- the back-story of Joseph's experience
- there's a huge difference between trying to be a believer and just being a believer
- beyond: the past, the offense, the pain, the judgement or justification of revenge or defense, the emotions. As a family, they had to make the decision that things would be different. That they would move beyond.
- we live in a world of whiners - Get Over It
Tools For Getting "Beyond"
1. Forgive - it's not optiona, it's a command (Matt. 6:16, John 20:23)
  - unforgiveness causes us to retain the pain of the past
  - it accomplishes nothing
  - forgiveness is to cut loose the pain of the past and give your whole life to the love of Jesus
2. Forget (Phil. 3:13) - there are things ahead of us, that if we don't forget the past, we'll never be able to enjoy the life or the family God has planned for us.
3. Press On (Phil. 3:13-14, John 20:23, Ps. 45:1)
  - it's possible for your life to be so full of regret, guilt, unforgiveness, and shame, that there's no capacity for us to really grab a hold of and experience not only the present but have vision for the future. We've got to get beyond those hurts because there's something greater at stake.
  - I refuse to let my failures of my past control my future.
4. Looking Back (Gen. 50:20)
  - because the past is real, then how do we view it? The same way Joseph did. We see the good and not the bad. We see the promise and not the pain, we see the family together, whole and enjoying life.
  - Joseph and his brothers, and their families, got beyond their past.
  - discontentment gets us stuck being held back. Godliness with contentment is great gain (1 Tim. 6:6)
  - our families and home is a big deal. Don't take it for granted.
  - learn how to release things like God forgives and forgets our sins</itunes:summary><itunes:subtitle>There are things ahead of us, that if we don't forget the past, we'll never be able to enjoy the life or the family God has planned for us.</itunes:subtitle><itunes:author>Rev. Matt. 12:22-37, 7:12 - golden rule
- every person will give an account of their words to God, whether they want to or not.
- Lev. 19:16-18 - God wants us to live out this life as Jesus did
- Rom. 14:11-12
- your words reveal your heart, God is God of the heart
- Rom. 7:12 - God is a God of action "Do to others..."
- Jesus requires that you show kindness to others
- speak evil of no man
10 principles to help us live out the golden rule:
1. If I have a problem with another person, I will go to him/her privately.
2. If someone has a problem with me, I want him/her to come to me privately, and I will be open to hear what he/she has to say.
3. If someone has a problem with me and they come to you, send them to me and I’ll do the same for you.
4. If someone hesitates to come to me, say, “I’ll go with you. I’m sure they’ll discuss this situation with you.” I’ll do the same for you.
5. Be careful how you interpret me. I’d rather do that. (instead of jumpint to conclusions, ask what they meant)
6. I will be careful how I interpret you.
7. If it’s confidential, I won’t tell, unless someone is harming himself/herself or someone else.
8. I won’t send or pay attention to unsigned letters or notes. Information should always travel with a person’s name so it can be cleared up, if necessary.
9. I will not manipulate; I will not be manipulated.
10. When in doubt, I will bring up my concern or question.

- everything I have is on load from God and I will give an account of how I've managed it.
- secret of contentment - Eccl. 6:9, Phil.4:12 - by nature, we tend to be discontent
4 Steps to Contentment:
1. Stop comparing yourself to others (2 Cor. 10:12) - we all have designer genes and we're all unique
- America's favorite sport is comparison
- Principles of contentment: I must learn to admire without having to acquire. I don't have to own it in order to enjoy it (Ex. 20:17)
- coveting is the uncontrolled desire to acquire
- if you own something you can't let go of, it actually owns you
- bring our desires under control of the Holy Spirit
2. Enjoy what you have (Eccl. 5:19) - God enjoys watching us enjoy what He's given us
- what do I have now that I'm not enjoying?
- get rid of "when and then" thinking (when this happens, then I'll be happy)
- it doesn't cost anything to be happy
- two ways to have enough: work more and want less (1 Tim. 6:17-19)
- ways to be wealthy and not materialistic:
- don't become proud of your wealth
- don't put your hope in money
- use it to do good
- share it with others - giving is an antidote to materialism
- tithing is the starting point of honoring God in our giving and begins to break the grip of materialism on my life
3. Remember life is not about things - the greatest things in life are not things
4. Focus on what whill last forever - (2 Cor. 4:18)
- truth: I can't have it all and I don't need it all to be happy
- my satisfaction is not in what I have, but Whose I am and Who I belong to (Ps. 17:15)</itunes:summary><itunes:subtitle>If you own something you can't let go of, it's actually owning you. - Luke 16:1-14 - leverage your stuff for eternal purposes
- Luke 12:13-34 - where you treasure is, there your heart is also. Where ever you want your heart to be, start putting your treasure there.
- Law of Contentment - Prov. 14:30 - when it comes to health, it's not what you eat, but what eats you, Eccl. 6:9 - better to be satisfied with what you have

