2012 Oscar Predictions: Sound Mixing Contenders as the Cinema Audio Society Announces their Nominees

Two categories I have yet to predict in my Oscar predictions are Best Sound Editing and Sound Mixing, primarily because I've been waiting for the Cinema Audio Society (CAS) and Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) to weigh in with their nominees. Today, the CAS delivered and I'm expecting the results from the MPSE today or tomorrow as we are now only a few days away from the Oscar nominations.

As for the CAS noms, over the last five years there has been a pretty good track record of the nominees matching Oscar's nominees. From 2006-2009 the nominees matched four out of the five Oscar nominees. Last year, however, was a bit different as only two of the five nominees matched.

This year, I'm aiming for four of the five nominees to match once again as my only difference is I have Transformers: Dark of the Moon in my top five over Moneyball. Just on the outskirts I have War Horse, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Artist.

My pick to win at this point is Hugo, but I have Super 8 in a very close second.

You can check out all of my predictions for Best Sound Mixing right here and check out the CAS motion picture nominees directly below and if you're interested in their television and other nominees you can visit their website right here.

I didn't know where to begin this week so I went with the one movie on the board I know I love, though I have not seen this Blu-ray presentation so I can't say first hand how good it is. The folks at Blu-ray.com seem to endorse it but, in all honesty, they seem to endorse almost anything.

I should mention, however, that most of the Miramax titles Lionsgate has released so far that I have seen have been excellent presentations so I have no reason to believe this one would be any different.

You may have already read Kevin's review where he wasn't too enamored with this flick, let alone interested in recommending the Blu-ray. As for me, I didn't even want to review it and had it sent to him. That should say enough about what I think, but if you need my thoughts on the film you can read my review from Cannes right here.

I'm working on a full review for this one, but it's coming slowly. This was the first film from Kaneto Shindo that I'd seen (I've had Onibaba in my Netflix Instant queue forever) and while I enjoyed the atmospheric tension I'm having a hard time putting my complete feelings for the film into words. Until I publish the review I can say fans of the film, looking for a pristine release, look no further, Criterion has done their typical stellar job. Drenched in fog amidst the bamboo forest, this is a great looking presentation and the film benefits wholly. However, this isn't one I'd recommend on a blind buy, but more on that soon enough...

I have this Blu-ray here, but haven't found time to watch it yet. That said, I did notice it's on Netflix Instant so if you were debating whether you should buy it or not, if you're a Netflix subscriber you can try it before you buy it. Personally, I'm just waiting to be in the right mood to give it a spin.

I wrote up my thoughts on this one at the end of last month as Summit used the release of this film on DVD and Blu-ray as an opportunity to make it the first Oscar screener sent out to Academy members and critics orgs. It's a pretty good film, and as what is essentially a remake of Vittorio de Sica's 1948 Oscar-winning film Bicycle Thieves it works well, but I'm not sure it's a movie I will be rushing to return to.

I wasn't a fan of this flick. I hardly laughed and I don't find Cameron Diaz to be particularly funny.

'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' Blu-ray Review

To call Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides more of the same might be underselling it, but it would still be mostly accurate. The plot features both new and returning characters searching for the Fountain of Youth and conveniently converging on one another, but if you're a fan of the franchise you know why you're watching this film and it's damn sure not for the plot.

Pirates 4 does, however, feel like a decidedly smaller film than its predecessors. That's not entirely because it's the shortest film in the franchise either. And when I say this I mean it as a positive as I found myself overwhelmed by the sheer spectacle of the prior two films. To be honest, I don't see where the $250 million production budgets for those features was spent, unless Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush substantially upped their asking price.

Rob Marshall replaces Gore Verbinski in the director's chair for this fourth offering and gives the film more of an old-school globetrotting adventure vibe, replacing the blue Jell-O, CG tidal waves and giant squids that dominated the previous sequels with some nicely choreographed fight sequences, not entirely unlike some of his musical numbers in Chicago and/or Nine. This is one instance where a directorial change injects some life into a tired franchise.

Some of Marshall's new wrinkles include a gang of vampire mermaids who attack a raft like those pesky fish from Piranha while letting out piercing screams that conjure up memories of the Predator. Other welcome additions include Ian McShane as Blackbeard and Penelope Cruz as his daughter Angelica, whose mysterious history with Jack Sparrow throws a little romantic tension into the fire, filling that "love-story" void left open by Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom's departure.

The look of the film, on a whole, is very dark, especially for such a light-hearted adventure flick. This Blu-ray disc, however, is finally given an opportunity to show off its stuff when Jack and company leave the cellars of their ship and trudge through island greenery as they approach the Fountain.

Speaking of the Fountain, it got to the point where I didn't care who got there first. Maybe it's because Captain Jack has grown a bit stale to me over the years, or maybe it's because I enjoyed what McShane brought to the evil Blackbeard character. I did, however, like how the film works as a stand-alone feature. You know, just in case you've forgotten the trilogy's plot details over the past four years, or, as was my case, immediately after you left the theater in the summer of 2007.

When it comes to the home theater offerings, the film is available in about five different versions. I received the [amazon asin="B004A8ZWUQ" text="two-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo pack"], which has just a fraction of the extras you'd find on the [amazon asin="B0053Y7T1G" text="five-disc set"]. That said, I can't recommend any of them for purchase.

While I enjoyed On Stranger Tides more than any Pirates film since the original, it still feels rather slight and something I can't imagine returning to. Rent it, and if you ever want to see it again I'm sure it will show up on cable hundreds of times before Captain Jack's next adventure hits the big screen.

Weekend Box-Office: 'Transformers 3' Scores $97.4 Million, Setting July 4th Weekend Record

We still don't have our first $100 million opening weekend earner, something I am sure Warner Bros. is happy about as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is virtually assured to become the first once it hits theaters in a couple weeks. But let's not look too far forward. Let's break this weekend down so we can get on with our extended July 4th weekend.

Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 9 Weeks In A Row

Well, Transformers: Dark of the Moon fell short of that $100 million mark in three days, a number it would have obviously hit had it not started screening Tuesday night, but that's the route Paramount chose. One thing they have going for them, though, is Dark of the Moon set the record for the largest three-day opening on July 4th weekend, besting Spider-Man 2's $88.1 million by a large margin.

The film now sits at $162.1 million domestically and $372 million worldwide. It is expected to end this long six-and-a-half day run around $181 million. For those wondering how this compares to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, that film ended its first five days with $200 million and $215 million in its first six days. What will be interesting is to see how it holds over next weekend. Personally, I think it's a wildly entertaining film and one I actually hope to catch in IMAX 3D while I can since there is no way the experience of seeing it in the theater can be duplicated at home.

As far as predictions go, Laremy was a little high and hopeful, but a lot of the readers went considerably low, some around $75 million. Ron was the closest of the bunch with a $94.6 million prediction.

I know everyone is going to slam Pixar for making Cars 2 and with it they will point fingers at what is a massive second weekend drop (62%), but I still say it is a perfectly enjoyable film and somehow that's been lost in all the criticism that was generated before the film was ever released. Yes, it is now likely to be the first Pixar release since A Bug's Life in 1998 to not cross the $200 million mark, but that doesn't mean it's a bad film, just disappointing business wise. Am I making excuses? Yes, but only to the extent I felt is needed to combat the negativity... much of it by people I assume never even went to see it.

Yet, with a reported $20 million budget, the film has now grossed almost $60 million. I'm sure the Sony brass is happy with that and I have to wonder, will we get Bad Guidance Counselor in a year or so?

However, I think both films didn't connect for different reasons, Crowne, I think, buried itself all on its own with trailers that just couldn't dupe audiences into theaters. This just isn't a good movie and sometimes a studio can't hide that as much as they wish they could.

As far as predictions go, Laremy undershot it a bit, but commenter Ron was on the money again, this time with a solid $12.9 million prediction.

It managed to do this while losing 93 theaters from last weekend. Not too bad I'd say.

Result: $3.4 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $3.336 million, which is $0.064m off for a 1.88% error.

In other box-office news, Pirates of the Caribben: On Stranger Tides is now the fourth film from Disney (third in the last 18 months) to cross the $1 billion mark globally alongside Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Toy Story 3 and Alice in Wonderland. It is the eighth film ever to accomplish this feat, it crossed the $500 million mark in a record-setting 14 days and is Disney's biggest international release ever. Sounds to me like Captain Jack Sparrow will be sailing again, and soon if the Mouse House has anything to say about it.

Now we can look forward to next weekend... How much will Transformers 3 drop?
No Name Podcast #6: Stupid is as Stupid Does... 'Larry Crowne,' 'Transformers 3' and then Some

It's Friday, which means it's time for our latest podcast, which still has no official name, but at this point I am beginning to not even care. As long as we're consistently making them I'm not sure it really matters, though by next week I guarantee we will have one.

As for this episode's topics of conversation, Laremy and I start with the news that Thor 2 has a screenwriter in place, which then somehow transitions into a conversation of how TV and movies should start working closer together such as the proposed TV series tie in with Ron Howard's potential adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower. That takes us up to the 12:30 mark, which is when we talk about our negative feelings toward Tom Hanks' Larry Crowne (read my review here).

The Larry Crowne conversation lasts up until the 18:40 mark, which is when we begin our discussion on Transformers: Dark of the Moon (read my review here) and director Michael Bay. Now for this conversation you may want to also read what I consider to be one of the best movie-related articles I have ever read, GQ's "Blow-Up: An Oral History of Michael Bay, the Most Explosive Director of All Time". We bring up that piece in the conversation and it is an absolute must read. I have already bought the actual GQ issue just to make sure I always have a physical copy of that piece.

Finally, at the 31:54 mark we talk a little box-office pertaining to Transformers 3 as well as the fact Super 8 just crossed the $100 million mark and any potential it may have for an Oscar nomination, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is about to cross the $1 billion mark worldwide and Bridesmaids just became Judd Apatow's highest grossing film as a producer or director.

This episode runs a tight 42 minutes so it may be one you actually want to download. I am putting together everything to get it added to iTunes, so that should be available very soon. Hope you enjoy this latest episode, and as always, let us know what you think in the comments and if you have any topics you'd like us to discuss next week let us know.

Friday Box Office: 'Hangover 2' Opens Huge as Does Malick's 'Tree of Life' in Limited Release

The Hangover Part II already ranks third among Thursday openers all-time. Only Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith ($50 million) and The Matrix Reloaded ($37.5 million) rank ahead of the $31.6 million the WB comedy pulled down two days ago. That number includes the $10.4 million the film made at midnight that day, which was the biggest of the year by more than double.

The film then continued its winning streak on Friday, dipping only 5%, bringing in an estimated $30 million, giving it over $61 million in just two days. Early predictions said it would make over $100 million for the five-day weekend, predictions then moved to $125 million, then $135 million and now $139 million. The Hangover Part II is certainly trending big, but it won't be big enough to break any Memorial Day weekend records which currently has Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End at the top with $139.8 million for the four-day weekend.

In all likelihood, The Hangover 2 will end up fourth on the Memorial Day weekend list, just ahead of The Lost World: Jurassic Park. And if you're wondering about the best three-day opening for an R-rated film it will be competing with The Matrix Reloaded's $91.7 million of which it has almost bitten off one-third, but is unlikely to catch.

