Puerto del Carmen Carnival 2012

The poster and programme have been released by the Tourism Department for the Puerto del Carmen carnival in February 2012.

After many years at Club La Santa the Fun Sun shop at Club La Santa will sadly be closing down. However, Fun Sun in Puerto del Carmen will remain open.

Refurbishment

During 2011 and 2012 Club La Santa will be undergoing a process of refurbishment to make the World’s Number 1 Sports Resort even better!

At times there may be some improvement work in certain areas of the complex during daytime hours. It may also mean that some facilities will be unavailable or have limited availability. Club La Santa will be keeping disruption to an absolute minimum.

Due to the construction of the new hotel, the golf facilities of Club La Santa are closed until further notice. We will continue offering free golf instructions to our clients but these instructions will now take place on the golf course in Costa Teguise (day/ times please find in the weekly programme).

Further updates will soon be avaliable.

User-friendliness was a primary objective, together with making it as easy as
possible to find information or documents being looked for. We hope we have
achieved this.

As well as general information about ITSO and Club La Santa for those
considering joining our association, there is a secure members’ area, accessed
by password. Please note that existing passwords will not work and that new
passwords will now be issued annually with your Member’s Card. The 2012
password is enclosed with this newsletter together with your members card(s).

Kathryn Calderbank in the Timeshare Office in Manchester has confirmed that Sports Tours no longer book flights to CLS for TSO's, because it has become more cost effective for individuals to book via the internet.
Kathryn particularly asks that members provide her with their email address, both for inclusion in Sportstours’ mailing list, which contain details of special offers, and to facilitate the electronic despatch of accommodation and transfer vouchers. Sportstours continues to require an additional payment of £8 per week for payments made by debit or credit card, in order to recoup costs imposed by the card companies.
Kathryn also wishes to remind members of the importance of providing her with full flight details as soon as these had been arranged.

Club La Santa Personalities - Winter 2011

The Ironman is a huge, famous event in Lanzarote.The third article in this series gives the self reported experiences of several Ironman TSOs who took part this year. The TSOs who took part were: Charlie Baker, Carsten Christiansen, Chris Wild, Andy Robinson, Neill Morgan, Keir Ayling and Eamonn Noonan. Congratulations to them all.

The Bakers have been visiting CLS since 1987. Charlie is now 28,a graduate of the University of Leeds in Business and Communication. A triathlete and also a windsurfer. He is a qualified Windsurf instructor (RYA) and worked as an instructor in Greece and Turkey. Charlie has worked in the e-Advertising industry, and now runs two London pubs and a property company. He did his first mini-triathlon in Club La Santa around 7 years of age. Since then he has done them on the family annual trips to CLS.

Charlie’s buildup to the Ironman involved competing in the UK sprint summer series around London then moving up to Olympic distance. He then decided to try Ironman, competing in a few 70.3 races in the UK and Austria before his first Ironman in France 2009. Then Norway in 2010 in 10 degree fjords, force 7 winds and -2 windchill. He completed his dream Ironman in 2011 in Lanzarote surrounded by friends and family competing and supporting.

Carsten Christiansen has been a TSO at CLS since 1988 with Lena Christiansen. Originally Lena was the enthusiastic Triathlete and drew Carsten in with her enjoyment. In 1993 Carsten became “infected” by the "ironman". He has competed in 15 long distance triathlon and Ironman races, among them twice in the Ironman New Zealand (2003 & 2004). In 2003 he qualified for Ironman Hawaii; then the Ironman Florida (2005, 2007, 2009 and now 2011) He also did the Ironman Arizona 2008. He reports that after events he has said many times “never ever more”! The Christiansens have been long term friends of fellow TSOs Martin and Sally Baker, parents of Charlie. Carsten encouraged Charlie in his teenage years and this mutual interest continued with a twist in 2011. Carsten did Ironman Lanzarote 2010 and wasn’t very happy with his result, so when Charlie signed up for Ironman Lanzarote 2011, he signed up too. “Race day was a very tough day at the office(as we call it) for many of us. It was one of those days with very strong winds.” Carsten’s time of 13 hours 46 minutes was an hour slower than 2010. So he plans to come back and do Ironman Lanzarote again.

