Did you know that Sutro Library moved several years back? The Sutro Library, the San Francisco branch of the California State Library, is located on the 5th floor of the J. Paul Leonard-Sutro Library on the San Francisco State University Campus.

Some of the genealogy holdings: California federal census population schedules for 1850-1930. --1852 state census, including indexes prepared by the Daughters of the American Revolution. -- Great registers of voters, arranged by county, for 1866-1898 and 1900-1944. -- A statewide index to the 1890 great register helps to fill the gap created by the loss of the 1890 census. --City and county directories from as early as 1850. -- Telephone directories starting in 1899. --Historical newspapers from around the state --Publications of county genealogical and historical societies. -- Compilations by California chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution. -- Specialized indexes and files created by the California State Library. --A California death index covering July 1, 1905-1995 and a California marriage index covering 1949-1986. -- The California State Library DOES NOT have birth, death, or marriage certificate

The holdings of the National Archives at San Francisco include over 70,000 cubic feet of original records dating from the 1850s to the 1980s, with a limited number of records as recent as the early 2000s. It is such a small world.... while attending SLIG in January, during the week long session "US Records", while participating in the research group for the class was Mary Kircher Roddy ... she was one of four in our project group for the class.

Her name was familiar but couldn't place it ((I am sure you have been there before yourself) ... we became friends through out the week and exchanged ideas and shared experiences and did a couple of happy dances together in the library. Oh those happy dances!! Mary live in the Seattle, Washington area so that would not be the connection.

As soon as I mentioned Root Cellar SGS, she knew the connection..........

"October 2015 Root Cellar PRESERVES Volume 37 No. 3 'Read ‘em or Weep – Finding Your Family in Historic Newspapers By Mary Kircher Roddy" and there was the connection...... a written article in our own RC Preserves..... if you as a member have not read it or don't remember it, or need to refresh, I would suggest going back and read it. Very informative about finding newspaper articles. There are lots of good resources to help... (sorry you need to be a member to see this article) Thank you so much Mary........

Since SLIG Mary created a new blog "Searching Stories" . She says it is a lot of fun to research and write the posts. AND oh boy, I can second that!!

Mary has a good background in genealogy. While in Salt Lake City I found her to be a very good researcher. I have since found her name on several other events including a Legacy Webinar. Do you remember that one? With my membership with Legacy I may go back in re-watch this one again, since I am trying to find living descendants also known as COUSINS. AGAIN, thanks Mary.

.........and she will be teaching at Jamboree in Burbank in June 2016......... topic looks very interesting to me.

So this is just a little more about an author in our PRESERVES who began as a stranger at a conference I attended.... As I said at the beginning what a small world... you never know who you will meet, who is the person sitting on your right? or on your left at the next conference you attend? Who is the person sitting next to you at the next class you attend? A very small world.......... so next time you take a class or attend a conference, take time to introduce yourself, you could be sitting next to a distant cousin.......

Tech Tuesday - Ending of RootsTech 2016

As the sun sets on RootsTech 2016, over 25,000 attendees made the whole long weekend worthwhile and wanting for more.............. many continued in the evenings to research their family lines at the Family History Library- lots of very happy dances going on from floor to floor to floor....... the best part of that was that everyone around them understood what that meant and could join in the dance.

I was not able to attend RootsTech this year but I will be there in 2017.... I did watch most of the live streaming sessions that were offered... DID YOU? ........included: Best Websites & Apps for Local History; Virtual Family Reunions; Finding Elusive Records in FamilySearch; Ancestor Searches in Britain; Photography & Photos; Master Searches in Ancestry; Google Searching.......... Got something out of each session. Glad I took the time to watch........

RootsTech held in Salt Lake City was a big success. Many more thousands attended this year than last year. 25,000 people registered from all 50 states and 39 countries........ 7,000 attendees were under the age of 18. It was estimated that 150,000 people viewed the live streaming sessions offered; over 100 bloggers from Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and all over the United States. It was hosted by FamilySearch, official sponsors included: Ancestry.com, findmypast, MyHeritage, PeopleFinders, Family Storytelling, BYUtv, Backblaze, Dell, Mocavo, Pictureline, Lexmark, RootsPoint, FGS, NGS, APG, NEHGS; over 200 exhibitors and vendors with booths and displays in the Expo Hall; over 50 competitors for the Innovator Showdown....... this is a very diversified conference with something for everyone, every age group.