As far as The Hangover 2's three-day prospects, that looks like we're talking around $85 million, which is almost $20 million more than Laremy predicted and will certainly be enough to take the weekend as well as best the record for an R-rated comedy, which is currently held by Sex and the City with $57 million.

In second place on Friday was the 3D animated sequel Kung Fu Panda 2 with $13.1 million and what will likely increase to $45 million as families take to the theaters. If audiences really fall for the Panda it might be able to become the Memorial Day record holder for an animated film, a record currently held by Madagascar at $61 million, but it is going to need some help and there is always that 3D asterisk helping it along the way.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is looking at a $37 million three-day after an estimated $10.8 on Friday, which would signal a 58.9% drop. However, Nikkie Finke at Deadline predicts it will perform some serious magic over the three-day and end at $42 million... and I thought I was being generous with $37m.

Bridesmaids continues to hold on strong with an estimated $4.6 million on Friday and will likely end the weekend with about $15 million for a 39% dip after last week's incredibly strong hold. The Hangover obviously takes a bit of its business, but the film should hit around $83 million by the end of the day on Sunday, and with a reported $32.5 million budget that is great news as you can still tack on international dollars to that number.

Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris added 52 theaters this weekend and has found its way into the top ten after a stellar showing in only six theaters last weekend. The film took in an estimated $476,000 on Friday and will likely take $1.5 million for the three-day giving it a $25,862 per theater average. Not too shabby eh? And with a lot of room to expand.

Lastly, Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life, which won the Palme d'Or last weekend at the Cannes Film Festival, is finally in theaters and it took an estimated $115,000 from only four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, a $28,750 per theater average for one day. It will likely end the three-day weekend around $400,000 for a massive $100,000 per theater average for the weekend giving Fox Searchlight good reason why it opened it where it knew people would line up to see it. You can click here to see when the film will be heading your way.

I have included the Friday top ten directly below and will be back tomorrow morning with a complete wrap up.

The Hangover Part II - $30 million

Kung Fu Panda 2 - $13.1 million

Box-Office Oracle: 'Hangover 2' Over 'Kung Fu Panda 2'? R Rated Over Animated? Yessir!

NOTE: These predictions are for Friday through Sunday and not the long weekend.

You pick against animation at your peril, but the momentum for the new releases this weekend seems to be headed in the opposite direction. Tracking has The Hangover Part II winning, plus Kung Fu Panda 2 might be penalized for 3D. Let's break it down!

Back in 2009 the opening weekends for The Hangover were $44m / $32m. I'm just predicting a much higher frontload now that The Wolfpack has entered the public consciousness. Popular sequels can expect a 20 to 30 percent rise on opening weekend, almost irregardless of the quality. Speaking of, did you catch the 46 percent disparity on the RottenTomatoes score between the original and this one? Yikes.

I'm seeing it in an hour, so I'll reserve judgment, but a terrible Hangover sequel will still bank because people like the characters. And it's the summer, where quality is job #12. So the success of this project will come down to the multiplier. They had to have at least doubled the original's $35m production budget ($80 million according to Wikipedia), so a 10x multiplier is likely off the table, but I'm sure Warner Bros. would be thrilled with even a 5x.

Box-Office Wrap-Up: Global Domination for 'Pirates of the Caribbean' While Woody's 'Midnight' Satisfies in Limited Release

Well, summer is certainly underway now as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opens with the fourth biggest global debut of all-time. It didn't crack the $100 million mark domestically, which is continued proof 3D isn't a draw as much as it is a way to hit consumer pockets harder, but its overseas take was massive.

No surprise here as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides takes the weekend box-office with $90.1 million ($21,685 per theater average), falling shy of the $100 million mark I'm sure Disney was hoping for, but it could have been worse as it held over nicely on Saturday. The film's worldwide total sits at $346.4 million with an estimated $256.3 million from more than 70 markets making this the franchise's best overseas opening. The question is whether or not we're looking at a one weekend and done scenario or if it will continue to perform.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End dropped 61.5% in its second weekend in 2007 after opening with $114.7 million. Will this one follow suit and result in a $34.6 second weekend take? Next weekend it faces off against The Hangover Part II and Kung Fu Panda 2, which tells me that number looks very likely.

As far as predictions go, Laremy didn't some nice work though he undershot it a smidge. On a reader-level new predictor "one for the money, two for the show" (maybe next time use a shorter name?) was almost spot on with a $90 million prediction. Nice work!

In other news, Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris opened in only six theaters, but managed a whopping $578,808 from those six for a $96,468 per theater, and I'll tell you now, if you haven't read my review, this is a good film and one I bet is going to have legs.

Other than that, it's time for you to talk about this weekend as well as next.

What are your thoughts for next weekend as The Hangover Part II and Kung Fu Panda 2 come to town? For reference, The Hangover opened to $44.9 million in 2009 from 3,269 theaters and the original Kung Fu Panda opened to $60.2 million in 2008 from 4,114 theaters. Next weekend Kung Fu Panda 2 will apparently be getting approximately 3,800 theaters and The Hangover Part II will get 3,500+ theaters.

There's a lot to consider next weekend, both are the first sequels in the respective franchises so the expectation would be to outperform the original film. Kung Fu Panda 2 is in 3D, which helps. The Hangover Part II has the current success of Bridesmaids to consider. Then there is Pirates of the Caribbean. Who you taking?

Friday Box-Office: Pirates Hopes for $90 Million While Woody's 'Midnight' Scores in Limited Release

Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was expected to, and obviously will, win the weekend box-office, the big question, at least around these parts, was whether or not it would be able to once again open to over $100 million as did the previous two sequels. After opening with $4.7 million in midnight screenings the film amassed an estimated total of $35 million for Friday, which means it is now seeking approximately $88 million for the weekend, with fingers crossed for $90m. Basically, Laremy's $84.4 million prediction is looking awfully solid at this point.