Chris Wild is not a ‘typical’ triathlete; a quick look at any race registration, and he sticks out with his long hair and heavy metal t-shirts ! His career as an archaeologist is also rarely associated with sport. He can still remember the moment in 1984 when his parents announced they'd bought a timeshare at CLS. His love of cycling developed through the 1990s, and became 'serious' at the end of 1996, when a timeshare week coincided with the 1st International Bike Week, riding with that year's tour de France winner, Bjarne Riis. Chris' introduction to triathlon was, like Charlie,the 'Mini Tri'. Despite being a bad swimmer, and hating running, he signed up to Club la Santa's first triathlon training camp in 2005, and the pipedream of 'doing an Ironman' was on the way to realisation. Despite its reputation as “ The Toughest Ironman in the World”, there was only ever going to be one place to make a debut, on his 'home' course of Lanzarote, on roads that had become very familiar. His time of 12 hours 17 minutes was massively better than the target of 'just finishing' within the 17 hour time-frame. Chris has been on the start line every year since, improving his time on each occasion, to
a new personal best of 10:39 in 2011. The entry for May 2012 is, of course already in.

Andy Robinson has been a TSO member for three years and is married to Jo who, with children Kate 21 and Michael 18 enjoy the sports at CLS and back in the UK. Andy lives near Box Hill where the Olympic cycle road race will be looping in 2012. Working as a controls analyst for multinational oil company based in London, Andy commutes 17 miles each way daily by bike. His training also includes the 33m swimming pool in the basement and running through Royal Parks at lunchtimes. Andy enters the 50-54 age group.
He is in his 4th year of triathlons which have been mainly sprint and standard distance. His first attempt at the Ironman distance was in UK in 2007 when shortly afterwards he had a heart operation. Since then he has competed for GB at European and World Championships at standard distance. Andy’s second Ironman distance in Lanzarote this year had the following aims: get round in one piece / don’t walk any of the marathon / ENJOY the experience!

Neill Morgan has been visiting Club LaSanta and Lanzarote since1998. Originally enjoying football and running he first heard of the Ironman in the Pool Bar. Initially appalled at the concept, the years rolled on and swimming and cycling were taken up and he tried the mini triathlon. ‘It was just great fun.’ Hooked ! Although not good at hill climbing on the bike he persisted with training at CLS. In 2001 and 2002, the Ironman USA was completed, it was a hilly course, but not as much as Lanzarote, and less windy. In 2004 Neill entered for Lanzarote Ironman but came down with a nasty bout of food poisoning, which affected the absorption of nutrients in the race three weeks later. This resulted in the Doctor withdrawing Neill from the race at the top of Mirador del Rio. To prove he could do an Ironman he did Austria a year later. Then in 2008, Lanzarote again, only to pick up a nasty chest infection resulting in withdrawal from the race the day before. ‘Needless to say I was gutted and beginning to think that the Lanzarote Ironman was not going to happen for me. In 2009 Neill finished Lanzarote Ironman and then redid the event in 2011.

An Ironman distance (3.8 km swim / 180 km bike / 42 km run = 2.4 miles swim / 112 miles bike / 26.2 miles run) may only be called an Ironman when the event is part the Ironman organization www.ironman.com. There are also a wide range of events at Ironman distance that have other names.

Pedestrianisation of Supermarket Service Road!

Vehicles will no longer be able to use the service road running past the supermarket as it will soon have a barrier installed, preventing all vehicles from entering. The pedestrian-only road will improve safety for guests. Deliveries to the supermarket will be on trollies, sack trucks etc.

New Development - Winter 2011

New Development Takes Shape!

At the AGM Colin Cookman gave more details of the new development at Club La Santa, which has at last begun, after over seven years of planning. Already large diggers are at work at the far end of the complex, with much surface material being removed.Ninety-six 4-Key grade apartments are to be constructed, together with two Olympic size swimming pools, a badminton hall, four squash courts, a leisure pool, and a 300-seat restaurant.
Construction was planned to take 20 months, with completion towards the end of 2013.
A condition of the grant of planning approval had been the renovation of the whole of the existing complex. This too has started, with Towers 1, 50 and 51 completed, and 3 and 52 scheduled to be finished by end November. Surrounding towers would be closed as work progressed on each tower. Four one-bed apartments have been converted into two-bed apartments, by building over the terrace, and a small number of further conversions is anticipated.
Timeshare owners affected will continue to pay the one-bedroom service fee.A great deal of attention was being paid, Colin said, to the new design of the apartments, which were to be stripped out and rebuilt with a special floor covering to improve soundproofing and easeof cleaning. There would be better lighting, more shelf and storage space, excellent quality kitchen fitments, WiFi access and TV connections in Red apartments. Following input from architects and designers, the final specifications were due to be approved by the owners before the ned of the year.