5 Damaging Effects of Wanting More:
1. More fatigue (Prov. 23:4) - the drive to get more, leaves us tired - even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat.
2. More expenses (Eccl. 5:11) it always costs more to have more - my greeds are now my needs
3. More anxiety (Eccl. 5:12) - the more you have, the more you have to worry about - insomnia increases with income
4. More conflict (Prov. 15:27, 1 Tim. 6:9) - fatigue to expenses to anxiety = more conflict
5. More dissatisfaction (Eccl. 5:10) - we tend to think having more = more satisfaction, more love, more importance - why were we once thrilled with what we are now dissatisfied with?

What woud your life be like without Christmas?
  - no family gatherings
  - no Christmas gifts
  - no Christmas traditions
  - no decorations
  - no Christmas trees
  - No Jimmy Stewart’s “It’s a Wonderful Life”
Jesus' coming, changed history:
  - we number our calendars by it
  - largest religious celebration of the year
Luke 10:27
Johann Sebastian Bach wrote on all his songs "Soli Deo Gloria" (Soley to the glory of God).
Without Jesus coming, there would be:
  - no God with us
  - no victory
  - no salvation from our sin (Isa. 53:1-12)
  - no victory over satan (1 John 3:8)
  - evil would win instead of Jesus (Isa. 9:6)
  - no fulfilled prophecies
  - no resurrection from the dead
  - no hope for today or tomorrow (Luke 2:10-11, John 1:1-14, 2 Cor. 5:17)
  - no new life - no starting over (John 1:10, 12, 3:16-17, 1 Peter 3:18, John 1:12)

7 things about the blood of Jesus:
1. It's royal blood - not the blood of just any ordinary man
2. It's precious blood - Jesus is God's only Son (John 3:16)
3. It's holy blood - it was innocent (2 Cor. 5:21, Heb. 4:15)

5. It's cleansing blood (1 John 1:9, Ps. 51:10) - we need to walk in the cleansing foundain of Jesus' blood.
6. It's willing blood - not forced blood (Phil.2:8) - Jesus was willing to complete the mission.

- ingratitude can be the source of many of our problems today
- lepers were an outcast of society
- Charles Brown gave some possible reasons why the nine did not give thanks:
*One waited to see if the cure was real
*One waited to see if it would last
*One said he would see Jesus later
*One decided that he had never had leprosy
*One said that he would have gotten well anyway
*One gave the glory to the priests
*One said, “Any rabbi could have done it”
*One said, I was already much improved

- things that will help us not slip into ingratitude:
1. notice the leper's condition
2. notice the leper's cry
  - Rom. 5:6 - like lepers, we are helpless to stop our destruction in sin and cry out to Jesus for mercy
  - grace is getting what you don't deserve...mercy is not getting what you deserve
  - the leper's only hope was Jesus - the same is for us as sinners
3. notice one leper's celebration
  a. note the perception of gratitude - note how blessed we already are. The leper noticed that he was cleansed
    - do we really percieve what God has blessed us with?
    - an ungrateful Christians is a defeated CHristian because they 've lost their joy
  b. note the priority of gratitude - the leper immediately turned around and ran back to give thanks
  c. note the perfection of gratitude - v.15, in a loud voice
    - wholeness comes when gratitude is made to perfection and maturity and made a priority
    - he glorified God above all else</itunes:summary><itunes:author>Pastor Phillip O'Reilly</itunes:author>

Were There Not Ten? - if I want peace in my life, I need to be a branch and daily abide in Jesus
- Jesus is saying, "I want you to know, if you want to be in Me, and you want this peace in the midst of this trouble, then you have to become a branch in the vine. You have to let your life become entwined with My life. You can't just add Me as an attachment."