It will be interesting to see how it holds over Saturday and Sunday as THR reports it's received a B+ CinemaScore from audiences. The challenge will be to beat the current 2011 bar set by Fast Five, which is the current opening weekend record for the year at $86.2 million. On Stranger Tides has already opened to $92.1 million overseas. I am now beginning to wonder, would more people go see it if it wasn't in 3D? I know there are 2D screenings available, but are people perhaps too lazy to even care and see 3D and just bail altogether? Just a thought.

Elsewhere, in its second weekend Bridesmaids managed $6.3 million and will probably end the weekend around $20 million, a mere 23% drop from its opening weekend. Looks like Universal has its second hit in a row.

Paramount's Thor turned in an estimated $4.3 million in its third Friday and should hit around $15 million for the weekend, a 56% drop from last weekend.

In terms of other new releases, Woody Allen's excellent Midnight in Paris opened in only six theaters following its opening day debut in Cannes where it received welcoming reviews (you can read mine here). The film brought in a hefty $170,928 from those six theaters and will likely end the weekend upwards of $600,000. Sony Pictures Classics has to be happy about that per theater average.

The rest of the Friday estimates are listed below and I will be back Sunday morning with a complete box-office wrap up.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - $35 million

Bridesmaids - $6.3 million

Thor - $4.3 million

Fast Five - $3.1 million

Priest - $1.4 million

Something Borrowed - $1.2 million

Rio - $1.1 million

Jumping the Broom - $1 million

Water for Elephants - $660,000

Box-Office Oracle: 'Pirates of the Caribbean' at the Top, but It Won't Hit $100 Million

While we were in Cannes Brad asked me to throw out a number for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. I went with $106m, a number that now looks around 25 percent heavy. Whoops. That's what I get for not factoring in the overall decline of the franchise. Let's break it down!

Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 3 Weeks In A Row

There are two factors that could still push it toward a $100m opening. The first is the 3-D toll. Will you pay extra for it? There are at least two scenes it is used for, so enjoy! The second is the length, theaters should be able to get in at least an additional screening time per day given the 126 minute running time. I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention there is an end credits scene. It's no Fast Five end credits scene, but I feel like you should head in equipped if you're taking the plunge.

With all that in mind, the smart money is still in the $80 - $90m range. The second version made $32k per screen, while At World's End managed only $26k. So if we take another $6k per screen away, and then add in another thousand per screen to cover 3-D and extra times you get $84m. But as the max here is something around $120m and the minimum $72m, I'm definitely more bearish here. I should also note that it's going to crush internationally.

I made a bit of a mistake this afternoon, following a flash rainstorm cleared out I set out to get a few pics to share with you. What I didn't realize was that I was heading down to the Palais des Festival at the exact same time as the red carpet for tonight's black tie screening of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. As I arrived it was an absolute madhouse of people screaming as Hans Zimmer's Pirates score blared in the background. So instead of just go around, I figured I'd bust out the Flip cam and give you a little taste of what madness looks like.

On hand for the red carpet festivities were Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane, Sam Claflin, Astrid Berges-Frisbey, director Rob Marshall and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Now, you can get the tiniest glimpse of the group at the top of the red steps because my camera couldn't zoom in any further, but the reason I took the video at all was to show you the number of people that turn out just to get a glimpse at a celeb.

Check out my short 65-second video of me getting jostled around as people strain to get a glimpse at the Pirates celebs and then after that I've added eleven images from the red carpet in case you wanted to actually see what the people were trying so hard to get a look at.

Cannes Movie Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Photo: Walt Disney Pictures

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is not essential viewing. The plot has a few twists and turns, but the scripts have always been rather imaginative, it's the films that got too big for their own good. In that sense, this fourth installment is more in line with the first film in the franchise in that it isn't as over-the-top when it comes to CG effects and open sea whirlpools. However, it's right in line with the previous two sequels in that it is more about a treasure hunt amidst massive sets and the introduction of characters you aren't given a chance to care one lick about considering you never get to know anything about them outside of the path that led them to becoming part of this particular story.

All of this is to say On Stranger Tides is a tolerable, ho-hum adventure film with very little character chemistry, but enough going on that you're never so bored you want to walk out. Though, speaking of walking, this film has a lot of it. And while we walk, we talk. We talk about where we are going and why we are going there. When we stop, we try and decide which way we are going to walk and then we walk some more. Throw in a few sword fights, a cove of vampire mermaids, a couple of Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) witticisms and you have your movie. Really, all I am saying is On Stranger Tides is the movie you are probably expecting.

As the end of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End alluded to, this time we're on the hunt for the Fountain of Youth and there's a race to be the first to get there. The Spanish have been tipped off to its whereabouts, the British have heard the same rumors and have, for some reason, sought Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) to get it for them and the infamous Blackbeard (the perfectly cast Ian McShane) and his hard-to-figure daughter Angelica (Penelope Cruz) are also joining the hunt and have captured Jack Sparrow to help them.

Of course, there are backstabs, double crosses and ulterior motives for just about everyone involved. Even those whom you think you know why they're searching for the Fountain prove to have a surprise in store. Unfortunately, these surprises aren't "exciting" as much as they are plot twists meant to hide the fact there isn't much to this film outside of the treasure hunt at its core.

Returning screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio do their best to make up for the absence of a love story (nope, no Keira Knightley or Orlando Bloom) by adding a throwaway back-story to Jack and Angelica and then wedge in a romantic aside between a Bible thumper named Philip (Sam Claflin) and a lovely mermaid named Syrena (Astrid Berges-Frisbey). None of this moved me in any way. None of these characters are fleshed out to the point you even care. Philip is a non-entity in the grand scheme of things and the mermaid is just there because she's needed for the ritual that must be performed at the Fountain. To make her a love interest is just an added plot point that's not needed.

