Are you ready to turn in your old roller skates for something smoother and more versatile? Are you ready to try inline skating? If you are new to the sport of inline skating you have probably asked yourself “what are the best inline skates for me?” As with many sports this is an important question. If a person does not make a little time to do some research to answer this question then they usually suffer some problems and often some discomforts. Answering this question is somewhat subjective.

It really depends on two factors: what is your level of skating and what kind of skating do you want to do. Therefore, let us focus on two common situations: skates for beginners and skates for speed. Even if you are interested in inline hockey skates or inline figure skates some of the following information may prove helpful to you.

Of course when choosing any kind of athletic footwear comfort is a prerequisite. Additionally, as a beginner one the first things you want to look for with inline skates, or rollerblades, is good ankle support. Usually the higher the boot the more ankle support it has. Look for skates that have a molded plastic cuff, and be sure that it has one or more buckles at the top. As a novice, it is usually a good idea not to use skate with laces as they tend to loosen up much easier than buckles.

For beginners another very important feature is the braking mechanism. How you stop. A highly recommended style of brake is the cuff-activated brake. This brake is mounted on one of the boots, usually the right boot, and is much easier to user than a heel brake or toe brake. As a principle for all inline skaters don’t buy skates from a toy store. You get what you pay for. You need to be shopping at a reputable sporting goods store where the staff truly knows something about inline skates.

What if you are a more advanced skater and you are looking to go a little faster? For many inline skaters speed is the part of the sport that they live for. Accordingly, speed skates are specifically designed for this purpose. Usually speed skates incorporate four wheels instead of three. Some speed skates even use five wheels for additional speed. The roller blade wheel shape and height are important considerations. Typically the taller the wheels are the faster they go.

In order for this to be true the wheel also needs to be of good quality and have good bearings. (Be sure to read a guide or two about skate bearings and wheels.) One draw back of a taller wheel is it is harder to accelerate. It takes more effort to get them up to speed. Often on speed skates you will see the wheel sizes range between 90mm and 110mm. Another factor that affects wheel speed is the wheel’s shape. The more elliptical a wheel is the faster it is. An elliptical wheel has less surface area that is touching the ground and therefore creates less friction. Wheels that are more rounded or square give better stability but are slower.

Roller skates, inline skates, and skateboard wheels all will not roll very far or fast if they do not have good quality skate bearings. There are quite a few styles, sizes, and quality levels that bearing makers manufacture. Knowing which are the right ones for your skates or skate board can be a challenge. With this in mind how about a few key points to help you understand how to change and chose your bearings.

Bearings used in sports like roller skating and inline skating are called miniature deep groove ball bearings. The bearings often used in inline skates are a variation of this same type of bearing. Because they are very small they are also called micro bearings. Whether it is a skate board wheel or an inline skate wheel you always need two bearings per wheel. The wheel has a hole in it with a flange in the very center. One bearing fits in on either side of this flange.

With inline skates there is usually some kind of sleeve or adapter that helps the bearing to fit snug in place. There are some special tools made to remove and install bearings but these are not always necessary. Often a dowel or stick of the proper size can be used to push the bearings out and you can be inventive with “C” clamps or a table vice and some small wood blocks for pressing bearings into a wheel.

Many bearings are made in China, however bearings of higher quality usually come from Germany, Japan, Canada, Switzerland, or the United States. Swiss bearings have one of the best reputations. You have to be careful though some bearings will have a description on them saying “Swiss bearings” but they are actually made in other places. It pays to pay attention to where the bearings that you are thinking of buying are coming from.

There are a few different rating systems to help you know what quality of bearing you are buying. One system is the ABEC rating system. This system was created by the Annular Bearing Engineering Committee. Its rating runs as follows, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9. One is the lowest quality and nine is the highest. Many other companies have created their own rating systems. In order to understand how they rate their bearings they often provide explanations on their web sites.

Many experienced bearing users warn however not to be too focused on the ABEC type of rating system. They recommend focusing your attention more on the quality of the product that a manufacture provides. Knowing the quality of the bearing parts, like the raceway (were the bearings sit), bearings, lubricants, retainer and seals (components used to protect bearings and keep lubricant in), is a more important factor in your decision.

Whether you are a professional or a beginner good skate bearings are important. As with many things you can spend a lot of money and not really get a big payback. It seems with bearings to get a good product you do not have to spend a fortune. You just need to get to know the bearing manufactures a little bit and their reputations. Take the time to look this kind of information up. Then the next time you are at the skate shop you will know what kind of quality you are getting.