At the cross we see...
- that God loves us
- God allows freedom but He maintains control (God is in control yet He gives us freedom)
- God can use the worst for eternal good (the cross anchors us to this hope!)
- it is the bright shining piece that is part of the greater canvas that God is painting

Jesus on the cross is saying...
- I love you
- there is freedom but I have never lost control
- I will take the worst and use it for eternal good
- there is a canvas bigger than you understand

The cross reminds us...
- Jesus suffered loss
- Jesus suffered rejection
- Jesus went through pain
- Jesus suffered death

- the change in our character and way of life produces the fruit of the Holy Sprit
- abundant spiritual fruit also breeds hope and is well worth celebrating
- everyone wins with good fruit (Matt 7:17-20)

Saul - 1st king of Israel
- insecure - he was hiding out when Samuel announced that he was being anointed king (1 Sam 10:22)
  - insecurity makes everything small
  - insecure people are threatened by secure people
  - insecurity also breeds immaturity
  - insecurity brings control, security brings freedom
- disobedient (1 Sam. 13:8-13)
  - disobedience will keep us from our destiny
- offended (1 Sam. 19:9-10)
  - when we walk in offense agains someone, it's as if we put on glasses and can only see them through our offense

David - 2nd king of Israel
- secure - his security was not in what he had or what he could do
  - David's security is identified in the Psalms. The Lord is my rock, my refuge, my deliverer, my fortress. He talks about exalting the Lord continually.
  - fighting Goliath - he knew the battle belonged to the Lord (1 Sam. 17:17, 33-34)
  - security is confident, it brings freedom and maturity
- obedient - David acknowledges Saul as king and he will not touch him (1 Sam. 24:1-11)
- forgiveness - David walks in mercy toward Saul (Ps. 86:5)

Deut. 1:38,3:28, Isa. 35:3-4, Acts 11:20-24
- You know you're in the Spirit when you are an encourager. That's a sign that you're walking with the Spirit.
- God has something for you to receive and somehting for you to give (Col. 4:5-8)
- sins purpose is to harden your heart (Heb. 3:12-13)
- discouragement is a thief, it steals vitality and contentment and brings self pity. It's a result of blindness.

Exhortations:
1. Get encouragement from God and His Word (Rom. 15:1-6)
  - don't neglect the Scriptures which gives you encouragement
  - God needs you encouraged so you can encourage others
  - don't stop getting in the Word, and don't stop getting before God

2. Be confident in whom you have believed (2 Tim. 1:6-12)
  - I'm not trying to get victory, I'm following the One that's already victorious

3. Stand (Eph. 6:10-18)
  - "be strong in the Lord" - not myself
  - stand in faith believing in the strength and armor of the Lord and pray

4. Keep on keeping on (Gal. 6:9, 2 Thess. 3:10-15)
  - it doesn't matter the response of the world, my obedience to God remains the same - results are in the hands of God

5. Wait on the Lord and be patient (Isa. 40:25-31)
  - something supernatural happens when you wait on the Lord
  - "to wait" means to inter-twine - like a vine
  - Heb. 6:10-12

- do you want to live a more blessed life? Be generous with more than just your money, but with your love, kindness, patience, and everything God's given you.

Truths about New Testament giving - 2 Cor. 8:1-14
- it's a grace (v.1-6)
- it can be exercised during poverty (v.2)
- it's a form of fellowship (v.4)
- it should be proceeded by the dedication of self (v.5)

Purposes in giving
- to abound in all aspects of Christian experience (v.7)
- to prove the reality of one's love (v.8)
- to imitate Christ (v.9)
- to help meet the needs of others (v.14)