As for Angelica, I mean absolutely no offense to Penelope Cruz, but nearly every time she's cast in an English speaking role everything that's great about her work in all of Pedro Almodovar's films and Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona goes away. She turns into just another pretty face. Cruz is a massive talent in her native language, but when it comes to English she's wooden and still searching for inflection.

Then there's Depp as Jack Sparrow, a role I feel he can roll out of bed, apply massive amounts of black mascara and perform without a second thought at this point. I say this because that's pretty much how it seems here, but none of this is Depp's fault. The screenplay does him no favors advancing the mystique of Jack Sparrow. When he's not reciting standard lines to forward the narrative, he's uttering tired one-liners that only serve to remind you how interesting and fun he was when you first met him in 2003.

This all sounds quite negative when in fact On Stranger Tides isn't entirely lost at sea. It's a franchise that seems to have simply found a steady course and even a change in director can't faze the franchise as Rob Marshall (Chicago, Nine) brings nothing in the way of a personal stamp that would make you think this wasn't just a dialed-back and bored Gore Verbinski effort. Outside of what sounded like a few key changes from Hans Zimmer's score, this film fits right in with the rest of them. If this were a primetime TV show this would simply be episode four, though the first film remains the only one worth playing during Sweeps Week.

Yet, since this is a feature film and not a TV show we rightly hold it to a higher standard, which is where it begins to grow tiresome with feelings of "been there, done that." Sparrow hadn't even sought the Fountain of Youth in previous installments, but somehow it seems as if he had already found it and we are now watching a repeat.

When it comes down to it all, you're either going to see this film or you're not. At this point I don't think there is any convincing you one way or another. Whether you're a Pirates fan or not, this film will not change your mind. But if you're looking for an installment to dial things back a bit from the overweight monster the franchise had become, this is it. Perhaps had the two previous sequels not been made this one would play a little better, but it is now quite clear the screenwriters have run out of ideas to make Sparrow any more interesting and his adventures are now just as ho-hum.

Touring the Croisette: 'Cowboys and Aliens,' 'Transformers 3,' 'Pirates,' 'Tintin' and More Market Their Goods

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

Al trip to the Cannes Film Festival wouldn't be complete without offering you a look around the sights, and I will begin this year's tour with a look at the marketing to be found along the Croisette.

First let me point out the picture above, which is the new facade to the Palais des Festivals of which I will be getting a panoramic shot of like I did last year. Now let's get to the posters and banners around the Croisette.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

The Carlton hotel is always decked out and where there was marketing for The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader last year, there is now a large promotion for Cowboys and Aliens, which arrives July 29 and stars Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Harrison Ford and Sam Rockwell.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

Here's a look at the rest of the promotion.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

On the left is the sales banner for Alexandre Aja's Cobra: The Space Pirate based on the manga of the same name. I didn't look close enough to see what Land of the Beast is, but it's in 3D and features a big grizzly bear, not sure if it's a documentary or some kind of horror, but my guess is the latter. I'll try and take some time and get a closer look later this week.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

Rotating poster pillars can be seen all over Cannes and this one featured a look at Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Priest and The Tree of Life.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

I know all of you can't wait for the next Kevin James talks to animals movie.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

Not a movie poster, but that's Charlize Theron and she's worth a snap.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

Yet another Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides poster.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

Oh hey, look, one more...

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

Apparently this is an animated Korean feature and you can watch the trailer right here.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

This banner for Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn is basically right across the street from the Palais.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

Yes, Pirates of the Caribbean is everywhere around here.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

As you can see, the display for Cars 2 wasn't fully unveiled when I walked by...

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

...but along with a lifesize Mater, there will also be a lifesize Lightning McQueen. I'll get snaps of those later.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

The banner for The Smurfs is atop the Carlton Hotel.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

That's John Malkovich and Patrick Dempsey in the animated Transformers: Dark of the Moon advertisement covering the entrance to the Carlton.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

And here's another look at that.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

Yup, that's a massive pair of boots for DreamWorks' Puss in Boots, of which I'll be seeing some footage in just about 12 hours from now.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

Renny Harlin (Deep Blue Sea ) apparently directed 5 Days of August starring Rupert Friend, Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Dean Cain, Emmanuelle Chiriqui and Heather Graham. And yet, it played at the American Film Market last year and wasn't picked up.

IMDb has a plot synopsis that says it is a drama centered around the war between Russia and Georgia, and focused on an American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native who become caught in the crossfire. They also say it is opening in Georgia this June. I wonder if anyone will pick it up for stateside delivery.

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

So the geniuses behind Date Movie, Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans and Vampires Suck are preparing to spoof Avatar with The Biggest Movie of All Time 3D. You buying a ticket?

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com // Brad Brevet

Final pick was snapped in front of the Carlton as well promoting J.J. Abrams' Super 8.

2011 Cannes Preview: My Anticipated Schedule for the Next 12 Days

Photo: RopeofSilicon.com / Brad Brevet

I have rewritten this intro about three times, hoping to publish this before I left Seattle for Cannes. Then when I landed in New York. Then from the plane as I flew into Nice. Obviously none of those options worked for one reason or another so now that I have arrived in Cannes (yes, that's the view from my apartment balcony above), here it is...

My coverage of the 2011 Cannes Film Festival begins now and just like I did last year before I went to the Toronto Film Festival, I thought I would share my anticipated schedule for the next several days, as coverage won't be the same as it normally is on a day-to-day basis around here, which I'm sure you already figured out since yesterday was the first Monday in forever that I haven't provided any content. But let's cut the babble and get to the good stuff.

