The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, known also as the C&O Canal, extends over 184 miles into Cumberland, Maryland. Historically, it was the central means of transporting goods on the Potomac River, such as grain, coal, and lumber. Farmers, merchants, and manufacturers all counted on the C&O Canal to ship their goods and it was an important part of Maryland’s economy. Today, it’s still thriving as an attraction for hikers, cyclists, conservationists, historians, and tourists. The C&O Bike Trail is a great way to experience the Canal Towpath. Cyclists will also enjoy the few campsites available to hikers and bikers. The Allegany Arts Council, based in Cumberland, Maryland, oversees arts programs for Allegany County. Its headquarters on Centre Street are also the home of the Saville Gallery, which features works from local as well as national artists. The exhibits change every four to five weeks. Those who enjoy folklore should visit the Mountain City Traditional Arts in Frostburg, MD, which was established in May 2009. There, people can learn about local arts and crafts traditions. Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI)

The Adventure Sports Center International, or ASCI, is a non-profit organization that introduced people to the excitement of white water rafting, among other activities. Based in McHenry, Maryland, the Center’s mountaintop white-water “river” is actually a man-made course with re-circulated water. This controlled environment gives people at all skill levels a chance to experience the rapids and practice the sports of kayaking, rafting, river boarding, inflatable kayaks or “duckies”, and canoeing. Instructors come from a variety of backgrounds, including Olympics competitors. Adventure Sports Center International also manages the Fork Run Recreation Area, so students can explore hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, rappelling, and geocaching. There’s also the white-knuckled “mountain coaster.” All activities are family-friendly. Over its 100-plus-years history, Frostburg State University has grown with the needs of the students it serves.
