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the LORD must be cut off from their people.’”</p>
<h5>Eating Fat and Blood Forbidden</h5>
<p>22 The LORD said to Moses, 23 “Say to the Israelites: ‘Do not eat any of the fat of cattle, sheep or goats. 24 The fat of an animal found dead or torn by wild animals may be used for any other purpose, but you must not eat it. 25 Anyone who eats the fat of an animal from which a food offering may be[<a title="See footnote j" href="#fen-NIV-2905j">j</a>] presented to the LORD must be cut off from their people. 26 And wherever you live, you must not eat the blood of any bird or animal. 27 Anyone who eats blood must be cut off from their people.’”</p>

<p>New International Version (NIV)</p>
</div>
<div>
<h5>Crowds Follow Jesus</h5>
<p>7 Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed. 8 When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon. 9 Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him. 10 For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him. 11 Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” 12But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him.</p>
<h5>Jesus Appoints the Twelve</h5>
<p>13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 He appointed twelve[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-24303a">a</a>] that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to drive out demons. 16 These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), 17 James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”), 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot 19and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.</p>
<h5>Jesus Accused by His Family and by Teachers of the Law</h5>
<p>20 Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. 21 When his family[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-24310b">b</a>]heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”22And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.”</p>
<p>23 So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: <span>“How can Satan drive out Satan?</span> <span>24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.</span> <span>25 If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.</span> <span>26 And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come.</span> <span>27 In fact, no one can enter a strong man’s house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man’s house.</span> <span>28 Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter,</span> <span>29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.”</span></p>
<p>30 He said this because they were saying, “He has an impure spirit.”</p>

<p>3 Trust in the LORD and do good;    dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. 4Take delight in the LORD,    and he will give you the desires of your heart.</p>
<p>5 Commit your way to the LORD;    trust in him and he will do this: 6He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,    your vindication like the noonday sun.</p>

<h4>Leviticus 4</h4>
<h5>The Sin Offering</h5>
<p>1 The LORD said to Moses, 2“Say to the Israelites: ‘When anyone sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the LORD’s commands—3 “‘If the anointed priest sins, bringing guilt on the people, he must bring to the LORD a young bull without defect as a sin offering[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-2799a">a</a>] for the sin he has committed. 4 He is to present the bull at the entrance to the tent of meeting before the LORD. He is to lay his hand on its head and slaughter it there before the LORD. 5 Then the anointed priest shall take some of the bull’s blood and carry it into the tent of meeting. 6 He is to dip his finger into the blood and sprinkle some of it seven times before the LORD, in front of the curtain of the sanctuary. 7 The priest shall then put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of fragrant incense that is before the LORD in the tent of meeting. The rest of the bull’s blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 8 He shall remove all the fat from the bull of the sin offering—all the fat that is connected to the internal organs, 9 both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which he will remove with the kidneys— 10 just as the fat is removed from the ox[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-2806b">b</a>] sacrificed as a fellowship offering. Then the priest shall burn them on the altar of burnt offering. 11 But the hide of the bull and all its flesh, as well as the head and legs, the internal organs and the intestines— 12that is, all the rest of the bull—he must take outside the camp to a place ceremonially clean, where the ashes are thrown, and burn it there in a wood fire on the ash heap.</p>
<p>13 “‘If the whole Israelite community sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the LORD’s commands, even though the community is unaware of the matter, when they realize their guilt 14 and the sin they committed becomes known, the assembly must bring a young bull as a sin offering and present it before the tent of meeting. 15 The elders of the community are to lay their hands on the bull’s head before the LORD, and the bull shall be slaughtered before the LORD. 16 Then the anointed priest is to take some of the bull’s blood into the tent of meeting. 17 He shall dip his finger into the blood and sprinkle it before the LORD seven times in front of the curtain. 18 He is to put some of the blood on the horns of the altar that is before the LORD in the tent of meeting. The rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 19 He shall remove all the fat from it and burn it on the altar, 20 and do with this bull just as he did with the bull for the sin offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for the community, and they will be forgiven. 21Then he shall take the bull outside the camp and burn it as he burned the first bull. This is the sin offering for the community.</p>
<p>22 “‘When a leader sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the commands of the LORD his God, when he realizes his guilt 23 and the sin he has committed becomes known, he must bring as his offering a male goat without defect. 24 He is to lay his hand on the goat’s head and slaughter it at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered before the LORD. It is a sin offering. 25 Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 26He shall burn all the fat on the altar as he burned the fat of the fellowship offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for the leader’s sin, and he will be forgiven.</p>
<p>27 “‘If any member of the community sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the LORD’s commands, when they realize their guilt 28 and the sin they have committed becomes known, they must bring as their offering for the sin they committed a female goat without defect. 29 They are to lay their hand on the head of the sin offering and slaughter it at the place of the burnt offering. 30 Then the priest is to take some of the blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 31They shall remove all the fat, just as the fat is removed from the fellowship offering, and the priest shall burn it on the altar as an aroma pleasing to the LORD. In this way the priest will make atonement for them, and they will be forgiven.</p>
<p>32 “‘If someone brings a lamb as their sin offering, they are to bring a female without defect. 33 They are to lay their hand on its head and slaughter it for a sin offering at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered. 34 Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 35They shall remove all the fat, just as the fat is removed from the lamb of the fellowship offering, and the priest shall burn it on the altar on top of the food offerings presented to the LORD. In this way the priest will make atonement for them for the sin they have committed, and they will be forgiven.</p>
<h4>Leviticus 5</h4>
<p>1“‘If anyone sins because they do not speak up when they hear a public charge to testify regarding something they have seen or learned about, they will be held responsible.</p>
<p>2 “‘If anyone becomes aware that they are guilty—if they unwittingly touch anything ceremonially unclean (whether the carcass of an unclean animal, wild or domestic, or of any unclean creature that moves along the ground) and they are unaware that they have become unclean, but then they come to realize their guilt; 3 or if they touch human uncleanness (anything that would make them unclean) even though they are unaware of it, but then they learn of it and realize their guilt; 4 or if anyone thoughtlessly takes an oath to do anything, whether good or evil (in any matter one might carelessly swear about) even though they are unaware of it, but then they learn of it and realize their guilt— 5 when anyone becomes aware that they are guilty in any of these matters, they must confess in what way they have sinned. 6 As a penalty for the sin they have committed, they must bring to the LORD a female lamb or goat from the flock as a sin offering[<a title="See footnote c" href="#fen-NIV-2837c">c</a>]; and the priest shall make atonement for them for their sin.</p>
<p>7 “‘Anyone who cannot afford a lamb is to bring two doves or two young pigeons to the LORD as a penalty for their sin—one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. 8 They are to bring them to the priest, who shall first offer the one for the sin offering. He is to wring its head from its neck, not dividing it completely, 9 and is to splash some of the blood of the sin offering against the side of the altar; the rest of the blood must be drained out at the base of the altar. It is a sin offering. 10The priest shall then offer the other as a burnt offering in the prescribed way and make atonement for them for the sin they have committed, and they will be forgiven.</p>
<p>11 “‘If, however, they cannot afford two doves or two young pigeons, they are to bring as an offering for their sin a tenth of an ephah[<a title="See footnote d" href="#fen-NIV-2842d">d</a>] of the finest flour for a sin offering. They must not put olive oil or incense on it, because it is a sin offering. 12 They are to bring it to the priest, who shall take a handful of it as a memorial[<a title="See footnote e" href="#fen-NIV-2843e">e</a>] portion and burn it on the altar on top of the food offerings presented to the LORD. It is a sin offering. 13In this way the priest will make atonement for them for any of these sins they have committed, and they will be forgiven. The rest of the offering will belong to the priest, as in the case of the grain offering.’”</p>
<h5>The Guilt Offering</h5>
<p>14 The LORD said to Moses: 15 “When anyone is unfaithful to the LORD by sinning unintentionally in regard to any of the LORD’s holy things, they are to bring to the LORD as a penalty a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value in silver, according to the sanctuary shekel.[<a title="See footnote f" href="#fen-NIV-2846f">f</a>] It is a guilt offering. 16They must make restitution for what they have failed to do in regard to the holy things, pay an additional penalty of a fifth of its value and give it all to the priest. The priest will make atonement for them with the ram as a guilt offering, and they will be forgiven.</p>
<p>17 “If anyone sins and does what is forbidden in any of the LORD’s commands, even though they do not know it, they are guilty and will be held responsible. 18 They are to bring to the priest as a guilt offering a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value. In this way the priest will make atonement for them for the wrong they have committed unintentionally, and they will be forgiven. 19 It is a guilt offering; they have been guilty of[<a title="See footnote g" href="#fen-NIV-2850g">g</a>] wrongdoing against the LORD.”</p>