First off, since I will be in movies a lot throughout the next several days, I hope to provide updates via Twitter (should my iPad finally connect to the cellular service over here) as I head in and out of the theater, giving you an update on what I what I'm about to see and quick reactions to what I have just seen. So, if you are not yet following me on Twitter, you can do so right here. If all works out as planned the updates should also appear here on the site.

That said, here's a look at my schedule for the next ten days. Like Toronto, this is what I expect it will be, but as you'll see the are still a few tentative titles on the schedule. Last year I think I saw something like 26 films, but I only ended up reviewing 18 of them. This year, I don't plan seeing as many so I can keep my wits about me as falling asleep in the middle of a movie last year was always a possibility.

I will be reviewing all of the films you see below as soon as I possibly can, but sometimes that can take up to twelve hours.

Tuesday

May 10th

The festival begins tomorrow, but tonight I will be seeing Kung Fu Panda 2. The goal now is to get my press badge and some rest before the 8 PM screening.

8 PM - Kung Fu Panda 2

Wednesday

Wednesday the festival officially begins with Woody Allen's latest film, which it looks like I'll have time to review immediately afterward before heading off to see the potentially controversial Sleeping Beauty starring Emily Browning (Sucker Punch).

Friday is a real toss up and may be a day I take it lightly. We Have a Pope looks like Italy's answer to The King's Speech, Michel Petrucciani is a documentary centered on the great jazz pianist directed by Michael Radford (The Concert) an Miss Bala is an Un Certain Regard selection centering on a young aspiring beauty queen who finds her dream turned against her when she unwillingly gets involved with a criminal group at war.

Kicking things off with a little Pirates action followed by a film called Return, a film that may feature Linda Cardellini ("ER") in a role that may help her shed her TV and Scooby-Doo persona. Return co-stars Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) and John Slattery ("Mad Men"). Finally, The Boy with a Bike seems to be a film everyone is interested in seeing, and I'm sure that has a lot to do with the fact it stars Cecile De France and Jeremie Renier. That's enough to get me interested.

Then I move to film centering on a guy plagued by a series of apocalyptic visions. Then comes a Sundance standout thriller.

So there you have it. I don't think I will catch all of the films above, but if all goes well I should end up seeing 18-19 films at Cannes is year and will have reviews of them all for you. Hopefully I will find a few not on the list to explore as buzz circulates the festival and hopefully you'll stick with me for the duration.

On top of reviews, I will also be bringing periodic videos, pictures and more from around the south of France. So stay tuned and hopefully you'll like what I have to offer.

For all of my Cannes overage you can always find it on the homepage, or right here on the designated Cannes hub. Here are also a few links from last year to give you an idea of what kind of coverage to expect beyond movie reviews.

I am expecting the press schedule to release tomorrow, which is when I will finally be able to put together my plan of attack, but you can rest assured I will make sure Captain Jack will be part of my plans.

That said, today Disney unveiled the first clip from the film titled "Palace Escape". You can check it out directly below.

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides captures the fun, adventure and humor that ignited the hit franchise--this time in Disney Digital 3D. Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed adventure. Crossing paths with the enigmatic Angelica (Penelope Cruz), he's not sure if it's love--or if she's a ruthless con artist who's using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn't know whom to fear more: Blackbeard or Angelica, with whom he shares a mysterious past. The international cast includes franchise vets Geoffrey Rush as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa and Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack's longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs, plus Sam Claflin as a stalwart missionary and Astrid Berges-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid.

The Trashy Romance Novel Poster for 'Pirates of the Caribbean 4'

Fabio must not have been available for the photo shoot for the new poster promoting Walt Disney Pictures' Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Based on what I'm seeing the film's title doesn't seem trashy enough. Maybe something like Pirates of the Caribbean: Finding Passion and a Mermaid Love Child would be a little better as Sam Clafin as Philip Swift looks off into the distance as Astrid Bergs-Frisbey plays the mermaid Syrena and clutches at his chest.

If this was the poster for the XXX-rated version it would make sense, but I just don't get it otherwise.

2011 Cannes Film Festival Lineup Announced

This morning the Cannes Film Festival announced the line-up for the 64th edition of the fest, which will run from May 11-22. Before getting to the films, managing director of the festival, Thierry Frmaux, announced that 1715 films were submitted for consideration, representing 33 countries. Of those films 19 were included in competition, and of those 19, four were directed by female directors, a record for the fest.

As for the films included in the festival, the competition looks fierce. Just a few names you might recognize among the competition crowd include Terrence Malick, Pedro Almodovar, Takashi Miike, Nicolas Winding Refn, Lars Von Trier and Lynne Ramsay. Beyond that many of the names are new to me, but that's the number one reason I go to Cannes, the international flavor of this festival surpasses any of the major fests you'll find in North America.

The Out of Competition selections for the time being are a little dry as we already knew Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides would be at the fest and the other recognizable inclusion is Jodie Foster's The Beaver, which I have already seen and will in fact be interviewing Foster next week... I guess this means we'll have one more thing to talk about.

The Un Certain Regard selection is also filled with names primarily unknown to me though I do recognize the inclusion of the Sundance hit Martha Marcy May Marlene from Sean Durkin.

So who does this mean may be in attendance as far as stars go? Try Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas, Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kirsten Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Alexander Skarsgard, Stellan Skarsgrd, Udo Kier, John Hurt, Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, Oscar Isaac, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman, Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, Michael Sheen, Tom Hiddleston, Kurt Fuller, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Adrien Brody, Alison Pill, La Seydoux, Ccile de France, Jrmie Renier, Mia Wasikowska and ... maybe... Mel Gibson on the Croistette? Kung Fu Panda 2 is also set to junket during the festival, which means that while it won't be playing in the fest, Angelina Jolie is likely to be in town on the arm of Mr. Pitt.