Mobile Monday - PERISCOPE

NO NO not 'Up Periscope' but just 'PERISCOPE'

It is a new app (new to me) that Lisa Louise Cooke introduced me to on her blog. Lisa is the creator of Genealogy Gems. A blog worth following and a website worth visiting and joining.

Anyway in a recent post she said she was going to do some live streaming sessions from her booth on the exhibit floor at RootsTech. She would be using an app called Periscope. It could be downloaded free from the App store and/or Google Play........ so I did. I signed in and searched for Lisa and clicked on follow. When the time came I opened my app and it showed the sessions available which was, 'Google Power Strategies" I clicked on it and was able to watch the entire session on my iphone. She went through so much good new information that I needed to watch it again....... so if you are interested you can still go and download it and register and watch it now. But there may be a time limit on it, not sure of that.

..........she also told us about another web browser DOLPHIN that she really likes and also works well with Evernote. Lisa went through a lot of the great benefits. Really something I am going to try it out. I have downloaded it on my iphone. Some other apps she talked about: AppsGoneFree (shows you apps that are free for a period of time- check it each day); Retype: What's App (something to do with telephone calls); ScannerPro......... some free - some paid. (if you watch this session from RootsTech you will learn about them)

AND she is just releasing her new book: MOBILE GENEALOGY. Lisa is always very detailed & complete so I am sure this book is right up to date with a lot of great stuff..........

The Jamboree in Burbank is a long weekend of social events, classes, hands-on, demo's, lab sessions, Exhibit hall and so much more........and it is local for us. Yes local - less than a day drive or less than an hour flight.

If you are interested in attending, you need to at least make your hotel reservations. The Marriott fills up quickly. Then you need to go the website and see what is being offered and register. Then decide how you are going to get there - drive or fly. Maybe there are others that will be attending you can tag along with them, and/or room with others.

See you there............ I have registered, I have my hotel room at the Marriott's and I have my room mate. ........ we will be driving down.

FamilyTree Maker Software has been acquired by Software MacKiev. They have been the developer of the Mac version for six years and now will support both the Mac and PC versions.

"This new agreement means you will receive software updates and new versions from Software MacKiev, and have the ability to purchase new versions of Family Tree Maker from Software MacKiec as they are released. You will have continued access to Ancestry Hints, Ancestry searches, and be able to save your tree on Ancestry with Family Tree Maker moving forward"

......Ancestry has made an agreement with RootsMagic, a leading genealogy desktop software program, to connect Ancestry with the RootsMagic software by the end of 2016. They will also have access to Ancestry hints, Ancestry searches, and the ability to save your tree on Ancestry.

[Does this mean that RootsMagic will have the same benefits as FTM which will include syncing? Yes, I think so. Outstanding!!]

I was lucky enough to attend SLIG (Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy) earlier this month (January) in Salt Lake City - classes and the LIBRARY all in one place …. Wow!! Who could ask for more! ….hang on, there is more.

On Saturday I had dinner with Cyndi Ingle, Paula Stuart-Warren (I know I know name dropping again) and 40 or more other genealogists at Benihana in Salt Lake City. What a treat, it was my first time at Benihana’s and a more intimate evening with Cyndi, Paula and others. Great way of starting off a conference………….

I saw Cyndi here and there over the next few days. But one day at the library I decided to stop and talk with her and ask for a short interview. I thought that those of you attending or thinking about attending Root Cellar’s Spring Seminar April 2, 2016 which will feature Cyndi Ingle would like to hear a little bit about her. You might like to know that she is a very nice person, very approachable and has a great sense of humor. She is well liked and is well respected within the genealogical community. She lives on the west coast in Washington State.

So the interview begins……………… a big thank you to Cyndi for making time for me.

It all began for Cyndi in her senior year of high school in 1980. She got together with her Aunt and went through all types of documents and papers, and putting together family groups sheets. She was hooked (and you know what I mean - hooked line and sinker) and fast forward to today with her as an accomplished well known speaker, author, blogger, webmaster and of course a family researcher. She is also working on completion to become a certified genealogist. What a great goal!! -having the confidence, experience to help other people with their research. It is one thing to listen to someone and make a couple of suggestions and quite another to know where to look and what to look for to actually make a difference in their research. Good Luck Cyndi.