<h3>Mark 2:13-3:6</h3>

<h5>Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners</h5>
<p>13 Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. <span>“Follow me,”</span>Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”</p>
<p>17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, <span>“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”</span></p>
<h5>Jesus Questioned About Fasting</h5>
<p>18Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”</p>
<p>19 Jesus answered, <span>“How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them.</span> <span>20 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast.</span></p>
<p><span>21 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse.</span> <span>22 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”</span></p>
<h5>Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath</h5>
<p>23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. 24The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”</p>
<p>25 He answered, <span>“Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?</span> <span>26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”</span></p>
<p>27 Then he said to them, <span>“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.</span> <span>28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”</span></p>
<h4>Mark 3</h4>
<h5>Jesus Heals on the Sabbath</h5>
<p>1 Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. 2 Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. 3 Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, <span>“Stand up in front of everyone.”</span></p>
<p>4 Then Jesus asked them, <span>“Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?”</span>But they remained silent.</p>
<p>5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, <span>“Stretch out your hand.”</span> He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. 6 Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.</p>

<h4>Psalm 36</h4>
<h5>Psalm 36[<a title="See footnote a" href="#fen-NIV-14440a">a</a>]</h5>
<p><strong>For the director of music. Of David the servant of the LORD.</strong>1 I have a message from God in my heart    concerning the sinfulness of the wicked:[<a title="See footnote b" href="#fen-NIV-14440b">b</a>]There is no fear of God    before their eyes.</p>
<p>2 In their own eyes they flatter themselves    too much to detect or hate their sin. 3 The words of their mouths are wicked and deceitful;    they fail to act wisely or do good. 4Even on their beds they plot evil;    they commit themselves to a sinful course    and do not reject what is wrong.</p>
<p>5 Your love, LORD, reaches to the heavens,    your faithfulness to the skies. 6 Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,    your justice like the great deep.    You, LORD, preserve both people and animals. 7 How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!    People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. 8 They feast on the abundance of your house;    you give them drink from your river of delights. 9For with you is the fountain of life;    in your light we see light.</p>
<p>10 Continue your love to those who know you,    your righteousness to the upright in heart. 11 May the foot of the proud not come against me,    nor the hand of the wicked drive me away. 12 See how the evildoers lie fallen—    thrown down, not able to rise!</p>

<p>1The proverbs of Solomon:   A wise son brings joy to his father,    but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.</p>