For now, I am tired and need to get some sleep. It is 3 AM and I will look over the list in the morning as I begin searching for the hidden gems I wasn't previously aware of. Share your input on the list so far and I look forward to discussing it further once I am refreshed.

The Palais des Festivals during the 63rd Cannes Film Festival
Photo: Brad Brevet

This Thursday, April 14, the Cannes Film Festival will be announcing the line-up for the 64th edition of their festival and in the past two days speculation has continued as to what the films will be. The only title 100% confirmed is Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris which will serve as the fest's opening night film. Beyond that nothing is known for sure although Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life seems like a lock at this point.

Variety's Justin Chang posted an article on Sunday giving a list of previously rumored films he says have emerged as strong prospects, which include Pedro Almodovar's The Skin I Live In, Dogtooth director Yorgos Lanthimos's Alps, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne's The Kid With a Bike, Lars von Trier's Melancholia, Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, Aki Kaurismaki's Le Havre, Nanni Moretti's We Have a Pope and Paolo Sorrentino's This Must Be the Place.

Additionally, Chang speculates the Un Certain Regard section and includes likely contenders Lynne Ramsay's We Need to Talk About Kevin and Gus Van Sant's Restless.

Beyond that it seems wide open though today notable French newspaper Le Figaro is reporting what I've long speculated, that Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will play the fest on Saturday, May 14. This makes complete sense considering it gets the likes of Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz on the red carpet and serves as early buzz leading up to its French release on May 18 and its stateside debut on May 20. The question now is what other big studio feature will find its way to the Croisette?

Last year Robin Hood opened the festival and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps played out of competition while Summit's Fair Game played in competition. I've heard rumors of Kung Fu Panda 2 to X-Men: First Class, the latter of which seems entirely unlikely and even more so now that the blockbuster slot appears to have been filled by Pirates.

Either way, we'll know soon enough just what films I'll be looking to review come May 11-20 (I'm leaving two days before the close) on Thursday. You can stay up-to-date with all of my Cannes coverage on the Cannes homepage here on RopeofSilicon and come Thursday the homepage will have a new tab dedicated solely for the festival.
Final 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' Poster

Disney has taken the four character posters we've seen before (although the Penelope Cruz pose is a bit different) and now merged them together into a final super poster giving us Geoffrey Rush, Penelope Cruz, Johnny Depp and Iam McShane together in the final poster promoting Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

This, as you'll notice, is the international version as it carries the UK's May 18 release date instead of May 20, which is when it will be released domestically, but I think it satisfies all interested parties. You can check out the poster below or get a larger look at it as well as 36 other images/posters from the film right here.

Geoffrey Rush Lends Voice to 'Green Lantern,' Travolta for Gotti and 'World War Z' Update

Deadline's Mike Fleming reports that even though Geoffrey Rush isn't on the cast list, he'll be contributing voice work for the character of Tomar-Re (pictured), the scientist who works alongside the title character in Green Lantern. Fleming also hears Michael Clarke Duncan is a contender for the voice of the character Kilowog, but a final decision hasn't yet been made. I didn't realize the film would have so many CGI characters, but this does little to restore my faith after that dismal first trailer.

According to THR, John Travolta has signed on to play mobster John Gotti Sr. in Gotti: Three Generations. The film will focus on the relationship between John Gotti Sr. and John Gotti Jr., who took over the family business for his father. The younger Gotti served time in prison before successfully escaping conviction in four subsequent racketeering trials. Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook, Alpha Dog) will direct.

With a May 20 release date on the horizon for the 4th installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, USA Today reports Jerry Bruckheimer already has a screenplay for a fifth film in the works. Bruckheimer also says On Stranger Tides and future Pirates flicks will be standalone stories. Is it just me, or is interest in the Pirates franchise waning? On Stranger Tides seems like it's getting lost in the shuffle of all these summer releases. And after Prince of Persia and The Sorcerer's Apprentice, I don't think the Bruckheimer name holds as much weight as it used to. I'm sure it'll do well internationally, but let's not get ahead of ourselves, Jerry.

Deadline reports Ridley Scott wants to direct a biopic about Gertrude Bell, a female Lawrence of Arabia of sorts who became an important figure in Middle East politics prior to WWI, working as an archaeologist, diplomat, photographer and spy. Scott has hired Oscar nominee Jeffrey Caine (The Constant Gardener) to write the script, and if this project continues to develop it will likely become the most coveted female role we've seen in a long time. Scott is also developing and plans to direct Gucci, which focuses on the volatile relationship between fashion mogul Maurizio Gucci and his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani, who plotted his 1995 murder. Which would you rather see after Prometheus?

Craig Robinson ("The Office," Hot Tub Time Machine) will executive produce and star as the Anti-Christ in the Lionsgate comedy Rapturepalooza. Deadline reports the story focuses on a couple trying to reestablish their sandwich cart business a year after a religious apocalypse cuts the world's population in half. But business becomes the least of their problems for the sandwich sellers when the Anti-Christ (Robinson) claims the woman as his bride. Sounds original at least, but these movies tend not to do so well (see: Little Nicky, Bedazzled).

James Marsden (X-Men), Michael C. Hall ("Dexter") and Melissa Leo (The Fighter) are attached to star in The Dead Circuis, a drama that builds a fictitious storyline around the mysterious death of "I Fought The Law" singer Bobby Fuller. Fuller's song became a hit in 1966 when he was just 23, but he his battered body was found a week after with gasoline poured down his throat. Still, his death was ruled a suicide. James Marsden will play Charles Manson, while Melissa Leo will play a Manson Family matriarch who reveals to a grieving screenwriter that the secret behind Fuller's murder might be found in 16mm snuff films buried in Death Valley. Hall will play Fuller's corrupt, wheelchair-bound manager. First-time director Adam Davenport co-wrote the script with John Kaye, based on Kaye's novel. Please, tell me I'm not the only one who thinks this sounds amazing.