At her beginning of research, there were no genealogical libraries, societies in Washington state. She wanted to put her findings on the computer, but it was not like it is today with all kinds of resources and family history software programs to use. Cyndi is completely self taught……… with computer language/codes and family history. Her first piece of software was FamilyTreeMaker in DOS in the late 1980’s. But no sourcing yet. In the early 1990’s she was on AOL – a complete community in itself, but she thought there has got to be more to this than just this community – and of course there was, it is called the INTERNET. I think we have heard of it but it has continued to improve and grow month by month, year by year, decade by decade………… She joined the Dacoma Pierce County Genealogical Society and they were very encouraging and supportive. She wrote an article with the beginnings of her links and the Internet. Encouraged, she put up her article on the Internet and then contacted varies organizations(ie Roots Web) that she was up and running. And that we will say is history………………..

Keeping up her website is a full time job………. It has grown to be a gigantic website with hundreds of subjects and hundreds of links under each subject. GINORMOUS!! Making sure that ALL is working as it should, making sure that all the hot links are HOT. AND searching for the newest resources and getting them up online. You know as well as I do that links go up quickly and are bad the next time you go there. This is so frustrating not to have that resource available. Cyndi is constantly reviewing links and checking her email. People will send her new resources, let her know that something is not working or other information. She is always checking, checking and checking again………… (so now you can help by letting her know when a link in not working....... thank you in advance)

WHY? .....as if you need a reason to be in Salt Lake City with the Largest Library in the country maybe the world.

..... but since you asked I am attending a week long conference SLIG

SLIG?? Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy sponsored by Utah Genealogy Society

If you are not familiar, it has been around for at least 20 years. There are a couple of participants that have actually attended all of them, Amazing! Several years back I heard about it about it and for whatever reason thought it was more for want to be professionals but it is not. It doesn't hurt that the LIBRARY is right up the street.

This conference is a week long conference: Monday thru Friday. You sign up for one topic for the entire week, It is a very concentrated week, very [in depth study. I am enjoying myself........

I have been reunited with many friends and making new friends. I have chosen "US Records and Research" with Paula Stuart-Warren, Josh Taylor and Debbie Mieszala They each alternate talking about various subjects dealing with US Records - Planning, Vital Records, Church Records, US Passports, US Census, Clustering, Twentieth & Twenty-First Century Research and so much more......... it is an amazing week!!

We have been kept busy but there is still plenty of time for your own research too. It does make for long days probably 13 hours awake and going, then maybe a couple more hours on your computer in your room or getting what you did today organized and ready for the next day. It sounds overwhelming and it can be so I am just setting my own pace and trying not to get too tired and remembering to eat. (ok ok it wouldn't hurt to miss a couple of meals but WHY)

This is not my first time at the LIBRARY in SLC but it is my first SLIG conference. There are about 360 participants and over half of them are first timers. Apparently these are all records. We also have someone from Netherlands, China and India, now those are LONG trips. Oh the conference is being held in the Hilton which is two blocks (L O N G BLOCKS)south of the LIBRARY. Luckily for me (and many others) SLIG has provided a bus to take people back and forth all the week.

Last night we had a plenary session with Rev Dr David McDonald who blogs "Thinking Genealogically" ......... I have to say it was a fun night, I laughed so much my face was hurting, just what we needed. Excellent first night. If you ever get a chance to listen to him, do it, you won't regret it. He is teaching US Early Church Records. The two DNA classes are huge, it is a hot topic right now.

I am getting ready for tomorrow and I am tired but fired up about being here. Thankful that I am financially but healthy enough to attend.

Getting organized for tomorrow, and putting information and new records I've found into my Legacy program. Wifi is free and good so we are all doing a lot more from our rooms too. Y

Yes I have found 3 new marriages, a passenger list from Baltimore, and confirmed a maiden name,,,,,,,, ahhhhhhhhh, life is good!

But it is not all FUN there is playtime too................. oh my LIFE IS GOOD!!

Depending on what you would like, there could be an hour of classroom type presentation, videos, demonstrations and more.