These would clearly be a major improvement over the existing apartments.
It was also a condition of the planning permissions that the renovation work must be completed within 18 months of the completion of the new development, otherwise financial penalties would be imposed. Already Playtime has been totally renovated,as had La Bodega, which has now reopened as a Steak and Sushi restaurant. Broadband speeds on the complex have improved to 20 Mbps, with more improvement anticipated.Colin emphasised that the development plans were focused on creating a single resort, and to avoid any impressions of “new” and “old” sections. Reception and the administration offices were to move to the old pizzeria area with the supermarket relocated to the present Reception area. Sportsbooking would move to the current bikeshed area. A new‘fine cuisine’ restaurant was to be built on the old sewerage plant area, overlooking the lagoon; the whole square would be rebuilt,necessitating the closure of the entire area at some stage. The present Olympic pool would be converted into a 25 metre pool,and a 20 metre pool with flexible floor,facilitating a 5 metre depth for diving, and shallow access for children and disabled people.Club La Santa are planning the work to cause as little disruption as possible. Additional Green Team members have been taken on
in order to maintain the level of service, and we have been promised sight of the Renovation Timetable, although this is not yet to hand.

In accordance with ITSOs constitution, one-third of the committee retires by
rotation each year.
At the 2011 AGM Rod Duke, Alison Howat and Bon Moore accordingly retired, and offered themselves for re-election. There were no other nominations, and all three were unanimously re-elected. A call was made by the chair at the AGM for any member interested in joining the committee to please approach her. In consequence two new members have been co-opted.
Our long standing excellent Chair, Veronica Carter, and Secretary, Colin
Cookman, plan to stand down from the committee once STRAP2 is completed.
Members will be pleased to learn that a succession plan has been drawn up,
details of which will be published in due course.

A New Agreement In Prospect

From UK AGM - Colin Cookman's speech:-

"A key feature of this year’s meeting between the International TimeShare Owners Board and the Management of CLS was the negotiation of a new 10-year agreement to replace the current ‘Statement of Timeshare Owners’ Rights and Privileges’ (STRAP) which expires at the end of December.
In the course of negotiations, the ITSO board had met with Jan Laursen, the new chairman of the board of owners. He had recognised Timeshare owners as “extremely welcome and appreciated guests at Club La Santa and the most obvious ambassadors of the resort." However, many changes have taken place over the past 11 years and the owners are currently embarking on a very major renovation and expansion of the complete resort which will significantly improve the facilities currently enjoyed by TSO's. To achieve these improvements however means that there will have to be some "give and take" between Club La Santa and the arrangement it has with its Timeshare Owners over the next ten years and beyond. This is the subject of the current negotiations for a new STRAP2 Agreement. Whilst we cannot comment on the details at this time,we can reveal that the most important issue - the pegging of any changes in the Service Fee to the Spanish Retail Price Index - has already been agreed.
Rest assured that in these negotiations your ITSO representatives will be doing all they can both to protect and promote the interests of all TSO's at CLS, and particularly the interests of ITSO members."

Dear all,

It is a pleasure to announce that we have decided to reinforce the organization at Club la Santa in Lanzarote. The 1st of January 2012 Danish marketing specialist Christian Mücke Laursen will join the Lanzarote marketing team heading the department with the title of Development and Marketing Manager.

Christian is an experienced marketer with special knowledge within communication and customer relation management (CRM). The main focus for Christian will be scoping and implementation of the new Club La Santa website in corporation with the sales offices in the UK, Denmark and Germany, to improve our ability to deliver communication that is customized to our clients interests and demands.

Along with the new websites comes integration of hotel reservation system and a new CRM system enabling Club La Santa to build client relations to a higher level. A part of this development is also the onsite relations to Club La Santa activities and commercial units.

Christian will spend January at the sales office in Denmark and move to Club La Santa in the beginning of February together with his wife Charlotte and their two children.

Our new Steak and Sushi restaurant offers a full à la carte menu and is the perfect place to enjoy your evening meal while taking in the live entertainment in the square.

Open 7 nights a week from 17.00 to 22.30 hours.

The new minimalist design of the serving area gives a bright and clear look of the fully renovated square. The eating area is modern and very inviting. The new concept of combining Steak and Sushi in the same place is highly successful.

It is therefore recommended to book tables in advance, especially for larger groups.

On the menu card, you will find a choice of starters, with some more classic dishes such as the “Tinajo Melon with Iberian Ham”, also vegetarian plates as the “Grilled selection of fresh vegetables” - Served with a touch of pure palm honey from the island of La Gomera along with an optional exquisite sauce of avocado and natural yogurt.