Heat Vision reports Stuart Beattie, whose writing credits include Collateral and 30 Days of Night, will write and direct I, Frankenstein. The graphic novel adaptation takes place in a modern-day world where Frankenstein stands between humans and a host of other supernatural creatures looking to rise up and take over. The graphic novel was created by Kevin Grevioux, the man responsible for the Underworld series.

True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld is attached to Sleeping Beauty, the latest revisionist take on a fairy tale put into motion. It follows the likes of Alice in Wonderland, Red Riding Hood, Snow White and the Huntsman, The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and that Channing Tatum Peter Pan movie. A spec package has been sent out to buyers, though I'm sure I'm not the only one anxiously awaiting the end of this fad.

World War Z, the Brad Pitt/Marc Forster zombie movie that was once considered dead on the basis of its $125 million budget looks to be rising again. Deadline reports a number of financiers are looking to split the load and get the film into production as soon as June. Pitt is still attached to star and Forster (Quantum of Solace, Monster's Ball) to direct. $125 million seems like a hell of a lot for a zombie movie, but we've never seen a zombie movie with a star on the level of Brad Pitt. Still, I think a PG-13 rating is inevitable with that type of a budget.

Kudos to them for getting lap dog bloggers to post something new about each of their films every single day, but don't think for a second it isn't painfully obvious... Yes, it is painful.

That said, here I am, Monsieur Lap Dog Blogger, offering up the latest Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides poster, this time featuring Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa. Is it just me or is there something creepy about each one of these posters? The poses seem so odd and unnatural.

Oh, but a boy can dream can't he and dream he will. Dream a little dream.

I have also added a new featurette from the film titled "On Stranger Tides Revealed" which you can watch directly above.

Care to Guess What Film Will Open the 2011 Cannes Film Festival? Announcement Tomorrow...

Only a few hours ago I turned in my application for the 64th Cannes Film Festival and now Cdric Succivalli of ICS Film lets us know tomorrow will see the announcement of the opening night film.

Last year Ridley Scott's Robin Hood opened the fest with a bit of a thud and here's a list of the films that opened the fest in recent years:

2010 - Robin Hood (dir. Ridley Scott)

2009 - Up (dir. Pete Docter and Bob Peterson)

2008 - Blindness (dir. Fernando Meirelles)

2007 - My Blueberry Nights (dir. Wong Kar-wai)

2006 - The Da Vinci Code (dir. Ron Howard)

2005 - Lemming (dir. Dominik Moll)

2004 - Bad Education (dir. Pedro Almodovar)

2003 - Fanfan la Tulipe (dir. Grard Krawczyk)

2002 - Hollywood Ending (dir. Woody Allen)

2001 - Moulin Rouge (dir. Baz Luhrmann)

So what will this year's opening film be?

I'm sure your instant reaction would be to say Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life, but Cedric shoots that out of the water immediately when he first alluded to the news in a Twitter post saying, "Expect a BIG Cannes announcement tomorrow... And this one will have nothing to do with Malick."

Aurelien from Cinema Teaser and I batted a couple names back and forth recently, mine being Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Not only does it open nine days later, but it would also give reason for the red carpet to feature both Johnny Depp and Penlope Cruz. Aurelien mentioned rumors of Jean-Jacques Annaud's Black Gold and Luc Besson's The Lady, but as he said to me, those are just rumors.

Any of you out there care to take a guess? If not, we'll know soon enough.

Ian McShane as Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Walt Disney Pictures just sent over three new images from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and among them was the new image of Ian McShane as Blackbeard as seen above. McShane is probably the only part of this new film I am actually looking forward to as the rest of it seems like just a repeat of what's come before and Penelope Cruz's involvement doesn't really interest me in the least. Put Cruz in a Pedro Almodovar film and you'll have me front and center, but in this Hollywood blockbusters she just doesn't quite fit.

You can check out a larger version of the above pic, plus the two other new images in the gallery featuring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow and Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa right here.

'Transformers,' 'Captain America' and 'Thor' Trailers and More Expected During Super Bowl

The Hollywood Reporter brings word on the films expected to debut new trailers during this year's Super Bowl and they are made up primarily of the usual suspects, tentpole features aimed at the masses.

Included are Paramount's Super 8 directed by JJ Abrams, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. Disney will release a new trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Universal has a spot lined up for Jon Favreau's Cowboys and Aliens. Finally, Relativity will issue a trailer for the Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro feature Limitless.

While those are the trailers that will be seen during the game, others will be seen during pregame including Columbia's Just Go With It, Battle: Los Angeles and Priest, plus a spot for The Eagle from Focus Features. Paramount, however isn't stopping at just game time domination as they will have promos for their animated features Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2 front and center.

Apparently Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox have not lined up any promotion, which seems a bit odd to me considering it's a perfect way for Fox to use the fact the game is on their network and issue a trailer for X-Men: First Class. Additionally, for Warner Bros. to pass up an opportunity to debut trailer for The Hangover: Part II, Green Lantern and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is a bit of a surprise. Not to mention the March 25 release of Sucker Punch. Oh wait, guys watching football wouldn't be interested in scantily clad women shooting machine guns. Nevermind.

I'm also wondering why Universal isn't using the time for a trailer for Fast Five, a movie that I would suspect would do gangbusters with a football audience.

Of course, there is always a question of the money as the Hollywood Reporter article quotes rates for the February 6 big game on Fox are running about $3 million per 30-second spot. That ain't chump change. It also goes to show that when we're talking about a film's budget just how much we aren't considering when we don't get solid numbers on how much was spent on marketing.

Any of the titles above piquing your interest?
