Rutgers University’s Lucy Stone Hall is home to many department offices and is named after Lucy Stone, founder of the New Jersey Woman’s Suffrage Association. We recently delivered one of our 20 yard containers to help with a sidewalk and step repair job. We were inspired by the work done by this building’s namesake .

Lucy Stone attended Oberlin College starting in 1843, where she graduated with honors and was selected to write a commencement speech for her classmates. The first woman to graduate college in the state of Massachusetts, Stone represented a large step in the right direction for the early women’s rights movement.

Other initiatives taken on by Stone included refusing to take her husband’s name and supporting women who wanted a divorce. Even today, Stone’s legacy lives on in buildings like the one at Rutgers and through women who choose to keep their birth names, who are called “Lucy Stoners.”

Recently, Roll Off Dumpster made a delivery to the Atlantic County Animal Shelter in Pleasantville, NJ. The mission of this shelter is “To provide love and compassion, in a healthy environment, to animals while attempting to reunite them with their owners, to educate the public on responsible ownership, and to facilitate successful pet adoptions while respecting and striving to improve the quality of life for both pets and people.”

As a result of worries that pets for adoption were not good pets, people often decide to get their pets from a pet store or breeder instead. In fact, more often than not, pets are given up for adoption for other reasons, including:

Owners are moving to housing that don’t allow pets (7% dogs, 8% cats)

Allergies (8% cats)Owner having personal problems (4% dogs and cats)

Too many or no room for litter mates (7% dogs, 17% cats)

Owner can no longer afford the pet (5% dogs, 6% cats)

Owner no longer has time for the pet (4% dogs)

ASPCA estimates that 5 to 7 million animals enter a shelter every year across the county. Approximately half of these animals are those given up for adoption by their owners, and half are those picked up by animal control. Due to the effects of the recent financial crisis, many shelters have essentially run out of capacity and funding. As a result, it is more important than ever that families and individuals who have the ability to adopt do so.

Fort Detrick was historically the center of the American biological weapons program from 1943 to 1969, but the program has since stopped. Still, the base is home to much of the development of the US biological defense program. The site hosts the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command.

Fort Detrick is also the largest employer in Frederick County, Maryland.

Did you know that Fort Detrick has been referenced in many pop culture outlets including the Outbreak, The Bourne Legacy & X-Files?

With the official start of summer less than a month away and Memorial Day weekend in full swing, it’s time to plan a family beach trip. To get ourselves ready for relaxation, we made a delivery to the Bethany Beach Shore Stop.

The gas station is getting ready for summer and restocking the shelves with all those beach must-haves. We have come up with a list of our top 5 beach items:

1. Sunscreen: Obvious, but necessary. A few hours in the sun can leave you burnt out for the rest of vacation.

2. A well-stocked cooler: Nothing is worse than having to trek back to the beach house to refill with snacks and refreshing drinks. Save money by stocking up at the beginning of the trip and filling your cooler with plenty of ice each day.

3. Trash bags: We might be biased, but trash bags are essential for cleaning up your beach spot. Beach trash cans can be difficult to find so clean up after yourself and avoid creating excessive waste and polluting the beach.

4. Ziploc bags: When you go to the beach, you often find your bag overflowing with electronics, like your cell phone and iPod. Keep these items safe from sand and water by keeping seal-able plastic bags.

5. Sunglasses: Not only will you protect your eyes, but you will look SUPER stylish if you have the best fashion sense on the shore.

What are your beach trip must-haves?

Hurricane Sandy took the East Coast over six months ago, but the recovery process is in no way over. Many coastal communities are still restoring homes and businesses, and boardwalks are beginning to reopen for the summer season.

Roll Off took a trip to Good Luck Point Marina in Bayville, NJ to help with the disposal of a boat destroyed in Hurricane Sandy. Many homes and boats in the area have not been revived, as homeowners are struggling to come back from the Super Storm.

Still, progress is being made. Part of the Seaside Heights Boardwalk recently opened and FEMA just announced that it is sending $2.1 million to the Sandy-ravaged Point Beach town in New Jersey. The entire Point Beach boardwalk is expected to open by Memorial Day weekend.

Throughout the past decade or so you have probably gone through a few cell phones. You felt pretty cool with your original Nokia, eventually upgraded to that classy Motorola Razr, and now you find yourself constantly connected to your iPhone or Android.

Americans on average replace their cellphones every 18-22 months, and a majority of phone users trash the phones or hold onto them. In fact, we recently blogged the benefits about cell phone disposal and the benefits of recycling.

But, what happens to old phones that get dumped?

In many impoverished nations, children pile up e-waste and burn the contents to extract metals, like gold, silver and copper. They then sell the parts to recycling centers for a minimal amount of money.

According to the World Health Organization, even a low level of exposure to lead, mercury and cadmium (all found in old phones), pose neurological and developmental risks. Children and pregnant women are especially prone to these dangers.

Even in the United States, many prison inmates are given jobs to process e-waste, which can create serious health problems.

Unfortunately, the United States is the only industrialized country to not ratify the Basel Convention, an international treaty that makes trafficking e-waste illegal. Additionally, a 2011 Responsible Electronics Recycling Act was introduced to Congress but never put to a vote. This would have made it illegal to export toxic waste from the US to many countries focused on economic cooperation and development.