Blessed life people:
1. start with the first fruit tithe (Jesus affirmed tithe and said it should not be neglected) Matt. 23:23, 6:24 - Tithing also helps defeat the control of money over your life.
2. give generously (Prov. 11:24-25, 2 Cor. 6:6)
3. give freely (Matt. 10:8, Luke 6:38)
4. give cheerfully (2 Cor. 9:7)
5. give sacrificially (2 Sam. 24:24, 23:13-17)</itunes:summary><itunes:subtitle>The greater blessing. How do live a more blessed life? The Great Commission, Matt 28:19, Mark 16:16, Luke 24:47-48, John 20:21, Acts 1:8
10 reasons for why we go to the ends of the earth:
1. we go because Jesus is worthy (3 John 7)
2. we go because the Father is longing (2 Peter 3:9)
3. we go because the Spirit is moving (Habakkuk 1:5)
4. we go because the harvest is ripe (John 4:35) - when it's harvest time, nothing is more important than harvesting until the season ends.
5. we go because people are lost (John 3:16, 2 Thess 1:7-9)
6. we go because nations are deserving (Rev. 15:4)
7. we go because we are commissioned (Matt 28:19)
8. we go because we will give an account before Christ (2 Cor. 5:10) - what am I doing with the resources God has given me?
9. we go because of the promises of God (Numbers 14:21, Habakkuk 2:14)
10. we go because we have a destiny (1 Peter 2:9)

v. 1 - we can react as either carnal man, natural man, or spiritual man
- everything I have belongs to God, I am to present it all to Him
v. 2 - being transformed - meditating on the Word, not just reading it (Prov. 4:5-6). Don't be conformed but have discipline
v.3 - grace has been given to every person. I'm not better than anyone else. The level of faith varies, but don't pass judgement. How can I help other's faith grow?
v. 4-5 - we all have different functions in the body of Christ. We can't all think our gift is the answer to every problem.
v. 6 - don't judge others, we all have different ifts and levels according to the grace given to each of us.
v.8 - most mercy people aren't cheerful (like Mary and Martha). Work hard to have a cheerful attitude.
v.9 - be sincere in love (not hypocritical or two-faced). A renewed mind forgives.
- must hate what is evil and cling to what is good (both) at the same time
v.10 - devoted - not a casual commitment. Honoring others above myself goes against the world's values. Renew your mind by honoring others.
v.11 - keep your spiritual fervor - take responsibility for my own spiritual growth, and ask for help when I need it.

Rom. 12:1-2 - through a renewed/rewired mind we can kmnow God's will
2 Cor. 10:3-5 - take every thought captive and make it obedient to God
Isa. 30:15, Phil. 3:19 - need spiritual discernment
- a non-conformed mind - not one that's out of touch with the people that need to hear God like the Pharisees were, but we use our mind to choose who to listen to. Not obsessed with outer beauty, but God' inward beauty in me.
- world: obsessed with consumerism, God is obsessed with giving
- world: focused on success, God is looking vor servanthood
- world: focused on revenge, God is looking for forgiveness
- world: focused on self-gratification and self-exhaltation, God is looking for humility and sacrifice

God's solution: Rom. 8:5-6 - have a spiritual mind
1 Cor. 2:9-16 - we have the mind of Christ
  - Holy Spirit teaches us about God and His mind
  - natural man doesn't receive things from the Spirit of God, doesn't have the capacity to understand. God help me to reach them through something they can understand
  - spiritual man trust God - against human logic
  - 1 Cor. 3:1-3 - christians can still walk as a natural man</itunes:summary><itunes:subtitle>Part 3: A Renewed Mind</itunes:subtitle><itunes:author>Pastor Phillip O'Reilly</itunes:author>

Rewired, Part 3, Aug 7, 2011

<P>A Renewed Mind<BR><A href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Rom.%2012:1-2&amp;version=NIV">Rom. 12:1-2</A> - through a renewed/rewired mind we can kmnow God's will<BR><A href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Cor.%2010:3-5&amp;version=NIV">2 Cor. 10:3-5</A> - take every thought captive and make it obedient to God<BR><A href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Isa.%2030:15,%20Phil.%203:19&amp;version=NIV">Isa. 30:15, Phil. 3:19</A> - need spiritual discernment<BR>- a non-conformed mind - not one that's out of touch with the people that need to hear God like the Pharisees were, but we use our mind to choose who to listen to. - renewing your mind (Rom. 12:1-2, 2 Cor. 3:18-19, Eph. 4:22-23) the mind has a spirit
- setting your mindset (Rom. 8:5-6, Titus3:5) need the Holy Spirit's power
- take captive every thought
- do some soul talking (Prov.23:7)
- "What you hang in your closet is what you will clothe yourself with. Your soul talk will affect who you are" Jennifer Rothschild from her book 'Self Talk, Soul Talk'
- emotion trumps reason every time
Let's Rewire:
- run to God for your pleasure (Heb. 4:12-16, Ps. 16:11, 46:1)