This session is set for 3 hours to give you a chance to actually work on something, to learn something and practice, to watch Legacy videos and then practice before leaving. We will also incorporate the use of the Flip Pal for those that want to learn more about it and to use it more successfully.

Come and join us and get in at the beginning and make it what you want.

Thankful Thursday: Preserves the Pension: War of 1812

If you have not heard yet, Root Cellar SGS is creating another opportunity to help in the

'Preserve the Pension War of 1812" Digitization Project...... ...................this is an ongoing project..

The War of 1812 Pension Digitization Project is continuing as FGS ongoing mission of preserving the War of 1812 Pension records and make them available to the genealogical public. New images are posted at regular intervals of Ancestry.

Yes you are remembering right, we did run this same project in 2013. We matched contributions up to $500. We received well over $500 in donations that time. We are hoping that you will be just as generous this time. These will be a valuable records for all researchers and will be free to everyone and will be available immediately after digitization. The are just over 50% complete at this point. But of course the cost of this project is making it go so slow. BUT little by little, with every dollar received they are able to digitize these records thanks to your contributions.......... societies and organizations around the country are running the same event. You are all in good company. Give what you can. We are starting to receive some donations, so keep them coming. We thank you in advance.

We are only running this till December 31, 2015 so time is short. Write your checks now or go online and send a donation through PayPal. We will then forward donations plus matching funds to the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS). They will forward the funds to Ancestry.com who will again match the funds they receive.

ex: $500 raised donations will be matched by Root Cellar SGS = $1000. Root Cellar SGS will forward the $1000 to FGS who will forward it to Ancestry.com who will match our $1000 to make it $2000. Our $500 donation has grown to $2000. It costs about 45cents to digitize a page, each dollar will digitize two pages.... so $00 will digitize 1000 pages BUT the $2000 will digitize 4000 pages. ... what a major difference. Thanks to FGS and Ancestry.com and to YOU.

Go to Root Cellar SGS, click on the Preserve the Pension ICON at the top of the home page, fill out the form, print it out and mail it in (or bring it to the December Meeting - checks made out to Root Cellar SGS) OR use the convenient PayPal options. BUT whatever you do, please do it now........

Archives Crawl ...... this is a one day annual event to allow residence to visit the California State Archives, California State Library, Center for Sacramento History and the Sacramento Room, at the Central Library. Wordless Wednesday: Looking Back At You Through the Glass

September and October seem to be the months that we, as genealogists, perk up, take notice, and start spreading our family wings............ after all it is now going into the holiday season with a lot of family gatherings, stories and memories being made.

If you have not had a chance yet go now, do not pass go, do not collect $100 go now - down to the
Arden-Dimick Library 891 Watt Ave., Sacramento and the Family History display in their window created by Root Cellar SGS volunteers led by Diane Maltase. Another wonderful display that says here we are come join us on this journey of learning about our family.

This display will only be up during the month of September and then will be gone for another year. BUT if you miss it (and we hope that you won't) you will be able to see ANOTHER display by Root Cellar SGS at the Fair Oaks Library (11601 Fair Oaks, Blvd, Fair Oaks) and the North Highlands-Antelope Library (4235 Antelope Drive, Antelope) during the month of October.

It is harder to find a living relative than you might think....... and takes time too. DESCENDANTS OF JACOB SMITH PHILIPPI

FIRST GENERATION
Jacob Smith PHILIPPI was born in 1848 in Pennsylvania. He lived in Center Twp., Sacramento, California in 1875. He lived in Azusa, Los Angeles, California on 10 Aug 1888. Jacob died on 11 Nov 1937 at the age of 89 in Los Angles, California. He did marry.

The couple had the following children:
* Blanche PHILIPPI, born Dec 1873, Pennsylvania
* Louis A PHILIPPI was born in 1877 in Pennsylvania

SECOND GENERATION
Blanche PHILIPPI- born December 1873 in Pennsylvania. She married George Avery EDGAR 14 Jul 1897, Sacramento, Sacramento California. She died 29 Jun 1908 at the age of 34 in San Jose, Santa Clara, California. She was buried at Irvington Memorial Cemetery Fremont, Alameda, CA.