Maybe some of your friends or relatives have been telling you about how much fun rollerblading is. You have seen some people rollerblading in the park and it does not look that hard. Being the wise person you are however, you decide that you should try to learn to rollerblade before you try to keep up with your neighbors in the park. Your educated approach will pay of with less pain and more confidence.

As a general rule if a person feels comfortable with what they are learning they can learn it and be successful at it faster. If however, a person is taken out of their comfort zone, or has a bad experience the first time they are trying to learn something, then learning becomes a much harder and longer process. Therefore to help you lean to roller blade without unnecessary delays lets first help you to feel comfortable.

In order to feel comfortable you first need all the appropriate safety gear: helmet, gloves, wrist guards, knee pads, elbow pads, and comfortable but snug fitting inline skates. If you have all of this equipment now you are ready to put it on and try it out. Many experience rollerbladers recommend that for the first time you should take your equipment to a carpeted room or a flat grassy area. Put your protective equipment on first, making sure that it fits securely but comfortably, then sit down on the ground or floor to put your roller blades on.

Once your blades are on get on to your knees with your hands on the ground in front of you. With your hands still on the ground pull your right knee up under your arm pit. Now your right skate is under your body. OK, now pull your left leg into the same position while your hands are still touching the ground. Take a moment to balance your self on both skates.

From this position gradually lift your hands up in front of you and start to stand up. Keep your knees slightly bent and your hands out in front of you. This will help you keep your balance. Once you feel pretty good about yourself for being able to stay balance on two shoes with eight wheels between them, you are ready for the next step. Literally it is to step. Lift up one foot and take a step. Try slowly walking around on the rug or grass. These surface should keep your rolling to a minimum and allow you to get a good feel of how to stay balanced. After you fell that you have mastered this find some smooth flat pavement to practice rolling and stopping on.

Control, or the ability to stop, is certainly an important key to feeling comfortable. Most inline skates have some form of brake: heal brake, toe brake, or a cuff-activated brake. Usually you will be starting with a heal break or a cuff activated brake. Both involve bending your knees keeping your weight forward and slowly raising your right skate until the brake makes contact with ground. The harder you apply pressure to your brake the quicker you stop. Again, take time to practice this until you are completely confident in you ability to stop yourself.

Additional aids to help you learn to rollerblade or learn to inline skate can be found in the form of videos, lessons from a local instructor, or possibly free community lessons. Hopefully these few simple techniques can get you started with a form of recreation that can give you pleasure and exercise for years to come.

These skates have from two to four wheels and are specifically designed for grinds, slides, aerial tricks, and other difficult skating moves. The wheels are small for quick turning and acceleration. This style of skate is used for extreme skating.

Other things that will be important for you to know something about are the brakes, bearings, wheel materials, and wheel shape. Whether you read a sign in a store window that says “roller blades for sale” or you see and ad on-line for inline skates keeping the above mentioned facts in mind will help you. Quad roller skates are not quite as common as they were 40 or 50 years ago due to the advent of inline skating. Roller skates, however, continue to carry on a tradition of fun, enjoyable times that provided hours of both indoor and outdoor entertainment. As there are so many uses for roller skates, finding the correct quad roller skate wheels can sometimes be an arduous task. By separating the different uses for roller skates, it can easily be determined which wheels you need to shop for.

Outdoor roller skating wheels are not going to be as hard as indoor skate wheels are going to be. Some people like to use quad roller skates for leisurely riding or playing outdoor hockey. Be advised, though, that quad roller skates typically do not allow you to go as fast as inline skates do simply because there is more friction with the ground with quad skates. Skate wheels for outdoors are typically measured with the same hardness as an inline skate wheel is. Typically, you can find outdoor wheels with a size of 78 to 85 with an A rating on the durometer (hardness) scale.

Roller skate wheels for indoor surfaces are a much more involved, in-depth process when discussing what type of replacement wheels will work out best. Still, there is a small, dedicated community that still enjoys the rough and tumble action that roller derby creates for its participants. Roller derby skating wheels, therefore, need to allow the participant to get up to a high rate of speed while still handling the sharp corners and the obstructions created by other skaters. Derby wheels are normally going to be in the 92-97mm range, as these provide the speed that most skaters look for.

Roller skate wheels are vastly different than inline skate wheels. They are not as tall, they tend to be wider, and the core of the wheel is setup differently than it is on inline skates or Rollerblades.