Blanche PHILIPPI and George Avery EDGAR were married 14 Jul 1897 in Sacramento, Sacramento, California. They appeared in the census in 1900 in Washington, Alameda, CA. George Avery EDGAR was born in May 1869 in Ill.

George Avery EDGAR and Blanche PHILIPPI had the following child:
George P. EDGAR, born 1899, San Jose, Santa Clara, California; died 1972

THIRD GENERATION
George P. EDGAR was born in 1899 San Jose, Santa Clara, California. He appeared in the census in 1900 in Washington, Alameda, California.

George P EDGAR and Rachel K Meek were married in 1925 in Hawaii. They appeared in the census in 1930 in Honolulu, Honolulu, Hawaii Territory. Rachel M was born in 1903 in Hawaii; she died in 1994.

George P EDGAR and Rachel M had the following children:
Merrill EDGAR, born 10 Nov 1924, Honolulu, Honolulu, Hawaii Territory; died 20 December 2006
Blanche R. EDGAR, born 1928, Honolulu, Honolulu, Hawaii Territory

FOURTH GENERATION
*Merrill Avery EDGAR born 10 Nov 1924, Honolulu, Honolulu, Hawaii Territory; died 20 December 2006
OBIT: Merrill Avery Edgar
Dec. 20, 2006 Merrill Avery "Bud" Edgar, 82, of Kailua, a retired Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard fuel operator, died at Castle Medical Center. He was born in Honolulu. He is survived by wife Sylvia; sons Robert and Phil; daughters Merryl Arndt, Susie Kehano and Jan Harrington; sister Blanche Futrell; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services: 9 a.m. Saturday at Kailua Beach Park. Casual attire. Flowers welcome.

*Blanche R. EDGAR, born 1928, Honolulu, Honolulu, Hawaii Territory. She married Louis Willard FUTRELL, Col., 26 August 1955, Fresno, Fresno, CA; died in 2009. Louis was born in 1923 and died in 2010. (obituary discovered for FUTTRELL, Louis Willard; 87; CA; PortervilleRecorder; 2010-8-25-with the names of all his children & grandchildren plus spouses HOOOORAY!!!!)

Looks like we maybe closing in on our challenge .... this is so exciting (sure wish I could have this luck with my DIETZ family)..... messages have now been sent out and now just waiting for replies.

Society Saturday: A Walk in the Past with the Fiddyment Family

Root Cellar SGS is Back from the HOT summer months.Hopefully everyone got to do some family researching and broke down a brickwall or two.

Root Cellar SGS's September Meeting was last Thursday. It was a memorable evening with presenter Christina Richter - " A Walk with David Fiddyment".

If you are from this area, Sacramento and Placer County, you will be familiar with this name Fiddyment...... there is the Fiddyment Farms, Fiddyment fields and especially the Fiddyment Road. ALL are connected with an original family - named for or after the original Fiddyment family in Roseville.

Christina was commissioned to write a book on the Fiddyment family. She researched the Fiddyment family for several years and you can see the results below...........

Our handout was an exert from her book which was very moving. I wanted to share just a couple of paragraphs with you ...........

"The man of 20 is far different from the man of 50, and at 80 he's much different than at any other time in his life. As the pages of time turn, people change and so do communities. Time tends to erase old landmarks, neighborhoods and even entire sections of a place. Much of Roseville has changed and for some, there are only memories where once was a place of happiness.

"One day I had the privilege of taking a walk with David on his old ranch property. The stately homestead brought a smile to his face and his descriptions of the past were animated. Her recalled where the dirt roadways on the ranch used to be, and where the buildings that once housed the life-blood of the Fiddyment family used to stand. As we approached the proud old home he quickly told me everything as though he might suddenly forget."

There was a book signing after the presentation. It went so well that Christina had to go get more books from her car......... good job Christina. (...and thanks to Root Cellar members and guests who support our speakers)

I am sure the Fiddyment family really appreciates all the time, effort and gray cell time you put into this book.

NOTE: Christina has been commissioned to write a book on Placer County. So you know what she will be doing for the next year or two.......... good luck!

Another side note....... Christina told us that the Roseville Historic Society is considering purchasing the now run down Fiddyment home and renovating it - turning it into an interactive living historic building. What an ambitious project but well worth the effort. Good Luck on that project..

We are all looking forward to hearing more about both these future projects.
